This Resort Has the First Overwater Bungalows in the British Virgin Islands

The overwater bungalow life, without a flight to the Maldives.

bitter end yacht club tortola

Bitter End Yacht Club , a nautical-themed resort in the British Virgin Islands, reopened in 2021 after complete destruction by Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Following a four-year closure and ground-up rebuild, the newly reimagined Bitter End Yacht Club will welcome guests back to the 64-acre island outpost located on Virgin Gorda. What's more, the property is now outfitted with all-new Marina Lofts, which will be the only overwater bungalows in the British Virgin Islands.

Originally founded in 1969, the family-friendly resort is only accessible by boat which has made it a popular attraction for sailors and yacht enthusiasts for more than 50 years. The sprawling seaside resort is named after its secluded location at the intersection of the Caribbean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean, otherwise known as the "end of the line."

"The village is an incarnation of Bitter End's roots as a yachting destination and sailor's hangout. Its beach, seawall, and plaza are dotted with seating areas designed for settling down with a cold drink and conversation, a favorite book, or simply taking in the beautiful expanse of North Sound," said owner Lauren Hokin.

Guests can check in at the main plaza, known as the Quarterdeck Marina, which is a two-story, open-air venue with an ocean-facing lounge upstairs and a wraparound terrace. The newly renovated waterfront plaza also includes the Clubhouse restaurant, water sports center, and Reeftique Boutique. Sailors will also find 70 mooring balls and 25 marina slips available for yacht charters and non-hotel guests looking to dock their boat and rest their sea legs at The Bitter End Village.

Two of the Marina Lofts are complete and available for guest bookings with up to 10 more bungalows scheduled for build in the near future. Inspired by vintage sail lofts, the timber bungalows feature a daybed on the first-floor lounge and second-floor master suite with a king-sized bed and bath amenities. The indoor-outdoor space offers a private terrace on both floors with panoramic views of North Sound as well as a hammock for lazy days in the sun.

Bitter End Yacht Club offers five dining options to choose from, including a casual pizza-and-wine concept at the Clubhouse Restaurant and a sunken vessel salvaged from Hurricane Irma that's become a one-of-a-kind beach bar. There is a small garden on property, Bitter End Farms, that will supply fruits, vegetables, and herbs for the restaurants in addition to partnering with local fisherman and farmers to highlight Caribbean flavors.

For grab-and-go prepared food, fresh-caught seafood, and snacks, the Bitter End Market will have local provisions in stock for long voyages at sea, including the chef's world-famous key lime pie. Water sports enthusiasts will also appreciate the new fleet of water toys which include stand-up paddleboards, kiteboards, and sailboats paired with group and private instruction for anyone looking to improve their skills on the water.

With its gentle trade winds, cobalt blue waters, and near-perfect weather year-round, the British Virgin Islands have had a long-standing reputation for being a sailor's paradise. The return of Bitter End Yacht Club and its "built by sailors for sailors" legacy is an exciting development for yachters looking to spend a day ashore and travelers keen on the overwater bungalow life without the long-haul flight.

Bitter End Yacht Club

North Sound, Virgin Gorda

  • Full Review
  • On several gorgeous, white-sand beaches with plenty of water sports
  • All rooms have balconies where guests can enjoy the breezes and stunning views
  • Spa, fitness center, and pool
  • Restaurants are reasonably priced with solid (if not gourmet) meals
  • Outdoor movie theater plays two movies every night (the first always has a G rating)
  • Small kids' club
  • Free snacks and drinks in the rooms
  • Strong Wi-Fi connection at the clubhouse and the bar
  • Some rooms are in need of renovations
  • Pool is small
  • Can be a steep walk to some rooms
  • Not all rooms have air-conditioning (although with the excellent breezes, few guests use it)

Bottom Line

This property was tragically impacted by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is currently closed for repairs. Bitter End hopes to reopen in late 2018. The Bitter End Yacht Club, snuggled into a steep hill on the scenic North Sound, is a relaxed, family-friendly resort. The tech-free rooms (no TVs or Wi-Fi here) feature stunning views from the balconies, and the sliding doors allows breezes to sweep through; some rooms do not have air-conditioning but most guests find they don't miss it. While some rooms feel up-to-date (with bright comforters, sleek bathrooms, and comfy lounge chairs), others have dated furniture and are in need of renovations. The white-sand beaches at the hotel are narrow, but they are still the highlight here, offering plenty of water sports and relatively calm waters. The pool, however, is a disappointment: It is small and thus relatively unused. Families will likely enjoy the calm waters, the small kids' club, and the outdoor movie theater, while couples can enjoy the gorgeous views and the solid restaurant options.

