These Nine Explorer Yachts Are Redefining the Mini-Expedition Yacht Category.

With last year seeing a record number of explorer-style yachts under construction, it’s clear a new generation of superyacht buyer is no longer content to jostle for moorings in crowded harbors of the Med or Caribbean. They want open space and adventure.

Expedition yachts have traditionally been converted freighters or supply vessels, like the 223-foot Ragnar or 250-foot Yersin. But this new generation of compact superyachts, many below 150 feet, is designed for  similar missions in smaller packages, thanks to utilitarian hull designs and expanded fuel capacities.

One in this group is designed to be self-sufficient for 30 days as it explores remote regions. Another has a top speed of 25 knots, giving it the ability to outrun storms. Several have enough rear deck space to land a helicopter.

Name-brand builders such as Holland’s Damen and Italy’s Sanlorenzo and Cantiere delle Marche have been joined by a number of specialist Turkish yards, like Bering and AvA, in offering capable, adventure-ready vessels with luxury interiors.

Here are nine of the finest. Most are new, but we’ve included several recent launches, and even a decade-old classic, to show just how far this field has come.

Damen SeaXplorer 58 ‘Pink Shadow’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Nothing screams “explorer yacht” louder than the 190-foot SeaXplorer 58 Pink Shadow from Damen Yachting. This oceangoing beast was just launched from the Dutch brand’s yard in Antalya, Turkey. The heavily customized Pink Shadow (it’s painted green) has a towering, ice-crushing, vertical bow and a distinctive open forward gallery. The boat is designed to explore the most remote corners of the globe. The vessel can be completely self-sufficient for up to a month, with the ability to cruise at 11.5 knots for over 5,000 nautical miles. Need to fly in more supplies? There’s a basketball-court-sized helipad at the stern. The yacht’s huge in-hull garages can also be filled with a fleet of toys, including two multipurpose tenders, motorcycles, ATVs, and a 4×4 SUV, plus a custom 37-foot racing sailboat.

Lynx Crossover 27 ‘Avontuur’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Paint numbers on the bow and you might mistake this new 88-foot explorer from Lynx Yachts for a military vessel. There’s even space on the open aft deck for a Navy SEAL–style RIB. But the Crossover 27 is all about adventure (“Avontuur” is the Dutch word for exactly that.) Designed by Holland’s Bernd Weel with a hull shape by Diana Yacht Design, the Lynx comes with a pair of 850-horse Caterpillars that can power it to a top speed of 14 knots. At 10 knots, it has a range of over 3,000 nautical miles. This first example was commissioned for an adventure-loving Californian who had the 750-square-foot aft deck designed to carry both an Air Nautique G23 wakeboard boat and 16-foot RIB. The garage on the deck below can transport Jet Skis, paddleboards, and scuba gear.

explorer yacht northern marine 78

One of the baseline requirements for legitimate explorer yachts is that they be safe and stable in rough seas. Which is why the 85-foot explorer is so impressive. With no fewer than three stabilizer systems, the Arksen can stay upright even if slammed side-on by some Perfect Storm– sized rogue wave. The all-aluminum hull is even designed to recover from a 180-degree knockdown. The Arksen’s semi-displacement hull and glass-filled superstructure come from U.K.-based Humphries Yacht Design. Twin, heavy-duty 330 hp Cummins diesels give the boat a top speed of 14 knots. At nine knots, it has an astonishing range of 7,000 nautical miles.

Sanlorenzo 500EXP ‘Para Bellum’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

The 154-foot 500EXP , the newest and biggest addition to the yard’s luxury explorer yacht range, has space for a helicopter on its stern. It also features an ice-crushing full-displacement steel hull and towering bow that gives it serious expedition cred. But the 500EXP is designed to cruise to the most remote corners of the planet in comfort. The vessel has a range of more than 4,500 nautical miles at 11 knots with the twin 970-horse Cat C32s powerplants. Below decks, the generous 31-foot beam delivers copious amounts of space for 10 guests in five cabins. The latest version of the yacht, the gray-hulled Para Bellum , can now be chartered from $300,000 a week. Helicopter not included.

