Designed by Terence Disdale , an award-winning designer responsible for creating some of the most renowned superyachts in the world.

Terence Disdale has had no formal training in yacht design or engineering, but despite this, he is still one of the most sought-after designers in the world.

Along with the GRACE yacht, he also has several yachts that he designed.

One of these is the Al Salamah, the 280 million dollar superyacht owned by once Saudi Arabian Crown Prince, Sultan bin Abdulaziz, the Pelorus superyacht, and the Tatoosh superyacht, a 303-foot superyacht owned by the American businessman, Paul Allen.

Onboard the GRACE yacht is an elevator, a beach club, a grand piano, underwater lights, and even a swimming platform.

Adding to this, she also has zero-speed stabilizers to keep guests and crew alike safe and stable when going out to the rough seas.

She also has full air-conditioning to keep guests cool in the hot summer. Speaking of guests, the GRACE yacht can comfortably accommodate lots of people at a time.

She can easily host 12 guests at a time by utilizing her six suite rooms and one VIP cabin, with a cabin configuration of 1 Master and four doubles.

Along with this, she can also hold up to 23 crew members to attend to the guest’s needs.

Specifications

She boasts an incredible 81.00 meters or 265.75 ft length, making her the 126th biggest superyacht globally. Adding to this, she also has a beam of 14.00 meters or 45.93 ft and a draught of 3.50 meters or 11.5 ft.

GRACE yacht was engineered using a steel hull with an aluminum superstructure.

She currently weighs around 2,306 tons, and powering this behemoth are twin 2,000hp Caterpillar 3516-B engines partnered with her 170,000-liter fuel tank.

The GRACE yacht can comfortably cover a distance of over 4,500 nautical miles at cruising speeds of 14 knots and a maximum speed of 16.5 knots.

Along with this, she can carry upwards of 35,000 liters of water, so docking constantly to refill water is not a problem in this superyacht.

The Belle of the Ball Once Again: Grace, Palmetto Bluff’s Iconic Motor Yacht Debuts

In November 2023, the next chapter in the remarkable story of Grace , one of the last existing pre-World War I gas-powered yachts, began on the picturesque May River that runs through the heart of Bluffton, South Carolina. Under the guidance of The Grace Club—a newly formed founder/member sponsored, not-for-profit organization—after extensive restoration, the beautiful antique motor yacht built for the purposes of commuting across New York Harbor, returned in all her glory to her home at Palmetto Bluff. Named in honor of Grace Graham Vanderbilt, the sister of the original owner of Palmetto Bluff, Richard T. Wilson Jr., and wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt III, the iconic vessel is ready for her next act.

Grace’s story began in 1913 when Joseph B. Cousins contracted the New York Yacht, Launch and Engine Company to build a motor yacht for his personal use. Built in Morris Heights, New York along the Harlem River, after completion, the yacht was delivered to Cousins in Brooklyn, where she was used for recreation and travel back and forth to New York City. The original name of the yacht was Sispud II , and she was built in the style referred to as a Double Ender Commuter Yacht. At 60×12.5 feet, the framework was constructed with steam-bent white oak ribs with a white oak keel as the base; the planking below the waterline was yellow pine, while the above planking was cedar. Her original motor was a four-cylinder, 50-horsepower gasoline engine with a top speed of 12 miles per hour. Located in the engine room were two bunks, a toilet, and a sink for the two-person crew required to operate the vessel. The remainder of the below-deck area consisted of a stateroom with a twin bed, a salon with a dining area, and a galley.

Cousins eventually sold the Sispud II in 1925 to James Adams and his wife Gertie, owners of the James Adams Floating Theater, who used the vessel as their live-aboard while traveling the Eastern Seaboard from the Chesapeake Bay to North Carolina. The 800-seat floating theater was built on a barge and pulled along the waterway by tugboats to coastal towns of the South, bringing music, shows, and vaudeville acts to isolated areas.

In 1926, Edna Ferber, a noted novelist, traveled with the theater during the summer season and wrote the novel, Show Boat , based on her experiences traveling with the troupe and living aboard Sispud II . The novel became an award-winning Rodgers & Hammerstein Broadway show and later a motion picture. Adams sold his interest in the theater to his brother in 1930, but continued ownership of the yacht.

Sispud II had two additional owners: Dr. Jay Paul Jeter, a dentist from Philadelphia (1937-1960) and Richard M. Tunis from Kennett Square, Pennsylvania (1960-1963). In 1963, Henry and Stella Szablewski from Lansdale, Pennsylvania, purchased Sispud II and renamed the vessel Acquilla from the Latin for “Eagle.” They sailed her in Chesapeake Bay but, after Henry’s death, Stella could not manage the vessel herself and eventually abandoned her at Swan Creek Marina in Rock Hall, Maryland in 1980.