Oyster Hotel Review

On a small white-sand beach on virgin gorda.

The Bitter End Yacht Club is tucked into the North Sound of Virgin Gorda, the British Virgin Islands' second largest island. Although Virgin Gorda does have a small airport (mostly used by chartered planes), the hotel is only accessible by boat.

Most guests fly into Beef Island Airport (adjacent to Tortola) and take the North Sound Express ferry straight to BEYC, which takes about 45 minutes. Those who fly into the Virgin Gorda Airport can take a short taxi ride (about $30 including tip) from Spanish Town (a tiny town with a grocery store and a restaurant) to Gun Creek jetty, from which the boat ride only takes about 15 minutes.

From the Bitter End, guests can nearly see mogul Richard Branson's private island, Necker Island, which is about a 15-minute boat ride away. The beaches at the hotel are small, but offer beautiful views of the surrounding archipelago, and the waters are host to the third largest Caribbean mega-yacht party, which takes place during the holidays every year.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. Broker has no special knowledge regarding the Charter Provider’s or Charter Supplier’s financial condition, unsafe conditions, health hazards, weather hazards, or climate extremes at locations to which you may travel during or otherwise in connection with your Charter.

  • Limitation on Liability . In no event shall Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and/or their respective affiliates, or any employees, agents, officers, directors, members or managers of any of the foregoing (“Broker and Charter Releasees”), be liable for any direct, indirect, punitive, incidental, special or consequential damages arising out of, or in any way connected with, your access to, display of or use the Broker’s website, the Charter or services provided to you in connection with the Charter (including, but not limited to, your reliance upon opinions of the Broker), whether based on a theory of negligence, contract, tort, strict liability, consumer protection statutes, or otherwise, and even if Broker and/or any other of the Broker and Charter Releasees have been advised of the possibility of such damages.

BVI Holidays

Virgin Gorda, BVI

The Bitter End is back! In 2017 Bitter End Yacht Club on Virgin Gorda was destroyed by Hurricane Irma. It has taken some time, but now BVI Holidays is pleased and proud to introduce you to Bitter End II. There are some changes of course as the owners have taken the opportunity to upgrade and improve the hotel but still retaining the charm and uniqueness that always has been and can only be, Bitter End.

Bitter End is situated at the most north-eastern tip of Virgin Gorda, on 75 acres of land. The resort looks out onto a mile long white sand beach and its stunning location in the North Sound makes it a popular destination for yachting enthusiasts. Virgin Gorda is the British Virgin Island’s second most populated island, and whilst there is much to see and do here, the resort itself feels secluded and relaxed.

Bitter End II is a water sports enthusiast’s paradise. This is due to Bitter End’s protected, deep-water harbour, steady trade winds and proximity to vivid coral reefs. Bitter End has always offered the best selection of water sports anywhere in the Caribbean and possibly, worldwide. Bitter End II is constantly expanding their water sports programme which is rivalled by none.

The legendary Bitter End II Club Fleet will continue to expand with new watersports programmes, including kiting, wing foiling, and windsurfing in the place many says boasts the best conditions globally.

The white sand beach at Bitter End is approximately a mile long and great for relaxing and swimming.

The Clubhouse at Bitter End II is back!

The Clubhouse at Bitter End was built in 1969 as a spot for yachtsmen and women to stop off for a quick drink and a hearty meal. Bitter End Yacht Club brings overwater bungalows to BVI

bitter end yacht club tortola

The Bitter End Yacht Club in Virgin Gorda is set to reopen later this month with the first and only overwater bungalows available in the BVI.

