The multibillionaire was with a small group that included newlywed pals Ari Emanuel and Sarah Staudinger as they sailed the Aegean Sea on the “Zeus” — an almost $20,000-per-week motor yacht that can accommodate six guests in over three cabins and comes with a professional crew.

Musk, 51, boarded the swanky boat wearing a plain white T-shirt, black swim trunks, dark sunglasses, a black baseball cap and matching flip-flops.

The Tesla CEO soon stripped down to just his bathing suit and took a dive into the ocean. Once back on the yacht, Endeavor CEO Emanuel — long held to be the inspiration for fictional Hollywood agent Ari Gold in “Entourage” — hosed him down.

Musk was later seen enjoying a cocktail before the group headed out to explore the island.

The SpaceX founder — who recently confirmed to Page Six exclusively that he had welcomed his 10th child — did not seem the least bit bothered by Twitter’s massive lawsuit against him.

Elon Musk’s Viral Shirtless Photos Have Sparked A Conversation Around Body-Shaming After Some People Argued That He “Deserves” To See The Memes Mocking His Physique

“There are plenty of ways to criticize Elon Musk without engaging in body shaming.”

Leyla Mohammed

BuzzFeed News Staff

Earlier this week, billionaire Elon Musk was spotted out on a luxury vacation in Mykonos, Greece, with a group of friends.

The tech mogul was photographed shirtless aboard a luxury yacht in a series of pictures released by the paparazzi .

musk yacht photos

Well, the photos quickly captured the interest of countless people on the internet, as tons of Twitter users seemingly couldn’t help but comment on the 51-year-old’s physique.

musk yacht photos

The discourse quickly wound up inspiring a ton of memes making fun of Elon, with several people mocking his frame and comparing it to the likes of Immortan Joe and Dr. Robotnik .

musk yacht photos

And some users who made fun of Elon justified their tweets by drawing attention to his controversial lifestyle.

musk yacht photos

The wealthy business mogul, who has an estimated net worth of almost $300 billion, has long defended his wealth against people who deem him and other billionaires “ unethical ,” given that a large amount of the global population still lives far below the poverty line. However, he says he doesn’t consume “billions of dollars a year” for “personal” reasons.

The Tesla CEO also has a history of sharing ignorant tweets, memorably offending members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community when he unwarrantedly said that “ pronouns suck ” a couple of years ago. In fact, just last month, Elon’s transgender daughter cut ties with him completely, revealing that she didn’t want to be related to him in “any way, shape, or form” as she filed legal documents requesting to change her name.

What’s more, as several Twitter users mentioned, Elon has publicly body-shamed others himself. Back in April, he tweeted a photo of Bill Gates alongside the pregnant man emoji and wrote: “in case u need to lose a boner fast.”

So, some users argued that mocking Elon’s body was justified because of his controversial opinions.

“Body shaming is okay if it's someone we don't like,” one person wrote , while another suggested that billionaires “ don't deserve privacy .”

Others went so far as to tweet that Elon actually “deserves” to be body-shamed. “elon musk deserves it all idc,” read one comment referencing all of the memes about his frame.

Well, with the subject trending all over Twitter, it wasn’t long before Elon — a frequent user of the platform — actually entered the conversation himself to react to some of the remarks firsthand.

Responding to just two of the many memes circling the site, Elon firstly replied to someone who tweeted a picture of him shirtless and sipping a drink.

musk yacht photos

“Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!!” Elon wrote .

And then, in response to someone who placed a photo of the tech mogul beside a dog, implying that they looked alike, Elon simply quipped : “My calves are bigger tho.”

musk yacht photos

While Elon seemed unfazed by the ongoing mockery, several fans have since jumped to his defense and argued that “nobody deserves to be body shamed, regardless of who they are.”

“I keep seeing posts making fun of how Elon Musk looks while outside in his bathing suit and it honestly makes me sad. Nobody deserves to be body shamed, regardless of who they are,” one person tweeted. “Not only that, Elon probably won’t see your posts, but your friends with the same body type will.”

Elon Musk is taking the stir over his shirtless pictures aboard a yacht in Mykonos in stride — and turning them into motivation to hit the gym.

Exclusive photos obtained by Page Six this week showed a shirtless Musk slathered with sunscreen relaxing alongside William Morris Endeavor boss Ari Emanuel and his new bride Sarah Staudinger on their luxury yacht near the Greek island.

