How do RC Sailboats work?

RC Sailboats work through radio control, which is a given considering the “RC” in the name, and a bit of skill. You need to steer, draw the sail, etc. Interestingly enough, it’s a lot like sailing a real sailboat, but you’re using a controller to do it.

This is where the skill part comes in. Drawing the sails, for example, requires timing and precision to ensure that you’re doing it properly. If you don’t, you face it sinking, should the model be a very extensive one, or not sailing properly at all.

Where can I race a RC Sailboat?

You can race a RC Sailboat virtually anywhere. Although, racing in the ocean may not be the best idea if you’re very invested, both emotionally and financially, in your boat.

This is where lines come in. A lot of users will have a line system to ensure that if there is a crash and their boat sinks, or whatever the case may be, they can still retrieve their vessel without actually having to go into the water.

Are there are RC Sailboats that use wind?

Yes! Some RC Sailboats do not use electricity or a motor as a source to run. Some only work with windy weather, but still require a controller for steering, drawing the sails, etc.

What happens when the wind stops?

Hej! Have you found something? I search for a rc sailboat that I can transport with my bicicle.

Hi Annette, I too am looking for a 1 meter or 3 foot sailboat. Had a “Tradewinds” that was 3 feet long and loved it! BUT, the 5 pound center board weight (I used BB’s) was hard to find…. Want to get one so it can be sailed in the pond/small lake outside. A friend got one too and we used to “race”. But, we had no buoys – there are usually two or three and depends on the size of the boat.

In the Chicago area, Wisconsin, Chicago, Indiana (Munster), Michigan, and Florida (about 20 miles from Orlando) – we were lucky and I was sailing anywhere from 13′ to 45′ boats. People that did not know me were freaked out when I could sail.

Another boat makes sense here. And, if I had two, then another person can sail too. And, I can make buoys that are needed to race boats. Hmm, that is a good idea.

I am a former professional licensed Captain, sailboat dealer and racer who is now landlocked. Looking to start RC sailing, but prefer to identify key class associations, publications and such information to make sure there is a strong RC class or one design to guide me. RC boats can be up to two feet long, so make sure to consider the journey to the water, too, especially if the boat you’re eyeing doesn’t come with a carrying case.

Weight and Speed

The RC boat’s weight helps determine how fast it can move. Heavier boats are better equipped to move at high speeds without capsizing, whereas lighter boats can be speedy using less power, a.k.a., slower acceleration. Think of it like torque on a car (or a full-sized boat, for that matter)—the more power the boat gets from the battery, electric, or gas motor, the faster it can accelerate.

Speed is also dependent on the type of hull—some boats are shaped for optimal turning and curves, while others are built for picking up speed while driving in a straight line.

RC speed boats are available from Tower Hobbies® in a variety of styles. Most come in the ready-to-run (RTR) completion level, factory assembled and equipped with a properly matched electric power system and radio. That makes many of them suitable for first-time as well as experienced remote control boat modelers.

If you’re new to the RC speed boat hobby, you might wonder just how fast an electric radio control boat can go. The speed depends to a great extent on the type of RC boat and the skill of its pilot. Top speeds generally start at around 20 MPH and go up from there. Ready-to-run RC speed boats from Pro Boat® can hit over 40 MPH out of the box. With modifications, they can reach well into the 50-60 MPH range. Run times usually average about ten minutes before a battery recharge is required.

Of course, the true speed potential and run time of any RC boat varies depending on its size, hull design, power system, and even the water conditions on a given day. An RC speed boat will travel much faster on a glassy surface than one with lots of chop. Some racing boat models equipped with efficient brushless power systems and LiPo batteries have top speed capabilities that exceed a stunning 100 MPH!

RC speed boats can be safely controlled from a distance of approximately 300 feet. That’s important to keep in mind so you don’t find yourself having to retrieve a boat model that’s sped out of radio control range.

RC speed boat power and run time

The fastest RC speed boats use brushless motors. These have more power and reach higher speeds than models with brushed motors, but they also require confident hands at the controls. You also need to consider whether going fast is more important than run time when choosing your electric RC speed boat. As a general rule, higher speeds mean shorter run times. Radio control speed boats moving at a brisk pace tend to use up power more quickly than slower ones. They have to be recharged more often to maintain their performance.

