The Birth of Motorboating

Dorothy Levitt Napier powerboat

Adding a motor to a boat is said to have started in the late 1700s when Scottish inventor James Watt, often erroneously credited with the invention of the steam engine, placed one such engine in a boat in Birmingham, England.

Many steam-powered boats followed, some using a screw-type propeller to create motion as Watt did but most utilizing paddlewheels.

Except for recent developments in battery-electric power, pleasure boating has relied upon the internal combustion engine (ICE) as the source of power. There are many interesting iterations of the ICE and we will ignore some of them such as the gas turbine engine and rocket engines as their contribution to the sport, although most fascinating indeed, has been minimal.

The development of the ICE came bit by bit starting in the late 1700s. French engineers are credited with installing a prototype of their ICE in a boat around 1800-1810. There is little information available about that boat, the engine, or its inventors. Aside from an American patent for a turpentine-fueled ICE in 1826 which never went into production, it seems there was little other reported progress during the balance of that century.

Then in 1886, German inventors Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach installed their one-cylinder, petroleum-derivative powered ICE into an open double-ender skiff-type boat on a lake near Stuttgart. This roughly half-litre displacement engine weighed almost 60 kilograms (roughly 133 lbs) and developed a little over one horsepower at around 700 RPM.

The boat, named Rems , had been commissioned from the German shipyard of Friedrich Lursson , a yard that would eventually become today’s Lursson Yachts . Rems would be remembered and credited as the first motorboat, even if indeed it had not exactly been the first.

1886 Lurssen Yachts 'Rems'

It seems that the first sizeable production of motorboats was by Priestman Brothers of England which tested its first ICE-powered boat in 1888. Priestman IC engines utilized kerosene and a high-voltage spark-type ignition system patented by Karl Benz in 1888. Many of Priestman’s boats were used commercially to move goods on England’s canal system.

Frederick Lanchester of England had by 1897 developed a new ICE design with an innovative wick-fed carburetor utilizing benzene in a boat with a reversible propeller. This engine received much praise as being “high-revving” while attaining the unimaginable peak of 800 RPM. Many Lanchester boats were used as ferries on the Thames River and elsewhere.

Both pleasure and commercial motorboating was growing exponentially into the turn of the 20th century, both in Europe and America. And of course, where there are motors, there are those wanting to race and claim victory. In 1903, the Marine Motor Association was started in England, followed months later in the United States by the American Power Boat Association (APBA), both with the objective to create rules for boat racing by delineating classes of boats and engines.

motorboating meaning origin

Also in 1903, Mr. Alfred Harmsworth donated the Harmsworth Cup for international powerboat competition. There were few rules, but the boat and engine had to be designed and built in the country being represented. The first race for the Harmsworth Cup was won by the 40-foot Napier I , designed and built as a race boat by Napier and Company of England and driven by Dorothy Levitt. The hull was steel and the four-cylinder Napier engine developed 66 horsepower -- providing a top speed of 21 mph, thus setting the world’s first speed record.

One year later, in 1904, APBA created The Challenge Cup which has been known since as the Gold Cup. The first race, on the Hudson River in New York, was won by the nearly 60-foot-long Standard having an average speed of less than 25 mph from its 110-horsepower Standard engine. Boat racing was forever changed in 1911 when the Gold Cup was won by a hydroplane design, which of course was a planing hull as opposed to the displacement hull designs up until that time.

Standard winner of the First Gold Cup in 1904

It was John L. Hacker who had earned accreditation as a marine designer at age 22 and focused his efforts on making boats go faster. Five years later, in 1904, his revolutionary Au Revoir with a shallow V-bottom design as opposed to a round bottom, set the record as the world’s fastest boat. Then in 1908, he purchased the Detroit Launch and Power Company and changed its name to the Hacker Boat Company .