Alpha Yachts Alfresco 125 ‘Piccolo’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Turkey’s Alpha Custom Yachts go-anywhere 125-foot Piccolo focuses on big spaces to enjoy the great outdoors. The flybridge itself sprawls across 1,180 square feet, with features such as a plunge pool up front and uncluttered entertaining spaces at the rear. The sleek, clean lines are from Britain’s H2 Yacht Design, with the semi-displacement fiberglass hull from naval architects Laurent Giles. And unlike most explorer yachts, the boat is fast. Twin Caterpillar C32s can punch her to a top speed of 17.5 knots, though throttle back to 10 and it will cover over 2,300 nautical miles. The first in the Alfresco 125 series, Piccolo, was launched in 2020. It is now on the market for $12.5 million.

Bering B145 ‘Heeus’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

The flagship of Turkey’s Bering Yachts is the 145-foot Heeus . It has a range of over 4,600 miles, which means it can run from San Francisco to Hawaii, and back, on a single tank of fuel at 12 knots. In addition to its twin main Caterpillar engines, the B145 can also be powered by electric motors and batteries. The hybrid system is designed to ease the yacht silently into more eco-sensitive anchorages and run overnight without generators. The outside decks are huge—the sundeck alone spans almost 1,000 square feet. The boat is available for weekly charter this summer for around €230,000 ($250,000).

AvA Yachts Kando 110 Explorer ‘Infinity-Nine’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

AvA’s Kando110 Explorer series hit the headlines last November after it emerged that the Turkish yard’s newest launch had been purchased by former San Antonio Spurs’ basketball star Tony Parker. He called the boat Infinity Nine . The 110-foot, steel-and-aluminum world-girder was designed to crisscross the Atlantic, courtesy of its 6,500 mile range and fuel-sipping 650 hp Volvo D16 diesels. Distinguished by a four-deck layout, towering topsides, and expansive hull-side glass, the Kando110 has six staterooms, including a 290-square-foot full-beam master.

CdM Flexplorer 130 ‘Aurelia’

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Superyacht cranes have never been this cool. The towering A-frame heavy-lifter on the rear deck of CdM 130 Flexplorer Aurelia can lift and launch the yacht’s hefty 28-foot tender over the stern without breaking a sweat—in fact, it can hoist up to 3.5 tonnes. But even more impressive is that, when stowed, the crane disappears completely into recesses in the yacht’s teak deck. Sergio Cutolo’s Hydro Tec studio did the yacht design. The Flexplorer series lives up to its name: Yachts can be built from 127 to 154 feet. Power-wise, Aurelia , the first of the series, has twin Caterpillar C32s to give a 14-knot top speed. At 10 knots, it has a 5,000-nautical-mile range.

Canados Oceanic 143 Fast Expedition

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Traditional explorer yachts tend to chug across oceans at single-digit speeds. But there are times when you need to outrun a storm or punch against a fast-flowing tide. That’s the beauty of Italian builder Canados’s new Oceanic 143 tri-deck: speed. Powered by three 2,400hp Caterpillar C32 12-cylinder turbo diesels, the boat can reach a top speed of 25 knots. With a fuel capacity of 8,320 gallons, if you ease back to an eight-knot cruise speed, range extends to over 6,000 miles. Much of this comes down to the yacht’s innovative “Dis-planing” hull (see image above). Canados gave it the unusual name because the design is a rare combination of “displacement” and “planing”—topped off by a wave-slicing, straked-bow design.

The latest generation of expedition yachts design, offering both the aft and forward pilothouse exterior layouts. The aft pilothouse provides a skylounge just aft of the pilothouse that offers 360 degrees of incredible view while underway or at anchor. The large flybridge above is a great entertainment area, in or out of the sun. The master in this configuration can be on the main level using the full 20' 3" beam. The forward pilothouse configuration provides a large boat deck and has a lower profile than the aft pilothouse configuration. In either configuration the layout can be a dual walk around of wide body to port.

As in any of the Northern expedition models the yachts are very safe, comfortable and quite. Each yacht is a custom build and designed around the owners' needs and requirements.

