Ghost in the Graveyard is a fun game to play outside in the summer and fall. This game may also be known as "The Witch Ain't Out Tonight", "Ghost is Out Tonight", and "Bloody Murder". It's not only fun, but it's also good exercise. This is an old game that has been handed down from one generation to another. There are several ways to play. The main objective is to pick a ghost who will hide while other players search. The ghost then tries to tag a player while the players try to get back to home base.

Playing the Traditional Version

  • You can add or subtract players as you continue to play as well. If someone wants to join in, just wait until the next round. Likewise, if someone wants to leave, that’s ok too.
  • Try to play with at least three people. More people will make the rounds last longer and can be more fun.
  • Make sure that all players understand the boundaries of the game. You can even make the rule that if a player goes outside the boundaries that player is eliminated for a round.
  • Your designated safe spot is where the players run to when the ghost is found. It can be a large tree, front stoop, back patio, etc. Try to designate a spot that everyone can physically touch or stand on.
  • If you want to pick a ghost the old fashioned way, you can have everyone form a circle with both of each player’s feet. Then one person says a rhyme while tapping one foot for each word. Each time the rhyme ends that player removes a foot. The rhyme is repeated until there is one foot left. [2] X Research source That person is the ghost.
  • The rhyme could be: “Bubble Gum, bubble gum in a dish. How many pieces do you wish?” Then whoever’s foot is touched says a number. The leader counts out that number and then says “…and you are out.”
  • After the first round, the next ghost is determined by the losing player. This is the player who was last to reach the safe zone. It can also be the first person if you wish.
  • The ghost must hide somewhere within the designated boundaries. The ghost cannot hide inside anywhere.
  • The ghost should go and hide somewhere that’s not close to the base. Finding a spot that’s further away and hidden will allow the ghost to have a better chance at tagging a player.
  • Alternatively, you can all count to 50 and then chant “Starlight, star bright, I hope to see a ghost tonight!” Depending on how large the playing area and how many places there are to hide, you want to give the ghost a good amount of time.
  • When anyone encounters the ghost that player should yell, “Ghost in the graveyard!" and try to run away. When the ghost catches someone, the new person becomes the only ghost.
  • If the ghost doesn’t catch anyone, then the last player to reach the base is the new ghost.

Playing an Alternate Version with Flashlights

  • If you want to pick a ghost the old fashioned way, you can have everyone form a circle with both of each player’s feet. Then one person says a rhyme while tapping one foot for each word. Each time the rhyme ends that player removes a foot. The rhyme is repeated until there is one foot left. That person is the ghost.
  • The players should not be looking where the ghost is going to hide. Everyone's eyes should be closed.
  • Alternatively, you can all count to 50 and then chant “Starlight, star bright, I hope to see a ghost tonight!” Depending on how the large the playing area and how many places there are to hide, you want to give the ghost a good amount of time.
  • The ghost must hide somewhere within the designated boundaries. The ghost cannot hide inside anywhere. The ghost does not have a flashlight.
  • When the ghost finds a seeking player, that player then turns off the flashlight and takes the ghost's hiding spot. The original ghost is then free to move around the playing field and hide somewhere else.
  • The ghost will then wait in a new spot to tag another player. That player then turns off the flashlight and hides.
  • Once the ghost has been spotted by a player with a flashlight, all the players who are still seeking turn off the flashlight and get some time to hide.
  • The players who are already hiding and are also ghosts will come out. The ghosts will all meet at the home base.
  • Once the original ghost has been spotted the roles of each type of player switch. If you were tagged by the ghost and hiding, you are now a ghost who is looking for the alive players.
  • If you were still an alive player when the ghost was spotted, you now go hide.
  • The ghosts will all go to the home base and count while the alive players hide.
  • As long as it's not too dark and everyone can easily move safely, no one should have flashlights at this stage.
  • If you are running toward the base and get tagged you immediately become a ghost and join the hunt.
  • The first player who gets to home base safely without getting tagged yells out. That player is the winner and gets to start as the ghost the next round.
  • If no one gets to the base safely, then the players pick a new ghost in a way that everyone agrees upon.

