Figawi, The Story Behind the Annual Boat Race Between Hyannis and Nantucket

In 1972, a friendly conversation among friends at Baxter’s Boathouse in Hyannis, MA escalated to a challenge to see who could sail their boat to Nantucket the fastest over Memorial Day weekend. This was the inception of Figawi Race Weekend, a Nantucket and Cape Cod tradition that has grown considerably in popularity since it’s informal start in 1972 thanks to names like Kennedy and Koch joining the competition in the 80s and beyond.

Originally billed as a fun race across Nantucket Sound over Memorial Day weekend, Figawi grew by leaps and bounds during the 70s—so much so that a lay day was added in 1978 along with a race back to Hyannis, as the race committee, now formerly organized, turned the Figawi from a one day race into a three day weekend event. Since it’s inception, the race and 3-day festivities have drawn thousands of sailors, sailing enthusiasts and those who just want to be part of this fun tradition to Nantucket for Memorial Day weekend.

The annual race, which raises money for various charities, is sponsored by a number of companies including Vineyard Vines (their boat is the Nancy A), Budweiser, Sam Adams, Mount Gay, Viking River Cruises and Coca Cola. And though the race is competitive, the emphasis on this event has always been about friendly camaraderie and the festivities following the race.

Why is it called Figawi? Legend has it that during the first race back in 1972, there was a thick fog that blanketed Nantucket Sound. This caused confusion for some of the sailors who were looking for the island of Nantucket (no GPS back then) and in turn began asking each other “where the f**k are we?” Although imagine that sentence in a deep Boston accent and “Where the Figawi?”…or simply “Figawi” was born.

The 44th Annual Figawi Race Weekend is recognized as a top sailing event not only on the east coast but is known nationally as well as internationally. Figawi Race Weekend kicks off the Cape Cod and Nantucket summer season with this year’s race boasting 226 boats and over 3,000 sailors and visitors, as well as many locals who attend the event as spectators. Entries include sailors from Virginia, Washington, DC; Alabama, Indiana, California, Hawaii, South Carolina, New York, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut, Rhode Island and a number of harbors throughout Massachusetts.

The 200-plus boats are organized into classes based on a complex formula known as PHRF (performance handicap racing fleet) that takes many variables, from sail size to propeller drag, into account. This assures, in theory at least, that all the boats compete on a level playing field. The starts are also staggered, with faster boats starting last, all racing for the island of Nantucket, some 30 miles away. The distance, however is not a straight line—different classes of boats are sent off on different vectors, depending on the many variables of mother nature, like wind speed/direction, sea state and wave heights. Depending on the various conditions, the theory of the “Pursuit Race” format is that all competitors should reach the Nantucket MO(A) at around the same time, at the entrance of Nantucket Harbor.

Figawi, The Story Behind the Annual Boat Race Between Hyannis and Nantucket

Once on Nantucket skippers and their supporters will head to the Figawi Tent Party near the Boat Basin to enjoy Goombay smash’s, Dark N’ Stormies and live music compliments of Shea Rose, while the rest of the crowd will likely pour into Slip 14, Straight Wharf and the Lobster Trap to celebrate the occasion. The Chicken Box, an island institution for over 50 years, is also a popular spot during Figawi weekend, with live music all weekend long.

On Sunday, the Figawi Tent Party continues with a joke telling ceremony in the morning followed by the traditional lobster clambake, awards ceremony and more live music. The trek back to Hyannis starts at 9:30am Monday morning.

Figawi hats, which debuted in the late 1970s, are highly prized accessories given only to the sailors in the race. Mount Gay embroiders hats specifically for each of their 140 sponsored regattas worldwide—including Figawi. No more than three are distributed to each finishing team, so veteran sailors see them as badges of honor. They also grant access to the Figawi tent and stealing them has become a tradition for island youth. Groups of teenagers have been known to devise elaborate schemes to obtain these sought after items. One or two will strike up a conversation with a sailor, while a runner will stealthily sneak up behind and grab it off the unsuspecting sailors’ head.

