What gjw direct customers think.

1st impressions of dealing with GJW and taking out the cover on our V45 10/10. Debbie extremely helpful. Thank you for your perseverance in getting the right cover in place for us.

Unfortunately in the last 10 months I have had to make 2 insurance claims - GJW on both occasions have been absolutely fantastic . I would strongly recommend this company - truly outstanding - great service and very easy to deal with - Thanks

Sarah was exceptionally helpful in arranging my boat insurance and ensured by the end of the call that I was informed, knowledgeable and pleased that I had secured the best possible cover for my needs. Thank you!

GJW have been my chosen insurance provider for 26 years and we have now insured our 8th boat with them, a Riva. They have always exceeded our expectations.

A company with a good reputation in the industry. They provided a competitive premium quote which was agreed without difficulty. A first rate service from Debbie. We have had no claims on our policies since 1995 - long may it continue!

Excellent service to sort out new insurance for us. Good price, swift responses and easy signing up. They included our pontoon easily when others would not.

Remarkably helpful and knowledgeable staff who answer the phone readily. I have talked to them on a number of occasions as I plan my boat insurance needs. In general they seem to be mature, experienced people who understand their business and their industry and are happy to answer questions and explain how things work.

Great company, policies tailor made for liveaboards with inclusive cover for realistic amount of contents at a very competitive price. Nice people giving a personal service....what's not to like?

We've just renewed our widebeam insurance for this coming year and received an excellent service from GJW. Really good premium and only a very small increase. Superb!

Debbie at GJW was very helpful in arranging the insurance for my boat....my narrowboat is over 30 years old and I expected the process to be problematic....it was a relief to be able to get such comprehensive cover so easily and quickly. THANK YOU, Debbie 🙂

I have just renewed my Barge Insurance with GJW and I am very satisfied with the service. Their price was very competitive and I was pleased that my premium has not gone up this year.

Excellent, friendly service with competitive prices and always quick and factual responses to communications and questions - very highly recommended!

Fabulous service from GJW Direct recently. I managed to 'banana' my Supernova mast whilst racing - a tricky downwind leg in a strong and gusty breeze and a nasty capsize at speed. Submitted my claim on Monday; claims team emailed me on Tuesday; new mast arrived on Wednesday. All this meant that I didn't miss coaching on the very next Saturday or Club racing on the Sunday = very happy customer!

I've insured with GJW for a few years having found their pricing competitive. But you never really know about an insurer until you make a claim. Well last month I had to claim for a snapped dinghy centreboard. I found them efficient and really easy to deal with, my claim was settled for exactly the amount I was expecting. After that experience I'll definitely stay with them and won't hesitate to recommend GJW to others. Stay safe people.

I have used GJW dinghy insurance for several years. The premiums are competitive for very comprehensive cover. When I recently had to make a claim, the service and response by Ashley was rapid, polite, and faultless. Whilst I continue to need dinghy insurance I will continue to use GJW Direct - hopefully without having to claim again.

Yacht and catamaran insurance FAQs

What is yacht insurance.

Essentially, yacht insurance aims to protect your craft, other craft on the water and of course, you and your passengers. The idea of insurance is to put you back in the financial position you were in before you experienced a loss of some sort.

This financial loss could come about in the form of damage to your boat, a third party claiming against you for damage to their craft or in the worst case, loss caused by injury to you or one of your passengers.

Towergate yacht insurance covers all the areas mentioned above. Though it isn’t necessarily a legal requirement, many marinas require a minimum of third party cover if you’d like to use their facilities. In any case, it is strongly advised you have insurance in place due to the high value of the yachts themselves and the potential for injury.

How can I get the best value from my yacht insurance?

Moor in a marina - Our policy offers extra benefits for mooring in a marina as mooring at a berth in a marina is typically safer and more secure than a swinging mooring.

Use Smart Water - Mark your equipment with a Smart Water kit purchased using your unique Towergate code and you can receive a further 10% discount.

Get a survey of your craft completed if it’s over 25 years old

Let us know if you have RYA qualifications - We like to reward those who try to develop their own sailing competence as this only makes them safer on the water. Let us know if you have a RYA qualifications and we could award you another 10% discount.

Let us know if you’re planning on racing

Do you offer laid up cover for yachts?

