Are hobbies dying.

Like many of you, I spent a fair amount of time over the holidays connecting with family, friends and former colleagues. After dozens of conversations with friends in their 30s, I walked away with an alarming, but not-too-surprising, realization: most don’t have any hobbies to speak of. Nearly every conversation went something like this: “It’s been a while, man, what have you been up to?” “Oh, you know, same old, just working a lot.” “Alright, fair enough, how is the job going?” “Eh, it’s going.” Or “You know, same old, same old.” “Have you been doing anything fun?” “No, not really, you?” It was clear that so many people in my age bracket are soaking up all their time, energy and effort with work and Netflix. Now, I put a lot of value in working hard and…

Making Waves Through History

Whether you’re underway on a family boating trip, stuck commuting, or just home cooking a meal, stories can transform where you are, taking you to different times and worlds you’ve never experienced. And for those of us who particularly want to plunge deeper into the history of our boating world, you won’t get many more leagues under the sea than you can with the latest episodes of the Power & Motoryacht Podcast. Over the last few interviews, our editors are diving into boating history, as far back as 1858, to the birth of the inventor of one of most common modern tools used by man today—the diesel engine. Editor-in-Chief Dan Harding talks to New York Time’s best-selling author Doug Brunt about his book, The Mysterious Case of Rudolph Diesel and…

Sun Powered, Coast Guard Approved

Former physics teacher David Borton has always taken an interest in two things: science and the water. Growing up, he spent a lot of his time on the lakes of New York’s Adirondacks and began earning his freshwater sea legs around the same time he learned to walk. As life moved forward, he became obsessed with his second love, fundamental science. So, when the oil crisis hit in 1974, Borton’s research-driven mind sought solutions. He set his eyes on alternative energy, namely the thermonuclear reactor 93 million miles away from Planet Earth we call the Sun. Over time, the now 79-year old’s Troy, New York home became solar powered, and in 2005, he had a thought: The sun provides enough energy to sustain life on earth and power for his solar…

One Step at a Time

There are yacht designers and there are “yacht designers.” Some “yacht designers” are really interior decorators who whimsically wave wrists and arms while theatrically obsessing over whether the throw pillows match the Fenda-Sox. Some are exterior stylists influenced by supercars or sneakers depending on the day. All have computer rendering software. But real yacht designers are engineers with years of hands-on experience actually building vessels and learning lessons along the way, the easy ones and the hard ones. I’m a yacht designer with an engineering degree who spent many early years building what I had concocted on paper and screen. Those lessons are poured into every modern design my company produces for vessels around the world. But my most stinging lesson in the realities of designing for construction happened when I…

Middle of the Channel

Being in the middle gets a bad rap it doesn’t always deserve. No one wants the middle seat on the plane, and they don’t hand out medals for finishing in the middle-of-the-pack. Yet here I am, enjoying my current view from the middle ground. This perspective came to mind for me recently, when friends called to tell me they were considering selling their boat. I could hear the pain in their voices over the difficult decision they were weighing; life-long boaters, with thousands of nautical miles under the keel, now contemplating what life would be like without a boat. While still in excellent health, they are considering redirecting some of their time and resources into exploring the world by different means. In our conversation, they were trying to imagine what it…

Bluegame BGM75

Bluegame has never shied away from the experimental. Sanlorenzo’s ever-soslightly down-market brand has always shown off the builder’s attentiveness to eye-pleasing aesthetics and Italian elegance, but they’ve done it in a way that’s a bit different from most anyone else in the industry. Take for example, the yard’s rather avant garde spin on the split-level boat—seen in earlier models—with a salon both on the main deck and on the accommodations level. Or look to the hydrogenpowered chase boat the builder conjured up for the American Magic America’s Cup team. In that line of innovation something new this way comes: the BGM75, the first production catamaran the builder has ever put to sea. This yacht is rather narrow for a catamaran, at 74-feet, 4-inches long, she is 26-feet, 7-inches wide—compare that to…

Behind the Scenes at Formula Boats

This episode was recorded in an interesting location; it was recorded in a little-known town called Decatur, Indiana, the longtime home of Formula boats. After an incredible tour, and before that an impressive sea trial of the builder’s new 457 CC, we had the opportunity to sit down with Josh Porter, a member of the engineering team and third generation of the family that owns Formula and made it the brand it is today. Courser Racing

“The military was my whole life.” When Combat Divers and Special Operations Veterans Blake Sufferling and Peter Glaeser transitioned out of long and intense active-duty careers that regularly saw deployments to spots from Ramadi to Mosul and Kabul, they needed a new mission. So why in the world would they choose to row across two oceans? “It started out with a couple of guys wanting to do something epic and it turned into a mission to give back, and give back to other veterans,” said Glaeser. “And frankly what we have I think is unique compared to any other veterans transition organizations.” Check out their wild story, hear about their radical plan—and learn how to support their mission on the Power & Motoryacht podcast.   Subscribe to Power & Motoryacht magazine at pmymag.com/subscribe Subscribe to our FREE newsletter Learn more about your ad choices.
