Hunter 30 Review

sailboatdata hunter 30

The Hunter 30 built from 1974 until 1983 is a John Cherubini design, as was the companion Hunter 27. Over the course of its nine-year production run, approximately 1,000 were built. The latest 30 we examined was a 1980 model, hull #934.

The Hunter 30 is handsome from some angles but just a bit too flat in the sheer and high in the cabin top to be considered beautiful. The hull is very full to give a lot of interior room, but otherwise quite typical of the racer-cruisers of the 1970s.

The interior was originally a strong selling point for the boat. Almost every owner commented on the size of the interior – often relative to low price – when talking about their reasons for buying the 30.

Layout is conventional, with a good V-berth forward, then a head with small hanging locker opposite, settee berths on each side with a drop-leaf table in the middle, an L-shaped galley, with the sink underneath the companionway, and a quarter berth, with a tiny chart table at its head. The berths are of decent size, though a tall person will wish they were all a few inches longer.

Many of the boats have alcohol stoves (“Cooks about like a solar oven,” said one owner) that will be due for upgrading. The icebox on the boat we looked at had minimal insulation and would benefit from several more inches all around.

The deck house is high and wide, and this gives a look of spaciousness below. The white hull liner overhead helps to offset the extensive teak veneer on the bulkheads, ceilings, sole, and furniture.

There are adequate windows and hatches for adequate light inside, and opening portlights (Hunter was one of the first production boats to offer numerous opening ports as standard) to give good ventilation. If the boat has not been upgraded by the time of purchase, the new owner will probably want to add Dorade or solar vents to keep the air moving when the opening ports must be closed.

Finish below is average – typical of the low-cost production boats which depend on pre-fab components, rapidly installed in the hull. In our owner surveys, there were a great many complaints about sloppy detailing in the joinerwork, door hinges, hardware, and loose trim. Storage space is minimal, and water tankage of 35 gallons is marginally adequate for cruising.

The Hunter 30 is an American sailboat that was designed by John Cherubini as a cruising boat and was built between 1973 and 1983. During its ten-year production run 1,000 examples were completed. The boat was also supplied as an unfinished kit for amateur completion as the Quest 30.

The Hunter 30 was the first design marketed by the manufacturer under that name. Later boats with the same name are commonly referred to as the Hunter 30-2 and Hunter 30T to differentiate them from the earlier unrelated design. Adding to the confusion, the 2006 Hunter 31-2 was also marketed as the Hunter 30.

The Hunter 30 is a small recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig, a raked stem, a reverse transom, a skeg-mounted rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel, shoal-draft keel, or a keel and centerboard combination. It displaces 9,700 lb (4,400 kg) and carries 4,100 lb (1,860 kg) of ballast. The boat has a draft of 5.25 ft (1.60 m) with the standard keel and 4.3 ft (1.3 m) with the optional shoal draft keel. A tall mast version was produced for lighter wind areas, with a mast about 2.8 ft (0.85 m) higher. The boat was factory-fitted with a Japanese Yanmar diesel engine.

The design features a galley with a two-burner stove, sink, hot and cold water, a head with a stand-up shower, vanity and sink, nine port lights with bug screens, double life lines and a teak and holly cabin sole.

The centerboard version of the design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 186, while the shoal draft version of the design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 192. The tall mast version of the design has a PHRF racing average handicap of 180 and the tall mast version with the shoal draft keel has a PHRF racing average handicap of 192. All versions have a hull speed of 6.8 kn (12.59 km/h).

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

30 companies turned Trump down; now the brother can't pay his bond--womp-womp!

Image of sepiasiren, author

People said Elon Musk might rescue him. Maybe Saudi Arabia—heck, Jarvanka could even shave off some of those sweet, sweet billions they got while working in the White House doing the kind of grifting Republicans claim Hunter Biden and his Pappy engaged in (gotta love the blazing irony).

Poor, poor Trumpy—no such luck. So far, not a soul has come to the man’s rescue. Not a-one.