Musk laughed off the social media firestorm on Thursday in response to a post by the account @WholeMarsBlog, which took aim at critics poking fun at the Tesla billionaire’s physique.

“According to new CDC guidelines anyone posting a shirtless pick of @elonmusk to make fun of him must also post a shirtless pic of themselves for comparison,” the account said.

“Tbh, it’s good motivation to work out, eat healthier & maybe take my shirt off outside more than once a year haha,” Musk joked in response.

Tbh, it’s good motivation to work out, eat healthier & maybe take my shirt off outside more than once a year haha — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 21, 2022

The tweet marked the second time that Musk has made light of the photos since they surfaced.

My calves are bigger tho — Elon Musk (@elonmusk) July 19, 2022

Musk initially reacted to the pictures on Twitter shortly after they went viral.

“Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!! (already back in the factory btw),” Musk tweeted .

Musk found time to reply even as his camp prepped for a pending legal battle with Twitter over his decision to walk away from a $44 billion agreement to buy the company.

Delaware Chancery Court chief judge Kathaleen McCormick sided with Twitter this week in approving an expedited trial for the company’s lawsuit. Twitter is seeking to force Musk to follow through on the agreement’s original terms by court order.

The trial is scheduled to take place over five days in October. Musk’s team has argued he was justified in nixing the Twitter deal due to lingering questions about the number of spam bots within the social media app’s user base.

Musk has publicly questioned Twitter’s repeated claim that fake accounts comprise less than 5% of its users.

A $30 million Instagram-famous superyacht in the Caribbean has installed Elon Musk's Starlink internet

  • A $30 million superyacht has installed SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet.
  • SpaceX CEO Elon Musk said the news was "cool" in a Twitter post.
  • The captain told Teslarati that Starlink was a game-changer, but didn't work when crossing the Atlantic.

Insider Today

Starlink, SpaceX's satellite internet, is now up and running on an Instagram-famous $30 million superyacht based in the Bahamas and the Caribbean.

Teslarati first reported the news. The captain and a spokesperson for the yacht confirmed the news to Insider.

Motor yacht Loon, billed as the world's most Instagrammed superyacht with "seven star" service, switched to Starlink when the maritime version of the service was released in early July, Captain Paul Clarke told Insider.

Musk responded to the Teslarati article on Twitter, saying "cool." The billionaire is the founder of SpaceX, which owns Starlink. The company has more than 2,900 satellites currently in orbit, launched by SpaceX's Falcon 9 rockets.

Starlink Maritime on Loon costs $5,000 a month for consistent speeds, ranging from 150 Megabits per second to 200 Megabits per second, Clarke said. This is a drop in price from the yacht's previous internet service, Viasat, which charged $10,000 a month for speeds of 50 to 80 Megabits per second, Clarke added.

Related stories

"We've thrown everything we can at it, and it hasn't missed a beat," Clarke told Insider.

Clarke told Teslarati that Starlink was a "total game-changer" because every television on the 180-foot yacht is now able to stream in high-definition.

When Loon crossed the Atlantic Ocean, Starlink didn't work, Clarke told Teslarati. He reached out to Starlink's support team, who told him the service is expected to work in that area towards the end of the year, Clarke said in the interview.

Clarke plans to test Starlink when Loon crosses the Atlantic again in May next year, he told Teslarati.

A spokesperson for Loon told Insider the crew onboard the yacht have experienced good internet connection thanks to Starlink, saying their experience was "really positive."

The spokesperson added that Starlink has enabled the yacht's onboard videographer to share content "much more efficiently."

Loon has more than 62,000 followers on Instagram , where it posts scenic pictures of the yacht, crew, food onboard, and activities available during a charter. Clarke told Teslarati the yacht was worth $30 million. Loon can accommodate 12 guests and 14 crew and has an infinity pool, jacuzzi, and open-air bar, according to its website .

As Starlink expands its network, users across the world are reporting the different ways they are deploying Starlink. One user told Insider last week that he took Starlink on a week's sailing vacation to Greece and said the service was "surprisingly good."

Elon Musk Parties on Luxury Yacht in Greece After Twitter Sues Him to Enforce $44 Billion Deal

Elon Musk spent time in Mykonos, Greece one week after filing to back out of purchasing Twitter

Elon Musk is on vacation!

