'This is music of escape': Yacht Rock Revue brings mellow classics for Jersey Shore summer

The Yacht Rock Revue is setting sail for the Jersey Shore.

This weekend, they hit a hotspot that singer and guitarist Nick Niespodziani described as "the yachtiest setting" — the Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park , little more than a stone's throw away from the beach.

Listeners could most likely identify the silky smooth sounds of yacht rock with ease — think adult contemporary classics like Boz Scaggs' "Lido Shuffle," Hall and Oates' "Rich Girl" or Jackson Browne's "Somebody's Baby," all tunes that happen to be featured on the Yacht Rock Revue's 2019 "Live in Boston" LP.

But if you need a refresher, Niespodziani is here to elaborate.

“The strict definition of Yacht Rock would be West Coast soft rock music produced by elite studio musicians between the years of 1976 and 1984," he explained. "That’s probably the most strict definition."

But the Yacht Rock Revue, he explained, isn't terribly strict when it comes to building setlists.

"In terms of what we do, we feel like yacht rock is more of a vibe, almost more of an emotion than it is a strict genre," Niespodziani said. "Because when you’re at our concert if we decide to encore with a song by Boston that isn’t yacht rock, of course no one would claim that it is, but in the context of what you’ve seen for the last couple of hours it makes total sense."

So when Yacht Rock Revue returns to Asbury Park to headline the Stone Pony Summer Stage on Saturday, Aug. 7, fans should arrive ready to party.

"Of course, there are songs you know you’re gonna hear when you come see us play," Niespodziani said. "You’re gonna hear ‘Baker Street’ (by Gerry Rafferty), you’re gonna hear (The Doobie Brothers') ‘What a Fool Believes.’ But if we throw in a Whitney Houston song or a Bruce Springsteen song or whatever, that kind of keeps us on our toes and keeps the audience on their toes, too.”

Yacht rock has benefited from a reassessment by mainstream culture in recent years. There's a Yacht Rock Radio station on SiriusXM , while Spotify has a 165-song, nearly 12-hour official yacht rock playlist with more than a million likes. Weezer had a monster hit in 2018 with a cover of Toto's yacht rock gem "Africa," and the genre's sound and style is all over John Mayer's brand new LP "Sob Rock."

And then there's the Yacht Rock Revue, which has been playing the hits for live crowds since getting its start in Atlanta in 2007. The band even released an album of solid gold originals, "Hot Dads in Tight Jeans," last year.

Yacht rock, Niespodziani said, "has definitely entered the post-irony phase. When we started doing this, there were a lot of hipsters who would come to the shows and kind of nudge each other with their elbows and be like, ‘This is great, right?’ but they were kind of doing it to be funny. And that has, thankfully, worn off in the last few years because these are great songs."

Beyond the quality of the compositions, there's a big reason why these songs still connect with listeners in a big way.

"This is music of escape, this is music to get away from what’s going on in the real world," said Niespodziani. "That’s why it was written in the first place, and that’s why it still connects today — because the real world has gotten pretty crazy in the last few years, and this music ... has no other intent other than (to) make you feel good (and) take you away from your day-to-day worries."

Divnogorye: A BEAUTIFUL monastery built into limestone rocks (PHOTOS)

This place literally concealed itself among fields and low mountains, 650 kilometers to the south of Moscow and 150 kilometers to the south of Voronezh. Tourists often visit it in the summer, taking a detour from a high-speed track leading to the sea.

Witnessing it, any traveler immediately understands why it’s called ‘Divnogorye’, literally “divnye gory” (“miraculous mountains”). Locals just call it ‘Divy’.

Divnogorye is famous for its snow-white limestone outcrops and buttes, standing among the Central Russian green landscape. They are located on the bank of the Tikhaya Sosna River, very close to its confluence with the Don River. So, it has both a hilly terrain and a picturesque river valley.

One of the first written references of this place goes back to the end of the 14 century – a monk from the entourage of Pimen, Metropolitan of Moscow, wrote down that he had seen white stone pillars that “divno” (“marvelously, miraculously”) and “krasno” (“beautifully”) stood on the bank of the Tikhaya Sosna River.

The monastery settled among this beauty of nature. A local legend says that, back in the 12 century, hieromonks and pilgrims Xenophon and Joasaph from Sicily came looking for a refuge in the Russian lands and they arrived there, bringing the miraculous Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God with them. Allegedly, during their lifetime, the first cave church appeared inside of a limestone rock formation.

It’s known for certain that the monastery here was founded in 1653. It suffered many raids by Crimean Tatars, since it stands right on the way from Rus’ to the Crimean Khanate. Because of this, the monastery was even protected by a wooden wall, which didn’t survive to the present day.

In the same 17th century, the first cave church, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, was carved into a limestone rock outcrop.

From the times of Peter the Great, many people who traveled south to the Sea of Azov stayed there for the night. Those white pyramid stones left an incredible impression on all those travelers. 

In 1699, the monastery was visited by Peter the Great himself and he even had a fish lunch there, caught by the monks in the nearby river. Under Catherine the Great, the monastery lost its lands and means of subsistence and was closed down.

It was only reopened in the 19th century. It became quite a flourishing spiritual center of the Russian South. Legend says that, during a cholera epidemic, the miraculous Sicilian Icon of the Mother of God was found not far away from the monastery (it seems that this is how the legend of the Sicilian monks emerged). The altar of the second cave church was then consecrated in its honor.

The monks carved out not just a church in limestone rocks, but also a whole cave world – halls, corridors, staircases, monastic cells, even a second floor with a dining hall.

However, the Divnogorye monastery also has a “regular” cathedral called the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

During Soviet times, the cave churches fell into desolation and, only in the 1990s, were they restored again. Today, services are conducted there in summertime.
