superyachts in australia

2 July 2021

Private yacht charters are on the rise.

Here, we showcase the sleekest vessels in local waters..

Think superyachts, think the French Riviera, where boats hosting royalty, rock stars and the seriously rich turn heads in the likes of Monaco and Saint Tropez.

Those destinations may be off the agenda for now, but that doesn’t mean Australians can’t have the superyacht experience.

There are about 60 fully crewed luxurious boats available for charter in local waters, and Australia’s 34,000-kilometre coastline means itinerary options are countless. The vessels range in length from 25 to 55 metres, and cost from $50,000 to $360,000 a week, accommodating up to 12 passengers.

Most are based in Sydney, Perth, Airlie Beach or Port Douglas, but owners are generally happy to relocate their boat, whether to Cape York, the Whitsundays, the

Coral Coast or Tasmania. And now that yachts and crew that have been in New Zealand for 14 days or more can come to New South Wales and Queensland without going into quarantine, more boats from across the ditch may soon be available.

Joachim Howard, founder of leading yacht agency Ocean Alliance, says the pandemic has sparked a surge in interest in superyacht charters. Winter destinations such as Queensland and the Kimberley are in high demand. “Private yacht charter is highly customised and adaptable to changing environments and guest requirements, which is appealing in the climate of fluid Covid restrictions,” Howard says. “Many of our clients are generational families or groups of friends who would typically travel together internationally. The platform of a private yacht allows you to curate every aspect of an itinerary, so there’s a greater ability to develop a unique experience with complete flexibility.”

Take your pick from these Australia-based vessels, plus one New Zealand option for adventures further afield and a French Polynesian selection to fuel dreams of another travel bubble.

Only two years old, this 35-metre yacht is homeported in Perth, from where

Rottnest Island is a popular destination; from May to October it cruises the Kimberley. It has a sleek, sporty design in a contemporary palette of blond timber, grey and silver, with a splash of snazzy marble in the bathrooms.

Spread out on the double sun lounges at the bow or soak in the glass-edged Jacuzzi on the aft sundeck. The salon has plush sofas and a formal dining table, while casual meals can be taken at the stern or on the sundeck with retractable roof.

Where Western Australia.

Extras Tenders, fishing equipment, jet skis, underwater scooters, waterskis, wakeboard and donut (depending on location, given the presence of salties). Cost From $24,000 a night plus APA (advanced provisioning allowance; see opposite); up to 12 guests. oceanalliance.com

Stunning Indigenous artworks and artefacts from Australia and the Pacific region adorn the walls and shelves of Akiko, a muscular dark-grey superyacht that looks ready for action.

What this vessel lacks in appointments, such as Jacuzzis, alfresco bars and bowlounges for Instagram posing, it makes up for with sports gear. Scuba-diving, spearfishing, snorkelling, surfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking are all on the agenda along the coast of Western Australia, including the remote Abrolhos and Montebello Islands.

Where Western Australia – Perth to the Kimberley.

Extras Tender, barra boat, jet skis and underwater scooters.

Cost From $22,000 a night plus APA; up to 10 guests. oceanalliance.com

Never has a superyacht seemed so perfectly matched to its name. The Beast looks like it belong sin the military and appears equipped to tackle any mission.

Almost 40 metres long and 12 metres wide, the twin-hulled vessel is designed for stability. Don’t let the brutalist exterior fool you; there’s no roughing it on The Beast. Pull up a pew at the top-deck bar, watch a chef work some magic at the outdoor teppanyaki grill, or stretch out on the leather lounge in the cinema room.

Interiors are minimalist and a wash in grey and black, interspersed with striking artworks. Not surprisingly, it’s kitted out with a huge range of water equipment, including 12 sets of scuba gear and a compressor, plus a 13-metre sports fishing boat called Baby Beast that can be craned into position.

Where New Zealand, Australia later this year.

Extras Tenders, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, wakeboard and water skis, pedalpowered catamaran and fishing equipment.

Cost From $US26,500 (around $34,500) a night plus APA and tax; up to 12 guests.

DE LISLE III

This 42-metre floating palace is built for fun, with an array of water toys and ample outdoor living areas. The boat underwent a refit in 2018, so has the latest in technology and comfort, with timber-panelled formal spaces and soothing sleeping quarters, two of which stretch the width of the vessel.