Not all of us are lucky enough to use our yachts all year round. There are likely to be times when the weather is too rough or your yacht is in need of essential maintenance. During these times, you may wish to take your boat out of the water and store it in a dry dock or stack storage.

It's also a strong possibility that your boat will need to be out of the water if you're selling it on. It's a good idea to take it out of the water to allow potential buyers to fully inspect the hull, keel and other components which sit below the waterline.

As well as covering your yacht when it's in the water, Towergate can also apply laid up cover for when it is out of the water and not in use for an extended period. This cover will insure your yacht against theft, damage, vandalism and third party cover whilst it is off the water. It won't cost you any more money, you just need to let us know that you're taking your boat off the water and how long for.

Does this cover come with any exclusions?

It’s very important to read your policy documents in detail, so you understand what’s covered and what could void your cover. Listed below are a few key exclusions you should be aware of. Check your policy document for a full list of exclusions.

  • Mechanical failure is not covered if your craft is over three years old.
  • Personal accident cover won’t cover individuals over the age of 76 - If you are over the age of 76 the personal accident aspect of our cover will not apply. All cover relating to the craft however, will still apply.
  • Wear and tear and mechanical failure are not covered - If your craft is under three years old, we can provide mechanical failure cover. Wear and tear however, is not covered.
  • Replacements beyond the sums insured on your policy - Our policy works on a market value basis. Therefore, it’s important to know the true replacement value of your yacht. You will be unable to claim for a replacement yacht above the value you give us. If you’re unsure of the value of your yacht, a marine surveyor will be able to make an assessment and give you an accurate value.

What are the benefits of yacht insurance?

Our yacht insurance comes with a few different options allowing you to get the cover that’s right for your value of craft, level of sailing experience and mooring arrangements. Listed below are just a selection of our best features and how they can benefit yacht owners just like you.

• £3,000,000 third party liability included as standard - The waterways, rivers and seas can be tricky places to travel around on and sometimes mishaps occur. Add to that the fact that yachts and other craft tend to carry a hefty price tag and you’ve got a recipe for some expensive accidents. Our yacht insurance policy includes £3,000,000 third party cover so if you accidently cause damage to someone else’s property whilst on the water your insurance will cover the cost of that damage. • Personal accident cover (optional) - If you enjoy challenging yourself with rough seas and high speeds, we advise you add personal accident cover to your policy. Our personal accident feature will cover medical expenses and emergency treatment. • Protected no claims bonus (platinum level cover) - Take out our highest level of cover to have your no claims bonus protected year on year even if you have to claim (No more than two claims per year). • Marina benefits (platinum level cover only) - If you permanently moor your boat on a marina berth or keep it ashore at the same location, we won’t charge your excess on any claim made while it’s moored or stored. This also won’t affect your no-claims bonus. • Failure of machinery (on yachts less than three years old) - You’d hope that newer yachts wouldn’t have too much trouble with the machinery on-board. Never-the-less, we include cover for this should you be unlucky. • Legal expenses cover - Should a third party bring charges against you for damage caused to their craft or personal injury caused by you, our legal expenses cover can help with your legal fees up to £100,000. • 24 hour legal and claims advice line - In addition to covering legal fees, we also offer legal advice to guide you through what to do if you get involved in a legal dispute. • Travel concierge service - Part of the joy of owning a yacht is the ability to travel to new places. The travel concierge service can arrange; local hotels, restaurants, theatre tickets and more.

I have some expensive equipment on-board. Will this be covered on and off the water by my yacht insurance policy?

Our yacht insurance covers a number of items, including things you’d carry on your person such as digital compasses or pocketknives. These smaller items do have a single article limit of £300. However, you can also cover more expensive items such as on-board GPS equipment and outboard motors. All you need to do is let us know what you’d like covered so we can include it in your sums insured. Please let us know if you would like to cover any items over the £300 single article limit.

Are there any restrictions on my cruising range?

Unfortunately, we can’t cover you in the Caribbean or the Baltic seas, though we can sometimes refer this to our underwriters. As a rule, we do not cover any cruising more than 35 degrees east in the Mediterranean. Again though, you’ll need to let us know if you want to change your cruising range from what you originally agreed when you set up your policy. See the question below for more detail.

