About the club.

The Richland Yacht Club is privileged to be situated at Columbia Point on the beautiful Columbia River in Eastern Washington State. To the north of us, the Hanford Reach has been designated a national monument and abounds in natural scenery and wildlife. To the south of us, the Yakima River empties into the Columbia River at a delta. A few miles farther downstream the Snake River feeds into the Columbia River at Sacajawea Park on the trail taken by the Lewis & Clark on their Corps of Discovery expedition. The Tri-Cities of Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco is a vibrant and growing community in the heart of Washington wine country with plenty of lodging, restaurants, shopping, and golf courses. We welcome you to visit us when you are in the area and see why we love it here in the Tri-Cities.

RYC is a social club with a fully owned clubhouse with first class amenities and a guest dock. There are weekly potluck BBQs, cruises by water and land, numerous annual events, and lots of camaraderie. Other benefits include:

Welcome to The Semiahmoo Yacht Club!

We are one of the longest standing clubs in the Pacific Northwest established in 1981. We hail from the city of Blaine, in the northwest corner of Washington state, at the doorstep of some of the most outstanding cruising waters on the planet.

Our mission is to promote the sport of recreational boating, water safety, facilities improvement and good fellowship and sportsmanship with members, friends and the public. Members are spread throughout the  USA, including Alaska and Hawaii, the east coast, California and Canada including the Greater Vancouver area and Vancouver Island .   Look at the news section below to see what we have been up to. Community support is very important to our members.

We welcome new members into our club.   We offer a great schedule of  land and sea events that we have planned.  The experience level of our membership offers new members a knowledge base to help if you are new boaters to the region. We offer one of the best reciprocal programs around which allows our members to visit many beautiful destinations. There are many yacht clubs located throughout Washington state. Some of the most popular clubs include:

1. Seattle Yacht Club

The Seattle Yacht Club is one of the most prestigious yacht clubs in Washington state. Founded in 1892, the club has a rich history and tradition of excellence. The club offers members access to two marinas, a clubhouse, and a range of services and amenities.

2. Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle

The Corinthian Yacht Club of Seattle is another popular club for boaters in Washington state. Founded in 1959, the club offers a range of sailing and social activities for members, including yacht racing, cruising, and social events.

3. Tacoma Yacht Club

Club Ratings

WYC relies on a “Ratings” system which specifies under what conditions members may checkout certain sailboats . This system is implemented to ensure that members are qualified to sail, will not damage club equipment, and will remain safe out on the water.

Rating Tests

To obtain a rating, a WYC member must pass both a  Written  and a  Practical  ( “On-the-Water” ) test before receiving their rating.  The order you complete these exams  does not matter , and if you fail you may retake the tests. 

Please  Note:  The information detailed below covers the vast majority of WYC ratings, however a few other ratings (such as Keelboats and Sailboards — for windsurfers) have different Written Tests and Practical Tests which are more relevant to those particular boats. 

Practical Test

Written test.

For the Practical Test, students will have to demonstrate safe and competent handling of the boat while performing the following tasks/maneuvers:

There’s one Written Test that covers all Novice & Intermediate ratings, and another that covers Skipper ratings. The Written Test is based off of the WYC Sailing Guide  and covers concepts including (but not limited to):

• Demonstrate proper boat check out procedures.
• Correctly rig and de-rig the boat from memory.
• Complete 3 tacks and 3 jibes.
• Complete a Man-Overboard drill — this involves recovering a life jacket using the proper technique. 
• Complete a Wet Capsize Recovery — You must capsize the boat, get in the water, and then right the boat in the proper manner — you will get wet ! 
• Demonstrate proper docking of the boat.
• Club policies
• Sailing maneuvers (tacking/jibing, docking, man-overboard, etc.)
• Sailing hazards & rights-of-way
• Parts of a sailboat/sailing vocabulary

Taking a Test

Typically, there are a few opportunities every week for members to test for their ratings. To take these tests you can: 

• Sign up for a lesson and take the test with an Instructor. (Taking a lesson is not required for a rating)
• Come to Supervised Sailing (if a Ratings Examiner or Chief is present you may test).
• Attend WYC Office Hours with the Program Director (Written Test only) . 
• Schedule an appointment with a Ratings Examiner or Chief. This can done be via email or through our Discord server.

Ratings Explained

One example of a WYC rating is the “ Single-Handed Novice .” 

– The first half refers to what boat  you can sail — with the most common categories being: 1) “Single-Handed (SH)” (one person boats), 2) “Double-Handed (DH)” (two person boats), 3) “Sailboard” (windsurfing), 4) “Catamaran” (boats with two hulls), and 5) “Keelboats” (the large, multi-person boats). 

– The second half refers to what wind speeds you can sail — and is broken down into 3 categories: 1) “Novice” (light winds; 1-6 knots), 2) “Intermediate” (moderate winds; 7-15 knots), and 3) “Skipper” (high winds; 16+ knots). Note:  1 knot is ~1.15 mph.

– Ratings also determine where  you are allowed to sail with Novice/Intermediate ratings being restricted to Union Bay (near the WAC), and Skipper ratings able to sail the interconnected waters east of the Aurora Bridge.

– All Novice ratings  (except Keelboat Novice) expire within 6 months  — so it is important to keep practicing and test for your intermediate after receiving your first rating.

– For Double-Handed  ratings, your crew do not need to have a rating and/or attempt to receive one. However, they should have sufficient sailing skill (to remain safe). As the skipper, you will drive the boat, perform maneuvers, and ensure good communication by saying commands loud enough so both crew and the rating examiner can hear them.

