Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 boat test – the next big thing for the world’s biggest builder?

Beneteau’s new stepped hull design works so well this Oceanis 46.1 could become its most popular model ever

After upgrading the status of the ominous black clouds ahead from threatening-looking to really quite alarming, we turned to head back downwind… and hoisted even more sail. Boom! As gusts in the high 20s started barrelling through, this yacht really put on a show. Reaching and surfing, we were all whooping with delight, like kids with a powerful toy, especially when we clocked over 14 knots’ boat speed. Now this was what you’d call a test sail!

We were on board Beneteau’s brand new Oceanis 46.1, a design tasked with updating the company’s most popular model, sailing off Port Ginesta, Barcelona, under full main and Code 0. The designer, Pascal Conq, was with us and we had all now become intent on seeing just what this ‘fat-nosed’ new shape was capable of.

It was one of those days when it could have all gone wrong. The fact that it didn’t and that we were actually treated to an exhilarating, unforgettable sail – the type where you step ashore and can’t wipe the grin off your face – simply confirmed that the 46.1 is a quite brilliant new model from the world’s largest boatbuilder. That it looks set to become the biggest-selling cruising monohull is perhaps due to other factors, however.

Replacing a bestseller

To backtrack, the Oceanis 45 I tested in 2011, which went on to win a European Yacht of the Year award, is Beneteau’s most popular model to date. With more than 800 sold, it is arguably the most successful production cruiser of modern times. It’s no surprise then that Beneteau wanted to keep the key strengths and selling points of the 45, nor that it chose to repeat the winning design combination of Finot Conq for hull lines and Nauta Yachts for the styling and interior.

Conq explained that the design team wanted to retain the primary features of sailing performance, spacious cockpit and interior volume. This, he said, has all been placed within a new and more powerful hull shape, with a stepped or full-chined hull, with greater righting moment and the addition of twin rudders for added control.

The new 46.1 also has plenty of options, including a ‘First Line’ upgrade, which further increases performance by adding a taller mast and deeper keel.

A win-win shape

In 2017 Beneteau launched the Berret Racoupeau-designed 51.1, the first of its new seventh-generation Oceanis range to use this stepped hull, together with a much fuller bow shape. The resultant forward internal volume and particularly sharp Nauta styling helped it sell like hot cakes (more than 200 we are told).

The Oceanis 46.1 shares a similar look and the only main difference with its layout is that there is no option for a crew cabin in the forepeak. However, the chine on the 46.1 runs all the way along the hull above the boot top, unlike the forward chine on the 51.1, which tapers out below the central hull portlight.

“We go in the fat nose direction,” Conq explains. “We found an area where there are no losses, just better performance and space. Take out the volume from under the waterline and put it at the sides – that’s the key!”

Conq found there was no need to widen the waterline like the Oceanis 51.1, which seems to make for a telling difference on the water. The 46.1’s hull is less dumpy, with less wetted surface area, reveals Conq. This was very evident when I did my first sail trial of the 46.1 in Newport, Rhode Island, when the two boats squared up to each other. The 46.1 simply sailed through the 51.1 and is clearly a more slippery design.

We had glorious conditions, in early September, sailing on the sunny, historic racing waters, in a building thermal breeze of 6-12 knots. That particular 46.1 had a typical US spec, including a shallow 1.75m keel, the standard in-mast furling main, plus an optional large genoa instead of the self-tacking jib. Close-hauled, we clocked 6-6.3 knots in 7.8-8.3 knots true wind. The new bowsprit is a useful addition over the old Oceanis 45, as it encourages the easy deployment of a flying sail. Our speed rose to 8.5 knots with the Code 0 unfurled.

The only minor negative of our Newport trial was a rudder alignment issue, which made that boat want to turn to port. However, as I was to find out during my next outing, there is power in reserve on this new hull shape and no shortage of enjoyment on the helm.

Sailing the GTI model

The Oceanis 46.1 we tested from Port Ginesta in October was a performance ‘First Line’ version, with a deeper, lead bulb keel, a taller mast and a genoa, which provides 28% more sail area. Beneteau says this is an option many clients coming from its First range choose. It was during this test for the European Yacht of the Year competition that we were able to see how the 46.1 handles in wind and waves.