In 1911, Hacker designed and built Kitty Hawk , the first stepped-hull hydroplane design which not only won the APBA Gold Cup that year but set an unthinkable world speed record over 50 mph. It held the record of the world’s fastest boat from 1911 to 1915. Top speed and average speeds rose almost yearly for both Harmsworth and Gold Cup events right into the 21st century.

John L. Hacker’s Kitty Hawk, World’s Fastest Boat 1911-1915

There are a couple of interesting notes, however. America first won England’s Harmsworth Cup in 1907, and then every year from 1920 to 1933 mostly by the indomitable Gar Wood who later owned Chris-Craft Boats . Meanwhile, Chris Smith had built his first Chris-Craft race boat in 1905 achieving an ultra-impressive speed of 25 mph. Chris-Craft went on to win the Gold Cup for eight consecutive years. Much later, the Canadian owned, designed, and built hydroplane, Miss Supertest III entered only four races before it was retired, but it won all four races – the 1959 Detroit Memorial Regatta, and the 1959, 1960, and 1961 Harmsworth Cup races.

motorboating meaning origin

The Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) was established in 1922 in Belgium and headquartered in Monaco -- an emerging and now constant hotbed of powerboat racing. To this day, UIM is the overall governing body for all powerboat racing in the world. Regional associations such as the APBA in America and the Canadian Boating Federation (CBF) utilize UIM standards and categories for racing and for verifying world records and championships.

But, back to the progress in recreational powerboating. German engineer Rudolf Diesel invented the diesel engine in 1893. By 1903, Diesel had perfected the four-stroke compression-ignition internal combustion diesel engine. The first engine produced 25 horsepower and was an immediate commercial success. Diesel is still the choice of power for commercial shipping and larger pleasure yachts over 40 feet. In the modern era it has been “cleaned” up and lightened up to be installed inboard in smaller pleasure boats and, most recently, as the powerhead in several brands of outboard motors .

That detail provides an interesting segue. Up until 1900, the ICE delivered its power, except for paddlewheels, by means of a screw-type propeller on the end of a shaft colloquially called a propshaft. This propshaft would extend from the inboard-mounted engine on a slight downward angle and protrude through the bottom of the boat near the stern. Aft of the propeller was the rudder. There were two configurations based on the placement of the engine in the boat: the straight drive inboard and the V-drive inboard.

These two configurations were the power arrangement of choice for almost all pleasure boats. But, such an arrangement in small boats, punts, and skiffs was too expensive for the average family. Thus, powered pleasure boating was only within the realm of the rich. This changed with the invention and commercialization of the outboard motor . Credit for the development of the first outboard motor is very sketchy. It may have been Gustave Trouve in France in 1881, or it may have been later in America by the American Motor Company of Long Island, New York.

Then in 1903, American Cameron Waterman connected an air-cooled motorcycle engine to a propeller by means of sprockets. Patented and put into production in 1906 and redesigned to be water-cooled in 1907, some 3000 Waterman Porto outboard motors were sold. This is credited as the first commercially successful outboard motor.

With this development, outboard motors became accessible to the average family. They also became commercially viable and mechanically reliable in North America, and shortly thereafter throughout the world when engine tinkerer Ole Evinrude patented his 1.5 horsepower outboard motor in 1909 from his shop in Milwaukee. Good marketing from his wife Bess and a good product saw sales grow exponentially year over year.

Poor health forced Evinrude to sell out in 1913, but he kept inventing. In 1919, unable to use his own name on the motor, he established the Elto (Evinrude Light Twin Outboard) Motor Company in Milwaukee to produce a light weight twin-cylinder, 3-horsepower outboard motor. It quickly outsold local competitors Evinrude and Johnson. But Johnson, which had introduced diecast aluminum production, kept developing increasingly bigger horsepower motors to satisfy the growing need for speed. It soon began to outsell both Evinrude and Elto. The horsepower game had begun. The Johnson 6-horsepower Big Twin of 1926 set a world outboard speed record of 23 mph. Over the years, many new outboard motor brands became available.

