Sailing Simplicity at its Finest

Long time single handed sailors love the M36 because within 5 minutes they can be off the dock and sailing. Beginners are equally as enthralled because the M36 is simple to sail, simple to learn on and immediately rewarding with her straightforward sail handling and control lines that are lead under deck to electric winches at the helmsman’s fingertips. In addition, all instruments are intelligently arrayed to quickly provide all the information you need.

More Than a Daysailer

Take her overnight! The elegantly appointed optional V-berth, standard fridge and enclosed head make her far more versatile than a mere daysailer. The M36 also has a deep, safe and comfortable cockpit which accommodates six adults allowing you to safely entertain your guests.

Beautifully Appointed Interior

No detail inside her cabin is overlooked. Large safety glass windows and a huge foredeck hatch flood the interior with natural light. The Herreshoff style interior is finished elegantly with white bulkheads, solid cherry trim and marvelously varnished hull sheathing. Twin port and starboard settees are ergonomically designed for comfortable lounging (or sleeping), and well placed reading lights invite you to enjoy the morning paper or catch up on some afternoon reading. Generous storage can be found in the forepeak. An alternative layout converts the forepeak space into a beautiful and functional V-Berth for overnight stays.

Remarkably Simple to Dock

The M36 does exactly what you tell her to do. She backs straight (no prop walk), turns on a dime and docks like a pro. In short, she maneuvers under power as responsively as she does under sail making her a pleasure to both sail and to bring back to port. Even the fenders are just a ‘clip’ away; pad eyes and stainless steel rub rails are placed on deck for ‘clip-on’ polar-fleece-covered fenders. What could be easier!

Perfectly Engineered

At Morris Yachts we’re not just boat builders; we’re sailors and boat owners too. Perhaps this is the reason the M36 is so intuitively designed with the owner in mind. Often overlooked by other builders, access to the engine, through-hulls and electrical systems is superb.

morris 36 sailboat for sale

As with all sailing boats built by Morris Yachts, the M36 offers peace of mind. You are onboard one of the most seaworthy boats in the world. Setting the industry standard, Morris Yachts’ level of engineering, fit and finish sets the benchmark by which other builders measure themselves. Morris craftsmen and engineers demand only the finest equipment and use the most modern techniques and technology during the boat building process, proving that the beauty of a Morris is not only skin deep but integrated throughout all facets of the vessel.

M36 Modern ClassicIt is said that imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. When the M36 Modern Classic was first introduced in 2004, she was the only daysailer that featured a self-tacking jib, sail handling systems and helm control pods that are now often copied, but never perfected. Morris Yachts’ quality construction, together with her Sparkman & Stephens design pedigree, guarantees a boat of lasting value that will turn heads in every harbor. SAILING SIMPLICITY AT ITS FINEST Long time single handed sailors love the M36 because within 5 minutes they can be off the dock and sailing.

Hull and Deck

Sparkman & Stephens design heritage with renowned Morris Yachts build quality means that naval architecture, engineering, construction and finish are top of industry standard. Hand laid fiberglass hull with vinylester resin and structural foam core makes a stiff and light laminate. The foam cored deck is a one-piece part off a female mold. The teak decks (cockpit sole and weather decks) are glued to the fiberglass subdeck thus minimizing fasteners. The cockpit is designed for ease of sailing while also offering plenty of seating for guests. All lines are lead aft to the winch islands (with rope clutches) within arms reach of the helmsperson. Rapture has been improved for easier singlehanding: jib sheets are double ended and run directly to the electric secondaries while the main sheet is double ended at the electric primaries (both port and starboard) so both sails can be trimmed while driving from either side. The boom vang is also double ended and lead aft to cam cleats on both sides of the helm. The 5'3" fin keel with bulb adds 5300 lbs of ballast while the spade rudder, built of carbon fiber, allows finger tip steering. Hull is Awlgrip Flag Blue Boot stripe is Alwgrip Cream Bottom was stripped, barrier coated and two coats of Pettit Vivid antifouling applied (2023)

Fiscal Stray Morris 36 1985

Specification.

“Fiscal Stray” is a well-loved part of the current owner’s family who adopted her into their family and have loved her for many wonderful years. Selling her now to someone who will adopt her and give her the continued care and attention is only necessary because of age and health issues of the owners and not the boat. Morris has a great reputation for building a solid boat which with appropriate attention will outlive multiple owners. The Nanni engine replaced the original one in 2006. Now showing approx 5600 hours runs like a top. Currently she has been fully winterized and will be on the hard in St. Michaels, Md with full winter cover.