In 1990, Earl McMillen, III of Newport, Rhode Island, owner of McMillen Yachts, Inc. which restored and maintained a fleet of classic wooden ships, found Acquilla being used as an out-of-water residence. After learning that The Cloister at Sea Island, Georgia was looking for such a yacht, McMillen’s team undertook a two-year restoration project, finishing in 1996. Acquilla was renamed Zapala , in homage to the name of the personal yacht of The Cloister’s developer, Harry Coffin, in the 1920s.

After Palmetto Bluff opened in 2004, the community was looking for a period piece from the Wilson Family era at the turn of the century until 1926. As the yacht was built in 1913—two years before the Wilson mansion was completed—it was a perfect fit. Palmetto Bluff purchased the yacht in 2004, and the vessel was renamed Grace , after the youngest sister of R.T. Wilson, Jr., the wealthy New Yorker who purchased the 18,000 acres he named Palmetto Bluff in 1902. The vessel’s namesake, Grace Graham Wilson, was married to Cornelius (“Neily”) Vanderbilt III and was a society hostess in New York and Newport. For 15+ years, Grace provided a unique member experience on the May River, affording guests incredible views of the property, the Town of Bluffton, and surrounding waterways.

In December 2020, Grace experienced a main engine overheat which caused a cracked block, beginning a period of slow deterioration which resulted in the yacht being placed on land. In December 2022, a Palmetto Bluff Club member formed Operation Saving Grace to find a path forward towards putting her back into service. In partnership with Southstreet Partners, one of the largest owners and operators of private residential club and resort communities in the United States (including Kiawah Island, Palmetto Bluff, The Cliffs, Naples Grande, Barnsley Resort and Residences at Salamander) and the management team of the Palmetto Bluff Club, they worked collaboratively for the past year toward this shared objective. Built on the solid foundation of the partnership structure that was created between The Grace Club founders and Southstreet, a full-speed-ahead approach to restoring Grace was adopted. Restoration work included replacing the engine, repairing hull damage, refinishing and repainting the hull and exterior, refinishing the interior, replacing the navigation system, and acquiring recertification by the U.S. Coast Guard. The Grace Club requested the use of purpleheart wood, renowned for its durability and rot resistance, to use in Grace’s restoration. Southstreet’s commitment to the endeavor included transferring title of Grace to The Grace Club, providing long-term, rent-free access to the Grace Dock, and supplying ongoing marketing and communications support for The Grace Club operations.

“ Grace is an elegant and iconic motor yacht with a storied background and rich history spanning 110 years. A dedicated group of homeowners felt compelled to bring her back into service for the benefit of our neighbors and the larger Bluffton community,” Lee Leonard, president of The Grace Club said. “Working together with Southstreet Partners, a group of Palmetto Bluff members formed Operation Saving Grace, to return her to her full glory. I’m proud to say she is standing tall and became available for scheduled cruises, as well as private charters, in November of 2023.”

“We are grateful to The Grace Club for their dedication and partnership in protecting Grace —one of Palmetto Bluff’s iconic symbols—and we are happy to have been able to support this worthy endeavor,” Rob Duckett, president of operations for Southstreet Partners said.

The Grace Club will provide operational oversight and have responsibility for all maintenance of Grace . Their primary goal will be to operate Grace for the benefit of all Palmetto Bluff members and their families, Montage hotel guests, and the greater Bluffton community including charitable organizations and youth groups.

Quasar Expeditions Grace Yacht

Presented in 1953 to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco by Aristotle Onassis as a wedding gift, this 147-foot yacht, which the royals christened Deo Juvente II , served as a honeymoon cocoon during the couple’s nuptial cruise along the coasts of Sardinia and Corsica. Yet this romantic voyage was but a short chapter in the vessel’s storied history.

Deo Juvente II was originally owned by Franco-Argentinean Jacques “Santiago” Soulas and launched in 1928 by Camper & Nicholsons. Soulas named the vessel Monica after his daughter. Four years later, the Soulas family sold the yacht, which then changed hands several times before being acquired by the British Royal Navy in 1939.

During its stint in the military, the yacht—then named Rion —was stripped of its finery, reinforced, and fitted with a 12-pound quick-firing gun on the forecastle, a couple of 40 mm Oerlikons next to the bridge, and a rack on the stern to hold eight 300-pound depth charges. After World War II, the vessel was decommissioned and returned to Camper & Nicholsons to be restored to its former opulence.

Aristotle Onassis bought HMS Noir in 1951 and rechristened it Arion . The vessel remained in his charter fleet for a couple of years until he gave it to Prince Rainier and Princess Grace, who enjoyed the gift until 1958.

