Travelling to a foreign country to buy a sailboat where they speak a different language seemed like an adventure but also a potential challenge. It was truly an adventure, but the challenging aspects were eliminated by the phenomenal work and effort of the Marine Team at Club Nautico de Valencia. I was looking for a used sailing yacht in good condition from one owner in the size of 40-45 feet. In the internet I found “Baraka”, a Beneteau Oceanis 423 from 2005 in Denia/Spain. After my initial request regarding some additional information about the boat I got from Paco Maldonado / MarineTeam an extensive description. Motivated by this nice first contact my wife and I travelled to Denia to visit the boat in June 2017, next to other boats in Denia, Almerimar and Malaga. Paco showed us every detail and mentioned also the shortcomings of the boat during a 2-3 hour presentation. After we made up our mind and negotiated the price I had the opportunity to visit the boat again on the dry dock after cleaning and antifouling painting end of August. The next day the boat was put to water again and Paco and myself did a brief sailing test and an extended check of the whole boat. After signing the purchase contract Paco stayed in touch with me in the following weeks and asked for my first experience with “Baraka” during a sailing trip to Ibiza and Formentera with my family. Furthermore, MarineTeam helped me with the handling of the Spanish authorities and recommended shipyards and local technicians, since I will update the yacht with additional equipment. After looking at several boats in the UK, I finally found the one that fitted our needs in Spain. I was a bit nervous about going all the way to Spain to buy a boat, but Paco made the whole process very easy and secure. From jazz festivals to the month-long Feria de Julio (July Fair), with so much on offer and a year-round climate, the city is host to cultural events throughout the year. The most important festival is Las Fallas which takes place each March and includes a spectacular display of huge papier-maché figures of celebrities and politicians paraded through the streets and then ceremoniously burned whilst fireworks and music blaze while locals cook vast wheels of traditional paella in the streets. It’s not for the feint of heart, but it’s an experience that will ensure your luxury yacht charter vacation is like no other.