Punching out into a 2m swell and 15 knots true wind, both of which increased with the threatening approach of the dark clouds, the 46.1 showed a comfortable and consistent turn of speed, heading upwind at 7.5 plus knots. Perched to windward, we enjoyed a relatively comfortable motion.

“The camber allows for a less full bow than the Jeanneau,” Pascal Conq remarked, referring to Jeanneau’s latest SO440 and SO490, which have very full forward ends and full chines. He added that this helps to keep the 46.1 from slamming upwind.

We were heeling a fair bit yet there remained a very light, but guiding amount of weather helm. A bar joining the twin rudders and textile linkage to the wheels helps provide direct helm feedback.

After a good spell sailing to weather, we then experienced the exhilarating downwind ride I described earlier. In 20 knots true with Force 6-7 gusts, we were soon easily maintaining double figures. The wake separates at around 11 knots, which happened regularly with a bit of encouragement from the short wave pattern.

These waves were coming across us slightly rather than directly following, but as the apparent wind moved forward with our speed we were able to soak down enough to enjoy some memorable short surfs, clocking between 12-14.5 knots. We weren’t actively trimming either – the main was pinned against the spreaders and the Code 0 sheet was left in the self-tailer jaws – but, boy, was it a fun ride.

Although it was an impressive display of power and speed, what really struck me was how comfortable the Oceanis 46.1 felt. The twin rudders never even hinted that they might lose grip and hand us a scary, expensive or potentially embarrassing broach. This is a reassuring asset on a family cruiser.

Warm weather deck

The Oceanis 46.1 has a modern, Med-style, extra spacious cockpit set-up, extended at each end by a full-beam bathing platform and sunbeds on the flat coachroof. The helm area is similar to that of the 51.1, designed for one person to be able to sail the boat and control the winches from aft. “Clients really like winches aft and out of the cockpit,” Beneteau product manger Clément Bercault explained, reasoning that it leaves a huge cockpit area clear for the family.

The layout allows you to sail the 46.1 short-handed, but only if you are tidy and organised with running rigging. Thankfully, there is a useful locker for rope tails, with a mesh material base to allow draining. There is only just enough room to fit a winch handle between the primary and main winch each side, which may encourage people to opt for the powered winch upgrade.

The helmsman can share the raised panel on which the winches are mounted to keep a dry seat. However, it is too wide in the aft quarters to be able to wedge in there comfortably and still be able to reach the wheel.

I like the large cockpit table, which provides a sturdy foot brace when heeled and sitting on the cockpit bench. It has an integral fridge and, best of all, room enough to house an easily-accessible liferaft beneath.

There are no bench lockers, the space instead used for headroom below. So deck stowage is all in the ends, in a deep sail locker and quarter lockers. The latter will not suit larger items as they contain unprotected steering gear and electronics. The finish in these aft lockers looks poor, featuring bare plywood and liberal amounts of glue.

Where centimetres count

The layout below decks is understandably similar to the successful Oceanis 45. “We looked at where we could gain space everywhere with the new hull shape,” said Bercault as we descended the 45º companionway to escape the torrential rain.

So although the 46.1 is only 10cm longer than the 45 and has the same beam, its maximum beam is carried further forward and higher up, to increase the internal volume.

The chine gives us 0.5m more beam,” Bercault explained. That beam gained above the waterline allows for the saloon berths to be pushed out 15cm each side compared with its predecessor, which buys valuable room. However, it’s up forward where you really notice the difference. The full bow sections allowed Beneteau to take the forward cabin of the Oceanis 48 and drop it into this 46.1, which tells you something about the volume.

This owner’s cabin is astonishing for the yacht’s length, including an island double berth on which you can comfortably sleep with your head forward. The use of separate shower and heads compartments works very well, further emphasising the sense of space in the cabin. It also makes for a straightforward conversion into two ensuite cabins for the charter version.

The extra space is also felt in the saloon and galley. I like the addition of an inboard worktop section in the galley, for example, which gives more serving space and a bracing position for when working at heel.

Within the multiple layout options, including three to five cabins with two to four heads, there is also the choice of a longitudinal galley with navstation to starboard.