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO, 51, was spotted relaxing on a luxury yacht moored off the coast of Mykonos, Greece, on Sunday.

Keeping things casual in a plain T-shirt and swim shorts, Musk appeared to be kicking back with friends following the termination of his deal to purchase Twitter , for which Twitter is suing him, and a feud with former President Donald Trump.

Musk's new spat with Trump, 76, started during a July 9 political rally in Alaska, when Trump spoke about the billionaire's claim that he'd recently voted for a Republican for the first time, according to The Washington Post .

"He said the other day, 'Oh, I've never voted for a Republican.' I said, 'I didn't know that,'" Trump said at the rally. "He told me he voted for me, so he's another bull— artist."

Musk responded to Trump's criticism via Twitter in a reply to a Breitbart News tweet that shared Trump's comments.

"I don't hate the man, but it's time for Trump to hang up his hat & sail into the sunset," wrote Musk. "Dems should also call off the attack – don't make it so that Trump's only way to survive is to regain the Presidency."

Trump replied on Truth Social that Musk "should focus on getting himself out of the Twitter mess because he could owe $44 billion for something that's perhaps worthless."

In a further post, Trump mulled about why Musk was "allowed to break the $15 million stock purchase barrier on Twitter without any reporting?"

"That is a very serious breach! Have fun Elon and @jack , go to it!" he wrote, bringing Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey into the conversation.

Musk had previously said he would reverse Trump's permanent Twitter ban , a result of the Jan. 6, 2021 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol , if his Twitter deal succeeded.

After Musk filed to terminate his $44 billion deal to purchase Twitter on July 8, the social media company's board said it planned to sue him to make sure the much-anticipated deal finally goes through.

Musk responded to Twitter's plan to force him to acquire the company via lawsuit by tweeting a meme of himself laughing in a series of four photos, with captions that read: "They said I couldn't buy Twitter, Then they wouldn't disclose bot info, Now they want to force me to buy Twitter in court, Now they have to disclose bot info in court."

When Musk filed to terminate the deal, he claimed that Twitter did not provide enough information about the number of fake accounts and bots on the social media platform, and didn't give his team enough data to do their own analysis.

"Sometimes Twitter has ignored Mr. Musk's requests, sometimes it has rejected them for reasons that appear to be unjustified, and sometimes it has claimed to comply while giving Mr. Musk incomplete or unusable information," read the filing.

Twitter launched a lawsuit against Musk on Tuesday to "compel" his completion of the deal. In court documents obtained by PEOPLE, Twitter claimed Musk acted in "bad faith" after reaching a deal to buy the social media platform earlier this year.

"In April 2022, Elon Musk entered into a binding merger agreement with Twitter, promising to use his best efforts to get the deal done," Twitter said in the complaint, filed in the Delaware Court of Chancery. "Now, less than three months later, Musk refuses to honor his obligations to Twitter and its stockholders because the deal he signed no longer serves his personal interests," it continued.

"Having mounted a public spectacle to put Twitter in play, and having proposed and then signed a seller-friendly merger agreement, Musk apparently believes that he — unlike every other party subject to Delaware contract law — is free to change his mind, trash the company, disrupt its operations, destroy stockholder value, and walk away," the company claimed.

Attorneys for Musk haven't responded to PEOPLE's request for comment about the lawsuit.

Elon Musk is involved in a legal battle with Twitter after backing out of the $44 billion takeover of the social media platform. But that isn't stopping him from enjoying a luxury vacation in Greece with his friends. The billionaire also took off his shirt while soaking up the sun on a yacht in Mykonos. Several photos have surfaced on social media which show the Tesla founder splashing around in warm water while sipping drinks. Mr Musk was with a small group that included fashion designer Sarah Staudinger and her husband Ari Emanuel, according to Page Six .

The outlet further said that the friends were enjoying their vacation onboard the yacht which is available for charter for almost $20,000 a week. It can accommodate six guests in its three cabins and a professional crew is available to serve them.

In the photos, Mr Musk is seen in black swimming trunks. The yacht he was on is named 'Zeus'. All the friends are seen smiling while jumping off the back of the boat into the ocean.

The billionaire was sporting aviator sunglasses while looking around on the boat after the swim, more photos from his vacation show.