*Insert the sound of sad violins a-playing*

Not even Putin cast in his lot. Maybe the despot figured he tapped the last bit of juice he could out of his useful idiot.

As   per Business Insider :

Former President Donald Trump cannot afford to post an appeal bond covering   the $456 million he owes   New York state from last month's civil fraud judgment, his lawyers said Monday in a court filing. The filing said Trump had just one week to secure the $1 billion in cash reserves needed to persuade a company to write a $464 million bond to cover the judgments for the former president and his three fraud-trial codefendants. Securing such a high bond in time to meet a March 25 deadline "is a practical impossibility," despite "Defendants' ongoing diligent efforts," they wrote the massive 4,919-page filing. Read Trump's filing here . The filing contained more than 3,000 pages of transcripts from the nearly 11-week civil fraud trial. Trump is asking an appellate panel in Manhattan to postpone, or "stay," the requirement that he post a bond while he appeals. He's planning on winning the appeal, he said, at which point he would owe the state nothing, or at least less. Surety experts have told Business Insider that Trump would need   to set aside $500 million in cash   to secure the appeal bond he needs.

The unmitigated gall of this buffoon and his gaggle of bargain basement lawyers with their whole: “ He's planning on winning the appeal, he said, at which point he would owe the state nothing, or at least less!”

Yeah, sure. Throw yourself at the mercy of a court and system you  ridiculed. You attacked the city’s judge daily; he had to wonder if he would survive this trial with his life or his home intact; his clerk was constantly maligned, to do you a favor—all while hinting that the judgment he handed down was crooked.

There’s that winning strategy that has gotten Trump so far—down the hole, that is.

Lose everything loser

I don’t know about you guys, but I want to see the man living under an overpass, wearing nothing but suspenders and a barrel, with the entirety of his life’s belongings in a knapsack dangling from a stick.

And no, I don't think Ivanka will save him, nor should she. She will probably be glad to be rid of him; Lawd knows what that monster did to her or made her do.

I hope she spits on the ground he walks on as he enters prison for what he did to her and her brothers. Donnie messed them kids up for life.

I mean—look at them.

Trump ADMITS he DOESN’T HAVE MONEY for Bond, BEGS Court (youtube.com)

I think the chances of an appellate court allowing Trump to get out of his hefty penalty/bond payment are less than zero. I also seriously doubt anyone is going to put themselves on the hook for a man who claimed on Newsmax via his purse poodle, Alina Habba, that he could pay his bond a million-gazillion times over, so there!

But hey, his grift may not be over just yet! He can still go to the RNC—oh wait…

Well, his ever-loyal cult may be able to help him this go-round, am I right?

Dig deep, Maw and Paw MAGA—dig deep.

Trump DECLARATION SURFACES Showing How HE CAN’T AFFORD BOND (youtube.com)

30 Companies said NO WAY JOSE!!!!

READ: The real reason 30 banks turned down Donald Trump's pleas for $464m loan

Donald Trump   is in a pinch after 30 companies have allegedly turned down his request for a $464 million bond. The former president is in a time crunch as the bill for the February 23 civil fraud judgment comes due within the next week. But it's no surprise that financial institutions don't want to be associated with someone as politically and legally radioactive as Trump, says New York-based criminal defense attorney Dmitriy Shakhnevich ( READ MORE HERE )

This was the Tyrese Hunter that Texas basketball has been waiting to see | Bohls

sailboatdata hunter 30

  • Texas sellout crowd came to salute four seniors, but it was junior guard Tyrese Hunter who stole the show with 30 points.
  • If the Longhorns, bound for an eighth seed at worse in the NCAA Tournament, could be "elite" with such performances from Hunter, Oklahoma coach Porter Moser said.
  • With three wins in their last four games, the Longhorns roll into this week's Big 12 Tournament with a strong dose of confidence and momentum.

Saturday was to be a celebration.

After all, Max Abmas was ending his final regular season as a collegian after downing two game-winning shots for Texas and four in a brilliant career here and at Oral Roberts that has earned the shooting guard a staggering 3,073 points.

