A Lifestyle Celebration - 16 Years

vie-magazine-westport-yachts-hero-min

The Westport 164-foot (50m) Tri-Deck Motoryacht boasts six staterooms, including a top-deck VIP suite with its own sun deck, plus a large formal dining room, a commercial-grade galley, and much more.

Seas the Day

Making time for true luxury, photography courtesy of westport yachts.

When Andrew Troyer started selling boats in the “world’s luckiest fishing village” of Destin, Florida, he admits he didn’t at first understand that when some brands preached the high quality of their products, it was not always a guarantee. Through the years, his appreciation for the finer things in life has also come to mean an appreciation for working with brands that craft products of lasting value while maintaining the integrity of what is promised to their consumers—and that makes all the difference in the world. In an age where technology means everything is at our fingertips, Troyer knows firsthand the importance of realizing that the best products and services can take time.

VIE caught up with Troyer to discuss Westport Yachts’ commitment to promoting and creating products that are definitely worth the time that’s put into them.

Westport also offers yacht charters for those who would like to rent a luxury vessel and a crew for an unforgettable excursion at sea.

Westport also offers yacht charters for those who would like to rent a luxury vessel and a crew for an unforgettable excursion at sea.

VIE : How did you get started in the yacht brokerage business?

Andrew Troyer: I started at a small company in Destin and over a decade worked my way into the megayacht market. The boats I first started selling years ago were equivalent to the tenders aboard the yachts we build at Westport. Over the years, I realized that luxury didn’t always equal quality, and I began seeking out the very best in the industry. I’m proud to have landed at a company that doesn’t cut corners, offers world-class service, and builds with pride right here in the United States.

VIE : What makes a yacht a great investment over other types of watercraft?

AT: In truth, not all yachts are created equal, nor do they have the same residual value or ease of resale. That being said, a yacht is an investment of many kinds. For some, it’s an investment in family—a floating destination that draws friends and loved ones together. For others with wanderlust, it’s a machine used to create lifelong memories and experiences. To me, a yacht is time well spent.

Yachts are the destination. Most of our owners are very busy people, and the yacht is a place for them to get away.

VIE : Do many of your clients choose yachts as a second home of sorts?

AT: Yachts are the destination. Most of our owners are very busy people, and the yacht is a place for them to get away. I’m always pleased to hear that an owner is using the yacht eight hundred to a thousand hours a year. In some cases, they are spending as many as two hundred days per year aboard.

VIE : What sets Westport Yachts apart from other brands?

AT: Our shipyards are based in Washington State. We employ over 500 people, we build yachts from 112 to 164 feet (34 to 50 meters), we’ve been building since 1964, and we are the largest producer of superyachts in the USA. In addition to new construction, we have an extremely active brokerage working to sell and purchase used yachts from 60 feet and up. Our recently launched charter department works with clients to create one-week or longer extended vacations aboard a yacht anywhere on the globe.

Typically, we work with the one-half of the 1 percent—those ultra-high-net-worth individuals who seek honest, ethical representation and value doing the right thing even when no one is looking.

With its contemporary profile and refined interior spaces, Westport’s 130-foot (40m) Tri-deck Motoryacht has been designed to offer the very best of the good life at sea.

VIE : What types of new technology have you seen being added to luxury yachts?

AT: Gyro stabilization is hardly new but is a newer technology that has had a major impact on the enjoyment of yachts. Gyros work to help eliminate roll at anchor, creating a more comfortable experience for the owner and guests. We currently use Seakeepers in our 112 and VEEM Gyros in our larger yachts.

Personally, I’m most impressed by our newly launched Westport integrated bridge system. It’s produced in Mandeville, Louisiana, by sister company Marine Technologies. This all-glass integrated bridge system is truly cutting edge. Benefits include one-man bridge operation, application redundancy, touch screen operation, online ordering of charts and weather forecasts, remote access for diagnostics and monitoring, and a helm chair monitor that allows the captain to control the entire yacht without leaving the chair.

We are currently developing new products, with a couple of new launches that we expect to announce in 2019.

The impressive Westport series of yachts includes sizes ranging from thirty-four to fifty meters, with customizable amenities to meet any owner’s needs.

The impressive Westport series of yachts includes sizes ranging from thirty-four to fifty meters, with customizable amenities to meet any owner’s needs.

VIE : What are some of the most interesting or exciting features you’ve seen on a yacht?

AT: I’m a huge fan of the “beach club” concept. The beach club aft allows the owner/guests to hang out with easy access to water toys like Jet Skis, SEABOBs, and tenders. They can listen to music, watch TV, enjoy a fine rum or drink, and watch the day go by at sea level.

VIE : Tell us a little about your other business—producing high-quality rum.

AT: ARÔME was an opportunity for me to create a brand that simply didn’t compromise. From the rum itself down to the labels, we cut no corners. The ARÔME 28 has been aged for a minimum of twenty-eight years and was created in the old-world Cuban style of rum distillation.

VIE : Readers can learn more about ARÔME rum in VIE ’s upcoming culinary issue or at RumAROME.com.

To learn more or to inquire about purchasing your own destination on the sea, visit WestportYachts.com or contact Andrew Troyer at [email protected] or (954) 732-0339.

Yachtley Crew Announce New EP ‘Seas The Day’

Earlier this week, the seven-man outfit announced their debut ep, titled ‘seas the day’, releasing on july 14th on mailboat records. the yachtley crew, also known as the titans of soft rock, perform their own style of rock called yacht rock, and remix classic songs such as toto’s ‘africa’, and the bee gees’ ‘how deep is your love’ in this style, which has gained them a substantial fan base. now, the group are focusing on creating their own original music, starting with the band’s first original song, titled ‘sex on the beach’..