One of the Twitter users, who posted the photo, said he liked them and added he will put his money "behind this man". Mr Musk reacted to it, replying, "Haha damn, maybe I should take off my shirt more often … free the nip!!  (already back in the factory btw)."

Twitter Inc on Monday accused Mr Musk of trying to "slow walk" the company's lawsuit to hold him to his $44 billion takeover and urged a September trial to ensure deal financing remains in place, according to a court filing.

Twitter has sued Mr Musk and asked a Delaware judge to order him to complete the merger at the agreed price of $54.20 per share.

The company said if the billionaire is ordered to close the deal it could still take months of additional litigation to close the debt financing, which expires in April. For that reason, Twitter asked the judge to reject Mr Musk's proposal to hold the trial in February.

Mr Musk, who is the world's richest person, accused San Francisco-based Twitter of rushing the trial to obscure the truth about spam accounts and to "railroad" him into buying the company.

Tesla Unveils Self-Sustaining Electric Yacht

' src=

Tesla just unveiled the design for its self-sustaining, all-electric Model Y yacht, and it represents just about everything you’d expect from the extremely creative and game-changing company. After all, Tesla has already made head-turning inroads in the automotive market and in outer space, so it seems reasonable that it might venture into the marine sphere with something new as well. (See the video below.)

Elon Musk started making Tesla electric cars in 2008. This week, Tesla’s market cap is $663.85 billion, equal to that of the nine largest car companies in the world – combined. He founded SpaceX in 2002; it became the first private company to send humans into orbit last year, and it launched 143 satellites on a single mission in January – the most ever.

Tesla is not for the faint of heart. And the 131-foot Tesla yacht, called Model Y, seems to fit into the family pattern. It has a Tesla color scheme, for one thing. Then there’s the low, flowing design that sets it apart and is somewhat reminiscent of a spaceship sitting in the water.

For power, the Tesla yacht does not have to pull up to a fuel dock, or even plug into an electric circuit somewhere. The yacht is meant to be fully self-charging; it generates its own power, relying on a hydro-electric system. A turbine on the bottom of the hull charges the batteries that run the yacht. And solar panels on the top charge the batteries when the yacht is not moving.

The yacht has only two decks, with a creative aft cockpit – Tesla’s take on the current beach club trend – that can be opened wide for sunbathing, hopping into the Jacuzzi or enjoying water sports. When the weather turns, you just push a button and a massive shutter comes down to seal it off.

The lower deck is a large social area, with round tables in the center. Push a button and four chairs emerge from the table sides. Private rooms are forward on that deck; one can be a spa; others can be bedrooms. The helm also is on the lower deck.

The upper deck features a “glass room” with glass walls for 360-degree views. It has a sunken bar under foot, and tiny holes in the ceiling to look at the stars. See the video here:

In this moment, everyone here has recently survived the Y2K bug , a hasty corporate merger, but has not yet experienced 9/11, though they are well into the great downward slide of the dot-com bust. Elon Musk is a newlywed, having married Justine Wilson at the start of the year. He is also newly a twice-fired CEO and about to nearly die from malaria. By his own account , Peter Thiel would take over as CEO of PayPal a few days after this photo. So Thiel is smiling because he has just deposed Musk and also has a retirement account with $2,000 invested in it that is, today, worth something like $5 billion that he may enjoy tax-free in 2027. The tech-founder myth is that pale and weak brainiacs found their ambition in computer labs, garages, and arcades. They were visionary enough to build wealth or products with difficult new technology while hirsute Chads played football and inherited car dealerships. Only later, in the flower of wealth and success, would this founder generation discover personal chefs and trainers, nutritionists and gym doctors — only later would they return as megawealthy alphas to dominate the physical and financial universes, shaming the stagnant and impoverished little men all around.

Could you buy a car from this man? No, you could not. For this is an early prototype of a Tesla Roadster, which would not be delivered to customers until 2008, the same year he would leave his first wife. Musk was already savvily using the courts for attention, splashily suing Lockheed and Boeing for monopoly operations to the detriment of his rocket company, SpaceX . A judge noted that Musk had no standing to sue since SpaceX, being but a vision, was not actually a competitor in any sense.