Dylan Disu didn’t start his career at Texas either, but with his vast repertoire of skills has elevated Longhorns basketball to a new level after leading the program to an Elite Eight appearance and brink of a Final Four last year. Ithiel Horton, too, began elsewhere, but following stops at Delaware State, Pittsburgh and UCF came to Austin to play a supporting role. The player dubbed “IT” didn’t always have the it factor, but brings a ton of energy.

Finally, Brock Cunningham, Mr. Longhorn himself, waved goodbye to an adoring capacity crowd of 11,073 at Moody Center that included former basketball greats LaMarcus Aldridge and Avery Bradley in the house.

Cunningham, considered a scoundrel from Waco to West Virginia, commemorated the occasion by drawing two more mystery fouls, one that I swear was for breathing too hard on his opponent. He said he doesn’t even own a black hat, “but I need one,” he said.

“He’s definitely the villain in the conference,” Disu said. “Heck, I didn’t like Brock before I came to Texas.”

The Vandy transfer does now as do all of Cunningham’s appreciative teammates and a capacity crowd that saluted all four of these players on a spectacular Senior Day that even include a rare blocked shot by Abmas.

So naturally a junior stole the show.

Somehow Tyrese Hunter didn’t get the memo. Texas' junior guard did bring party favors, however, with a career-best 30 points that helped the Longhorns beat archrival Oklahoma 94-80 even if he did crash the party.

“Oh, my bad,” Hunter said sheepishly.

No, Hunter was my goodness good.

More: Texas baseball will be good, but is it an elite team? Not right now, it isn't | Bohls

Uncharacteristically good, at least for this season. This was the Tyrese Hunter that Longhorn Nation has been waiting for since November. Oh, he’s had his moments like a team-high 21 points in a gritty win over Baylor, not to mention the coast-to-coast game-winning layup as time expired. And he leads the team in steals.

Red Panda, Saturday’s halftime entertainment act without peer, didn’t drop a bowl off her head. Hunter just dropped 30.

“Just seeing the confidence Tyrese had,” OU coach Porter Moser said. “When he has that, it’s a different dynamic for that team. When you get that guard scoring like that, along with Max and Disu, they’re elite.”

Texas' defense is coming around at the right time

Elite may be a little strong. After all, every expert worth his mock bracket ranks the Longhorns no better than a likely eight seed, but it’s conceivable they could creep up a seed line with a strong showing in the Big 12 Tournament.

With three wins in its last four games, there’s no doubt Texas (20-11) is hitting its stride after often scuffling during conference play. However, it hasn’t won three straight games since the start of January and has been forced to rely too heavily on the scoring of Abmas and Disu.

“At times, they’re elite,” Moser said, using that word again. “Physically, I thought Texas did so many good things. I think they’re outstanding defensively.”

That has been anything but a real strength this year. The Longhorns rank only 47th in defensive efficiency, according to Kenpom's metrics. Last year’s team, remember, ranked 13th and had everything to do with them going so deep in the tournament.

More: Texas basketball's veteran guards must step up to aid freshman Madison Booker | Golden

The Tyrese Hunter we've all been waiting for

That said, Texas put the clamps on OU, especially in the second half when the Sooners were held to 31% shooting and couldn’t keep up. Hunter saw to that. He was everywhere. He nailed three of his four 3-pointers. Didn’t miss from the free-throw line in nine chances. Had seven assists.

He was suddenly the player everyone here expected after showing up following a Big 12 freshman of the year campaign with Iowa State.

“I was pumped up all the way around,” Hunter said. “My confidence never goes away.”

His points occasionally do. He’d scored nine points or fewer in 10 of his last 15 games. Against Baylor he drained two 3-pointers in the opening minutes but made only two more buckets and finished with just 12 points. In the last six previous games, Hunter also had just 17 assists and 14 turnovers, a ghastly ratio.

