Motor Yacht/Power Cruiser

Motor yachts, as indicative in the name, are sizeable recreational vessels with one, or more likely two engines for primary propulsion. There’s no definitive line between what is a boat and a yacht but generally, yachts run 40 to 90 feet, are more expensive and offer an element of luxury as well as the ability to cruise farther for longer periods of time. 

Yachts to 60 feet are usually operated by the owner, while yachts 60-90 feet may have a professional captain. Yachts over 90 feet fall into the realm of superyachts where both crew needs and the maintenance dollars rise sharply.

Yachts typically have several staterooms or cabins and at least one “head” or bathroom. A “galley” or kitchen is included and some larger yachts with a “flybridge” or an open upper deck, may have an optional outside galley with a grill and a sink. A salon or living room is usually the main social space and some larger yachts include a walk-in utility space and engine room. On deck, a yacht may have amenities like outdoor dining areas, an outside steering station or “helm” and sunpads or settees on the bow or aft deck for lounging. 

Many motor yachts today are highly stylized and offer an impressive level of privacy and luxury for the owners. Designer accommodations, high-end appliances and plenty of space to entertain multiple small groups are mostly standard.

Activities with Motor Yachts/Power Cruisers

GREAT FOR Overnight Cruising  • Day Cruising

Depending on the brand and design of the motor yacht, you can do pretty much anything with one including island hopping, dock-to-dock coastal cruising or ocean crossing. You can cruise a day, a week, a month or even several years on a motor yacht and venture anywhere from the Great Lakes to the Caribbean and beyond. You can entertain a crowd for an afternoon happy hour cruise, venture farther on family weekends with the kids or explore remote waterways during retirement.

Ownership Costs of Motor Yachts/Power Cruisers

The purchase price of a motor yacht or power cruiser varies with size, age, brand and onboard amenities and gear like the number of engines, etc. Most new yachts will be at least $100,000 and some will run into the millions of dollars. In addition to the initial price, you’ll need to estimate the cost of additional gear like electronics that are often priced separately as well as the cost of a “berth” or dock space, insurance and state registration or U.S. Coast Guard documentation.

Even new motor yachts need maintenance including interior and exterior cleaning, bottom scraping, hull polishing and waxing, engine tune-ups, and so on. The more engines, generators, and gear like refrigerators, electronic displays and battery banks, the more maintenance you will need and the higher the expense.

At the very least, your operation costs will include fuel (gas or diesel) and dockage. When professional crew like a captain and/or a chef is involved, costs can soar.

Motor Yacht/ Power Cruiser Boat Technology/Materials/Features

Because these vessels are designed to cruise long distances, they typically have fairly sophisticated electronic navigation and communication systems. They will also have significant ground tackle (anchor, chain and a windlass ) and they’ll have sizable engines, generators to charge batteries and other equipment. Some may have stabilization systems like gyroscopes or protruding underwater fins to help the vessel stay upright and avoid rolling and that helps minimize seasickness.

Riviera celebrates 6000th motor yacht milestone

Riviera's 6000th motor yacht rolls off the production line 44 years after the luxury motor yacht specialist's founding.

Riviera has celebrated the launch of its 6000th motor yacht, a milestone described as a “phenomenal” achievement in the luxury motor yacht maker’s 44-year history.

The launch of the 5400 Sports Yacht Platinum Edition was marked with a special ceremony involving staff and Riviera owner Rodney Longhurst. The factory employs 950 team members responsible for building the Riviera motor yacht range, with 60 per cent of the company’s output destined for export markets.

Fittingly, though, the 6000th build, which came off Riviera’s Coomera, Queensland-based production line yesterday, is owned by Peter Haig, who has owned nine other Riviera models.

“The design evolution over the 36 years that I have owned Riviera yachts has been phenomenal,” Haig said.

“One of the most important points for me is that Riviera is totally Australian.

We are proud that we own a world-class motor yacht that has been designed and built by brilliant and dedicated local craftspeople.

“I would like to say on behalf of the 6000 Riviera owners around the world, a big and sincere thank you, to all of you, for your hard work, your commitment to quality and thank you for building the best boats in the world.”

Longhurst said the 6000th build was an “incredible achievement” for Riviera.

“This historic event reinforces Riviera’s reputation as one of the most sought-after motor yachts in the world,” he said.

“To be successful on the highly competitive global stage of luxury boat building, you must have an absolute commitment to design, quality and owner care.

“I couldn’t be more proud of our team, and I am grateful to all the Riviera owners around the world who not only enjoy our yachts themselves but share this wonderful experience with their family and friends,” Longhurst said.

Riviera motor yachts are now sold in markets via a dealer network that, as well as Australia, includes the Americas, Europe and New Zealand.

It currently builds around 150 motor yachts a year. The 6000th boat is one of more than 800 Sports Yachts built since Riviera launched the 3600 Sports Yacht in 2005.