Here is the archetype of a divorced dad — fitter, happier, etc. His jacket is either very expensive or very cheap. He had filed for divorce from Justine Wilson in 2008 ; together they’d had six children, including the son who’d died at just 10 weeks old. After the divorce, he’d text her six weeks later to say he was dating English actress Talulah Riley, who would become his wife two times (so far). Seen here at the premiere of the Knightsbridge Tesla operation, Riley is helping him demonstrate the intense asymmetry of physical-appearance requirements in the heterosexual world. Interestingly, Riley would go on to play a violently revengeful robot, destroying the careless and cruel humans of Westworld in service of a better far-off future. Here, she also exhibits the blondeness that Musk began to increasingly demand of his first wife.

Barack Obama is seen doing one of his dad jokes, clearly, while Musk is caught in a supplicant posture. He is on parade in a brown suit and an actual tie to be a big boy meeting the president. (Obama and Musk are nearly but not quite the same height; Musk is six-one, according to his authorized biography, which also describes him as “thick.”) At this time, SpaceX was campaigning for Obama’s proposed new NASA contracts, what Senator Richard Shelby described then as “a welfare program for the commercial space industry.” As it happens, corporate welfare was one of Obama’s favorite things!

June 29, 2010 TSLA: IPO day

On this day in history, Tesla made its initial public offering. Shares went for $17, and this picture, staged outside the NASDAQ marketing site in midtown, represents a man who can feel all his peacocks fluffing their feathers. The “stock shot up 41 percent in its first day of public trading,” reported Bloomberg. For this moment, he resembles his own idealized customer — wealthy enough to be casual, casual enough to try an experiment of a car, and with enough hair to feel youthful. “These geniuses always get their comeuppance,” former Ford, Chrysler, and GM honcho Bob Lutz said at the time.

But suburban cool bro and business dad aren’t fun looks or lives, and they’re not actually the marketing that Musk is suited for. Rocket man with a stern hairline is a better look, and also it seems to cause Musk actual joy to project an image that speaks of motorcycles, rockets, adventures. Dress for the job you want and you’ll work every day for the rest of your life. New York Times journalist Andrew Ross Sorkin knows it too.

In the summer of 2017, Musk did a big splashy conference to announce the Tesla 3. In November, he again took the stage, updating the Steve Jobs–iness of it all with highly masculine modern-maker turnout gear in keeping with the announcement of the big macho semi-truck looming over him. But this is the height of modern Musk choreographed imagery — through these years of product drops and stock-market gains, he looks clad and puppeteered by pros. Fortunately, he will soon blow this up. Beauty must have power over man. Messaging gets you sales, but chaos gets you everything.

Here in Texas, in a bomber jacket and otherwise extremely masculinized garb for a surprise SXSW talk, Musk preached his global-betterment-through-capitalism gospel. “Life cannot just be about solving one miserable thing after another,” he said. This has not yet worked out, but there’s still time. Fun fact about Musk: With most celebrities, it’s usually possible to identify who makes their clothing. With Musk, it’s harder, though he often wears Belstaff waxed jackets. And when you do search for “who made elon musk’s leather jacket,” you get many shopping results for things like “ELON MUSK WINTER SHEARLING LEATHER JACKET” made by Americasuits–dot-com (now marked down to $189.99). The surprise unveiling of the chemically unstable Grimes-Musk alliance took place at the Met Gala in May 2018. She wore a glass corset that she would come to regret; she would later collaborate to produce about a fifth of his known children. He wore a decently tailored white dinner jacket that creepily-slash-trollily read “Novus Ordo Seclorum” on the back and — is that a boutonniere? Very prom. This appearance, more than his arrival with his model mother at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in 2017, elevated him to the category of actual bona fide celebrity.

Here he is making the driving hands. But, exciting: It’s entirely possible that Musk is here wearing the same coat to the same auto awards event in Berlin in 2019 that he wore there in 2016. This provokes neat questions about the nature of the cosmos and about being extremely rich and extremely organized. Does he have a closet and/or storage space in Berlin? Does he have someone who keeps spreadsheets of what he wore and when? Is there a Musk coat archivist? Or is he just wearing similar coats?

On this day, Elon Musk first began being called the richest man in the world, stepping ahead of Jeff Bezos. And on that day, he did a little dance onstage in Shanghai, announcing the new Tesla Model Y, which would be assembled there. With an onrushing global pandemic, this was a display of what looked, for once, like poor timing. And yet, the Model Y would become the best-selling electric vehicle of 2021.

