Fresh outlook for regional yachting ahead of 2023 Teakle Classic Adelaide-Lincoln
Posted by Down Under Sail | Feb 17, 2023 | All News , Featured (home) , Keelboat , Lifestyle , Sailing , Uncategorized | 0 |
Some of Port Lincoln’s most renowned sailors are teaming up for the state’s premier offshore race in an effort to showcase how important major regattas are to regional clubs.
The Teakle Classic Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race is the town’s marquee on-water event and Kym Clarke’s 47-foot racing yacht, Fresh, will lead the Port Lincoln fleet with an all-star crew of locals and ex-pats.
Skipper Andy Dyer, a former America’s Cup sailor, said events like the Teakle Classic were crucial to helping regional sailing clubs stay afloat and continue to promote the sport to the next generation.
“This creates a centrepiece for up and coming sailors in Port Lincoln to see that we’re still relevant in offshore sailing,” he said.
“With the ex-pats too, it’s about getting back to the grassroots where they appreciate what that environment did for them growing up.”
This year’s event, which includes a four-day regatta in Port Lincoln next week, has attracted one of the biggest fleet’s in the club’s history, which Dyer hopes will be a catalyst for growth in local sailing.
Teaming up with Dyer and his team this year is Luke Stephens, a Port Lincoln ex-pat and one of the state’s top sailors, who now lives and races in Adelaide.
“There’s a lot of pride doing this race representing your home club, both Kym and Andy have done so much for the sport, as well as for me personally,” he said.
“I know what it was like as a youngster in Port Lincoln looking up to the top sailors at the club, I think that’s what we are trying to achieve again with this race.”
The Adelaide-Lincoln race starts from North Haven at 3pm today.

Geoff Boettcher’s 52-foot Secret Mens Business has broken a five-year drought to regain the overall IRC win in the Teakle Classic Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race.
He and his crew emerged victorious in a competitive five-boat Division 1 fleet, made up of four other 52s including Zen, Another Hooligan, Smuggler and Quest.
Gordon Ketelbey’s Zen finished in second overall, while Nick George’s Another Hooligan rounded out the podium in third.
The race will also count as the first Division 1 race of the Australian Yachting Championship, which is hosted this year as part of the Lincoln Week Regatta.
Bob Dunn’s Grainger 42 Trimaran, Venom, was awarded the line honours trophy for the first boat over the line, while also claiming the OMR win ahead of Charles Meredith’s Peccadillo.
On AMS, it was Derek Morrison’s Sintara that took out Division 1 after an excellent race, ahead of Seb Bohm’s Smuggler in second and Julian Newton’s Game On in third.
Division 2 AMS saw Brett Averay’s Bacardi claim the win, ahead of Barb Parker and Jim Gordon’s Papillon in second and Matt Fahey’s Faster Forward in third.
The Overall combined AMS results saw Sintara take the win ahead of Bacardi in second and Smuggler in third.
On PHS it was Sintara which took the win in Division 1, ahead of Scott Mutton’s 3 Cool Cats in second and Alan Woodward’s Reverie in third.
Division 2 PHS saw Faster Forward take the win ahead of Bacardi in second and Stuart Johnson’s Audacious in third.
Overall PHS was won by Sintara with Faster Forward in second and 3 Cool Cats in third.
The ORC division was also on offer in this year’s race and was won by Zen with Smuggler in second and Reverie in third.

