Catamaran Something Wonderful

More than a mere catamaran, the astounding Moorings catamaran 5800 is a full-fledged floating holiday resort.

Such an “aha” instant occurred for me. Shortly after taking the wheel of the Moorings 5800 last fall during sea trials on the Chesapeake Bay. From my second-story perch on the vast flybridge of the 58-footer, though the view was expansive, for some reason I’d failed to notice the J/22 we were overtaking when we’d swapped drivers and I’d assumed the helm. But suddenly, the smaller boat was abeam, and its masthead was almost precisely at eye level. It was a strange, even unsettling perspective. READ MORE

Something Wonderful the crewed sailing catamaran based in the Virgin Islands is a Leopard 5800 catamaran that is built by the same company producing the Moorings 5800. These catamarans offer forward cockpits with entrances from both the main deck cabin and the saloon area. Light floods the saloon area bringing the outside in. The fly-bridge is very spacious and the aft cockpit is also offering to cover protection from the sun and possible adverse weather.

The Moorings continues to set standards for crewed catamarans in the Caribbean.

British Virgin Islands: Yacht Charter with The Moorings

We just came back from the ultimate experience with The Moorings. The British Virgin Islands have been on our travel bucket list for many years. From the stunning blue ocean water, to the various islands offering a variety of experiences, there is endless adventure here!

The most popular way to see the British Virgin Islands, also known as the BVI, is by a Yacht Charter. When we received an invitation to do just that with The Moorings we couldn’t say no! Think sun, sand and the ultimate all inclusive experience that’s actually affordable.

In this blog post we are going to be sharing all the information you need to book a Yacht Charter with The Moorings! So let’s get into it.

the moorings bvi catamaran

What To Expect when you Charter a Yacht with The Moorings

The Moorings is one of the leading Yacht Charter providers in the BVI and they have over 20 destinations around the world that they operate out of. So to say the least, you are in good hands!

The Best Group Trip

Looking for an unforgettable holiday with your family and friends? Then you NEED to charter a Yacht with The Moorings. The team truly goes above and beyond to make your getaway special as they tailor the trip to your group. This is the perfect way to celebrate a milestone like a retirement or wedding anniversary, or have the most epic birthday party! The best part is, the more people in your group, the more affordable it is for everyone! So you can invite up to 10 people total and have the ultimate group getaway.

Type of Charters Available

The Moorings offer a few different ways to charter a Yacht. If you or someone in your group has a Captain’s License and want to navigate a destination yourself, you can do that! Want to have just a skipper provided, or have a fully crewed Yacht for an all-inclusive experience, that can happen too! There are many options to make your holiday perfect! If you want to learn more about Skippered Yacht Charters and what that includes, you can read more here .

With the option of a fully crewed Yacht Charter, this means that there is a Captain as well as a Private Chef provided with the Yacht. Meaning you and your group can relax and enjoy the destination without having to worry about navigating the boat, cooking or cleaning. This is the experience that our group had, so this is what we are going to chat about in this blog post today.

Inclusions With A Crewed Charter

The Moorings team truly provides a 5 star experience when it comes to a fully crewed yacht charter. Leading up to the trip our entire group was sent a survey which included some simple questions about preferences for food we like, dietary restrictions, meal sizes we prefer as well as the type of beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) we would like to have on the yacht.

Each day we were served breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as a variety of appetizers in the afternoon. Snacks were also included on the boat to have at any time.

Each Yacht has a slightly different layout, but each bedroom comes with a comfortable bed and an ensuite bathroom for a home away from home feel during your vacation.

If you enjoy water-sports, then you will definitely enjoy having unlimited use of Paddle boards, Kayaks and Snorkeling Fins on board! The BVI is known for its beautiful blue water, so you will be sure to get a lot of use out of all of these.

Yacht Types Available

The Moorings offers a variety of Yachts to choose from, but we are going to speak about the options for crewed charters in this blog post today!

The crewed yachts offered are either power yachts or sailing yachts. They can hold a variety of group sizes from 2 people all the way up to 10, so you will need to cater your Yacht choice to your group size!

If you would like to read more about each individual Yacht available for crewed charters, y ou can do that here!

Our Experience With The Moorings

the moorings bvi catamaran

The experience starts when you begin the trip planning process with The Moorings team. Everyone we spoke with was friendly and eager to make this trip perfect for our group. They sent us the pre-departure surveys, general information about the yacht we would be on, and answered any questions that we had regarding our upcoming trip.