Several decades later came the almost literal combination of both inboard and outboard power delivery. Jim Wynne was an American marine engineer, boat designer, a perfecter of the deep-vee hull design, and one of the first offshore racers. As a racer, he was able to see the advantages and disadvantages of both outboard and inboard powered boats. In his garage in his spare time, he set about trying to marry the best parts of the two concepts. Wynne created, tested, and patented the marine sterndrive, also known as the inboard-outboard.

Volvo Penta quickly purchased the rights to its manufacture from Wynne and introduced the Aquamatic Sterndrive to worldwide acclaim at the 1959 New York Boat Show. It combined the benefits of both the inboard and outboard propulsion units in one package -- a higher horsepower engine located inside the boat protected from the elements, and a steerable and trimmable propeller unit (the outdrive) located outside the boat.

The post-WWII economic boom gave a huge boost to the pleasure boat industry worldwide. The sizes and styles of boats, the methods and materials of manufacture, and the available niche marketing to satisfy the growing demand was huge. Nonetheless, shallow water was still the Achilles heel of the propeller.

To solve this, Keenan Hanley of Prospect, Ohio designed a waterjet -- basically a centrifugal pump which would take water in one end and expel it out the other end at a greater speed. He established Hanley Hydrojet and partnered with Kermath Manufacturing of Detroit to adapt it for pleasure boat use. The Hanley-Kermath Hydro-Jet coupled to an inboard engine and protruding only slightly below the hull was installed on a 17-foot runabout and hit the 1953 boat show circuit. It didn’t cause much excitement.

By 1954, Sir William Hamilton of New Zealand had been tinkering with the water jet idea. He modified the Hanley design to expel the water stream through a steerable nozzle above the waterline, thus removing any part of the waterjet from below the hull. This became the first Hamilton Waterjet. Hamilton Jet, along with several other water jet makers, have since grown and expanded to provide water jets to almost every sector of both pleasure boating and commercial shipping.

Other methods of delivering the power to the water include surface drives, perhaps the most notable one being the Arneson Surface Drive. There are other makers of surface drives too. One recent drive development in pleasure boats is the pod drive.

This article has only scratched the surface of the development of a huge industry, but suffice it to say that powerboating has come a long way since Daimler and Maybach first installed an ICE in a boat. #culture #innovatorsinboating

What is the meaning of the term 'motorboating' and what is its origin?

Bot image for Web-Search

The term "motorboating" has two distinct meanings.

The first meaning refers to the activity of traveling in a motorboat [2] . This is the literal definition of the term and is commonly used in the context of recreational boating or water sports.

The second meaning, which is more commonly known as slang, refers to a sexual act. It involves placing one's face between a woman's breasts and making a noise like a motorboat by rapidly moving one's head from side to side [1] [2] . This slang term is often used humorously or in a playful manner.

Origin: The origin of the term "motorboating" in the context of the sexual act is not well-documented. However, it is believed to have emerged as a slang term in popular culture, possibly in the late 20th century or early 21st century. The act itself is a playful and humorous gesture, and the term likely originated as a way to describe the sound and motion made during the act, which resembles the noise and movement of a motorboat.

The incredible hidden meaning behind Lamine Yamal's goal celebration in Spain's win over France

The incredible hidden meaning behind Lamine Yamal's goal celebration in Spain's win over France

There is a unique story behind lamine yamal's goal celebration..

Alex Brotherton

Alex Brotherton

Lamine Yamal performed a celebration with an incredible meaning after he scored for Spain against France.

On Tuesday Spain beat France 2-1 in the Euro 2024 semi-finals, booking their place in a major tournament final for the first time since 2012.

Spain went into the clash as the favourites, but they suffered an early set-back when Randal Kolo Muani headed France ahead after nine minutes.