XPM-78 Designing the First Explorer Yacht Hull

Updated: Apr 6, 2023

The following article resulted from a long conversation with Dennis Harjamaa of Artnautica Design . Dennis is the creator of the LRC and XPM range of explorer yachts. Rugged and capable vessels sized from 58, 65, 78, and 85 feet LOA with displacements to 70,000 kg dry. This story is about the birth of Mobius, the first hull in the XPM-78 series. Over to Dennis:

" I thought I might share thoughts on how the Mobius hull design came to be. You may be aware that when the owners first got in touch, they talked about a much shorter boat, a 65" foot or 20m hull. At this time, she was going to be a twin-engine boat with a developable shape like the LRC58, but with one extra chine, so the max available width of the alloy plate was sufficiently broad to span the beam of all panels. The design goal was to match or exceed the capabilities of the FPB65. The look they were after was "lean and mean" to scare away pirates. Early on, I lost the battle regarding fitting a flybridge, haha!

"Developable plates" means a hull form created by curves in a single dimension. Plates can be cut from flat stock and formed around the frames at the yard without recourse to more sophisticated machinery such as presses or rolling wheels.

A book worth of emails was written by all parties as design ideas spiraled round and round (ref Mobiusworld ). The choice to go with a single-engine setup was made once the thought of fitting a Gardner with its legendary reliability came along, if memory serves. At about the same time, we moved away from a chine hull to a round bilge and started adding waterline length. Allow any designer the freedom, and the waterline will grow. After a few rounds of power and speed calculations, the decision was made to "go the whole hog" and make the hull 24m long. So it is not too much of a stretch to state that Mobius is really a "20m boat" with a "24m hull".

Mobius has a single-cylinder engine setup with a Gardner Diesel engine and CPP Propeller.

Imagine our amusement when the FPB70 was introduced. The similarities with what we had were obvious. The design for Mobius was well and truly fixed by that time; the goal shaped the design.

An initial proposal of a 75-foot hull with two engines.

Yacht Hull Types:

My clients decided on the interior layout early in the process. The extra length was given to the forepeak but mainly to the engine room and workshop. Great discipline, I must say, or perhaps for Wayne, it was all positive gains, with room for more toys in the workshop.

Single Yacht Hull vs Yacht with Twin Hulls

Comparison of XPM-78 design with a single engine (left) and twin-engine setup. Notice the increased beam in the twin-engine setup, mainly to provide additional buoyancy for the extra weight involved.

Yacht Hull Design - 3D Hull Structural Grid Model

I did an initial 3D model of the structural grid for a first stab at the structural weight for the weight estimate. Now came the fun part, the final shaping of the hull, once the variables were tightened enough to be pretty confident of the design displacement, fuel, water tank volumes, positions, etc. This was when I checked the proposed interior layout fit within the structural envelope. Since we were looking at a relatively low-powered single engine, I tried minimizing drag from wave-making and wetted surfaces. I worked hard to maintain the shaft

angle as close to the horizontal as possible, sculpting the protective skeg with a low-drag foil profile and blending the tunnel into the lines as smoothly as possible. No hard edges for the water to go around here.

An interesting thing to point out is that the propeller tunnel depth has to be drawn so that only one propeller blade tip is close to the tunnel/hull bottom intersection at a time. Otherwise, some impossible-to-fix harmonic noise can happen. Another exciting feature of prop tunnels is that the average tip clearance between hull and propeller can be reduced from the customarily accepted 15-20% to as little as 10-12% of the propeller diameter without noise becoming a problem. I learned this when LRC58 Hull #2 BROADSWORD chose to go with a 90hp engine rather than the 75hp of my KOTI. KOTI has a 650mm dia propeller which the guys at WEST-MEKAN wanted to increase to 700mm to absorb the extra power. If anything, Broadsword's propeller is quieter than mine. Arguably the smaller the gap, the better the propeller's efficiency. Good stuff!

