Princess Mary looked awesome on the waters of Langkawi Island, as it glided towards a sunset cruise that looked promising. The 16m-long multi-hull took one year in the making at a shipyard in Lumut, Perak, and since August, she has docked at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club and is being booked for sunset cruises, the most popular tourist cruise package on the Kedah island.

“She is custom-built to specifications and is the only catamaran with a spiral staircase,” says owner and manager, Marxus Lim. There are three air-conditioned cabins in the hulls, a main deck seating for 24, as well as a bar and buffet.

Amara Langkawi Holidays managing director, Chitra Danapalan, is glad that there is a new yacht in the selection.

“There’s a very competitive market out there with so many cruise operators around, so it’s nice to offer something new to my clients plus it’s a positive sign in what I still see as a recovery phase in the tourism industry after the pandemic,” she said.

“Cruise” as a general term in Langkawi refers to the commercial aspect of the island’s tourism industry. Sunset cruises, all-day or overnight cruises, and mangrove cruises are provided through a variety of different boats. There are also stopovers by ocean liner cruise ships which dock near Resorts World on the southwestern corner of the island.

In 2023, Langkawi received more than 40,000 passengers via cruise ships and it is estimated that 20,000 passengers more will come through by the end of December. There are seven cruise ships docking in Langkawi, and another 14 upcoming scheduled cruise ships, in November and December (data provided by Langkawi Development Authority).

Langkawi seems to offer a close-to-perfect cruising domain. With “sailing carpet” seas year-round, mainly good weather with seasonal breaks that works to the island’s advantage from a yachting point of view, and adequate infrastructure of ancillary yachting services. There’s also the added bonus of glorious landscapes featuring islands and mountain ranges and picture-scapes of sun, sea and skies – all these make for memorable cruises.

Royal Langkawi Yacht Club

There are three main marinas on the island. The Langkawi Yacht Club was built in 1996 and was relegated its “royal” status in 1999. It is well known for its big calendar event regattas – the Raja Muda Regatta (this year, it is happening from Nov 24-26), and the Royal Langkawi International Regatta Jan 15-20, 2024).

“The current estimated number of yachts in Langkawi recorded in the international Langkawi Yacht directory at this time (end October 2023) is around 500, including the ones on the dry dock. These are based on 130 here at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club, 100 in Telaga, 160 in Rebak, 10 at the Boustead Shipyard, 20 at the Northern Shipyard, 50 at the B&V Marine, 50 at anchorage,” explains Azlan Abdullah, executive director at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.

Telaga Harbour Marina

Swiss entrepreneur Felix Sutter, owns a 16m catamaran docked at Langkawi’s other marina, Telaga Harbour. “Telaga has one of the best settings, located in the middle of the jungle, so it is quite far away from man made noises. It has the best sunset spots, high quality infrastructure, great security, a capable and customer-friendly management team, too. And it is well protected from the elements, while being a good starting point to cruising destinations,” he says.

Telaga Harbour also has the distinction of being the site where the Jalur Gemilang is displayed. The sailing yacht belongs to Datuk Azhar Mansor, the first Malaysian to sail solo around the world in 1999, setting a new world record via an East-about route, verified by the World Speed Sailing Record Council as an official record.

Rebak Island Marina

The third marina is located on Rebak Island, southwest of Langkawi. It is described as a clean, quiet, non-commercialised storm protected harbour within a calm and sheltered marina basin with no surge and wake.

The marina also has the exclusive Rebak Island resort offering all day dining, bar and lounge, swimming pool, gym and private beach.

The support services

Rachel Robertson believes that these three marinas currently accommodate the flow of yacht tourism in Kedah. She and her shipwright husband have operated a yacht brokerage business on Rebak Island since 2007 where they reside and where her two children, now adults, were brought up. How did Rebak become their base?

“We had the opportunity to work on a boat that was already here. We met other contractors, and people in the industry, and had our application to be on the contractors list approved. From there, we just got to meet other ‘yachties’ who needed work. It was several years before we had an office.

“We used our own boat as a base/office/administration area until we were granted a resident tenancy. It was also very child friendly, and all marina residents get to use the swimming pool, beach, and tennis courts, not to mention the transient but friendly sailing community. It’s safe, and friendly and a good base for cruising yachties to get work done, or rest along their voyage,” she explains.