That seemed to jolt Luis de la Fuente's side into life, and they equalised 12 minutes later when Lamine Yamal curled a sumptuous strike into the top corner off the post.

Dani Olmo, starting in place of the injured Pedri, put Spain ahead a few minutes later with France unable not muster a reply.

16-year-old sensation Yamal was rightly named player of the match, not just because of his goal but also his relentless running and trickery on the right flank.

What might have gone unnoticed though was the celebration he performed after scoring and the incredible story behind it.

As he does after every goal he scores, Yamal made a hand gestured showing the numbers '304', the post code number of Rocafonda, the working class neighbourhood he grew up in in Catalonia.

He does this as a dig at the Spanish far-right political party Vox, who have previously described Rocafonda as a "multicultural dunghill."

Despite only being 16, Yamal has already been subject to racism.

According to Diario Red, Yamal regularly received abused while playing in minor categories. When he appeared in a video with teammates wearing a Morocco shirt, far-right figures were up in arms.

Earlier this year, Spanish commentator was sacked for a racist slur he made about Yamal live on air.

Yamal's father, Mounir, was recently fined €600 for throwing eggs at a Vox campaign tent in Rocafonda while shouting "fascists" and "racists."

In court he said: "I had my motives. I am a human being. On that day my son was travelling with the Spanish national team to represent this country and these racists came [to our neighbourhood] and stood next to a school where there are people of all kinds of races."

Yamal and his Spain teammates will take on either England or the Netherlands in the final of Euro 2024 on Sunday.

Heavy rain, thunderstorm, tornado risk: What Beryl remnants could mean for Rochester

motorboating meaning origin

The Rochester area could see some wet and windy conditions on Wednesday, with the remnants of post-tropical cyclone Beryl entering early in the morning. Those remnants will bring a slight risk of flash flooding, damaging winds and tornadoes to much of upstate New York and across the New England region, according to the National Weather Service.

Rainfall totals for the storm are expected to be in the 1-2 inch range through Thursday.

The main hazards of the storm system are damaging winds, though the possibility of a tornado “cannot be ruled out,” according to the National Weather Service in Buffalo .

What is a slight risk of thunderstorms?

What a “slight” risk means varies based on what outlook is being considered, though all are the chances of the event occurring within 25 miles of any given point.

For instance, there is a slight chance of excessive rainfall in the Rochester area on Wednesday, which means there’s at least a 15% chance of rainfall exceeding flash flood guidance . “Slight” is the second lowest risk identified by the NOAA’s Weather Prediction Center and Storm Prediction Center; the lowest is “marginal” and the most severe are “moderate” and “high,” respectively.

There is also a slight risk for severe thunderstorms in central and southern New York, with Rochester right at the edge of the area between slight and marginal risk. Rochester is similarly on the edge of the tornado risk map between the 2% and 5% bands; and on the edge of the 5% and 15% risk of damaging thunderstorm winds or wind gusts of 50 knots (roughly 58 mph) or greater.

The risk of tornado formation in upstate is a result of triple point — where the cold, warm and occluded fronts meet — being located over southwestern New York and the Finger Lakes area. An occluded front is created when a cold front overtakes a warm front, creating a composite front.

Hazardous weather outlook

The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued a hazardous weather outlook for western and north central New York due to the Beryl remnants. While a soaking rainfall of 1-2 inches will come to most locations, the outlook said, some localized areas could receive heavier rainfall capable of causing flooding. Where those areas will be remains uncertain.

Radar: Weather in Rochester and surrounding areas

Beryl earliest major hurricane in history.

Beryl was the first hurricane of the Atlantic season and the first Category 4 hurricane to form in June.

The rapid increase in intensity of the storm, which went from a tropical depression to a hurricane in just 24 hours, is something seen more often in recent years, and is expected to become more frequent due to human-caused climate change, according to NOAA.

Beryl became the earliest Category Five hurricane to form in the Atlantic and just the second in July, beating the previous mark set by Hurricane Emily in 2005.

