Certainly, there’s a glamour and luxury to these floating mansions that can’t be paralleled, but it is the freedom that a yacht offers, to cast off from your everyday life to explore spectacular places in a spectacular way, that makes them truly special.

Just imagine yourself….

It’s night in the Maldives, and your yacht’s underwater lights have turned the sea a glowing blue. In the darkness you can hear a pod of dolphins squeaking and breathing heavily through their blowholes as they hunt fish around the yacht. You’re on deck drinking champagne and playing cards under the stars when one of your friends decides to swim with the dolphins. You soon hear him splashing about and dive in to join him, the water soft on your skin in the warm night air.

On the island nearby, there’s a barefoot bar serving cocktails in coconuts and crab racing going on under the waving palms. Soon you’ll go to bed, for tomorrow you’re off to another island far out in the Indian Ocean, to dive and snorkel and lie on deckchairs on the sands.

Or perhaps this is more your style…

In the New Zealand fjord lands, your superyacht edges close to a waterfall running off a glacier, and the air is suddenly a haze of fine cold spray and rainbows. The kids are playing in the water, their excited squeals bouncing off the cliffs. The captain then moves the yacht back down through the fjord, through a silent land of quiet snow capped mountains, mists and deep forest. Emerging out of the fjords into the open ocean you see colonies of sea lions floating on their backs, looking like they’re resting in giant armchairs in the sea. Off to the starboard side, the fin of an orca breaks the surface, tall and sleek and ominous. The water is like glass, the yacht’s reflection moving through the ripples as the boat heads further south, or west, across the Strait to the reefs and stunning archipelagos of Australia.

Looking for a Caribbean adventure? What about…

In St Barths, fireworks light up the sky to celebrate the New Year- hundreds of yachts across the bay sound their horns, a sound of haunting beauty, welcoming in another year. The next day, the captain weighs anchor at dawn and you wake up hours later floating through the lush peaks of sunken volcanoes. You dive off the swim platform into deep cool water shot with light, and snorkel over colourful reefs to a nearby beach, blinding white sands against sapphire sea.

The crew set up a luxury beach barbeque for you, a cow from a local village looks mournfully on. That night you’ll take the tender in to a sailor’s bar, where a reggae band plays, the jerk chicken is frying and the spiced rum flows freely. You dance on the soft sand in bare feet, the Caribbean Sea shining in the moonlight.

Or, finally, how about a visit to the superyacht mecca, the French Riviera?

Your yacht approaches the towering cliffs of Monaco, and you can hear the whine of the Grand Prix cars rise over the grand casinos and palaces of Monte Carlo. Just down the coast is the Cannes Film Festival, where you see celebrities walk the red carpet and directors strut about in tuxedos with white scarves draped artfully around their necks. You cruise slowly to Saint Tropez, where models and princes shower champagne in glamorous clubs, and beautiful sailboats race across the bay. When you’ve had enough of glamour and glitz, you explore the secluded bays and deep pine forests, the ancient fortress towns and cobbled streets. You walk along palm lined promenades with their grand art deco hotels and sail around the Cap d’Antibes, where immense villas look out across the bay of Angels and towards the snow-capped Alps.

Whether you want Riviera glamour or South Pacific splendour, chartering a superyacht is an experience like no other. On a yacht, you are truly free.

Once you confirm your reservation, your broker will process your payment.

• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is confirmed more than 7 days in advance, a deposit of either $1,000 USD or 50% of the total cost of the reservation (whichever is greater) is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 7 days away, the remainder of the amount due is processed.
• If you are booking for a single day and your reservation is made 7 days or less in advance, the total price of your reservation is processed immediately.
• If you are booking for a multi-day charter and your reservation is confirmed more than 30 days in advance, a deposit of 50% of the cost of the yacht is processed immediately in order to hold the yacht. Once your embarkation date is 30 days away, the other 50% is collected for the price of the yacht, plus the APA, plus the taxes due.

Terms of refunds are dictated by the Charter Agreement. Generally, once a payment is collected, it is non-refundable. In certain circumstances, as dictated by the Charter Agreement, credits can be provided so you will be able to enjoy your yacht charter at a future date that is convenient for you.

Luxury yachts and other myths: How Republican lawmakers echo Russian propaganda

Two senior Republican lawmakers, the chairs of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs committees, say their colleagues are echoing Russian state propaganda against Ukraine.