I also wanted to keep the boat's profile as low as possible to minimize the added wind resistance. I gave the hull a narrow entry and balanced lines for easy steering, good tracking in a seaway, and gentle pitching. Checking the position of the vertical center of gravity against the rolling characteristics was done after each change to try to achieve a gentle rolling motion. With powerboats, there is a delicate balance between the initial stiffness and speed of the roll. Stiff is safe but potentially snappy and uncomfortable. So you choose to roll fast but not far or slow and deep. The decision was made to err on caution and go stiffer rather than softer. A rigid boat can be made smoother by lifting the center of gravity; lowering the CG is much more difficult. A softer hull shape is easier on the stabilizer system to work against, so a smaller set of fins/rotors can be used.

Here the need for extra large freshwater tanks becomes obvious. There is little water onboard at the start of the passage. As fuel is used, water is made to compensate for the loss in displacement and the rolling characteristics. Tanks forward and aft allow for some trim control, weight aft in following seas, and forward when punching into it.

At this stage, I hired the services of Peter Lawson , a structural engineer here in Auckland. I used to work for Roger Hill, mostly known for his excellent catamarans. Roger would often hire Peter to crunch the numbers on structures, so I knew he was top-notch and had a practical touch with loads of boatbuilding knowledge. We devised the structural layout with Wayne's input, which I turned into a super accurate 3D model and ultimately flattened 2D cutting files. "

Marlow Explorer 78: Driven To Perfection

  • By George Sass, Jr.
  • Updated: October 4, 2007

explorer yacht northern marine 78

Marlow Explorer 78

When I think of my retirement, decades from now, I imagine a little cruising, perhaps mixed in with some occasional writing, travel and a slower pace. Something I don’t envision is starting a boatbuilding business from scratch halfway around the world and teaching several hundred workers how to build boats to a demanding standard, all while maintaining a thriving sales and service center in Florida. That’s because I’m no David Marlow.

This is the second time the self-made boat nut has tried to retire, only to return with a new venture. He seems to have more get-up-and- go than all The Rolling Stones combined (well, maybe not Keith Richards). After Marlow retired from a successful yacht sales and service business, he rustled out of the Maine woods to relaunch Marlow Marine and quickly became the top-selling Grand Banks Yachts dealer. This is when I first met him and was instantly impressed by the level of service and energy at his yard in Snead Island, Florida. More importantly, I sensed his passion for whatever project he was working on at the moment; it simply danced all around him. You would have to be dead not to be moved.

Today, David Marlow has one project, albeit a huge one, with over 40 years of passion and knowledge behind it-the Marlow Explorer series. In his Snead Island office there are piles upon piles of papers, drawings, catalogs and notes that evolved into the Marlow project and continue to keep it fueled. And Marlowe has definitely turned up the heat.

It was in this office several years ago that I first learned of the new Marlow Explorer 78. Like a proud parent, Marlow gave me a sneak peak, slowly turning over each page of the drawings, recounting a story about each detail on the page. “This particular owner wants a spiral staircase right in the middle of the pilothouse to the accommodations. Man, we rung our brains on that one,” Marlow said. “But I think it will work.”

Eighteen months later, having had the chance to see the finished product, I think I can attest that this piece of complicated carpentry “worked.” Moreover, I’ll go on record as saying that the entire 78 is one of the best examples of semi-custom boatbuilding that I’ve seen.

Marlow builds each Explorer-the series includes seven models from 53 to 78 feet-at his facility in China. When I mentioned to Marlow that some yards I’ve spoken to want keep their China or Far East building programs under the covers, he looked surprised. “Oh no, I want people to know that we build in China. Like anywhere, you get what you pay for,” Marlow said. “You can pay for a piece of garbage or you can pay for quality. We pay for quality.”

Marlow decided early on in the project’s infancy to open his own yard versus building with subcontractors. The most compelling reason for this, he explained, is that it allows him to define Marlow Explorer’s corporate culture.

“When I used to pull up at the factory, the workers would run from me. Now they come up with new ideas and are real proud of the work they are doing,” Marlow said. “Like me, they really want to make each boat better than the next.” You may not get this level of participation if the yard is building boats for several companies.