This is incredibly early for such strong storms, as major hurricanes (Category 3 and stronger) have an average formation date of Sept. 1, according to the National Hurricane Center. The average formation date for the first hurricane in the Atlantic is typically Aug. 11, based on data from 1991 to 2020.

Those actual dates vary season to season, but Beryl was formed far earlier than the typical marks.

Iranian reformist wins presidency, seeks engagement with the West

Iran’s new president Masoud Pezeshkian campaigned on modest social reforms and talks with the United States over the country’s nuclear program.

motorboating meaning origin

A little-known reformist and cardiac surgeon, Masoud Pezeshkian, defeated his ultraconservative rival to become the next president of Iran, campaigning on more social freedoms and engagement with the West and describing his victory as the start of “a new chapter” for the country.

In a speech Saturday, Pezeshkian, 69, vowed to be a leader for “all Iranians” and said the government must be held accountable and “move forward with reforms.” He also acknowledged widespread public apathy — voter turnout was only 50 percent — and said he hopes to bring Iranians relief from U.S. sanctions and the threat of war.

“I have come… to seek lasting peace and tranquility and cooperation in the region, as well as dialogue and constructive interaction with the world,” Pezeshkian said from Tehran at the mausoleum of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, the leader of Iran’s Islamic Revolution in 1979.

The candidate, a lawmaker from Tabriz, was one of six contenders approved by Iran’s influential Guardian Council to run for the presidency after Ebrahim Raisi, who was elected in 2021, died in a helicopter crash in May.

Pezeshkian won the most votes in a first round on June 28, but failed to secure more than 50 percent, sending the election to a runoff Friday between him and prominent hard-liner Saeed Jalili.

Early Saturday, state news media announced that Pezeshkian had received 16.3 million votes, with Jalili trailing at about 13.5 million, a sign that the reformist mobilized much broader support.

Before sunrise in some parts of Tehran and Tabriz, people took to the streets to dance, play music, and sound their car horns, according to videos on social media and local news outlets.

But while Pezeshkian’s supporters hailed his victory as an opportunity for Iran to end its isolation, he will assume office with limited powers and at a time of heightened tension with Israel over the war in Gaza .

Here’s what to know about Iran’s new president, and the challenges he faces.

Promises of reform

A veteran of the Iran-Iraq war who served in parliament and as Iran’s health minister, Pezeshkian has pushed for moderate reform but without challenging the country’s system of theocratic rule under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader.

He has pledged to bridge what he described as the “gap” in Iran between the people and the government. “I will do everything possible to look at those who were not seen by the powerful and whose voices are not heard. We will make poverty, discrimination, war, lies and corruption disappear from this country,” he said at a rally this week.

While campaigning for president, he advocated for loosening some social restrictions, including removing blanket internet restrictions and ending the enforcement of Iran’s mandatory dress code for women.

He said he also supports greater transparency in the banking and financial sectors, including implementing measures that would allow Iran’s removal from a blacklist maintained by the Financial Action Task Force, a global watchdog for money laundering and terrorist financing.

On the foreign policy front, Pezeshkian has emphasized negotiations with the West, including the United States. He said he wants to revive talks around sanctions relief for Iran and to court foreign investment to boost the ailing economy.

Iran under president-elect Pezeshkian “is more unified, resolute, and prepared than ever to tackle its challenges, strengthen its relationships with neighboring countries, and reassert its role in the emerging global order,” Mohammad Javad Zarif, Iran’s former foreign minister, posted to X on Saturday .

Zarif helped negotiate Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal with world powers. President Donald Trump later scrapped the agreement, which curbed Iran’s atomic energy program in exchange for widespread sanctions relief.

“The world must listen and engage with us in mutual respect, equal footing and recognition of Iran’s role in the world,” Zarif said.