If I need to make changes to my yacht policy, can I do this halfway through the year?

Things never stand still in the world of boating. So, if you’ve installed the latest gadget and you need your sums insured amended or you’ve changed your mooring arrangements or cruising range, give us a call and we’ll update your policy. There is an administration fee charged to change the details on your policy plus any premium increase related to the additional cover you require.

Do I need to get my yacht surveyed?

If your yacht is over 35 years old, we will require proof that you’ve had it surveyed. Furthermore, we will require your craft to have a survey every 10 years thereafter. For yachts under 35 years, no survey is required for you to take out insurance.

Can I get third-party liability cover for older yacht and catamarans?

Yes, we also provide liability for those actively using older yachts or launching onto the water. This third-party cover product includes the removal and disposal of wrecked craft, as well as the re-floating and removal of damaged craft.

How do I qualify for discounts on my yacht insurance premium?

In some ways, yacht insurance works like car insurance. If you’re an experienced sailor, your premium might work out cheaper. Contact us to see if any discounts apply.

Can I pay in instalments?

If you would prefer to spread the cost of your yacht and catamaran insurance policy, you have the option of setting up a Direct Debit to pay your premium in monthly instalments through our preferred provider, Premium Credit Limited (PCL).

To find out more about PCL and direct debit payments, select  Direct Debit . To understand more about how PCL work together with Towergate, please read our  Regulatory Information .

Where can I find full details of my policy?

We have provided a summary of the key features of the policy, above. For details of the terms and conditions applicable, please refer to the insurance product information document and policy wording, which are available during the quotation process.

  • Yacht & Motorboat Insurance

Competitive all-risks marine insurance for yachts & motorboats.

Start your journey with us today., start your journey today., insurance for a wide range of boats, what is boat insurance.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor or new to the wonderful world of boating, there are a number of things to consider when taking out a boat insurance policy for your pride and joy. While it’s not usually a legal requirement on most waters, more-often-than-not purchasing a boat, yacht or dingy is a sizeable investment, so it makes financial sense to ensure it is protected. Boat insurance and yacht insurance will cover you for risks both on the water and while it’s in transit; after all if anything does happen, it can result in a large and costly repair bill!

We also arrange standalone skipper-only insurance, personal accident insurance, crew personal accident insurance, and legal cover. The marine insurance industry is bracing for huge claims from the Baltimore bridge disaster

Huge insurance claims are expected after the Dali collided with a major bridge on Tuesday.

The claims could be on par with the $1.5 billion from the Costa Concordia disaster, an expert told Insurance Business.

Insurance claims could include damage to the ship, business interruption, and worker compensation.

The marine insurance industry is bracing for huge claims from Tuesday's Baltimore bridge disaster.

Insurance claims from the collision of the Dali containership with the Francis Scott Key Bridge could be on par with a 2012 maritime disaster that led to $1.5 billion in payouts, John Miklus, the president of the American Institute of Marine Underwriters, told trade magazine Insurance Business on Tuesday.

Luxury cruise ship Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Italy in January 2012, killing 32 people in one of Europe's worst modern maritime tragedies. That disaster led to the marine insurance industry's highest payout, according to the trade publication.

"I wouldn't be surprised if this were similar," Miklus told Insurance Business.

It was not immediately clear how long it took to settle all of Costa Concordia's claims, but it appears to have taken at least a few years.

"You've got various components to the loss," Miklus added. "A big one is going to be rebuilding the bridge and all the loss of revenue and loss of tolls while that's taking place."

The Baltimore bridge brought in about $53 million in toll revenue for the Maryland Transportation Authority in 2023, Moody's analyst Cintia Nazima told The Wall Street Journal on Tuesday.

Other insurance claims from Dali's Baltimore collision could include damage to the ship and its cargo, as well as business interruption, property, trade credit, and worker compensation, per Business Insurance.

The marine insurance and reinsurance markets are likely to foot most of the bills, S&P Global reported on Tuesday.

The Baltimore bridge itself is insured by insurance giant Chubb, per Insurance Insider.

Dali, the ship, is covered by Britannia P&I Club, a specialist insurer that provides protection and indemnity cover for the maritime industry. Britannia is a member of the London-based International Group of P&I Clubs.