The escape

Figawi is a great time, but like any weekend party event you may want a break from the scene and noise. Cisco Brewery, Nantucket Vineyard and Triple Eight Distillery, located all together on Bartlett Farm Road, are the perfect place to engage in a little festive behavior away from the crowd. Enjoy a large assortment of freshly brewed craft beer at Cisco, including their famous Whale’s Tale Pale Ale. Triple Eight Vodka has become somewhat of a local (and mainland) favorite too. The “Figawi Wowie” which is comprised of their signature blueberry vodka, lemonade and soda water is a favorite among the race weekend crowd and pretty much all summer long.

Figawi: the history of figawi race weekend and a guide for attendees.

Post by Becky at Dockwa - Published on 05/10/22 13:00 PM

figawi sailboat race nantucket

The History of Figawi

Figawi Race Weekend typically kicks off with a party at Hyannis Yacht Club, a 230-boat pursuit race from the Hyannis Port Jetty to Nantucket Boat Basin, a Saturday night tent party for skippers, crew, and sponsors, Sunday morning's Joke Telling Session, Figawi's Invitational for high school sailing teams, prize giving, and finally Monday's "Redux" Race back to Hyannis. Whew! It's no small feat, and yet, as any Figawi racer will tell you, after 50 years of practice, this event is run like a well-oiled machine.

So, how did Figawi Race Weekend come into existence? As the story is often told: Three friends were having drinks at Baxter's Bar in Hyannis, MA, each one certain that his boat was the fastest of the three. To settle the dispute once and for all, they decided to race from Hyannis to Nantucket.

During the heated competition and completely lost in the fog, one of the sailors shouted, "Where the f**k are we?" which, with a little Cape Cod twang, sounded like " where the figawi!"

Finally, the boats made it safely into port and decided it was a grand idea to run the race year after year on Memorial Day, and thus the tradition that is Figawi Race Weekend was born. But as with most sailing adventures, there's always more to the story.

Seeking the truth, I decided to ask someone who lived it, so I jumped at the chance to lunch at the Hyannis Yacht Club with Connie Horan, Charlene Horan, Jeanne Luby, and her daughter Karen Luby, the wives and daughter of Bob Horan, Joe Horan, and Bob Luby, respectively, the original Figawi three. Like Figawi, lunch was a lively affair right out of the gate, as the group immediately began comparing injuries, swapping stories and updates on friends, and reminiscing.

As we start chatting about Figawi, Charlene, Joe's wife, describes the three sailors and life-long friends as "friends and brothers. Characters and fun from day one. They were spontaneous and hard-working. They weren't doctors or lawyers; they were men, all self-taught sailors that didn't belong to a club or take lessons."

When it came to sailing, they were diligent, taking responsibility and the right measures to ensure the race was fair and safe. Spontaneous as they were, Figawi was a long time in the making.

As the story goes, “a few friends thought a nice, competitive sail to Nantucket would be a fun way to spend the weekend. Therefore, with wives and a few friends aboard, the skippers headed out to see who had the fastest boat in getting to the island.”

But as the Figawi wives describe it, the entire winter leading up to Memorial Day 1972 was one rife with taunt-filled bar challenges at the Old Yarmouth Inn as the guys worked and played hard, getting excited about summer on the water. The night they finally decided to run the race was at Baxter's. So, according to Figawi's first families, the race truly started at the Old Yarmouth Inn, over many, many darts games.

"They were all loudmouths," Connie adds. "But then one day at Baxter's, it was a done deal. It just got dreamed up elsewhere."

All of the tauntings finally culminated the weekend before Memorial Day 1972. The men and their families decided that they'd race to Nantucket the following weekend if the weather were nice.

figawi-1

The First Figawi

"If the weather was nice" was a big if. The weather wasn't rainy or hazardous, but it wasn't exactly a picturesque day on the water. The first Figawi was foggy and chilly, but the rain held off, so the race was a go. Charlene sailed while Joe, Connie, Jeanne, and Karen went ahead to welcome the boats to the docks of Nantucket.

Bob Horan raced with Jim Horan on Caribou, an old wooden boat built in 1941, heavy but strong.