The range was enhanced in 2019 with the launch of the Sports Yacht Platinum Edition range featuring a higher level of luxury and appointment, with more than 230 sold.

The 6000th Riviera motor yacht will join 11 other models at the motor yacht maker’s 2024 Sanctuary Cove International Boat Show display in late May – alongside the reveal of an all-new model.

Riviera makes a range of luxury motor yachts from 39 to 78 feet in range.

Built by the Italian shipyard San Lorenzo in 2015, the 46 metre superyacht SCORPION is the eighth vessel in the shipyard’s 46 steel line. Constructed with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she features naval architecture by the in-house team at San Lorenzo, whilst her exterior design was undertaken by Francesco Paszkowski. The elegance of the external lines give SCORPION the unmistakable San Lorenzo’s style which makes every San Lorenzo yacht a timeless classic, never influenced by the temporary fashion trends.

Her main salon is particularly bright and welcoming, epitomising the aforementioned desired owner’s concept perfectly. The dark, wooden flooring contrasting with the light upholstery and various brightly coloured decorative pieces.

The dining area is located on the upper deck, and is one of the brightest spaces on the vessel, connecting seamlessly to the outside with floor to ceiling sliding glass doors. A gorgeous round glass table is surrounded by elegant turquoise dining chairs for ten guests. Other amenities on board include a fully equipped gym and sauna.

The staircase hosts what is unquestionably one of SCORPION ’s most unique and interesting aesthetic features in a specially created crystal sculpture. Transforming colour at each deck from blue to turquoise-green, the 3.9 metre piece immediately draws the eye and creates an ideal ambiance for entertainment.

Moving outside to her exterior spaces, her spacious sun deck is a hub of activity, with a large Jacuzzi situated next to a large space dedicated to sun loungers, a spacious al fresco dining area that seats up to 10 guests, as well as a bar and additional sunloungers towards the aft. The main deck is home to a large seating area, comprised of two comfortable L shaped sofas and leading down to the large beach club.

Elsewhere, her huge garage astern houses an impressive seven metre tender, with an additional large garage located at the bow to host a wide range of water toys. Furthermore, an external lighting system gives the whole boat a multicolor effect, switching to different chromatic shades for a captivating and unique atmosphere.

SCORPION accommodates guests over five generous staterooms, comprised of a large master suite on the main deck in addition to two double cabins and two twin cabins on the lower deck. The master’s suite is decorated in a delicate palette of creams, white, silver and lilacs and is inundated with natural light from the large windows framing the stateroom and private office. The large bathroom is both sophisticated and stylish, with a large bathtub and his and hers sinks.

All guest accommodation is located on the lower deck. The mosaics in the bathrooms were all made especially by a Moscow-based artist, continuing the artistic ambiance present in all areas on board. A crew of nine are also accommodated for on the lower deck.

The 46-metre SCORPION yacht was built in 2015 and is ABS-classed and MCA-compliant. She cruises at 14 knots and is fitted with zero-speed stabilisers for added comfort.

Her interior, designed by Tiziana Vercellesi and the SCORPION yacht owner themselves, is an Art Deco-inspired haven of opulence. Her upper deck sky lounge is the real showpiece, boasting an aquarium and formal dining at a round glass table with circular sliding doors that connect it to the upper deck.

Up to 12 guests will sleep across five cabins during your SCORPION yacht charter. The full-beam owner’s suite lies on the main deck and boasts a king-size bed, an en suite with a Jacuzzi and jet shower, and two private terraces. The rest of the cabins comprise two VIP cabins and two convertible twins, each with integrated entertainment systems and en suite bathrooms.

Yacht Facilities & Entertainment

The sun deck of the SCORPION yacht is full of amenities to help you relax. You can move around the multiple sunbathing areas to maximise your tanning and pop up the biminis when you need to find some shade. You can unwind in the Jacuzzi or enjoy a barbecued meal at the alfresco dining table amidship.

The sun deck is also an ideal space to entertain, thanks to the outdoor LED lighting that gives the whole space a fun and funky club-like atmosphere. For special sundowners, head to the viewing table on the fore deck and take in the vista.

If you need to recover from a night of partying, you’ll find plenty of loungers on the upper deck aft and main deck aft that are ideal for an alfresco nap. Should you prefer to sweat it out, you can go through the beach club and work out in the fully equipped gym before loosening up in the sauna after and then enjoying a massage from the onboard therapist. Once you’ve taken a dip, you can head back to the swim platform and recline across even more sun loungers.

A crew of 10 will make sure your SCORPION yacht charter is an exceptional experience.

When you want to enjoy some leisure time ashore, there’s a custom-made Limo tender and a 4-metre Lomac tender available to transfer you.

The SCORPION motor yacht also carries a variety of water toys for you to enjoy. You could zip across the waves on the multi-person Jet Skis, Seabobs and towable toys, or have a go at the jet surfboard, fly board and wakeboard. For something more mindful, you can don the snorkelling gear and explore the reefs.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Pleasantly surprised, service is good so is the food. Great selection of Fusion food, a mixture of Italian, Japanese, European, Asian etc. A pleasantly nice dining experience, highly recommended, a must try!