They’ll have their work cut out for them, as they try to improve the next 78. Except for the hull design, no Explorer is alike. The underbody is similar to all the Explorers and incorporates twin strut keels. One of the most significant benefits of this design is the protection of the running gear and underwater bearings. There are no exposed shafts or struts to find underwater debris or to be damaged during a grounding. At least once a month I talk to somebody who is up on the hard after hitting a submerged object along the ICW-“object” including everything from telephone poles to garbage cans. The net result is usually the same; bent shafts, props and struts, followed by a long wait while parts are ordered and delivered.

In addition to the added protection, the twin keels enhance performance. Basically, a hollow is molded into the bottom about amidships, and a wave forms in this area. This wave will cancel out a large stern wave, increasing performance. I’ve run several Marlows and can attest that each hull is easily driven and surefooted. Although I’ve not been in any large beam swell on an Explorer, by design these twin keels should help dampen roll as well.

During our sea trial, we hit a top speed of 25.4 knots on a fully loaded yacht, less food stores, with a pair of 3412 Caterpillars. On this particular 78, the owner chose to have the Cats “D” rated, reducing the horsepower from 1,350 to 1,250. This reduces the top speed, but provides a more economical cruising speed. According to Marlow, another 78 with “C” rated 3412s, has a top speed of approximately 30 knots. This impressive performance can be attributed to both the hull design and lightweight construction techniques employed in each Explorer.

Each hull is built with Kevlar and vinylester resins and then vacuum-bagged. I crawled along a navy blue 78 at the Ft. Lauderdale Boat Show and could not find a blemish in the glass. In addition, the use of composites and coring in cabin soles and bulkheads has a beneficial effect on the interior accommodations by allowing Marlow to draw a relatively low and lean profile while not skimping on interior volume. These high-tech building techniques reveal one of the primary benefits of building in China-a reduced labor rate that allows the builder to spend more money on items like technology.

Marlow also puts these savings back into equipment and hardware. I don’t think it’s an overstatement to say that almost every component from water pumps to the door hardware has been evaluated before it is added to the bill of materials. It’s all top shelf and all very expensive. In order to keep the cost of each Marlow under control-and these boats represent one heck of a value-Marlow concentrates on production efficiencies. “We have one team whose only job is to walk around the factory and figure out how we can be smarter about how we build each boat and save money,” Marlow said.

One area I can’t imagine Marlow is saving any money on is the fit and finish of the accommodations. The saloon uses planks taken from the same log of teak and as a result has a uniformly golden finish. Even the inside of the drawers is executed with an exceptional level of detail. “The finish carpenters have to pass a series of tests before they can start working on the details,” Marlow said. “The final test is make a desk for the local school in a certain amount of time. Some were very elaborate with inlays and burls. One of my favorites was a very simple desk, but once you opened it, it was amazing.”

Each Marlow can be ordered with a variety of layouts. Our test 78, for example, was very different from another 78 I saw in Marlow’s yard. Each features a fully equipped pilothouse, which has a very good 360-degree line of sight. Marlow was able to maneuver the 78 from this lower station in his yard’s basin packed with other boats, giving us mere inches to work with. If you had asked me, I would have said it could not be done. The line of sight from the bridge over the bow is also good; an aft docking station will facilitate backing into a slip.

The engineroom follows the same level of detail. I’m a fan of finishing an engineroom with Awlgrip. This makes it easier to keep clean, in addition to just looking cool. Adding to the cool factor are things like stainless steel engine mounts. You don’t need to get them, but boy do they look sharp.

I was also able to see the detail and engineering that went into the fuel tank. The fuel system is designed to solve a common flaw on many yachts-the inability to use the full fuel capacity. The tank follows the contour of the hullsides, terminating at a sump at the bottom of the tank. All the fuel flows and is forced to this sump and pick-up point, allowing you to use all the fuel except that in the sump. Furthermore, two inspection plates allow a periodic cleaning of the tank, something I recommend.

If you’re in the market for a traditionally designed motoryacht built to an exacting standard, you would be wise to step aboard a Marlow. And if you really aren’t in the market, you would be wise to stay away from David Marlow. I assure you his passion for his product is contagious and downright inspiring.