"When it was rough, the boat could handle it. But we couldn't go the same speed as some fiberglass boats."

Bob "Red" Luby sailed aboard Red Rooster, a 34' Islander, and Joe Horan with Charlene and Sully aboard Ares.

"Joe [Horan] got off to a fast start and tried to run Red up onto the rocks over near Baxter's Boathouse Club. But Red had the faster boat and sailed a helluva race," Joe Hoffman said

"So here we are, sailing in the fog, in circles," Charlene added. She was above deck when Joe went below to check their coordinates. After some time, he popped his head back up and shouted the phrase that sailed a thousand ships. "Where the figawi!"

"It's not very pretty," Connie says about the race's namesake. "When they decided to make it an official race, the newspapers needed a printable name! So we had to come up with something and had just been told a joke about a lost Indian tribe, and that’s how they spelled it in the joke." And just like that, the race had a name the news could cover. "The spirit of Figawi is the thing. So it's a big deal."

Connie Horan was on the docks with Jeanne Luby and her daughter Karen, then ten years old, waiting for the boats to appear. Karen recalls:

"I was ten, and I remember standing on the dock waiting to see who won. We were freezing! It was so cold we were following the sun around Joe Lopes, the Harbormaster's dock. He came and got my mother, my brother, and myself and took us up into his office where it was warm. And I remember seeing my father come around first! We could see he had the big white flag with the big red rooster on it, and the really shiny mast. We could see them coming!"

"It was shiny," the group confirms. The moment they saw the boats coming is still thrilling to recount decades later. Then begins the discussion of what liquor was likely consumed. Galliano? Rum? Galliano.

"There were no festivities the first year, so we made our own entertainment."

The hearty crew made their way to Cap'n Tobey's for post-race libations, and the idea of Figawi began to take hold. In following years, the weekend included a lay day, with a clam bake on Sunday to feed the hungry crews. With the first outing in 1972 a success, the chatter started building and echoed throughout the following fall and winter. The consensus: Let's keep this going!

Bob Horan and fellow sailor and friend Bob Baker worked out the boat ratings, and the second race was in the works.

Members and guests of the Hyannis Yacht Club can view the Figawi trophy as they walk into the club's doors. The trophy has come a long way since the originals, which were hand-painted with markers on to plates during the race by John Linehan.

"I can still remember him sitting out there on his boat, where all the others were coming in, waiting to paint their names on a pie plate. John couldn't have passed a kindergartener's art class."

The Joke Tent

While there was always a ruckus to be made after even the first Figawi, the Joke Tent, or Joke Telling Session (JTS) as we know it now, didn't start until 1977. "We got a letter from Attorney Dick Anderson, who had the idea to start the joke session. Pretty soon, we had jokes from people in Marblehead who had doctorates, telling folklore."

Initially hosted downtown by the docks, as the crowd grew bigger and rowdier each year, the town grew to appreciate the language and enthusiasm less and less. Cut to 2018, where you'll see the 15,000 square foot party & joke tent Figawi has hosted for years – off the beaten path and out of earshot of tourists' hearing.

The rules of the JTS are as follows:

No race, color, creed, or sex is safe from attack

No subject matter is off-limits

A joke must be either a classic or fresh and funny

Only members of the Band of Angels are permitted to tell classics

While a joke-teller may appear more than once, only one story per trip to the balcony is allowed

The above rule is subject to change if, during the first trip, the teller is given the hook

Were there always unlimited mimosas and Bloody Marys? Connie laughs, "I always used to say, 'If you're smart, you won't book surgery at the Cape Cod Hospital Monday morning, because the doctors all raced.'"

From the first race of three boats, Figawi is now 230 boats strong and has included America's Cup boats and United States Senators. New faces have joined the ranks, and new boat technology helps sailors navigate the fog in Buzzards Bay, but the sense of family and mischief at Figawi remains.

As Jeanne recalls,

"After Bob died in 1996, the next Figawi I decided to go over, just to go. I meandered into the tent, where Dennis Sullivan was standing, and announced 'We are going to give a tribute to Red Rooster.' The tent was full of people, and all of a sudden all I could see was all these hats coming off. All the hats! And for what was supposed to be just a couple of minutes, it seemed like an eternity. It was just so quiet. What a feeling."