The International Group of P&I Clubs will only cover the first $10 million in claims from any one incident, per the company's website. The remaining bill will be shared by the members, groups from specialist marketplace Lloyd's of London, and reinsurers.

The claims process could take years, mirroring the situation surrounding the Ever Given containership, which ran aground and blocked the Suez Canal for six days in March 2021.

SCOR, a French reinsurer estimated in June 2022 that Ever Given's claims could top $2 billion.

"It will take many years to settle the claims from the Ever Given and the process will include much debate about who is liable," SCOR wrote in the report. "The issue of responsibilities and applicable laws in today's global maritime world is complex."

Do I Really Need Insurance For My Motor Yacht?

Insurance helps you protect yourself against risks. The types of insurance that you need will depend on what you need to protect. Boat Insurance can typically be split into two types, Hull and Third Party Liability. We generally recommend that boat owners insure themselves against both the liability risks arising from the use of their own boat (Third Party Liability) and loss or damage to the boat itself (Hull). You may, of course, decide not to take out a Hull Insurance and fover the financial consequences of any damage to the boat yourself. In these cases, we would recommend, as a minimum, you take out Third Party Liability insurance .

Insurance for Motor Yacht Owners: The Most Important Policies

Motor yacht hull insurance.

This type of insurance protects you against costs arising from loss or damage to your motor yacht. The Pantaenius Motor Yacht Cover Plus policy is based on an Agreed Fixed Value and offers the most comprehensive cover available in the UK and covers your motor yacht against all risks including cover for mechanical breakdown, damage caused by misfuelling and loss or damage to fuel, all included as standard. With an Agreed Fixed Value policy, the value of the boat is agreed between insured and insurer right from the start and that’s what is covered in the event of a total loss whereas some insurance providers will only offer market value or reserve the right to replace the marine vessel with a similar one. Most boat hull insurance policies will have an excess. An excess is the amount you agree to pay towards any claim you make. Amounts differ from policy to policy as does the application – so if comparing two policies, one possibly with a higher excess than the other, look to see what type of claim it does or does not apply to.

Motor Yacht Third Party Liability Insurance

Unlike with motor, there is no legal requirement to have marine Third Party Liability Insurance. However, having this type of insurance for your motor yacht makes sound financial sense as it will protect you against any third party liability for injury or damage caused by you or your motor yacht. The consequence of damaging a jetty, blocking a channel or water pollution can quickly bring a significant financial burden should you not have the appropriate insurance in place.

The collapsed bridge in Baltimore

Baltimore bridge collapse: what we know about the bridge, ship and port

Biden laments ‘terrible accident’ as six people still missing after Francis Scott Key Bridge snapped from collision with vessel

A bridge in the US city of Baltimore has snapped and collapsed after a ship collided with one of its support columns. Rescuers are searching the water for survivors and the state’s governor has declared a state of emergency.

Joe Biden has said search and rescue efforts remain a “top priority”, as six people are still missing. The president added there was no evidence the collapse of the bridge was intentional, calling it “a terrible accident”.

Here is what we know about the bridge, the ship and the port.

Overhead view showing collapsed sections of the bridge

Baltimore’s 1.6-mile (2.57km) Francis Scott Key Bridge was built out of steel and opened in 1977. With four lanes, the bridge is part of Interstate 695 and served as a major route along the ring road that encircles the city in the US state of Maryland.

It is named after the author of the American national anthem, The Star-Spangled Banner. The Maryland governor, Wes Moore, said the bridge had been “fully up to code” before Tuesday’s collision and collapse, indicating it met safety standards.

Live video posted on YouTube showed the ship ploughing into the bridge in darkness, with its main section collapsing into the Patapsco River below.

Several vehicles fell into the water, and officials said eight construction workers assisting with a project fell off. Six people remained unaccounted for.

One official said that sonar had detected cars in the water, which is about 50ft (15 metres) deep.

The National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team to investigate the disastrous collapse. Andrew Barr, an expert in civil and structural engineering at the University of Sheffield, said: “The video doesn’t show any obvious structural deficiencies with the bridge, but it will not have been designed to survive a head-on collision with such a large vessel.”