The 64-acre private retreat was opened by the Hokin family in 1973 and quickly became a popular destination for visitors to Virgin Gorda. However, when Hurricane Irma devastated the Virgin Islands back in 2017, the resort was not spared. Since then, it has been closed for nearly four years. During its closure, the owners treated the property to a makeover and they refer to it as Bitter End 2.0.

The property has been outfitted with new Marina Lofts projecting over the ocean. The handmade timber bungalows were said to be inspired by the vintage sail lofts where sails used to be made. The handmade timber bungalows are set across two levels and are said to be made for guests to enjoy a moment of relaxation whilst on vacation.

The first-floor houses a large and spacious lounge and bathroom, while the second floor is home to a master suite with a king-sized bed. Each bungalow also has a private terrace on both floors that offers a view of the Caribbean Sea.

There are currently only two bungalows complete and available for bookings in December, but 10 more bungalows are scheduled to be ready in the near future.

In addition to the luxe accommodation, there’s a new waterfront plaza overlooking the North Sound. It will offer several distinct dining options, including a new twist on the clubhouse and a waterfront bar, as well as a water sports centre with a new fleet of water toys and a boutique for holiday shopping.

“We have taken everything that we’ve learned over five decades and incorporated it into the redesign to purposefully pay homage to our history,” Richard Hokin, the head of the Hokin family and co-owner of the resort said in a statement.

“At the same time, we are elevating Bitter End’s amenities and hospitality offerings to create a world-class experience that will delight travellers for generations to come,” he added.

The resort will also cater to the Virgin Islands charter and private yachting industries and it will feature more than 70 mooring balls and 25 marina slips. Sailors visiting the resort can purchase a mooring or dock space and sleep onboard their vessel. There will also be a new marina that comes complete with an open-air lounge and wraparound terrace.

The resort owner said Bitter End is focused on maintaining the legacy, the history and the overall vibe of Bitter End which is laid back, communal and aligned with the environment. He said the overall experience will be centred on entertainment in and around the water.

“We know this is what our clients and guests from all over the world expect. So, we’ve reimagined everything with that in mind. That said, we’re upgrading everything. All our buildings will be brand new while incorporating our 50-year history into our design, making your stay and experience at Bitter End unique. While a lot has changed, we still are unmistakably Bitter End,” Hokin said.

They are very nice but if it was a local his plans would’ve never been approved…….Its very sad to see that only outsiders get what they want in this country….Fat hog’s bob had applied for something similar for his restaurant {over water dining} and it was never approved.

I know locals with waterfront acreage whose applications for seabed leasing is ignored and/or ” lost “.

Wait see. Maya cove prime for that

Fat Hog Bob Application was approved as applied. The evidence is there check it out

This is how to ” build up”,Yes. Low income housing for the imported poor,NO.

Seems risky to build bungalows over shallow water when there is plenty of dry land above the shoreline to build sturdy hurricane resistant structures. Hope these bungalows are built far enough offshore from the beach so they don’t hinder beach access and enjoyment for guests and residents.

Guess we can all stay for free if they are on the beach as all beaches are public spaces!

I am happy the Bryce can do something to create jobs in the country but locals have tried to import prefab housing and town and country have given them he’ll and some was disapproved. What is the difference? Is it the skin colour or what the government min9sters can get in return.

It’s a great thing that The Bitter send is finally able to open back up. Stop whining.

They are amazing! Our guests have been raving about how beautiful Bitter end has become. Truly has become a MUST-see stop on a 7 night BVI itinerary. ucyachtcharters.com

Easy Cruising in the British Virgin Islands

  • By Kim Kavin
  • August 7, 2023

The Baths National Park

Starting in June, American Airlines is offering daily nonstop flights from Miami to Tortola in the British Virgin Islands —reportedly the first time since the 1980s that visitors will have an everyday option without a connecting flight via Puerto Rico or St. Thomas.

The BVI is one of the world’s top cruising destinations. Multiple companies have bareboat bases there, and iconic spots such as the Bitter End Yacht Club and Foxy’s have been luring yachtsmen for decades.