Using a motor, ESC, and battery combination that’s not properly matched can cause excessive heat and damage your RC boat. Always pay attention to the recommendations in the product manuals and on our web site. Since nearly all Tower Hobbies RC speed boats are ready to run (RTR), you can be confident that all of the components have been rigorously tested for compatibility and performance before they go into the box.

RC speed boat hull types

You can choose from several different hull types when shopping for an RC speed boat. Each type has distinctive looks and performance characteristics, so make your choice based on your own goals and desires.

The larger the hull, the more stable it will be in all water conditions. Hulls ranging from 20 to 30 inches long can achieve moderately high speeds but require a surface with nearly glass-like smoothness. Hulls exceeding 34 inches long are better able to handle more chop and uneven water conditions.

The most common RC speed boat hull is the mono hull. It consists of a single hull that’s usually formed in a deep or shallow “V” shape. Examples of this type available from Tower Hobbies include the 26” long Pro Boat Recoil® 2 and 36” long Sonicwake® V2 . Mono hulls are easy to set up and offer excellent handling in rough water, at the sacrifice of some speed.

A catamaran or “cat” RC speed boat hull consists of two outer sponsons with a tunnel in the center. This design improves speed and handling and is also good in rough conditions. The 24” long Pro Boat Blackjack™ and 36” long Miss GEICO Zelos® are both examples of catamaran RC speed boats.

Hydroplane RC speed boats, such as the 30” long Pro Boat UL-19 , are designed to go fast while making turns in a single direction. In radio control boat racing, it’s common to race in clockwise laps. A turn fin on the hydroplane’s right-hand sponson holds the inner right sponson tight to the water in right turns. The hydroplane hull increases speed but is less proficient in rough water.

OK, the first thing to point out is that Blomiky’s F1 speedboat comes with two bonus batteries. That’s three batteries including the one in the model. This alone makes it an excellent value RC powerboat.

Blomiky F1 RC high-speed boat provides up to 20 minutes playing time with its three batteries. You must remember to let the motor cool down for a few minutes after swapping the batteries. The maker’s suggested age for racing this powerboat is 12+ years. I think it has a much younger appeal providing the children are under supervision. It’s so easy to operate even at the toddler level.

The toy has a powerful 280 motor that can drive it to a top speed of over 12mph in ideal conditions. That may not sound much, but it’s as fast as hell on the water. And the 50-meter range is more than adequate for a lightweight RC speedboat like this one. The Blomiky F1 is an excellent choice for younger kids who want to try RC powerboat racing for the first time.

It’s not fair to nitpick considering the low cost and extra batteries that come with this toy RC boat. There is a couple of cons that needs pointing out, though. One is the long charging time. Three hours seems extreme for such a small setup. The other is the scant user manual. It looks like a typical case of a poor Chinese-to-English translation. Alas, that’s a common issue with cheaper RC models.

The FeiLun FT012 is novice-friendly,but it won’t suit all. Most kids like to drive their boats fast on the water, but there’s fast, and there’s insanely fast. This mini beast fits into the latter category.

It’s easy to go flat out in a straight line. It’s not so easy when you need to perform other moves at high speeds. That’s where the real skill comes in. Those who can control this powerboat are sure to be the center of attention and envy. Seriously, there’s not much out there in this price category that offers so much. You get a 28mph speedboat with a fine-adjustment gear and a triple-covered cabin.

It’s good to know the boat has full protection from the water when it capsizes. The efficient self-righting function flips it back up in the blink of an eye. The FT012 also has an effective water cooling system. Water cooling helps to prevent the powerful brushless motors from overheating and prolongs running time. Brushless motors are notably superior compared to their brushed counterparts.

It’s a shame that such a glowing review must end with the usual RC speedboat disappointments. The running time of the FeiLun FT012 is a miserable 6-minutes top. The long charging time is equally disappointing at 150+ minutes or 2.5 hours.