Researchers who study disinformation say Reps. Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and Michael McCaul, R-Texas, are merely acknowledging what has been clear for some time: Russian propaganda aimed at undermining U.S. and European support for Ukraine has steadily seeped into America’s political conversation over the past decade, taking on a life of its own.

McCaul, chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, told Puck News he thinks “Russian propaganda has made its way into the United States, unfortunately, and it’s infected a good chunk of my party’s base.”

Turner, chair of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, told CNN that anti-Ukraine messages from Russia are “being uttered on the House floor.”

For the past decade, since Russia’s first military incursion into Ukraine in 2014, Moscow has spread propaganda and disinformation in a bid to undercut U.S. and European military support for Ukraine, according to U.S. and Western officials.

Some of the arguments, distortions and falsehoods spread by Russia have taken root, mostly among right-wing pro-Trump outlets and Republican politicians, researchers say, including that Ukraine’s government is too corrupt to benefit from Western aid and that the Biden family has alleged corrupt ties to Ukraine.

Russia, in keeping with traditional propaganda techniques, seeks to make its case and tarnish Ukraine through a mixture of outright falsehoods, half-truths, inferences or simply amplifying and promoting arguments already being made by American or European commentators and politicians, researchers say.

The propaganda is sometimes spread covertly, through fake online accounts, or openly by Russian officials and state media. As a result, the origin of some allegations or criticisms is often opaque, especially when a certain accusation or perception has gained wide acceptance, leaving no clear fingerprints.

Early in the war, a false story boosted by Russian propaganda — that the U.S. had helped Ukraine build biological weapons labs — gained traction on right-wing social media and was touted by then-Fox News host Tucker Carlson.

Russia also is conducting a parallel propaganda campaign in Europe. Belgium’s prime minister said Thursday that his government is investigating alleged Russian bribes to members of the European Parliament as part of Moscow’s campaign to undermine support for Ukraine. Czech law enforcement officials last month alleged that a former pro-Russian member of Ukraine’s parliament, Viktor Medvedchuk, was behind a Prague-based Russian propaganda network designed to promote opposition to aiding Ukraine.

Here are some examples of Republican lawmakers using arguments often promoted by Russian propaganda:

Buying yachts

When Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with members of Congress behind closed doors in December to appeal for more U.S. help for his country’s troops, some lawmakers raised questions about Ukraine allegedly buying yachts with American aid money.

Zelenskyy made clear that was not the case, according to Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina, a strong supporter of arming Ukraine. “I think the notion of corruption came up because some have said we can’t do it, because people will buy yachts with the money,” Tillis told CNN. “[Zelenskyy] disabused people of those notions.”

Where did the yacht rumor come from?

Pro-Russian actors and websites promoted a narrative alleging Zelenskyy bought two superyachts with U.S. aid dollars. One Russia-based propaganda site, DC Weekly , published a story last November that included photos of two luxury yachts, called Lucky Me and My Legacy , which it alleged were bought for $75 million.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., a vocal opponent of military aid to Ukraine, in November retweeted a post about the alleged yacht purchase from the Strategic Culture Foundation, a Russian-based propaganda outlet directed by Russia’s intelligence services, according to the Treasury Department. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on the organization, accusing it of spreading disinformation and interfering in U.S. elections.

Another outspoken critic of aid to Ukraine, Republican Sen. J.D. Vance of Ohio, also made a similar claim.

In a December interview with former President Donald Trump’s White House adviser Steve Bannon, Vance claimed that members of Congress wanted to cut Social Security benefits to provide more aid to Ukraine, and that money would allegedly be used for Zelenskyy’s ministers to “buy a bigger yacht.”

“There are people who would cut Social Security, throw our grandparents into poverty. Why? So that one of Zelenskyy’s ministers can buy a bigger yacht?” Vance said. “Kiss my ass, Steve. It’s not happening.”

The tale of Zelenskyy’s luxury yacht, however, turned out to be totally false . The yachts cited in the DC Weekly article remain up for sale , the owners told The Associated Press.

Two academics at Clemson University, disinformation researchers Darren Linvill and Patrick Warren, found that DC Weekly ran numerous stories copied from other sites that were rewritten by artificial intelligence engines. The articles had bylines with fake names along with headshots copied from other online sites. DC Weekly appeared to be a Russian effort to launder false information through a seemingly legitimate news site as part of an attempt to undermine U.S. support for Ukraine, according to the researchers .

