On board sailing yacht MyStar with owners Maya and Liran Talit
He always dreamed of sailing away. She wasn’t a sailor but longed for her children to see the world. Thanks to the 35-metre MyStar , they both got what they wanted, learns Risa Merl.
“I had a desire for my kids to be inspired by the world and not just be stuck within four walls for their education,” says Maya Talit. “Today the world is changing at such a fast pace, so we wanted them to see the beauty now.” Meanwhile, her husband, Liran, was passionate about sailing. Together they forged a plan to take their four daughters on a far-flung sailing voyage that brought both of their dreams to fruition.
Over the course of nearly four years, the family traipsed halfway around the world on their 35.1-metre Alloy Yachts MyStar , from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean, the US to the Galápagos, across the South Pacific and finally back across the Pacific and up to Alaska.
MyStar is not only the first superyacht the couple has owned, but their first boat, full stop. Neither comes from a family of sailors. Growing up, Maya’s family hit the slopes instead of taking to the seas, although she notes that despite that fact, her sister somehow became a professional sailor. “We were busy running a global business and travelling for work, so the time never felt right before to buy a boat,” Maya says. Instead, they joined friends for boating holidays, mainly on motor yachts, but in his heart, Liran had a soft spot for sailing yachts.
Maya admits that in the beginning she was sceptical about the idea of travelling the world by boat. “It was Liran’s passion to be on the water – he got his skipper’s licence when he was young and he would go sailing with friends at every opportunity,” she says. “I didn’t have any interest and I wasn’t sure if I would like being on the water, but, as I discovered, the benefits are endless because you are on your own little island. You are in the middle of nature, it’s beautiful and private, and you have all your belongings with you. And you go to places you would not be able to get to any other way [than by water]. It’s priceless.”
The couple splits their time between Israel, London and Athens (where the yacht is currently based), but they’ve also lived in Hong Kong and New York. Liran grew up in Israel, the son of an Israeli media mogul, and Maya hails from Canada. The two met while she attended university in Tel Aviv as part of an entrepreneurship programme. Soon after getting married, they became partners in business as well, starting a successful television channel aimed at providing educational shows for babies and toddlers. Aptly named BabyTV, the channel provided 24/7, advertisement-free programming for kids up to age four. At the time of its inception, in the early 2000s, there was nothing like it. “We wanted to make high-quality content that would introduce colours, shapes and nursery rhymes.”
They moved from Israel to London to set up the business, which was initially launched in the UK and Europe in 2005. The groundbreaking idea proved to be a success and was soon snapped up by News Corporation’s Fox International in a partnership deal that helped BabyTV go international, appearing on screens in 100 countries and 400 affiliate platforms in more than a dozen languages. Years later, shortly after the couple purchased MyStar in November 2017, BabyTV was sold to Disney. “ MyStar brought us good luck,” says Maya of the boat. “Liran was doing the deals to finalise the sale right after we started out on our trip.” He bought the boat for Maya’s 40th birthday present, telling her he wanted to sail off with her into the sunset.
At first, they had debated between power and sail. They liked the luxury of a motor yacht but the far-reaching range of a sailing boat – and then broker Roy Klajman of the Sea-Alliance Group helped them define the characteristics of a yacht capable of doing such a worldwide journey. MyStar was the perfect match. “When we found MyStar , she was a combination of both. As soon as we saw her for the first time in Saint-Tropez, we fell in love instantly,” says Maya. “You walk in and it’s all light with 360-degree panoramic views from the wraparound saloon windows. You have a view of everything in front of you and it draws you in.”
Launched in 1994, MyStar was built by Alloy Yachts to an Ed Dubois design. She had undergone an extensive rebuild in 2015, which included a redesign of the transom. The couple have since kept her up to date and in excellent condition with regular refit work. But what really drew them to MyStar was her seaworthiness and spaciousness. A true ocean-going vessel, she draws a reassuring 3.5 metres with a fin keel. “We thought, this is a boat that could sail us anywhere – she’s strong and had a good track record for sailing while also being comfortable and elegant,” Maya says. “And the cabins were big, and we could bring the nanny.” The latter was a crucial point as at the time of setting off on their voyage their kids ranged from two-and-a-half to 14 years old.