I like the light Nauta styling, which brings smart elements learned from the Oceanis Yachts 62, such as the bookcases built into the central bulkhead, the fabric linings and the indirect lighting. The brushed light oak veneer means no shortage of beige, but, together, with the huge hull portlights, this works well to keep the interior light and bright.

Quite why Beneteau goes to these styling lengths but won’t stretch to fitting rubber gaskets on the sole boards I fail to comprehend, however. Can you imagine walking around a prospective new house with each footstep being announced by a loud creaking? It feels like some sort of pantomime horror scene.

Stowage and tankage is moderate and in keeping with a yacht designed for coastal sailing and family holidays. By this I mean that the Oceanis 46.1 is an ideal yacht for cruising or chartering in the Med for a couple of weeks, rather than a design to suit long distance sailing or lengthy spells aboard.

It’s rare to have the opportunity to sail a new production yacht in a variety of conditions and with different options, and to be able to really push the boat. It is perhaps just as uncommon to see it perform so consistently in all conditions. While its builders will be acutely aware how important the design, styling and accommodation space is to maintain a healthy order book, the designer of the 46.1 clearly knows that the fundamental aspect of success is sound sailing qualities.

With their latest full bow designs, both Beneteau and Jeanneau have added a new dimension in volume for cruising yachts, particularly with their enormous forward cabins. The Oceanis 46.1 takes all the best bits of the excellent 45 and makes them slightly better. The overall impression is of just how much deck space and internal volume you get inside 45 (and a bit) feet.

If the finish quality matched the design this would be a very difficult boat to beat. Even so, the Oceanis 46.1 has raised the bar significantly in the highly competitive melting pot of midsize family cruisers, in terms of both looks and performance. And I wager that it will go on to be as successful, if not more so, than the 45.

Get the design right and that sensation of power and control is intoxicating, but if the balance is wrong, it can sour the whole experience.

Happily, Beneteau have got the steering on its new 46ft yacht right — very right, as it turned out.

That’s not all: the saloon is modern, bright and spacious, the owner’s cabin has acres of space and the cockpit is well laid out for those who want to sail while others can relax in comfort.

The 46.1’s predecessor, the Oceanis 45, was lapped up by private owners and charter companies alike, and the 46.1 offers more: more space, more berths, more sail area.

Charterers will be happy with the option of berths galore and easy handling, and private owners can opt for better performance.

So will she become the most popular boat Beneteau have produced, as the Oceanis 45 was before her?

THE TEST VERDICT

Beneteau has succeeded in producing cruisers that strike the right note with customers for the last 20 years, and the 46.1 promises to do just that. It hits what is the core of the new yacht market at the moment, as evidenced by the slew of 46-footers launched recently.

The concept and layout of the 46.1 has already been well proven in the Oceanis 45, while offering improvements in the feeling of space, an attractive new aesthetic, and class-leading practical details such as engine access and cockpit stowage.

It did all this while still delivering a perfectly balanced sailing performance and helming pleasure. Admittedly, this boat was a pre-production prototype and there were a few rough edges.

The layout we tested offered plenty of space, but personally I would prefer the longitudinal galley option which offers more stowage in the galley and gives all three cabins en suite heads, which is ideal for larger groups.

WOULD SHE SUIT YOU AND YOUR CREW?

The mid-40-foot market is awash at the moment so you’re spoilt for choice of new 46-footers.

Beneteau have just made the decision harder, especially with its ‘First Line’ edition.

This sporty version adds more spice and should, on paper at least, be quicker than her rivals in the same price bracket.

A comfortable cruiser with some added oomph, yes please! She also wins over her rivals for cockpit space and sail handling.

Where the 46.1 really scores, though, is with the helm, which felt light, rewarding and made her a really enjoyable boat to sail.

Not everyone will want the extra speed the First Line offers, and if space and comfort are the priority, then the regular 46.1 ticks these boxes too.

Once Beneteau address the finish quality issues I saw here, then the 46.1 has all the ingredients to beat her rivals in this size bracket.

You get a lot of boat for your money, but the First Line adds a fair amount to the final price.

The re-birth of the modern cruiser-performance sailing yacht

Following in the wake of the Oceanis 51.1, many of the production shipyards saw the continuum of wide stern hulls and full bow design with a long chine opening up for wider interior spaces and focus on ease of handling and more down-wind focused sailing and ease of movement on deck. 

