The Maxi "Morning Glory"

He had to wait ten years for this moment. On Saturday (September 8th) the time had finally come: After 1997, Hasso Plattner again won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo / Italy, the most prestigious sailing trophy for large yachts worldwide.

The prerequisites for a victory of the 26.60 meter long "Morning Glory", which starts under the stand of the Kiel Yacht Club, were initially not the best. Because off the coast of Sardinia, the CostSmeralda, only a light northwest breeze was blowing. And in light winds, as the crew of the German leader knew, the opposing "Loki" from Stephen Ainsworth (Australia) was strong. How strong is always difficult to judge during the races, because the sailing times of the differently sized and fast Maxis are converted into the evaluated time using a handicap factor. And because the "Loki" is significantly smaller, she usually sails far behind the "Morning Glory", but can still beat it. And that is exactly what Plattner feared.

When the 30 meter long super maxi "AlfRomeo" by Neville Crichton from New Zealand, which also won the 30 nautical mile race after just two hours and 34 minutes, was the first to round the windward buoy at Barettinelli after a long cross before it in the canal between the Sardinian mainland and the Maddalena Islands at the southern tip of Caprerging, everything was still on schedule. But then followed George David's "Rambler" before the "Titan XII" by Tom and Dotti Hill (both USA) and the Dutch "Favonius" by Roland Pieper. But where was the bigger "Morning Glory"?

At first it looked like she had some problem. First the boat steered away from the mark. Then the "Morning Glory" made a 360-degree turn, just as if it had to drive a penalty circle after a rule violation, but made sure that there was no other yacht nearby. Then, just as she was back on course and it looked as if the maxZ86 was picking up normal speed again, the mainsheet was suddenly lowered. The "Morning Glory" sailed after the competitors of the Racing Division almost casually or even negligently - with the exception of the "Loki", with whom it tied on points before the race. It was even further back.

Then it became obvious what the crew of the German maxi yacht was up to. Tactician Morgan Larson explained: "We had two strategies for the final day, depending on the wind speed. If the wind had been moderate or even fresher, we knew we would have had a good chance, as did the Loki on the water calculated to beat. In light winds it was exactly the opposite. We had looked at the results list again the previous night and found that the opponent had a worse result than us. So we just had to make sure that the 'Loki' still got a bad one Race sailed so we could cancel ours. " And that's exactly what they did after the windward barrel, uncompromising and unyielding, so that David really had no chance against Goliath.

Larson reported when and why the decision was made to cover the Australians: "Halfway to the windward buoy, we classified the wind as too light to beat. Then the 'Loki' is so fast and the crew so strong, that we seized the opportunity to sail them backwards. " And it succeeded. For the next four hours (the winner of the day only needed two and a half hours!) The two yachts were almost a hair's breadth close together, with the bigger one having complete control over the smaller one.

But Stephen Ainsworth's crew never gave up. Carefully estimated, the "Loki" sailed at least ten nautical miles extra to find a gap in the clutches of the "Morning Glory". In fact, she almost succeeded when the wind got so weak that the smaller boat was faster. In the daily standings she was only penultimate before the "Morning Glory", which celebrated its triumph after finishing second last year.

In the Mini Maxis, skipper Ken Read turned it up again in the final and steered the "Allsmoke" to the first win of the day and climbed to second place in the overall standings. The "AtalantII" had the overall victory already before the last start. After a slack in the middle of the regatt, the "Allsmoke" proved that it is also one of the top boats in its new class. Two years ago Günter Herz had won the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in what was then the cruising division.

There was also a happy ending for the shipowner Claus-Peter Offen on his new Wally "Y3K". In the final race she led clearly on the water under co-helmsman Karol Jablonski. According to the calculated time, only the overall winner "J One" was better, who - like the "Morning Glory" - won again for the first time in ten years. The "Y3K" but at least still beat their long-term rival "Magic Carpet Squared" of the "L’Oreal" boss Lindsay Owen-Johns from Great Britain.

From the luxurious to the traditional to simply the fastest monohulls of our time, the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup is nothing more than an astonishing array of sailing power. 38 yachts from eleven countries took part in the 18th edition, including Australia, Cayman Islands, France, Germany, Italy, Monaco, the Netherlands, New Zealand, San Marino, the United Kingdom and the USA.