Maya says the previous owner had spectacular taste, creating an interior that was cosy and chic, and the yacht already had single beds in the guest cabins, which were perfect for the kids. But they did take time to update the operating systems and sails. “For me to live with my four small kids on board, we did everything to make sure she was as safe as possible.” Liran was also guided by the maxim “happy crew, happy cruise”, and so they upgraded the crew areas to be as comfortable as the guest areas.
In 2019, they started their journey in the Mediterranean, spending time in Greece and Italy, then crossed over to the Caribbean for winter, calling in at Grenada, Tobago Cays, Mustique for New Year’s Eve and St Barths : “We loved St Barths and stayed for some time,” says Maya. Then, it was down through the Panama Canal and up to the US West Coast. In California, they took their daughters on a tour of the Meta headquarters, the Tesla factory to see how the cars were made and to SpaceX, where the girls got to touch the rocket that would later be launched into space.
They sailed down the Baja Peninsula and up into the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. “The Sea of Cortez has such incredible nature with whale sharks and seals, and the water is crystal blue and the mountains are red and dry,” says Maya. From there, they headed further into nature-rich lands, visiting Cocos Island and the Galápagos. “When we sailed from Cocos to the Galápagos, it was the smoothest sail and then suddenly we entered an area where there was so much life in the sea – whales, dolphins, tuna jumping, birds circling. It felt like we were in an oceanic Circle of Life ,” Maya says. It was these moments of being in tune with the natural world that Maya most appreciates about her time at sea.
In 2020, their trip paused, along with the rest of the world, when Covid-19 hit. The yacht had just arrived in French Polynesia – the family didn’t do the crossing but had just flown over to meet MyStar there. Within a matter of days, everything shut down. They spent six weeks quarantining in a rental house on land. French Polynesia closed its borders, but allowed free travel within the country to those who were already there. So after the quarantine, they were free to explore the islands. They were stranded there, but there were certainly worse places to be stranded. “We were in Bora Bora without any other tourists,” says Maya. “It was paradise – we had gorgeous al fresco dinners every night in Bora Bora for 30 days in a row.” They also visited Tahiti, Mo’orea and the Tuamotu island group, where they dived with the sharks at the Fakarava Atoll. “There’s a pass where the atoll meets the Pacific Ocean – it’s an area where a lot of sea life comes in, and we saw a wall of sharks,” she says. “My kids are all scuba divers and multi-certified.”
The last stop was Alaska, where MyStar sailed up to Glacier Bay. Moored in a bay where glaciers kiss the water’s edge, the girls all decided to jump in wearing bikinis and socks for a cold-water plunge. Alaska was also the setting for one of Maya’s favourite memories of the trip. They spotted bears on shore, catching fish from a stream that meets the sea, so they boarded the tender in the pouring rain to have a closer look. “We just sat there in the dinghy in the rain and looked on in awe. No one complained they were getting wet or wanted to go in,” says Maya.
The experience of living on board and travelling the world has given her kids a different mindset from landlubbers, says Maya. “They are very centred, confident and open-minded. They know themselves well. They feel calm being in nature, and they make friends quickly.” Perhaps the biggest influence was on their youngest daughter, who grew up on the boat from toddlerhood. “She’s so strong and optimistic and happy,” says Maya. “She loves the boat and being at sea. When other kids draw houses, she always draws a boat!”
The trip has also had a positive impact on the family unit overall. “It definitely made us closer,” says Maya. “You have to learn quickly to show up as your best self, because if not, everyone else suffers. You learn how to manage your emotions and communicate well. We have a great connection now because of that.” The family returned to shore in the summer of 2022 so their eldest daughter could have the high school experience, while the Talits look for inspiration as to what might be the next boat to pique their interest. “My husband loves the idea of building something new, but I still need to digest that,” Maya says with a smile.