Also notable the year Bob passed away, the original Red Rooster returned from Maine to compete in the race.

"It came back when he died and got to the island first."

When Joe Horan passed away in 2005, the Figawi race that year was dedicated to him by Dennis Sullivan and Howie Penn. Charlene shares an especially fond memory of Nantucket, meeting her husband there in 1962. She shared that her son got involved in sailboat racing and met his wife at Figawi.

"Nantucket is just special," she said.

As Figawi has grown, so have the hearts of the sailors and community who take part, namely by way of Figawi Charities, Inc. Connie's pleased with how the people who became involved over the years have stayed involved, adding, "If there's one thing my husband would be proudest of, it's the good work that has come from this race."

Where the Figawi? The Ultimate Guide to Memorial Day Weekend on Nantucket

“Where the Figawi?” More than likely, you are probably thinking “What is the Figawi?” Unless you are from the Northeast or are well-versed in the sailing world, it’s likely you may have never heard this term before. Fear not, I’ve compiled the ultimate guide to everything you need to know about the legendary race and highly-anticipated party weekend known as Figawi.

Table of Contents

The Figawi Race is a world-renowned sailing regatta that takes place annually on Memorial Day Weekend in Massachusetts. It is the Northeast’s first major regatta of the summer sailing season. Each year, over two hundred sailboats of all sizes and thousands of sailors (or wannabe sailors like me!) participate in the race. The 25-mile race starts in Hyannis Port on Cape Cod and finishes at the entrance to Nantucket Island Harbor. 2019 will be the 48th Annual Figawi Race Weekend!

The first Figawi race took place in 1972 as an informal competition between 3 friends. Legend has it that Bob Horan, Joe Horan, and Bob Luby were having drinks one night at Baxter’s Boathouse in Hyannis Harbor. A friendly argument ensued about whose boat was the fastest of the three. They decided to settle the dispute by racing from Hyannis to Nantucket.

As any New Englander knows, the weather can be fickle and foggy and apparently the fog was quite thick that day. At some point during the race, blinded by the fog and with no GPS on board, one of the competitors shouted “Where the f*ck are we?” Of course, this was said in a thick Boston accent so it sounded more like “Where the Figawi?” And thus the name, and tradition, of Figawi Race Weekend was born.

The Schedule

The fun-filled weekend starts off on Friday of Memorial Day Weekend with registration from 3-8 PM, as well as the Annual Figawi Kick-off Party held at the Hyannis Yacht Club. Sailors from all over the country reconnect and gather for a buffet dinner, drinks, and entertainment. This is also where you get first dibs on the Figawi merchandise for sale (except for the infamous red hat – more on that later).

Pro-tip: Parking at Hyannis Yacht Club for the weekend, as well as drinks at the kick-off party, can ONLY be paid for in cash. Avoid this rookie mistake by hitting the ATM before coming to the party!

The night of revelry continues with the unofficial post-kick-off party bash at Baxter’s Boathouse, in Hyannis Harbor. There’s inevitably a good crowd and fun to be had here – but remember to take it somewhat easy on the adult beverages if you are sailing in the morning!

It’s Race Day! The regatta starts from the Hyannis Port Jetty at 10 AM, with staggered start times according to each boat’s rating continuing until 12 PM. The boats make their way across the Nantucket Sound and cross the finish line mid-afternoon. The start and finish of the race is fast-paced and exciting. But there is actually a fair amount of downtime during the middle of the race! I may or may not have been lulled into sleep by the waves.

Pro-tip: If you are not racing, head to Brant Point Lighthouse to watch the parade of sailboats make their way to the Nantucket Boat Basin after crossing the finish line!

One of my favorite parts of Figawi weekend is the camaraderie amongst the sailors. This is evidenced by the party that takes place in the Boat Basin after the race has finished. Sailors and non-sailors alike swarm the docks and make their way from boat to boat, catching up with friends and more than likely making new ones!