We spent 5 days on the luxurious Moorings 5800 Crewed Yacht! This Yacht has two above deck cabins and 3 below deck cabins perfect for groups of up to 10 people. There is a large dining area inside with a fully stocked kitchen. There is an outside dining area at the back of the yacht as well, where we spent almost every meal! Our yacht had two big nets at the front to enjoy the Caribbean sunrise and sunsets. We also spent a lot of time on the top deck where there was another lounge area that gave us a stunning 360 view of our surroundings!

From the moment we arrived on the Yacht, Captain Seymour and Chef Vicki made our group feel welcome. We were excited to depart on this 5 day adventure sailing through the BVI. We did an initial safety briefing, and the Captain showed us around all of the areas of the boat. We then discussed the best plan of action for our itinerary. This was based on the weather and the destinations our group was eager to see.

Throughout the entirety of the trip, our Captain continuously checked in with us to give us updates on our itinerary based on weather. His top priority is safety so he made sure we got to see almost everything we wanted to in the safest way possible. Some highlights for us were the world famous Baths, Saba Rock and the Soggy Dollar!

Chef Vicki ensured that we were well fed for every meal. She truly went above and beyond to make our experience special by catering our meals to our group. She even prepared a birthday cake for a member of our group and stocked on late night snacks like cookies and chips! Chef Vicki also provided turn down service for our rooms each day which is greatly appreciated when you are on vacation.

What Our Days looked Like

Waking up in the morning to views of the Ocean from our cabin was truly the best way to start the day. Some days we even woke up and dove right into the water before breakfast! We also really enjoyed starting our morning with coffee on the top deck of the boat to really take in the beauty of the BVI!

the moorings bvi catamaran

Every stop that we made was so unique. You could truly spend weeks exploring the BVI and still not see everything. However, our group was determined to see as much as we could. So we typically started our mornings quite early to be able to get to our first destination of the day. We definitely recommend adding the Baths and Caves to your BVI itinerary, this place is absolutely spectacular. Another stop was at The Soggy Dollar for a famous Painkiller! However our Captain made us his version, and controversial opinion, we all liked his more HA! However, it is still worth the stop for the incredible beach and to experience this famous spot.

the moorings bvi catamaran

With the water being so blue everywhere we went, we made sure to pull out the paddle boards and kayaks as much as we could! The Moorings team also provides everyone on the boat with flippers for snorkeling, so make sure to pack your mask with you. We saw so many fish at every stop we made, and sea turtles too!

If we were in need of relaxation we made our way to the front nets or the top deck where Chef Vicki or Captain served up some excellent drinks.

The Moorings Has New Yachts in the British Virgin Islands

The Moorings, the Caribbean’s top yacht charter company, has announced a big expansion at its base in Tortola, British Virgin Islands this year.

The Moorings and sister company Sunsail have added 78 new yachts, including 19 new monohulls, 35 new sailing catamarans and 24 new power catamarans to the BVI fleet.

The new yachts have a combined value of $70 million.

“As a business we have invested heavily in our BVI operation,” says Josie Tucci, VP of Sales & Marketing for The Moorings and Sunsail. “As the largest charter operator in the world’s most popular charter destination, we take great care to ensure a welcoming experience for our guests, and have gone to great lengths to maximize the guest experience through our marina revitalization project, and new fleet replenishment. Ultimately our aim is to provide an unparalleled customer experience to the many thousands of visitors we welcome each year.”

The British Virgin Islands’ charter industry is in the midst of a full-blown renaissance, with double-digit growth annually.

It’s another great sign for a destination that has long been considered the sailing capital of the Caribbean.

“Ultimately, with demand for charter vacations in the islands soaring, The Moorings & Sunsail remain primed to help usher this demand into a successful 2024 and beyond for the territory,” The Moorings said in a statement.

Charter boat in the British Virgin Islands

The Moorings and its sister company, Sunsail, are powerhouses of the charter industry. Their bareboat and crewed offerings can be found all around the world, including the Americas, Caribbean, Mediterranean and more exotic locales such as the Seychelles, Tahiti, and Thailand.

In the British Virgin Islands—long the most popular destination for bareboating—the company now has 19 new monohulls, 35 new sailing catamarans and 24 new powercats as part of its fleet. These 78 yachts reportedly have a combined value of $70 million, and bring the two brands’ combined number of boats to 254.