A new addition is a six-metre by 4.5-metre inflatable floating jet-ski dock, which can be attached to the stern and doubles as a sunbathing zone.

Where The Whitsundays, Great Barrier Reef, Tropical North Queensland.

Extras Tender, jet skis, stand-up paddleboards, wakeboard, kayaks, surfboards, dive gear and compressor, fishing equipment, yoga and gym gear.

Cost From $26,000 a night plus APA; 8-10 g uests.oceanalliance.com

With a circular bow lounge and stairs leading like a catwalk to a sparkling Jacuzzi, Masteka 2 is quite the showboat. It’s also an excellent choice for extended families or two family groups, with a range of bedding options in five cabins.

There’s loads of space for sunset cocktails on the aft deck, while the main salon has white leather couches and dark timber trim, formal dining area and a wellequipped bar.

Where Queensland from June to October; Sydney from November.

Extras Tenders, jet ski, Seabobs, wakeboards, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, water skis, diving hookah, scuba, snorkelling and gym gear.

Cost From $25,000 a night, all-inclusive; up to 12 guests. oceanalliance.com

PERLE BLEUE

With a Jacuzzi and teppanyaki bar on the top deck, plus an inflatable slide to whisk guests into the water, this 38-metre yacht screams decadence. Interiors by Donald Starkey nod to 1930s French salons, with rosewood furniture and elegant artworks.

An airy sky lounge offers water views out floor-to-ceiling windows, while the bridge deck has plenty of space for alfresco dining and lazing. Materials in the opulent master ensuite include Jerusalem stone, abalone mother of pearl tiles and glass basins.

Where The Whitsundays, Queensland; New Zealand towards the end of the year.

Extras Tenders, jet skis, Seabobs, kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, wakeboards, waterskis, snorkelling, fishing and gym gear.

Cost From $19,280 a night plus APA; up to 12 guests. oceanalliance.com

This 35-metre explorer-style beauty was recently crowned yacht of the year in Boat International’s Ocean Awards for 2021. The win recognises the boat’s participation in the Great Reef Census, in which scientists from Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef came aboard and tested equipment and survey techniques from Lizard Island to Port Douglas.

With 40 per cent of the reef unsurveyed, yacht guests have the option of participating in data collection for conservation work. Beluga has many other features to recommend it, including uber-luxe interiors and a Jacuzzi on the sundeck. A major drawcard for divers and fishers is Minke, the dedicated 12-metre chaseboat (with dive platform) provided.

Where Port Douglas, Tropical North Queensland, Great Barrier Reef, the Whitsundays.

Extras Tenders, scuba gear, Seabobs, stand-up paddleboards, fishing and gym equipment.

Cost From $25,000 a night, all-inclusive; up to 10 guests. oceanalliance.com

SILENTWORLD

Glossy timber panelling and creamy furnishings make this 40-metre superyacht an elegant choice if the Pacific bubble becomes a reality.

The sundeck has an abundance of shaded lounges near a six-person Jacuzzi, plus there’s a roomy bridge deck. This long-range yacht comes equipped for adventure, including 10 sets of scuba gear and a compressor.

It’s been sailing French Polynesia since 2018, so the crew knows the best spots to see manta rays or nibble sunset canapés on a sand cay.

Where French Polynesia; Australia next year.

Extras Tenders, jet ski, Seabobs, stand-up paddleboards, kayaks, snorkelling and scuba gear, fishing and spearfishing gear, ski tubes, wakeboards, elliptical machine.

Cost From $US19,500 (around $25,400) a night plus APA and tax; up to 12 guests. oceanalliance.com

Here’s one out of left field. It’s not shiny and new, but Duyfken has a tale to tell. The ship, the latest addition to the Australian Maritime Museum fleet, is a replica of Dutchman Willem Janszoon’s vessel, which sailed from Indonesia to the west coast of Cape York in 1606.

The navigator and his crew became the first Europeans to set foot in Australia, 164 years before James Cook. The replica, completed in 1999 in Fremantle, arrived in Sydney on Christmas Eve last year.

It’s open to museum visitors and conducts regular afternoon sailings on the harbour. But for a unique experience, gather 23 friends and take Duyfken on an exclusive outing on the harbour.

Where Sydney Harbour.

Cost From $2500 for a minimum three hours; up to 24 guests; catering extra.

