Opti Racing Explained

Getting started.

Opti Green Fleet is a great entry level experience for novice racers. When is a sailor ready for Green Fleet? Generally if they can get around two buoys with minimal assistance they're ready for Green Fleet.

All  Northwest Youth Racing Circuit events include an Opti Green Fleet, with the exception of the WIND Regatta. Green Fleet racing often takes place on a separate race course that is smaller and more protected. Green fleet usually enjoys a shorter day on the water and/or a lunch break mid way through racing. Coaching is permitted during racing for the back half of the fleet, and coaches are encouraged to coach everyone, not just their sailors. Many regatta hosts provide Optis free of charge, and/or offer a reduced entry fee for Green Fleet sailors. At some regattas it can be as easy as just showing up with a lifejacket and positive attitude!

There are no prizes or trophies for Green Fleet, instead sailors are given participation awards. Most Green Fleet sailors are between the ages 7-10. The only age restriction is that sailors must be younger than 15. Sailors generally do Green Fleet for one year, or until they are near the top of the fleet, before moving up to Championship Fleet. Switching back and forth between Green Fleet and Championship Fleet is discouraged. Click here to read the USODA Green Fleet Policy Statement .

In addition to the NWYRC Green Fleet events, there are other local green fleet style events to attend. The Milfoil Dodger series is popular among Seattle area sailing programs. They are casual one day regattas with an emphasis on fun and learning. Many novice racers will participate in both the Milfoils and Green Fleet at the NWYRC regattas. Milfoils are a great way to gain confidence and experience. The Milfoil Dodger Calendar is below...

Championship Fleet

When sailors are ready to move out of Green Fleet they move into the  "Opti Championship Fleet." T o make Optimist racing in the United States as fair as possible, the class puts each skipper into an age group or fleet.  White Fleet is for skippers who are ages 10 and under. Blue Fleet is for skippers who are 11 or 12. Red Fleet is for skippers who are 13-15. At  Northwest Youth Racing Circuit  regattas white, blue, and red fleets are combined. However, overall series results are broken down into age groups. At the end of the summer the NWYRC recognizes the top finishers in each age group, plus an overall series champion.

"Aging Out" or "Sizing Out?"

On their 16th birthday sailors "age out" of the Optimist and are no longer allowed to compete in the class. However, most sailors "size out" before they "age out." Sailors will start to outgrow the Opti around 110lbs. For some sailors this happens sooner than others. Those who are very competitive may stick it out until they are 115lbs, but being competitive becomes increasingly difficult once you exceed this weight. My advice is to stay in the Opti as long as you are still having fun and feeling competitive. It's no fun to be the biggest sailor and get passed by everyone in light or medium wind. Before that happens, start thinking about what's next. Maybe that's the Laser with a smaller 4.7 rig or sailing an FJ with a friend.

Class Association

The United States Optimist Dinghy Association oversees Opti racing here in the US. The USODA is in charge of enforcing class rules, overseeing national/qualifying regattas, and selecting the US National Team. The USODA adheres to the rules and guidelines set forth by the International Optimist Dinghy Association . Opti sailors are strongly encouraged to join the USODA. Although USODA membership is not required for NWYRC events, it is required for championships, qualifiers, and team-trials. Membership is also a good way to support the class that supports you! On the USODA website you'll find lots of great resources!

The US National Team

The US National Team is run by the USODA. The purpose of the USNT is to improve the level of Optimist sailing in the United States, by providing high level training to top US Optimist sailors who compete internationally. The team receives the best coaching available and practices against the best sailors in the country. The team also tries to improve the fitness of sailors. It is funded by parents of participating sailors and does not impact the USODA budget. A sailor must first qualify for Team Trials by finishing in the top 20% of the USODA NW Championships or one of the country's other regional Opti championships. Team trials is arguably the most competitive Opti regatta in nation, since the best sailors from each region are all in attendance. The top forty-five (45) finishers at Team Trials are selected to the US National Team, which is an elite travel group that participates in international Opti regattas all over the globe.

Otto petersen elementary (scappoose, or) - columbia river maritime museum, preparing the boat.

Laycee Kinsman’s 6th grade class prepared this little boat for a December 2017 deployment off Oregon.

Even before it launched, it was reported in the press here . “This isn’t just our ocean, it belongs to hundreds of thousands of people around the world,” Kinsman said.” It’s about enriching our experience and working outside of our own community to discovery diversity and new viewpoints.”