The company, in a press release, called the additions to the BVI fleet “a welcome influx of inventory in time for peak sailing season in the Caribbean and another step in the continuous renewal of the sister companies’ fleets.”

Also in response to increased demand, The Moorings and Sunsail have stepped up their hiring process. They’re already one of the largest employers in the Virgin Islands, with a workforce of 300 employees.

“As a business, we have invested heavily in our BVI operation,” Josie Tucci, vice president of sales and marketing for The Moorings and Sunsail, stated in a press release. “As the largest charter operator in the world’s most popular charter destination, we take great care to ensure a welcoming experience for our guests, and have gone to great lengths to maximize the guest experience through our marina revitalization project, and new fleet replenishment. Ultimately, our aim is to provide an unparalleled customer experience to the many thousands of visitors we welcome each year.”

According to the company, charter business in the British Virgin Islands has been experiencing annual double-digit growth. There are new direct flights to the islands out of Miami, landing at Tortola, with all expectations for another strong year in 2024.

The Moorings also has a base at St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands, with itineraries that explore around that island as well as St. John and St. Croix. Much like the British Virgin Islands, the U.S. Virgin Islands is a destination that’s well-suited for first-time charterers as well as returning veterans. As The Moorings says, “The smooth cruising conditions, combined with the sensational views, countless islands to explore, and laid-back island living make St Thomas one of the best destinations in the world to visit on a sailing vacation.”

Charter Base Details

  • The Moorings

The Moorings BVI base in Road Town probably sees more charter guests in a year than nearly any other base. For the most part they do a good job and have everything you could need.

There is a small grocery store, a couple of restaurants, nice shower facilities, a pool, a SCUBA outpost, and some nice gift stores.

Everything is marked up considerably and the service is typically pretty slow.

Once you are here, you're in the BVI and about to go on an amazing charter. Things could certainly be worse!!

Terms and conditions, charter experts, llc terms & conditions.

PLEASE READ THESE TERMS AND CONDITIONS (“ Terms ”) CAREFULLY AS THEY CONTAIN IMPORTANT INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS, REMEDIES AND OBLIGATIONS AS WELL AS A SECTION GOVERNING THE JURISDICTION AND VENUE OF DISPUTES. THESE TERMS ALSO CONTAIN A LEGALLY BINDING RELEASE, WAIVER OF LIABILITY, AND ASSUMPTION OF RISK. By creating a username, a login, clicking submit, using the services of Charter Experts, LLC d/b/a Virgin Island Sailing® (“ Broker ) or by accessing Broker’s website, you agree that you have read, and acknowledge your acceptance of these Terms. The Terms are subject to change at any time without notice at Broker’s sole discretion. Additionally, any transaction for which you have made payment shall be governed by the form of Terms in effect at the time of such payment notwithstanding any subsequent changes hereto.

If you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring a Charter (as that term is defined in Section 1 below) for more than just yourself, all references below to “Charterer” or “you” (and derivations thereof) shall be read to mean you on behalf of yourself and each individual within your group for whom you are obtaining a quote, information, booking travel for and/or securing or procuring Charter.

These Terms shall be read together and construed, to the fullest extent possible, to be in concert with any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer. To the extent they cannot be so construed, then in the event of any direct conflict between these Terms and any other agreement by or among Broker and Charterer (including but not limited to the agreement executed by Charterer for a Charter Reservation (as that term is defined in Section 1 below), these Terms shall prevail.

  • Prepaid Charter Reservations . Typically, Broker negotiates charter rates in advance with the yacht owner or charter company (“ Charter Provider ”) to obtain cost-effective rates, and facilitate reservations and availability for yacht charters, excursions and travel (the “ Charter ”). Broker also provides services to you by facilitating the booking of reservations for consideration and receives a commission from the Charter Provider (the “ Broker Fee ”). The Broker Fee is included in the pre-negotiated Charter rate provided to you, plus taxes and other fees where applicable. You agree that your payment is for the total amount set forth in the applicable Charter agreement (which Charter Provider may refer to as a Charter Contract, Charter Agreement, Booking Terms & Conditions, Instructions and Terms for Accommodations, as well as other derivations) provided to you by Broker (“ Charter Agreement ”). Upon execution of the Charter Agreement and receipt of the applicable deposit, you will have made a reservation for the Charter that authorizes Broker to facilitate the Charter on your behalf (“Charter Reservation”), including making payment arrangements with the Charter Provider. You further agree that Broker is a third-party beneficiary to the Charter Agreement and shall have the right to enforce such agreement to the extent it deems such enforcement necessary or advisable to protect its rights hereunder or under the Charter Agreement.