Though once a reluctant sailor, Maya wouldn’t trade the experience of going to sea with her husband and kids for anything. She wholeheartedly recommends an adventure like this to other families who might be keen to throw off the bowlines. “My advice? Don’t wait!”
MyStar is currently for sale with Roy Klajman of the Sea-Alliance Group ( [email protected] ).
MAYA TALIT'S TIPS FOR HOME-SCHOOLING AT SEA
CHOOSE THE RIGHT PROGRAMME “We opted for Laurel Springs. The school is fully accredited, offering Advanced Placement classes and even a model UN club, and graduates have gone on to Yale, Harvard and Princeton universities. It was also user-friendly for the girls to do self-study.”
HAVE ACCESS TO TUTORS “It’s always helpful to have some extra support. The girls had some back home in London before we left, so whenever we wanted we could connect with them.”
LEARN ACTIVELY WHEREVER YOU GO “Wherever you go, be active and seek out people who are interesting in the community. Keep your kids engaged. In Corsica we learned about Napoleon. In Mexico we met a shark scientist and helped her research baby sharks. In French Polynesia, we went for a hike and encountered archaeologists digging for ruins, and they found a bone while we were standing there! All these experiences stayed with them.”
DON’T WORRY ABOUT SCHEDULES “Let them run their own schedule. It’s not healthy for kids to be starting the school day so early like they do on land. They could make a schedule that suited each of them individually and skip a few days when we were travelling.”
KEEP IT FUN “It has to be fun; they have to enjoy it. Every year we’d ask the kids, ‘Do you want to keep going?’ It was up to them as much as us.”

Yachts in your shortlist
I spent a night in Panama's richest neighborhood, often called a 'little Dubai' or the 'Miami of Latin America'
- Punta Pacifica is Panama City's most expensive neighborhood.
- The neighborhood has man-made islands, private marinas, and penthouses worth $5 million.
- I stayed at the five-star JW Marriott Panama and experienced the neighborhood's luxury firsthand.
Duncan McGowan describes Panama City's Ocean Reef Islands as "perfection."
The landscaping is manicured flawlessly, never a leaf or branch out of place. You'd have to hunt to find trash anywhere on the islands, and instead, you're more likely to notice bird songs filling the air.
Looking one way, all you see is the endless ocean. Turn around, and there's a stunning cityscape behind you, McGowan, the president of Punta Pacifica Realty , told Business Insider.
The Ocean Reef Islands are part of Panama's Punta Pacifica neighborhood, and that perfection is exactly what Panama's wealthiest residents seek.
On a recent trip to the country, I saw the opulence that residents chase across Punta Pacifica, Panama's wealthiest neighborhood.
I landed in Panama City, snapped skyline pictures, and texted my friends that I had arrived. Immediately, one pointed out how the city resembled Miami.
I spent my first night in Casco Viejo, Panama City's old town. From the coast, I could look out onto Punta Pacifica, where a grouping of tall buildings reached out to the clouds.
My friend's initial thoughts about Punta Pacifica aren't uncommon. McGowan said people always compare Punta Pacifica to dense cities like Miami, New York City, and Dubai. Central America Living refers to the neighborhood as a "mini-Dubai," and The New York Times said in 2014 that Punta Pacifica is "often called the Miami of Latin America."
The comparisons made sense. All three cities are home to impressive skyscrapers and coastlines. And since Punta Pacifica is home to the Ocean Reef Islands, which were man-made in the early 2000s, it's easy to see how it's grouped with Dubai.
But McGowan said that they are vastly different destinations.
"It resembles all of them, but it has its own flavor," McGowan said. "I think Panama City and Punta Pacifica have matured enough now that it doesn't have to be compared. It stands on its own."
The next day, I headed to Punta Pacifica.
Three decades ago, Punta Pacifica didn't exist.
Created in the early 2000s, a company that built one of Panama City's major highways earned the rights to develop 86 acres of landfill and 73 acres of mainland along an area of the city's coast known today as Punta Pacifica.