For racers, the Competitor Party at the Figawi Tent on New Whale Street in town starts at 7 PM. There is a live band, free-flowing drinks, dancing, and other revelry. Make sure to hold on tight to your bracelet because that is your ticket for entry! For the non-racers, unfortunately bracelets are only available for purchase ahead of time by race competitors. But don’t worry, there are plenty of other options for fun during Figawi weekend (keep reading below).

It is well-worth making your way to the tent for the Joke Telling Session from 9-11 AM. That is, if you can muster up the energy to get up that early after the tent shenanigans from the night before. The Figawi Bloody Mary acts as a much-needed “hair of the dog” remedy. The first year I raced I didn’t attend the joke telling session and ended up regretting it. The jokes are equally offensive to all races, genders, and religions and no subject matter is off limits. It is definitely one of the highlights of the weekend and an event you can’t really find anywhere else.

At 11:30 AM, the Figawi High School Invitational takes place in the Nantucket Boat Basin, and there is a Memorial Day parade through town starting at 1 PM. Sunday afternoon is usually filled with more party-hopping in the boat basin, shopping in town, or perhaps a much-needed nap.

Sailors make their way back to the Figawi Tent in time for the awards ceremony starting at 5 PM. Trophies are given out to the winners and top finishers of all 13 classes that competed in the race. There is also an award given to a well-deserving volunteer, and an award given to the team that most embodied the spirit of Figawi (either on land or on the sea).

The Sunday festivities conclude with a Wrap-Up Party held for competitors starting at 7 PM in the Figawi Tent. The Sunday night tent party is a déjà vu of the night before with a live band, dancing, drinks, and more debauchery. Just remember that there is still a sail back to Hyannis the following morning!

All good things must come to an end. On Monday morning, willing sailors participate in the “Redux Race” from Nantucket Harbor back to a neutral point near Hyannis. For those still standing, there is a Farewell Party held at Baxter’s for new and old friends to gather one more time before parting ways.

The Charity

Members of the Figawi organizing committee capitalized on the growing popularity of Figawi Race Weekend and added a Charity Ball as a way to give back to the local communities. The first black-tie ball took place in 1987 and continues to be held annually in Hyannis the Saturday before Memorial Day Weekend. The proceeds from the ball go to local charities and over $2 million have been donated to date.

The infamous “Figawi hat” is the most coveted souvenir from the race – partly because it cannot be bought, only earned (or stolen!). Mount Gay Rum embroiders hats with the name and date of each of the 140 regattas they sponsor worldwide, including Figawi. The red and yellow baseball caps made their debut for Figawi in the late 1970s and have been a sought-after item ever since.

However, only 3 hats are included in the Skipper’s Bag given to the captain of each registered boat. Each crew is made up of 8-12 team members on average, so even if you sail in the race you are still not guaranteed to get a hat! I was a lucky recipient of a hat in the first Figawi race I sailed in 2016. I think the captain took pity on me because I almost went overboard on one particularly gnarly tack! It’s a badge of honor to receive a Figawi hat, and I treasure mine and the memories it brings with it.

As with most things on Nantucket, new and shiny items do not always outrank items of tradition and prestige. And so, the older the date embroidered on the Figawi hat, the more bragging rights the proud owner has since this shows how long they’ve been participating in the storied Figawi Race Weekend.

It has also become a tradition for the local island teens to devise schemes to steal these highly-prized hats off the heads of unsuspecting sailors! So if you are lucky enough to own a coveted Figawi hat, I recommend holding onto it tight!

The Party Scene

Long before I got the chance to sail in Figawi starting in 2016, I made an annual pilgrimage to Nantucket for Memorial Day Weekend to partake in the “other” side of Figawi. Though non-sailors can’t attend the tent parties (unless you finagle a bracelet from a race competitor) , there are plenty of other festivities taking place around the island. So you definitely don’t have to have sailed in the race to have a good time during Figawi weekend! In fact, I’m not so sure many of the visitors to the island during Figawi weekend even realize that there is a sailing race taking place!