A limited mandate

Pezeshkian’s surprise victory Saturday showed that he was able to expand his base of support, pulling from both the reformist and more moderate conservative ranks, said Mehrzad Boroujerdi, an Iran analyst and dean at Missouri University of Science and Technology.

He said the reformist’s win was probably aided by an “intense” dislike of Jalili among moderate voters. For many, Jalili, who wanted to strengthen ties with Russia and keep a hostile stance toward the West, “came across as a rigid ideologue of yesteryear,” he said.

Jalili issued a congratulatory note to Pezeshkian on Saturday, conceding defeat and vowing to aid the incoming president in the common goal of “elevating” the Islamic republic.

Still, Iran’s hard-line conservatives, who dominate most branches of the governing system, might frustrate the plans Pezeshkian set out during his campaign.

“The conservatives will try to create obstacles from Day 1,” Boroujerdi said. “He won’t have much of a honeymoon. … They will apply the brakes to whatever Pezeshkian will try to do.”

Khamenei also issued a statement promoting unity. “It is time for competitive election-related behaviors to turn into the morals of companionship” he said.

At the same time, low voter turnout and widespread public apathy weakened Pezeshkian’s mandate.

In his speech Saturday, the president-elect addressed voters who did not participate. “It is time for dialogue in Iran. The government should know what you are saying and why you did not come” to the polls, he said.

Earlier this week, Khamenei also remarked on the lack of voter participation.

“If the people demonstrate better participation in the elections, the Islamic Republic system will be able to achieve its words, intentions, and goals both within the country and also in the broader strategic expectations of the country,” Khamenei said, according to a summary of the remarks posted to X on Wednesday.

Iran’s clerical rulers see high turnout as key to their legitimacy at a time when they are facing domestic and regional crises.

Crises at home and abroad

Across the Middle East — from Gaza to Lebanon and Yemen — armed groups allied with Iran are attacking Israel and its backers, threatening American military bases and disrupting global shipping lanes. In April, after an Israeli attack on an Iranian diplomatic building in Damascus, Syria, Tehran launched its first direct military attack on Israel, bringing a years-long shadow war into the open.

At home, many Iranians are still reeling from the brutal government crackdown on nationwide protests that erupted in 2022, following the death of Mahsa Amini, a young Kurdish woman, in the custody of the widely reviled “morality police.”

In the uprising’s aftermath, the regime doubled down , sentencing some protesters to death and increasing penalties for women who disobey its strict dress codes.

Amid simmering social unrest and a deepening economic crisis, the presidential campaign featured some rare acknowledgment of the challenges faced by the country’s ruling class — a sign, analysts say, of how serious those challenges have become.

“It has reached a stage where it is just impossible to overlook it,” said Ali Vaez, the Iran project director for the International Crisis Group. “The gap between the state and the society has reached a stage where it cannot just be painted over.”

What are the ancient origins of your zodiac sign?

Astrology has shaped civilizations for centuries, from Babylonian priests to Roman emperors, and continues to provide guidance for younger generations seeking clarity today.

Horoscope of Prince Iskandar from The Book of the Birth of Iskandar.

Many find comfort in the stars, turning to horoscopes to unravel the enigmas of their personalities and foresee what lies ahead. Though zodiac signs and horoscopes might appear modern, astrology has profoundly shaped civilizations across millennia, despite criticisms from skeptics who cite its lack of empirical evidence and scientific rigor. Here’s why it remains a powerful tool for many seeking guidance in an unpredictable world.

The ancient origins of horoscopes

The practice of astrology first originated in ancient Mesopotamia in the second millennium B.C. In the city of Babylon, the stars and planets were used to interpret omens from the gods,” says U.K.-based classicist and ancient world expert Jasmine Elmer .

However, only some people were considered qualified to make these interpretations. Babylonian priests were tasked with detailing how celestial bodies would impact society, especially the king and the state. This is evidenced in the Enuma Anu Enli , a series of 70 cuneiform tablets that contain around 7,000 celestial omens.