Playing with a Storyteller

  • Your designated safe spot, or, home base is where players run to when the ghost is found. It can be a large tree, front stoop, back patio, etc. Try to designate a spot that everyone can physically touch or stand on.
  • The storyteller is in charge of making up a spooky story. The story usually involves a group of people wandering through a graveyard at night.
  • You can pick the storyteller the same way you pick the ghost, or however you think is fair. If someone volunteers to be the storyteller that works too.
  • All of the other players stand at the home base with eyes closed while the ghost and storyteller go choose a hiding place for the ghost. The storyteller needs to know where the ghost is hiding so that this player can lead the others to the ghost.
  • Although everyone's eyes should be closed, it's more fun if the storyteller takes a roundabout route back to home base after leaving the ghost's hiding spot. Not taking a direct path back to base will make it harder for the players to know where the ghost is.
  • The job of the storyteller is to lead the group through the playing area. The storyteller should not go right to the ghost.
  • The storyteller can choose to tell a story without any help, slowly leading the other players to the ghost. But it can be more fun and interactive for everyone if the storyteller asks the players where to go. And then forms a story around the players' decisions.
  • The storyteller may start the story saying something like "A group of brave adventurers set out to search the graveyard for a ghost who was guarding a great treasure. Which way did the adventurers head first?"
  • Then the other players can decide together where to go and look. Once everyone agrees, the storyteller will lead the players to that area. If the ghost is not there, the storyteller can add to the story with something like "The adventurers came upon an old tombstone. The wind began to howl but upon searching it, they found nothing." This will add suspense. The storyteller can even add a clue that will help the players get closer to the ghost.
  • The two people who are tagged will be "it" the next round. Both players will agree who will be ghost and storyteller, respectively.
  • Alternatively, players can decide that the first two players who reach the home base get to be the ghost and storyteller.
  • If no one is tagged, then everyone will agree on a way to choose the next ghost and storyteller.

To play Ghost in the Graveyard, you’ll need at least 3 friends and lots of space to run around and hide. Choose an area to be the boundaries of the graveyard, like part of a local park or a few yards in your neighborhood that are next door to each other. Pick one area to be your safe spot, like a big tree or a piece of playground equipment. Next, you’ll need to choose a player to be the ghost. You can have someone volunteer or choose them some other way, like playing rock, paper, scissors or eenie meenie miney mo. Once you have a ghost, get all the other players to stand around the chosen safe spot, which will be your home base. The ghost will then go and hide somewhere on the playing field, far away from the home base. As the ghost is hiding, have all the other players count “One o’clock, two o’clock, three o’clock” and so on, until they get to 12 o’clock. Then everyone should shout, “Midnight! I hope I don’t see the ghost tonight!” Next, everyone leaves the base to search for the ghost. If anyone gets near the ghost, the ghost will jump out and try to tag them. The first player to see the ghost shouts, “Ghost in the graveyard!” to warn everyone else. The other players have to run away from the ghost and return to home base to avoid getting tagged. Anyone who gets tagged becomes the new ghost. If the ghost doesn’t tag anyone, the last player to get to home base becomes the next ghost. Keep the game going as long as you like. For an extra spooky variant, try playing the game in the dark and search for the ghost with flashlights. Any player who gets tagged has to turn off their flashlight and become a new ghost. You can also ask one of the players to set the mood with a spooky story before you go ghost hunting. To learn how to play a version of Ghost in the Graveyard with flashlights, keep reading! Ghost In The Graveyard Game

Ghost In The Graveyard Game

If Hide and Seek had an opposite, it would be Ghost in the Graveyard. When you play traditional Hide and Seek, everyone except one player who is ‘it’ hides, but in this version, there is only one hider and many seekers. Thanks to its simplicity, you can play Ghost in the Graveyard indoors or anywhere you have at least three players and enough space to run around and hide.

Ghost in the Graveyard is an excellent game to play during the fall ‘spooky’ season and at parties where you have lots of space outdoors or kids playing at night. The darkness adds to the game’s ambiance, but it’s not necessary. You don’t need anything to play with except people. Since you can easily scale up or down to accommodate players, you can use this game for larger groups like school classes. Best of all, anyone can learn to play in just a few minutes, and you’ll get hours of enjoyment. Here is everything you need to know about the Ghost in the Graveyard game.

What is the Ghost In The Graveyard Game?

