X40 test: A reminder of how good a sub-40ft yacht
can feel

Graham Snook

Light winds don’t usually make for fast or enjoyable
boat tests, but most boats tested aren’t like X-Yachts’ new X40. Graham Snook heads to Denmark to put her through her paces

X40

The new yacht in X-Yacht’s XRange
is not a 40-footer. Let’s get that out
of the way now – the X40 is 37ft 8in.

She’s
great fun, and has the nimble feel
and speed that most 40-footers can only dream of, but don’t think she has the accommodation of a 40ft yacht; the
40 in her name is her length overall, including her bowsprit.

Her interior is stylish, practical
and well put together, she’s easily handled by a couple
and can take you cruising in speed and style.

With that clarified, I can start telling you all how good
she is and, oh my, she is good. It’s rare I’ll find myself having
a great sail in less than 10 knots of breeze.

X40

A soft chine in the aft sections helps makes the hull more powerful. Credit: Graham Snook

To be fair it’s also rare to sail a 40ft, sorry, 38ft, yacht with Technora sails and
a carbon fibre mast and boom and a 2.40m draught.

But
sailing south from Aarøsund in Denmark in 9 knots of
breeze, we were having a blast and she was romping
along going to windward at over 7 knots.

X-Yachts has long been a brand of proper sailing boats, thoroughbreds born to be sailed, not just comfortable yachts with masts and sails.

Its boats are well-mannered and sail fast; with its heritage in racing, even X-Yachts’ cruising range has a
good turn of speed.

X-Yachts currently build three ranges of yachts; Xc for cruising, Xp for performance, and the latest XRange.

The boats in each may be similar lengths, but each are different from the keel up. The new X40
is not just the comfortable interior of the Xc38 crammed into the sleek hull of the Xp38.

The hull design characteristics on all three ranges are different: the Xc hulls have more volume to support the extra clobber required by the extended cruising sailor; the Xp are narrower with much slimmer bow sections; and the X40’s hull has more rocker than the Xp while its broader forward sections give more space for the owner’s cabin and wider aft sections with a soft, subtle
chine, giving more volume aft.

While X’s Xp yachts have gained a more cruiser-friendly interior over time, they retain weight-saving features, less joinery (although, don’t for a minute think they are stripped out racers) and a carbon-reinforced subframe.

The XRange, in contrast, carries over some of the Xp’s sporty handling
while keeping features reassuring to cruising
sailors: lots of useful deck stowage, good headroom and a galvanised steel sub-frame beneath the sole
which spreads the loads from the keel and mast.

With the average size of yachts gradually increasing to over 40ft, it is easy to become accustomed to their way of sailing.

There’s
nothing wrong with the feel but, like the freedom
of an empty winding road after being stuck behind a tractor, sailing the X40 is a reminder of how good a sub-40ft yacht
can feel.

She strikes a lovely balance of nimbleness and control without being twitchy. Leave the wheel and she will veer off course, but the helm is so enjoyable you won’t want to leave it.

The test boat was fitted with a B&G hydraulic autopilot ram. In the past, when manufacturers have blamed the autopilot for heaviness to the helm,

I’ve asked for it to be removed – and the autopilot wasn’t always the cause.

On this occasion, without the ram fitted the wheel had the unrestricted preciseness I have come to expect from Jeffa cable steering, and it felt instantly lighter.

THE TEST VERDICT

There is no doubt that X40 is one of my favourite production boats; everything about her just seems right.

Of course, for a boat of this quality you pay handsomely for it and this boat did have more than £100,000 of extras added.

Galley on X40

No doubt these improved her performance, and it would have been nice to see how good she was without the carbon rig and with her standard 2.1m draught keel.

As she was, though, not many boats of her length can rival her, given the comfort and build quality that’s down below and, of course, the speed you’ll be sailing.

READ THE FULL TEST IN THE OCTOBER 2019 ISSUE. GET IT HERE

This two-cabin layout worked well and provided plenty of stowage.

A three-cabin layout will be available, but you’ll lose the chart table and much of the spacious heads compartment; given it’s the only heads on board, it is a compromise you’d want to weigh up carefully.

The three-cabin layout works better on the larger X43 where less compromise is needed.

Boats to rival her are few and far between, though
she sits between the more expensive Faurby 396
and the Arcona 380.

While all three of these boats sail well it would be unfair to just look at the bottom line as each yacht has her own merits.