Broker retains the Broker Fee as compensation in arranging your Charter Reservation. The Broker Fee varies based on the amount and type of Charter and/or services provided by Broker.  By making a Charter Reservation, you accept and agree to the relevant cancellation and no-show policy of the Charter Provider set forth in the Charter Agreement. Cancellation and no-show policies vary for each Charter. Carefully read the Charter Agreement and additional information provided to you by Broker. It is expressly agreed by Charterer that the Broker Fee is earned at the time the Charter Reservation is made. Late payment, wrong credit card or debit card details, invalid credit or debit cards, or insufficient funds are for your own risk and account, and you will not be entitled to any refund of any prepaid amount unless the Charter Provider expressly agrees otherwise under the Charter Agreement or in some other signed writing.

  • Charter Rules and Restrictions . Additional terms and agreements will apply to your Charter Reservation and any purchase or rental of equipment or other items, supplies, provisions and travel you may select. Please read those additional terms carefully. In particular, if you have purchased airfare, please ensure that you read the full terms and conditions of carriage issued by the supplier. You agree to abide by the terms of purchase imposed by any supplier with whom you elect to deal, including but not limited to payment of all amounts when due and compliance with the supplier’s rules and restrictions regarding availability, charges, fares, and use of products and services.
  • Payment . All payments must be made by personal check, bank/wire transfer, ACH payment and/or with a major credit card unless otherwise expressly stated. The total price for the Charter Reservation will be billed in U.S. Dollars unless otherwise stated. Some banks and credit card companies impose fees for international transactions. If you are making a reservation from outside of the United States on a US credit card, your bank may convert the payment amount to your local currency and charge you a conversion fee. This means the amount listed on your credit or bank card statement may be in your local currency and therefore a different figure than the amount provided by Broker for the Charter Reservation. In addition, a foreign transaction fee may be assessed if the financial institution that issued your credit card is located outside of the United States. Booking international travel may be considered to be an international transaction by the financial institution or card company. The currency exchange rate and foreign transaction fee is determined solely by your financial institution on the day that it processes the transaction. If you have any questions about these fees or the exchange rate applied to your booking, please contact your financial institution. Broker shall not be liable to you for any such service, conversion, or exchange fee.

Broker expressly reserves the right to cancel your Charter Reservation if full payment is not timely received as set forth in the Charter Agreement.

  • Cancellation and Rescheduling . You may cancel or change your Charter Reservation as set forth in the Charter Agreement by and among you, the Charter Provider and/or Broker. Please note that some Charter Providers do not permit changes to or cancellation of reservations after they are made, or after a certain date, as indicated in the Charter Agreement. You agree to abide by the terms of the Charter Agreement with respect to your Charter Reservation. Broker will not be responsible for reimbursing Charterer for any previously tendered deposits or payments by Charterer and disclaims all liability for the failure of a Charter Provider to refund or return any such funds.
  • Credit Card Transactions and Chargebacks . If for any reason, any Charter Provider is unable to provide the Charter, or any part thereof, for which you have contracted, your remedy lies against the Charter Provider, and not against Broker. However, Broker will use reasonable efforts to assist you and Charter Provider in reaching a resolution to a dispute between you and the Charter Provider. In the event that your payment has already been transferred from Broker to Charter Provider or to an escrow account, you agree that you will not seek a chargeback against Broker for such amounts transferred. You further agree to indemnify and hold Broker harmless from and against any liability, loss, damage or expense (including without limitation, reasonable attorneys’ fees) that Broker may incur in connection with chargebacks against Broker or under the Charter Agreement and your performance thereunder. If Broker incurs any costs, including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, to recover any payments charged back by your credit card company or other financial institution, you agree that you will be liable for these costs. If your payment is declined for any reason, you agree to settle any amounts owed to Broker via money order, cashier’s check, personal check or bank/ACH transfer immediately.
  • Broker Responsibility . Broker makes arrangements with the Charter Provider. Broker additionally makes additional arrangements with other suppliers for the various components and other services that comprise your Charter (“Charter Suppliers”). Broker is not an agent of these Charter Providers or the Charter Suppliers (and the Charter Providers and Charter Suppliers are not agents of Broker). Broker expressly disclaims any liability for the actions or omissions of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. The Charter Providers and the Charter Suppliers reserve the right to refuse service to you at their sole discretion. Broker assumes no liability for the acts of the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers in refusing service. Broker is not responsible for schedule changes and does not offer compensation for those changes. Broker is not responsible under any circumstances for any injury or damages you may suffer, in connection with sea, air or ground transportation, hotel accommodations, or other travel or excursion services arranged by Broker.