I must warn you, however, that you either need to have a local island connection to get you in the back entrance to one of these bars, or be prepared for a VERY long wait in line. With that in mind, here are the top spots on the island to find the fun:

Straight Wharf

While the Straight Wharf is actually a fancy restaurant at dinnertime, it transforms into an outdoor hotspot during the day over Figawi weekend and a dance club after hours every weekend during the summer. Actually, it’s not unusual to see a full-on dance party at noon on Sunday during Figawi. Make sure to order their signature drink, the Goombay Smash, or a Life Is Good while you’re there. And if you make it to last call, you’ll be serenaded with Sinatra’s “Summer Wind” to end your night.

This bare bones structure in Harbor Square is also the epicenter of Figawi weekend. Sandwiched between the Straight Wharf and The Tavern, there is a never-ending line to secure a spot in this open-air bar in the shape of (you guessed it) a gazebo. If you make it in, you can’t miss their signature mudslides (ask for it to be made with Tito’s and real Kahlua!).

Ok, so this is not technically a “hot spot.” Oddly enough, even though The Tavern is part of the Harbor Square trifecta alongside the Straight Wharf and the Gazebo, it rarely draws a crowd. The Gazebo is actually part of the Tavern but there are different lines to get into each building. So, if you aren’t in the mood to stand in line for the entire day, you can easily grab a drink at The Tavern and watch the shenanigans at the Gazebo and Straight Wharf from afar while sitting on their outdoor patio.

Cru Oyster Bar is in the absolute perfect location for Figawi, at the end of Straight Wharf (the actual wharf itself, not the eponymous restaurant). Cru has floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides that overlook Nantucket Boat Basin and the harbor. And the party has been known to spill outside onto the boats docked in the slips parallel to the restaurant. Cru tends to draw a trendy “see-and-be-seen” crowd and you can bet that magnums of rosé will be popping in abundance over Figawi weekend.

Cisco Brewers

Cisco Brewery is a year-round favorite for locals and visitors alike who come to sample their ever-expanding selection of craft beers. This mid-island compound on Bartlett Road is actually also home to Nantucket Vineyards and the Triple Eight Distillery. These three buildings surround a courtyard filled with picnic tables, food trucks, and a stage for daily live music. Everyone from babies to grandparents to four-legged furry friends are welcome at Cisco.

Sample the latest craft beer release from the brewery, sip the made-fresh-daily sangria from the winery, or try a Figawi Wowie or Blueberry Lemonade from the distillery. Or head over to the outdoor Tiki Bar and order a “Blue-Haired Lady,” which is a Grey Lady beer with a Triple 8 blueberry vodka floater. Trust me, it is delicious!

Pro-tips: Take advantage of the free Cisco shuttle that makes regular rounds from the Visitor Center on Federal Street in town to the brewery. And make sure to bring cash to tip the driver and for the $5-10 cover you’ll be charged at the entrance!

The Chicken Box

You can’t come to Nantucket and not experience a night out at The Box. The Box is a no-frills, dive bar located mid-island (yes, Nantucket has a dive bar!). For Figawi weekend in particular, you’ll need to show up super early to avoid the line that will inevitably form down the street. There’s usually a $20 cover and a live band every weekend night. Although if you get there early enough, you can avoid a cover and kill time playing pool or shuffleboard until the band comes on.

Pro-tip: After-party plans are usually made outside the Box after last call if you want to keep the party going until the wee hours of dawn!

Figawi returning to Nantucket Memorial Day Weekend

View fullscreen

The Figawi tent on Nantucket.

( Jan. 31, 2023 ) After a three-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the annual Figawi sailboat race will return to its traditional Hyannis to Nantucket route Memorial Day Weekend.

“We’re definitely going back (to Nantucket). I can confirm that. As to what the on-shore events are going to look like, right now that’s really up in the air and we hope to have some better information on that in a couple of weeks,” Figawi president Chris Kelsey told The Inquirer and Mirror Tuesday.

“The reason for that is we want to make sure that after being away for a few years that we’re all on the same page with Figawi and with the police department, the fire department, the town of Nantucket, the boat basin. We want to make sure that everybody is comfortable with what the plan is.”