The modern cruising boat was born and more design aspects from reputable performance-orientated naval architects were being introduced as two of the largest production-orientated shipyards; the Groupe Beneteau and Bavaria Yachtbau, introduced a distinct design feature in their midrange ranges of sailing yachts – the Oceanis range for Benetau and the C-range for Bavaria. 

The Beneteau Oceanis range was long a dual-purpose yacht as the Beneteau First range was set on pause for a while and clients were offered a First Line Package to “spruce” up the rather under-rigged and downwind-focused Oceanis to a more livelier and performance-cruiser orientated configuration. With the additional First Line package, the boat owner will receive a deeper, lead bulb keel, a taller mast and a genoa, which provides 28% more sail area. The Oceanis 46.1 is vintage Beneteau in terms of basic construction. The hull is moulded in polyester, while the deck is comprised of an injected fibreglass/foam-core sandwich, with a moulded-in anti-skid; the deck-stepped, double-spreader mast is aluminium; and both the shoal and standard-draft keels are cast iron

The Bavaria yachts had long ago forsaken the performance-focused market with its famous cooperation with FAAR and instead had launched arguably the most appreciated range of midsized sailing yachts and pure cruiser-focused range of yachts in their aptly named Bavaria Cruiser-line of sailing yachts. With the decision to modernize its range, they reached out to famous Italian naval architect Cossutti, with plenty of pedigree in the offshore racing and cruising world. 

Elegant – Smart Living Spaces – Fast Cruising – Easy Sailing

The Oceanis 46.1 is in itself a design separate from the 51.1, with its design team Pascal-Conq given the task to mirror the sporty feel and large-yacht aspects of the 51.1 into the 46.1. The design team is no stranger to Beneteau, as they have designed most of the smaller range Oceanis from 24-36 ft before taking on the 46.1 and also famous for having introduced the twin-rudder concept into high-octane racing classes like the IMOCA. Both the Oceanis 46.1 and the Bavaria C46 use the twin-rudder setup to compensate for their wide stern and high-freeboard hull designs. 

The first model in a second generation of Bavaria’s C-series yachts, the new Bavaria C46 offers plenty of internal volume and on-the-water performance. This is Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, which was originally launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet also claims better performance.

The Stepped Hulls vs. the V-Bow and Chines

What both these modern cruiser sailing yachts clearly have in common, is the incredible space and beamy nature of the yachts that create an incredible amount of roominess below deck and space and stowage and ease of movement deckside. 

The Oceanis range with its “stepped” hulls and with a chine that runs from stern to bow in combination with its wide stern, creates a roominess and feeling you earlier only found on large cruiser sizes of +50ft and up. The owner’s cabin for example on the Oceanis 46.1 is comparable to the predecessor of the older design of the Oceanis 50 and the 55. 

The Pascal Conq-designed Oceanis 46.1 features a “stepped” hull, in which the canoe body flares dramatically to a chine immediately above the waterline, thereby allowing Beneteau to maximize interior volume while maintaining a narrow entry forward. The new and more powerful hull shape of the Oceanis range, with a stepped or full-chined hull, with greater righting moment and the addition of twin rudders for added control.

Same principles apply with the new C-line design and characteristic features of the hull design with the typical Bavaria V‐bow and chines, which not only give the Bavaria C46 impressive sailing characteristics but also create more light space and living comfort below deck in the saloon as well as the cabins.

For the new BAVARIA C46, the C‐LINE concept has been further developed and re‐interpreted in all areas. For example, the characteristic features of the hull design with the typical Bavaria V‐bow and chines, which not only give the Bavaria C46 impressive sailing characteristics, but also create more light space and living comfort below deck in the saloon as well as the cabins. The Bavaria C46 sets a new standard in its class and is a yacht that combines long‐standing Bavaria strengths with new features, thus finding convincing solutions for many customers and requirements.

The slab-sided and modern design approaches to both these voluminous sailing yachts are aimed towards creating an experience like that of a modern apartment and maximising the use of the yacht at anchor – a static experience. The concept of “building inside and out” is not strange to the cruiser range of the shipbuilding industry, as most of the appeal and interest comes from the charter-industry that demands easier handling yachts and comfort at anchor and space to combine several layout options and configurations.  