December 6, 2017 - Launched

The 6 December 2017 sunset launch occurred 2 miles NNW of the CR Buoy (7 miles off shore) and was recorded on video (see below) thanks Captain Jordan, Captain Matteo, and the crew of the P/V Astoria.

February 28, 2018 - Landed in Alaska

After 82 miraculous days at sea, the S/V Red, White, and Blue Crew made landfall on the East side of Legma Island 16 miles SW of Sitka Alaska. USCG Air Station Sitka was alerted to keep their eye open for a potential rescue!

March 1, 2018- Spotted by the USCG from the air

Spotted from the air! Below is the latest update from our amazing USCG at Air Station Sitka.

LT Sirokman- “Attached are some photos of the project vessel from Scappoose Elementary School.

We were unable to pull it off the beach and refloat it because we did not have a rescue swimmer aboard, however, we got pictures and an updated location. Weather and time-permitting, I may take my whaler out there with Rhett this weekend on an adventure to find it and see if we can get it back in the water.  In the meantime, attached are some pictures that our ace photographer, AET2 Dart, took from the mighty MH-60T.”

March 2, 2018 - Recovered!

March 2018 - update from sitka.

Over the last month Ben Johnson of Compass Rose Charter has been taking great care of the S/V Red, White, and Blue Crew.  The miniboat had some minor hull damage that Ben filled and ready for her visit to Ms. Golden’s 6 th  grade science class in mid-March. After seeing the miniboat and finding out about the project, she proposed that her class relaunch S/V Red, White, and Blue Crew on their annual field trip!

April 3, 2018 - CRMM visit to repair and relaunch

April 4, 2018 - relaunched into the northern pacific.

An article appeared later in the Sitka Sentinel :

April 22, 2018 - Landed in Cook Inlet

After 18 days at sea, it appeared the RWBC landed on Augustine Island in Cook Inlet. Thanks to the Alaska Ocean Observing System ( AOOS ), which is part of the NOAA Integrated Ocean Observing System, we were connected with Susan Saupe, Director of Science and Research of the Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council, who is now helping us with the rescue mission. They plan to be in the area in Mid-May and will attempt a recovery.

Researching the area is important when coordinating a rescue mission and AOOS suggested we look at what the beach is like where the boat ran aground using ShoreZone imagery.  This link  zooms into Augustine Island.

June 14, 2018 - RWBC miniboat recovered!

Great news came in by email today from Susan Saupe, Director of Science and Research at CIRCAC (Cook Inlet Regional Citizens Advisory Council), who says they have recovered the miniboat! Her assessment: “It’s pretty damaged.  It looks like it got beat up around the big boulders on the east side of Augustine, and the mast and sail came off…..but, they were still very near each other and we collected both the boat and the sail. The boat barely fit in the helicopter and was definitely a little water logged – we drained most of it.  You’ll have to decide if its repairable to deploy again. “Susan also reported that “the Augustine Volcano is fascinating, so I hope the class was able to do a little research on its history since it was home to their drifter for about two months.”

Susan also sent pictures from the rescue:

Kendra Bush-St Louis, an education specialist for the Alaska Maritime Refuge, has expressed interested in bringing the boat to local schools before being relaunched. Looks like she’ll need some time to be repaired this summer anyway so off to Homer she’ll go.

The Columbia River Maritime Museum’s Miniboat Program was developed in partnership with  Educational Passages  and the Consular Office of Japan in Portland. Students in the Pacific Northwest build unmanned sailboats equipped with GPS transmitters, one to launch from the coast of North America and the other to send to their partner class in Japan for launching. While the boats are at sea, students on opposite sides of the Pacific Ocean will track their movements. Using real-time data on ocean currents and weather, students will share their predictions on where the boats will go next, and hopefully create lasting friendships.

The mission:  to get the boats to cross the Pacific Ocean.

The outcome:  through hands-on activities and meaningful opportunities, students are enlightened and empowered.

Boat Flag Color Meanings

Boat Flag Color Meanings

Boat Flag History

Boats have flown flags as a way of communicating across the water from the beginning. Colors designating origin and intent go back into prehistory. However, the modern way of signaling started in the 17th century. The Duke of York is credited with Modern naval code signaling starting with the Lord High Admiral after the Restoration.