The Dali, stacked with shipping containers, behind a collapsed section of the bridge

Ship-tracking data showed a Singapore-flagged container ship, the Dali, at the location of the bridge where the accident occurred at about 1.30am ET (0530 GMT) on Tuesday.

The Dali, a 290-metre (948ft) cargo vessel, left Baltimore at 1am and was headed for the Sri Lankan capital, Colombo, according to the maritime data platform MarineTraffic. The shipping company Maersk said it had chartered the vessel.

The Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) confirmed that the vessel was registered in Singapore and said the agency was coordinating with the US Coast Guard and the ship’s management company to help. It also said it would investigate the incident itself.

Moore said the ship had lost power around the time it hit the bridge and the vessel’s crew had issued a “mayday” radio call. The ship then appeared to catch fire as part of the bridge collapsed over it, sending plumes of thick, black smoke into the air.

The shipping company Maersk said that it chartered the container ship in Baltimore, with the operator named as Synergy Marine Group. Maersk confirmed that there were 22 crew, and said they were all Indian. None of them were Maersk crew or personnel.

Reuters cited the manager of the ship, Synergy Marine Group, as saying the crew, including the two pilots, had been accounted for and there were no reports of injuries onboard.

Maersk added that there were 4,679 containers on board, roughly half of its 10,000 capacity.

The same vessel was also involved in a collision in 2016 in Antwerp, Belgium, according to VesselFinder and the maritime incident archive Shipwrecklog. At the time, the stern scraped the side of the quay, significantly damaging several metres of the hull. There were reportedly no injuries or adverse pollution and the weather was reported to be fine at the time. The incident was reportedly blamed on the ship’s master and pilot onboard.

The harbour is one of the busiest in the country and an important hub for shipping on the US east coast, especially in transporting road vehicles. It also handles farming, construction machinery and coal, according to a Maryland government website.

Port traffic was suspended until further notice after the bridge collapse.

What we know about the container ship that crashed into the Baltimore bridge

  • The ship that crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge on Tuesday was the Singapore-flagged Dali.
  • The container ship had been chartered by Maersk, the Danish shipping company.
  • Two people were recovered from the water but six remain missing, authorities said.

Insider Today

A container ship crashed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing its collapse into the Patapsco River.

A livestream showed vehicles traveling on the Francis Scott Key Bridge just moments before the impact at 1:28 a.m. ET.

Baltimore first responders called the situation a "developing mass casualty event" and a "dire emergency," per The Associated Press.

James Wallace, chief of the Baltimore Fire Department, said in a press conference that two people had been recovered from the water.

One was uninjured, but the other was transported to a local trauma center in a "very serious condition."

Wallace said up to 20 people were thought to have fallen into the river and some six people were still missing.

Richard Worley, Baltimore's police chief, said there was "no indication" the collision was purposeful or an act of terrorism.

Wes Moore, the governor of Maryland, declared a state of emergency around 6 a.m. ET. He said his office was in close communication with Pete Buttigieg, the transportation secretary.

"We are working with an interagency team to quickly deploy federal resources from the Biden Administration," Moore added.

Understanding why the bridge collapsed could have implications for safety, in both the shipping and civil engineering sectors.

The container ship is the Singapore-flagged Dali, which is about 984 feet long, and 157 feet wide, per a listing on VesselFinder.

An unclassified Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency report said that the ship "lost propulsion" as it was leaving port, ABC News reported.

The crew notified officials that they had lost control and warned of a possible collision, the report said, per the outlet.

The Dali's owner is listed as Grace Ocean, a Singapore-based firm, and its manager is listed as Synergy Marine, which is also headquartered in Singapore.

Shipping news outlet TradeWinds reported that Grace Ocean confirmed the Dali was involved in the collapse, but is still determining what caused the crash.

Related stories

Staff for Grace Ocean declined to comment on the collision when contacted by Business Insider.

"All crew members, including the two pilots have been accounted for and there are no reports of any injuries. There has also been no pollution," Synergy Marine said in a statement.

The company did not respond to a request for further comment from BI.

'Horrified'

Maersk chartered the Dali, with a schedule for the ship on its website.

"We are horrified by what has happened in Baltimore, and our thoughts are with all of those affected," the Danish shipping company said in a statement.

