The Launch of Yacht Attessa IV – The Biggest in North American History:

As motor yacht ATTESSA IV nears completion she is to be launched in Canada by Washington Yachting Group (WYG) on the 5th of December 2010, or soon after, and officially unveiled in Vancouver.  When launched, the Attessa IV yacht will move into the world’s top 25 private superyachts by length, measuring 330 ft (or around 100.6 metres). She is now the largest superyacht to be (re) launched in North America, (*see below) being larger than Cakewalk. A very impressive ship, Attessa IV is also the 23rd longest private yacht in the world.

The refit and reconstruction of superyacht Attessa IV , now a sleek and elegant new yacht, is one of the most impressive refits and launches ever in the world and is a very proud moment for Canada and for all of those involved, including the team at WYG, the shipyard, the yacht designer Glade Johnson Design and team, the captain, and the yacht’s owner.

The refurbishment and rebuild has been a very large project and it has taken over 3 1/2 years to complete. There has been an extensive reconstruction and rebuilding involved, from the bottom up – a reconstruction of both her interior and exterior design, style and functionality. Essentially, the yacht is now is a new yacht, and in ‘as new’ condition. She is the first superyacht in the world to benefit from AkzoNobel core technology, an innovative new approach to applying a metallic finish.

Superyacht Attessa

Superyacht Attessa after the yacht's relaunch

The interior renovations has been comprehensive and is believed to have included the creation of a spa on the lower deck, as well as a new top deck which showcases a large Spa Pool pool and a wonderful hanging glass sculpture by artist Dale Chihuly. The superyacht Attessa IV also has a helipad on the her upper aft deck and forepeak (see the rendering yacht design above). The massive 5 level yacht displays curvaceous exterior lines, a deep blue hull, and an impressive exterior deck space for entertaining.

The original motor yacht was built at Hayashikane Zosen Kk in 1999 and called Evergreen and she was then purchased by the new owner back in 2007. Now, after a complete rebuild, the ATTESSA IV yacht is to be re launched in 2010 as an almost completely new motor yacht and measuring almost 30 feet longer.  She is scheduled to be launched in Vancouver around the date the 5th of December 2010 and has experienced some delays due to the scale of the undertaking and recent ice and snow.

Superyacht Attessa IV

Superyacht Attessa IV - The After Rendering

History of Yacht Attessa IV:

This luxury yacht was originally launched in 1999 as Evergreen, built for the chairman of the Taiwan-based Evergreen Corporation, at the company’s shipyard in Nagasaki, Japan. The exterior styling of Evergreen was designed by Diana Yacht Design with interior styling by Felix Buytendijk.

Purchased and renamed in 2007 by an American businessman yacht owner, M/Y Attessa IV entered into a period of rebuild in by Washington Yachting Group.  Glade Johnson Design is the company which was contracted responsible to create the boat’s new interior and exterior styling.

Awlgrip was involved in the refit and Yacht Attessa IV is the first superyacht in the world to benefit from AkzoNobel core technology. This a technology which is new in the Yacht and Aerospace arenas because the harsh sea and sky operating environment. The rebuild involved an innovative new approach to applying a metallic finish to a large areas on the yacht.

One of the major jobs undertaken for the extensive refit was the re-styling of the exterior superstructure. This was achieved by building on numerous sections to the vessel superstructure and then attaching many shaped composite panels. Both panels and extensions have been  faired (moulded and shaped by hand) using around gallons 40,000 litres (10,000 gallons) of Awlfair, an Awlgrip product. The project also incorporated Hullgard paint primers which are specially formulated to allow for over coating with subsequent primers or fillers without the need for labour intensive sanding, thereby reducing workload.

Captain Ted McCumber, of the Washington Yachting Group, is the Project Manager. Launched, superyacht Attessa IV enters a new chapter in her history and is easily capable of cruising the world’s oceans including the Pacific, America, the Mediterranean and Caribbean. She is a private yacht and has no plans, at present, to be available for yacht charters.

CharterWorld will bring you the latest news on the Attessa IV yacht and further images of her exterior and interior if they become public.