The Ghosts in the Graveyard Game is a version of hide and seek where you have more seekers than hiders, and the ‘ghost’ who is ‘it’ is the one hiding. Once someone spots the Ghost and calls out, the ‘ghost’ tries to catch (tag) someone in their ‘graveyard.’ You can play this game with as few as three people; all you need is a space to run around with places to hide. See the rules for ghost in the graveyard below.

How to Play Ghost In The Graveyard Game: Step By Step

How do you play ghost in the graveyard?

The purpose of Ghost in the Graveyard is to have fun and run around while most players evade capture. The seekers count together at their ‘base,’ and they go ghost hunting when the count is done. Whoever spots the Ghost calls out a warning. After that, all the players must run or sneak back to base before the Ghost can get them. If the Ghost tags you, then you are it. That means you’ll be the next Ghost. Below are step-by-step instructions on how to play.

  • Collect what you need first. In this case, all you need is three players. Set a boundary to how far the Ghost can go to hide, and choose a base for the ghost hunters to start at.
  • Once all the hunters are at the base, they should face away from the playing area and count together loudly. Typically players count to 50 or 60, but you can adjust the amount of time based on the size of your playing field and the age of your players.
  • The Ghost should run and hide while everyone else is distracted counting. Pick somewhere unexpected where you can see or hear the ghost hunters coming.
  • The players should spread out and go ghost-hunting when the count is over. The goal is to be the first to find a ghost in the Graveyard.
  • The first player to find a ghost should call out, “Ghost in the Graveyard!” Doing this warns everyone else that the Ghost is free and chasing anyone they can catch.
  • Once someone calls out, all the players must run back to base as fast as they can.
  • The Ghost has to try to tag someone so they can be the next Ghost. If they succeed, their turn is over.

Ghost In The Graveyard Rules

Ghost in the Graveyard is a fun, simple game with tons of benefits, including developing spatial awareness, patience, and cooperation. Players also get to run around and use up a lot of energy. You don’t need many rules to play, but we’ve listed some basic guidelines below.

  • If the Ghost tags you, you are ‘it’ for the next round.
  • The Ghost cannot change hiding places (unless you’re playing a specific variation where that is allowed).
  • Always count loudly when you are a seeker so the Ghost knows you are still at the base. Being loud also helps cover up the Ghost’s movements so they can hide better.
  • Never leave the boundaries of the playing field. Keeping everyone within reasonable borders is just common sense safety.
  • Don’t call out until you’re sure you see the Ghost.
  • Although it is not technically forbidden, don’t hide near the base very often. Not only will you get found too quickly, but the players won’t have a reasonable opportunity to get back to safety.

Ghost In The Graveyard Game Variations

Although Ghost in the Graveyard is a variation on the better-known Hide and Seek, there are also other versions of this game. The four variations listed below are designed to add difficulty, make things easier, even the playing field, or keep things pleasant for everyone. You can make up your own variation to adjust any part of the game that isn’t working for your players and space. In summer, a ghost might ‘tag’ with a water gun, or you could count for a group of very young children or even have them sing a silly, spooky song instead if they are still learning numbers. Use these variants as a jumping-off point to make your best version of Ghost in the Graveyard.

Multi-Player Ghost in the Graveyard- If you have a larger group of players, you may want to have more than one Ghost. The easiest way to accomplish this is to line people up and have them count off by fives. The first person in every group is a ghost; the rest can be seekers.

Zombie In The Graveyard- In this variation of the classic game, the ‘ghost’ is actually a ‘zombie.’ This means they can hide and still tag you from where they are concealed. There’s an extra fun creep factor in knowing that if you don’t spot the monster when you pass by, it can still ‘get’ you.

Flag-Ghost in the Graveyard- If you’re concerned players might not tag gently try playing the game flag-football style. Instead of tagging each other, players must pull off a velcroed flag from the person they are ‘catching.’

Moving Ghost in the Graveyard- This version of the game allows a ghost to move from one hiding spot to another. A sufficiently varied playing field can make for more exciting and challenging rounds. Seekers must avoid getting jump-scared by the Ghost and tagged before they can call out when you play this way.

Stacking Ghost in the Graveyard- When you play this game’s ‘stacking’ variation, a ghost can only tag one person per round. However, anyone who is tagged becomes a ghost and stays that way, hiding with the other ghosts every round. Gameplay continues until there is only one player left who isn’t a ghost.

