Sailing in Croatia is one of the best experiences – but knowing what to pack can make your trip 100x better! Packing for a week on a yacht is very different to packing for any other holiday.

Leave the suitcase at home and bring a duffel bag instead because who really wants to fall over a suitcase in the middle of the yacht at 5 in the morning?

Now here’s what you need to pack inside your duffel bag:

But if you’re doing a huge Europe trip, I’ll let you in on a little secret. When you  get to Croatia , empty your carry-on bag into your suitcase and transfer your essentials for Sail Week into the carry-on bag. Everything you need to enjoy the week will fit in your carry-on bag, trust me!

But what do you do with your luggage once you’ve transferred everything over to the smaller bag?

Sail Week have secure luggage areas where you can leave your suitcase for the week, so you don’t need to worry about it while you’re swimming in the crystal-clear ocean and soaking up the sun.

• Comfortable clothes to explore the island in
• Casual summer clothes for the night
• 4 x swimsuits – you’ll be living in them so make sure you bring a few of these!
• 1 pair of flip-flops for when you’re on the island or at parties – you won’t be wearing shoes for most of the trip.
• 1 pair of sneakers for exploring the island, going hiking and riding scooters over the island + a pair of socks.
• 2 pairs of pyjamas

• Toothbrush and hairbrush
• Shampoo, conditioner and body wash but make sure these are travel size
• Girls, only bring the makeup that you NEED because you’ll only be wearing it at night!
• Don’t forget your makeup remover!
• Sunscreen!!! This is the most important one, we went through 3 bottles of sunscreen on our yacht and it still wasn’t enough!
• Wet wipes – these are for when you get back at 5 am from partying and need to wipe off the dirt and sweat before jumping into bed.

• An  inflatable   The raft party isn’t as fun if you don’t have an inflatable to use! You can buy them at the port and on every island, so don’t worry if you forget to bring one from home.
• Your country flag. If you don’t have one, don’t worry. SailWeek will put one on your yacht.
• Sunglasses or two! Somehow everyone kept losing their sunglasses!
• A beach towel.
• A car charger for your phone.
• A deck of cards because who doesn’t love a good drinking game before going out!
• Snacks to cure your hunger after a night out.
• Alcohol. SailWeek allows you to bring your own alcohol aboard.  No need to stack for a week at your departure Marina. You can get some easily at the local shops on each island.

What to leave at home:

• Portable speaker – the yachts come with speakers so that’s one less thing you need to pack.
• Dressy clothes – guys, leave the button-up collared shirts at home!

Don’t pack too much because you’ll be living in your swimming costume and it’s totally acceptable because everyone else will be doing the exact same thing!

What to Pack on a Yacht for a Week – Smart Packing List

Sailing trips are, without a doubt, a unique and exciting way to spend your vacation. It has a mix of adventure, glamor, and luxury that appeals to one and all.

On the other hand, sailing trips are also very unlike land holidays in many important ways. For one, you would not have the luxury of heading to the nearest convenience store to buy the things you need.

In other words, it is essential that you plan and prepare well in advance to avoid any chance of last-minute regrets.

I have been witness to many sorry tales where inadequate planning and preparation completely marred what was supposed to be a vacation of a lifetime.

In this article, therefore, I have decided to discuss what to pack on a yacht for a week .

Essentials for a Week Long Sailing Trip

There are certain items that people always need to bring with them, regardless of gender and age, especially so when you are sailing away on the vast ocean.

Firstly, you should draw up a list of toiletries you typically use every day and include them in your list.

If you or any member of your friends and family take prescription medication, then that is something that must be included.

Over and above, you should pack over the counter medications for common afflictions. Here is what your list should look like.

1) For women: Shampoo and conditioner, body wash or soap, water resistant makeup, baby wipes, lip balm, moisturizer, sun block, toothbrush and toothpaste, deodorant, hair brush and ties.

2) For men: Shampoo and conditioner, body wash, sunscreen, moisturizer, toothbrush and paste, sunscreen, lip balm, and a long lasting deodorant.

3) Medications: Prescription medications if any, over the counter medicines for migraines, motion sickness, common cold, diarrhea, sleeping pills, birth control, and mosquito repellent.

4) Other essentials: These would include items such as washing powder, razor, ear plugs and eye mask, towels , Swiss knife, a phrase book and travel

Documents to Pack

Arriving on your sailing holiday without proper documentations can wreck your vacations in more ways than one.

Be extra careful that you have all the necessary documents for a smooth sail. Here is the checklist.