'Super yacht' with Vancouver connection involved in fatal collision at sea

A luxury superyacht rebuilt several years ago in North Vancouver for the billionaire owner of Washington Marine Group has been involved in a fatal collision at sea near to San Diego.

The collision happened off the west coast on the evening of Oct. 26, about 14 kilometres from San Diego near the United States-Mexico border.

Luxury super yacht Attessa IV, which was extensively renovated for billionaire industrialist Dennis Washington by Washington Yachting Group, is pictured near Lonsdale Quay in North Vancouver in 2011. photo Mike Wakefield, North Shore News

The U.S. Coast Guard received a call from the Attessa IV about 7:45 p.m. advising the 332-foot yacht had collided with a 65-foot sports fishing charter boat, Prowler, and that “Prowler sustained some pretty significant damage to its rear starboard quarter,” said Joel Guzman, public affairs spokesman for the San Diego Coast Guard station.

The Coast Guard launched a Jayhawk helicopter, 45-foot medium response boat and the Coast Guard cutter Sea Otter to the crash site and arrived on scene about 8:45 p.m. where 17 people from the sports fishing charter boat were taken on to the coast guard vessel. Three people were injured, including one man who had critical head injuries, said Guzman.

He was airlifted by helicopter to shore and taken to hospital.

The San Diego medical examiner’s office confirmed 66-year-old Richard Neff of San Clemente later died of those injuries.

Guzman said an investigation is now underway to determine why the ships collided, which includes speaking to everyone on board both vessels at the time of the crash. The investigation could take several months, said Guzman.

There is no word on who was among the 28 people on board the yacht at the time of the collision.

Records of ships’ movements show the Attessa IV left North Vancouver July 8 and travelled down the west coast arriving in San Diego Oct. 15.

The yacht left San Diego following the crash and is now in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Attessa IV, which is registered in the Cayman Islands, is one of the largest privately owned yachts in the world. It was bought in 2007 by Dennis Washington, a U.S. billionaire whose network of companies includes Washington Marine Group and Seaspan Shipyards in North Vancouver, where Kyle Washington, Dennis Washington’s son, is executive chairman.

The mega yacht was extensively rebuilt in a three-year project by Washington Yachting Group in North Vancouver, in the same shed where the three ill-fated Pacificat fast ferries were put together by shipyard workers in the 1990s.

The luxury yacht, which has been featured in a number of yachting and lifestyle magazine articles, features its own on-board helicopter and landing pad, spa, gym and pool, and opulent guest quarters including sculptures by Henry Moore and a hanging glass sculpture by Dale Chihuly.

What the US$600M 'world's biggest yacht' will look like inside

largest yacht in vancouver

It's set to be one of the largest private residence yachts in the world when it launches in 2024, but what does a luxury apartment on board the 728 foot (221 metres) Somnio actually look like?

Interior renderings of the US$600 million vessel have just been unveiled, offering a glimpse inside what's being described as the world's first "yacht liner."

While all 39 of the floating apartments, which come with a private balcony or terrace, are said to be "fully customizable," some of the options showcased include huge shell-shaped beds, expansive living areas with ocean views, and wall-length mirrors.

FLOATING HOMES

Prices start from around $11 million, with sizes ranging from 1,600 to 6,500 square feet -- the largest condo takes up most of the top deck.

Somnio, which means "to dream '' in Latin, was designed by Winch Design and Tillberg Design of Sweden, and will be built by Norwegian ship designer and builder VARD.

The interior renderings were devised by Winch Design, Tillberg Design of Sweden along with Luttenberger Design.

Those who snap up a condo on "the most exclusive address in the world" will get to work with one of the design teams for up to three months in order to "decide the room configurations and select the materials, furniture, lighting and artwork."

EXCLUSIVE ADDRESS

A gym, a library, inside and outside dining spaces, "distinct" dressing areas and a "vast living room space with 270-degree forward views" are among the options available, although the layout is to be based on the buyer's preferences.

The identity of the owners will be kept secret, but all residents will have access to full concierge services "for both onboard and land-based needs."

"As the only residential superyacht in the world, we are delighted to work with designers that complement our exacting standards," Captain Erik Bredhe, co-founder of Somnio, said in a statement.