The nation’s first all-electric tug boat has docked at the Port of San Diego and expects to begin emissions-free operations in about a month.

Operated by Crowley Maritime Corporation , the 82-foot eWolf will escort ships entering and leaving the Tenth Avenue Marine Terminal using electric power instead of diesel fuel, helping slash greenhouse gas emissions at the port and its neighbors in Barrio Logan and National City.

“This is a big deal,” said port chairman Frank Urtasun at a news conference Monday. “This is new technology.”

Capable of speeds of up to 12 knots, the eWolf is powered by a 6.2 megawatt-hour main propulsion battery and two electric drives. The tug has thrust — also known as bollard pull in the parlance of the shipping industry — of 76.8 short tons, which is more powerful than the diesel-powered counterparts at the port.

Constructed in Alabama, the eWolf is equipped with two small generators for emergency use that allow the boat to travel longer distances at a reduced speed.

“Like an electric car, you step on the gas and it jumps,” said Paul Manzi, vice president of Crowley Shipping, based in Jacksonville, Fla. “All of the attributes that you have with an electric motor operation in a car or in an electric truck, you see here in the (eWolf) at massive scale. And it’s extremely quiet so when it pulls away from the dock you literally won’t hear any noise.”

The tug boat’s electricity will come from a charging station that is part of a microgrid facility equipped with two energy storage containers. Battery modules in each container have storage capacity of nearly 1.5 megawatt-hours.

Interconnected with the help of San Diego Gas & Electric, the charging station at the port is designed to allow the vessel to recharge quickly and reduce peak loads on the electric grid.

Operators plan to charge the eWolf overnight so it can perform its chores during daytime hours.

“This technology has individually been around for a while, but it hasn’t necessarily been integrated and optimized to all work together — and that’s kind of our role,” said Bruce Strupp, vice president at ABB Marine & Ports , the company that designed the boat’s propulsion system. “Some of the technology is our technology, some of it’s third-party technology, but we integrate it all together.”

The electric tug boat is expected to begin commercial operations at the port in mid- to late-April, depending on the completion of the charging station.

Officials at Crowley did not release the eWolf’s price tag Monday, saying only that it cost about twice as much as a conventional diesel-powered tug boat of comparable size.

But, Manzi said, the company expects the eWolf’s maintenance and operating costs will be “dramatically lower” than what’s spent on a diesel-powered tug boat because the electric model has fewer moving parts.

The entire project — the vessel as well as the charging station — received four grants that added up to $13.67 million, with two grants of $10.9 million from the San Diego Air Pollution Control District, one grant of just over $2 million from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and $750,000 from the federal government’s Maritime Administration.

In 2020, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed an executive order that directed state agencies to transition off-road vehicles — including tug boats — and equipment to 100 percent zero emissions by 2035.

By replacing one of the port’s diesel-powered tugs, the eWolf is expected to eliminate the consumption of about 35,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. In its first 10 years of use, the electric tug boat is expected to reduce about 3,100 metric tons of carbon dioxide from the port and its surrounding areas such as Barrio Logan and National City.

“We’re trying to be good neighbors and trying to be able to help to reduce emissions here to help the electrification movement,” Urtasun said, adding that the port has spent about $130 million on various electrification projects.

Last year, the Port of San Diego became the first in North America to install a pair of all-electric cranes to load and off-load heavy cargo. Each 262 feet high, the cranes replaced an older crane that ran on diesel fuel. Together, the cranes expect to help the port reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 47 metric tons per year.

Sergiev Posad is situated about 75 km northeast of Moscow. The town grew in the 15th century around one of the greatest of Russian monasteries, the Trinity Lavra established by St. Sergius of Radonezh, today is one of the largest monasteries in Russia.

Sergiev Posad also has a long history of toy-making and is considered to be the capital of the toy kingdom. The Russian matryoshka known all over the world was born here. It seems only fitting that the town should claim to its fame a tiny museum, one which is home to a collection of rare toys, some of which date back to Imperial Russia and the last Russian Imperial family.

The Art and Pedagogical Toy Museum is a unique repository of historic treasures, founded in Moscow in 1918 by artist, collector, museum activist Nikolai Dmitrievich Bartram (1873-1931). With 100,000 items, the museum boasts one of the largest and most unique collections of toys in Russia.