The airline says the nonstop flights will be available through August 14, and then will restart in November, ahead of the winter cruising season. Planes will depart Miami at 10:07 a.m. and arrive in the BVI at 1:06 p.m. Return flights will take off at 1:47 p.m. and land back in the United States at 4:25 p.m.

“We have one of the most beautiful collections of isles and cays anywhere in the world, and look forward to offering our new and returning visitors an assortment of experiences in the Sailing Capital of the World,” said Clive McCoy, director of tourism for the British Virgin Islands Tourist Board & Film Commission.

Even for boaters who have cruised in the BVI before, there’s plenty to see and do. The Bitter End Yacht Club, which has been rebuilding after hurricane damage on Virgin Gorda, is celebrating its 50th anniversary. There’s also a new Dream Caribbean Blue bareboat base at Scrub Island Resort, Spa & Marina, with 14 sailing catamarans out of Tortola.

And, of course, there are longtime favorites like The Baths. Beautiful scenery simply never goes out of style.

He’s The Man

Philicianno “Foxy” Callwood set up a bar on Jost Van Dyke in 1968. He thought sailors in the British Virgin Islands might want to stop in for a drink. Today, his bar is a destination unto itself.

Granite boulders at The Baths National Park on Virgin Gorda can be as big as 40 feet wide. Visitors can make their way around this protected piece of natural beauty by using steps and rope handrails to stay steady along the trail. Moorings and a dinghy dock are in place for cruising boats to use, and there are marked channels for swimming. Bring a snorkel for exploring the caverns, grottoes and waters off the beach.

The Last Island Outpost: There’s Nothing Unpleasant about Bitter End Yacht Club

bitter end yacht club tortola

In the heart of the world-famous North Sound, located just 12 miles off the eastern coast of Tortola, Bitter End Yacht Club is the last island outpost before hitting the open waters of the Atlantic Ocean.

Situated on the northeast extremity of picturesque Virgin Gorda, sailors and yachtsmen from all over the world make landfall for a meal, celebrate a special occasion, or simply to rest their sea legs for a few days, as the next stop is the western coast of Africa. Cooling trade winds, warm water temperatures and more than 300 days of sunshine per year make this is a haven for seafarers and landlubbers alike.

A part of the British Virgin Islands, this area is considered to be a prime resort and yachting location, and is a magnet for mega-yachts, celebrities and high-net-worth individuals who come to enjoy the protected waters, anchorages and water sports. Less than a mile from Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, Bitter End Yacht Club offers near-perfect year-round sailing conditions and presents a wide array of amenities, day trips, a palm-shaded pool and Caribbean hospitality that is sure to satisfy anyone who is seeking a vacation in paradise.

In the summer of 1964, the Hokin family, owners of a Chicago steel company, happened upon Virgin Gorda on a fishing expedition and purchased the land for a family retreat. Three generations later, they have transformed what was simply a small pub with five cottages into a world-class resort comprised of 86 rooms, open air dining through three distinct venues, a 25-slip marina and one of the best-known water sports centers in the Caribbean.

Boasting top-of-the-line sailboats, skiffs, windsurfers and other equipment, along with roomy excursion boats for exciting day trips, this is a true playground for the elite. However, the beauty here is that Bitter End Yacht Club has an extremely casual quality, a true barefoot elegance. Visitors are not busy trying to impress one another (and these are sports enthusiasts) – they’re just families who want to enjoy the outdoors and a pristine slice of the Caribbean without any airs.

The true luxury of the North Sound is that you are only as isolated as you want to be. If you look out into that body of water, the world unfolds before your eyes. You are a hop, skip and a jump from the islands of Prickly Pear, Saba Rock, Mosquito and Eustatia. Additionally, there are friends wandering about their boats like a quaint village for the privileged.

During my stay, Rising Sun was anchored about a mile off the coast. Owned by David Geffen, this is the eighth largest private water vessel in the world, measuring an astounding 453 feet. Yachts from all over the planet come here because it is the most protected, non-commercial, deep water harbor in the Caribbean. You’ll find no commercial traffic here, just pleasure boats for recreation. Probably the most spectacular body of water in which to perfect your high-performance sailing skills, it’s an ideal location to learn to snorkel or dive, or any of a wide variety of other water sports, because it is so well protected – there is no open sea. This is what makes the area so extraordinary; it’s an incredibly beautiful lagoon-like body of water, surrounded by gorgeous reefs and islands.