The Babylonians developed 12 astrological signs, some of which were later incorporated into the Western zodiac. However, it was the ancient Greeks who named these 12 star signs after constellations and linked them to specific dates based on their alignment with the sun’s orbit. These signs are Aries, Taurus, Gemini, Cancer, Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpius, Sagittarius, Capricornus, Aquarius, and Pisces. Furthermore, “zodiac” originates from the Greek phrase zōdiakos kyklos , meaning “circle of animals.”

( How well do you know the zodiac constellations ?)

Despite the Greeks’ contributions to astrology, horoscopes were not prevalent in ancient Greece. Instead, the focus was on using the stars to connect with the gods through divination, “which is essentially any kind of ritual practice that is about converse[ing] with the gods,” says Elmer. Over time, Babylonian astrology, which interpreted celestial events, merged with Greek divination practices. This blending led to the development of more personalized horoscopes we see today.

Claudius Ptolemy, an astrologer and astronomer in Alexandria, Egypt, laid down the foundation of Western astrology in his text Tetrabiblos , emphasizing the individual aspect of astrological interpretation. This is where the concept of personal horoscopes, or the idea that people can read and interpret the stars to learn about their own lives, first originated.

While the Western zodiac is widely recognized, other cultural practices have also shaped astrology worldwide. In India, Vedic astrology incorporates ancient Hindu beliefs and practices, offering a unique perspective on celestial influences. Chinese astrology, rooted in Taoist philosophy, assigns animal signs based on birth years, influencing cultural practices and societal beliefs.

From courtly predictions to alchemical pursuits

During the Middle Ages, astrology was widespread and significantly influenced everyday decisions. It was practiced not only by doctors, astronomers, and other scientific professionals, but it also played a crucial role in the development of alchemy , the proto-scientific precursor to chemistry.

In 14th-century Europe, astrologers were commonly found at royal courts, where they regularly provided personal horoscopes to monarchs. This practice was so prevalent that Charles V of France even commissioned the translation of astrological texts. However, astrology’s reputation shifted during the 15th-century witch trials in England, where it became associated with sorcery and paganism. As a result, some monarchs began to distance themselves from individual horoscopes.

( Paganism is on the rise—here’s where to discover its traditions .)

The Renaissance marked a resurgence in the general interest in astrology on a personal and philosophical level. Amidst a reckoning of Christian beliefs and the natural sciences, the private practice of astrology blossomed. This led to the creation of astrological charts and calendars, removing the previous language and education barriers to astrology and the interpretation of horoscopes.

A pop up astrological illustration from the The Archidoxa (1569).

One notable European astrologist, Leonhard Thurneisser, employed by a German prince, published a pop-up book in 1575 titled Astrolabium that could be used to create individual horoscopes with the aid of spinning wheel charts.

The modern resurgence of horoscopes

However, astrology and horoscopes’ prevalence faded with the onset of the Scientific Revolution and subsequent Age of Enlightenment. By the end of the 17th century, astrology was seldom practiced. Personal horoscopes didn’t make a resurgence in modern history until the early 20th century with the advent of the horoscope newspaper column.

In 1930, the Sunday Express published a birthday horoscope for Princess Margaret , written by high-profile British astrologer R.H. Naylor. Like many current astrologers, Naylor used a natal star chart to predict Princess Margaret’s horoscope three days after her birth. In general, natal star charts use the date, time, and birth location to create a snapshot of the sky from the very moment you were born. Analysis of the chart provides insight into a person’s traits, personality, and path in life.

( We’re in Mercury retrograde. Here’s what that really means .)

Naylor’s analysis of the Princess’ star chart predicted that she would have an “eventful” life and that “events of tremendous importance to the Royal Family and the nation” would occur around her seventh birthday. This attracted much public attention, prompting the newspaper to commission more articles from Naylor.