The vessel changed hands several more times, traveling to the Caribbean and the East Coast of the United States. In 2007, Quasar Expeditions (866.481.7790, quasarex.com) bought the boat to charter in the Galápagos and bestowed its current moniker, Grace . “Our company purchased the yacht because of its rich history, unique character, and classic style. We knew it was going to add a whole new element to a Galápagos cruising experience that no other ship on the islands could offer,” says Eduardo Diez Jr., commercial director for Quasar Expeditions. “It is probably now one of the most sought-after products in the archipelago.”

The yacht was relaunched in October and cruises two different itineraries in the Galápagos Islands. Pricing for the regular season starts at $127,000 for the entire vessel, which accommodates 18 guests in nine cabins plus crew for seven nights and eight days; $6,600 per person for a deluxe stateroom; and $8,900 per person for the newly renovated Grace Kelly Suite.

The Timeline

Launched as Monica in Southampton, England, by Camper & Nicholsons, the 147-foot craft was named after owner Jacques “Santiago” Soulas’s daughter.

The vessel is rechristened Rion by new owner Zarch Couyoumbian.

Prudential Insurance chairman George Tilley purchases the yacht.

The British Royal Navy requisitions the vessel for wartime use.

After some damage to the port engine, Rion becomes part of the Royal Navy Hospital.

The vessel is returned to prewar owner George Tilley after its restoration at Camper & Nicholsons.

The charter company of Aristotle Onassis acquires the yacht and names it Arion.

Prince Rainier and Princess Grace of Monaco receive the yacht as a wedding gift from Onassis and rename it Deo Juvente II. Winston Churchill is one of the couple’s many illustrious guests.

A Monegasque businessman buys the vessel, which he calls Daska.

The vessel is transported to the Bahamas by Crest Shipping and then to Montego Bay by Cove Shipping. Its new moniker is Angela.

The yacht’s name reverts to Daska, and it is seized by the Jamaican government.

SuperClubs chairman John Issa purchases the vessel, changes its name to Zein, and refits it in Tampa, Fla.

Quasar Expedition buys Zein and rechristens it Grace.

During Grace’s latest refurbishment, the apartment where Prince Rainier and Princess Grace honeymooned is remade into the Grace Kelly Suite.

Grace (1927)

Historical Summary:

Grace has a long and interesting story that includes everything from long sea lanes across big ocean to presidents and Hollywood actors.

Curlew 1927-1942

Built in 1927 by White & Co LTD, Southampton, England as the motor yacht «Curlew» for Colonel Herbert Molson. Molson was a Canadian businessman and brewery (Molson Brewery). He and his family used the yacht at The Great Lakes with home base in Montreal, Quebec.

USS Leader – Pyc-42 24 October 1942 – 11 May1945

Patrol Yacht Coastal. During World War II, she was acquired by the US Navy and used as a sonar school in LA Jolla California. In 1946, she was transferred to the War Shipping Administration. While in service for the US Navy, there were 25 crews on board and she was equipped with two 20mm machine guns, two synchemine rails and two rocket batteries.

Chito 1949 – 1956

Kenneth E. Wilson bought the boat at a surplus auction from War Shipping Administration and christened her "Chito." Mr. Wilson was a boat broker in Long Beach, Los Angeles. It turns out that he bought the boat as a front for General Abelardo L. Rodriguez, former President of Mexico, as there were restrictions on foreigners buying excessive materials from the United States. His son, Abelardo S. Rodriguez, was usually called Chito. Therefore, the yacht was renamed Chito. General Rodriguez had the boat as president’s boat and used it both for private use and affairs of state.

Hyding 1956-1979

In 1956 she was purchased by Jack Hyde from San Diego CA, who gave her the name of Hyding. Jack used her as a private yacht and chartered her. She was once chartered by Mike Todd, who used the yacht to impress Elizabeth Taylor and «steal» her from Kevin Mclory. In the early 60’s she was purchased by Warren St. Thomas, an artist, actor and producer, and eventually got some problems with the IRS (IRS) and the boat was sold or taken over by Mr. Assel Offe. She was then bought by Jack Ford who operated charter trips to Alaska and Hawaii. During one trip to Alaska, they had major problems and lost propulsion in both main engines outside Cape Mendocino CA, they had to be towed by Coast Guard back to their home port in Sausalito, San Francisco Bay, CA. After this the boat was still quiet for a period and taken over by John Mullen. His sons and some friends started repairing and fixing a little while on the boat. In 1979 she was sold to Paul Whitter.