The Californian crew first burst onto the scene in 2017, touring local venues in the state with their novel style and putting a loveable twist on iconic songs across different genres. Behind the scenes, they’ve been working hard on not just remixing older music, but making new, original music in their Yacht Rock style, including, but not limited to, ‘Sex On The Beach’, a song with an accompanying music video featuring iHeart host Mario Lopez. The band are also going on an ‘Anchors Up’ tour to go along with the release of ‘Seas The Day’ to promote their music and gain well-deserved recognition.

The EP itself is a six-track release produced by Grammy-winning producer Chris Lord-Alge and includes ‘Sex On The Beach’ along with 5 other Yacht Rock remixes. The Yachtley Crew have delivered a great album here – even if it is relatively short, they have still done a phenomenal job of it, creating an album that fans and new listeners alike can enjoy – especially their original song, which has an unmatched level of creativity. This EP is just a snippet of what’s yet to come – the Yachtley Crew have a lot more music left in them.

Seas the day! And other boat-name wisdom

In the beginning, there was “Gallopin’ Dandruff,” an all-white racing boat sponsored by Wildroot Cream-Oil hair tonic.

Then came “Stevie’s Searay.” And “Shazam,” and “Gotta Go,” an off-shore speed boat.

But his newest boat really has Steve Swann excited.

“The boat I just ordered,” Swann says, leaning forward in his seat at the Fish Tales bar in St. Petersburg, Fla., “is a Baja. It’s a million-dollar boat and it’ll go at least 140 miles an hour out of the box. You know what I’m calling it?”

A long pause. Steve’s smile widens.

“Sea Ya!”

And with this, his hand smacks the wood bar, and he laughs from deep inside his belly, and you are quite sure there has never been a man on this earth more tickled by his own comedic timing.

The naming of a watercraft, once considered a naval necessity – a way to differentiate one ship from another – has developed over the course of time into a battle of wit, a laborious, ongoing struggle to produce the funniest, punniest moniker on the water.

Today’s names play off everything from partying (“Aquaholic”) to bodily functions (“Wet Dream”), from family names (“Mann-O-Mann”) to marital status (“She Got Everything But This”). There are elegant names (“Water Music”) and not-so-elegant (“Breakin’ Wind”); puns on sailing (“Breakin’ Wind”) and puns on philosophy (“Seas the Day”).

There are clever names, such as “Sea Section,” belonging to a married couple who, by profession, deliver babies. And there are occupational names like “Out of the Office” and “The Boardroom.” The idea being that when clients call the office, secretaries can say with honesty, “I’m sorry, but he’s in the Boardroom this afternoon.”

Yes, the naming of a boat has become a rite of passage for owners, a process that is not to be taken lightly.

Says Bill Waird, a salesman at Massey Yacht Sales & Service in St. Petersburg, “After I sell a boat, I tell the customers that the easy part is over. The hard part is picking the name.”

Just how paramount is selecting the right name? In the past decade, publishers have hawked many books on the subject. Web sites, such as BoatUS.com, annually post lists of names. Almost all boat owners have a story about naming their craft, said members of the Cape Coral Cruise Club who had tied up in Bayboro Harbor during a recent weekend.

Mac McEwen, a member of the club and owner of “Bullfrog,” says he spent more time settling on a name for his boat than he did choosing a name for his son. St. Petersburg resident Patsy Luethmann has spent six years trying to decide what to call her 19-foot Runabout.

“I couldn’t think of the perfect name,” Luethmann says, “so it didn’t get one.”

She’s still working on it.

The act of naming a vessel, according to maritime historian James Clary, author of “Superstitions of the Sea: A Digest of Beliefs, Custom and Mystery,” dates back to 2680 B.C., with the Egyptian ship “Praise of the Two Lands,” a name thought to signify the unity between the north and south Nile.

Names have two different effects in contemporary society, says Christine De Vinne, a professor at Ursuline College in Pepper Pike, Ohio. The first, and more predictable, function of naming is to identify someone or something among a group, said Vinne, who researches onomastics, the study of names. The second function of naming is to give the name-giver power over an object.

“Take, for example, literary characters,” De Vinne says. “When an author is able to claim a name for a character, he is then able to give clues to his audience as to what the character is or what he represents.”

Perhaps this is why boaters feel the need to justify the names they choose.

“When they step into their boat, they’re literally wearing that name,” says Gardner Jenkins, whose St. Petersburg business, Aqua Graphics Boat Names, has designed boat lettering for 13 years. “It’s like a tattoo on their forehead. They need to get it right.”

Old-school boaters advise first-timers to pay attention to tradition and superstition. One well-known belief is that changing names brings bad luck. So does naming a boat after a woman.

John Stimberis, a New Jersey native and member of the Cape Coral Cruise Club, learned this the hard way, when, as a clueless seafarer in his 20s, he not only changed the name of his boat, but also named it after his wife.

The boat sank. Three times.

After a boatyard employee told him his ship was cursed and he would be smart to get rid of it, Stimberis sold it, and immediately vowed to never again change a boat’s name.

“If the boat was named U.S. S—pile,” Stimberis says, “That’s what it would stay as.”

There are other beliefs . Clary, maritime historian, points out a stigma attached to names beginning with the letters “S” or “O” and boats with 13-letter names. When a captain names his boat, he is supposed to christen it as well, Clary said.

The Titanic was never christened.

“No bottle of champagne across the bow, nothing,” Clary says. “All they did was push it in the water. And so, according to the superstitious, that boat was doomed from the beginning.”

Of course, following the rules doesn’t necessarily make a boat immune to doom.

Just ask former presidential hopeful Gary Hart, whose 1988 campaign came to a crashing halt after the press caught him canoodling on his yacht with 29-year old model Donna Rice, not his wife.

The name of Hart’s yacht?

Monkey Business.