In 1918 Bartram opened a toy museum in his four-room Moscow apartment located on Smolensk Boulevard and gradually enriched his collection with toys and children's items from the noble estates nationalized under the new Bolshevik regime. Bartram also managed to gather an impressive collection of children's portraits of 17th - 19th centuries. In 1931, the Toy Museum was transferred from Moscow to the town of Zagorsk (Sergiev Posad),

The pride of the museum is a collection of toys of the five children of the last Russian emperor Nicholas ii, which miraculously survived revolution and war. Among these are a collection of porcelain dolls, once owned by the grand duchesses Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia. Many of these works of art were specially made by Western European and Russian firms abroad for Their Imperial Highnesses in the early twentieth century.

In 2000, the State Historical Museum in Moscow hosted an exhibition of some 400 items, including the toys of the children of Emperor Nicholas II from the collections of the Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad. They produced a magnificently illustrated exhibition catalogue (photo above left). The 144-page catalogue (published in Russian) featured more than 200 colour and black-and-white photographs of the exhibits, which included the children’s toys, dolls, books and games as well as their clothes (the grand duchesses dresses and the tsesarevich Alexei’s uniforms), and other personal items such as porcelain, furniture, letters, drawings and paintings made by the children, portraits, photographs and more. The exhibition ran from December 29, 2000 - March 31, 2001. Shortly after the close of the exhibition I was able to import a quantity of these catalogues and offered for sale in the Royal Russia Bookshop. This title is now long out-of-print, yet still highly sought after by Romanovphiles.

In June 2011, the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo hosted the exhibition In the Children's Rooms of the Alexander Palace . Set out in the former rooms of the last tsar's children on the second floor of the Alexander Palace, the exhibition featured over 200 items, including toys, dolls, puppets, and other personal items belonging to Nicholas II’s children, many of them on loan from the Toy Museum in Sergiev Posad. A small 36-page catalogue (published in Russian) was also producted (photo above right).

Sergiev Posad is an easy day trip from Moscow. The Toy Museum is situated at pr. Krasnoy Armii, 123, a short walk from the monastery.

• The Palm Beach International Boat Show kicks off later this week.
• Eight megayachts are expected to be on display for would-be buyers and charter customers.
• These are the show's biggest yachts — and how many millions of dollars they are going for.

The Palm Beach International Boat Show — the yacht world's flashiest event stateside — is returning this year with over 800 boats for both deep-pocked potential owners and window shoppers to peruse.

While it's impossible to know what exactly will be on display until the show begins on Thursday, it's expected that eight megayachts — generally defined as ships over 60 meters long — will be docked at the show and at nearby marinas like the Rybovich Marina in the ritzy Florida town.

Some of these are for sale at eye-popping prices, but others are available to if in case you fancy living like a billionaire for a week or two this summer (and if you have six figures to spare on a vacation).

These are the eight biggest yachts that will be at the Palm Beach International Boat Show and nearby marinas, in size order.

Nero: 90.1 meters

Price: From $497,000 a week (charter)

Standout features: Pizza ovens, beauty salon, massage room, resistance pool

Reportedly owned by Irish billionaire Denis O'Brien, Nero is modeled after J.P. Morgan's 1930s ship , and was built in 2007 and updated in 2021.

She now boasts a gym on her sundeck with multiple cardio machines and a beauty salon, and has an on-board beautician for manicure, pedicure, hair, and massage needs. There's also an upgraded movie theater, two new pizza ovens, and both a pool and a jacuzzi.

For those who want to go overboard, she has more than a dozen toys, including a waterslide, Jet Ski, and flyboard.

Victorious: 85 meters

Price: From $876,600 a week in the summer and $950,000 a week in the winter

Standout features: Hammam (Turkish bath), wine cellar, wood-burning fireplace, children's playroom

Victorious brings a party vibe to the yacht show. With a beach club on board, a wine cellar, a cigar clubroom , multiple bars, and a lounge with a piano, the vessel is made for entertaining. Plus, there's a playroom and movie theater to entertain the kids.

