Team Abu Dhabi are primed for a big challenge on two powerboat racing stages as one season begins and another reaches its conclusion in the UAE next week.
The experienced pairings of Faleh Al Mansoori with Shaun Torrente and Rashed Al Tayer alongside Majed Al Mansoori are lined up for the opening round of the new UAE Class-3 Offshore Powerboat Championship getting under way in Khor Fakkan on 7th December.
Three days later, triple world champion Torrente will join forces with Thani Al Qemzi and Rashed Al Qemzi as Team Abu Dhabi look for a winning climax to the 2023 UIM F1H2O World Championship at the season’s final round in Sharjah.
While Sweden’s Jonas Andersson has already secured this year’s F1H2O drivers’ crown, Torrente in particular is highly motivated as he returns to action in the series, which saw him clinch the title on Sharjah’s Khalid Lagoon last year, as well as in 2018 and 2019.
Although Andersson and team-team mate Kalle Viippo hold an 11-point lead in the team championship, fourth-placed Team Abu Dhabi have not given up hope of adding to the six titles they have amassed in the last seven seasons.
For that to happen, they will need to dominate the Grand Prix of Sharjah podium, and rely on misfortunes for the Swedes, and second-placed Team Sharjah combination of Sami Seliö and Ferdinand Zandbergen.
Sharjah has produced many dramatic finishes to the F1H2O World Championship, none more so than 12 months ago when Torrente thought his title ambitions had been destroyed when a crash put him out of the race after just eight laps.
Leading after a flying start, Andersson looked set to retain his world title before technical problems on the 28th lap forced his retirement, giving the championship to Torrente, so the Swede will be taking nothing for granted this time.
Torrente said: “I love the event they put on in Sharjah. I love the ambience, and racing in the city on Khalid Lagoon. Unfortunately, this year I won’t be getting another world title, but we’ll still be trying for the win.”

Team Abu Dhabi’s veteran Emirati driver Thani Al Qemzi, who finished third in the championship last season for the sixth time in his distinguished career, would like nothing better than a first victory in Sharjah to lift him from his current fifth place in the standings.
Meanwhile, for his cousin, Rashed Al Qemzi, the Grand Prix of Sharjah offers another chance to shine at the top level after he secured his fourth UIM F2 World Championship title this season with one round to spare.

Torrente And Team Abu Dhabi Gearing Up For 2021 F1 H2O Season
Postponed since the early days of the pandemic, the Union Internationale Motonautique F1 H2O World Championship Series is set to return Sept. 10-12 with the European Grand Prix in San Nazzaro, Italy. Two-time and defending F1 H2O world champion Shaun Torrente is set to rejoin his Abu Dhabi teammates to continue his quest for another world title this season.

“I can’t wait to be back with the team,” said Torrente, who lives in Southwest Florida and is the subject of the most recent episode in the seven-segment Speed On The Water “In The Lead” video series . “The Abu Dhabi International Marine Sports Club under the leadership of Sheikh Mohammed Bin Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan has given us an incomparable opportunity and I’m looking forward to once again represent—and win for— Team Abu Dhabi .”
The upcoming event is F1 H2O’s first race in Italy following a 15-year absence from the country. San Nazzaro is a uniquely familiar setting for Team Abu Dhabi , as the team tests and prepares its race boats there. Headed by international tunnel-boat racing legend Guido Capellini, the DAC tunnel-boat facility also is nearby.
“We are very happy to resume our racing activity in Italy, a location that means a lot for the powerboat world,” said Lavinia Cavallero, the senior vice-president of the H2O organization. “I would like to deeply thank all the people and institutions who with their work and efforts are helping us to realize the Grand Prix.”

Torrente said that he and his Abu Dhabi teammates are equally thrilled to be heading back to region they know so well.
“San Nazzaro is a special place for us,” he explained. “The parents of my radioman Alessandro Cremona operate this racing club, so it’s a big deal for us to have that local connection, in addition to all of the extensive testing we do there.”
Torrente will head to Italy at the end of the month to take part in an extensive pre-season testing program with Team Abu Dhabi . He’ll return to the United States in time to compete alongside his Super Stock-class CMR Roofing team cockpit-mate Eric Belisle to in the P1 Offshore St. Pete Grand Prix, Sept. 3-5, in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Said Torrente (holding trophy), “I can’t wait to be back with the team.”

Gillman's experience the key
Dubai: The Abu Dhabi Team pairing of Thani Atiq Al Qamzi and Ahmad Al Hamli will be out to prove a point when the European leg of the UIM F1 World Powerboat Championship takes off in Portugal next week.
Both Al Qamzi and Al Hamli are just coming into their own following a disastrous opening round of the championship in Qatar earlier this month.
Al Qamzi who was the race leader in Qatar dropped out at the two-thirds mark after being hampered through the weekend with engine maladies.
His teammate Al Hamli also struggled during qualifying and also suffered the same fate to eventually drop out in 16th position to end with no points after one race in the championship.
The Abu Dhabi Team is led by recently retired American four-time World Champion Scott Gillman as the Team Manager.
And it will be Gillman's vast experience that the team will be looking forward to in an attempt to start gaining the points as the season progresses.
Gillman is the defending champion in the Portimao race and he had also won there in 2004.
The 10th edition of the Grand Prix of Portugal will be held along the challenging Arade River on May 3-4.
The 2008 campaign opened with a strong win at the Grand Prix of Qatar for Swedish driver Jonas Andersson leaving American Jay Price of the Qatar Team in second. But the early leaders will have to be wary about former multiple world champion Italian Guido Cappellini, who finished fifth in Doha.
Cappellini has a fantastic track record in Portugal, having gained four pole positions.