KERI-LEE III

At a whopping 55 metres in length, this is one of the biggest superyachts in Australia, and one of the few with six cabins, two of which run the full beam of the vessel.

Work out in the gym while watching dolphins in the distance or submit to a session with the on-board masseuse. Interiors are traditional, with plenty of dark timber, leather, hefty couches, marble and gold.

The sundeck is vast and includes a generous Jacuzzi and there’s no shortage of other alfresco zones to perch. Ideal for a multigeneration getaway.

Where The Kimberley, Queensland, the Great Barrier Reef.

Extras Tender, rigid-hulled inflatable boat, kayaks, Waverunners, stand-up paddleboards, waterskis, wakeboards, snorkelling and fishing gear.

Cost From $49,000 a night plus APA; up to 12 guests. oceanalliance.com

White Rabbit is proof that no superyacht project is too ambitious for the team at Echo Yachts, and that the creation of your dream yacht can be handled from design, through build, to delivery at Echo Yachts.

Archer Point North Queensland Australia

The Best Time for a Superyacht Charter in Australia

Because Australia is so vast and varied, different regions have different ideal climates. North Queensland, the most popular charter destination, has two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from May through to October, bringing low humidity, cooling breezes, and glorious sunshine. Cruising conditions in southern Australia are at their best from January to March while locations like the Kimberleys are ideal between May and September.

Typical charters last around 7 days but can be extended at your will. The beauty of a Yomira superyacht charter in Australia is the freedom of choice. Choose where you go and when on a bespoke voyage that is tailored entirely around you. There is no better way to do it.

Australian adventures for…

Family & friends, culture & gastronomy, learning & conservation, exploration & adventure, freedom & serenity.

It’s no secret that opportunities for gathering with loved ones for true quality time together can be few and far between. With a private superyacht charter, you get a dedicated space to spend with your nearest and dearest – and some spectacular scenery to boot. Where better to celebrate occasions or important milestones than on a luxury crewed superyacht? Let us help you create unique, treasured memories with family and friends with our bespoke voyages.

Australia offers a honeypot of activities for family and friends. Watersports toys on many superyachts mean there will never be a dull moment as the ocean becomes a playground. Iconic cities provide opportunities for cosmopolitan carousal while marine life is extraordinary. Exploration, exhilaration, relaxation: there’s ample opportunity for it all on an Australian superyacht charter.

The culture of Australia is as varied as it’s lands. The Whitsundays are known as Ngaro country, reflecting the historical Aboriginal presence in this territory. In fact, archaeological research has pointed to 8,000 years of human habitation here. The best way to learn about it all is from the indigenous Australians themselves, as they take you to sacred spots showcasing incredible art and tell you the stories of their people.

For gastronomical delights, Australia is blessed with a fantastic food and wine industry. Every superyacht will have a world-class chef on board who can tailor menus to showcase Western Australia’s culinary excellence, including local delicacies like delicate pearl meat. You could even catch your dinner yourself, with plenty of opportunities for fishing oysters, barramundi, and yellow tuna.

At Yomira, we have a pure love for the ocean. Sustainable sailing and ethical cruising are at the heart of who we are. This is reflected in our dedication to providing experiences centred around learning and conservation. Australia is one of the best locations on Earth to this end, with the incomparable Great Barrier Reef, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

We can arrange exclusive access to one of the most magical experiences in the world: swimming with Minke whales. This is a rare opportunity, only available in this region in June and July, to connect with one of the most majestic creatures on the planet. With our contacts and experience, we can provide you with top-of-the-range snorkelling and diving equipment and a dedicated guide that will make your experience utterly inimitable.

And it’s not just the Great Barrier Reef that holds natural wonders. Magnificent arrays of marine life abound in the Whitsundays, 74 islands to the south of the Great Barrier Reef, including 6 species of marine turtles that are all listed as threatened. Yomira allows you to explore our natural world fully and respectfully.

Australia abounds with adventurous exploration opportunities. From the feral outbacks of the Kimberley to the tropical isles of the Whitsundays, it’s not just world-class dive spots to explore. Hike Whitsunday peak to reach sweeping 360 degree views over Cid harbour. Swim in the rainforest lagoons found in the Kimberley. Experience horizontal waterfalls and imposing rock formations jutting into the sky across the coastlines.