Secret Mens Business took out Division 1
Champions crowned in Port Lincoln as Teakle Classic comes to an end
The 2023 Australian Yachting Championships, as part of the Teakle Classic Lincoln Week Regatta in Port Lincoln, has come to an end with champions across the range of divisions crowned.
The first three keelboat divisions all held racing on IRC as part of the championships, with a few additional regatta competitors involved on either AMS or ORC ratings.
The multihull division was also part of the Australian Championship with a strong fleet coming together to race on OMR handicap.
There was also a regatta Sportsboat fleet competing on both SMS rating and PHS handicap.
Geoff Boettcher’s Secret Men’s Business has officially got the monkey off the back, taking out the triple crown of the Adelaide-Lincoln race, the Lincoln Week Regatta, and the Australian Championship that combines results from the two events.
He held off a fast finishing Zen, skippered by Gordon Ketelbey, and becomes the first South Australian yacht in history to claim the Australian Yachting Championship crown.
“We went in there pretty nervous today because in two races we had to get one win and at least a second,” Boettcher said.
“Even at the top mark, we were second in both races so we had to fight for every inch mate.”
Finishing in third place after a great final day was Nick George’s Another Hooligan, which finished one and two points respectively ahead of fourth-placed Quest and fifth-placed Smuggler.
A strong fleet of Division 2 teams came together for an incredible battle on Boston Bay this week, with a range of yachts of all different designs giving everyone a chance at the front.
At the end of the regatta it was Andrew Smith’s Melges 32, Cockwomble, which came away with a great win after a strong final day ahead of Alan Woodward’s Reverie in second and Julian Newton’s MC38 Game On 2 in third.
Local Sydney 47 Fresh, skippered by Andy Dyer and owned by Kym Clarke, finished the regatta in fourth place after leading into the final day, which showed just how close the racing was.
Cockwomble’s Andrew Smith said it was a great experience bringing the boat over from Tasmania and being part of the event.
“It was incredible, six months ago we made the decision to come and do the IRC nationals in Port Lincoln … we’ve had a fantastic time and it’s been a great event in an unbelievable place,” he said.
It was the battle of the Sandringham boats for the overall Division 3 championship, with Alex Newman’s Arch De Triomphe and Brett Averay’s Bacardi going toe-to-toe in an exciting tussle all week.
The Archambault 31 came away with the win in the end, with the chance to knock off their home club rivals not lost on the team.
“We had a great battle with Bacardi, it was ironic when we looked at the draw for the divisions that we’re battling with a local (Melbourne) boat that we know really well and BA (Brett Averay) that we know very well,” Newman said.
“We had some really tight races with them today, they pushed us all the way to the limit, which we knew they would and we were lucky enough to beat them today.”
The two local Sydney 32s had a great battle to round out the podium in an evenly matched competition for ultimate local bragging rights.
In the end it was Brad Dennis and Matt Stephens skippering Lincoln Mentor that finished ahead of Simon Turvey’s Born to Mentor on a countback.
Both yachts had three thirds and three fourths on IRC with Lincoln Mentor besting its rival in the last race to take the podium result.
SPORTSBOAT DIVISION
The Sportsboat fleet saw a massive group of boats from a range of different designs come together with a Melges 24s ending up the best of the bunch on the SMS rating system.
Ken Abbott’s Outlier took the overall SMS win, closely followed by Todd Bartlett’s Bohica in second and Lee Haakmeester’s Outrage-us in third.
“Some of these boats are very, very fast and have very hot crews,” Abbott said.
“A 30-year-old boat like a Melges is still holding its own as I guess shown now, but just a fantastic regatta with a very strong sportsboat fleet.”
On PHS however, which saw a much larger fleet on the results sheet, Outrage-us ended up taking the win while Bohica finished second and local boat Mighty Fine Lyons, skippered by Bill Van Riet, finished third.
MULTIHULL DIVISION
The multihulls had the closest racing of the regatta this week with three teams all close to taking out the championship going into the last race.
In the end it was Gerald Valk’s Crosshair that took the regatta win, closely followed by its sister ship Carbon Credit, skippered by Peter Hawker, in second.
Craig Unthank’s Sknot was in the mix for most of the event but slipped to third overall on the final day.
Valk said the racing was incredibly close and to be able to win a multihull Australian Championship in Port Lincoln was a great way to cap off the event.
“We love sailing in Port Lincoln, it’s nice flat water, multis love flat water and with the Australian Yachting Championship on top of that, well that just pulled a lot of boats in for the event,” he said.
As the event comes to an end, the Teakle Classic has set its dates for next year with the Adelaide-Lincoln race starting on 16 February 2024 and the Lincoln Week Regatta running from 19-22 February 2024.
Next year’s Australian Yachting Championships will head to the Newcastle Cruising Yacht Club as part of the iconic SailFest event in April 2024.

Sailor dies after falling from yacht during Port Lincoln regatta
A sailor has died during a yacht race at Port Lincoln on South Australia's Eyre Peninsula.
Key points:
- A man suffered a fatal fall from a yacht
- The incident was during a Lincoln Week Regatta race
- Race management have offered condolences
Emergency crews were called to the South Quay Boulevard boat ramp after a man fell from a sailing boat and was pulled unconscious from the water at about 11am.
The man could not be revived.
In a statement, Lincoln Week Regatta chairman Steven Kemp said a competition sailor had died during the event.
"In the incident, the sailor was injured and fell from the yacht into the water, triggering a rapid response from the crew and race management to recover [him] as quickly as possible," he said.
"The sailor was attended to by crew from the yacht, who entered the water to support the sailor.
"A may-day radio call from the yacht was received by race management and a nearby sailing club powerboat was dispatched to recover the sailors in the water."
Mr Kemp said once the sailor was on the rescue boat, CPR was administered while the vessel travelled back to the marina.
"A defibrillator was also used while travelling back to the marina," he said.
He said paramedics met the boat at the marina, but the man could not be saved.
"The Port Lincoln Yacht Club is deeply saddened by this news and is offering every possible support to our sailors, the crew and yacht involved," Mr Kemp said.
"We offer our deepest condolences to the family of the sailor at this difficult time."
The race was part of Lincoln Week Regatta, which is being run alongside the Australian Yachting Championships.
Police are preparing a report for the coroner.

