Colin, We had a wonderful time on Free Wings. The boat was in excellent condition. The Captain and crew were amazing. Nothing was too much trouble. The Chef was great (even in his small kitchen!!) Igor zenzerović.

Igor Zenzerović, born in Pula in 1974, he fell in love with the sea at the age of 8 and sailed with the smaller class boats such as the Optimist, 420, and Laser. This passion continued with larger boats and participation in numerous sailing regattas. Needless to say, he has sailed as Captain of other sailing boats for 13 years.

He has been with Free Wings since its purchase and was instrumental in all steps required for her refit in 2016/2017. This includes drydocking, sand blasting and new paint cycles of the hull, maintenance of all the vessel’s machinery and equipment as well as internal renewal of all public spaces and guest cabins. This resulted in getting the RINA Class – commercial.

A man of culture and passion for the arts like cinema, visual arts and music, he manages his duties with care and capability. He always devotes his attention to the needs of the people with whom he is working with, as he does with his guests during the cruise.

He is extremely familiar with the navigation areas along the Italian, Greek, Montenegro and Croatian coasts and he speaks fluent Croatian, Italian and English.

Ivan was born in Rijeka in 1980. He has 14 years of experience in the yachting industry, working both as a deckhand and a cook. Ivan can offer strong experience and reliability on the deck. His experience so far, has made him realize that his skills and knowledge allow him to go even further, seeking new opportunities and moving up in the industry.

His cooking style is Mediterranean cuisine, with a touch of new trends. Years long working experience on a boat in the Venetian Laguna, created in him a style that puts an accent on small details, that are the basis of Mediterranean delights.

The last spice of his plates is good humor.

Description.

SY FREE WINGS is a remarkable sailing yacht built by the famous New Zealand shipyard Thackwray Yachts to a very high standard and build for safe and comfortable world cruising. Thackwray Yachts has built famous sailing yachts and tall ships like S/Y “SPIRIT OF NEW ZEALAND”, S/Y “AURASTEL”, S/Y “CHARDONNAY” and S/Y “AURASTEL”.

Originally launched in 1984 and always cared for by a professional crew she was sold to her actual owner in fall 2016 and sailed to Pula to perform a thorough refit to improve her technical and overall condition. 

Class Society RINA was appointed to survey the yacht and to obtain RINA class certification as COMMERCIAL YACHT. Malta Maritime Authority Surveyor was appointed to survey the yacht and obtain Flag State certification as COMMERCIAL YACHT.

SY FREE WINGS is rigged as a ketch and all sails are hydraulically furled, enabling a small crew to run her with ease in all conditions.

Her large deck space invites for relaxation either on the bow or aft. With the well protected and comfortable al fresco seating area aft and the cozy deck house guests can enjoy their time on board in highest comfort yet are able to enjoy the scenery around them. The full beam central salon with a large dining table and seating opposite enhance the feel of space and comfort on board. Accommodation is offered with two very large, en-suite VIP cabins and two smaller guest cabins with en-suite bathrooms for the most discerning guests.

I realize that Moscow is on the Volga River, which connects to the Caspian Sea, but I’m wondering how foreign vessels can reach it? Or do foreign travel companies just buy a yacht that’s already "in the system"?

From the Caspian Sea, Gary, yachts come up the Volga then on to the Oka River and enter a tributary call the Moskva ("Moscow" in Russian) River. Alternate route is Volga to man-made Moscow Canal (which connects Volga to Moskva River). The big superyachts can’t get into the city limits because the river is only 3 inches deep. Just outside of the city, however, the water is 6 meters deep, perfect for large yachts. Yacht passengers easily travel into the city by limousine. (I imagine thoughts of hovercrafts, etc are a consideration for someday…) James Bond, anyone?

The bodies of the six women were found off the coast of Aceh province, search and rescue officials said in a statement. Five bodies were found over the weekend.

The United Nations refugee agency confirmed with survivors that the women had been on their boat, staff member Faisal Rahman said.

The agency has said the boat carrying Rohingya Muslims left a refugee camp in Bangladesh but capsized on Wednesday. Fishermen and search and rescue workers rescued 75 people on Thursday after they huddled overnight on the boat’s overturned hull.

U.N. agencies on Friday said at least 70 were feared missing or dead.

About 1 million of the predominately Muslim Rohingya live in Bangladesh as refugees from Myanmar. They include about 740,000 who fled a brutal counterinsurgency campaign in 2017 by Myanmar’s security forces, who were accused of committing mass rapes and killings.

The Rohingya minority in Myanmar faces widespread discrimination. Most are denied citizenship.

Indonesia, like Thailand and Malaysia, is not a signatory to the United Nations’ 1951 Refugee Convention and is not obligated to accept them. However, the country generally provides temporary shelter to refugees in distress.