For tamer charter clients, Victorious has a suite of wellness features such as a gym, massage room, beauty salon and hammam, or Turkish bath — perhaps a custom request of her owner, Turkish businessman Vural Ak.

She also boasts a treasure trove of water toys, including Jet Skis, jetsurfs, inflatable kayaks, and scuba equipment.

Casino Royale: 72 meters

Special Features: Infinity pool, helipad, private jacuzzi

Purchased and refitted by car dealer magnate John Staluppi last year, Casino Royale is the latest of his James Bond-inspired yachts (he's also owned an Octopussy and a Skyfall, among others).

Casino Royale has a helipad that turns into a dancefloor, an infinity pool, and a wellness center with a gym and sauna. The owner's cabin has its own deck, which features a private bar and jacuzzi.

However, the boat's price isn't listed, and while she's not necessarily officially for sale, that might change depending on who's prepared to buy, Mr. Bond.

Talisman C: 70.6 meters

Price: $60 million (or from $567,000 a week to charter)

Special features: Massage and beauty room, private library

Likely the largest yacht for sale (not just charter) at the show, the Talisman C is a 2011 six-bedroom boat. The owner's cabin comes with an en suite bathroom, dressing room, private library, and crystal chandeliers.

Amenities include a gym, a beauty room, oversized jacuzzi, and a fully equipped bar. Her crew of 19 includes a trained masseuse, and the toy room comes equipped with a wakeboard, eFoil , and WaveRunners.

Joy: 70 meters

Price: From $650,000 a week

Special features: Disco club, basketball court, onboard fitness instructor

Superyacht Joy testifies to the fact that owners want as many on-board experiences as they can get.

There's an expansive suite of fitness features, including a basketball court (don't shoot that hoop too hard!), a personal trainer on staff, boxing equipment, and a handful of machines. For post-workout winddowns, there's a spa with a steam room and onboard masseuse. And for entertainment, there's both an outdoor and indoor cinema, and a disco club.

Triumph: 65.4 meters

Price: From $707,600 a week in the summer and $650,000 a week in the winter

Special features: Sauna, helipad, banana boat

This 2021 superyacht is named after Triumph motorcycles — a reported favorite of her rumored owner, British businessman Chris Dawson — and even has one on display as an art piece in the upper deck's lounge. The primary suite is 1,400 square feet and has its own study , and there's a sauna, an indoor-outdoor gym, a helipad, and a massage room spread among her six decks.

She boasts an "armada of water toys," including two kinds of Jet Skis, electric water bikes, and a banana boat.

Seanna: 64.5 meters

Price: $54,000,000 (or from $462,000 a week to charter)

Special features: marble foyer, movie room, sundeck pool

The recently refurbished Seanna is available for sale and charter.

Her indoor-outdoor gym is on sea level so that passengers can take a dip after a session with the onboard personal trainer. There's also a sundeck pool, a helipad, a two-room massage facility, and, for the more cerebral guests, a library with an electric fireplace.

There are a number of toys on board, including a popular water trampoline and two WaveRunners.

Come Together: 60 meters

Price: $65,000,000

Special Features: DJ and videographer on board, ice bath, sauna

Next-to-new yacht Come Together is looking for a new owner after doing charters during the 2023 season.

The Beatles' influence is evident beyond the yacht's name, with guitars dotting the sky lounge and a crewmember who doubles as a DJ. There's also an outdoor cinema and bar for entertainment and an ice bath and sauna for the day after the party. The owner's suite has a private study and lounge, and each guest cabin has its own ensuite.

The sale includes a number of toys, like Jet Skis, kayaks, and Seabobs.

Audi is the latest automaker to reveal plans for a lower-cost EV

Audi is joining the race as automakers gear up to introduce new, lower-cost EV models. The new entry-level EV will sit below the Q4 e-tron, which starts at just over $50,000.

Audi plots a new lower-cost EV, an electric A3 or Q3

After unveiling the new Q6 e-tron this week, its next-gen premium mid-size electric SUV, Audi, is planning a smaller, lower-cost EV.