Which would I choose? That is a very tough decision and one I am loath to commit to with so few words to pontificate with.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

At 38ft, the X40 squeezes in under the 12m mark, meaning that sails, loads, berthing and costs are all kept within bounds.

The size of the yacht and her sails feel less intimidating than those on a yacht above 40ft.

If you’ve enjoyed racing in the past and still feel the need for speed, but now want a little more comfort – and you have the funds available – this boat is a good choice.

Cockpit of the X40

The cockpit is long with supportive coamings. Genoa winches are optional. Credit: Graham Snook

She’s a high-spec cruiser that is hugely rewarding and fun to helm, with a very comfortable, stylish interior.

It’s very rare for me to give gushing praise of a yacht.

Boats as good as this don’t come along that often, but when they do, I feel like I have the best job in the world.

X 4.0 : Lively understatement at 12 metres in the test

Hauke Schmidt

 ·  17.10.2023

Steering is a joy on the cross. The large headsail is optional; a self-tacking jib comes as standard.

The measured values for the X 4.0 test

  • The X 4.0 in detail: technical data and more
  • Current price of the X 4.0
  • YACHT rating of the X 4.0

Bright red and polished to a shine, construction number 1 stands jacked up in front of the shipyard building, awaiting delivery - no, not quite, the pretty little ship is a whopping 40 years old and the first X ever built, an X-79. Tracked down in England and completely overhauled, it almost steals the show from the actual novelty; it lies behind the building on the dock and is no less shiny, in white with light grey decorative stripes, but much more discreet.

The understatement matches the claim of the X 4.0. As the smallest model in the current Pure-X line, it is designed to combine the living comfort and ease of use of the XC-38 with the sailing performance of the XP-38, while at the same time appearing sporty and luxurious. Visually, the X 4.0 is closer to the Performance series: the stern shape, bow nose and side line of the superstructure are very reminiscent of the XP-38, but the freeboard, hull and waterline width and therefore the volume of the hull have increased significantly. In terms of overall length and waterline length, however, the designs are only separated by a few centimetres, which means that the new X 4.0 is actually a 38-foot yacht that is only just over twelve metres thanks to the fixed bow nose.

The competition in comparison

  • Dehler 38 SQ: Dehler's modified performance cruiser on test
  • Grand Soleil 40: New performance cruiser from Italy put to the test
  • Italia 11.98: Fast, beautiful and exciting

In terms of construction, the 40 takes an intermediate route. The hull is laminated with epoxy resin in a vacuum infusion process and tempered, as is now standard practice at X. In contrast to the Performance series, however, no carbon fibre floor assembly is used. Instead, there is the tried and tested hot-dip galvanised steel frame with a stop point for a hot-drop. Together with the larger and therefore heavier fuselage and the interior fittings, this puts pressure on the displacement. At 8.1 tonnes, the 40 weighs around 1.4 tonnes more than the XP-38.

X-Yachts 4.0: simply efficient

Little of this is noticeable on the water. The view from the wheel over the spacious cockpit, the wide running decks and the striking superstructure leaves no doubt that you are on a massive ship, but the physical feedback is completely different.

As soon as the sails are set, the X feels agile, it accelerates spiritedly and sits extremely well on the rudder. X-Yachts not only develops the hull lines and keels in its in-house design department, but also customises the rudder blades. What seems to be particularly successful in the case of the 4.0: the boat reacts very directly to steering inputs, but does not appear nervous. Above all, however, the blade provides very detailed feedback on the current conditions. This makes it easy to steer the X optimally on the wind edge. An impending sun shot is also signalled at an early stage. If you overdo it under gennaker, the rudder pressure increases until the steering becomes noticeably soft. However, this is not followed by a sudden stall. Instead, there is still enough rudder effect to fall away or release the sheet.

Quite apart from the associated sailing fun, a rudder blade with such sensitive and good-natured tuning is a blessing, especially with a small crew. Which fits perfectly with the concept of the X 4.0: It should be just as easy to manoeuvre single-handed, with the family or as a couple, as it is with a larger crew, for example at club regattas. The basic equipment includes a self-tacking jib, which means that sail handling is basically limited to the mainsheet and traveller. Both can be easily trimmed in single or double-handed mode by the helmsman, who can sit either in front of or behind the wheel.

Ideal conditions on the test day

The sheet runs directly over the traveller to two winches embedded in the ends of the cockpit coaming. The system runs smoothly thanks to large deflection blocks. The sheet of the self-tacking jib, on the other hand, ends at the halyard winches on the companionway and is out of reach. The test boat was equipped with the optional 106 per cent genoa. In this configuration and with the half metre higher carbon mast, the X achieves a sail load factor of 4.7. The standard boat is only 4.4, so a code zero should be helpful in light winds.