1) Passports for everyone with proper and valid visa attached

2) Travel insurance documents for each sailing party

3) Sufficient money in local currency

4) All the documentation related to charter including the contract

5) Sailing license or certificate in the case you would be skippering the boat yourself

Packing for Men

One of the joys of sailing trips is that you do not need to pack heavy.

The atmosphere aboard is always casual and you would mostly spend your time in t-shirts and shorts.

Here is what you would need to pack for a week long sailing trip.

1) 5-6 pairs of t-shirt, one pair of collar shirt, a pair of khaki or jeans, and 2-3 pair of regular shorts

2) 2-3 pairs of bathing shorts or speedos

3) One pair of warm sweater and a lightweight jacket made of synthetic material for windy or rainy days

4) 2 pair of pajamas, 3-4 pair of underwears, 2 pairs of socks

5) Among other accessories, include a couple of towels , a wide brimmed hat or a baseball cap, a pair of quality polarized sunglasses , flip flops with good grip, and casual or boat shoes .

Packing for Women

The advice for men holds equally well for women.

Pack light because you would mostly be spending your time in a bathing suit.

Packing light is also convenient because space is always scarce aboard a boat.

Here is my checklist for women who are planning a week long sail.

1) 3-4 pairs of swimsuits, 3-4 pairs of bras and underwear, 2 sarongs if you want to cover-up

2) 3-4 light dresses, 3-4 tank tops, and shorts

3) A sweater or a shawl for chilly weather, a light jacket for wet weather and windy days, a pair of leggings

4) A pair of good grip sandals and boat shoes each

5) Other accessories include 2 pairs of towels , a pair of good quality polarized sunglasses , wide brim hat, and 2 pairs of socks.

Packing for Children

Sailing with kids means you have to prepare a little better as they have certain special requirements.

For example, they are more prone to soiling the clothes, so if you do not wish to spend extra time doing the laundry, pack extra clothes.

Here is my recommended list for kids.

1) T-shirts or shirts for each day of sail. Same with shorts.

2) 3-4 pairs of bathing suits

3) Light jacket for wind and rain, and a warm sweater or a jacket for chilly weather

4) 3-4 pairs of pajamas, socks, and under wears each

5) Accessories such as anti-slip flip-flop, shoes, hat or a cap, and sunglasses

6) Special food preparations if your kids require them

What Not to Bring on a Sailing Trip

As I mentioned above, sailing trips are unique because of a variety of reasons such as limited space, casual nature, limited energy resources, limited water supply etc.

Therefore, certain things that you might consider for a land-based holiday, are a strict no-no on a yacht. For example, the following items.

1) Expensive jewelry: There is no need for jewelry unless your boat has a special provision for formal events.

2) Other valuable items: Life aboard a sailing boat is fairly rudimentary and simple, and you can spend a week without carrying your possessions that are valuable in terms of money or sentiments.

3) Formal dresses: You would not need tweed jackets, formal shoes or an elegant evening wear aboard a sailing boat.

4) Electronic gadgets: While you should certainly carry a camera or a tablet, I would recommend that you leave gadgets such as hair straighteners etc that suck precious battery on board the yacht of their juice.

Provisioning List for Your Trip

Provisioning your boat is important so that you can enjoy tasty meals during long passages.

Remember that provisioning does not refer to merely the food items but the entire gamut of items you would require during the sail including safety gears, first aid, essential electronic items such as VHF sets, tools, and other miscellaneous items.

However, since most of these would be recommended by your charter company, we would stick to the food items in this article.

1) Fresh foods: These include vegetables, dairy, and meats, packed in special packages to last as many days as possible.

2) Frozen foods: These items would be what you would be left with during the latter part of your sail. Ensure that you choose items after consulting everyone on the trip. Variety is the key.

3) Other nonperishable items: These include pasta, condiments, sauces, spices, herb mixes, coffee, sugar, canned foods, preserves, cereals.

4) Alcohol: Sailing is essentially one long party so you would require enough liquor to go around. Choose hard liquor over beers because they do not take up lots of space.

5) Snacks: High energy snacks are great between meals, and keep the spirits high.

6) Special foods: If any of the sailing parties has special food requirements, such as gluten-free diet, or kids with their own special requirements, then the same should be taken care of.

General Tips

1) Choose soft waterproof Duffel bags to pack your stuff as they take up less space, and do not present the risk of scuffing up boat surface.

2) Bring a quality set of dry bag to keep certain essential items including your electronics and documents.

3) When it comes to food, always consume the perishable items first.

4) Store your vegetables carefully. For example, ripe bananas would accelerate the ripening of other fruits and vegetable nearby.