Ghost In The Graveyard Game Tips and Tricks

Whether you use a variation with a large group of people or a classic game with a couple of friends, there are always a few things to remember that can help things stay silly while you play. Ghost in the Graveyard is one of the very few outdoor games that are even better at night so long as everyone watches their step and follows the rules. Here are a few tips and tricks to help make playing Ghost in the Graveyard safer and more fun.

  • Always play in a well-lit area when playing after dark. Tripping hazards are worse at night. It’s best to avoid playing this game somewhere you have trouble seeing or where there’s a lot of debris and uneven ground. No one wants to fall in the dark.
  • Call out where you see the Ghost to help other players.
  • Set the base in a corner or on one side of the playing area. Doing this allows all the ghost hunters to face away from where your Ghost is hiding, so they have a fair chance of remaining undetected.
  • Don’t hesitate to start running if you see the Ghost. You can call out as you move, but standing there will probably get you tagged.
  • Use a smaller field for younger players. They will have more fun if they don’t have to run across a football field to get back to base. It’s also important to know that very young players, kindergarten and first grade age, may not be able to count to 50 or 100 yet.
  • Don’t forget that ghost hunters can be sneaky too. Not letting the Ghost know where you are can become a significant advantage, especially if they run over to where the base is before you can get back.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a Halloween or spooky-themed game for kids (or adults), there’s no better option than Ghost in the Graveyard. This overlooked and underrated game is ideal for outdoor fall festivities, but you don’t need to wait until the leaves change to play unless you want to. Ghost in the Graveyard is fun and active, but best of all, it is simple. All you need is a couple of friends and a place to play with lots of hiding spots. You can easily change things up with a variation of the game to make it easier or more challenging. Better still, Ghost in the Graveyard is easy to scale up since it doesn’t have teams. You can include new players anytime.

Film review: ghost in the graveyard (2019).

Matt Hudson 11/19/2017 Film Reviews

a ghost in the graveyard

The town of Mt. Moriah comes under the thumb of Martha, a ghost who comes back to haunt the teens, who witnessed her death as children, during a “game” of ‘Ghost in the Graveyard.’

WARNING: This review may contain information that would be considered “spoilers”.

Ten years ago, a group of kids decide to play “ Ghost in the Graveyard ”, a game that mixes tag, hide-and-seek, and general creeping each other out. Sally is “The Ghost”, so she hides inside a mausoleum. Little does she know that there are witches holding a ritual inside the structure.

When Sally jumps out to chase her friends, they see a witch appear behind her, and all Hell breaks loose. Kids are running for their lives, Sally is still playing the game, and Little Martha falls into an open grave, where she dies.

a ghost in the graveyard

Now she haunts the cemetery.

Sally is sent away because she kept seeing Little Martha everywhere.

10 years later, Sally returns home to her father, Charlie, and her brother, Billy. And a baby of unclear parentage. Sally’s been away, but where is not stated. She is back for her senior year in high school, even though the whole town thinks she is insane and most think she was responsible for the death of Little Martha.

Before you can say, “John Hughes”, we have teen angst as the class snot, Zoe, decides to give crazy Sally the business, with an added bit of cruelty because of Sally’s long-time relationship with Reed, Zoe’s current boyfriend.

Meanwhile, a kid riding his bike through the cemetery on a dare is killed in broad daylight. Cops instantly assume the attack came from witches or had supernatural overtones.

a ghost in the graveyard

Sally and Zoe start seeing Little Martha. Sally’s family are all acting weird. Witch activity is on the rise.

Will Reed dump Zoe for Sally? Where has Sally been for 10 years? How did they get Jake Busey to be so calm? Whose freaking baby is it?

Let me start by saying “Ghost in the Graveyard” is, for the most part, wonderful to look at. Excellent location work in the cemetery and the surrounding environments. The camera moves through the scenery with confidence. The changing leaves and the deep gold natural lighting make for some stunning images.

When the camera turns on people, the results are less amazing, though it is clear that the filmmakers know how to use a camera. A few shots of conversations have good framing and help maintain visual appeal.

