Business name : Fayerweather Yacht Club

The place, Black Rock, a historic seaside area of Bridgeport, Connecticut. The time, June 1919. World War I had ended only seven months before. A group of sea loving buddies had been meeting next to the rock pile at the foot of Seabright Avenue when they decided it was high time to found a yacht club. After much deliberation, they decided to name the club in honor of Captain Fayerweather, a seafarer, who had been one of the early settlers of Black Rock. The charter members, Dick Terbeck, O. Bloomer, R. True, Paul Lang, John W. Bast and William J. Newton held their meetings by candlelight. When the candle burned down the meeting was over. An old shed near the rock pile served as the first club house. The rent, $15.00 a month, soon became a burden for so few members. It was decided to reopen the charter and solicit new members at the charter rate to help with finances. By 1936 the Fayerweather Yacht Club was prospering in a modest way. There were lockers in the shed and a meeting room upstairs. There was a float for tying up skiffs and a sandy beach where an old marine railway still led down to the water. The railway was a handy place for hauling boats. An old apple tree stood nearby affording welcome shade to the men who often gathered under its branches to talk about boats, fishing and events of the day. The old apple tree also served as a “Dead Man” to which tackle could be fastened for hauling boats up the marine railway on a bed of planks and rollers. In 1936, a crisis occurred. The owners of the club house raised the rent. At that point, the members tried to negotiate a purchase of the site but funds were lacking and the club wasn’t organized enough to undertake a major fund drive. Eventually the property was sold and the club was forced to find another location. A nearby property was located and purchased for $4500.00. Farseeing members created the Fayerweather Holding Corporation which controlled and sold the stock that made the purchase possible. The property and building thus acquired fronted directly on the harbor at the end of Brewster Street. The building, a Customs House in colonial times, had been converted into a charming private home but was now in disrepair. No plumbing or heat, only a central fireplace to ward off the cold. In addition, there were many small rooms. Extensive remodeling was needed in order to make it a suitable clubhouse. The improvements were made with money from fund raisers. By April 1938 an enclosed porch had been added to the south side and a locker room to the north. These changes occurred while Herbert Duncan served as Commodore from 1936 to 1943.

Walnut Creek Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, location and contact.

January is Lobster Month at the Walnut Creek Yacht Club. All month they serve, by reservation, your choice of grilled or boiled lobsters. They used to charge a price equal to the digits in the year, so in 2015 it was $20.15. They have since... moved to a flat $25.00, but for this you get the lobster, french fries, coleslaw, etc. And they used to have all 1.25lb lobsters. This year they were larger and some that we saw were much larger. When I asked the server about the disparity in the size he said that they just get a load of lobsters and don't really worry if one is 1.25 and one is 1.75. They are what they are! What they are is cooked really well and the sides are great. The service is always spot on and it is a pleasure to go out to eat at the Walnut Creek yacht Club - even when it's not Lobster Month. A birthday lunch with two family members, I had never heard of this place. Parking not too easy; I am disabled so was let off at the place, a handicap space not available. Arriving before noon we were easily seated and quickly attended. Two of... us chose the hot pepper pot soup, one got clam chowder. I liked it fairly well but the other later pronounced it his favorite of the meal. He also had fish tacos and half portion of salad. I chose mussels with garlic sauce and added Regatta fries to make it my French favorite. Should have asked if a half order was available...way too many! But good. Third member of our party had plantain with a seafood I have forgotten it was simple and slight but she enjoyed it. The restaurant became more and more filled as our meal progressed. Seems popular among local professionals. Conversation is possible despite the crowded atmosphere. There is a lively vibe. It is right on the corner of Bonanza and N. Main, has a tiny entry, personnel who are professionally courteous and interesting menu. I most likely will not return. Not really my style. More

Our group of five women friends decided to meet for lunch at this restaurant...and what a great place it turned out to be! It has a pleasant upscale and welcoming vibe. Since we went during "Lobster Month", each of us ordered the special meal that... included a whole Maine lobster (boiled or grilled) with lemon, melted butter, regatta fries and coleslaw. Everything was so delicious and all for just $25! The glass of Mai Tai I ordered paired well with the lobster. At the end of the feast, our friendly server offered us Loyalty Member cards which we plan to use on our next visit. Highly recommend this place if you like seafood! More

This is a great restaurant with fresh oysters, fresh seafood Kevin the chef owner is very dedicated always in the presence. His homemade soups are delicious. Happy hour is great, but be aware this place gets very busy and not easy to sit at the... bar. At happy hour they have a tremendous burger very tasty. Prices are reasonable with good service. You have a small parking lot in the back otherwise is street meter parking but beware parking meters in Walnut Creek are until late at night including weekends. The yacht club is closed on Sundays. There is a lunch and dinner menu. Kids are welcomed in the restaurant. More

My go to order for any seafood restaurant is fish and chips. To even begin to be rated above yuck, they must have coleslaw on the side. The Yacht Club exceeded expectations The fish was perfectly cooked, the chips were garlic fries ( which now... I wish more places served those), and the side of coleslaw exactly as I like it. My wife had the fish tacos and said they were amazing. The tortillas are corn and heated just enough to keep them strong. The inside looked quite crowded and noisy, so I recommend the outdoor area for a quiet dinner. More