"Our owners will experience only the best, as is befitting of a yacht of this nature."

SUSTAINABILITY FOCUS

According to its designers, sustainability will be a key focus for Somnio, which is to be constructed with the "latest clean engine technology" along with materials and products to "create environmentally responsible interior design with a reduced impact" where possible.

Among the shared on board amenities onboard available include a 10,000-bottle capacity wine cellar and tasting room along with a lounge located in the ship's bow, a spa, a movie theater, restaurants and a beach club.

Residents will be charged an annual fee to cover expenses like maintenance and repairs, along with fuel and food.

A spokesperson for the project tells CNN Travel that Somnio has attracted exceptional interest since it was unveiled earlier this year, with some apartments already sold.

At present, The World, which measures 643 feet, is the largest private residential yacht on the globe, with a combination of studios as well as one to three-bedroom apartments on board.

Christopher friesen, beth and dave o'connor - bellingham, w.a. | beneteau 36.7 owners.

We recently purchased our Beneteau 36.7 with the assistance of Brad Marchant.  Due to the COVID-19 situation, we were unable to view the boat prior to purchasing it.

Ralf and Helga Schmidtke | Fleming 65 Owners

Having decided after 30 years of sailing to change to power, the wide choice of brands made the selection task a daunting one. We wanted the most reliable, comfortable, safest, practical and best thought out boat that we could find. Attention to detail and quality was paramount, as was after purchase servicing. She also had to be an attractive boat that we could be proud of. After several months of extensive research, one name easily made it to the top.

Joel Nauss | 75’ President Yacht Owners

Craig and stacey | beneteau oceanis 31.1 owners.

Stacey and I both want to extend our gratitude for your help in acquiring "Margie." She is exactly what we were looking for, and the entire process was as seamless as you had described it would be. She did well on our trip from Anacortes to Kirkland.

Couple Found Dead in Lifeboat After Attempting to Cross the Atlantic: 'They Were Amazing People'

A couple who lived in Canada set off for the Azores in the Atlantic, but were found dead weeks later in a life raft floating near the coast of Halifax

A couple living in Canada has died after attempting to sail across the Atlantic.

According to a press release shared on July 12 by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, investigators responded to reports of human remains of two people found in a 10-foot inflatable boat, which had washed ashore at Sable Island National Park Reserve, a sandbar off the coast in Halifax.

On Monday, July 22, police shared an update , announcing the Nova Scotia Medical Examiner Service had officially identified one of the people as a 70-year-old man, and that investigators were confident the other remains belonged to woman a 54-year-old woman, both from British Columbia.

Multiple outlets, including The Guardian , CNN and the Vancouver Sun , identified them as Sarah Packwood, 54, and Brett Clibbery, 70.

According to police, the couple was first reported missing on June 18 after leaving the coast of Nova Scotia in their 42-foot yacht Theros the previous week.

The couple had set off for the Azores — a collection of Portuguese islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, about 2,000 miles away from where they started — and planned to embark on a 21-day trip. The Guardian reported that Clibbery’s GPS device was last detected about 40 miles southwest of Sable Island on June 13.

The life raft they were found in is believed to have belonged to their larger vessel, according to the Sun.

Clibbery's son James spoke out about his father and stepmother's death in a post shared to Facebook on July 13.

"They were amazing people, and there isn't anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far unexplained passing," he wrote. "Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed."

The Guardian previously profiled the couple and their relationship in 2020. According to the newspaper, the pair met in the U.K., where Packwood was originally from. Clibbery told her about his love for sailing and about Theros , where the pair would later get engaged and married. They moved to Canada together in 2018.

The couple also documented their travels on their YouTube channel — titled Theros Adventures — and said in April that they had modified the yacht themselves so that it would rely on sails, solar panels, batteries and a car engine.

“We’re doing everything we can to show that you can travel without burning fossil fuels,” Clibbery said in one video posted on April 12, per the Sun.

"It's probably the biggest adventure of our lives so far," Packwood added.

According to police, the couple's deaths are "not believed to be suspicious in nature" and an investigation is still under way to determine what may have happened to the Theros .

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police noted that "an update will be issued should the investigation uncover any criminality."
