President Rob Holden

Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club

A meeting was held of boating enthusiasts at the Marine Hotel in Bland Street on Wednesday, September the 24th, 1956, (sources differ with regard to the exact day), where the go-ahead for the formation of a Yacht Club was unanimously approved. Captain N. P. Nell, Marine Assistant, was in the chair until the meeting was properly constituted and he informed the gathering that it was important for the proposed Club to closely co-operate with the Harbor Administration. It was decided from the floor that the newly formed Club would embrace the use of all types of boats from the small sailing boat to the larger yacht. The Club would be known as the Mossel Bay Yacht Club and Mr. C. H. Shepherd was elected as the first Commodore, Dr. P. Johnston as Vice-Commodore, Mr. A. de Villiers as Rear-Commodore and Mr. M. Stephens as Secretary-Treasurer. The Committee requested Mr. T. Meek to assist them with the drafting of a constitution and get the Club going. It was agreed that membership would be open not only to Mossel Bay, but also to Oudtshoorn, George and Knysna. An official application was made to the Harbor Administration, the first annual general meeting held, and the present day Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club took its first steps.

New era for yacht club

New era for yacht club

MOSSEL BAY NEWS - Great plans may be realised in about two months' time to transform what is known now as the Mossel Bay Yacht and Boat Club (MBYBC).

This follows after the Western Cape High Court on Monday, 30 April turned down the MBYBCs application to review and set aside a decision of the Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) Committee in terms of which a tender for the premises occupied by the yacht club was awarded to Mossel Bay Waterfront (Pty) Ltd.

The application was dismissed with costs. The court found that the MBYBC "failed to prove the alleged non-compliance with specifications, prescripts, requirements or conditions which would render the tender unacceptable or non-responsive".

Despite the management of the MBYBC publicly stating that it intends to appeal the outcome, the Waterfront Company is raring to go with the implementation of plans that, they argue, "will offer Mossel Bay residents exciting prospects from a unique venue and will increase the tourism offering in town exponentially".

When asked for comment by the Mossel Bay Advertiser, MBYBC president Wilhelm von Schütz said the club would be appealing the High Court decision.

Transnet initially agreed to stay their eviction order pending the outcome of the review application, which has now been dismissed.

All in all, the Waterfront Company plans on effecting their plans for the venue within the next six to eight weeks.

"By no means do we want the demise of the MBYBC as an entity. To the contrary, the Waterfront Company has on at least three occasions invited the management of the MBYBC to discussions on how we may work together to grow both the club and the venue," Waterfront Company director Albe Durand told the Mossel Bay Advertiser.

Durand made special mention of his legal team, Gerhard de Villliers-Moore of Mossel Bay and thanked them for their continued support.

Great plans are afoot to open a top-notch restaurant at the current MBYBC facilities that will cater to tourists and Mossel Bay residents alike. Photo: K Slater

Exciting plans He stresses, however, that the Waterfront Company wants to embark on a new era for the venue. The company has a completed and all-inclusive environmental impact assessment and safety protocol and has several exciting plans that will allow the community greater access not only to improved facilities but also to programmes that will benefit a much wider spectrum.

As is currently the case, much of the premises will still be available exclusively to members only, but a separate entrance for the general public will allow unhindered access to the restaurant and certain other facilities.

"There is no doubt that the existing facilities are in dire need of upgrade and renovation. This we will see to. Residents can expect a top-notch restaurant that will add to the atmosphere on the quay.

"A walkway that will eventually link the Point area with Santos beach is another exciting development that will unlock the harbour for tourists and locals. Imagine people taking a stroll from Santos beach to the restaurants along the quay, or visiting sailors having easier, more pleasant access to the town."

The existing deck at the yacht club restaurant will be extended to enhance the outdoor experience for restaurant patrons.

Parking Durand emphasises the importance of safety and parking and says plans are proceeding well with TNPA to have the existing parking on the quay extended, with additional lighting provided and additional parking space being made available.

"We intend to guarantee safe and exclusive parking for the members of the MBYBC, as is currently the case. In fact, we want to make the membership offering so exciting that more local residents may want to join the MBYBC, albeit at a reduced monthly membership fee."

Moorings The Waterfront Company also plans refurbishment of the moorings, with specific emphasis on the gateway to the town where proper ablutions and a decent waiting area will replace the current ship's containers. This will add improved access to tourists, supporting the Mossel Bay Municipality’s drive for tourism.