Asked by reporters about Vance’s comments, Tillis said: “I think it’s bullshit. ...If you’re talking about giving money to Ukrainian ministers — total and unmitigated bullshit.”

Greene’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

Vance’s spokesperson said the senator was making a rhetorical point about how he opposed sending U.S. assistance to what he sees as a corrupt country, but was not asserting the yacht stories online were accurate.

Vance’s office referred NBC News to an earlier response to the BBC on the same topic:

“For years, everyone in the West recognized that Ukraine was one of the most corrupt countries in the world. Somehow everyone forgot that just as we started sending them billions of dollars in foreign aid.”

Enabling ‘corruption’

Russian state media for years has painted Ukraine as deeply corrupt, and has argued that the U.S. and its allies are wasting money and military hardware by assisting such an allegedly corrupt government.

“This is absolutely a line that they have pushed, and then once it appears in the Western ecosystem, other [Russian] media picks it up and it gets recycled back,” said Bret Schafer, a senior fellow at the Alliance for Securing Democracy.

This line of argument has gained traction partly because Ukraine does face a genuine corruption problem.

Russia’s effort to focus attention on corruption in Ukraine reflects a long-established propaganda method of using facts or partial truths to anchor a broader assertion or accusation, sometimes making a leap in logic, Schafer and other researchers said. Russia’s message amounts to: Ukraine is corrupt, therefore U.S. and Western aid will be stolen and wasted.

Schafer said it was ironic for Russia, a country mired in corruption and kleptocracy, to be leveling accusations about corruption.

Republican Rep. Mary Miller has said she strongly opposes more assistance for Ukraine because it amounts to sending cash to “corrupt oligarchs.”

“With Zelensky coming to DC this week to ask for more money, I will continue to vote AGAINST sending your tax $$ to corrupt oligarchs in Ukraine for a proxy war that could have ended in ‘22,” Miller wrote in a post on X in December.

The Illinois lawmaker also echoed another assertion that often appears in Russian media, that the Biden administration allegedly undermined efforts by Russia to avoid war with Ukraine.

 “A peace deal was on the table that [Ukraine] and [Russia] were both ready to sign, but Biden said NO,” she wrote.

There was in fact no proposed peace agreement that Russia and Ukraine were prepared to sign before Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, according to U.S. and European officials. As Russian troops massed on the border of Ukraine, Western governments urged Russia not to invade and warned there would be economic and diplomatic consequences.

Reuters has reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected a possible deal to avert a war that had been discussed with Kyiv by Russia’s envoy to Ukraine. The Kremlin said the report was inaccurate and has said Russia tried for years to arrive at an understanding with Ukraine.

As for corruption in Ukraine, Zelenskyy has vowed to tackle the problem, sacking senior officials in some recent cases. But some civil society groups have criticized his approach and Ukrainians say corruption is the country’s second-most serious problem, after the Russian invasion, according to a poll conducted last year.

In an annual survey, Transparency International said Ukraine made progress toward addressing the issue and now ranks 104th out of 180 countries on its Corruption Perceptions Index , climbing 12 places up from its previous ranking.

Ukraine is not alone among countries that receive U.S. and other foreign aid but struggle with corruption. Supporters of assisting Ukraine argue it would undermine America’s influence in the world and its humanitarian efforts if Washington withheld foreign aid from every country where there were reports of corruption.

Miller’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

The Biden family and Ukraine

Republicans have repeatedly alleged that President Joe Biden and his son Hunter have corrupt ties to Ukraine, and that they sought $5 million in bribes from the Ukrainian energy company Burisma to protect the firm from an investigation by Ukraine’s prosecutor general.

There is no credible evidence for the allegations. A key source for the accusations against the Bidens is a former FBI informant, Alexander Smirnov, who was arrested in February on federal charges of fabricating the bribery claims. Smirnov says he was fed information by Russian intelligence.

Republicans had heavily promoted Smirnov’s allegations against the Bidens, seeing them as crucial to a planned impeachment effort against the president that has since fizzled .

“In my estimation, that is probably the clearest example of Russian propaganda working its way into the American political system,” said Emerson Brooking, a resident senior fellow at the Digital Forensic Research Lab of the Atlantic Council.

GOP Rep. Paul Gosar of Arizona cited the false bribery allegations in expressing his opposition to providing assistance to Ukraine.

“In exchange for … bribe money from Ukraine, Joe Biden has dished out over $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund the war in Ukraine. I will not assist this corruption by sending more money to the authoritarian Ukrainian regime,” Gosar said in a statement in October.

