(Many thanks to Henry Gomez for his in-depth research into the history of the Sovereign brand. A more detailed account can be found at the link above.) Custom Fiberglass Products of Florida, founded by Robbie Bowen, built the decks, liners, and hulls for Captiva Yachts and Sovereign Yachts. (Sovereign Yachts was founded by Doug Steeg.) When Sovereign Yachts closed in 1988, CFP assumed ownership of the molds, and built a few boats on their own but continued to use the Sovereign name. As a result, one Sovereign model may have have been sold under a number of different names. Many came from a single hull mold, with a deck, interior and rig that also changed from year to year. Summary of the chronology of the Sovereign Yacht building business: **Sovereign Yacht Co. 1978-1988.** Models : 7.0; 5.0 (scaled down 7.0); 17, 18 and Antares 17. The 7.0. 23’, 24’, Anteres 24 all came from the same hull design but had different decks. **Custom Fiberglass Products of Florida. 1988-1994** They were awared the Sovereign Yacht Co. molds. Introduced the Sovereign 20 and began building the Hen boats designed by Reuben Trane in 1992. After CFPF went out of business, Terry Chapman, reportedly a salesman for CFPF, optained the rights to the molds. However it wasn’t until 1996 he started Sovereign 96 but quickly struggled and was bought out that same year by Jim MacDougald who started Sovereign Americs, Inc **Sovereign America, Inc 1996-1998** Out of business. Horrible. Shipped our 290 SeaRay to them to sell. Never heard much from them, and had to pursue through emails and calls. All that they ever did was lower the price. 11 months later we send someone to pick it up because we are so disappointed with Sovereign. Only then do we find out that there had been a gas spill in the boat upon its arrival. Sovereign tore out the brand-new carpeting and then let it sit like that for those 10 months. Never a call, never an email. Their own contract said they were obliged to keep in touch, and inform us of anything that might affect the sale. One would think torn out carpeting and a gas smell might. They also broke the trim and never called about that either, so that may have happened upon arrival too. Then they insisted they had earned the $200 a month, because that was for cleaning, and had nothing to do with selling the boat. The President could not seem to understand that Sovereign had breached the contract, and that our boat was never in salable condition, and that there was a signed obligation to tell us that. Meanwhile, we're paying $700 a month on the boat and insurance, waiting for it to sell. Ultimately decided to file formal complaint against Yacht and Ship Brokers licenses of both Sovereign as well as David Higgins

Very hard to deal with. The owner gets so upset he can't think straight, or take responsibility for things. He has upset numerous sellers as well as employees. Look at BBB or the Facebook comments.

SOVEREIGN is a stunning vintage Jack Hargrave-designed Burger that has been continually maintained and upgraded over time by conscientious owners and a professional crew.  Accommodation for up to 8 guests is found in 4 beautifully appointed ensuite staterooms.  Presented in beautiful condition, she essentially needs nothing beyond a new owner’s personal touches to enjoy immediate use.

Nearly every system, finish, and feature has been either upgraded or improved aboard SOVEREIGN in recent years.  Paint, decks, head system, new Cummins QSM11’s main engines and Onan 55kw generators, new galley appliances, refreshed interior, new bar area, new upper flybridge lounging area, and a custom swim platform extension with stairs.  No expense has spared aboard SOVEREIGN to ensure her head turning appearance and ready to go condition.

The uniquely styled chic interior of SOVEREIGN has been through a custom refit by American Custom Cabinetry and Ellen Kavanaugh interiors of Palm Beach. Unlike many other classic yachts, the interior of SOVEREIGN is bright, airy, and crisp.  The main salon is a comfortable place to entertain, thanks to her recent custom bar area forward, or watch a movie on the hidden TV.  The aft deck features a larger than normal lounging settee and a beautiful custom-fitted sliding high low dining table finished in high gloss teak.  A cleverly redesigned formal dining room forward now functions as an “eat-in-kitchen”. The galley has been recently upgraded with first-class stainless appliances and provides excellent facilities and prep/plating space for any chef.  Accommodation for 8 guests in 4 traditionally appointed ensuite staterooms is below and aft.  Crew accommodation for 5 in 3 staterooms is below and forward.

