The most eye-catching changes are a 36-foot glass-paneled swimming pool on the main deck aft and a 968-square-foot air-conditioned gym on the bridge deck. That space used six tons of folding glass doors to create a winter garden. It’s complemented by a large cinema screen.
Perhaps the most significant change, though, is the yacht’s conversion from private to commercial use to allow Carinthia VII to enter the charter market. “The deal was made for the boat to come to our facility on a handshake, and then we only had a couple of days to prepare between the handshake and Carinthia VII sailing up to Hamburg,” Thomas Krischkowski, head of refit and repair at Lürssen, told Robb Report .
The list of technical upgrades completed by Lürssen includes a new waterpower treatment, a full sprinkler system, 18.6 miles of cable for a new AV/IT system, new exhaust filters and fully overhauled engines and zero speed stabilizers. The yacht also had to meet new SOLAS stability requirements to be a charter vessel.
In 2002, when the Austrian billionaire Heidi Horten commissioned Project Faberge, as Carinthia VII was originally known, expectations ran high. The yacht paid homage to the fleet of Carinthia s owned and built by her late husband Helmut Horten, three of which were designed by Jon Bannenberg.
As one of only a handful of women to commission one of the largest yachts in the world, Horten called upon one of Bannenberg’s protégés, a young Tim Heywood, to pen the design.
Horten had become an overnight sensation in the art world six years before commissioning the superyacht, after she spent $22 million in a single Sotheby’s auction. Renowned for her keen eye, she ensured Carinthia VII reflected a similar level of artisanal craftsmanship.
The original curved laminated teak planking, forward of the owner’s deck and bridge deck, is described by Fraser broker Antoine X. Larricq, who managed the sale, as “haute-couture detailing.”
Other original features include the thick exterior teak decks and cross-hatched parquet floors, which remain in fantastic condition, largely because Horten only used the yacht for her annual summer cruise.
The new owner, also a keen art collector, had two strict requests for the refit: to seamlessly marry the old with the new, and for the shipyard to complete the work within 300 days, so he could enjoy the winter cruising season. He enlisted Italian studio Bizzozero Cassina Architects to oversee the design.
The studio only had two yacht projects before this. But it had completed residential projects for the owner that brought a similar look to Carinthia VII’s 8,800-square-foot interior, including redoing all eight guest cabins.
The walls are covered in fabrics by Venetian artisans, and the central staircase is decorated with handmade, laser-cut tiles in an ombré-patterned blue that transitions from deep-ocean blue on the lower deck to pale-sky blue on the bridge deck. On each floor, the artwork in the lobby matches the color of the staircase, and classic gold elements have been replaced with a more contemporary silver.
A full exterior paint job updated the hull to Majestic Blue, with the superstructure in Matterhorn White and the external deck walls painted in Shark Grey. Following a few minor tweaks at the shipyard, Carinthia VII will soon cross the Atlantic to make its charter debut in the Caribbean.

MONACO YACHT SHOW 2023
Iconic Lürssen yachts at MYS 2023
Two of the most iconic lürssen yachts are primed and ready to make a splash on the market at the monaco yacht show 2023….
With the first lists coming from the 2023 Monaco Yacht Show, one legend stands out. Lürssen and Fraser are set to unveil the extensively refitted 97m Carinthia VII . This refit was completed at Lürssen's Hamburg facilities, and the superyacht now features redesigned exterior decks with new lounge and living areas, a 12m/39' pool, and a fitness room.
“I am very proud that after building Carinthia VII, " says Peter Lürssen, Managing Partner of Lürssen. "We have now been able to participate in its new lease on life with an extensive refit. Carinthia VII remains a testament to the solidity of our German engineering and manufacture.”
Built in 2002, Carinthia VII was one part of a new generation of 90m+ superyachts that hit the water in the late 90s and early 2000s, largely pioneered by the German yards. The vessel's original exterior lines, from designer Tim Heywood , proved influential in the yachting industry. Heywood has shared that “several yachts were consequently designed and built that owe their DNA to Carinthia VII .”
Carinthia VII will be introduced to the charter market for the first time, represented exclusively by Fraser. Daniela de Marco, Fraser's Head of Charter Management in Europe, notes, “Bringing any yacht to the charter market for the first time is always a joy and a challenge. And one that we relish. It’s like starting with a blank sheet of paper - creating a fresh new program built on experience with the very best charter captains and crew, the latest tenders and toys and of course, creating some personalised and exciting new itineraries with clients."
Mark Duncan, Fraser's Director of Business Development & Marketing, anticipates that Carinthia VII will be a key part of post-charter conversations due to its unique features and ambience. "We suspect Carinthia VII is going to be as much a part of those after-charter dinner conversations as the unforgettable moments we know it is going to help create for those who decide to book something exceptional.”
With the combined influences of Lürssen and Fraser, Carinthia VII is set to make an impressive entrance into the charter market. It is early days in the run-up to The Monaco Yacht Show, with many more intriguing yachts set to make their way to Port Hercule. Having the chance to see the evolution of this iconic motor yacht up close is an early draw card as the industry looks ahead to the most important show of the year.
The impressive 91m Lady Lara, will also be at the show and listed on the market for the first time since its delivery by Max Bulley and Gary Wright from Y.CO and Merle Wood & Associates . The superyacht, originally delivered in 2015, has also recently completed an extensive refit earlier this year.
Lady Lara boasts an interior and exterior design skillfully executed by Reymond Langton Design, while its naval architecture was crafted by the German shipbuilder. Lady Lara offers accommodation for up to 16 guests in eight staterooms, with a dedicated crew of up to 27.
The yacht also boasts a spacious owner's deck complete with a private lounge area and a bar. To enhance the sense of privacy onboard, the owner's suite opens onto a private terrace, featuring a jacuzzi. It also includes a glass lift and offers a cinema, a wellness area, and two swimming pools, with a main deck pool that can transform into a dancefloor.
The iconic motor yacht is powered by twin MTU engines, allowing for a cruising speed of 12 knots.
Prospective buyers will be able to find Lady Lara at Berth D02, QUAI RAINIER III during the show.