Gosar’s office did not respond to a request for comment.

'More than just luxury living': Rich UAE culture takes over Moscow, wows Russians

T he spirit of UAE took over the magnificent heart of Moscow at Manezh Square, last week. Russians could be seen sipping the traditional qahwa and applying henna at the pedestrian open space.

The square was filled with the colours of the UAE flag – red, white, black, and green – with a range of traditional Emirati activities from June 27 to July 2.

‘The Days of UAE Culture’, organised by the UAE Embassy and the Government of Moscow, drew in more than 300,000 attendees from different parts of Russia and Asian countries.

One of the highlights of the event was the Emirati wedding show, which captivated the audience by showcasing wedding traditions passed down through generations. The bride, wearing a traditional dress, was escorted by women to the groom's house where rituals were performed.

The 'Ayala' performance, a traditional dance where participants line up in two rows facing each other and dance and sing to the rhythm of tambourines and drums, captivated thousands of visitors, many of whom recorded it on their phones.

Niki Kozilov a resident of Moscow came along with his friends to witness the Emirati culture. “I had come to Dubai twice, I had never seen anything like the 'Ayala' dance before and did not experience the Emirati culture, which I regret now. The way the participants moved in sync with the rhythm of the instrument was mesmerising. My next trip to the Emirates will be solely dedicated to learning and experiencing the Emirati culture,” said Kozilov.

Visitors to the event also enjoyed performances by Emirati bands, a fashion show featuring Emirati music, and the opportunity to taste national treats and popular UAE dishes. “Whenever we browse about the UAE on the internet, all we see is the modern architecture, adventure, and luxury living. However, there is just more than that to it,” said Anastasia, a visitor to the event who came all the way from St Petersburg to experience the Emirati culture in Moscow.

“The Emirati culture is so rich. I always had plans to visit Dubai. But for some reason I couldn’t visit. After experiencing the Emirati culture here, I just don’t want to experience the luxury living but rather the rich tradition of the place,” said Anastasia.

The event provided an immersive cultural experience with activities such as temporary henna tattoos, craft displays, and a photo exhibition showcasing the stunning landscapes of the UAE.

Anya Petrova, an engineer at MTC Telecommunications, applied henna for the first time. “I always wanted to have a henna design on my hand. The first time I saw it was when my friend returned from India with a beautiful design. Since then, I have been waiting for an opportunity to get it done,” said Anya. “Finally, I got it, and it's beautiful. All the Russians are so enthusiastic about this that I had to wait for more than an hour in line to get it done.”

The event saw more than 40,000 attendees on the first evening alone, and by the end of the program, over 300,000 people had experienced the cultural offerings. The program is part of a larger cycle of events held on a reciprocal basis within the framework of bilateral interaction between Russia and the Cooperation Council for the Arab States (GCC).

“It will be part of a cycle of events held on a reciprocal basis within the framework of bilateral cooperation,” said Natalia Sergunina, Deputy Mayor of Moscow.

“Partnership relations between our countries are developing in many areas, including tourism. In 2023 alone, more than 42,000 travellers from the UAE visited Moscow—eight times more than the previous year. This trend continued in the first quarter of 2024—we are again recording growth,” said Sergunina.

In addition to cultural exchanges, the two countries are also actively fostering relations in the tourism sector. Travellers from the UAE do not need a visa to enter Russia, and in 2023, Moscow welcomed 42.2 thousand tourists from the UAE. As of early February, there were 150 flights a week from the Russian capital to Dubai, Abu Dhabi, and Sharjah.

How It Works

Sailing Experience Days: Nothing says romance like treating a loved one to a day on a luxury 53 foot yacht...except perhaps spending a couple of nights there too! With this fabulous yachting mini break, you'll get the chance to spend two days sailing on the Western Solent and English Channel, and spend the nights sleeping in your own private double cabin.

Everything about this experience is designed with relaxation and luxury in mind. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted to breakfast pastries before heading out on a 'get to know the boat' sail, and then enjoying dinner at one of Lymington's many pubs. You'll spend your first night in a private double cabin being gently rocked to sleep by the lapping waves and the sound of the water. Throughout your 2 days, and under the expert tuition of your friendly skipper and crew, you will have the chance to get hands on with every aspect of the sailing process - learn how to raise and trim the sails, get to grips with navigation techniques, and even take the helm! Or perhaps you'd rather just relax and take in the views as the wind whips through your hair? You'll have plenty of time on the water, so spend it however best suits you. Your journey could see you heading out to Isle of Wight for a spectacular view of the Needles, or sailing west along the Channel to Poole Harbour, and even the Jurassic Coast. Bring your swimwear as a break for lunch could also allow for a quick dip...if you're strong enough to brave the chilly waters! As the day's sailing draws to a close, you can watch the sun setting with your loved one before heading to your cabin for a restful night's sleep.