McGowan, who has worked in Panama's real-estate market for nearly two decades, said it was designed as a luxury area from the start, and living in Punta Pacifica can come at a steep price.
The neighborhood is home to more than a dozen condominiums and apartment complexes, which can range in price. On the lower end, McGowan said residents can expect to pay around $2,200 a square meter, while prime real estate can cost $7,000 a square meter.
A quick search on Punta Pacifica Realty or Panama Realtor shows one-bedroom apartments for sale at $200,000 and luxury penthouses for as much as $5 million .
I spent a night in the neighborhood's famous TOC building.
One building stands out in Punta Pacifica's skyline with its sail-like shape: the TOC building.
Today, TOC stands for The Ocean Club, but ask anyone in Panama, and they know it by its former name, the Trump Ocean Club.
The Trump Organization wasn't the building developer; local developer Roger Khafif was. However, the Associated Press reported that the Trump name was licensed to the building to increase its credibility and notoriety.
It became Ivanka Trump's business project in 2006, according to NBC , and since its opening in 2011, the building's history has been riddled with scandals. An NBC and Reuters investigation found that many of the property's brokers, customers, and investors were tied to drug trafficking and international crime.
In 2015, the AP reported that "concerns about overspending and transparency" led the Trump management company to be forced out after a vote by condo owners and board members. However, the Trump Organization refused to accept the vote and claimed that it quit instead. Along with that announcement, the Trump Organization demanded a $5 million termination fee, according to the outlet.
In 2018, the AP reported that Marriott International took over management and renamed it The Ocean Club to keep its TOC branding.
Today, the 70-story building is one of the largest mixed-use buildings in Panama.
The building includes the JW Marriott Panama and its 369 hotel rooms, along with about 630 condos, McGowan said.
It's the neighborhood's only five-star hotel. In addition to the hotel rooms and condos, the building is home to a casino, a handful of restaurants, real-estate offices, a spa, a gym, and multiple salons.
I spent a night in an executive suite at the JW Marriott and experienced Punta Pacifica's opulence firsthand.
A night at the JW Marriott felt like the ideal way to experience Panama's richest neighborhood. So, at 4 p.m., I arrived at the skyscraper and headed to the hotel's lobby on floor 16.
I received a key to my suite and headed to floor 31. Golden light cast across the room as I stepped inside. The suite had an open concept, with a shower and bathtub looking to Panama City's skyline.
According to TripAdvisor, standard rooms typically cost between $193 and $290 for a night. BI received a media rate for the room.
The same views could be seen from the king-size bed.
The suite was spacious, with two of the room's four walls lined with windows. A loveseat, table, and desk filled one area of the room. In another corner, a king-size bed called my name.
A balcony faced hundreds of condos and a sliver of ocean.
While TOC might be the most recognizable building in Punta Pacifica, it's far from the only condominium in the neighborhood.
A large balcony in my hotel room was just a few hundred feet away from other balconies. Below me, I spotted a bright blue pool, a parking garage, and a playground for the neighborhood children.
Hotel guests have access to amenities like a gym and spa. Plus, they can access other parts of the building, like the casino on the top floors.
Before the sun sank below the horizon, Moises Muñoz, the international sales manager at the JW Marriott Panama, gave me a tour of the building.
He compared it to a cruise ship, where everything you need is in one place.
We explored the commercial area downstairs, where real-estate offices, restaurants, salons, and businesses are located.
Inside the hotel, there's a spa and gym, which both hotel and condo guests can use. The Marriott is also home to the restaurant Masi and a Cava 15, a bar designed in conjunction with Louis Vuitton, Muñoz said.
The most impressive part was the infinity pools with seamless views out onto the ocean.
While luxury details such as a glass elevator and executive lounge heightened the stay, the most impressive part of the hotel was its two infinity pools.
Later that evening, I dined on fresh ceviche at the hotel's restaurant Masi.
While it was tempting to order room service and dine on my meal from the luxury of my executive suite, the lush oasis at the hotel's Masi restaurant called my name.