On the test day, the wind was blowing at 14 to 17 knots, which are ideal conditions for the available sail area. The X feels particularly at home on the cross; 6.8 knots with a wind angle of around 41 degrees is impressive. She also copes well with gusts without the need for complex trim corrections. With the 125 square metre gennaker, the log oscillated between 8.6 and 9.3 knots.

If necessary, the sail trim can be quickly adjusted to the wind conditions using the hydraulic backstay tensioner, outhaul, traveller and cunningham. Only the operation of the lower deck furling system, which is steered via the superstructure, has too much friction. You will look in vain for double upwind trim devices on the 4.0, a concession to the sheer deck layout. The target group is unlikely to miss this.

The interior of the X 4.0

But warm up all the more to the cosy interior. The interior is finished in either light oak or teak. Laminate is only used for the floorboards; the other components are made of veneered marine plywood, are solid or moulded and are all immaculately lacquered. This ensures a long service life and a high-quality look for the interior. At launch, the X is only available as a two-cabin version with a large starboard locker, a washroom with shower and a fully-fledged navigation station. A three-cabin version will follow next spring. The forecastle will then be removed; the washroom will shrink and move forwards. The navigation corner will also become a folding table.

The L-shaped galley and the foredeck remain unchanged. Overall, the interior looks fresh and light, and is clearly reminiscent of the XC line if the optional wall units are selected. However, the hull windows are lower, allowing the lockers to pass through and visually stretching the saloon.

The practical details are also right: There are solid handrails and four opening side windows; the hull windows and a deck hatch in the saloon allow plenty of natural light into the boat. The space under the comfortable seat recesses is almost completely taken up by tanks and batteries. However, there is plenty of storage space in the folding table and lockers.

The inconspicuous coaming integrated into the pantry worktop is worth mentioning. The small elevation prevents splash water from running into the refrigerator when washing up. It's also nice that the cooling compressor is seawater-cooled even in the standard version, which protects the battery and doesn't heat up the kitchen unit.

Sleep better on the X 4.0

The amount of space and impression of space in the saloon are good, but not much different from what you are used to on a boat of this size. The foredeck, on the other hand, is a stunner. As there is no additional wet room, it is very spacious.

You sleep on an island bed that is two metres long and only 1.00 to 1.30 metres wide. The additional skylight above the headboard is a nice touch. It provides light during the day and allows a direct view of the starry sky at night. The hull windows, the deck hatch and the forward-facing window strip in the superstructure allow even more light into the owner's cabin. Clothing can be stored in two wardrobes and the surrounding lockers. Larger items can be conveniently stowed under the bunk, and the cushions and cushion support fold upwards with a flick of the wrist, assisted by gas pressure.

The aft area is not quite as princely. However, the sleeping area and, above all, the height above the berth are comfortable and well suited for two adults. Thanks to the skylight, hull window and window to the cockpit, there is plenty of light and air.

The X 4.0 is positioned very precisely between the existing performance and cruising lines of the Wert. Compared to the XP, the living comfort in particular has increased significantly. The extra pounds are hardly noticeable on the water. It provides the sailing pleasure to be expected from an X on all courses and can be sailed efficiently even by small crews thanks to its simple handling. Compared to the competition, however, you have to pay the typical X surcharge.

Pocket Luxury Yacht

The all new X4⁰ is the smallest model in the Pure X range; blending quality, performance and styling with cruising capability.

Hot out of the X-Yachts Design Office came the X4⁰, a forty-foot performance cruising yacht that is just as capable for some serious mileage as it is blasting around the cans at the weekend. The new baby Luxury X-Yacht joins the hugely successful and critically acclaimed Pure X range.

The design philosophy was very clear from the outset - like all our yachts, we place a huge emphasis on giving the owner a superb and comfortable sailing experience, on a yacht that is easy to handle by all the crew.

The X4⁰ was launched on 20 th June 2019. What a way to celebrate X-Yachts’ 40 th Anniversary!

X-Yachts has developed an online web-configurator for each of the Pure X models, enabling you to design your own version of the sail yacht. Configure your own dreams.

“arguably the benchmark for today’s 40ft performance cruiser”

Light, strong and stiff

With the introduction of the X-65 in 2007, X-Yachts started to infuse hulls for performance yachts utilising epoxy resin. Epoxy infusion construction offers fantastic control over the laminate allowing it to be optimised to maximise strength and stiffness, whilst saving weight.