Maersk added: "We are closely following the investigations conducted by authorities and Synergy, and we will do our utmost to keep our customers informed."

Per ship tracking data, the Dali left Baltimore on its way to Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, at around 1 a.m., about half an hour before the crash.

The Port of Baltimore is thought to be the largest in the US for roll-on/roll-off ships carrying trucks and trailers.

Barbara Rossi, associate professor of engineering science at the University of Oxford, told BI the force of the impact on one of the bridge's supporting structures "must have been immense" to lead to the collapse.

Dr Salvatore Mercogliano, a shipping analyst and maritime historian at Campbell University, told BI: "It appears Dali left the channel while outbound. She would have been under the control of the ship's master with a Chesapeake Bay pilot onboard to advise the master.

"The deviation out of the channel is probably due to a mechanical issue as the ship had just departed the port, but you cannot rule out human error as that was the cause of the Ever Forward in 2022 just outside of Baltimore."

He was referring to the incident two years ago when the container ship became grounded for a month in Chesapeake Bay after loading up cargo at the Port of Baltimore.

The US Coast Guard found the incident was caused by pilot error, cellphone use, and "inadequate bridge resource management."

Claudia Norrgren, from the maritime research firm Veson Nautical, told BI: "The industry bodies who are here to protect against incidents like this, such as the vessel's flag state, classification society, and regulatory bodies, will step in and conduct a formal investigation into the incident. Until then, it'll be very hard for anyone to truly know what happened on board."

This may not have been the first time the Dali hit a structure.

In 2016, maritime blogs such as Shipwreck Log and ship-tracking site VesselFinder posted videos of what appears to be the stern of the same, blue-hulled container vessel scraping against a quay in Antwerp.

A representative for the Port of Antwerp told BI the Dali did collide with a quay there eight years ago but couldn't "give any information about the cause of the accident."

The Dali is listed as being built in 2015 by Hyundai Heavy Industries in South Korea.

How much is Yacht Insurance in the UK

If you are a yacht owner or looking to become a yacht owner then one of the most important things on your list will be yacht insurance and how to ensure that the policy you sign up for fits both your sailing plans and your budgeting requirements.

Is it a legal requirement to have Yacht Insurance in the UK ?

The type of  Yacht Insurance  you need depends entirely on how you intend to use your yacht and where.  There is no legal requirement to have yacht insurance.  However, an increasing number of local authorities and marinas insist upon a minimum level of third party liability insurance.  For example, you will need a minimum of £1 million third party liability insurance prior to registering your boat for use on inland waterways and usually £3 million at most marinas.

For more information on owning a boat, statutory certificates and safety requirements at sea we suggest you visit the  Owning A Boat  web pages on the UK government website. Alternatively, why not  contact  our specialist team for advice on obtaining yacht insurance that reflects your needs.   That way you will obtain the best possible cover at a competitive premium to cover your sailing plans.

When buying a Yacht when should I purchase Insurance?

We would advise that you have yacht insurance in place prior to taking a financial interest in the yacht or when the sea trials have been completed and the boat is handed over, in the case of a new boat.  Even if you have no immediate plans to take your new pride and enjoy for a sail, it will be at the mercy of both the weather and other people’s carelessness.

What information will I need to provide for obtaining a Yacht Insurance Quote ?

When obtaining a  Yacht Insurance Quote  for either a yacht that you already own or one that you are planning to buy, you will need to have the following information to hand:

  • All your personal details and contact information
  • Full details of people in charge of the yacht including experience, previously owned boats, sailing qualifications and any claims.
  • Details of the yacht including model, value, age etc.
  • Engine manufacturer, horse power, maximum designed speed and type of fuel.
  • Details of the use – private,  corporate entertainment or charter
  • Value to be insured.  This should be market value or price paid
  • Details of the mooring and the location and planned cruising within the first year of the insurance policy.
  • And, finally the date of when you would like the yacht insurance policy to commence.