More: No. 24 Texas slams No. 17 Texas Tech with four homers, two grand slams to snap losing skid

But on Saturday, he was electric. Unstoppable, even. OU had no answer for him.

While the Sooners trapped Abmas as soon as he emerged from the locker room and forced the ball out of his hands and tried to crowd Disu, Moody was Hunter’s personal playground. He did as he wished.

The starting point guard’s play has regressed for much of the year but has always given effort, played hard on defense and on this day stole the thunder from the seniors with a rousing performance. There’s been no real explanation for his struggles as he failed to give head coach Rodney Terry the third offensive option this 9-9 Big 12 team so desperately seeks.

Everyone knows he’s been the X-factor for this club. Hell, he may be X, Y and Z. He’s that vital a cog for a Texas team that has come nowhere close to playing at the level of last year’s cohesive, clutch team, which probably would have reached the Final Four in Houston had not Disu’s foot injury kept him out of the last two postseason games.

“That’s something that a lot of people are talking about,” Disu reminisced. “Hats off to Miami (which beat Texas in the Elite Eight). I do feel there was a couple of times or different ways that I could have impacted that game. So I think we probably would have been in the Final Four if I did play. I don’t want to throw my teammates under the bus. But I was playing at a pretty high level at that point.”

He still is, but someone else has to pick up the slack besides him and Abmas, a top eight scorer in college basketball history.

Hunter, given the fact he’s on the floor so much, needs to be that person.

More: Tyrese Hunter, Texas basketball close regular season with rout over Oklahoma

“When he plays great defense, he plays great on offense,” Disu said. “He gets out in transition. He gets his 3-pointers when he’s locked in defensively. That gets his competitive juices going and takes a lot of pressure off me and Max. Not only that, it’s fun to rest. I was a little tired today.”

Hunter is one of Texas' keys to the postseason

For the Sooners, they were just tired of keeping up with Hunter. He had seven assists and bombed away with 22 of his 30 points in the second half, including all three of his deep shots.

He’s also the point man on Texas’ defense and can fuel his own and his team’s offense with stops and steals like the three swipes he had that led to points. It was no coincidence that he was pacing the team to 25 fast-break points.

Aside from 3-pointers, there may be no more pivotal factor because it’s a slow death playing half-court offense in the Big 12.

“The hardest thing to do in this league is to go five on five against the defenses you face every night,” Terry said. “But I think we’ve played really good basketball the last five, six games.”

While Dillon Mitchell has hit the offensive skids of late and Cunningham, Horton and Chendall Weaver run hot and cold, Hunter could be the pivotal third threat. In Texas’ nine conference losses, Hunter has averaged just 8.7 points. In the wins, that bumps up to 12.7. Considering Terry’s club has lost four league games by five points or fewer, a bigger scoring output could have meant a ton of difference.

Asked if he made Hunter an honorary senior on Saturday as motivation, Terry chuckled and said, “He played like one, didn’t he?”

He did indeed. He’ll be one next season if he chooses to return. His NBA options seem sorely limited. But he’s got more eligibility as a Longhorn or, God forbid, a transfer.

When he was asked point-blank where he’ll be in 2024-25, Hunter smiled a tight-lipped smile and said, “I’m worried about today, tomorrow and the next day after that.”

Smart answer.

‘Total Disgrace’: Anger, Frustration as Mass Heating Failures Across Russia Leave Thousands in the Cold

P ODOLSK, Moscow region – Residents throughout Russia affected by unprecedented winter heating outages in recent days have expressed their frustration and urged local authorities to restore heating in their homes.

In Podolsk, a town some 30 kilometers south of the capital Moscow, at least 149,000 residents — nearly half of its population — were left without heating when a heating main burst at a nearby private ammunition plant.

“It’s a total disgrace. There is no heating and no hot water. We have to sleep in sleeping bags,” Yuri, a local resident, told The Moscow Times.

“I have no words to describe how bad the situation is," said Yuri, who declined to provide his surname. "We have had no heating for almost six days."