You understand Broker is not the source or supplier of the Charter or other travel services you requested and acts solely as a broker for the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers. You agree that the Charter Provider and Charter Suppliers whose names appear in the information supplied to you are those who are solely responsible for providing the Charter you purchase. You consent to and request the use of the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers and agree to not hold Broker responsible should any of them: (i) fail to provide the Charter or travel services you purchased, whether or not such services are listed in the Charter Agreement or otherwise, (ii) fail to comply with any applicable law, or (iii) engage in any negligent act or omission that causes you any sort of injury, damage, delay or inconvenience.

By using Broker’s services, you waive and release any claim against Broker, its affiliated and subsidiary companies, and their respective officers, directors, employees, contractors, and agents, arising out of or in connection with any loss of or damage to property or injury to any person caused by reason of (i) any defect, negligence, or other wrongful act or omission, or any failure of performance of any kind, by any Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, or any other provider of sea, airline, hotel, ground transportation or any other travel provider connected to or otherwise associated with the Charter, (ii) any claim for inconvenience, loss of enjoyment, mental distress or other similar claim, (iii) any delayed departure, missed connection, substitute accommodation, termination of service or change in fares or rates, and (iv) overbooking, flight or other travel cancellation, lost or misconnected personal property, or any claim arising out of the air transportation portion of your travel, and (v) or any other claim arising out of or otherwise related to the Charter Agreement or services provided by the Charter Provider and the Charter Suppliers.

Excepting only liability that directly arises from the gross negligence or willful misconduct of Broker, you will not hold Broker responsible for any injury, damage or loss you may suffer while on a Charter, whether incurred on the Charter or in connection with any other rental, purchase, excursion or activity, regardless of the relationship of any of the foregoing with the Charter Provider or the Charter Suppliers.

  • Your Responsibility . By booking a Charter with Broker, you agree to defend and indemnify and hold harmless Broker, Charter Provider, Charter Suppliers, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees and agents, from and against any and all claims, causes of action, demands, recoveries, losses, damages, fines, penalties or other costs or expenses of any kind or nature, including but not limited to reasonable legal fees, arising out of or in connection with: (i) your breach of these Terms or the documents referenced herein; (ii) your violation of any law or rights of a third party; or (iii) your use of the Broker website.

You will review your Charter Agreement and travel documents for accuracy upon receipt. You understand that it is your responsibility to review the accuracy of all details in the Charter Reservation provided to you, and that you may contact Broker if you have any questions.

You assume full and complete responsibility for checking and verifying any and all passport, visa, vaccination, or other entry requirements of your destination(s), and all conditions regarding health, safety, security, political stability, and labor or civil unrest at such destination(s).

If we could give a zero, we would. We just finished a trip in BVI with Moorings. On the Aloha, boat was not clean, smelled horrible, duct tape hanging from the ceiling in the saloon, beeping going off the entire trip from the electrical panel in the saloon, first night the batterys wouldn't charge so captain had to run the motor ALL night. Miserable. Our early check-in that we paid 1200.00 for never happened as they were still desperately searching for a captain. One finally came and once to the boat our provisions weren't there. It was a hot mess. Leslie, one of the managers said she would refund our 1200.00 "immediately ", it's been 4 weeks, no refund and they are ditching our calls and emails. I can go on but you get the jist. Never again Mooring!