Bravo Rating

Boats unlocked:   Bravo

Where you can sail: Union Bay (near WAC)

When you can sail: 0 to 7 knots of wind. *Expires after 6 months.

Single-Handed Novice

Boats unlocked:   Bravo , Laser ( this rating is more common as it also encompasses the rights of the Bravo rating )

Where you can sail:   Union Bay (near WAC)

Single-Handed Intermediate

Boats unlocked:   Bravo , Laser

When you can sail: Up to 15 knots of wind.

Single-Handed Skipper

Where you can sail:   Interconnecting waters east of the Aurora Bridge

When you can sail:  In all safe wind conditions. 

Double-Handed Novice

Boats unlocked:   FJ , Laser II , Flying Scot, RS Vision

Double-Handed Intermediate

Boats unlocked:   FJ , Laser II , J22 , Ensigns , Flying Scot, and RS Vision.   With a   Performance Specialty Rig Rating  ( see Specialty ), the following boats may also be sailed:   470 , Laser II ,   International 505 , and  International 14 .

When you can sail: Up to 15 knots of wind.

Lake Sailor Specialty

The Lake Sailor Specialty Rating may be given to a member holding a Double-Handed Intermediate Rating who has displayed additional  skill and judgment in sailing Daysailers.

Where you can sail:   Union Bay (near WAC) and any Daysailer ( J22 , Ensign , Flying Scot ) in Lake Washington – from Sail Sand Point to the 520 bridge.

Double -Handed Skipper

Boats unlocked:   FJ , Laser II , J22 ,  Ensigns, Flying Scot, and RS Vision. With a Performance Specialty Rig Rating ( see Specialty ), the following boats may also be sailed:   470 , International 505 , and  International 14 .

Windsurfing Novice

Boards unlocked:   Any club sailboard .

Where you can sail:  Union Bay (near WAC) or Sail Sand Point (near the public beach)

Windsurfing Intermediate

Where you can sail:   Union Bay (near WAC) or Sail Sand Point (near the public beach)

Windsurfing Skipper

Boards unlocked:  Any club sailboard .

Where you can sail:   Union Bay (near WAC) and in Lake Washington – from Sail Sand Point to the 520 bridge.  

When you can sail:  In all safe wind conditions.

Catamaran Novice

Boats unlocked:   Hobie 16, Dart 16

Catamaran  Intermediate

Boats unlocked: Hobie 16 and Dart 16 . With a Big Catamaran Specialty Rig Rating ( see Specialty ), Hobie SX18 ,  and Hobie 21

Catamaran  Skipper

Boats unlocked: Hobie 16 and Dart 16 . With a Big Catamaran Specialty Rig Rating ( see Specialty ), Hobie SX18 and Hobie 21.

Keelboat Novice

Boats unlocked : J22 (with an outboard motor) , Santana 22 , Rascal ,  Charlotte , Deception

When/Where you can sail: Reservations can be made with the Keelboat Calendar . Keelboats may be sailed in all winds in the i nterconnecting waters east of the Aurora Bridge. Passage under the floating I90 bridge between the west shore of Mercer Island and east shore of Seattle is prohibited.

Keelboat Skipper

Boats unlocked: J22 (with an outboard motor), Santana 22 , Rascal ,  Charlotte , Deception ,  Nightshade , Talaria

Ithaka Skipper

Boats unlocked: Ithaka (Swan 441) . * See WYC Policies: Requires nomination of existing Ithaka Skipper and 2/3 majority vote at WYC General meeting.

When/Where you can sail:   All winds and waters WYC carries insurance for. Passage under the floating I90 bridge between the west shore of Mercer Island and east shore of Seattle is prohibited.

Whaler Rating

Boats unlocked: Whaler

Requirements: Meet the requirements to operate a motor-powered vessel in Washington by obtaining a Boater Education Card from Washington State Parks and Recreation.

Specialty Rig Ratings

Rig ratings are additional ratings to ensure members properly understand how to rig/derig and operate the more complex boats within WYC’s fleet. The following boats have additional rig ratings:

• Big Catamarans (> 16 feet):   Hobie SX18 , Hobie 20 , Hobie 21
• Inboard Keelboats: Keelboats that are 27+ feet in length and have inboard engines, including: Nightshade , Talaria
• Performance Boats: These include the   470 ,   International 505 , and   International 14

Seattle Yacht Club

SEATTLE YACHT CLUB

Founded in 1982, Seattle Yacht Club is the oldest yacht club in Washington state and one of the earliest yacht clubs on the west coast. SYC facilities include the historic main station on Portage Bay in Seattle as well as ten outstations throughout Puget Sound, San Juan Islands, Gulf Islands and the Straight of Georgia. As the club expanded throughout the years, by construction and sometimes by acquiring land or existing structures; it became apparent that documentation for insurance, maintenance and long-term planning was needed. JOAP was brought on board to develop current three-dimensional BIM models, sets of floor plans and elevations for the main station and all ten outstations. A total of 40 existing structures were researched, documented and drawn in order to provide an electronic record that could be used to support the decision making process as the club moves into the future.

Anacortes Yacht Club Opens May 1st, 2021

Welcome to anacortes yacht club.

Anacortes Yacht Club was founded in 1891 and is the second oldest yacht club in Washington State.  Run entirely by volunteers, it is rich in maritime and civic activities. The Club House is open every Friday at 17:30 for members and guests, and we welcome visiting yacht club members from near and far. The facilities can be rented for that special occasion from family picnic to formal galas. Anacortes Yacht Club has a warm and welcoming membership, with many great events year-round. Members are a diverse group, from laid back cruising to serious racing, you'll fit right in.