Architect Peter Brill, who gave up the world of city skyscrapers for the more relaxed life of sailing the Caribbean, was secured to design Bitter End’s breezy buildings and cottages. Nestled into a wandering hillside of bougainvillea, hibiscus, and oleander rising high above a white-sand beach, these buildings are one-with-nature and have an elevated treehouse effect.

The design of the rooms, while extraordinarily comfortable, is not overstated and maintains a sense of connectedness to the land. The entire resort is intended to be inviting and lively, while retaining the natural beauty of the island. An environmentally friendly property, Bitter End generates its own electricity, collects and distills its own water, utilizes solar power and uses treated waste shower water to irrigate the hillside gardens.

One of many sailing races that feature Virgin Gorda is the International Maxi Race. Starting in Tenerife, off the coast of Spain, it ends right at Virgin Gorda’s North Sound. And of course, it’s Bitter End Yacht Club where crew members gather to celebrate and socialize.

For those who are amateurs, once a year, the top racing sailors in the world come to Bitter End to participate in the only major pro-am yacht regatta that pairs world-class skippers with anyone with a sense of adventure who wants to participate. Any guest staying at the resort during this regatta is welcome to request a position on a boat, and novices, as well as experts, are accommodated.

If fishing is your passion, this area not only boasts world-class bonefishing, but is just 15 miles from the North Drop. Known for the best blue marlin fishing on the planet, the North Drop is a precipitous plummet where the floor of the Atlantic Ocean suddenly plunges into a jet-black abyss – one teeming with marine life, including the mammoth blue marlin.

As a Bitter End Yacht Club guest, you will be angling in style on Hot Fish’s custom-designed 45-foot boat, War Horse, which has a custom-made “cigarette racing” Kevlar carbon fiber composite hull, endowed with triple diesels boasting more than 1,000 horsepower. Air-conditioned and equipped with top fishing gear and captain’s seats, this boat can do 60 miles per hour, leaving more time for fishing and less for travel.

All of this activity is sure to stir up quite an appetite, and with three restaurants and a bakery, you will never be hungering for the mainland. The Clubhouse menu features generous buffets and table service for breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as cocktail service on the terrace all day and evening. Homemade soups, fresh salads, pasta, freshly caught fish and lobster, as well as poultry and steaks will keep you satisfied and energized. A generous selection of homemade desserts is always offered from Winston’s Bakery, boasting a reputation for exquisite breads, pastries and luscious desserts. Located on the property, Winston’s is a must-have for many a yachtsman to stock his galley.

If it’s straight-up relaxation you’re after, Bitter End offers guests an unparalleled spa experience. Selected as one of the “World’s Best” by Condé Nast Traveler, exotic aromatherapy massages and private yoga sessions on the beach await. Add to that manicures, pedicures, facials and herbal wraps and satisfaction is guaranteed. Be it simply for unwinding, or to refresh after a day on the water, you are in good hands.

At only about 8 square miles, Virgin Gorda is still rather small; yet it is the third-largest and second most populous of the British Virgin Islands. Christopher Columbus is said to have named the island “The Fat Virgin” because the island’s profile on the horizon reminded him of a fat woman lying on her side. Indeed!

Tortola’s Beef Island Airport (EIS) is well equipped for private travel and connecting with the North Sound Express (NSX) high-speed ferry for a 30-minute scenic trip direct to the resort is a necessary requirement, as Bitter End is only accessible by water – a detail that surely adds to the inherent sense of privacy.

Word of mouth has given Bitter End Yacht Club a worldwide reputation and a loyal guest base of families, friends and couples who enjoy water sports and relaxation as a way of life. At any given time, approximately 55 percent of the guests on-site are return visitors. The unparalleled hospitality found there is most certainly at the core of what keeps patrons coming back time and again.