The race was canceled due to COVID-19 in 2020 and the past two years was held only in the waters off Hyannis. Kelsey said he has already heard from a number of previous participants who are excited to get back to the typical race format.

figawi sailboat race nantucket

“People are thrilled. We sort of started with a soft opening over a week ago. We just went live within the last week but before we event went live, we had over 30 boats signed up,” Kelsey said. “So I’m anticipating that it’s going to be a great year and a great race.”

Figawi, which is marking its 52nd year, traditionally starts in Hyannis the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend, with participants staying over on Nantucket Saturday and Sunday nights, and racing back to Hyannis Monday. Party tents have been erected on the National Grid property along the downtown waterfront for participants and guests.

The event for years has had a checkered reputation, often more for the visitors who come to the island for the holiday weekend then the racers themselves, who face expulsion from future races for misbehavior.

After a three-year hiatus, Figawi returned to Nantucket over the weekend for the 52nd edition of the race from Hyannis to Nantucket. While the event was scaled back compared to pre-COVID-19 years, including the elimination of the party tent along the waterfront, the event brought 125 registered boats and hundreds of participants to the Nantucket Boat Basin and Nantucket Harbor.

Photographers Shane Riley, Charity Grace Mofsen and Kit Noble captured these images of the boats arriving in Nantucket Harbor Saturday afternoon.

51st annual race weekend morphs to include regional sailing teams.

HYANNIS — Figawi returns to Hyannis Yacht Club to race Nantucket Sound over Memorial Day weekend, and while sailors are always welcome spend time on Nantucket, the party remains anchored in Hyannis.

The crew of Wings gets tossed in the waves during last year's Figawi, when weather postponed Saturday's race. More photos at www.capecodtimes.com/news/photo-galleries.

More than 50 boats have already registered, and Figawi Chairman Chris Standish said he has reached out to high school sailing coaches throughout New England to increase student participation.

"The weather last year and COVID were big setbacks," Standish said by phone Thursday. "According to the Farmer's Almanac, we should be OK."

In past years, participants raced from Hyannis to Nantucket, and the post-race tent parties were on the island.

"The boat basin over there is open; the struggle is that we need to make a commitment really early," Standish said.

Again this year, the Hyannis Yacht Club on Lewis Bay will serve as  race headquarters.

What this year has in store

The format  remains the same: two days of buoy racing on set courses with the finish back at Hyannis. The long-distance pursuit races begin at 10 a.m. off the Hyannisport jetty on Saturday and Sunday. The boats will make their way out to the start line between 8 and 10 a.m., and spectators are invited to watch from Kalmus Beach.

“The youth race has been ramped up,” Standish said. “We're bringing in the entire sailing teams from this area. They get a tent during the day. There will be activities for them. They’ll get a chance to talk to all the coaches."

Standish said organizers look forward to growing the high school races for the Crawford Cup, named for the charity's longtime chairman, into a premier regional event.

"Next year, we plan to open registration to a much broader group of schools and get athletic departments involved," he said.

One thing that hasn't changed: Sailing World Magazine still ranks Nantucket Sound as one of the top U.S. places to sail.

It all goes down at 490 Ocean St. Onsite registration begins at 3 p.m. Friday, May 27, and there will be live entertainment from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday night's tent party is organized as a thank you to race participants. Details at www.figawi.com. About 52nd Annual Figawi Regatta Weekend... A true harbinger of summer, the annual Figawi Race from Cape Cod to Nantucket has earned widespread recognition, not only as a prestigious sailing event, but as one of New England’s best parties of the year. People from all over swarm the Island on Memorial Day weekend – decked out in Nantucket Reds and other nautical attire – to be part of the Figawi scene.