How to reduce the risk and yacht insurance premium cost

Just like any other insurance policy, your yacht insurance premium cost will depend on the level of risk, i.e. where in the world you intend to sail her and how she is secured.   Here are a few top tips from our experts at  Admiral Yacht Insurance  on reducing risk:

  • Before you buy a second hand yacht make sure you arrange for a full out of water survey by an independent surveyor.
  • You are also advised to have the rigging checked.  If the rigging is more than 10 years old it should be replaced and you therefore need to factor this into your offer.
  • Ask for an alternative quote with a higher than normal excess, as comparison, as this will reduce the premium.
  • Never insure for a larger cruising area than you need.  If you are not sure you can always ask for an option to extend the cruising area for an additional premium.

If you would like more information on keeping your yacht insurance costs to a minimum or require advice on the type of insurance cover you will need, and an indication of cost, prior to buying a yacht please  Contact Our Team  of experts who will guide you through the process.

Politics latest: Tory deputy chairman Jonathan Gullis blames 'pesky peers' and Labour for blocking Rwanda bill he abstained on

Jonathan Gullis, the new deputy chair of the Conservative Party, faced questions on Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge after latest figures showed a record number of migrants crossed the Channel in the first three months of this year.

Greater Manchester Police has said it is "reassessing" its decision not to investigate allegations made against Labour's deputy leader Angela Rayner over her living arrangements after receiving a complaint.

The Labour MP has come under the spotlight in recent weeks over the sale of an ex-council house she previously owned in Stockport, having been accused of avoiding capital gains tax - something she has denied.

But Ms Rayner has also faced scrutiny over claims that in 2010, she may have lived primarily at her then-husband's address, despite registering to vote under her own - which could be a breach of electoral rules.

She told journalists earlier this month that there was "never a question of deceitfulness" or "conspiracy" with regards to her living arrangements, as she outlined her "difficult" family situation at the time.

But Tory MP James Daly asked police to investigate whether she had given false information or broken election rules.

Initially, Greater Manchester Police looked into the claims and said there was no evidence of an offence being committed.

However, in a fresh statement released on Wednesday, a spokesperson for the force said: "We have received a complaint regarding our decision not to investigate an allegation and are in the process of reassessing this decision.

"The complainant will be updated with the outcome of the reassessment in due course."

Read more from our political reporter Jennifer Scott below:

As things wrap up, panel member Lord Ed Vaizey reveals he was having a drink at the Garrick Club before arriving for the Politics Hub tonight.

The club has come to fore recently due to its membership being publicised, and women not being allowed to join.

But Lord Vaizey says he is no longer a member - but that's because he had to give it up years ago as he could not afford it.

He then lets slip that the membership list was the main topic of discussion there tonight.

James Schneider, who was an adviser to Jeremy Corbyn, says he has never been to the club - and Sophy hasn't either.

Lord Vaizey wonders if he could nominate Sophy to be the first woman member, but then jokes that he will be blackballed for having revealed what was being spoken about.

And with that, the show finishes.

Housing Secretary Michael Gove's ambition - laid out in January 2023 - to end the leasehold system appears to have been gutted.

A leasehold is where someone pays a figure on a level with the sale price of a property, but actually just rents the property from a landlord for a period of 99 years or such - and they can be left liable to paying extra charges.

Kwajo Tweneboa, an affordable housing campaigner, says he believes Mr Gove will be "disappointed" in the turn of events.

Mr Gove said he wanted to end the system - which dates back hundreds of years - before the election, but it seems only a watered-down version is going to be passed.

Mr Tweneboa says: "I'm not here to pour glitter on any sort of politician, any MP or anything, but from my meetings with [Mr Gove], I do believe that he wants to create changes, whether it comes to the Renters' Reform bill, Social Housing Regulation Bill, but also Leasehold reform too.

"So if it is the case where it is being watered down in the way that's being suggested, I do believe he will be disappointed.

"I think perhaps he's going to have to take a firmer stance.

"Ultimately, we need reform to be as strong as possible."

Mr Tweneboa says pressure needs to be applied "equally" to whoever the next government is - Labour or Conservative.

Sophy's panel discuss why people are increasingly unhappy with the NHS.

Former Corbyn adviser James Schneider says the health service is one of "probably the most civilised things about our country".

But he says the past 30 years of "under-funding, part-privatisation and various botched attempts to reorganise it" have left people dissatisfied.

Ex-Tory minister Lord Vaizey says he has always been in favour of NHS reform - and that he doesn't see any problems with a private company delivering an NHS service.