If the MBYBC insists on not working with the Waterfront Company, Durand says they will consider forming a club.

"The benefits will be tremendous; we plan on installing a telemetric system that will link several of the local businesses in the hospitality industry. Plans are well advanced in this respect. The visitor will be able to sit at the yacht club and have deliveries from another restaurant.

"The Waterfront Company sees itself adding to the already exciting calendar of festivals and happenings in town and plans to become a much-valued partner in offering locals and tourists an unforgettable experience while boosting the economy."

TNPA issued eviction notice to Mossel Bay Yacht Club Transnet National Ports Authority’s (TNPA) Port of Mossel Bay confirms that it has issued a notice to the Mossel Bay Yacht Club (MBYC) to vacate its port premises by the end of May 2018. This in accordance with the terms of a High Court order dated 30 April 2018 which dismissed the application by MBYC to review and set aside the lease application awarded by TNPA to successor lessee Mossel Bay Waterfront Pty Ltd in October 2016.

Port of Mossel Bay Port Manager, Shadrack Tshikalange, said TNPA welcomed the judgement.

“We are confident that this decision will enable the port and the new lessee – through its strong business model – to provide all members of society with an equal opportunity to participate in port activities. This is in line with TNPA’s Smart People’s Ports vision, which includes promoting greater public access and ensuring a vibrant port system that connects local communities to port activities,” he said.

The tender was awarded to the Mossel Bay Waterfront, a Mossel Bay based, woman-owned micro-enterprise.

Judge AJ Langa in his judgment said: “Judged against the values of fairness, equitableness, transparency, competitiveness and effectiveness, the third respondent’s [Mossel Bay Waterfront] tender complies with all the specifications and conditions of tender as set out in the contract documents.”

He found that the tender was neither unreasonable nor irrational and that the Mossel Bay Waterfront’s bid was fully compliant with the terms of the lease. MBYC had occupied premises within the port on a lease agreement which continued on a month to month basis by agreement until a new tender was advertised for the premises in August 2016.

MBYC and Mossel Bay Waterfront were the only contesting bidders for the new tender. The lease was subsequently awarded to Mossel Bay Waterfront.

The High Court found that points awarded in the tender process to Mossel Bay Waterfront were justified for new skills development, job creation and/or preservation, small business promotion and rural / community development and regional integration.

MBYC is required to vacate the premises by 31 May 2018.

As ports landlord, TNPA operates within a legislative and regulatory environment created by the National Ports Act No.12 of 2005. This requires the Authority to follow a public process for service providers looking to provide port services and facilities.

“How does one define a MBYBC boating member?” Well the answer is quite simple, all boating members have one thing in common … and that is that they all believe that “a day spent on the water is much better than a day spent on land!”

The Boating (and Angling) section of MBYBC consists of the members who operate powered water crafts from the MBYBC club grounds. Not only does the club offer a safe and well-kept slip, it also boasts a wash bay and secure parking facilities for your boat and trailer within the club grounds.

As a boating member, you have access to the pristine waters of Mossel Bay, and on your return you can share stories of the day while enjoying the atmosphere at the Bar or under the trees while your fire is getting the party started. For those with a competitive spirit you can take part in the annual deepsea angling competitions which run on a regular basis which is always a source of fun. Clearly the range of boating activities is endless and one can pick and choose to your heart’s desire.

Both boats and Jet Ski’s are required to sign the launch register before heading out to sea. The register can be found next to the Office Manager’s door (outside). The register must be completed in full with all details required entered.

Since the law changed in 2007 and was implemented from March 2009 all vessels are regulated by SAMSA (South African Marine Safety Authority) as follows:

Any vessel from 15hp or greater must comply with safety regulations and have the applicable skippers ticket

You must have a Certificate of Fitness (COF) for your craft – RENEWED ANNUALLY through an appointed agent.

You must have a Certificate of Competence (COC) for you the skipper. The COC is obtainable through a SAMSA authorised agent and does not need to be renewed annually but you can upgrade to a higher certificate.

You must have a buoyancy certificate for your craft (minimum 30% buoyancy issued by SAMSA appointed agents)

The regulations are policed and enforced by SAMSA agents and the water wing police and you will be checked at clubs and launch sites

To use a Jetski at sea: Just like any other craft your Jetski category will depend on its construction (must be over 3 metres) and you must have the relevant safety equipment for that category

Most vessels that launch from MBYBC fall within the following 3 categories:

Category C (15 nautical miles)

Category D (Operating less than 5 Nautical Miles from shore)

Category E (Operating not more than 1 Nautical Mile from shore)

Please remember: Although your skippers ticket might give you permission to fish at 15 nautical miles, if you have a boat in REGISTERED in Category D YOU MAY ONLY FISH IN WATERS WITHIN 5 NAUTICAL MILES.