we chartered a 42 foot catamaran from the sunsail/moorings base in Placencia, Belize in December 2022. They seem to be one company now. I had an excellent experience and want to leave a five star review. The staff were courteous, and the pre-departure briefing was thorough. The boat was clean inside and there was no marine growth on the bottom. Every engine on the boat to include the two main engines, the generator, and the outboard all started on the first try and ran well. There is an electric windlass for the anchor and an electric winch to raise and sheet in the main sail both of which worked. A color chart plotter with all the anchorages clearly marked made navigation easy. There was a guidebook with sketch charts of all the anchorages and sailing directions to get in. All the interior lights worked and the mast head light made finding a way back to the boat in the dinghy at night easy. The dinghy easily accommodated six adults and was in excellent condition. There was a book on board with the price for any loss or damage to every piece of equipment on the boat. We broke a boat hook and were charged the listed price which I think was fair. Sailing conditions were warm weather with winds ranging from 10 to 22 mph. The boat performed well as both the main and jib were self tacking. This feature made sailing up wind easy. You are only allowed to sail inside the reef so the seas were flat and made for delightful sailing. While the main had 2 reef points and the jib was roller reefing, we did not need to reef the sails in these conditions. We only used the air conditioning for part of one night when we got rained on and had to close all the hatches. Anchoring can be tricky with lots of seagrass and coral heads, but a lot of anchorages have mooring balls and it's easy to tie up to mooring instead of using your own anchor. We had a boat with a 12 volt water maker and were disappointed with its low output of only 10 gallons per hour. The boat had 300 Lliters of water storage and we ran out on the last night. All the other boats have a 110 volt water makers and I recommend you make sure to get one of those. We had all kinds of fun experiences and met lots of friendly locals. We never once felt threatened by any type of crime. I thought Sunsail/the moorings was an excellent company I had a great experience. I recommend a bareboat charter in Belize to anyone.

The Moorings promotes an unforgettable experience when chartering one of their vessels. That is exactly what we had, an unforgettable nightmare experience. In short, we chartered a 10 day trip in the Bahamas Exuma islands with a 43 ft. Leopard power catamaran. When boarding our vessel, we discovered the A/C on the starboard side was not working, there was no 12 volt power on the port side, the VHF microphone was missing, there was water in the port side bilge, the holding tanks had broken handles, so they didn't function properly, and the water maker was not working. Day 1 was spent at the dock waiting for repairs at a cost of $1100.00. Only the A/C and 12 volt problem were fixed. On Day 2 we left the Nassau home base and went to Highborne Cay and anchored for the night. The next morning, we went to pull anchor and discovered the windless was not working. We had to call for base help, waited all day on board and got it late in the day. We stayed at the island overnight and the next morning went to lower the dinghy and the elevator line broke. We were stranded on the boat for the second day. Again, we called base for help and got it late in the day. On day 4 we went to pull anchor and discovered the hook on the chain that attaches to the bridal had come off and lost in the water. Consequently, we had no bridal when anchoring which made that uncomfortable, lots of swinging and chain rubbing against the hull. The first time we got fuel we discovered the winch handle was broken making it difficult to open the fuel caps. There were other minor problems with the vessel like the arm in the shower would not go up, loose and floppy isinglass and no deck lights at night. Sadly, all these issues reflect poor maintenance at the base. Our first 4 days were nothing but problems and the rest of our trip had to be altered because of those issues. This was especially painful because the dates of trip were to celebrate our 10-year wedding anniversary. So, my advice is Charterer Beware....it may cost you thousands of dollars for an unforgettable miserable experience.

This a review of the planning, not the charter itself which is a bit over two weeks from now. I just wanted to thanks the trip planners both at the charter desk and the flights desk. Gina and Soun have been incredibly responsive to our needs as things have changed. We, too, had to cancel a trip in 2020. We let the deposit go. But, when we set about re-organizing in 2023, the company honored the deposit from 2020 for this year's trip. The flight desk was incredibly helpful making all the arrangements. I'll let you know about the actual charter. But the people in the planning stage really need to be recognized for how good they are.

May 2023 Had an amazing week in the BVI on a Moorings 50 foot catamaran captained by Sam Crone. I have sailed numerous times; however, never has the captain executed absolutely all the sailing duties, made dinner reservations, arranged transportation, cleaned daily, provided wealth of information and in general, was a highly competent concierge for everything and anything. It truly was an amazing trip thanks to our fabulous captain and makes all the difference. The Moorings Marina staff in the BVI was also delightful to deal with Lindsay with the charter, Judith in the new provisioning store and Eric, managing our luggage. Thank you Moorings for an unforgettable vacation!