Elon Musk’s bandanna, which he wears as a punky gaiter and faux mask in places where masking is required, is the symbol of his frustrations with conformity and obstacles. He feels threatened by what he thinks of as crowd-think — a classic trait among male entrepreneurs — and is rarely seen in a mask. Instead, he either has one black traditional bandanna that he wears constantly or he has literally hundreds of identical black bandannas (shades of Karl Lagerfeld’s iPods ) that he wears constantly. This is his display of aggression in the face of being told what to do by people who know better (in this case, as is often the case in his life, actual scientists). Still, we can’t discount the idea that he’s invented a super-aerosol-filtering magic bandanna, although he has said he has had COVID at least twice.

This crew included Jared Isaacman, who is or was a billionaire who privatized pilot training for the American military. Isaacman plans to return to space in December as leader of the Polaris Dawn crew; that mission will test communications with SpaceX’s StarLink satellites. There are at least 3,000 satellites in orbit already, as Musk builds an entire global private-internet structure to serve our descendants after we’re all killed by climate change and also has time to work on his forearms and become the most influential force on the current internet.

And then. This summer, the photo that ignited a million ethical, somatotypical , and even phrenological questions: 61-year-old Ari Emanuel blasting 51-year-old Musk with a hose aboard a yacht . Is it wrong to tease or mock a billionaire? Is body-shaming always cruel, no matter how politically powerful the particular body? Does it matter if the body belongs to fingers that typed the tweet “in case u need to lose a boner fast” with a picture of Bill Gates alongside the pregnant-man emoji? Can a human body this wealthy sustain ethical injury? And: Should all whites be wearing a lot more sunscreen? Yes. For they are all more or less physically equal before the cruel laws of space and radiation, except for the foolish few who will someday regret to escape this burning cinder.

Tesla’s Elon Musk and Amazon’s Jeff Bezos have been vying for the world’s richest person ranking all year after the former’s wealth soared a staggering US$160 billion in 2020, putting him briefly in the top spot .

Musk isn’t alone in seeing a significant increase in wealth during a year of pandemic, recession and death. Altogether, the world’s billionaires saw their wealth surge over $1.9 trillion in 2020, according to Forbes.

Those are astronomical numbers, and it’s hard to get one’s head around them without some context. As anthropologists who study energy and consumer culture, we wanted to examine how all that wealth translated into consumption and the resulting carbon footprint.

Walking in a billionaire’s shoes

We found that billionaires have carbon footprints that can be thousands of times higher than those of average Americans.

The wealthy own yachts, planes and multiple mansions, all of which contribute greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. For example, a superyacht with a permanent crew, helicopter pad, submarines and pools emits about 7,020 tons of CO2 a year, according to our calculations, making it by the far worst asset to own from an environmental standpoint. Transportation and real estate make up the lion’s share of most people’s carbon footprint, so we focused on calculating those categories for each billionaire.

musk yacht photos

To pick a sample of billionaires, we started with the 2020 Forbes List of 2,095 billionaires. A random or representatives sample of billionaire carbon footprints is impossible because most wealthy people shy away from publicity , so we had to focus on those whose consumption is public knowledge. This excluded most of the superrich in Asia and the Middle East .

We combed 82 databases of public records to document billionaires’ houses, vehicles, aircraft and yachts. After an exhaustive search, we started with 20 well-known billionaires whose possessions we were able to ascertain, while trying to include some diversity in gender and geography. We have submitted our paper for peer review but plan to continue adding to our list.

We then used a wide range of sources, such as the U.S. Energy Information Administration and Carbon Footprint , to estimate the annual CO2 emissions of each house, aircraft, vehicle and yacht. In some cases we had to estimate the size of houses from satellite images or photos and the use of private aircraft and yachts by searching the popular press and drawing on other studies . Our results are based on analyzing typical use of each asset given its size and everything else we could learn.

We did not try to calculate each asset’s “ embodied carbon ” emissions – that is, how much CO2 is burned throughout the supply chain in making the product – or the emissions produced by their family, household employees or entourage. We also didn’t include the emissions of companies of which they own part or all, because that would have added another significant degree of complexity. For example, we didn’t calculate the emissions of Tesla or Amazon when calculating Musk’s or Bezos’ footprints.

In other words, these are all likely conservative estimates of how much they emit.