You must have a Certificate of Fitness (COF) for your craft – RENEWED ANNUALLY through an appointed agent

mossel bay yacht and boat club

The Alamitos Bay Yacht Club hosted the 2024 ILCA, 29er & I420 Midwinters West Regatta over the weekend, with more than 200 entries participating — making it the biggest regatta in Long Beach in three decades.

As a part of the trophy presentation on Sunday, regatta co-chair Ed Spotskey commended the yacht club’s staff.

“The staff is always just taken for granted: they ran a clinic, had one day off and then started five days of the biggest regatta in 30 years,” Spotskey said. “It was an absolute honor to bring them in front of all those people and I actually left the podium and stood out front and talked about them as being the backbone of this property. With endless 12-hour days, silently behind the scenes.”

Besides recognizing ABYC’s staff contribution to the regatta’s success, volunteers Judy Mathias and Mary Riddick – both more than 90 year old – were lauded for their commitment and dedication to ABYC.

The club was buzzing with young people from all over the world, many getting their first taste of being in Long Beach as they gear up for the 2028 Olympics.

All four days of the regatta, I kept thinking about what kind of first impression the city made on those young people.

It did seem, after all, as if the weekend highlighted the quintessential Long Beach experience.

I looked at Marine Stadium and there were university students competing in the Gruenberg Cup (more on that later). As I drove by the sailing center on Sunday morning, folks were getting ready for the 12th Annual Adler paddle out.

Saturday night brought Landslide, a Fleetwood Mac tribute band to the Long Beach Arena, where they performed “Tusk” with Poly’s marching band.

It was special to see so many of the people that had volunteered at the regatta over the weekend.

I’ve often thought that we live in a pretty extraordinary place: Alamitos’s Bay is almost a storybook land for our children to learn how to swim and learn various water sports in a safe, happy environment with so many spectacular events.

As I watched those young sailors that dream of coming back to Long Beach for the Olympics, I was convinced we made a great first impression.

The Collegiate Rowing Regatta took place on Saturday, March 23, at Marine Stadium.

The hosts, Long Beach State, competed against San Diego State and USC the 2,000-meter races the Gruenberg Cup, with the Trojans taking top honors.

The regatta featured four races for the men’s crews. On the women’s side, the event was only a scrimmaging opportunity for the three teams.

The 12th annual Adler Paddle, which took place in Alamitos Bay on Sunday, March 24, featured 40 people competing in the race commemorating Steve Adler, who died from a genetic disorder called a thoracic aortic dissection.

Organizers reminded everyone of the importance of knowing your genetic health history, as it can save your life or a loved one’s life. All proceeds from raffle ticket and T-shirt sales went to The John Ritter Foundation.

Racing was canceled on the opening day of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch because of dolphin activity on the course for the duration of the race window.

In line with SailGP protocol, racing was delayed to allow the dolphin to pass through safely. Unfortunately, it did not move outside the course area, which prevented racing from taking place.

ESPN+’s new series “Tryouts” will premiere on April 10 — and will highlight Long Beach’s lifeguards as they try to earn a spot on the elite rescue team.

Candidates must prove they have the physical and mental fortitude to endure the ocean and make quick, lifesaving decisions.

Nearly 100 applicants test their abilities in swimming and running, as well as a high-pressure interview, to prove they have what it takes to be a Long Beach Lifeguard.

Due to an editing glitch a couple of weeks ago, the USC sailing team was not properly acknowledged for taking second place in the college keel boat regatta hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club. USC was leading the regatta going into the final day on Sunday.

The sailing team trains locally out of the US Sailing Center Long Beach and Executive Director Mike Segerblom, a USC alum and All-American SC sailor, coached the USC team at the Harbor Cup.

Most of the USC sailors had no keelboat experience; instead, they only had dinghy experience. Segerblom coached the USC team over several practice sessions within a month of the Harbor Cup on a Catalina 37, according to an email from team member Tim Smith.

The USC skipper was sophomore Morgana Manti, from Italy, and she was the only female skipper at this year’s Harbor Cup.