SOVEREIGN - Launched as TITAN - was the largest yacht ever built in aluminum at the time. The yacht's designer, Jack Hargrave, was very proud of this fact which made her 30,000 pounds lighter than if she were built out of steel and allowed her a shallower, more Bahamas friendly, draft, and achieved the same performance with about 15 percent less horsepower. Her interior was described as "over the top" for her day, and she originally contained two full beam fore and aft staterooms along with a small "emergency stateroom" or starboard mid-stateroom. Eventually, the full beam aft stateroom was split and another ensuite head was added to make SOVEREIGN the four-stateroom yacht she is today. Her original Carpathian elm burl and Brazilian rosewood is still visible and in beautiful shape in the staterooms and the main deck/salon still features modern and crisp white paneling. Much like her first furnishings, she features sleek contemporary mid-century modern furniture offering bright pops of color throughout.  Her aft deck was appointed with unusually deep lounge seating surrounding the table. 

It is very rare to come across a yacht that has had such fantastic continuous care and updates throughout all her owners. SOVEREIGN is in beautiful condition and needs to be seen to fully appreciate all that she has to offer. She is highly recommended by her broker.

WHY SBC MEMBERSHIP IS MUCH BETTER THAN OWNERSHIP

High Cost to Buy Most new boat prices have gone up 10% in the last year. This is a 30-year trend and shows no sign of changing.

What’s Your Time Worth? In addition to the expense of boat ownership, the time involved for an owner to manage and maintain a boat can easily exceed the time spent on the boat for pleasure. What do you charge an hour for your time?

Annual Operating Expenses Going Up Limited slip availability, fewer tradesman to do repairs and maintenance, and increasing insurance claims from hurricanes have all caused expenses to significantly increase.

What, Me Worry? If you own a boat the answer is “Yes!” Potential problems on your boat are everywhere: a leaky fuel line, a split raw water intake hose, a frayed electrical wire, galvanic corrosion… that’s just the beginning.

Borrowing Cost Uncertainty Access to easy, cheap money for financing purchases like homes, cars, and boats appears to be ending as interest rates rise.

Asset Depreciation . An industry rule of thumb is that the value of a new boat drops 25% upon delivery and after 4-5 years of use it will be worth 50% of the purchase price.

THE TIME HAS COME FOR SHARED ACCESS TO BOATS

Boat clubs, rental companies, and fractional-ownership operations are popping up all over the country because “shared access” is the future for high-priced assets such as planes, trucks, heavy equipment and boats.

Low-cost, Small Boat Clubs The largest boat clubs are designed for entry level boaters on a limited budget. Boats that cost $25-50k typically don’t have amenities like toilets, joystick docking and dual engines. And, usage is limited to half days if you are lucky enough to get a reservation at all on weekends.

Day Rentals Ideal for non-boaters who go out once or twice a year.  These boats are usually kept at their owner’s house or on a trailer. The quality, amenities, and condition of the boats vary. For insurance reasons, rentals often require a licensed captain.

Yacht Charter Bareboat yacht charter companies operating in exotic or desirable locations, such as the Caribbean or the Bahamas, last a week, and cost $18k or more in high season. Crewed charters of large boats typically cost $40k or more per week, depending on the size of the boat.

Fractional-Ownership An option usually limited to large boats costing several million dollars — fractions are usually kept to 25% or more. All costs of buying, annual operation, and management is borne by the fractional owners. Four-to-five-year commitments are usually required, but ownership is typically transferable.

HOW SBC MEMBERSHIP WORKS

There is nothing quite like owning your own boat -- except being a member of Sovereign Boat Club. SBC is the closest thing to ownership, because you are a member of a boat that is virtually “yours” nearly whenever you want it! Two of our members describe SBC like this.

Here’s How Our Program works

• SBC Membership is in a specific boat. You choose a boat near you that fits your needs, then “join” that boat. There are annual dues, just like a yacht club, and fixed monthly maintenance fees.
• Different Membership Costs for Different Boats. Each SBC boat is owned by a private individual and because they are all different, and cost from $250,000 to $900,000, the price of annual dues and monthly maintenance fees vary accordingly. Memberships in the least expensive boats are the lowest cost, and so on. For that reason, reciprocal privileges are not available, with some exceptions.
• Seasonal memberships are available. SBC’s 3-6 month seasonal membership programs are ideal for snowbirds who only spend winters in Florida.
• Membership is limited to 8 members in each boat, but our experience is that there is usually an average of 6 members in a specific boat at any one time. That means, you can get the boat virtually anytime you want it.
• The boat is reserved online using SBC’s dedicated reservation system. Each member is allowed to have 4 reservations on the calendar at any one time. Once you have used one of those days, you may then book your next outing. In this way you always have 4 days reserved. By reserving in advance, you can be assured of having the boat when you want it.
• The boat is reserved for full days, even on weekends. This is one of the advantages of SBC’s programs over entry-level boat clubs. Because they have 12-13 members per boat, and most want to use the boat on weekends, they must restrict weekend use to 4 hours.
• Consecutive multiple bookings. One of the most exciting things about boating is taking a cruise up or down the Florida coast, one of the best cruising grounds in the world. All members are able to book 4 consecutive days which makes it is possible to visit (and swim with) the manatees in Crystal River, or fish and cruise in the Everglades National Park.