The lead actors are okay. Jake Busey always seems out of place, even when playing weird and creepy characters. As a devoted father, he just does not fit, but he gives a dandy attempt, so he gets kudos for effort.

a ghost in the graveyard

The two best performers in “ Ghost in the Graveyard ” are Kellie Berglund (Sally) and Olivia Larsen (Zoe). Sally is a clueless Mary Sue-type, so Berglund’s efforts are stymied by poor writing/dialogue options though you can see her talent slip out in some of the better written segments. Larsen is giving ample meat to tuck into with Zoe, who changes from bitch to troubled teen to pure evil during the film. The film might have benefitted from having her character take the lead as Zoe and the actress portraying her are both more intriguing than anything else in the movie.

The script, penned by director Charlie Comparetto (he also wrote the novel from which the script was derived or vice versa), is the film’s biggest enemy. While there are a few good ideas in there, the bulk of the script plays out like inept fan fiction written by someone who did not think through the most basic elements of the story, plot, character motivations, or basic common sense.

Sally has been away for 10 years with occasional visits home. Any discussion of this? Some exposition, perhaps? No. When she begins to question what is happening to her (after 10 years, why bother suddenly?), Little Martha conveniently hands her exactly the information she needs. No need for the character to struggle at all. Yet she chooses to ignore information that would upend most people’s sense of reality because she wants to be a normal teenage kid instead of pursuing facts, until it fits the needs of the plot, of course.

One of Zoe’s followers hands her a letter sent to Charlie, Sally’s dad. It reveals Sally has been the ward of a religious group for the last 10 years. First, how the Hell did this random teenage girl get someone’s personal mail when they don’t even hang out with Sally? Second, if Sally has been raised by a group called the Seven Sisters, Sally must be brain damaged to not wonder what in the world is going on.

The cemetery is supposedly haunted. Everyone knows it. Kids can’t even pass through without getting killed. Witches openly use the mausoleum for sacrifices. Martha’s head stone reads “In Memory of Little Martha”; what kind of inhuman monster would put that on a headstone in 2009? Hell, even the city cops avoid the place. Why is this place still functioning?

a ghost in the graveyard

THE BABY! There is a baby that makes any appearance around the 45-minute mark. Whose baby is it? At one point, one of Zoe’s minions makes a comment about Sally’s 9-month absence. Is it Sally’s? If so, that complicates the point of Sally being a target of witches as her kid would have the same bloodline. In fact, having a kid would kind of wreck that “purity” element that comes up in connection to Sally. Of course, the baby would be perfect and “without sin”.

Let’s not forget the fact Sally did not carry the baby in when she arrived. Bad mother? Half of the time, I kept wondering, “If all of these people are here and there, who is watching the baby?”

If it isn’t Sally’s, why include indications that it is her kid? Why not drop a line of dialogue as to why the baby is there and move on?

At every step of the script, more and more questions arise, questions like those I have asked above. By the end of the film, my head hurt from stumbling through – well, missing plot points. Not holes, mind you; we’re talking “Reel Missing” lapses in logic and narrative flow.

My comments may seem harsh. Charlie Comparetto has shown he can direct, but he needs someone else to handle the writing. With the right script, I think he could break into the bigger leagues as he knows how to visually create a world that captures the eye and the imagination. Not a bad feat for his first feature film.

Where Should You Play Ghost in the Graveyard?

The very first question that people have is where they can play Ghost in the Graveyard. The best thing about this game is that you can play it anywhere, be it indoors or outdoors. It tends to be more exciting playing it outdoors and perhaps in the dark.

Choose any space in the outdoors. It could be a backyard, the space between a couple of houses or any spot in the neighborhood. You need to designate an area where you will be playing the game. It is always a good idea to select an area where you can find plenty of spaces to hide. This will make the game far more fun, interesting and challenging.

Who Can Play the Game?

Literally, anybody can play this game because it is very easy to understand, learn and play. In order to be able to play Ghost in the Graveyard, you just need to  know how to count , be able to run fast, and how to find a good hiding spot. At least three people are required to play the game, but you know how they say, the more, the merrier.

A large group of people makes for a much longer game , which eventually turns out to be more enjoyable than a small group of only three people. You can even get your whole family to play this game since there are no age limits, but it is better to let the kids have some fun.

Ideally, you should get all the kids from the neighborhood together because this will give everyone the chance to interact with each other and spend quality time outside.