Your carbon footprint

To get a sense of perspective, let’s start with the carbon footprint of the average person.

Residents of the U.S., including billionaires, emitted about 15 tons of CO2 per person in 2018. The global average footprint is smaller, at just about 5 tons per person.

In contrast, the 20 people in our sample contributed an average of about 8,190 tons of CO2 in 2018. But some produced far more greenhouse gases than others.

The jet-setting billionaire

Roman Abramovich, who made most of his $19 billion fortune trading oil and gas, was the biggest polluter on our list. Outside of Russia, he is probably best known as the headline-grabbing owner of London’s Chelsea Football Club.

Roman Abramovich rests his hands on his face as he watches his Chelsea soccer team play.

Abramovich cruises the Mediterranean in his superyacht, named the Eclipse , which at 162.5 meters bow to stern is the second-biggest in the world, rivaling some cruise ships. And he hops the globe on a custom-designed Boeing 767 , which boasts a 30-seat dining room. He takes shorter trips in his Gulfstream G650 jet, one of his two helicopters or the submarine on his yacht.

He maintains homes in many countries, including a mansion in London’s Kensington Park Gardens, a chateau in Cap D’Antibes in France and a 28-hectare estate in St. Barts that once belonged to David Rockefeller . In 2018, he left the U.K. and settled in Israel , where he became a dual citizen and bought a home in 2020 for $64.5 million.

We estimate that he was responsible for at least 33,859 metric tons of CO2 emissions in 2018 – more than two-thirds from his yacht, which is always ready to use at a moment’s notice year-round.

Massive mansions and private jets

Bill Gates, currently the world’s fourth-richest person with $124 billion, is a “modest” polluter – by billionaire standards – and is typical of those who may not own a giant yacht but make up for it with private jets.

musk yacht photos

Co-founder of Microsoft, he retired in 2020 to manage the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the world’s largest charity, with an endowment of $50 billion.

In the 1990s, Gates built Xanadu – named after the vast fictional estate in Orson Welles’ “Citizen Kane” – at a cost of $127 million in Medina, Washington. The giant home covers 6,131 square meters, with a 23-car garage, a 20-person cinema and 24 bathrooms. He also owns at least five other dwellings in Southern California, the San Juan Islands in Washington state, North Salem, New York, and New York City, as well as a horse farm , four private jets, a seaplane and “a collection” of helicopters .

We estimated his annual footprint at 7,493 metric tons of carbon, mostly from a lot of flying.

The environmentally minded tech CEO

South African-born Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla Motors and SpaceX, has a surprisingly low carbon footprint despite being the world’s second-richest person, with $177 billion – and he seems intent on setting an example for other billionaires .

Elon Musk's left and right hands express a thumbs up gesture.

He doesn’t own a superyacht and says he doesn’t even take vacations .

We calculated a relatively modest carbon footprint for him in 2018, thanks to his eight houses and one private jet. This year, his carbon footprint would be even lower because in 2020 he sold all of his houses and promised to divest the rest of his worldly possessions .

While his personal carbon footprint is still hundreds of times higher than that of an average person, he demonstrates that the superrich still have choices to make and can indeed lower their environmental impact if they so choose.

His estimated footprint from the assets we looked at was 2,084 tons in 2018.

The value of naming and shaming

The aim of our ongoing research is to get people to think about the environmental burden of wealth.

While plenty of research has shown that rich countries and wealthy people produce far more than their share of greenhouse gas emissions, these studies can feel abstract and academic, making it harder to change this behavior.

[ Like what you’ve read? Want more? Sign up for The Conversation’s daily newsletter .]

We believe “shaming” – for lack of a better word – superrich people for their energy-intensive spending habits can have an important impact, revealing them as models of overconsumption that people shouldn’t emulate.

Newspapers, cities and local residents made an impact during the California droughts of 2014 and 2015 by “drought shaming” celebrities and others who were wasting water, seen in their continually green lawns . And the Swedes came up with a new term – “ flygskam ” or flying shame – to raise awareness about the climate impact of air travel.

Climate experts say that to have any hope of limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, countries must cut their emissions in half by 2030 and eliminate them by 2050.

Asking average Americans to adopt less carbon-intensive lifestyles to achieve this goal can be galling and ineffective when it would take about 550 of their lifetimes to equal the carbon footprint of the average billionaire on our list.