Jacksonville, FL — U.S. District Judge Mark E. Walker today sentenced Judy Grace Sellers to five years in federal prison for conspiracy to submit false tax returns and defraud the U.S. Treasury, substantive counts of aiding in the preparation of false tax returns, and filing a false lien against the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, followed by a consecutive four-year sentence for failure to appear. Sellers was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $23,264.08, representing the unrecovered loss from the tax counts. Sellers originally was indicted in December 2014. Her indictment was superseded to add a charge for absconding while on bond in February 2024. She was convicted on all counts by a federal jury on March 1, 2024.

According to evidence presented at trial, in 2008 and 2009, Sellers operated a website called commercialredemption.com on which she promoted the use of IRS Form 1099-OID to commit tax fraud. Sellers identified as a “sovereign citizen” and perpetuated the false premise that the U.S. Treasury maintains secret accounts attributed to every U.S. citizen that can be drawn on by filing a series of bogus documents with the Treasury and other government entities.

As part of this fraud scheme, Sellers also promoted the use of IRS Form 1099-OID to fraudulently report to the IRS debts – including mortgages, student loans, credit card debts, and court judgments – as income, along with 100% withholdings of that “income” in informational returns to overcome the IRS’s internal controls and induce the IRS to issue refunds that were not owed. The proper use of the 1099-OID form is for companies such as brokers to report to the IRS income received by the purchaser of a discounted security. Sellers personally created and submitted to the IRS 1099-OID forms that were fraudulent on their face. After submitting the fraudulent 1099-OID forms, Sellers’s co-conspirators prepared and submitted fraudulent returns seeking massive refunds, in one case exceeding half a million dollars on a single return. All these refunds were based on non-existent 1099-OID “income” and withholdings. The conspiracy resulted in the submission of at least 22 returns requesting fraudulent refunds totaling at least $3.4 million from the IRS.

In 2011, the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Florida filed a civil action to enjoin Sellers from promoting her fraudulent scheme on her commercialredemption.com website. In retaliation, Sellers filed a false lien against the then-U.S. Attorney and a Department of Justice tax attorney who was leading the civil action.

In 2014, Sellers was indicted and arrested on charges of tax fraud and filing a false lien. In January 2015, she was placed on house arrest with a GPS ankle monitor pending trial. In May 2015, Sellers was granted permission by her probation officer to leave her home to get her hair done in preparation for her pretrial hearing a few days later. The next day, Sellers cut off her GPS ankle monitor, flung it on the side of the highway, and absconded.

Sellers was located more than eight and a half years later in New Mexico. Prior to this, Sellers had pleaded guilty to failing to appear for her sentencing in her previous federal counterfeiting case in 2002. In her previous case, Sellers was apprehended living under a false name in Mississippi.

“Today's sentencing emphasizes our resolve in pursuing those who attempt to corrupt our nation's tax system,” said Lani Rosado-Espinal, Acting Special Agent in Charge, CI Tampa Field Office. “No one is above the law in this great nation. Our law enforcement partners are just as committed as we are to ensuring that those seeking to live above the law are brought to justice.”

This case was investigated by IRS Criminal Investigation (CI), the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration, with assistance from the U.S. Marshals Service. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorneys Laura Cofer Taylor and Kelly Milliron.

CI is the criminal investigative arm of the IRS, responsible for conducting financial crime investigations, including tax fraud, narcotics trafficking, money-laundering, public corruption, healthcare fraud, identity theft and more. CI special agents are the only federal law enforcement agents with investigative jurisdiction over violations of the Internal Revenue Code, obtaining a more than a 90 percent federal conviction rate. The agency has 20 field offices located across the U.S. and 12 attaché posts abroad.

Man accused of driving boat that killed girl had 'no knowledge' of accident, lawyer says

Authorities in South Florida have identified the person driving a boat in the hit-and-run death of 15-year-old girl over the weekend.

Carlos Guillermo Alonso, 78, of Coral Gables was piloting a 42-foot Boston Whaler in Key Biscayne when officials say his boat struck Ella Riley Adler , according to a Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission incident report obtained by The Palm Beach Post , part of the USA TODAY NETWORK.