The restaurant serves Panamanian and Latin American cuisine. I ordered a trio of different ceviches alongside a pumpkin dish. Each bite had the ideal balance of citrusy and fresh flavors.
Before I went to bed that night, I noticed that only a handful of the hundreds of condos had their lights on.
McGowan explained that many of Punta Pacifica's condo owners don't live there year-round. Instead, it's a second, third, or even fourth home for the residents.
They might escape to Punta Pacifica during the winter or stay for a few weeks at a time. McGowan also added that most of Punta Pacifica's residents are foreigners.
McGowan said that even with its past, The Ocean Club is still one of the most luxurious condominium towers in the country.
McGowan said the building remains one of Punta Pacifica's luxury staples, adding that owning a condo there is like living in a high-end hotel.
Later, I explored the rest of the neighborhood.
Stepping outside the hotel, it was impossible to know the ocean was just a few hundred feet away. Instead, nearly every direction was filled with skyscrapers.
As I explored the small neighborhood, I spotted just a handful of stores and restaurants.
I covered most of the neighborhood in less than an hour. Along the way, I spotted dog parks with designer pooches, pristine playgrounds for children, and lobbies with spiraling staircases and impressive chandeliers.
It was clear that the area oozed wealth.
McGowan said that while it's a dense area, it often feels like a quiet neighborhood.
"I love this neighborhood," McGowan said. "I don't think I would move to another neighborhood in Panama City. This is the neighborhood I consider home."
Punta Pacifica has everything McGowan needs. There are stores, some of the city's top restaurants, and the ocean just around the corner. Everything is within walking distance, and McGowan has gotten to know his neighbors there.
"I bought myself a new car in August. I was driving it yesterday morning, and when I looked the car had 2,100 kilometers on it," he said.
And if he does need to drive, McGowan said Punta Pacifica is close to other popular areas in Panama. You're a short drive to Casco Viejo and other downtown parts of Panama City.
To wrap up my exploration, I headed to the most luxurious part of Punta Pacifica: the Ocean Reef Islands.
A short, narrow bridge leads to two small artificial islands, where the most expensive properties in Punta Pacifica are located.
"Ocean Reef Islands, today, is Panama's most expensive neighborhood in price per square meter," McGowan said, adding that the average price per square meter there is $7,000.
The man-made islands cater to Panama's ultrawealthy residents.
According to The New York Times , Empresas ICA announced plans to construct the two islands in 1998, around the same time the creation of Punta Pacifica was announced. Grupo Los Pueblos, a Panamanian company, was hired by Empresas ICA as the project's developer.
The project was largely completed in 2016, McGowan said.
"It is more expensive because they had to create the islands," McGowan said. "So the land itself has more value."
My walk was cut short; only residents and guests could enter the islands. McGowan painted a picture of the area for me.
He said the two islands have a slightly different feel because they're zoned differently.
One island is predominantly zoned for homes, while the second has more condominiums with taller buildings.
Currently, McGowan said the developers are in the last stage of the project, which is building the commercial component of Ocean Reef. This will include stores, restaurants, spas, and fitness centers.
These operations are catered to and supported by the island's residents since no one else can visit.
Between the islands is the yacht club and marina, which McGowan called the "jewel of the island." On a typical workday, the marina is teeming with yachts. Come Saturday, however, the island is deserted, with its yacht owners all out exploring nearby islands.
Ultimately, McGowan said the Ocean Reef Islands offer a tropical escape from Panama's bustling city life.
McGowan said stepping onto Ocean Reef Islands is peaceful. There's always a breeze, and bird songs fill the air.
"You really do feel like you're on a tropical island," McGowan said. "But you turn your head and look back to the city and see a massive skyline."
It's the best of both worlds, McGowan said.
Between yacht clubs and infinity pools, a night in Punta Pacifica highlighted how the city's wealthy live.
After less than 24 hours in the neighborhood, I tasted fresh ceviche, swam in the most luxurious pool of my life, and saw impressive condos people spent years dreaming of.