The Q6 e-tron is the “start of an extensive product initiative,” according to CEO Gernot Döllner. “Despite the recent public debate, there is no doubt the future of the car is electric,” Audi’s boss explained.

“At Audi, we will electrify all core segments by 2027 and have defined a fully electric target portfolio.”

Döllner, who took over for Markus Duesmann in September, said the company is accelerating development on a new entry-level electric car that will be the electric equivalent to the A3 or Q3.

After retiring the A1 and Q2, the A3 and Q3 are Audi’s smallest models. Döllner said the luxury brand is launching an “additional electric model below the Q4 E-tron,” according to Autocar .

“It will be a wonderful, unique independent vehicle concept,” produced in Ingolstadt alongside the new Q6 e-tron.

Döllner didn’t give up any details, but given Audi’s preference toward SUVs, the entry-level EV could take more of a crossover-like design as a sibling to the Q3. The report notes that ex-tech chief Oliver Hoffman claimed Volkswagen’s MEB platform would underpin the EV rather than the new PPE powering the Q6 E-tron.

Audi’s boss said a “final decision on which platform we will use has not been taken,” suggesting it could change. The new electric car is expected to launch in 2027.

The race for more affordable EVs

The new lower-cost Audi EV is “not a four-metre car,” according to Döllner. “We won’t have a successor for the A1 or Q2, not a direct successor. But with the model below [the] Q4 in the [A3] segment, that will be definitely our entry-level car.”

Audi’s latest comments come as several automakers have made similar commitments recently.

Ford is shifting its plans to smaller, more affordable EVs. The American automaker is developing a new low-cost EV platform to underpin a smaller electric pickup and SUV.

According to Bloomberg Businessweek , Ford’s “skunk works” team working on the platform is led by Alan Clarke, who led engineering on the Tesla Model Y.

Sources familiar with the matter say the first model will launch in 2026 with starting prices around $25,000.

Tesla is also planning to launch its next-gen EV , with starting prices around $25,000. Although initial plans called for the EV to be built at Gigafactory Mexico, CEO Elon Musk confirmed it will be built in Texas.

American EV startup Rivian shook the internet after revealing the smaller, more affordable R2 , which will start at $45,000. CEO RJ Scaringe unveiled an even smaller and cheaper R3 electric crossover.

Rivian has already confirmed that the R2 will launch in Europe as it expands overseas. According to Scaringe, the EV is already seeing demand, with over 68,000 reservations in under 24 hours.

Audi’s parent company, Volkswagen, announced it aims to begin producing its most affordable ID.1 electric car in 2027, starting at 20,000 euros ($21,700). VW brand leader Thomas Shafer said the ID.1 will offer “affordable electric mobility for everyone.” It will follow the ID.2 , revealed as a concept last March.

Based on a new entry-level version of the MEB platform, the ID.2 will start under 25,000 euros ($27,000) with 279 miles range.

VW’s spokesperson for Design, Stepan Rehahk, posted a teaser of the ID.2 SUV , the affordable EVs bigger sibling.

Kia is also planning a series of low-cost models . Its entry-level EV3, starting at $30,000, is expected to launch by the end of the year. The EV4, Kia’s entry-level electric sedan, will follow next year, with starting prices expected around $35,000.

And this just scratches the surface. Automakers and startups from around the globe are racing to introduce lower-priced EVs as demand for affordable options builds.

The rush to introduce more affordable EVs comes as low-cost automakers like China’s BYD continue expanding overseas.

Electric cars pushed China past Japan to become the leading export nation for the first time last year. BYD just expanded its footprint in Europe by launching its best-selling Atto 3 and Seal EV in Greece.

The global EV leader plans to more than triple its share of the European EV market before it even begins production in the region. BYD will start building EVs and batteries in Hungary in 2026, enabling faster deliveries at a lower cost.

Although BYD’s Atto 3 (Yuan Plus) starts at just $16,644 (119,800 yuan) in China, it costs around $40,000 (37,990 euros) in Europe. Once production begins, BYD looks to change that.

Legacy automakers, now Audi included, are rushing to compete with plans to launch their own lower-cost EVs.