Figawi Race 2023: Where the “fog” are we!?

figawi race 2021

History of the Figawi Race

As the legend goes, Bob Horan, Joe Horan, and Bob Luby, three friends and self-taught sailors spent the winter of 1972 ribbing one another about whose sailboat was fastest. After a few drinks at Baxter’s Boathouse, the men decided to race from Hyannis to Nantucket on Memorial Day weekend. They set out and soon were surrounded by thick fog, and in the days before radar one of them yelled to the others with that distinctive Cape Cod accent, “Where the f*ck are we?!” Their race needed a name- one that could be printed in the papers- thus Figawi was born.

boat sailing fast cape cod figawi race

The Figawi Race itself begins at the Hyannis Port Jetty, with staggered starts in a pursuit style race. Boats are arranged based on their size, speed, and a number of other factors, with the faster boats starting last. The race takes a few hours, and the stagger means that most boats reach the Nantucket Boat Basin around the same time. A high school invitational sailing race on Sunday and race back to Hyannis on Monday are also part of the festivities.

While the race has grown larger over the years, it’s maintained the feeling of a lively family reunion for the New England sailing community. It draws boats from all over, and sailors of all abilities.

boats sailing big waves cape cod figawi race

While the trophies have gotten a bit spiffier since the original paper plates decorated with markers, the red Figawi Race hats are the real sought-after item. Each boat only gets three, which function as a ticket into the party and bragging rights. Hold onto your hats, as island teens have taken to snagging them off the heads of unsuspecting sailors in town!

The Sunday morning joke tent is a great spot to nurse a hangover with a bloody mary or mimosa, though salty jokes abound, so it’s not for those easily offended!

In addition to the revelry, Figawi Charities Inc has worked to raise nearly two million dollars for local groups, aiming to foster camaraderie and support the local community. They’ve hosted a Charity Ball in Hyannis the week before the race since 1987.

Figawi Race 2023

As with so many things, the last couple years of the Figawi race have been anything but typical. Due to the pandemic, the Figawi Race was forced to skip the 2020 race, and the next two years didn’t involve the usual festivities on Nantucket.

While this year’s Figawi Race will once again include sponsor engagements on the Nantucket Boat Basin Docks, due to logistic circumstances there is no plan for the traditional Figawi Tent events.

The event kicks off with registration and welcome party for skippers at the Hyannis Yacht Club at 3 pm on Friday, May 26th, with live music.

On Saturday, May 29th, the 52nd Figawi Race kicks off at 10 am, leaving from the Hyannisport Jetty. The style will again be a Long-distance PHRF Pursuit Race.

Spectators can watch from Kalmus Beach as the boats make their way out to the start line between 8-10am, or catch the finish line at the entrance to Nantucket Habor.

Where The Figawi Will Go, Hyannis To Nantucket – Slideshow

Figawi

Where’s the Figawi? Sailors have been asking that since 1972, when the first Figawi boat race was held between Hyannis and Nantucket and some sailor allegedly asked something that sounded like, “Where the figawi?”

According to folklore, they were just off Nantucket in a thick fog.

And with that, the race that began with four boats on Memorial Day weekend had a name. The Figawi race has grown into a major event with 226 boats participating this year, and a charity that raises about $200,000 every year for local causes.

Besides the race, the Figawi is also a huge party after the race on Nantucket with sailors, having finished the obviously arduous journey from Hyannis to the Island, are finally ready to let off a bit of steam and have some fun.

Our Nantucket sources have told us that the sailors do indeed have fun on the Island. Sometimes, we have been told, they have too much fun. As if such a thing exists.

Sail safe, everyone. Here’s what it looked like mid-week. These photos were taken from something that more resembled a ferry than a racing boat.

Okay, it was a ferry. We never know where the figawi either.

Hunt Yachts Harrier 26-2016-OSPREY Wilmington-North Carolina-United StatesOSPREY 3234641

DETAILS ABOUT THIS BOAT

OSPREY is a fine example of a very hard-to-come-by 2016 Hunt Harrier 26 powered with the optional Yamaha 300hp outboard motor with only 215 hours. Lift-kept with custom sun covers, she shows beautifully with her Stars & Stripes blue hull, Oyster White boot stripe and black bottom. In 2018 the Yamaha outboard motor was painted to match the gelcoat and a faux teak transom was applied, nice custom touches done by the Hinckley Company. Properly maintained and serviced (full outboard motor service, with computer check and compression test, March 2022) make OSPREY a true ‘turn key’ offering. This is a great opportunity to acquire a nearly-new Hunt Harrier 26 in time for Spring!