Manufacturer Provided Description

Designed as a serious offshore cruiser with shoal-draft capability, the Morris 36’s lines and weight distribution were computer optimized to provide excellent performance on all points of sail. The boat has a delicate balance of crisp, clean traditional lines and a modern, fast, responsive underbody. To maximize performance, the design offers a transom stern with the added sailing length of a counter stern. There are two keel configurations offered, the standard fin or optional Scheel keel. The bulwarks are a minimum of 5 inches high, providing sure footing when on the foredeck. The cockpit is thoughtfully proportioned combining comfort and protection for the crew. Available with either sloop or cutter rig, the standard 36 has a high aspect ratio masthead rig with shrouds moved well inboard for clean side decks and narrow sheeting angles. Below deck there are a number of interior layouts available. Even if the traditional pilot berth layout is selected, most things in the interior can still be altered. To enhance the stiffness designed into the hull and deck, the designer specifies a matrix of double-bonded preconstructed cabinets and bulkheads fiber-glass bonded directly to the hull and deck with triaxial DBM. The care that goes into every Morris 36 is obviously time consuming, but the result is a yacht built for longevity and to hold her value through the years.

Cruising on “Fiscal Stray”

Cruising Beyond the Bay

“You can do it!!!  There is a whole world out there to explore.  Whether you intend to take your boat  south down the ICW to North Carolina or Charleston or on to Miami and maybe the Bahamas or north up to  Long Island Sound,  Maine or Buzzards  Bay, you can do it.  Figure out where you can go and carve out a plan.”

The owner of “Fiscal Stray has written several BLOGS on his web site which are a great resource for someone thinking of cruising beyond the local waters.

Sailing Magazine November 19 2008 By John Kretschmer

“Mention the Morris 36 these days and most sailors conjure images of the spectacular new Sparkman & Stephens designed daysailer/weekender being built by the highly respected Maine builder. However, the original Morris 36, which is better known as the Morris Justine, is no slouch and just happens to be the company’s best-selling model to date. A graceful Chuck Paine design, the Justine 36 is superbly engineered and well proportioned. It is just large enough to be a genuine cruising boat with a nice turn of speed but it is small enough to be nimble and easily handled. Whether your sailing schedule allows for an afternoon gliding along Penobscot Bay or a month making your way to Nova Scotia, the Justine 36 will be right at home.”

Owners Comments

We have owned Fiscal Stray since 1999.  We are the third owner.  Tom Morris, the builder, and Chuck Paine, the designer, set out to provide sailors with a safe boat which can also be competitive – especially on long courses.  They were, in our opinion, successful.  Sailing Magazine’s John Kretschmer reviewed the Morris 36 as a used boat a few years ago.  The review can be found here:  https://sailingmagazine.net/article-576-morris-36.html

We have sailed Fiscal Stray out of Saint Michaels, Maryland around the Chesapeake and North to Maine, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.  When we went out of the Bay we tended to anchor and enjoy the least popular places.  You can find a description of one of our trips south and one north at www.todsails.com.  Just click where the home page tells you to and select the part you want to read.  We made many trips both north and south but only documented one each so far.

What follows is an abbreviated description of our 2019 trip to Nova Scotia.  We left St. Michaels on July 2 and headed north.  We made the Coast Guard station at Cape May on 7/4/19.  Going north from Cape May we prefer the outside route but Chris Parker, our SSB radio router told us we needed to be in shelter sooner rather than later.  We sailed to Atlantic Highlands.  The next morning we left when the tides were favorable for the East River..  Heading up Long Island sound we hit Jamestown, RI, went over to Newport,  did some shopping, and left for Marion on 7/11.  We stayed put at Marion YC due to weather.

We left for Ptown and rented a mooring.  We left the mooring at 11:30 and headed for Tenants Harbor where we picked up a mooring and ran into Chuck Paine.  On to Rockland where we provisioned.  We left the mooring at 10:00 and joined our OCC (Ocean Cruising Club) friends for the sail to NS.  We stopped at Lunenburg to check in to Canada. Next stop Halifax and the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron.  The  OCC cruisers and some boats from the RNSYS then cruised in company.  We had a wonderful time and met many new friends.  We left at 0800 08/06/19  from Shelbourn NS for NE Harbor Maine.  We enjoyed NE Harbor and then Camden.  We then did an OCC cruise stopping at some wonderful anchorages including Maple Juice Cove and the Basin.