Paullu 1979 – 1993

Paul and Louise Whittier took over the boat In 1972, they christened her "Paullu." She was towed to Fulton Shipyard in Antioch CA. There she got a big overhaul, the Cooper Bessemer diesel engines were exchanged with two used Caterpillar from around 1962. She also exchanged a lot of the interior and new electrical facilities on board. After she was taken over, she was used on the coast of British Columbia, with the main base on Goudge Island, Paul Whitters private island. She was used little after 1985 due to illness by the owners, and in 1993 she was bought by Henk Koster

Grace 1993-1996

Henk Koster and Henriette Suzanne Wasmer bought Paullu in 1993 and in early 1994 she was christened Grace in a ceremony on Lake Washington (Seattle). The name Grace is after American actor Grace P. Kelly, who Henk and Suzanne were very excited about. On March 8, 1994 she was ready to sail to her new home port in Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

The sail went down along California, Mexico, Guatemala, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica and through the Panama Canal. Further through the Caribbean and to Fort Lauderdale. Furthermore, the trip went to St. George`s in Bermuda before crossing the Atlantic and across to the Azores. They came in a heavy low pressure, but Henk Koster graduated flying and held Grace in the low pressure center, where it was quiet until they had to bunk on the Azores. After bunkering, the low pressure wind was at its worst and they had to turn around and seek shelter for the weather before the trip went on to the Netherlands.

In the winter of 1994/95 she was in the shipyard in the Netherlands and a lot was done on board before a trip up along the Swedish and Norwegian coasts. In the summer of 1996, the owners decided to sell Grace in London, but was advised by Ragnar Thorseth at Håholmen to go to Oslo and seek out Petter Sundt, Morten Bergesen and the owner of Eileen – as he did not know about her. After a visit on board, Erling Storm and Trygve Hegnar, bought Grace to operate in charter service.

Grace 1996- and forward

In the winter of 1996/97 there was a change of plate in the hull, a lot of new technical systems and a lot of safety equipment came in place to class the boat as a passenger boat, so that the boat was able to operate charters in the Oslo fjord and around the Norwegian coast.

Motor Yacht

Luxury motor yacht Grace E was built in 2004 by Italian shipyard Codecasa and represents a stylish and classic charter yacht. With a steel hull and aluminium superstructure, she features exterior design by Codecasa and the interior work of Anna & Frank Dellarolle. This well-balanced superyacht measures 49.9 metres and can accommodate up to 12 guests.

Motor yacht Grace E was previously known under the name of Andale but was rechristened in 2007 by her new American owner Green Mountain Coffee founder Bob Stiller.

Besides the name change he also undertook an interior refit of the superyacht in 2008; changing all her furniture; adding WiFi; and installing an audiovisual system that included Kaleidescape and iPod docking stations. The beginning of 2009 saw her emerge from a second major refit where her entire hull was repainted, outdoor cushions updated, and an enclosed gym on her sundeck was added.

Her interior décor creates a relaxing yet sophisticated ambience through the use of light colour tones and furnishings with plush comfort at the forefront.

Entrance to luxury motor yacht Grace E is via the aft deck where a sitting room positioned before the salon immediately creates the feeling of being in a mansion rather than onboard a yacht. The main deck features a formal dining area, casual lounge and game area.

The onboard skylounge is located in the bridge deck salon and is created for entertaining with a card table, bar, and TV seating area that opens up onto an outdoor deck. Located above and crowing the superyacht is the sundeck, boasting the newly added gym. An elevator services all four decks.

Amongst her six cabins are an indulgent master suite; a VIP suite; two Queen staterooms; and two twin staterooms. Forward of the foyer on the main deck is the master suite; a silk-carpeted room complete with study, walk-in wardrobe, and his and hers bathroom with large hot tub.

Unusually, the VIP cabin is also located on the main deck rather than in the traditional spot below decks. The cabin, nestled between the galley and crew service steps, offers a scenic view above the water line. The guest cabins are located below decks and are larger than the above VIP suite but lack the views. All accommodations feature private bathrooms and entertainment systems.

Luxury yacht Grace E is powered by two Caterpillar engines that allow her to reach a maximum speed of 17 knots.

Featuring a dedicated crew, Grace E is an excellent charter yacht for luxury vacations. The yacht cruises comfortably at 14 knots while her crew of 11 under the direction of Captain Marc Rebuffe ensure the needs of every guest are met.

The luxury motor yacht is equipped with an armada of water toys to provide endless entertainment during any yacht charter. Onboard water toys include tenders, water bikes, a sailboat, kayaks, waterskis and a range of snorkelling and fishing equipment.

Grace E cruises the West Mediterranean during the summer charter season and the Caribbean during the winter.

The luxury vessel has Lloyd’s classification and is fully MCA compliant.