Sat in the open air room. They could have decorated it inexpensively with a nautical theme, but no effort was made and it was totally devoid of any appeal. We were informed that we could not have two menus, no exceptions and the menu did... not have list of Beer or wine and the waitress did not know what wine or beer they bad. If we wanted to know we could get up and go outside for the qr code or go to their website. My husband and I have cell phones but are elderly and fund it difficult to read a menu on a small screen. Please assess your customers and at least try to politely accommodate. We left without ordering and went down the street to one of the other restaurants. More

The fish were delicious. I had the yellow fin tuna and others in my party had the salmon and crab sandwich. the polenta fires appetizer was also good. The service was very friendly. The only negative is the price which is very steep.

Best seafood ever ..truly! Started with shrimp cocktail..Great sauce with generous portion. Then CRAB cakes. Not crab bread like so many..but full of pure sweet crab meat and yummy sauce. Next the sweetest scallops lightly pan fried but still tender on a bed of arugula... and shredded radish. Lemon vinaigrette was devine. Stack sliced heirloom tomatoes underneath in a dill sauce if I recall. Sooo delicious. I had creme brulee which was great but REAL star was husbands nutty chunk of brownie in a sauce with ice cream! We will be back...and we live 2 hours away! Worthit52 More

Love going to the Yacht Club. Great full size menu with fresh options, as well as traditional fare. The environment is casual and comfortable with great service. Small bar area and it can get crowded are testaments to the regular following.

We had a large group and unfortunately they sat us outside in extreme heat, almost 100 degrees. But the staff found us a place inside eventually, and we all had good dinners. Nice menu with an emphasis on seafood. Very reasonable prices. The place cleared... out early on a Saturday evening. More

WCYC provides excellent food, (the freshest possible seafood!) excellent service, and a great wine list. I have been going to this restaurant for several years (as a local) and it's always reliable. I've never had a bad experience. Note: I don't think I would agree... though (as is noted on this site) that the atmosphere is "romantic". It's often full - a small restaurant, but not a quiet, intimate place. The outdoor shaded patio is my favorite spot to dine. More

Wife had petrale sole stuffed with hazelnut zucchini which she loved. I had my favorite sautéed scallops, delicious. The chowder was different but very good. Nice selection of raw bar goodies. Great variety of sauces and preparations. Server was very accommodating. If you're a fish... lover, don't miss it. More

Have not been here for many years. Except for the attentive staff, the atmosphere and food on the menu is unspectacular.

Three of us went to lunch on a Saturday. Two ordered the pre fix lunch of three items. Other ordered off the menu.had fish and chips plus cup of soup and cream brûlée dessert at $20.00. I received one small piece of breaded deep fried... fish and lots of French fries, cup of soup and tiny dessert. Others received very small portions except for one trout not. Cup of small clam chowder cost $9.00. Waiter repeatedly came to look at check he left with me. I assume he wanted to see how much of a tip I left him. Summary, food mediocre, overpriced with adequate service. Ambiance good, but exceedingly loud. I will not go back. More

It took 1.5 hours to get our meal. I am one that depend on reviews before making a selection for restaurants. Reason being is that I am new (Just moved here two weeks ago from this day) to California and I am unfamiliar with everything... here. As per another review site, this is listed as the #2 restaurant in Walnut Creek so I chose to take my fiancee here. As far as the decor and the ambiance great restaurant. Its cozy (not too small but not big) and comfortable with a professional crowd. Now our server *Brianne-not sure if I spelled that right) was fantastic!!!. Great attitude, always smiling and very knowledgeable. She was very patient and made recommendations just all out amazing person. After meeting her I was telling myself we picked a good restaurant. At the time we arrived (this is important) it was not busy at all and there were not a lot of people dining. With that said, it took us 45 minutes to get our APPETIZERS.......furthermore, the couple behind us received their entire meal in that time frame and our orders was taken about 4 minutes apart. I asked the manager for an explanation and he danced around it offering me the one appetizer free. I was not looking for a handout I make very good money and I don't need a handout, I wanted the problem fixed. He just smiled it off and left so that upset me. It took 40 min after we ordered just to get our APPETIZERS, and all we had was crab cake and soup. It took another 38 min after that to get our main course, and it came right at the point we was about to leave. Since the food was there, we didn't want it to go to waste so we stayed and ate. All this and people that entered the establishment after us received their food (appetizers and main course) way before us. I can't explain it, the manager had no explanation and our server felt so bad. She didn't know what to do she felt terrible and she blamed it on the kitchen. Everybody's experience is different and this review is not to tell you no to eat here as i'm sure your experience will be different as this was probably isolated but me personally will never eat here again. Price is not an issue with me as when we go out we want a nice meal and will pay top dollar but this place will never get my money again, what a nice welcome to California. Despite the unsympathetic manager, sub-par food and late food our server was still tipped very handsomely. More