Heating issues have affected residents in the Moscow region, where temperatures have plunged to as low as minus 20 degrees Celsius in the past week, as well as people in the Far East Primorye region , the cities of Moscow and St. Petersburg , Penza , the southern Voronezh and Volgograd regions and more.

In the Tver region, a group of residents filmed an appeal to President Vladimir Putin, saying that they “are freezing from the cold” in the village of Novozavidovsky.

“We're literally being killed by the cold,” a woman in the video said, adding that they have been sending requests to local authorities since September after their houses were connected to a boiler room whose power was reportedly insufficient.

“This is some kind of torture and extermination of the population 100 kilometers from Moscow,” she added.

Residents of the Moscow region town of Elektrostal lit a fire in the street to draw the authorities’ attention to the heating problem.

“It’s impossible to stay in our houses. We're freezing!” a group of women in the video said.

Suffering from subzero temperatures, residents are placing the blame on local authorities and utility services for failing to take necessary precautions and not taking action to resolve the situation.

“We are sending complaints everywhere but no one listens to us. We have portable heaters working in every room, but the temperature inside is still 10 degrees Celsius,” Yelena from Podolsk said.

“There is a clinic and a hospital, as well as kindergartens, where there is no heating. And we have no answers, no assistance, no explanation,” Yelena added.

Podolsk authorities opened temporary heating centers and declared a state of emergency.

Local authorities linked the heating problems to the fact that the town is heated by a boiler plant owned by the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant, a private ammunition factory and one of the largest weapon cartridge production enterprises in the country.

“The facility is under tight security conditions, which limits our ability to oversee winter preparations,” the Moscow region’s Vice Governor Yevgeny Khromushin said last week. “We were unaware of the problem for nearly a day.”

An unidentified Moscow region official and two senior executives at the plant were arrested on suspicion of providing unsafe services, Russia’s Investigative Committee, which probes major crimes, said in a statement Tuesday.

Investigators said that Podolsk’s deputy mayor was accused of misusing authority by issuing a readiness certificate for the boiler house at the plant.

In the neighboring Tver region, the authorities opened a criminal case over the laundering of over 84 million rubles ($938,993) in heating bills paid by residents, the Astra Telegram channel reported this week, citing unidentified sources. According to investigators, the heads of the local water intake and boiler house misappropriated the heating payments for personal use.

Reacting to the heating failures, Putin on Tuesday asked Emergency Situations Minister Alexander Kurenkov to provide heat and electricity to the affected residents.

The outages appear to be the latest effect of several decades of crumbling infrastructure in Russia which have been linked to endemic corruption and mismanagement.

The overall decay of Russia's municipal infrastructure surpassed 70% in 2022, the pro-Kremlin newspaper Izvestia reported .

According to Sergei Pakhomov, head of the State Duma’s Construction, Housing and Utilities Committee, water pipes that were 90 years old or even older were still in use as recently as two years ago in some cases.

Housing, utilities and communal services are a common source of problems for Russians during the winter.

In St. Petersburg, residents regularly complain about extensive ice coverage on city streets and sidewalks, with many people ending up in the hospital over the years due to slipping and falling accidents.

In the Siberian republic of Khakassia, two villages were left without electricity last month due to apparent issues with outdated communication systems.

In the winter of 2020, five people in the Perm region were killed after a pipe burst.

When asked about the latest heating outages, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov acknowledged the problems and linked them to poor municipal infrastructure, saying that people “had to endure a lot of inconvenience in the cold and without electricity.”

"Despite all the titanic efforts to update all housing and communal services systems, there's still a certain part that remains considerably deteriorated. These programs will continue, but it is impossible to update all pipes and all housing and communal services systems in 10-15 years,” Peskov said.

As for now, residents affected by heating issues appear to lack optimism that the problems will be solved efficiently.

"It's been a week since we've had heating, and the temperature in my apartment is around 11 degrees Celsius,” Podolsk resident Lidiya told The Moscow Times.

“Unfortunately, no one knows when it will be repaired,” she added.