Is all this comfort then at the cost of a sailing experience? Yes, there is no denying that, albeit these naval yacht designer know their thing and looking at both hull designs their arguably focus on down-wind sailing and making it easy for crew and guests alike to be comfortable. However, with the First Line package offered for the Oceanis range and its famously slippery hull design and modern rigging from the Cossutti-designed Bavaria C-line, we are not surprised that they would rather be called performance-cruisers than just your average holiday-making cruiser and sailing yacht. 

The opinions are divided on the matter of what entails an ideal live-aboard monohull sailing yacht: the strength of the design, construction and feeling at the helm of the performance-optimised monohulls such as the Italia Yachts, Grand Soleil, X-Yachts, J-Boats, or the luxury of the all-inclusive optimal holiday platform of the larger series production shipyards  such as the Oceanis range from Beneteau, Sun Odyssey from Jeanneau, C-Line from Bavaria, Impression from Elan, the Hanse or the Dufour range of cruiser sailing yachts. 

We are not here to create division but rather to point out the why and how. For the yacht charter industry, the advantages are obvious and plenty. Most of the above-mentioned production series shipyards are closely tied or owned by the same group as the large global charter companies that offer yacht charter ownership programs and investments, such as the Dream Yacht Charter, Navigare Yachting, SunSail and Moorings. 

For the charter industry, the advantages of this configuration are multiple:

• Beamy design: create plenty of main deck space and seating/lounging arrangements, allowing for a larger side deck, cockpits and bathing platforms.
• Volumuniuos hulls: increases the stowage -and payload capacity and width in the cabins.
• Skipper cabins: as with most of these designs, even at 45 feet there is room to accommodate skipper accommodation.
• Layout and Size: optimal cabin configurations and spacious double bed cabins cater for plenty of guests and even crewed charter.
• Saloon Main Deck: focus on dining arrangements and entertainment with larger galley sizes. No need for a navigational station as most time is spent at anchor or navigating short distances and a professional skipper often manages boat.
• Easy Push Button Sailing: usually underigged sailing yachts which are most pleasurable sailing “off the wind” and with most or all control and working lines drawn aft near the helm. Clear destination between guest areas and crew/helm area.

If you are unfamiliar with the two brands or the sailing yachts in question, here’s a brief introduction.

Bavaria Yachtbau

The Bavaria shipyard has been in the forefront of building sailing yachts on large scale for over 45 years. Today Bavaria Yachts is one of the most modern manufacturers of sailing yachts and motorboats worldwide. The shipyard has been known since its founding as an innovation leader in serial yacht manufacturing. Over 600 sailing yachts and motorboats are manufactured on the shipyard of BAVARIA YACHTS in Giebelstadt, near Würzburg in Germany. Four production lines, each 125 meters long, a carpenter’s workshop where the entirety of the yacht is constructed, two halls to manufacture hulls and decks, are accommodated on a large surface measuring 200,000 square meters. It’s needless to say – an impressive shipyard with a strong brand and almost a fan-based following in central and northern Europe. 

From the Shipyard:

“The BAVARIA C46 sets new standards in the combination of ample room, excellent sailing characteristics and innovative solutions. The BAVARIA C46 combines the typical generous BAVARIA space on board and the proven Made‐in‐Germany solidity with even more sailing performance and greater comfort on board. The distinctive chines at the stern and the BAVARIA V‐bow have already given the BAVARIA C38 and C42 exceptionally good and fast sailing characteristics. The BAVARIA C46 possesses agile steering, converts the wind even faster into boat speed and, at the same time, allows for maximally large cabins in the stern and foreship. Thus, space and sailing pleasure are a winning combination on the BAVARIA C46.”

Groupe Beneteau

Groupe Beneteau is a worldwide market leader for boats and a European frontrunner for leisure homes. With its global production capacities and global sales networks, the Group employs 7,600 people in France, the US, Poland, Italy, Portugal and China. Since 1884, the Beneteau family boatyard has successfully evolved through the decades, from fishing to recreational boating and diversified itself. Today, Groupe Beneteau, through its brands and services, has developed unique skill sets and technical know-how in boating and leisure homes.