Ghost in the graveyard variations

THE RULES OF  GHOST IN THE GRAVEYARD

Cover.PNG

Ghost in the Graveyard is played with three or more friends in any outdoor area.  It is especially fun at night in the dark.  The object of the game is to find the ghost – a player who is hiding.  The player who finds the ghost’s hiding spot, yells “Ghost in the Graveyard” to alert the other players.  The player who finds the ghost is safe.  All the other players must race back to base.  The ghost tries to tag someone before they do and that player is IT for the next game.

Select a base for all the players to run to when the ghost is found.  There should be a designated spot they have to touch to be safe from the ghost.

Determine the neighborhood boundaries for the game and make sure all the players under that this is where the ghost must hide.  The ghost may not hide inside and any player who goes inside during a game is automatically IT.

One player is selected to be IT or the ghost.  That player runs and hides within the boundaries.  To determine the first-person IT, players put their feet in a circle.  One leader uses a rhyme to disqualify players until only one player is left.  The leader touches one foot in the circle for each word.  Here is an example:

“Bubble gum, bubble gum in a dish. How many pieces do you wish?”

The player’s foot the leader lands on get to pick a number.  The leader counts out that number and then says “…and you are out.” The player that is landed on for the final word is safe and does not have to be IT.  The rhyme continues until only one person is left – that player is the first ghost.

Playing the Game:

To start a new Ghost in the Graveyard game, all the players must close their eyes and count down from 50.  Everyone yells,“ ready or not, here we come” and the game begins.  The players run and search for the ghost.

Players search the yards for the ghost.  The player that finds the ghost’s hiding spot yells out “Ghost in the Graveyard” as loud as possible.  The player that finds the ghost is safe.  All the other players race back and touch base.

The ghost chases players as they return to base and must tag one player, who becomes the ghost for the next game.  If all the players return to base before the ghost tags anyone, the ghost is IT again.

Once everyone is back to base and the ghost has been determined, players start to count, the new ghost runs to hide and the game begins again.

It is important to hide well and draw all the players away from the base as they search.  If a player yells “Ghost in the Graveyard” to the wrong person, they are automatically IT.

This post will tell you how to play the Ghost in the Graveyard game , a traditional game that is one of the most popular plays for kids .

I have written tons of articles about fun plays and other fun things to do with friends on our site here , including one about outdoor party fun activities that have been read over a couple of thousand times already. So, believe me when I say that this night game is an amazing graveyard game to bond with friends and family.

Let the fun begin!

What is it? - #What-is-it?

What is Ghost in the Graveyard Game?

Ghost in the Graveyard is a traditional children's game similar to Tag and Hide-and-Seek, except that is played at night time. The goal of this game is to find the "it" hiding within the play zone. The player who finds the "ghost" should alert the other participants by shouting, "Ghost in the Graveyard!". Whoever gets tagged, or is the last to reach the designated "safe zone", will be the next "it".

Ghost in the Graveyard Play Rules

Anyone, young and old alike, can join this fun game. Also, more players mean more fun!

  • Choose a home base where all players will run once they find the "it" player. There should also be a specific spot in the base/safe zone that they should touch so they won't be the next "it."
  • While the rest of the players are in the safe zone, the "it" should hide in a secret spot within the play zone. Once the "it" finds their hiding spot, players chant "One o'clock, two o'clock, three o'clock..." until they reach midnight. After that, they will say, "Midnight, midnight, I hope I catch/see/don't see a ghost tonight!" and then leave the base to search for the "it."
  • The "it" has to tag a player and be the next Ghost. If the player sees the "it," they should "Ghost in the Graveyard!". All of the players have to run back to the home base. The last player who reaches the home base, or is tagged by the Ghost, will be the new "it" in the next game.
  • Continue playing the game until everyone gets to become the Ghost.

Have you already chosen a play zone? Have you already decided who's going to be the "it"? Are the rest of the players ready? Then, you need to consider these 3 things first before playing Ghost in the Graveyard.

Things to prepare before the game

All of the players should understand how to play this game. Before starting the game, participants should also look for a spacious outdoor area. Players also can use a flashlight to ensure safety while running around and searching for the "it."