In the X4⁰ all weight saved is used to increase the yacht’s stability enabling the crew to have a more relaxed time and to feel safer and more comfortable. The fact, that the hull is cured, baked at high temperatures for almost 24 hours, not only optimises the hull material properties but also minimises the risk of the darker coloured hull surfaces to suddenly start posturing, losing the surface finish.

With over 10 years of experience building epoxy infused yachts, X-Yachts took the decision in 2018 to build all models using this technology, one of the only yacht builders to do so.

Construction

At the heart of the X4⁰ is the galvanised steel keel grillage structure. Pioneered by X-Yachts back in 1981, the galvanised steel hull girder offers superb reassurance and safety. Its primary role is to spread keel and mast loads into the hull and it also enables the yacht to withstand extreme shock loads from grounding or an impact with a submersed object.

Not only is the keel structure immensely strong, it is also reliable and very easy to inspect for potential damage.

Bolted to the steel grillage is the keel with iron fin and heavy lead bulb with moderate draft. There is both a shallow and a deep draft option available.

Deck layout

The standard deck layout comes with: 4 winches, two halyards, self-tacker sheet and control line winches next to the entrance, and two main sheet winches aft of the cockpit’s backrest coamings within reach of the helmsman. The deck has an integrated recessed self-tacker track for an 88% jib.

There is an option for coach roof top longitudinal Genoa tracks and two dedicated Genoa sheet winches on top of the cockpit backrest coamings, enabling the Genoa size to go up to 106% for improved light wind performance.

Scandinavian Interior Design

There will be plenty of natural light and ventilation throughout the entire accommodation.

Craftmanship

The interior of the X4⁰ is designed to maximise the space available, creating a functional, safe and stylish user experience below deck. Once again, the interior design will have Danish design flair and carpentry at its very best.

The craftsmanship and detailing will be of a very high standard, being both traditional but with a modern appearance. The wooden veneer will be Nordic Oak as standard, with other options on offer.

Time-limited event: Battlefield 2042 | Dead Space

With 7.4 we’re also introducing a new time-limited event: Battlefield 2042 | Dead Space

During this event, players will experience Outbreak. A new 4-player squad PvE experience where you will fight waves of Augmented Targets. Starting on the western end of Redacted, players fight through eight sectors while completing objectives until they call an elevator to exfiltrate out on the far-eastern end of the map.

Keep your wits

Outbreak is a high-intensity survival mode that will test your skills with enemies getting tougher and tougher the farther you progress through the sectors. Your squad will need to find ways to overcome the Augmented Target’s onslaught and counteract overwhelming waves of enemies.

Adapt and overcome

Players will be tasked with navigating through Redacted and adapt through successive waves, as you progress you’ll find armory stations to purchase weapons, be warned; ensure you use your resources wisely, as they are limited.

Remember: Your final objective is to reach extraction, Augmented Targets will respawn endlessly, so don’t rush into the unknown.

How do I play Outbreak?

Outbreak is a time-limited mode that runs from July 9 to 16, 2024. It's a 4-player PvE where you can pick your class and specialist freely or you can select a Specialist that would complement the other choices that your squad has selected.

Players receive a single life per wave, and if one individual out of your squad survives you will be able to respawn on the next wave. All Specialist Gadgets, Traits, and Class Abilities are active in this mode. Killing Augmented Targets rewards you with Ascension Points which you can spend on upgrades for your weapons at armory stations.

Areas of Improvements

Improving the SRAW in line with other Rocket Launchers

We have heard your feedback about the SRAW, we agree that this newly added rocket launcher is not up to par with the rest of its weapon class. With Update 7.4 we are enacting the following changes which we believe will help to bring the SRAW into a more viable and attractive option.

Lowered the zoom and increased the field of view when players are aiming down the sight with the SRAW for better visibility of targets, both for close and further ranges.

Additionally, we have removed the in-world icon of the missile and also reduced the audio cue for the missile quite significantly, this should result in the SRAW being much more difficult to hear as an incoming missile before it is too close.

Persistent Reloading on SRAW and G-84 TGM Rockets.

Update 7.4 will bring in a persistent reload timer on the SRAW and G-84 TGM, this move is to prevent an exploitative loop that would allow a large number of rockets to take place and fresh supplies waiting upon redeployment.