In 2021, the Beneteau Groupe was bought up (59%) by investment group PPF and is part of a drive towards creating an even more dominating presence in the yacht charter market with the acquisition of both Dream Yacht Charter and Navigare Yachting. 

The Beneteau shipyard used to offer two lines of models for years, the Oceanis range and the First range. The latest model of Bavaria C-Line, a 14-meter, was presented as the world premiere at the Cannes Yachting Festival 2023 and was recently nominated for the 2024 European Yacht of the Year Award. Cossutti Hull Design

The Bavaria C46 follows in the footsteps of the Bavaria C38 and Bavaria C42, maximizing hull volume with full-length hull chines and a wide beam of 4.7m carried all the way aft. The hull is controlled with a single, deep and balanced spade rudder, and sea-kindliness  is improved by a v-bow section in the forefoot. This concept truly puts the “ease” in easy sailing with a flat hull shape, rigging, and rudder all working together for an engaging and enjoyable to sail despite the large volume. The shapes and designs of Cossutti are well-proven in the offshore category and his latest smaller and larger models with the Bavaria C-Line.

Improved version of the C45 at every point.

Maurizio Cossutti’s sixth design for Bavaria, the Bavaria C46, is the first model in a second generation of the German yard’s C-series, initially launched six years ago. The new boat offers significantly more interior volume than its predecessor, the C45 from 2018, yet claims better performance.

The requirements for a sailing yacht around 15 meters are much more versatile today. They can no longer be divided into classic categories such as performance or family cruiser, charter or owner’s yacht. During the development of the C46, the focus was solely on what offers our customers real added value on board. 

Larger and Better

Where the new Bavaria C46 shines is the sheer amount of space and accommodation on board. The only fixed point of the accommodation is the saloon and galley, with C-shaped seating around a table to starboard with a bench seat amidships and a sizeable C-shaped galley along the hull side to port. Aft of the galley is a forward-facing chart table – these are returning onto boats as remote working from onboard is now commonplace. 

Sleek Hulls yet still larger interior volumes and cabins

What Bavaria now calls its V-bow – broad forward sections that taper to a narrower waterline beam – is balanced by distinct chines aft. The net effect is improved accommodation volumes and greater form stability , yet little extra drag in light airs.

Contrary to many yards, Bavaria doesn’t believe dinghy garages are necessary for a yacht of this size. The pay-off is bigger 160cm-wide aft cabins that can be fitted with convertible twin/double beds. On deck, the cockpit is 10% longer than the C45, and there’s stowage for plenty of water sports toys.

The cockpit is more wide than long and more room has been created for the very spacious cockpit, the sun loungers on the foredeck or after a relaxing time on the large bathing platform, you can quickly get into the water. Heavy but useful water sports equipment is always stored within reach in the Bavaria B-BOX, so that the hours at anchor or in water can be enjoyed in a relaxed way by the entire crew.

So you see, the new Bavaria C46 is really conscious effort by the yard and designer to carefully improve on every aspect possible and listen to its current boat owners to find a good balance between what is most important for practical use and to stay true to the C-Line DNA.

The layout in the cockpit provides for two U-shaped seating groups, plus two separate tables that can be lowered as an option. With additional insert cushions, two very spacious sun loungers can be easily installed in the cockpit. What’s more, the passage through the cockpit remains free.

With six optional winch positions in the cockpit, the deck layout of the Bavaria C46 can be tailored to different requirements, be it for cruising with the family or for sporting use with a crew. Similar to the larger models C50 and C57, all sheets, halyards and control lines are routed to the helm stations, leaving the cockpit and the entrance to the cabin free. This makes the Bavaria C46 particularly suitable for sailors who often travel with a small crew or even single-handed.

This is a clear step away from the Cruiser Line and more simple finishing and classic options.  Fabric-covered panels on the main bulkhead and a linear lighting concept as well as leather on the stainless steel handles create a unique atmosphere in the salon and cabins. Teak or Esthec in the cockpit and the choice of the hull stripe color and many more details are also part of the package.