Abu Dhabi GP F1 track breakdown: A technical challenge caps off 2023
Stay informed on all the biggest stories in Formula One. Sign up here to receive the Prime Tire newsletter in your inbox every Tuesday and Friday morning.
Yas Marina Circuit is believed to be the most expensive Formula One track ever built.
It rests on Yas Island, which is just east of Abu Dhabi, the capital of the United Arab Emirates, and became the Middle East’s second of now-four F1 tracks, following Bahrain and preceding Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Over the last 11 years, developers have invested $40 billion into the man-made island and built a variety of amenities, including a Ferrari indoor theme park and seven hotels, including the vibrant Yas Viceroy Abu Dhabi.
Building the track took from May 2007 to October 2009, and Yas Marina Circuit joined F1’s calendar that year as the sport’s season finale. Sebastian Vettel bested Red Bull teammate Mark Weber and 2009 world champ Jenson Button during the inaugural race, and a year later, the German driver won his first title at the track. Since 2014, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been the sport’s season finale, F1 wrapping up the long year racing into the night.
Yas Marina Circuit has seen plenty of thrilling moments in its F1 history, like Nico Rosberg’s shocking retirement after winning his first title in 2016, and Max Verstappen’s hotly contested first world championship in 2021.
The final race weekend of 2023 is underway, and here’s what you need to know about the track before the 15th edition of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
Track characteristics
Yas Marina Circuit is another Hermann Tilke-designed track.
All three sectors feature different characteristics, and overtaking can be difficult at other locations than the straights. Sector One features two high-speed corners (Turns 2 and 3) while Sector Two includes two long straights and both DRS zones. Sector Three, meanwhile, appears to be a nod to a street circuit with its design, particularly Monaco, as the track winds around the marina and under a hotel. At Turns 10, 11 and 12, which are in Sector Two, drivers face hard braking with lateral load still on their cars, reducing their stability as they scrub off the speed.
Changes have been made over the years. Working with limited available space, renovations were made in 2021 at a few key parts, like the hotel section, north hairpin and South Marina, to help create overtaking opportunities. The chicane was scrapped in the hairpin, and the former Turns 11-14 were scrapped for the long bend that’s now known as Turn 9.
One of the interesting quirks about the Yas Marina Circuit that’s unlike any other track is that the pit exit goes through a tunnel and under the track.
A sunset challenge
The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix was the first F1 race to take place at sunset, which presented another challenge for teams.
As the sun goes down, the track cools This impacts grip and the car’s balance, and the technical nature of Yas Marina Circuit already makes it difficult to strike the right balance. Understeer also becomes more likely.
With the Abu Dhabi GP being a twilight race with a 5 p.m. local time start, a lighting system is needed around the circuit, and it has been upgraded for this year. The LED system is expected to reduce power consumption by up to 30 percent.

Pressrelese from Team Abu Dhabi :
Team Abu Dhabi face familiar rivals as new series launches in Khor Fakkan
Al Zaffain, Bin Hendi aim for another Class 3 victory in Fazza
Abu Dhabi, UAE, 3 rd December, 2023: Team Abu Dhabi will be up against familiar rivals when they look to start the new UAE Class-3 Offshore Powerboat Championship with a victory in Khor Fakkan on Thursday.
The experienced pairings of Faleh Al Mansoori with Shaun Torrente in Abu Dhabi 4 and Rashed Al Tayer alongside Majed Al Mansoori in Abu Dhabi 5 expect a highly competitive opening round, which is part of the Khor Fakkan Marine Festival.
The revival of Class 3 racing in the UAE began earlier this year, with Arif Al Zaffain and Nadir Bin Hendi taking Fazza to victory in Abu Dhabi.
They will be among the leading contenders in the new championship getting under way in Khor Fakkan, with further rounds to follow in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah.
Team Abu Dhabi can also expect a serious challenge from Sharjah Team’s Konstantin Ustinov and Dmitry Vandyshev, as well as the Team GB duo of Scott Williams and Martin Campbell, while Kuwait’s Bader al Dousari and Abdullatif Al Omani go for a win in Raheeb17.
Torrente, the three-time F1H2O world champion, is happy to be returning to Class 3 action alongside Faleh Al Mansoori for Thursday’s opening race.
“I’m looking forward to racing in Khor Fakkan,” said Torrente. “It’s a new venue for me. I’ve never raced there before. It will be a nice course, with about three quarters of it protected, and the rest not protected, making it a nice mix.
“Faleh and I have raced so much together, and he knows what I want, and I know what he wants. He’s really done a good job over the years, growing into his role as a driver, and being confident, and comfortable, in the boat.
“His confidence is high now, and he knows that if we do our job well, it will be difficult for anyone to beat us. I love having him in the boat with me.”
On this occasion, Torrente and Mansoori will miss the second Class 3 race on Friday to allow the triple world champion to take part in official practice on Khalid Lagoon for Sunday’s Grand Prix of Sharjah, final round of this year’s F1H2O world championship.