It's easy to see how this neighborhood earned its reputation as the Miami of Panama, but just as McGowan said, the neighborhood is truly its own unique oasis.
And you have to visit to experience it.

'Star Wars' Actor Ahmed Best Opens Up About Jar Jar Binks Hate 25 Years Later: 'My Career Began and Ended'
'Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace' celebrates its 25th anniversary on May 19 and is back in theaters now.
Ahmed Best recently spoke with People about the breakout role that set his career on a difficult path.
Best, 50, voiced the role of Jar Jar Binks in George Lucas' three Star Wars prequels. Following the theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace in 1999, the actor went through what he called "the first textbook case of cyber bullying" with people not only hating on his character but also attacking him as a person.
"Everybody came for me," he remembered. "I'm the first person to do this kind of work, but I was also the first Black person, Black man."
Jar Jar Binks was the first character created through motion-capture technology to be prominently featured in a live-action film.

"It really wasn't easy," Best reflected. "I was very young. I was 26. And it's hard to have this idea that the thing you've been working all your life for, you finally get it and you're finally in the big leagues and the highest level of the game, and you hold your own. All of these years you're just like, 'I belong at the top of the game. I belong at the highest level.'"
Best, who'd been a cast member of Stomp , said he was "ostracized" by Hollywood due to the negativity towards Jar Jar Binks, even though The Phantom Menace —the first new Star Wars film in 16 years—eclipsed $1 billion at the worldwide box office.
"And then all of a sudden people pull the rug out from under you. And I was just like, 'What is happening now?' My career began and ended," he said. "I didn't know what to do, and unfortunately there was really no one that could help me, because it was such a unique position; it had never happened before in history."
Best revealed in 2019 that the negativity reached a point where he contemplated suicide. "I felt tired of having to explain myself. I felt tired of having to defend myself and defend my work," he said in the video below. "I felt tired of having to fight back against racism and the racial stereotypes. I just wanted to play a part. I was exhausted."

"I didn't want to hurt my family like that," Best said of that moment. "So it was something bigger than me that made me walk away. I still was lost. I still couldn't find my footing, and I just felt the injustice of it all. How could I have achieved such a wonderful thing, and then nothing? Nothing. I was longing to continue. I wanted to continue this work. I wanted to continue moving in this direction and seeing what the CGI thing could turn into."
Best returned to the world of Star Wars last year, playing Jedi Master Kelleran Beq in an episode of the hit Disney+ series The Mandalorian . He previously played Beq in the 2020 game show Star Wars: Jedi Temple Challenge .
Despite everything he went through with Jar Jar Binks, he is open to revisiting the character as long as he can provide "some really good closure."
"I would love just for there to be some really good closure, just to know what happened to Jar Jar. And then I don't think it needs to be tragic," he told People . "There was this one piece of Star Wars literature where Jar Jar ended up being this homeless clown in the streets begging for money or something like that. And I was like, 'I don't think so. I don't think that's Jar Jar's fate.'"
"Jar Jar was spectacularly clumsy and failed upwards," he continued. "He was just a wonderful character that always found a way to succeed. And I would love to know Jar Jar's fate from there, even if it's a scene that closes it."
This fall's Lego Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy on Disney+ won't give Jar Jar a proper canonical sendoff, but it will bring back Best to voice the role and give life to a fan theory/joke: Darth Jar Jar . "Been holding on to this one for a long time. For those who have been wondering, YES, a [Sith Lord Darth Jar Jar] lives," Best wrote on Instagram sharing the teasers.
The actor told People he believes being transparent about what he went through was cathartic, but also necessary because "no one should ever have to feel like that."
“I had to let this out. I had to let people know that this happened. This was a thing," he said. "Because no one should ever have to feel like that, to that extreme.”
Ahead of its 25th anniversary on May 19, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace is playing in theaters now. Last weekend it was No. 2 at the domestic box office behind The Fall Guy , making $8.7 million.
