Bored Ape Yacht Club Is Getting Its Own Film Trilogy

How mainstream can an NFT brand get? A year after launching as a set of 10,000 NFTs, Bored Ape Yacht Club is going Hollywood with "The Degen Trilogy."

Is it possible for an NFT collection to become a true mainstream brand? The Bored Ape Yacht Club is trying. Almost exactly a year after launching as a set of 10,000 NFTs, it was announced by crypto exchange Coinbase that a trilogy of BAYC flicks would be coming. The first will debut in June, and will tie in to the long-awaited launch of Coinbase's NFT marketplace . 

The film series, produced by Coinbase, is being called "The Degen Trilogy." In crypto parlance , a "degen" is a common and often affectionate term used to describe someone who buys coins or NFTs without doing any meaningful research into what they're actually buying. The first part will debut at NFT NYC, a convention focused on the nonfungible tokens that takes place in New York every year, between June 20 and June 23.

"We have an incredible group of directors, writers, and animators behind this film," Coinbase says on the film's website. "We can't tell you who they are just yet, but you've seen what they've done before."

Created by Yuga Labs, BAYC has become the world's biggest NFT collection. Having launched for about $250 apiece, Bored Ape NFTs are now unattainable for less than $300,000. The NFTs act as status symbol items that the crypto-rich flaunt to peers on social media, much like how a chief executive may flex a new Rolex to clients and colleagues. Additionally, the NFTs act as memberships to a community of well-connected crypto and NFT traders: The allure of profiting through these connections is part of why people are willing to hold onto jpegs worth nearly half a million dollars. 

Owners of Bored Ape Yacht Club NFTs will be able to audition their apes to be in the series. Each Bored Ape NFT features different traits and accessories, and Coinbase is asking owners to create a backstory for their character to potentially appear in the films. If chosen, the owner of that NFT will receive a $10,000 licensing fee, paid in bitcoin or Yuga Labs' own ape coin. (Though Yuga Labs owns the BAYC brand, holders of the NFTs have licensing rights for the specific ape they own. This has led to holders beginning a band, and the authoring of a Bored Ape book by Neil Strauss.) 

There are 10,000 NFTs in the Bored Ape Yacht Club collection, each with different attributes it that place it on a scale of rarity. Here are three examples. The middle one is owned by Jimmy Fallon.

Already, BAYC has begun to transcend NFT culture. Celebrities like Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Steph Curry use Bored Apes as profile pictures on Twitter. Paris Hilton and Jimmy Fallon discussed their respective apes during a Tonight Show interview that, though widely mocked , was seen by around a million people. Brands like Adidas and Prada have partnered with it, and Rolling Stone released a special-edition magazine with a Bored Ape on the front. 

The big question is just how big an NFT brand can possibly get. A dozen or so celebrities buying into the Bored Ape Yacht Club is one thing. Getting hordes of people who are perplexed by NFTs to care about Bored Ape Yacht Club is a much bigger feat.

Yuga Labs is trying. In addition to expanding BAYC's "onchain" presence through the ape coin cryptocurrency that launched last month and the Otherside metaverse in which the coin will be used , attempts are being made to take BAYC "offchain." Yuga Labs has partnered with toy maker Superplastic to release Ape figurines, a pop-up burger shop was opened in California, and a BAYC mobile game is being developed with Animoca Games. 

Yuga Labs isn't the only one tinkering with taking NFTs mainstream, with Reese Witherspoon's media company Hello Sunshine working on a film and TV series based on the World of Women NFT collection . 

Equally enthusiastic about pushing the bounds of NFT culture is Coinbase, which will be producing the BAYC films. Coinbase has been a popular cryptocurrency exchange for years, and for the past six months has been hyping the launch of its own NFT marketplace to compete with OpenSea. The Degen Trilogy will tie into the eventual launch of that platform, as you'll need to have a Coinbase wallet to view the movies.

Things are heating up around the swamp as the bored ape yacht club announced that the first season of its hv-mtl forge game will begin on june 29th., after 30,000 hv-mtls came through the rift in space time and entered the swamp earlier this year, the bayc is forging ahead with its next video game featuring the mysterious mechs, “hv-mtl forge,” the bayc tweeted along with a 42-second teaser trailer this afternoon. “build. flex. fight. evolve. season 1 begins june 29th.”, in the video, bayc teased that hv-mtl holders will be able to build their hv's homes and showcased a lot of customization options for creators. from a traditional living room to an arena filled with toilets watching robots duke it out, there appears to be a wide range of customization available in the game., as the video continued, the bayc appeared to tease that players will have the chance to “flex” their forge and allow other hv-mtl holders to visit their homes, vote on the aesthetic, and move up the hv-mtl leaderboard.

Along with building the perfect Hv-home, the BAYC teased that players will be preparing for “ WHATEVER THE FUCK THIS IS.”

Following the BAYC’s teaser trailer, the club’s Co-Founder Garga took to Twitter and said that he’s looking forward to Forging with the community later this month and teased more information between now and June 29th.

Bored Ape owners can 'audition' their NFTs for a new film trilogy

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is going to Hollywood.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club is being turned into not just one movie but three, and popular crypto company Coinbase is making it happen. You know, the company that signed a $1.36 million deal with ICE last year?

The first movie in the trilogy (which will actually be more of a short than a feature, it seems) will premiere at the NFT.NYC conference in June. BAYC members showed up in full force at last year’s NFT.NYC — tacking the collective’s first movie premiere to the conference makes perfect sense, really.

What, exactly, the “Degen Trilogy” ( degen being short for “degenerate,” used to describe someone who buys crypto or NFTs without doing much research) will be about is still very unclear; the trilogy’s official website merely says “something is coming” and “probably nothing.” Logging into the site reveals just one tease: that the project is attached to “an incredible group of directors, writers, and animators.”

Bored Ape owners and non-owners alike can log into the site with a Coinbase Wallet address to access updates as the project progresses.

Crowdsourced to the fullest — There’s a good reason Yuga Labs — the company behind BAYC — hasn’t given the public any clues about the trilogy’s plot. Yuga is asking Bored Ape owners to submit their Apes, along with a backstory for each, to audition for roles in the trilogy. Yuga is promising that a professional Hollywood casting director will be reviewing submissions.

If an owner’s Ape is chosen to be in the film, they’ll receive a $10,000 licensing fee, paid out either in bitcoin or ApeCoin. Unlike most NFTs, Ape owners receive full licensing rights when they purchase a BAYC NFT.

And the money just keeps flowing — The Bored Ape Yacht Club is an outlier in the NFT community by just about any measure. In less than a year, the NFT collection has gone from just another tradable image collection to a full-on brand. BAYC owners are using their licensing rights to expand the collective’s reach as far as the restaurant industry . It’s entered the fashion world with an official Adidas collaboration . Celebrities like Madonna are buying them up. And now: movies.

The Bored Ape Yacht Club’s meteoric rise to fame hasn’t been without its bumps, though. Widespread allegations of racial insensitivity and connections to Nazism spread on social media earlier this year, casting doubt on the collective’s creators. ( Yuga Labs profusely denies these allegations.)