We rented a charter in Nassau to explore the Exumas - our boat's battery died (had to pull the anchor chain up by hand and pull sails up by hand), one of the boats we had only had one propeller and another couldn't make water. THEN when we finally limped into the marina they turned around and rented those same boats the same day to another family. Oh and one radio did not work unless you were about 100 yards from another boat. Extremely dangerous.

10 days at the BVI Moorings, stayed 2 nights at the base hotel, everything you need waiting on your boat! and that's where the problems are evident after the "check in procedures " no sense of urgency to get you out on the water. Cleaning, mechanicals, fueling, provisioning, water toys all done on the same day and it's very obvious that's not done very well with all the good intentions from most of the ground crew, not all. The best part is you can't know the name of your Boat, I wonder why....! If something is wrong you wait with no explanation or communication and the clock is ticking, on a $14000 charter still on dry ground . Finally we got on board, safety briefing, the boat stinks like urine, cleaning is mediocre and no provisioning (late), the boat is well used, banged up all around , cracked counters, duck tape holding panels, splatter sticky liquid on the galley ceiling, snaps missing from the deck cushions, windows that don't stay closed and broken latches, busted dinghy engine, nothing like portrayed in the fancy advertisements and the immaculate new boats. Everyone around must not be in a hurry to get you out, telling us to check for everything that they might have missed, and the clock is ticking trying to figure out if we have enough daylight remaining to get to our first destination. But don't you dare to miss the return time precisely, it's evident that their time is important but not ours. In conclusion we made it happen and had a very good time but it wasn't our job to provide us with decent equipment that cost us $14000 for 7 days of bare bone charters. It's interesting that they try to get you interested in yacht ownership (and we were interested in that possibility) after all we were using somebody else's yacht, if that is how they take care of a boat that was in-trusted to them we don't want to have no part of that! Just poorly run operation, most of the people on the ground are wonderful and full of good intentions, it's the company management that's responsible for this mess and company procedures!

We had a horrible experience with the Moorings in Abacos this year. So bad, that it has taken me a few months to be able to even write about it. We planned a bare boat charter with them about a year ago for our extended family. We chartered a large 50' catamaran, quite expensive, but we had a large crew to carry. We had family members from all over the country going to fly in and meet in Abacos to spend a week together sailing around the island. We were flying out on a Friday, embarking on Saturday. On Wednesday, we received an email from Moorings saying that the 50' cat we had reserved was unavailable. We were told specifically that it had sustained multiple damages that could not be repaired by the base in time for our charter. They located the only other boat around, from another organization, and they offered to reserve it for us. This was just a 3 cabin and could not accommodate all of us. So 3 days before our charter, 2 days before our flights, the Moorings notifies us that our boat is not available, and our only recourse is to eject several members of our family and take a smaller boat ? How horrible is that ? In the end, we didn't have to decide because a number of our flights got cancelled at the last minute and there was no way to even get to the island. But that's another story. It does get worse, though, because when a few remaining family members were able to get to the island, they did accept the other boat. While waiting in the Marina, they saw no 50' Moorings catamaran anywhere, and when asking various staff members in the marina about it, including the harbormaster, they were told repeatedly that no 50' catamaran had ever been seen there. So, I cannot guess what really happened on the Moorings side, but we were left with the impression that we chartered a boat that did not exist, and the Moorings waited until 3 days before our charter to tell us there was no boat, and when they did tell us, they were dishonest about it and said that it was damaged and under repair at the base. Accidents happen, I accept, but this was not an accident. They had to have known long before this that they would not have a boat for us, but they didn't bother to tell us until the last minute. This was such a horrible, and costly experience, that the family will probably never try a sailing trip together again. And we certainly will never be using the Moorings. Accidents can be forgiven, but being dishonest and uncaring for your customers will be long remembered. The Moorings may be the largest, but they are not the only.

I would absolutely not recommend this company. My husband and I booked a trip in March 2020 for Jan 2021. We asked if a full refund would be provided if the trip had to be cancelled due to COVID so long as we cancelled 3 months in advance. We attempted to cancel the trip 4 months in advance when flights from the US to BVI were no longer running and we told the person that promised the refund was no longer working there and that Mooring Charter company would be keeping our $400 deposit if we chose to cancel. Customer service was deplorable. I would recommend anyone who enjoys sailing find a different company.