We believe this does not bring anything healthy to the game when used at this level and as a preventative measure, the reload timer will now persist through death. If a player dies from normal circumstances, this effect will be nullified and players will spawn with a normal ammo count, however methods such as manually redeploying will result in the persistent reload taking effect.

MD540 Nightbird Balance Pass

Following the recent changes to Attack Helicopters a few seasons ago, we are bringing in similar changes to the MD540 Nightbird to achieve further consistency with other helicopters and balancing.

In the past, we have made some changes to the MD540 Nightbird in order to bring it in line with other vehicles, however, this aircraft had traditionally been more powerful and stayed higher than we were comfortable with.

The flying characteristics will change with the MD540 Nightbird resulting in it being more in line with our other Attack Helicopters.

This aircraft will now feel heavier, and hinge upon more momentum-based control following the changes to Attack Helicopters in the past. We want pilots to feel like they are flying an actual physical entity over a lightweight vehicle that is overly responsive and twitchy.

These changes to mobility aim to balance the vehicle out as well as make it a consistent experience with other aircraft.

  • Significantly lowered the auto-leveling of the MD540 Nightbird when using forward input.
  • Tweaked the inertia tensors to make sure the vehicle feels heavier and less twitchy, reducing the pendulation effect of the helicopter when swinging left and right on the x-axis.
  • MD540 Nightbird will now gain a slight increase in speed when nosing downwards.
  • Tweaked the third-person camera with a focus on it now being lower and closer to the vehicle in order to feel more connected to it.
  • Removed 1 AGM from the MD540 Nightbird as it is no longer required for this vehicle to be a potent anti-vehicle helicopter.

XFAD-4 Draugr equipment slot change

We have updated the equipment slots on the XFAD-4 Draugr and aligned the DRFM Jammer with other countermeasure options. The DRFM will now stop all incoming lock-on attempts, further making this consistent with other countermeasure options such as the flares for the sake of muscle memory.

  • The radar missile of SU57 no longer locks onto attack helicopters or the XFAD Draugr while the DRFM Jammer is active.
  • EBLC-Ram 40mm cannon blast radius damage distribution improvements, resulting in damage drop from the center of the blast being more evenly distributed.
  • DRFM Jammer no longer stops working when CIX Valravn enters cooldown.
  • C5 now applies correct damage to EBLC-Ram’s back panel, this means 2 C5 will be enough to destroy the vehicle.
  • Improvement to XFAD-4 Draugr anti-vehicle rockets hit registration against other vehicles.
  • Hoverbike now gets destroyed with 1 AA lock-on shot such as stingers or other vehicle anti-air weaponry.
  • Lowered YUV-2 Pondhawk height limit by 100m.
  • Lowered magnetic effect of the YUV-2 Pondhawk when near the ground
  • Fixed various tooltip issues and added a hint for a first-person free look for Fighter Planes.
  • Fixed an issue with SU57 third-person zoom being different than F35, they should now be a lot closer to one another.
  • Fixed an issue with XFAD-4 Draugr Crosshair getting stuck at times when switching from first person to third person.
  • Jets 25mm cannon damage vs infantry has been lowered from 40 to 25.
  • Fixed an issue with Jets 35mm cannon dealing too little damage to soldiers, it will now correctly deal 40 body damage.
  • Fixed issues with Attack Helicopters 30mm cannon and XFAD-4 Draugr cannons damage sound feedback was missing.
  • Fixed an issue with keybinding not displaying correctly on XFAD-4 Draugr weapons.
  • Made the primary countermeasure of the Draugr DRFM jammer using the same input as other vehicles to help with muscle memory and consistency

MD540 Nightbird

  • Third person camera has been lowered and is now closer to the vehicle. Reducing the pilot's perspective of a pendulation effect and making the flying experience more grounded.
  • Significantly reduced auto-leveling of the Nightbird.
  • Increased gained speed by nosing down.
  • AGM on Nightbird has been lowered from 2 to 1.
  • Fixed an issue with laser sight and flashlight icons in soldier inventory not staying lit up after switching weapons
  • Fixed an issue with the order of the attachments on the attachment screen
  • Fixed an issue with reloading sound effects on RPT 31
  • Fixed an issue with an incorrect sound effect being present on DFR Strife 40mm

Characters and Gadgets

  • By popular request, we have reduced the zoom of the SRAW.
  • Increased field of view on the SRAW.
  • Significantly lowered audio cue from the missile, especially in the distance.
  • Removed in-world UI elements of the missile except for the user.
  • Added a timer for SRAW and Lis’ G-84 TGM missile in events of redeploying to stop exploiting these gadgets