Layout Combinations to suite everyone

Bavaria continues to offer a wide choice of accommodation layouts, including a four cabin/four heads charter model, and three-cabin/three head option with a big owner’s suite forward. It’s also possible to substitute one aft head for a Pullman-style fifth cabin, or a multipurpose room that can be used for laundry, or as a workshop etc.

This is where the options kick in. The boat comes in three, four, or five cabin layouts, with either one or two double cabins forwards. The fifth comes from replacing the heads and shower compartment starboard aft with a bunk cabin, meaning two families of five could comfortably sail together.

For those looking to cruise without so many guests, the port heads and chart table can be replaced with a utility room, making space for washing machines and dryers, as well as ample stowage space for tools or as a wet locker. If you go for the four double cabin layout, you can also have en suite heads for every cabin. Some of these layouts will appeal more for charter companies, but the drawings look like Bavaria have got the heart of the boat right, and highly practical.

Sea lions basking in the sun on red-and-white buoys are often the first sight of wildlife as boaters set out to the open ocean from harbors dotting California’s coastline.

The buoys, however, are not just a tourist attraction for glimpsing the big marine mammals, but have also been a navigational tool and iconic landmarks for vessels entering and exiting the waterway.

Now, the U.S. Coast Guard is looking at removing some of the buoys, replacing them with “virtual” navigational aids used with GPS, a system that has some boaters concerned about the proposed change. And in Newport Beach and Santa Cruz, plans appear scrapped after community outcry in recent weeks.

“I feel like a lot of people have strong opinions, overwhelmingly to keep the buoys,” said Ryan Lawler, owner of Newport Coastal Adventure, who uses the one outside of the Newport Harbor for his ocean tours, but also as a longtime fisherman for navigation. “If something is there your whole life you get used to it, and the idea of it going away – that sucks.”

The Coast Guard proposal would replace the buoys with a virtual dot on an online chart. The Coast Guard regularly “assesses waterway risk and ways to leverage emerging technology to efficiently meet navigational safety needs,” officials said in a release about the proposal.

In Newport Beach, social media posts about the proposed changes quickly spread and the Coast Guard appears to have altered course and took the buoy off of the removal list, which has been published the last several weeks in a weekly notice that goes out to mariners. A letter from the Coast Guard that Lawler shared with the Register confirmed that due to public feedback, “the buoy will remain in place.”

In Santa Cruz groups formed to fight the plans to remove their “Mile Buoy” and several news articles have been written about the opposition to the plan.

“It serves thousands of fishermen, sailing students, recreational sail and power boaters, kayakers and paddleboarders,” r eads a letter to the editor in the Santa Cruz Sentinel. “Mile Buoy serves as a reference point for water rescues being directed from land. Even if you are not a boater, the buoy may serve you. This visual marker with its gentle fog horn and blinking light welcomes vessels approaching Santa Cruz from offshore.”

“This decision underscores our commitment to prioritizing safety while ensuring that the voices of the community are heard and considered,” said Capt. Steven Ramassini, chief of Coast Guard Office of Navigation Systems, in the release. “The invaluable feedback provided by the community has greatly contributed to our comprehensive understanding of the impacts associated with our proposed action.”

After an eight-week public comment period, Coast Guard officials said the opinions of users of the navigation system and community will be reviewed along with other analysis data for a decision on how best to proceed with the remaining proposed project.

In Newport Beach, indications that the buoy will remain in place were welcome news for Lawler and other boaters.

“From the time I heard that it was on the chopping block to the time I heard they had reversed the project, it was like a full priority for me,” Lawler said. “We couldn’t let this happen … we would have lost our buoys forever. For us, not only is it an important safety tool, but a major landmark. A defining landmark for Newport Harbor.”

On foggy days, the sound of the buoy helps guide boats to the entrance and some smaller boats, like kayaks or small aluminum fishing boats, may not have the advanced technology to find “virtual” buoys, he said.

Lawler also argued trying to find a buoy marker on a screen takes the boat driver’s eyes off the water.

Naturalist Daryth Morrissey, president of the American Cetacean Society, Orange County chapter, said her No. 1 worry was for the sea lions if the Newport Harbor buoy were to disappear.

“There’s so very few places for them to haul out,” she said.  “That is one of their go-to spots. For whale watching or marine mammal cruises, it’s almost a given there will be sea lions on the buoy.”