In Conclusion

The lists I have presented above may seem overwhelming at first, but they really aren’t. To repeat myself, life on a sailboat is simple and basic, and you need little beyond the basics.

With a little bit of careful planning, you can ensure an exciting glitch free sailing trip of a lifetime. The aim should be to pack light and pack smart.

I can honestly say I’ve never been on a yacht before, but this makes it sound so much fun! I would’ve thought that I can just pack like I’m going on a road trip if I’m staying on a yacht for a week. But I see there are things that I never thought I would need! Thanks for the post!

A land trip is different than an offshore trip. In a hotel, you can bring suitcases as much as you want but on a boat, you are restricted because of the weight and lack of storage.

What a great article! This is perfect to have on hand when planning a boat trip! You usually pack unnecessary things and end up filling space you need for most important stuff. You have covered everything, for the entire family! You could maybe create a printable checklist so others can use it when packing.

Yes, this is the problem of most people when packing , I did the same mistake over and over and it is not easy to get rid of this habit. But after years of traveling and packing, I finally understood my mistake:)

Sailing Trip Essentials: What To Pack Sailing

A sailing holiday is one of the most relaxing vacation types, with no checking in and out of hotels and no need to pack your bags every few days as you move from location to location.

However, because you are aboard a yacht (or boat), you need to ensure that you have everything you need from the beginning of the journey, as purchasing items while sailing can be expensive and difficult.

Don’t worry, though!  We’ve sailed a few times (even with kids!) and have the ultimate packing list for your week-long sailing vacation right here, whether around the Dalmatian Islands or in the Kvarner Region .

Besides the obvious suggestions like your passport and visa (if required), tickets, bank ATM cards, credit cards, phone, charger, and music, two items are by far the most important, in my opinion.

Sailing Packing List: Two Key Essentials

Oh, and sailors believe it’s bad luck to bring a hard suitcase onboard – or, at least, that is what I have been told!

Sailing packing list: what else you need.

• Women. Two dresses, two pairs of shorts, and three T-shirts/tank tops.
• Men. Five T-shirts/tank tops, three pairs of shorts.
• A pashmina or throw is also very handy if things get chilly.
• In case of bad weather. If it gets crisp at night, or you encounter (gasp!) rain. Be sure to have a pair of leggings/tracksuit pants as a backup. If a pair of socks and a light jumper can fit into your bag, throw them in.
• Underwear. Bras and underwear. One for each day. No one wants to wash and hang these up for the world to see .
• Women. Please bring at least two, but I usually end up packing four… okay, five.
• Men. Boardshorts or speedos, you decide.
• Shoes. Let’s face it; you will be barefoot most of the time (or in your rubber-soled shoes). Nevertheless, you will also need a pair of flip-flops and/or sandals to wear while out at a restaurant. If you plan to bike or hike, a pair of tennis shoes is also handy. The husband and I combine two pairs and add to our sailing packing list a pair of unisex Superga shoes perfect for walking and soft-soled for wearing on the yacht.

• The usual water toys. But what about an underwater camera? This one is just $20! Of course, you’ll still need your everyday beach-side vacation essentials like a blow-up lounge chair, snorkeling  gear , and camera,…
• Towels. Microfiber towels are the best choice because they dry very fast. Often, the yacht rental company provides one. If they do not, pack two, so you have one to use while drying or rolling  up and using it as a pillow on the deck .
• Camera. There are so many photo ops while sailing you may even need two. Don’t forget your batteries and or charger. It also can’t hurt to add a spare memory card to your sailing holiday packing list.
• Women. A hairbrush , elastics, a headband, a razor, and tampons if you think you’ll need them (let’s hope not).
• Men. Nothing extra, aren’t you lucky!

Brands We Use And Trust

If you have any room left, some other items you may want to add to your packing list are….

• Earplugs. Things can get noisy if you are docked at a busy marina overnight.
• Denim jacket. While you can bring a cardigan or wrap, throw on a Levi’s Women’s Authentic Trucker Jacket to add a slight edge to your look. This jacket works great with a tank dress or over casual shorts.
• Eyemask. It may be  overkill, but some of you may need it, especially for a daytime siesta.
• Waterproof bag to protect your phone and other valuables . You can get ones like this or use zip-lock  bags , which are a little cheaper.
• Clothes pegs . Things need to dry on deck, and when you pick up speed or the winds are a-blowing, you need pegs to tie your gear down. You don’t want your towels and swimmers flying off into the Adriatic , do you?
• Lip balm. Wind-chapped lips are a real drag.

Things You Should Leave Off Your Sailing Packing List

• Hair Straightener . Girlfriend, with the salt in your hair , let it all be all-natural!
• Expensive watches and jewelry. Once it falls overboard, it’s gone forever.
• High heels. There isn’t any need. Period.