When can you book Lymington Spa Two Night Luxury Yacht Cruise

This experience runs generally from Mid-March to late October, (subject to availability).

Each day sail will set off around 9/9:30am and return for around 5/5:30pm. 

Saturdays during the summer months get booked up very quickly, so we advise to book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Water Requirements

The minimum age for this experience is 8, however all under 18s must be accompanied by an participating adult.

If you feel your height or weight may have an effect on your experience please give us a call.

Please Note: Meals are not included in the experience.

You will stop for lunch each day and will have the chance to visit a local pub for your evening meal so please bring spending money accordingly. If you'd like to have a picnic or barbecue for lunch you will need to bring the provisions with you.

The boat currently holds 4 double cabins that can cater for 8 people to stay overnight.

What to wear for this activity.

Please wear comfortable clothing and flat-soled shoes. Please also bring swimwear and bring anything you may require for your 2 night mini-break.

Participants should bear in mind that it can get windy out on the open water so you may wish to bring a wind-resistant jacket.

Buoyancy aids will be provided upon arrival.

The yacht includes 4 double cabins with ensuites, linen and duvets provided. There is also a TV, stereo, and cooking equipment available.

Is This Activity Weather Dependent?

This is an outdoor experience which may be affected by weather and water conditions. If your experience is cancelled due to adverse conditions, it will simply be rescheduled for an alternative date.

Port, helm, starboard… these were all sailing terminologies Willow and I were researching before we ventured to Lymington. As summer draws near, the sailing community are making sure their vessels are prepped and ready for what we hope to be a sunny few months! 

Russ and Andy, the owners of Sailing Spook, were kind enough to invite us on a sailing trip, allowing us to see first-hand what customers experience when they purchase a sailing gift. This was going to be their first sail of the year, and Willow’s first sailing trip, so everyone was excited for Friday 5th April to arrive. 

Prior to our trip, Russ advised us to wear flat shoes and plenty of layers, as let’s not forget it’s still only April! We were also given the meeting point of the Haven Bar and Restaurant. On the morning of the sail, Willow and I drove to Lymington Yacht Haven . After a pleasant journey, we drove into the marina and straight away we could see a two-story building: the Haven Bar and Restaurant. We were lucky enough to find a parking spot right outside, and walked up the stairs to the entrance, excited to meet the team. As we walked in, we were greeting by two friendly faces. Jonathan (nicknamed JB) and Alan were sat on stools near a roaring fire. These were the other crew members who’d be joining us on our sailing trip! Shortly after we had sat down, Russ and Andy arrived, and we discussed the itinerary for the day over a hot cup of coffee. Every trip can be different according to the weather, but with their impressive weather prediction apps we could plan our day to avoid the rain.  

Next, it was time to walk down to the yacht! Yes, you read that correctly. The sailing experiences take place on a luxurious 53-foot yacht , aptly named Sailing Spook 2. We boarded the boat and were welcomed by Erica, Andy’s cousin who was also sailing with us. We were then shown to the lower deck and given a tour of the living quarters, consisting of 4 double en suite bedrooms , a kitchen and seating area. I was surprised at how spacious and cosy this was. Willow and I filled in a short health and safety form, and were offered some Sailing Spook gear to keep us extra warm. This was music to my ears, as I had regrettably only worn thin leggings. With our new trousers, jackets and hats, we were ready to brace the wind, but not before the most important piece of clothing... our life jackets. My initial thought was a big, orange life jacket that gets in the way, but this wasn’t the case. They were small enough that you didn’t know you were wearing one, but technical enough that sensors inside would register if you were in water and automatically inflate. 