The best area to play the game

The best area to play this fun game is in an open outdoor area so everyone can run freely, and the "it" has lots of spots to hide at. It can preferably be in someone's yard or a specific location in a neighborhood park.

Designate a spot in the playing field that will serve as the "base" where everyone should race back to when the "it" is found. It can be on the front porch, back patio, or a large tree in the backyard or park, anywhere that all players can stand on or physically touch.

You can also set a rule that if one of the players goes beyond the assigned boundary, they will be eliminated or become the "it" in the next round.

Choosing the players

At least three players can play this scaringly fun game, one of whom will play as the "it." The more game participants, the better and more chaotic fun it will be.

Players get to decide who becomes the "it" will be through the following:

  • Ask someone to volunteer.
  • Play rock, paper, scissors
  • Gather everyone in a circle using each player's hands or feet. One of the players says a rhyme while tapping each hand or foot for each word. When the verse ends, the participant removes a hand or foot. Repeat the steps until there is only one hand or foot left. That player will be the next "it."
  • The next "it" will be the one who got tagged by the Ghost, or the last one to reach the home base.

How to start the game

The participants must stand within the designated "safe zone" while the ghost finds a hiding spot. The players will then have to find the ghost within the play area... and that's when the fun starts!

Add more fun by setting up Halloween vibe decorations.

2. Play scary background music.

Top up your game a notch by donning Halloween costumes. No need for elaborate costumes. Try wearing a scary mask or make your own from your closet. Find someone who can also do makeup for the ghosts for maximum playing impact.

Ghost in the Graveyard Safety Tips

We all want to have fun with every game we play, whether indoors or outdoors. However, everyone's safety should also be a top priority, especially when playing outdoor activities (and in the dark, too). Here are safety tips every player should remember when playing this outdoor game:

This game is scary! Make sure everyone is prepared. Get the parent's permission before allowing kids to join.

Expect several jump scares and even accidental trips when playing in a play area with little to no lighting. That is why safety should be a priority during the activity. Make sure everyone is safe and injury-free during and after playing the game.

Find a safe outdoor space with no holes or hills that could cause accidents, falls, and injuries. Ask the parents' permission before letting kids join the game.

Fun Variants of Ghost in the Graveyard

There are other ways to enjoy this traditional outdoor game. For example, you can use flashlights during the game if you are not familiar with the play area or when the players are young children.

You can also opt to divide the group into two, of which half of the players will play as ghosts, and the rest will have to look for them.

Or, instead of the players looking for the ghosts, try doing it the other way around (the "it" searching for the players hiding -- similar to the traditional hide-and-seek game).

Meanwhile, here are fun variants of the Ghost in the Graveyard:

Variant #1: Santa in his Sleigh

Santa in his Sleigh

Another traditional game you can play with your friends is Santa in his Sleigh. Perfect this holiday season, adults and kids can enjoy this guessing game.

  • First, you will need a small sleigh figurine or ornament. Have the participants form a large circle. You can choose to play inside or outside the house.
  • Then, choose a person who will be blindfolded. Hand the figurine to another participant. The player with the figurine should say, "Santa, Santa, where's your sleigh? A thief has come to take it away." Then the blindfolded participant has to guess who has the figurine.
  • The blindfolded participant has three chances to guess the participant with the sleigh figurine. If the guess is right, the participant with the sleigh will be the next to be blindfolded. Otherwise, the sleigh figurine will be given to another participant, and the game should start over again.

Variant #2: Prison Break

Prison Break

Prison Break or JailBreak is another fun outdoor activity. Everyone, from kids and the kids-at-heart, can play and enjoy this activity without the props needed!

  • Invite players -- the more, the merrier! Choose who will be the captain of each team. Make sure that the teams have the same number of participants.
  • Choose a designated spot that will serve as the "prison." That space should accommodate all of the players in each team.
  • Decide which team will hide first and look for the other team. The seeking team will count until the hiding team has already found a hiding spot. Once done counting, it's time to find the hiding players.
  • If they find the hiding players, the opposing team members should catch them. The hiding players are allowed to run and not be caught by the opposing team. Once a participant from the seeking team sees a hiding player, the former has to hold on to the latter and say, "1,2,3... You're my man!"
  • The captured players must stay in "prison." To "free" the participants in prison, an uncaught participant should touch the jail and shout "Prison break!". The prisoned players can run free again.
  • The game ends when everyone in the hiding team is caught. You can restart the game by switching sides; the seeking team will be the one to hide and vice versa.