With our unrivalled list of inland contacts, we can arrange personal guided tours with Aboriginal people to take you to rarely seen spots, regaling you with incredible history and stories. If you want a truly unique view, allow us to take you on a helicopter tour to reveal the world-famous Heart Reef, one of the most photographed spots on earth. Inland, there are wild bush walks with dedicated Aboriginal guides who can take you to sacred rock art for a different flavour of adventure. This is the quintessential Australian experience.

Hill Inlet at Whitehaven Beach on Whitesunday Island

Whitsunday Islands

In the Whitsundays, 74 islands to the south of the Great Barrier Reef National Park in Queensland, platinum sands and aquamarine waters provide the sublime colour palette for your voyage. In the balmy waters, you’ll find a bounty of marine life. Witness and hand-feed the majestic Hump Headed Maori Wrasse or snorkel amongst the 1,500 species of fish.

The teeming reefs of the Whitsundays contain a third of the world’s soft corals, providing endless wonder for your underwater sojourns. Back on deck, you can gaze at the dolphins dashing the waves by your superyacht and feed the sea eagles that soar nearby. Tropical sunrises, lush bushland, and kayaking through beautiful mangroves: this is an Australian island experience you won’t want to miss.

King George River falls in the Kimberley Plateau

The Kimberleys

If a raw, untouched wilderness excites you, venture on charter to the Kimberley, a northwest pocket of Australia that’s utterly secluded. Rugged outback landscapes with roaming wildlife will be your backdrop while you explore the pristine waters and sandstone gorges carved by spectacular waterfalls. Exotic birdlife soars in the skies while prehistoric saltwater crocodiles and barramundi make their home here.

We can take you on an exhilarating excursion to the Buccaneer Archipelago, where magnificent ‘giant tides’ are generated by swirling whirlpools and crashing overflows. Then, the Horizontal Falls. This natural phenomenon is one of the most astonishing sights to behold. Two narrow gorges create huge tidal movements as water passes through them, producing a waterfall effect as the water banks up against one side of the narrow cliff passage, only to be repeated when the tide turns. It is unlike anything you have ever seen.

There’s also rich cultural history to immerse yourself in, too. With our unique contacts, you can learn the stories of the Aboriginal people and view sacred sites where caves are adorned by arresting rock art.

Superyacht Australia

How to become superyacht crew.

superyachts in australia

Superyacht Australia, the peak national industry body for the superyacht industry in Australia, is proud to have published a new resource aimed at making it easy for Australians to start their journey as superyacht crew.  Australians are natural superyacht crew with over 90% of our population living on the coast.  Fishing, surfing, swimming, sailing, and paddling are weekly pastimes for nearly all Aussie kids growing up in and around the water. Many have “saltwater in their veins” with surf lifesaving “Nippers” and sailing club “Tackers” programs training children from the age of five in skills that will be sought after as future superyacht crew.

The superyacht industry has virtually been unknown to young Aussies, with those discovering it as a result of backpacking in Europe or by reality TV shows such as “Below Deck” broadcasting on popular streaming services. Internationally the superyacht industry is booming, with vessels getting much larger, more of them and requiring double the amount of crew as many yachts offer rotational positions for senior crew.

The superyacht industry is also gaining momentum in Australia with popular charter destinations including Sydney, the Queensland coast and the Kimberley’s attracting more yachts. This new resource aims to educate young Aussies on what a superyacht is, where you can find them cruising (within Australia and internationally) and different entry-level roles available onboard.

The qualifications required are easy to complete locally in Australia and can provide a great base for future maritime careers.  The STCW 95 (Standards of Training and Certification for Watchkeepers) certification is the mandatory qualification set by the International Maritime Organisation and takes 8 days to complete including theory and practical courses.

Australia is lucky to have two great training providers including Crew Pacific , based in Cairns, and Superyacht Crew Academy based on the Northern Beaches of Sydney. Both training providers offer STCW courses and further Steward/ess and Deckhand courses, aimed to provide students with the necessary basic knowledge of the interior and exterior departments before starting their first roles. The resource also outlines the Mandatory Certificate of Medical Fitness required to confirm you are medically fit to perform the duties required onboard.