He advocates for private companies to be given "simple operations - cataracts, knee replacements, that kind of thing" on a free-at-use basis to bring down waiting lists - as was the case under New Labour.

Our City editor Mark Kleinman  has some breaking news tonight about Thames Water.

He has heard that shareholders seem to be unwilling to stump up funds of up to £3bn to secure the utility's future.

Mark stresses to Sophy the company is not on the brink of collapse - but this is a major headache for the company as it has massive debts.

"This will raise fresh questions about whether Thames Water can survive as a solvent, independent company or whether it will have to be nationalised temporarily by the government," Mark says.

"Now, that would be a huge political headache for Rishi Sunak's administration, because it would come just months before the general election.

"It would ultimately cost taxpayers billions of pounds."

Read Mark's story below...

Over a year ago, Rishi Sunak made five pledges for voters to judge him on.

The prime minister met his pledge to halve inflation by the end of 2023.

However, as evidenced by the latest figures on small boat crossings (see 11.20 post), he is faring less well with his other pledges.

With the general election approaching, how is Mr Sunak doing on delivering on his promises?

You can see the progress for yourself below.

Sophy asks our panel why Rishi Sunak pledged to stop the boats when he could not do it.

Former Conservative minister Lord Vaizey says, that while he disagrees with Sophy's thesis, he agrees that it was a "mistake" to make the pledge.

There's nothing wrong with a politician making a promise, Lord Vaizey says, but the prime minister has driven "himself into a cul-de-sac".

James Schneider , a former Labour adviser in the Corbyn period, says he is not sure what the current Labour Party's policy on the issue is.

He says the opposition seem to be "duck for cover and let the government make a mess of it".

Mr Schneider says the row has the "intricate detail" of the Brexit debate, but it can't be voted on in such a way.

Mr Gullis sets out why he is different from former deputy chair Lee Anderson, who has defected to Reform UK.

Mr Anderson was a Labour councillor before he joined the Conservatives.

Mr Gullis says: "I've been a member of the Conservative Party since I was 18 years old.

"I've been an association officer, a councillor, and now a member of parliament.

"I've obviously been out with my members and across other members and across the country delivering leaflets, knocking on doors.

"I'm proud of the Conservative Party and what we've done and what we've delivered."

He says he "will go into battle" for Mr Sunak.

"I'll tell you something about Rishi that not many people know.

"My son went into hospital last year, and he was really struggling to breathe, and I only told one whip because I left the chamber and dashed in the car to get back up here to Stoke-on-Trent.

"Ten o'clock that night, Rishi texted me to ask how my child was doing. He checked in again at 7am the next morning and 10pm the next evening, and he did that day in, day out for five days in a row until my child was back home.

"That shows you the measure of the man, that shows you the decency, the humility, the caring nature he has for his colleagues as well as the country as a whole."

Jonathan Gullis is the newly minted deputy chair of the Conservative Party, and is speaking to the Politics Hub with Sophy Ridge.

He has taken up the role after Lee Anderson, a former deputy chair, defected to Reform UK.

Speaking about the record numbers of people who have crossed the Channel this year, Mr Gullis blames "pesky peers" - who are "predominantly Labour" - for blocking the Safety of Rwanda Bill.

Sophy puts it to Mr Gullis that he "blocked" the bill as well - as he abstained from voting for it previously.

"Sophy, there's a very clear difference here between saying that you want something to work, you believe in Rwanda, as I do," he says.

"And I want Rwanda to work as well, as I do, as the prime minister does.

"But obviously I had, with that particular bill, a couple of amendments that I wanted to see be adopted.

"They weren't adopted - I was true to my word.

"I said that I was going to not block the bill, unlike the Labour Party, who continue to block it at every turn, every corner."

Politics Hub With Sophy Ridge   is live now on Sky News.

The fast-paced programme dissects the inner workings of Westminster, with interviews, insights, and analysis - bringing the audience into the corridors of power.

Sophy will be joined by  Jonathan Gullis , a Tory MP and a newly minted deputy party chair.

Also on the show is  Kwajo Tweneboa , a housing and social issues campaigner.

On Sophy's panel tonight are:

  • Lord Ed Vaizey , former Conservative minister;
  • James Schneider , the former chief strategist for Jeremy Corbyn.