Ghosts In The Graveyard (Rules, Instructions & Tips)

Ghosts in the graveyard is a traditional game that every child enjoys. This article consists of guidelines on how to play the game, rules, tips, and variations to the classic game. After reading this article you will be fully equipped to have as much fun as you can with this game.

Stuck together

How to play ghost in the graveyard.

‘Ghosts in a graveyard’ requires a minimum of 3 players.

The ideal setting is outdoors. A large indoor space with places to hide will work as well. If you are playing outdoors, begin by setting a boundary for the game. It need not be precise but ensure that all players have a fair idea of the space being used for the game.

Now, designate a space as the base. The base must be a place where all players can fit. Find a long wall or a thick tree that all players can get their hands on.

Choose a player to be the ‘ Ghost ‘. The method to choose can vary – claps, numbering, and picking, chits, etc. The Ghost must find a place to hide in the designated space. All other players must stay at the base.

The players must slowly chant the hours till midnight – one o clock, two o clock, and so on. Once they reach midnight, they must chant – ‘Midnight, midnight, I hope I catch a ghost tonight!’ As they chant, players must stay at the base with their eyes closed.

After chanting, all players must go in search of the Ghost. If someone sees the Ghost, they yell,’ Ghost in the graveyard!’ All players must run towards the home base. The Ghost must try to tag any player before they reach home base.

The Ghost cannot tag players after they reach the base. The object of the base players is to run towards the home base without being tagged by the Ghost. Meanwhile, the aim of the Ghost is to tag at least one player before they return to home base.

The Ghost can change positions discreetly across the space when the other players are looking for them. To make things hard for the others, the Ghost can silently creep up on the players and tag them.

The person that the Ghost tags becomes the Ghost in the next round of the game. If the Ghost does not tag anyone, play another round with the same Ghost. Play as many rounds as the group wishes.

Ghosts in The Graveyard Rules & Warnings

  • Ensure that all players are familiar with the designated place where the game will take place. Going outside the boundary is not allowed. If the game is being played outdoors, it may be risky for players to venture outside the boundaries.
  • Indoors or outdoors, make sure the space where the game is being played is clean and not littered with too many obstacles. Survey the space thoroughly if the space is not very familiar.
  • The people who have not been tagged in all the rounds played, wins the overall game of Ghosts In The Graveyard.
  • Ensure that all players are familiar with the rules. Carry torches and headlights for the safety of all players.
  • The game is better enjoyed in the dark. It makes for a perfect camping or sleepover game.

More Games for Kids: Two Truths And A Lie (150+ Examples & Ideas)

Tips To Play Ghosts In The Graveyard

  • The game is best enjoyed by a larger group of players. Though it can be played with a small group of 3 players, having 10-12 players enhances the experience of the game.
  • Choose a space that most players are familiar with. If the game is being played at night, ensure that you have permission to be in the space at that time.
  • If you want to continue the same game the next night, keep a score of who was Ghost how many times.
  • All players must have their parents’ permission and must not wander off on their own.

Variations Of Ghosts In The Graveyard

Working in teams.

Divide the whole group into two teams. One team is the Ghost Team and the others are the Base Team. The Ghost Team goes and hides as the Base Team chants at home base. If even one Ghost from the team is spotted, all Ghosts must try to tag the Base Team. Keep score of who was tagged and who was not. Change positions in the second round. This variation works better for larger groups of 20-25 people.

Reversing the roles

To spice things up, reverse the roles of the Ghost and the other players. Make the Ghost chant at home base. All other players must go hide. The Ghost must try and find all players before they reach home base.

This variation proves a challenge for the players looking for the Ghost. Have all the players hold hands as they look for the Ghost. When the Ghost is spotted, they can let go and run to home base before being tagged by the Ghost.

Ghost In The Graveyard is a classic game that children of all ages will enjoy. Since it is best played in the nighttime, the game is best played during a sleepover or at camp. Various types of groups can enjoy this game. Go get your ghost!

My rating of this movie is a four out of ten stars. 19 out of 24 found this helpful. Was this review helpful? Sign in to vote.