Once qualified, Australia has many recruitment companies eager to place “green” crew into their first role. This includes Hill Maritime , a worldwide maritime recruitment and consultancy firm, that places quality engineers on quality vessels all over the world.  Coastal Yachting Recruitment , based on the Gold Coast, is also experienced in placing professional crew worldwide on luxury superyachts.

David Good, CEO, Superyacht Australia commented “Australia has the reputation for providing the best yacht crew in the world, we have a great education, excellent work ethic, and a relaxed professional attitude. This is our opportunity to travel, get paid exceptionally well, and gain sea-time experience that is highly sought after when you want to come ashore and use that experience.”

Superyacht Australia will be distributing this new resource at career expos in major cities such as Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Gold Coast, and Brisbane where up to 12,000 school leavers per event attend seeking information on future careers.

This new resource can be found on our Superyacht Australia website here: https://www.superyacht-australia.com/superyacht-careers-information/

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

  • Superyachts  are one of the most expensive assets money can buy.
  • The true cost of ownership is even more, adding up to millions a year.
  • Here's how much it costs to own a superyacht — and what that money is going toward.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."

An inside look at jeff bezos’ $500 million superyacht and what it costs to keep it afloat.

Cliché but true, the second-richest man on the planet, according to Forbes , owns the tallest sailing yacht in the world . In fact, the 417-foot Koru is so big, it has its own 250-foot support vessel .

Priced at $500 million, the Koru hit the sea for the first time in 2023 and has since ferried Jeff Bezos and company around the globe. Complete with three massive 229-foot masts, it can reach a top speed under sail of 20 knots, according to the New York Post — which is approximately 23 miles per hour.

Made for a group, up to 18 guests can set sail on the yacht, allowing Bezos to bring family and friends on vacation with him. Here’s a look at the Koru’s extravagant features and how much it costs to operate his floating mansion.

Also take a look at Bezos’ mansion collection.

Key Features

As expected Bezos’ yacht is dripping with luxury. With a net worth of $203.8 billion — as of May 4, 2024, according to Forbes — he can afford to outfit the Koru with nothing but the best and he did just that.

The superyacht has three outdoor decks, with two containing swimming pools, according to the New York Post. It also features a cinema, several lounges and multiple business areas, according to Luxuo .

Highly personalized, the yacht is complete with a figurehead modeled after Bezos’ fiancée Lauren Sanchez. Even its masts are luxurious, as the Amazon founder chose in-boom furlers, which keep the canvases at the bottom of the mast above the deck, creating a pristine and spacious rope-free deck.

For You: Make Yourself Money Smart: 20 ChatGPT Prompts To Increase Your Wealth

Support Vessel

One of the most shocking features of the Koru is the fact that it requires its own support vessel. The $75 million Abeona features a helipad that Sanchez has been spotted using to park her personal helicopter, according to the New York Post.

Designed to carry extra gear, four jet skis, two fast launches and a dinghy were spotted on the Abeona during a 2023 trip to Mallorca, Spain, according to the New York Post. It’s also capable of lifting a small submarine, but Bezos isn’t believed to own one — at least not yet.

Additionally, the support ship has two extra staterooms, which can accommodate four guests. This could come in handy if Bezos wants to entertain a larger group than can fit on the Koru.

On-Board Crew

It probably isn’t a surprise that operating both the Koru and the Abeona is no small task. From staff to drive the boats and maintain them to caring for guests onboard, Bezos needs a small army at sea.

The Koru has a crew of up to 36 people, according to The New York Post. If you think that’s a lot, the Abeona requires up to 45 crew and support staff.

Annual Operating Costs

Purchasing the Koru and Abeona cost Bezos more than half a billion dollars, but his expenses didn’t end there. As you might imagine, the annual cost to maintain a superyacht and its own enormous supporting yacht is more than most people earn in a lifetime.

The Koru costs approximately $25 million in operating expenses per year, according to the Daily Mail . Much less, but still sky-high, Bezos spends around $5 to $10 million on annual maintenance costs for the Abeona, according to Super Yacht Fan ).

When their owners are on dry land, yachts have to find a parking space. However, even this doesn’t always come cheap for Bezos and the Koru.

In November 2023, the billionaire’s yacht arrived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but was too big to fit in the port with all the outer superyachts, according to the Daily Mail. Therefore, it had to be docked with cruise ships at Port Everglades, at a rate of $16,500 per week.