Had to wait for the food for 1.5 hours and then another 20 minutes for the check. Finally called for the manager and he offered... a 10% discount as a compensation. Simply pathetic! The food is mediocre at best. Not bad per se, but one... would expect something better considering the prices. There are many places to eat in area that are much better. Avoid this one at all costs. Food is very expensive,very pretentious, doesn't worth that money. Portions are very small. We ordered ravioli and there were 4! Four raviolis! For almost 15 euros. Then we asked to bring us dessert menu but nothing, they didn't even bothered, so we payed and left... without dessert. Very poor service for that price. More

This is a very good restaurant. The food is really good, maybe the best in Moscow. The service is also good. The view from the restaurant is great. The prices are very high.

Visited this lovely restaurant with a friend of mine. It was relaxingly warm August evening - so the place on the river seemed like a good idea. We came quite early and the restaurant was not full. The hostesses kindly offered several places to sit... and we chose to sit on the sofas. We had some wine, which was good. We struggled a bit when deciding about the food as few options (scallops) were not available. Fish on ice on display did not look very fresh. To be honest it was an unusually hot August and it is probably understandable that some see food options were not available. However, we did manage to order something and sat waiting and looking onto the river. My long-legged friend struggled sitting at the low sofa and the manager noticed that, offering as a very good, proper table beside the open window. It was nice touch and I was very pleased by their polite observations and immediate reaction to solve the problem. Food was quite good and presentation was perfect. Perhaps I can something about the food, but 1 visit is not enough to criticize or make a definitive opinion. Overall, quality place, which of course, does not come cheap. I would recommend this restaurant without hesitation. More

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Active materials possess unique properties of being able to respond autonomously to external stimuli, yet realizing and regulating the motion behavior of active machines remains a major challenge. Conventional control approaches, including sensor control and external device control, are both complex and difficult to implement. In contrast, active materials–based self-oscillators offer distinct properties such as periodic motion and ease of regulation. Inspired by paddle boats, we have proposed a conceptual light-fueled self-paddling boat with a photothermally responsive liquid crystal elastomer (LCE)–based motor that operates under steady illumination and incorporates an LCE fiber. Based on the well-established dynamic LCE model and rotation dynamics, the dynamic equations for governing the self-paddling of the LCE-steered boat are derived, and the driving torque of the LCE-based motor and the paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat are formulated successively. The numerical results show that two motion modes of the boat under steady illumination: the static mode and the self-paddling mode. The self-paddling regime arises from the competition between the light-fueled driving torque and the frictional torque. Moreover, the critical conditions required to trigger the self-paddling are quantitatively examined as well as the significant system parameters affecting the driving torque, angular velocity, and paddling velocity. The proposed conceptual light-fueled self-paddling LCE-steered boat exhibits benefits including customizable size and being untethered and ambient powered, which provides valuable insights into the design and application of micromachines, soft robotics, energy harvesters, and beyond.

Effect of maximum frictional torque M ¯ frict on (a) net driving torque M ¯ net and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. A critical maximum frictional torque of M ¯ frict = 0.305 exists for triggering the self-paddling. An increase in the maximum frictional torque M ¯ frict leads to a decline in the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling.

A threshold value of q ¯ = 0.234 for heat flux to trigger the self-paddling is witnessed. As the heat flux increases, both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling undergo gradual increments.

Effect of contraction coefficient C on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. A critical contraction coefficient of C = 0.311 is observed to be responsible for initiating the self-paddling. In addition, an increment in the contraction coefficient leads to an increase in both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling.

Effect of initial stretch rate λ 0 on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. A critical initial stretch rate of λ 0 = 1.282 is present to trigger the self-paddling. Moreover, when raising the initial stretch rate, both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling exhibit an increase.

Effect of radius R ¯ 1 of wheel 1 on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. The self-paddling mode is triggered when R ¯ 1 reaches 1.198. Furthermore, a larger R ¯ 1 corresponds to an increase in both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling.

Effect of paddle length l ¯ on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. An increase in the paddle length leads to a gradual decrease in both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling boat.

Effect of rotational damping coefficient β ¯ 1 of paddle on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. As the damping coefficient of paddle increases, the angular velocity of the self-paddling decreases, while the velocity of boat is unchanged.

With the increase in the rotational damping coefficient of boat, both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling boat undergo gradual declines.

Effect of elastic coefficient k ¯ L of LCE fiber on (a) driving torque M ¯ drive and (b) angular velocity of the wheel and paddling velocity of the LCE-steered boat. Self-paddling is initiated at a critical elastic coefficient of k ¯ L = 6.802 . Furthermore, the increase in elastic coefficient of the LCE fiber results in a simultaneous increase in both the angular velocity and paddling velocity of the self-paddling boat.