(ex Carinthia VI)
When the 71 metre motor yacht The One was launched in 1973, she was one of the most admired yachts of that decade, strongly influencing subsequent yacht designs. Her development was also the first design project of these large dimensions for Jon Bannenberg – often dubbed the godfather of modern yacht design – who developed many of the well-known yachts in operation today. One of the yacht’s outstanding characteristics was the combination of speed, style and luxury in a way that had never existed before. She reached 28 knots, – amazing for a displacement of 650 tons. And to this day, she has not lost any of her striking visual appeal in the slightest.

M/Y The One Rises from the Ashes
By Catriona Cherrie
Legendary superyacht The One, formerly named Carinthia VI and designed by the celebrated Jon Bannenberg in the ‘70s, has been sold for 1.11 million pounds sterling. The in-house sale of the 73m motoryacht, which suffered serious damage, was completed by experienced yacht sellers Altinel Yachts Worldwide Yacht Brokerage.
The vessel was built by Lürssen Yachts in 1973 for experienced owners Helmut and Heidi Horten, the couple behind the fleet of Carinthia yachts. However, in 2016 the yacht was largely destroyed by a disastrous fire while in Marmaris Marina, Turkey. The sale will see the yacht rebuilt in Turkey and will be delivered in summer 2020.
The One was based on M/Y Carinthia V — a yacht considered to be one of the most iconic in its category — for it was one of the earlier yachts created by Jon Bannenberg. It also proved to be a turning point for the Bremen-based yacht builder, which until the building of Carinthia VI had only built warships. Lürssen’s first powerful and fast yacht for the supermarket magnate Horten had obvious warship-like qualities, such as her long and slim design that lacked distracting features.
Unfortunately, on her maiden voyage in the Mediterranean, she hit an uncharted rock and sank. Rather than raising and rebuilding, Lürssen replicated her but with extra watertight bulkheads to prevent a reoccurring event and named her Carinthia VI .
Sadly that was not the end of bad luck for the vessel, as Carinthia VI was sold to Italian real estate developer Francesco Bellavista Caltagirone, who renamed her M/Y The One, and she caught fire in the middle of the night in January 2016 in Marmaris in Turkey. The blaze also caught onto M/Y Barbie and destroyed both yachts, thankfully not irreparably.
Before her refit, The One offered accommodation for up to 12 guests across five suites and achieved a cruising speed of 22 knots and a top speed of 28 knots from her 3,460kW MTU 20V538TB93 engines.

Carinthia VII, named after Austria's Carinthia region, was built at the Lurssen yard in 2002 and had a major refit in 2005. Powered by four MTU 1163 Diesels, she can reach a maximum speed of 26 knots with a cruising speed of 22 knots. Known for her luxurious design by Tim Heywood, Carinthia VII accommodates 12 guests and 25 crew members.
The enduring appeal of CARINTHIA VII rests in Tim Heywood's masterly design and layout, the enduring quality of her Lürssen pedigree and her exceptional performance package. At over 3,600 gross tons, spanning 6 decks with a 16m I 54' beam, CARINTHIA VII's interior volume and exterior deck spaces are outstanding.