Looking like experienced sailors, we walked up to the main deck and watched Andy sail us out of the marina and onto the Solent. The sight of all the boats was one of a postcard. Russ mentioned that the majority of these magnificent boats would only sail twice: once when they are brought into the marina, and once when they are sold and leave the marina. A big part of this is due to the expense. Sailing Spook 2 on the other hand sails more than 160 times a year, simply due to the popularity of these experiences. As we left Lymington, and sailed down the river, Russ explained to us the identification of the channel markers, the red ones being on the starboard side (right) and the green markers being on the port side (left). As we headed towards Yarmouth, we enjoyed Russ’ commentary on the local landmarks, which included Hurst Castle and Brian May’s white mansion, fit for a Queen (get it)!

There is a sheltered area on the deck, which was perfect for keeping out of the wind. As we sat and enjoyed our complimentary chocolate bars, Andy asked if I wanted to have a go at the helm! I excitedly jumped up and took hold of the steering wheel. There was a second steering wheel next to my one so Andy could take control if he needed to. I am proud to say this wasn’t needed – phew! Russ gave me the compass heading to follow and I happily controlled our direction, understanding the delay in steering. To test my ability even further, Andy asked me to steer upwind until the main sail was flapping. This was called ‘luffing up.’ I then had to get the yacht back on track, working with the wind instead of against it. Willow was up next, and did equally as great at the helm. Russ, Andy and Erica were a great team, and often asked if anyone wanted to help with the sailing of the boat before we set sail back to Lymington Yacht Haven for some lunch. 

Once the yacht was securely moored, we headed for some well-deserved food where Russ had reserved us a table. The seaside themed restaurant had a lively atmosphere and the service was friendly and attentive. Willow and I both decided on the lunch special of a fish finger sandwich with salad and fries (definitely recommended)! As well as the lunch menu, there was the all-day menu, from which Alan ordered the yellow Thai fish curry. This looked incredible! JB ordered the mushroom risotto. Sadly, the time came to drive back to Brighton in an attempt to beat rush hour traffic. We had a brilliant time, and would like to say a huge thank you to Sailing Spook’s Russ and Andy for inviting us on a sailing taster day .

Many in the West will be annoyed by the sight of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi shaking hands with Russian President Vladimir Putin, but they should remember the shadow of China’s leader, says this researcher.

NEW DELHI: Indian foreign policy is playing at a consistent tempo. Just four days after being sworn in for a third term last month, India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Italy attending the outreach session of the G7 summit, reinforcing chummy ties with its partners in the West.

You might ask what is new here? Delhi has been expanding cooperation with its Western partners for two decades now. However, the significance of Modi’s presence in picturesque Apulia stands in stark contrast to him skipping the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Astana, scheduled to be held this week. India’s Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar will instead be filling in for Modi in a summit overshadowed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

India’s hesitancy to participate in the SCO at the top-level stems from its China conundrum. In recent years, Moscow’s  growing dependence on Beijing and Xi’s foreign policy assertiveness has made China the key fulcrum in SCO manoeuvres. India is circumspect about this.

With Modi’s absence, Delhi is telling its Chinese interlocutors that relations are under severe strain. Unless the Chinese roll back their aggressive posture in the Himalayas, the space for engagement between the two Asian neighbours is scarce. The SCO has a distinct security sentiment around it - unlike BRICS, which also includes Russia, China and India, but carries more of an economic ring .

STRATEGY, NOT CHEAP OIL

Media reports suggest that Modi will visit Russia in the second week of July. This trip will rankle many Western observers. Since the Ukraine war began, India’s purchase of cheap oil from Russia has been seen as profiting from troubles in the heart of Europe.

There is no doubt that India’s unallied position on Ukraine, along with US-led sanctions against Russia, has prompted Moscow to sell oil at cheaper rates to India. Delhi has consistently held an ambivalent position on the Ukraine conflict in calling for “dialogue and diplomacy”.

But this goes to strategy, not cheap oil. To paraphrase Jaishankar, the reason for the time-tested stability in India-Russia ties is to maintain a continental balance in the Eurasian heartland. That is, to balance China. Or to put it another way, don’t go around making new adversaries when there are already two open fronts - China and Pakistan.

India’s arms dependence on the erstwhile Soviet Union began in part due to mutual concern about China in both capitals during the 1960s and 70s. From Moscow’s perspective, tensions with Europe have compelled it to turn towards Asia. Keeping India close signals to China that it has other friends, too. It also shows the West that Russia enjoys the support of key emerging powers.

Remember this when Modi shakes Putin’s hand in Moscow. There are different degrees in India’s multi-alignment. Make no mistake - the United States and its allies are more consequential for India’s future than its relationship with Russia. But India’s ties with Moscow are a product of the past and to stave off a potential future, too.