We had turned around and headed south.  We had some weather – expected and predicted but anchored with a bit of chain out.  We had some  nice stops: New Bedford, Great Salt Pond, and Essex for example.  We stayed put when weather indicated it was a good idea.  There was a storm on the Atlantic so we stayed on the Sound.  FS then moved from Port Washington to Still Pond – 232 nm in 35 hrs averaging 6.6 knots.  We made it home to St. Michaels on 9/11/19,  Our trip covered 2248 nm and took 71 days.  We spent 2 nights at a dock.  We had done 5 overnights.

We made numerous trips north and many south to the Bahamas.

A prospective purchaser might be interested in how the boat does racing.  Gust Stringos on Bluebird has done 13 Bermuda races doing single handed races and races where he goes over single handed and sails back double handed. Tom Vander Saln on Yankee Girl (the former Next Boat) has done 8 Bermuda races.  In 2023 Gust did first in class and first in fleet in the single handed class. He has also taken silver in 2017 and 2016.  I don’t have complete records beyond that.  Bluebird has won the Around the Island race on Penobscot Bay with Chuck Paine as crew.  Bluebird has the same keel configuration and stick as Fiscal Stray

2005 Morris 36 sloop

  • Description

Seller's Description

GONE WITH THE WIND is a beautiful example of the Sparkman & Stevens designed Morris M36 Daysailer. One of the last designs that Olin Stephens worked on, the M36 is the epitome of elegant simplicity with a graceful combination of classic lines and modern design and boat building. All control lines are led under deck to two winches at the helm, allowing the boat to be easily sailed by one person without ever leaving the wheel while the large open cockpit with over six foot seats provide plenty of room for family and friends. A North full batten main sail with lazyjacks and a self-tacking roller furled jib make setting sail quick easy and fun

Equipment: Garmin autopilot Garmin GPS chart plotter with radar Garmin knot depth AWI Lewmar ST electric winches (2) Refrigeration 12 volt North sails Full cover

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Morris M36 transom

Broker Eric Roos at Lyman-Morse is promoting the Morris M36 Masquerade , a 2006 build that’s for sale out of Vineyard Haven, Massachusetts, at an asking price of $320,000.

The Sparkman & Stephens design is a one-owner vessel with a modern fin keel and carbon-fiber spade rudder. “ Masquerade is very competitive on the race course, yet easily handled by one,” Roos states in the listing. “Adorned with just enough high-gloss varnished teak, she is easy to maintain and still turns heads in every harbor.”

Morris M36 boom

Features include in-boom mainsail furling and a self-tacking jib. All control lines run belowdecks and directly to the helm, a setup that allows the skipper to easily raise the main, roll out the jib, adjust the vang and backstay, and trim both sails from the helm.”

Inside, the cabin includes a day head; a galley with a stainless steel freshwater sink, a 12-volt refrigerator and stowage; and settees for lounging or sleeping. There’s additional stowage in the forepeak. Masquerade ’s décor is done in Herreshoff style, with mahogany trim and white bulkheads.

Morris M36 interior

Construction-wise, Masquerade has a handlaid composite hull. Layers of fiberglass and three-quarter-inch structural foam core material are hand-laminated and hand-rolled with Hydrex vinylester resin. The hull is reinforced with two pairs of continuous longitudinal structural foam stringers that are fiberglassed to the hull’s interior. There’s also a fiberglass-reinforced L-frame keel floor that’s laminated into the hull and bunk faces.

Morris M36 cockpit

All the major bulkheads are glassed into the hull. Nonstructural bulkheads and furniture are affixed with 3M urethane adhesive. The deck has a reinforced fiberglass foam core and is built with one-piece construction.

For cruisers in locations where overhead clearance is an issue, the mast head of Masquerade is 49 feet, 8 inches above the waterline. (Add another 2 feet, 6 inches for antennas.) Bridge clearance is listed as 52 feet, 2 inches.

Morris M36 cockpit

Additional power can be created through a removable solar panel, which plugs into a waterproof DC plug to power a 7-amp battery charge controller. This setup also feeds the house battery bank.

The main 12-volt  distribution panel is fitted with a BTM panel to provide battery status. It includes individual breaker switches for all 12-volt functions.

At the transom, Masquerade has a 21-horsepower Yanmar 3YM20FC engine. Fuel capacity is 12 gallons.