According to the report, the girl was wakeboarding and fell into the water before she was struck by Alonso's vessel.

The man driving the boat left the scene without stopping, witnesses told the agency. Ella was retrieved by the other boat but died of her injuries, according to the report.

When was Ella Adler struck by a boat?

According to new information released in the report, Ella was struck wakeboarding in waters off Key Biscayne on Saturday afternoon.

Initial reports from the FWC indicated the girl had been waterskiing.

The agency reported Ella fell in the ocean  near Nixon Beach  while being towed about a mile from shore and was struck by another vessel at 4:30 p.m.

The beach is in Miami-Dade County about 7 miles south of downtown Miami.

Ella was wakeboarding behind a 42-foot 2017 Hanse Fjord yacht near a sandbar at the same time as another unidentified female on a wake surfboard rode, officers wrote in the report.

Ella and the other female being towed fell into the water at different times and locations.

While waiting to be recovered by her boat, another vessel struck her and fled the scene, officials said. A witness said the boat did not appear to swerve or slow down when it hit the girl.

Ella, who wore a life jacket, died from her injuries.

Who is Carlos Guillermo Alonso?

Alonso is 78 and lives in Coral Gables . The city is about 5 miles from downtown Miami. According to his attorney, Lauren Krasnoff, her client goes by the name Bill.

Investigators said it was unclear if Alonso knew Ella was hit or whether alcohol was a factor.

Krasnoff told USA TODAY on Friday Alonso does not drink and did not know he struck anyone on the water.

Here is a statement in full released to USA TODAY from his attorney:

"This is the worst possible tragedy and before saying anything else, we want to express our deepest sympathies to Ella Adler’s family and friends.

There have been numerous requests for Carlos Alonso, who goes by “Bill,” to make a statement. Because this is an ongoing investigation with which he is fully cooperating, he will not be making any statements to the media other than to say that he was beyond devastated to learn that he may have been involved in this awful tragedy.

I will tell you that Bill, who has been boating for 50 years and is a very experienced boater who knows these waters, was out boating by himself on Saturday. He has no knowledge whatsoever of having been involved in this accident. If he hit Ella that day, he certainly did not know it. Had Bill thought he hit anything, he absolutely would have stopped. But he did not at any point think that he had hit anything, let alone a person. He docked his boat in plain sight right behind his house. When Fish and Wildlife contacted Bill on Sunday, he did not know why they were reaching out to him. He did not even know there was an accident on the water the day before, but immediately met with law enforcement, spoke to them without a lawyer, and has been cooperating with law enforcement eversince.

Bill is 78 years old and came to the United States from Cuba in operation Peter Pan. He has never had any contact with the criminal justice system. He does not drink and was not drinking on Saturday, May 11, and he was driving his boat safely at a reasonable rate of speed.

Bill is a good man and he is absolutely devastated by the loss of this intelligent, accomplished and beautiful young woman. He has cooperated 100% with law enforcement and will continue to do so. As I said, this is an ongoing investigation. So we will have no further comment at this time."

The FWC reported Alonso's vessel was in custody on Tuesday and Alonso was cooperating with the investigation.

Has anyone been arrested in Ella Adler's death?

Officials did not say whether Alonso was facing charges in connection to the fatal hit-and-run.

They also did not say what day they located the suspect vessel.

Who was Ella Adler?

Ella, a ballerina, lived in Miami Beach, officials said, and attended  Ransom Everglades High School  in Miami.

"She was a force of nature, and when she was near, everyone felt a gravitational pull toward her," her obituary reads. "She loved to dance, she loved her friends, and most of all she loved her family."

She is the granddaughter of Michael Adler, the current  U.S. Ambassador to Belgium , according to the  Miami Herald .

She is survived by her parents, Amanda and Matthew Adler, and her younger siblings Jaden and Adalynn, and many other relatives.

Reward being offered in Ella Adler's hit-and-run boating death

A $20,000 reward − $10,000 from Ella's family and a combined $10,000 from FWC and Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers − is being offered for information in the case.

Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact those agencies.

8 taken to hospital after airboat crash in Central Florida

Eight people were taken to a hospital Friday morning after an airboat crashed in Kissimmee.

There were 11 people on the boat and all were in stable condition, Osceola County Fire Rescue spokesperson Joshua Holder said.

The crash took place in Lake Tohopekaliga when the boat struck a sandbar in a canal by Neptune Road near Partin Triangle Park, according to the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said there were only two people with minor injuries from the impact and everyone on board had lifesaving devices but did not elaborate further.

The Coast Guard and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission are investigating the incident.