Are there career opportunities for Malaysians in this business? “Yes, definitely. The industry needs painters, fibreglass workers, marine engineers, mechanics, woodworkers, electricians, electronics technicians, boat care and cleaning servicemen, canvas workers, upholsters, sailmakers, metal workers and others. Not to mention crew positions,” Robertson shares.

Langkawi has got most of the fundamentals for a thriving cruise industry, not just from a tourism perspective but from a serious sailing aspect. For Sutter, however, some improvements need to be done. “The availability of an international hospital or school would make it easier for sure,” he says.

“More direct international flights would be another wish to have. With these improvements, more certified and specialised craftsmen would choose Langkawi as a base to move to and live with their families. As a result, maintenance work and access to parts would be easier too. One could say, the hardware is already here, but it just lacks the software,” he concludes.

“We are thrilled to be part of the new Royal Langkawi Yacht Club & Marina, moving our Asia Pacific Superyachts (APS) offices smack into the middle of the newly renovated RLYC, where we will continue to work with arriving Superyachts,” said APS Langkawi GM, Captain Charlie Dwyer.

RLYC executive director Wicky Sumdran commented: “RLYC is pleased to have Asia Pacific Superyachts presence on Langkawi and in particular at the Club with our newly expanded and upgraded facilities. APS, with its extensive networking and professionalism in handling Superyacht services, will provide the best services and facilities to visiting Superyachts to Langkawi. I view the presence of APS at RLYC as a strong alliance in driving more Superyachts to the waters of Langkawi.”

Royal Langkawi Yacht Club & Marina is positioned on the south-east of Langkawi, close to Kuah, providing easy access for Superyacht visitors to shopping, dining, entertainment, sports, transport and other businesses. A duty-free island paradise, captains and owners can benefit from notable savings in duty-free and refit services.

The Langkawi marina upgrading and expansion from 200 to 250 berths includes 4 berths for 60-70 meter superyachts and 2 berths for 80-90 meter mega yachts. The Superyacht berths are fitted with power pedestals of 400Amps for the 80-meter berths and 250Amps for the 60-meter berths. The redevelopment is targeted for the re-opening stages starting late November 2015 with full completion expected by end January 2016. Target dates are subject to various conditions and hopes are high that all will go well, as stated by Mr. Sumdran.

Since its opening in 1996, the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club has positioned itself at the forefront of the rebirth of boating in Malaysia, growing in tandem with the island’s development to emerge as the heart of sailing and yachting on Peninsular Malaysia’s northwest coast.

Fast becoming known as a Superyacht Refit Hub in Asia is Boustead Langkawi Shipyard. Captain Charlie reported : “We are working with the shipyard for yachts over 30 meters, bringing Superyacht needs full circle in Langkawi and providing excellent refit service and facilities with great value for cost.”

Royal Langkawi Yacht Club geared for redevelopment

royal langkawi yacht club news

Plans to redevelop RLYC Club & Marina includes superyacht berth expansion.

LANGKAWI, MALAYSIA – The Royal Langkawi Yacht Club (RLYC) is planning to, “Redevelop its club and marina to enhance its facilities and services, and meet the demands of the sailing and yachting community in the region and beyond” , reports Captain Charlie Dwyer of Asia Pacific Superyachts in Langkawi, Malaysia.

“Details of the RLYC plans are outlined in the following communication from RLYC, and when realized, will attract more Superyachts to Langkawi. The RLYC, accommodating mega-yachts up to 60 m with a low tide depth of 3 meters, upcoming redevelopment plans include the expansion of mega-yacht berths” , adds Captain Charlie. He also cautions captains to note due to the RLYC redevelopment project, club facilities will temporarily cease operations from 16 February 2015 until the end of October 2015.