Over the weekend two RBYC boats, Another Chapter and JAMHU, joined 21 other yachts in the 74th Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht race. This 160nm race started in Adelaide on Friday afternoon with the course taking yachts across the Gulf of St Vincent to Marion Reef at the bottom of the Yorke Peninsula, into Investigator Strait towards Cape Spencer before the fleet turned northwest towards Cape Donington and into Port Lincoln. The section of the course from around Cape Spencer to Dangerous Reef, about 15 miles SE of Port Lincoln, is a navigator’s nightmare with numerous islands and reefs along the rhumb line. Many of these are unlit and to make things more interesting this section is sailed at night, often under spinnaker with a strong following wind. This year proved no different. The race started in 10-15knot south westerly breeze that strengthened and backed to the SE allowing the yachts to cross the Gulf of St Vincent on one port tack with the leading yachts reaching Marion Reef just on dark. The fleet then reached under headsails across Investigator Strait to Cape Spencer before setting spinnakers for the run home to Port Lincoln. The wind was 15-20 knots and shifted between 80 – 135 degrees with the shift to 80 degrees both unpredicted and unexpected. As often is the case at night, it was during this section that the race was won and lost. Most of the fleet had finished by lunchtime on Saturday with the two RBYC boats finishing 8th and 9th on AMS. After the usual post race refreshments and a good sleep, the crews of Another Chapter and JAMHU are preparing for the Tackle Classic Lincoln Regatta, a mix of windward/leeward and passage races sailed on the sheltered waters of Boston Bay – think Geelong without the channel, ships and ferries! Lincoln Yacht Race
Some of Australia’s most competitive racing yachts are gearing up for the highly anticipated Teakle Classic Adelaide to Port Lincoln Yacht Race, South Australia’s premier offshore event, which kicks off in Adelaide at 3pm this Friday 17 February.
This year’s event promises to be one of the most competitive in recent memory, with the 156 nautical mile voyage also acting as the first division one race of the 2023 Australian Yachting Championships.
This division will be made up of the five 52-footers including local boats Secret Men’s Business and Another Hooligan, as well as Quest, Smuggler and Zen all coming over from New South Wales.
The remaining divisions have the option to compete in the offshore race, however will have the entirety of their Australian Yachting Championships racing as part of the four-day Teakle Classic Lincoln Week Regatta in Port Lincoln next week.
Early forecasts suggest the race will be sailed in traditional sea breeze conditions with breeze building throughout the evening.
Secret Men’s Business navigator and regatta chairman Steve Kemp said there was a chance of a Saturday morning breeze shut down in the last stage of the race, but was hopeful there’d be enough wind to carry the fleet home.
“There’s a weak change going through just at the start of the race, so we look like starting in 12-14 knots of breeze which may build slightly in the early evening,” he said.
“It’s then shifting into the south and holding into the Saturday morning, which will hopefully get the whole fleet home.
“Two of the models are showing breeze all the way, but one is still showing a shut down on Saturday morning, so we’re hoping the two outweigh the one, but the models that are going out over the race now by Roger Badham, the guru meteorologist, has got us having wind throughout Saturday.”
Another Hooligan boat captain Curtis Mitchell said it was going to be a tough fleet with the three Sydney-based 52s coming into the race with plenty of preparation.
“The Sydney-based boats certainly are race-hardened, there’s no denying the preparation for this race that you gain out of doing the Hobart, so these teams are going to be able to drive hard through the night and stay on the gas, which will be a big challenge for us,” he said.
“We’re hoping that being one of the lighter TP52s that we’ll be able to keep our pace up in the softer breezes and make the most of the shifts through the night to keep up with the others.”
The race over the gulfs sets up a fantastic week of racing in Port Lincoln, known colloquially to the local sailing community as the ‘centre of the universe’.
The four-day regatta consists of two ’round-the-cans’ races on both Monday and Thursday that bookend the event, a long race on the Tuesday showcasing the rugged Eyre Peninsula coastline, as well as a bay race on Wednesday morning that finishes in the heart of the Lincoln National Park, where sailors get to let their hair down and experience the iconic Megga’s Beach BBQ.

An Early Look - Port Lincoln
It's Port Lincoln Cup day tomorrow where we have fine and moderate weather and the rail in the True position. The track has been giving all runners their chance recently and we will be on a Good-rated track.
Hometown girl Rochelle Milnes has been the star performer at Port Lincoln over the past year with 20 winners. Next best is Kayla Crowther with 12. In recent times, Jake Toeroek has been in strong form with 10 winners from his past 50 rides, followed by Sam Payne with 9.
Race 8 – 1. MYOCEAN WARRIOR
Myocean Warrior goes well around this track, and after the claim for Caitlin Tootell he looks well-placed in this race. His recent Strathalbyn jumpout was sound and he maps to sit just behind the leaders. Should be hard to beat.
Race 3 – 1. LION'S INSTINCT
Lion's Instinct stepped up to the 1200 metres last time and recorded a strong win. He's been kept fresh for this race and there looks to be a solid tempo in this smallish field. Expect him to be ridden patiently and come with a strong run late.