A book SJ, when you go sailing, you must at least take one book with you. I did lots of sailing, Dutch waters, Dutch, Belgian, French and English coast, and always there were moments you want to have a bit of rest, isolated from the rest. Trust me, a bóóóók !!!’ Ahoy, Pim.

What a great list. I would have never thought to bring earplugs. One of the malls that I liked to hang out at in Malaysia had a marina as part of it, and there was always loud music blasting from all the surrounding bars and restaurants at night. I’d look out at the yachts while I sipped my Starbucks and dreamed of a sailing vacation. Unfortunately, I get horribly, horribly seasick unless it’s the calmest of waters. While I might be willing to put up with it, the constant threat of being vomited upon by me seems to freak out the rest of my family.

Oh yes, I have been one of those non-sleeping people thanks to the loud music. It’s all fun until YOU wanna sleep. That’s a big sucky-poo-poo for being so so sick, so, not even tablets help you?

Sailing Essentials

Important items to bring on your boat.

Packing for a boating trip is not unlike packing for an airplane ride. It begins with creating a list, packing your bags, and then anxiously hoping you haven’t forgotten anything!

If you’re new to boating , use our list below as a starting point, noting that the items you’ll wish to bring will vary based on the length of your trip and the current and forecasted weather conditions.

Here’s a list of items that you absolutely need to have with you every time you’re out on a boat.

Passport & Boating Documents

Make sure your insurance papers, boating license, and registration are all on board, as well as some form of photo ID, particularly your passport if you will be boating internationally.  Read about what type of boating licenses are required.

Soft-sided Luggage

Try and get everything into soft-sided luggage like a duffel bag or backpack in order to maximize storage space on board. Hard luggage is more difficult to fit into closets and cabinets.

Smaller Grab-Bag

Items of importance, such as your wallet, cash, keys, passport, prescription meds, credit cards, and phone should all be stored in a small bag that is easy to grab and go in the case of an emergency. Also include in this bag a printed list of emergency contact names and phone numbers, your insurance policy number and number, and doctor names and numbers.

We hope this one goes without saying! Always pack more sunscreen than you ever think you’ll need. Choose non-oil-based sunscreens in order to protect your yacht’s upholstery and wooden finishes as much as possible. Lip balm with SPF and insect repellent are also recommended.

While sunglasses are recommended for passengers, they are essentially a must-have for drivers.  The sun can be particularly blinding while boating as the rays reflect off the water. Sunglasses also shield a boat operator’s eyes from splashing water so they can stay focused on the task at hand.

Polaroid sunglasses with UV protection can further reduce the amount of glare coming into your eyes from reflected light, allowing your iris to stay open wider and improving your sight.

Some sailors even swear by having goggles on board for when the weather turns really bad and you need protection from heavy rains but without the shaded lenses.  

Ziploc Bags

Ziploc bags or dry bags are great for more than just keeping money and electronics dry during day trips to the beach. You can also use Ziploc bags for dirty or wet clothes, and for sealing opened bags of snacks! Never underestimate all the uses there are for Ziploc bags on any type of trip.

Prescriptions & Seasickness Pills

If you’re prone to seasickness – and many people are no matter how often they go boating – consider packing seasickness or anti-nausea medication. Remember to also bring enough of your prescription medications for longer trips.

First Aid Kit

Always make sure your watertight or waterproof first aid kit is fully stocked before heading out, and includes all the usual suspects such as gauze, bandages, aspirin, antibiotic ointment and gloves. Flares, matches, a water-resistant flashlight and fire extinguishers are also a must.

When you buy a yacht through Van Isle Marina, our yacht brokers will make sure you know about all of the safety gear you are required to have on board.

Speaking of flashlights, bring an additional light on board that is kept separate from the first aid kit. Even better, a headband light for hands-free chart navigation and engine space inspections is extremely handy. Don’t forget to bring extra batteries!

Entertainment

Consider bringing DVDs and CDs with you to enjoy, which are more reliable than streaming services and don’t require special devices that need recharging. By all means, bring your tablet and smartphones too – most yachts will have a charging station or two. Also remember games, playing cards, pens and paper, and a few books and magazines.

Binoculars and cameras can also come in handy; binoculars for birdwatching and cameras for sunsets.

Sailing Knife and Marlinspike

For safety and convenience, consider carrying a knife and marlinspike secured to your belt with a lanyard. The knife is handy for cutting through sailing rope and the marlinspike can help pry open strands of rope for splicing. Folding knives with a three-inch blade and marlinspike work in a pinch, but a straight blade rigging knife and a separate marlinspike in a sheath is better in emergencies.

Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs)

Make sure there are enough PFDs for everyone on board, in the appropriate sizes. Inform everyone on board where the PFDs are stowed.

Bring more than one cap or hat on board to protect you from the sun, cold, and rain. Consider a large-brimmed hat for sunny weather, and a breathable, microfiber material cap for nighttime watches to keep you warm.

Spare Clothes

Without overpacking to the extreme, we recommend bringing spare clothing, like a spare pair of shoes and a backup bathing suit. In the event that things get wet (as they happen to do aboard a boat!) and don’t have a chance to dry out, having extra sets will certainly increase your comfort on board.

Rainy Weather Gear

When it rains, you’ll want more than just a hat. For longer boating trips, bring a raincoat, bib-pants, thick socks, and sea boots geared to the conditions in which you’ll be cruising. Whether it’s warm or cold weather, go for modern microfiber synthetic layers, including thermal underwear and a neck warmer for better comfort.

If you’ll be sailing and using sailing lines, gloves are going to be a must to prevent blistered, rope-burned hands. Full-length sailing gloves cover everything except the tips of your fingers and provide the best protection when working sailing sheets, halyards, and anchoring rode.

Personal Locator Beacon

A Personal Locator Beacon or Personal Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB) is a small hand-held device that allows you to transmit a distress signal directly to the authorities in case of an emergency. Your yacht comes equipped with an EPIRP, but personal EPIRPs are available as added peace of mind.

Some types of these devices are available with strobe lights, which can greatly assist during man-overboard situations.

Hand-held GPS Unit

A hand-held GPS unit could be handy for anyone acting as backup to the skipper, or for use on shore for day hikes, for example.

Unless you plan on catching your own food every day that you’re on board, make sure your galley is stocked with enough sustenance for the duration of your trip, or enough to get you to the nearest port.

Items to Leave on Your Boat

Some items only have to be packed onto your boat once, when you first acquire your boat:

• Kitchen supplies like cookware, utensils, cups, plates, bowls etc
• Beach towels and bathing towels
• Cleaning supplies (vacuum cleaner and mop)

When it comes to packing for a boating trip, we hope the above list helps you determine what is most important to bring. In a story that is becoming terrifyingly common, another yacht was sunk this week by a gang of orcas in the Strait of Gibraltar. And new research from scientists at the University of British Columbia shows that these killer whales are so efficient at breathing, they can perform a dive on just a single breath of air.

The researchers combined drone footage with data from tags suction-cupped to 11 orcas off the coast of B.C. to gather information on the animals’ habits. They found that the whales in their study took about 1.2 breaths per minute while resting, and 1.5 to 1.8 per minute while travelling or hunting.

In comparison, humans take about 15 breaths per minute while at rest, and between 40 and 60 when exercising. “It’s the equivalent of holding your breath and running to the grocery store, shopping, and coming back before breathing again,” said co-author Dr. Beth Volpov in a press release on the study, which was published in the journal PLOS ONE .

The study also confirmed what scientists had long suspected; that orcas take just a single breath of air between dives. “Killer whales are like sprinters who don’t have the marathon endurance of blue and humpback whales to make deep and prolonged dives,” said co-author Dr. Andrew Trites. However, they make the most of each breath.

That energy was on full display last Sunday, when the Alboran Cognac, a 15-metre sailing yacht travelling in the narrow body of water that separates southern Spain from North Africa, was attacked and eventually sunk by a pod of orcas. It was the fifth sinking in just three years in the region around southwest Europe. No humans have been injured or killed in the attacks.

The yacht’s two-person crew radioed for help and was soon rescued by a passing oil tanker. But the vessel’s hull had sustained serious damage and the boat began to take on water, which eventually caused it to sink, according to news reports .

A group of around 40 orcas live off the coasts of Spain, Portugal, Morocco and Gibraltar, and have been attacking boats across this region since 2020. Most occur between May and August in or near the Strait of Gibraltar, but a month ago a group of whales was seen circling a large yacht off the coast of northern Spain, suggesting they were spreading out their activities further and earlier than in other years.

Spain’s Maritime Safety and Rescue Society has put out a release warning sailors of the attacks, with a map of areas to avoid if possible, and advice to stay close to the shore, within safe limits.

The translated statement adds: “It is prohibited to use deterrent measures against orcas that may cause death, damage, annoyance or concern to these cetaceans and, as long as it does not pose a danger to people or animals, it is suggested that photographs be taken of the specimens to have better registration and identification. The photographs will be sent by email to the nearest Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre.”