Akin to returning home, this slice of heaven is certain to make even the most haggard traveler feel welcome and extraordinarily comfortable, and the casual elegance that characterizes this island outpost explains why Bitter End is regularly hailed as one of the top full-service resorts in the world.

Sailing from Tortola to Bitter End Yacht Club, Day 4/10

Northeast winds meant we could sail close-hauled all the way up the gangway to Virgin Gorda’s Mountain Point. There were only a few other boats out this morning because we got an early start. (I had set my alarm for 6:20am, but was awake earlier.) We decided to put off breakfast until we arrived. It was a very exciting sail, we were frequently doing over 7 knots and occasionally putting the rail under.

I have to admit, I was a little envious of the catamarans we saw out there, that weren’t heeled over with their crews hanging on for safety’s sake. It was good though, I think I can talk my wife into the ASA Catamaran course now. I’m going to ask at Conch whether the course is necessary though. It seems like sailing a 40′ catamaran really wouldn’t be that different from a monohull. Maybe there’s something I’m missing.

My wife slept must of the way up the gangway, with one arm threaded around the bimini frame to keep from sliding off the cockpit bench. She wanted to go sleep down below, however that would leave me single-handing, and if I were to fall off no one would be able to rescue me, and no one would wake her up before running full steam into Virgin Gorda.

Once we reached Mountain Point, I decided to drop sails and motor up to Mosquito Rock. I needed a few minutes to duck below and check the charts for the North Sound Passage past Colquohoon Reef, and I couldn’t do that safely under full sails.

Mosquito Island is actually Moskito Island, named for the Indians of the same name. On that note, we really haven’t seen any bug problems down here, which is very nice. We do see bugs ashore, but only rarely, and they are usually bees or otherwise predisposed with the flowers.

The wind is slight this close to the island, so we’re running the fans for the first time this trip. Most of the time the temperature is perfect. When the temperature hits mid 80’s in the afternoon, we just open the hatches to let the breeze blow through. Most of the hatches open forward, and the boats swings bow-to-wind on anchor. The hatches then scoop a fair amount of breeze through the boat all night long. I’m ready to go snorkeling in Eustacia Sound, but I think it will be a while before Noel’s sunburn is up to that!

A few years ago I wondered why anyone would want to sail across an ocean. Then about a year ago I thought I could understand that desire. Now, after three days of constant sailing, I realize that the only way I could pull that off would be on something bigger and more stable than a 36 footer. Its an easy size to sail, but if I were to spend days heeled over through the trades, I’d sure like a bigger boat or a catamaran.

The last two times I went to drop the main, I had to go up to the mast and pull her down the last 15 feet by hand. There is no downhaul for the main, so I am going to see if the onboard toolkit has some dry lubricant I can spray on the sail slugs before I forget.

With a forest of masts out in the mooring fields around Saba Rock and Bitter End yacht Club, the view is really magical with all the mast lights lighting the sky like stars. Looking across to Bitter End Yacht Club, we could see the lighted palm trees and hear a band playing at the restaurant along the shore. I’d like to spend more time here, maybe two full days next time.

Because of the sunburn we didn’t get to go snorkeling in Eustacia Sound, around the corner from Saba Rock. There is a place there where old pirate canons are encrusted in the reef in about 10 feet of water. I’d really like to see those.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to Hurricane Irma in 2017, Bitter End Yacht Club is currently closed until further notice, undergoing reconstruction.

Dating back to the late 1960’s this exclusive spot is not only a top end resort worthy of consideration for a potential accommodation splurge, but it also plays host to a range of fabulous watersport activities, the biggest Spa of the BVI and noteworthy Caribbean dining facilities. With some of the world's most successful entrepreneurs living on private islands just a stone's throw away, don't be surprised if you rub shoulders with the rich and famous. You won't find scores of tourists here, just sit back and relax in the friendly but upmarket atmosphere. Unfortunately, Hurricane Irma left the Bitter End Yacht Club devastated in September 2017, however, the Bitter End community is working hard to restore the 64 acres area on Virgin Gorda. The main focus, for now, is on supporting Bitter End’s employees who have been affected the most by the storm and of course to have their shorefront operations back in full swing as soon as possible.