The world-class 205 berth marina is situated on the south-east corner of Langkawi Island close to the island’s main town, providing excellent access to duty-free shops and business facilities. Located on the mystical island of Langkawi in the northwest of Peninsular Malaysia, RLYC is positioned as the ideal stopover for travellers whether by land or sea. The Langkawi archipelago comprises 104 beautiful jungle-covered islands of which only two are inhabited.

royal langkawi yacht club news

Established 18 years ago, the club has maintained its status as a prominent destination for sailors by providing world-class marina and berthing facilities as well as food and beverage services in an idyllic island setting. The RLYC accommodates mega-yachts up to 60 m with a low tide depth of 3 meters. Pontoons have direct electricity, fuel and water supply and offer high-speed wi-fi internet. Immigration and Customs are conveniently situated just a few minutes’ walk from the RLYC marina.

“RLYC has a long history and while we intend to maintain the traditions that have been established, we believe that redeveloping will enable us to provide our loyal clientele, and future clients, with what they deserve, which are world-class marina facilities and boutique hospitality services,” said Executive Director and General Manager, Wicky Sundram .

royal langkawi yacht club news

The redevelopment works, scheduled to begin in February 2015 and expected to be operational in end October 2015, will include the restructure and design of a new three-story block of shop lots, lifestyle floor and boutique retail outlets.

The main clubhouse will also undergo major refurbishment and Level 1 will see a grand lobby and reception area. A completely new concept will take over Level 2, and will feature eight boutique rooms for guest accommodations, four of which will have balconies overlooking the ocean and marina.

The project will involve redevelopment of the marina, including the expansion of mega-yacht berths. The marina will be fitted out with new power systems, sanitation pumps, safety equipment and additional berths.

In order to accommodate the RLYC redevelopment project, the club facilities at RLYC will temporarily cease operations from early 16 February 2015 until the end of October 2015.

In April 2008, the Club gained international limelight when it was recognised as the Best Asian Marina/Yacht Club of the Year, at the Christoffel Asia Boating Awards in Shanghai - a remarkable milestone for the Club, and the country, as it was the first time ever, a Malaysian Yacht Club had won the coveted award since the annual awards commenced in 2005.

The ground floor of Fisherman’s Wharf Langkawi has a multitude of new dining options from casual or lunch–to-go, to fine dining…  such as Jake’s Charbroiled Steaks, Scarborough’s Fish and Chips, Barbosa Pizza & Bar, Darabif Burger and Captain Eva’s Pool Bar.

Artisan Alley in The Courtyard is a vibrantly decorated retail space with 13 shops offering a full range of artisan products such as costume jewelry, clothing, wooden craft, soaps, candles, handmade ceramic ware, beachwear, books, antique maps, and even Turkish ornaments for home decor.

For some relaxing massage time, head over to the Black Pearl Reflexology & Spa – also located on the Ground floor, solely operated by the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.

Another amazing addition to the Club, is the Langkawi Yacht Club Hotel: 46 amazing rooms with sea view, hill view, courtyard, skylight, marina view cottage as well as the impressive 2,350 square feet presidential suite – ‘The Admiral’!

The windy Russian autumn weather might be a little bit tricky for sailing, but it doesn’t stop brave yachtsmen from all over the world from flocking to Russian capital in the beginning of September when the Moscow Yacht Show commences. The main Russian Yacht exhibition gathers professional and amateur yacht lovers together under the wing of The Royal Yacht Club.

This year it took place for a fourth time already. The exhibition is considered the principal event on the sporting and social calendar. The Moscow Yacht Show 2010 united in one area three of the largest Russian yachts distributors: Ultramarine, Nordmarine and Premium Yachts.

A wide range of yachts were on display for a week. An exhibition showcased yachts both from Russian manufacturers and world famous brands: Azimut, Princess, Ferretti, Pershing, Riviera, Doral, Linssen, etc.

It was a real feast for seafarers as visitors of the show had a unique chance not only to take a look at the newest superyachts before they hit the market, but also to evaluate their driving advantages during the test drive. The show provided an excellent opportunity for yacht enthusiasts to choose and buy a new boat for the next season.

The event started with the grandiose gala evening. It included grand dinner, the concert and professional awards ceremony for achievements in Russian yachting industry. The guests also enjoyed the annual regatta.

Special guest Paolo Vitelli, Azimut Benetti Group president, opened the evening.

Next year organizers assured guests they would bring more yachts, the scale of which will even make oligarch Roman Abramovich envious. Sounds very promising indeed.