To the untrained eye the flags have little meaning besides perhaps the country flags flown. This is not the case though, the colors have very specific meanings that can be seen below.

Once you have learned about what colors mean, check out our collection of boat flags here!

Signal Flags

Signal flags are known as the International Code of Signals.

Popular Boat Flag Color Questions

Question: What are the colors of nautical flags?

Answer: You can use all colors on nautical flags. There are different kinds of nautical flags with different requirements. For signal flags, white, red, yellow, black, and blue are the only colors allowed.

Question: What d oes a black and yellow flag mean on a boat?

Answer: A black and yellow squares flag is "Lima." In days past it was meant to signal a quarantine with a dangerous infectious disease on board. That standard was abolished in 1965. Now it simply means "you should stop your vessel immediately." Some people may still adhere to the old standard. In either case, you should avoid any ship flying a black and yellow squares flag.

Question: What does a black flag mean on a ship?

Answer: In years past a black flag was flown by pirates. It showed intent to board a vessel and take valuables. If the boarded vessel did not fight back the crew would be spared. You can create your own black pirate flag here! This is in contrast to the red flag which meant no quarter would be given. These days, the black flag is mainly used in sailing races. If a black flag is raised the vessel has been disqualified from the race.

Question: What does a Blue Flag mean on a boat?

Answer: Blue and white means a diver is in the water. Blue not on signal flags shows a regard for the environment. You could create your own custom blue boating flag the show your support of the environment here.

Question: What does a red flag mean on a boat?

Answer: Red is generally a signal of danger. A red flag with black square signals a hurricane or storm. In the Golden Age of Piracy it was a sign that no quarter will be given.

Question: What does a solid orange flag mean?

Answer: In the United States, boats towing people are required to carry a solid orange flag. The flag will be raised with the water skier, tuber, or person otherwise being towed is down and in the water.

Question: What does a white and blue flag mean for boating?

Answer: A white and blue flag is most commonly "Alpha." It signals there is a diver in the water and that other vessels should stay away and steer clear.

Question: What does a white flag mean on a boat?

Answer: A white flag designates a private or dangerous area. It signals "Do not enter, touch, or use."

Question: What does a yellow flag on a yacht mean?

Answer: The yellow flag is "Q" and it signals that there is no disease on board the vessel.

Planned Outage for Some Cornell Lab Services

Several Cornell Lab of Ornithology services will be unavailable beginning March 19 through 6:00 a.m. U.S. Eastern time on March 21 . This is a one-time disruption while we migrate more than 1.6 billion eBird observations and additional project data to new servers. After the move, our websites will have improved reliability, stability, and room to grow. Thank you for your understanding during this outage.

Don’t worry, your data (checklists, media, Bird Academy courses, Merlin life list, etc.) will be safe during the migration and will be unaffected when we come back online.

Unavailable: The following websites and services will be down during this period:

  • eBird.org , including eBird portals, eBird Alerts, the eBird API, eBird Science, and data downloads
  • Macaulay Library
  • Birds of the World

Partially affected: Several Cornell Lab projects will remain up but services that require a login will be unavailable:

  • Bird Academy login and store will be unavailable. Users will be able to access most course materials if they were logged in to the site before the outage. Snap ID quizzes will not function during the outage.
  • NestWatch and Project FeederWatch login and data entry will be unavailable both on the website and the app. Please record your data on paper and enter it after the outage ends.
  • eBird Mobile app : The Explore and My eBird functions will not work during the outage. You can use the app to create checklists and then submit them after the outage ends. Your eBird data will be safe.
  • Merlin Bird ID app : Sound ID will continue to work, as well as Photo ID, Step-by-Step, and Explore, using your recent locations only. You will not be able to save sightings, refresh your life list, update your location, or log in to your account. These functions will return when the outage ends and your data will be safe.

Unaffected: The following sites will continue to function as normal:

  • Cornell Lab of Ornithology institutional website
  • All About Birds
  • Cornell Lab YouTube channel

What Can I Do During the Outage?

Go out birding.

  • If you already have Merlin Bird ID app installed, you can still use it for some purposes. Though you won’t be able to update your location, save sightings, or refresh your life list, the ID functions will still work with your saved locations, and you can still browse species using Explore Birds
  • If you already have the eBird Mobile app installed on your device, you can start eBird Mobile checklists during the downtime and submit them once eBird is back online. Learn how to Enter Sightings with eBird Mobile