Before long, he started writing a weekly column called “ What the Stars Foretell ,” which offered advice on horoscopes based on the birthdays that fell in a given week.

Newspapers in the U.S., like the Boston Globe , also started running horoscope columns around this time. In the 1980s, many newspapers established premium astrology phone lines that allowed readers to call in and receive a personalized horoscope reading.

Today, horoscopes are more popular than ever, especially with Gen Z and Millenials . Beyond its astronomical origins, astrology, according to experts , can foster a sense of community and bring social cohesion. Carl Jung, a renowned psychologist who explored astrology’s archetypal symbols and their impact on the human psyche, suggested that astrology provides a language for understanding universal patterns of human experience.

Caitlin Clark records first triple-double by rookie in WNBA history as Fever upset Liberty

The legend of Caitlin Clark grows yet again. The Indiana Fever star became the first rookie in WNBA history to record a triple-double Saturday as she pulled down her 10th rebound midway through the fourth quarter against the New York Liberty .

Clark’s historic performance fueled the Fever to an 83-79 upset over the league-leading Liberty, as she finished with 19 points, 13 assists and 12 rebounds while the Fever erased a double-digit fourth-quarter deficit.

Clark also became the first player in Fever history to record a triple-double.

“Honestly, I’m just happy we won,” Clark said afterward. “I take a lot of pride in being able to do a lot of different things for this team. I think we’re really good when I can get the ball off the glass and just go in transition and find my teammates and set them up. Obviously 13 assists, that means my teammates made 13 shots off my passes so that goes to them.”

The Fever needed every ounce of production from Clark’s game-high 38 minutes, as the Liberty were led by 42 combined points from Sabrina Ionescu and Betnijah Laney-Hamilton . Clark rode a hot start to her history-making performance Saturday, as she had 13 points, 5 rebounds and 7 assists by halftime.

Her 13 assists and 12 rebounds both match her career highs.

Indiana’s home supporters roared in delight as Clark pulled down her 10th rebound with 7:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. Clark said afterward she wasn’t “too aware” of what she needed for the triple-double, but the crowd nevertheless made clear she had made history.

“Obviously, it’s really cool. I’ve been finishing the ball at a really really high rate,” she said. “My assist numbers, that’s because of (my teammates), just finding them in positions to be successful, whether it’s (Aliyah Boston), whether it’s ( NaLyssa Smith ). They’ve done a really good job of that. I guess it’s cool.”

Clark became a regular triple-double machine during her time at Iowa, tallying a Big Ten record (men’s or women’s) 17 triple-doubles. The previous record was six.

The only player in NCAA history with more triple-doubles than Clark was Ionescu.

More than just Clark’s historic performance, Indiana showed significant improvement in its fourth, and final, meeting against the Liberty. Indiana entered Saturday on a nine-game losing streak to New York, having lost twice this season by 36 points, the worst two losses of its season.

The last time these two teams played — on July 2 — marked the end of an 11-game in 20-day stretch for the Fever. Fatigue proved to be a factor, with Indiana shooting only 37 percent from the field and allowing New York to shoot 57.6 percent from the field. Indiana’s defense was much improved on Saturday, holding New York to 40.3 percent shooting from the field and 23.7 percent shooting from 3-point range.

Clark said afterward impressed by how Indiana has responded to opposing runs in recent games. The Fever overcame a 15-point second-half deficit against the Phoenix Mercury last weekend and an 11-point on Saturday.

“I think the biggest difference for us has been when teams make runs, we don’t crumble,” Clark said. “We’ve kind of just been able to change our mindset and really just stay together, and attack it together.”

Entering Saturday, Clark has averaged 16 points, 7.1 assists and 5.7 rebounds in 21 games for the Fever. She has now recorded at least a double-double in four of her last seven games and came close to this historic feat with her 15-points, 12-assist, 9-rebound performance against the Mercury on June 30.
