Massive superyacht with helicopter pad docks in Victoria
A 62-metre superyacht has made B.C.'s capital its latest port of call.
The three-year-old Anawa yacht, built by Netherlands-based Damen Yachting, arrived at the Van Isle Marina in Sidney on Sunday, before travelling down to Ship Point in Victoria on Monday.
The superyacht, estimated to be worth $100 million by website superyacht.com , could still be seen docked in Victoria's Inner Harbour on Tuesday.
"Key features of the Polar Class yacht include a fully certified helideck and hangar, two tender garages, a dive store and plentiful storage facilities to ensure 30 days autonomy on the water," said superyacht magazine Boat International in August 2020, when the vessel was first unveiled.
According to Boat International , the Anawa is just one of 190 motor yachts in the world that measures between 60 to 70 metres, and is in the top five per cent of vessels in terms of length overall.
Website superyachtfan.com reports that the Anawa is owned by Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, who has an estimated net worth of 15.2 billion USD, according to Forbes Magazine's list of the world's richest billionaires in 2023 .
The 83-year-old started his career in investment banking before becoming a controlling shareholder of Anheuser-Busch InBev, a brewing company that makes more than 500 brands, including Budweiser, Stella Artois and Modelo.
Lemann also has stakes in Restaurant Brands International, which is the parent company of Tim Hortons, Burger King, Popeyes and Firehouse Subs, according to Forbes.
The Anawa has an annual operating cost of about $10 million, according to superyachtfans.com.
The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority (GVHA) says it has hosted superyachts before, but this one is particularly large.
"It is most likely the largest ship we've had moored at Ship Point," said Stella Garcia, manager of communications for the GVHA.
Anyone interested in looking at the vessel should make their way down to the harbour soon.
"We can't tell you how long it's going to be here for, but we do hope to see it again," said Garcia.
"It's a rare thing and I think that's what makes living in a port city so exciting."

The visiting Anawa certainly puts the “super” in superyacht.
The 203-foot-long vessel dwarfed most of the other vessels in Victoria Harbour on Tuesday. The MV Coho is larger at 341 feet, but it doesn’t have the same swag — the Anawa carries its own helicopter on deck.
Anawa was custom-designed and built in 2020 by Damen Yachting. It’s one of the company’s SeaXplorer class of vessels, billed as “long-range, luxury expedition” yachts.
It can carry 12 guests and 15 crew plus a captain, Damen said.
It’s owned by Brazilian billionaire Jorge Paulo Lemann, according to superfanyacht.com. Forbes.com says the investor-philanthropist lives in Switzerland and is worth $14.8 billion.

24 Feb Superyacht Zenith Back In Victoria
Last year I got a close up glimpse of Zenith as it was docked in the inner harbour here although this time I had a much better camera. This beautiful 40 meter yacht was on the market at one point for $25,000,000 and to even charter something like this here is going to easily cost $100,000+ a week. I imagine its owner is thoroughly enjoying the yachting experience here in BC and I’m just glad to even be able to see it in person.
I was down previously looking at the $5,000,000 Afterglow which has been in the harbour for over a month and it’s so strange to see how Zenith just trumps over it. If you love majestic yachts I highly recommend heading down to the harbour to see Zenith before she sets sail again, and it looks like she turned around at some point yesterday. As always, if the owner reads this and would love to have me onboard for some photos then please do get in touch. It’s a long shot but hey, you never know. I’ll bring you some beer…
Have a super-yacht? You could soon park it in Victoria's harbour
Single luxury yacht can inject up to $880k into victoria economy, says concept's backer.
Social Sharing
There's a new high-end real estate offering in Victoria for the world's wealthiest. After nearly a decade of planning, construction has started on a marina for super-yachts.
The $24-million Victoria International Marina will provide 28 slips for luxury vessels that are between 20 and 46 metres long. That means the largest yachts that park at the new marina will be bigger than the Clipper passenger ferry that operates in Victoria's harbour.
The company behind the project hopes to capitalize on what it describes as a shortage of super-yacht moorage on the B.C. Coast.
"There really isn't any slips left of that size on the island. Even in Vancouver they are in minimum supply," Craig Norris, CEO of Community Marine Concepts, told host Gregor Craigie on CBC Radio's On The Island .
The marina hopes to be home base for some yachts by offering a 40-year lease for seven of the slips. The remaining spots will be available for visiting vessels, Norris said.
"We hope to really bring visitors to Victoria. There is a lot of transient moorage that will take place, usually during the summer time, when all boats are out and moving around."
A single luxury yacht, even just sitting in the harbour, injects between $700,000 and $800,000 into the local economy each year for services such as maintenance, gas, and moorage, Norris said.
When the yachts visit as part of their travels, those economic benefits jump even more, he added.
Amenities at the marina are expected to include a coffee shop and restaurant, which will be open to the public.
Community opposition
It hasn't been smooth sailing to get the marina project to this point. The concept received approval from Transport Canada back in 2012, but it has taken until now to start construction.
Critics have raised concerns about the size, location, and impact on safety in the busy harbour. The marina design has changed several times to address concerns and comply with regulations, the company said.
Still, some harbour users remain skeptical about the concept.
Victoria's harbour is already filled with ferries, float planes and recreational paddlers, and the addition of a marina full of super-yachts will change the character, said Barry Hobbis, vice-president of operations for Victoria Harbour Ferry.
"In my view, it is all folly," he said. "It's not well thought out. It's not well planned, and I am not at all confident that there is a 65-foot yacht owner that has pre-paid his moorage at that facility."
But some who live near the marina are looking forward to having new infrastructure in the area, such as a coffee shop and restaurant, Norris said.
"There's been a large amount of support. I will call it the silent majority over there, that are really interested in adding some infrastructure to their neighbourhood," he said.
The super-yacht marina is set to open in the spring of 2017.