While one week of storage might be more than the average person can afford, picking up the tab for any number of weeks would clearly be no issue for Bezos. While his superyacht and the many expenses surrounding it are clearly astronomical, he’s still living well within his budget.

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

<p>It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.</p>

<p>Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.</p>

<p>This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. <p>Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.</p>

DALLAS (AP) — The National Rifle Association is kicking off its annual meeting Friday in downtown Dallas, gathering for the first time in decades without Wayne LaPierre at the helm as board members prepare to elect his replacement.

Though beset by financial troubles and following a trial in which a jury found LaPierre misspent millions of the NRA’s money , the group remains a political force. Upwards of 70,000 people are expected at the three-day event with a scheduled speech by former President Donald Trump, seminars, receptions and acres of guns and gear.

A board of directors meeting on Monday is expected to include elections of LaPierre’s replacement and other officers.

“The immediate question is: Who leads the organization and what direction do they go in the post-Wayne LaPierre NRA?” asked Robert Spitzer, a professor emeritus at the State University of New York-Cortland who has written several books on gun policies.

“They have suffered a series of blows, mostly caused by their own corruption,” Spitzer said.

Trump is set to address members Saturday. At the organization’s Great American Outdoor Show earlier this year, he told those gathered that if he is reelected, “no one will lay a finger on your firearms.”

The city of Detroit — which has seen an exodus of tens of thousands of people — since the 1950s — has grown in population for the first in more than six decades, according to U.S. Census estimates. Data released Thursday, May 16, 2024, show Detroit's population rose by 1,852 people from 631,366 in 2022 to 633,218 last year. (AP Photo/Paul Sancya, File)

RECENT WOES

A New York jury in February found LaPierre wrongly used millions of dollars of the organization’s money to pay for an extravagant lifestyle that included exotic getaways and trips on private planes and superyachts. LaPierre resigned as executive vice president and chief executive officer on the eve of the trial.

The jury said LaPierre must repay almost $4.4 million to the NRA, while the organization’s retired finance chief, Wilson Phillips, owed $2 million. The NRA failed to properly manage its assets, omitted or misrepresented information in its tax filings and violated whistleblower protections under New York law, jurors found.

After reporting a $36 million deficit in 2018 fueled largely by misspending, the NRA cut back on longstanding programs that had been core to its mission, including training and education, recreational shooting and law enforcement initiatives.

The NRA filed for bankruptcy in 2021, but a judge dismissed the case , ruling it was not filed in good faith.

LEADERSHIP LIMBO

LaPierre had led the NRA’s day-to-day operations since 1991, acting as its face and becoming one of the country’s most influential figures in shaping gun policy. A fiery proponent of gun rights, he once warned of “jack-booted government thugs” seizing guns and condemned gun-control advocates as “opportunists” who “exploit tragedy for gain.”

Andrew Arulanandam, a top NRA lieutenant who served as LaPierre’s spokesperson, has taken on his leadership roles on an interim basis.

Phillip Journey, a newly reelected member of NRA’s board, said he is among those trying to elect new leadership with hopes that the organization will become more transparent.

“I want to reestablish the trust that the membership has lost in the current leadership and I think that we need to make the board understand that they can speak their mind and not be punished,” said Journey, a Kansas judge, adding that the organization is “at a great crossroads.”

REACTIONS TO MASS KILLINGS

As the NRA meeting opens in Dallas, it has been a year since a neo-Nazi opened fire at a mall in the Dallas suburb of Allen , killing eight people before a police officer ended the rampage .

The organization’s annual meeting last year in Indianapolis fell on the second anniversary of the mass shooting at a FedEx facility in the same city that left nine people dead, only days after mass shootings at a school in Nashville, Tennessee , and a bank in Louisville, Kentucky .

At the 2023 meeting, top Republican hopefuls for the 2024 presidential race vowed to defend the Second Amendment at all costs.

In 2022, the NRA held its annual meeting in Texas just days after a gunman killed 19 students and two teachers at an elementary school in Uvalde . Those taking the stage that year in Houston denounced the massacre while insisting further restrictions on access to firearms were not the answer.

One week after a gunman killed 26 people, mostly children, in 2012 at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut , LaPierre gave a defiant speech saying more gun laws weren’t the answer and called for armed guards at schools. “The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun,” he said.