Overall 4.5 stars. 2/6/16-2/12/16: This review is for the Moorings 4600 (46 ft. yacht) yacht trip with Captain Stevan & Gourmet Chef Zee. This was our first chartered yacht trip (with our own personal gourmet chef!) sailing the British Virgin Islands (BVI) where we were either docked or anchored overnight: starting at Tortola (docked) and going through Peter Island (anchored), Deadman's Bay, Cooper Island (anchored), Virgin Gorda (experiencing The Baths) (docked), Jost Van Dyke at Cam Bay & White Bay (anchored), Sandy Spit, The Bubbly Pools, & Soggy Dollar, and then back to Tortola (docked). Words, pics and even videos don't do this experience justice, the places we got to see and things we got to do on this trip are indescribable! I can't be as wordy as I want to because I know I'll run out of space. Loved all the stops. Each captain will kind of cater to the guests of where you wanna go. We were big on snorkeling, peace & tranquility and didn't care about bars or touristy stuff. We wanted great pictures and once-in-a-lifetime experiences, which we got. My fave highlights were snorkeling by private islands (fave was Sandy Spit), the Virgin Gorda Baths, walking thru mangroves to the Bubbly Pools and more. I loved swimming at sunset in an ocean ALL TO MYSELF! Just the sunset, my honey and nothing else. lol I just re-read that last sentence and it sounds like we were skinny dipping. We weren't. All the food was lovingly prepared by our amazing Chef Zee. She knew we primarily preferred vegan food and damn, she hit it out of the ball park. We only ate chicken one night and fish a couple, and everything was so delicious. I didn't realize how much work it entails for my hubby cooking all of our meals at home until I saw Zee in the kitchen 24/7. Hubby said "yup, that's my life" so he really enjoyed not doing anything for a week! Hubby loved how Cpt. Steve let him drive and sail the yacht and did the sails, etc. A very cool experience for him. As luxurious as this trip sounds, it isn't. The accomodations are teeny tiny cabins and not fancy at all. It's like camping at sea. If you're used to 5 star all-inclusive resorts (these are the trips I normally pick when I win them), then it takes getting used to (not to sound spoiled or anything lol). The 5 star rating is for the food and the experience; one that you can't get at a land resort or big cruise ship. Seriously, hubby and I walked around on a deserted private island. What brought their rating down are the logistics of Moorings. Like the other reviewer said, we had water pump issues too, so departed later. Then Zee had immigration issues (not her fault), that needed to be taken care of on our first full day of the trip, Steve told us he was going to drop us off at an island to have lunch while they tended to that. We felt Moorings should have all that taken care of before taking guests on the sailing. Plus, all meals are supposed to be included. We weren't happy paying $40 for one $hitty burger & fries. Moorings should've paid for that (or Steve should've offered to have Zee pack a picnic lunch, which we would've preferred her cooking any day). Then on the overnight to Virgin Gorda, the next morning, Steve went surfing (which is cool, we don't expect them to work 24/7). But, he should've made sure all errands were taken care of. So he was doing errands later in the morning. We left the dock late and everyone was not happy about that cuz we lost that whole day. Don't get me wrong, he was a good cpt., got us there safely, very nice, but I think Moorings needs to uniformly train all of them to remember that this isn't their vacation, and it ain't cheap. For that week, the going rate of that trip for the whole yacht (each yacht holds 6 passengers)- are you sitting down- $16,500 (not counting airfare). Now, if I paid that I would be pissed and rate them lower b/c throughout the week we lost a good full 1+ day on an already short trip. And focus on the guests more: ex: we were all waiting to be dinghy'd to snorkel but he was doing dishes. If it were me, I'd stop, tend to my guests, then go back to errands. Thank goodness this was free (well, I pay the taxes, which will still be alot) and when we were at our stops, they were fun! This is how I know I loved the trip. You know my nickname is Princess Money, so I don't like to waste it! So despite these hiccups, because of what we were able to do on the trip and the experience of living through that, this will be a memorable trip of our lifetime. I debated on giving 5 stars b/c it was truly amazing. But at that price, Moorings needs to get their act together for future sailings. Oh and there were times the water stopped working too. Overall, I loved the experience and the food. But in terms of where I sleep, I'm a 5 star resort gal. Unless I'm paying for the trip, then hubby & I do our cruises in an interior cabin lol. Princess Money is wise with the cash!
