Marine Survey Options

A pre-purchase yacht survey, often simply referred to as a "marine survey" or "yacht survey," is a comprehensive inspection and evaluation of a yacht's condition and systems conducted by one of our qualified marine surveyors. This type of survey is typically requested by prospective buyers (or their agents) before purchasing a pre-owned yacht. Its purpose is to provide the buyer with a thorough assessment of the yacht's overall condition, including any potential issues, defects, or safety concerns.

A marine damage survey, is an assessment conducted by a one of our qualified marine surveyors to investigate and document damage or loss sustained by a vessel, its contents, or related maritime property. The survey is typically commissioned by insurance companies, boat owners, or other parties involved in maritime incidents to determine the extent of the damage, assess the cause, and establish the basis for insurance claims or legal proceedings.

New Yacht Comissioning Surveys

A new yacht commissioning survey, often referred to as a "new build survey" or "yacht commissioning inspection," is a thorough evaluation and inspection of a newly constructed yacht before it is delivered to the owner. This survey ensures that the yacht has been built to the specified design, quality standards, and safety regulations.

A yacht unloading survey, also known as a "discharge survey," is an inspection and assessment conducted when a yacht is being unloaded from a transport vessel (such as a cargo ship or yacht transport ship) to its final destination, often a marina or yacht club. This type of survey is essential to ensure that the yacht arrives at its destination in the same condition as it was loaded onto the transport vessel.

ACCEPTANCE SURVEY

A marine acceptance survey, often referred to as an "acceptance survey" or "acceptance inspection," is a specialized type of marine survey conducted by a marine surveyor or inspection agency on behalf of a shipowner, buyer, or charterer. This survey is typically performed when a vessel is delivered, purchased, or chartered, and its purpose is to ensure that the vessel meets certain contractual or regulatory requirements before it is accepted or taken into service

DAMAGE SURVEY

Refit Supervision

We are often called in to supervise and review major refitting jobs at yards throughout SE Asia. Most times this involves initial project specification, and periodic yard visits to ensure everything is going to plan, followed by a final inspection of the work when complete.

EXPERT WITNESS / LITIGATION SUPPORT

A marine surveyor can play a crucial role in litigation support related to maritime and marine-related legal disputes. The marine surveyor's expertise and technical knowledge make them valuable assets in providing objective assessments and evidence in court cases.

Electrical Systems Design and Integration

This critical aspect of vessel construction and fitting out often requires an experienced engineer to help with the design. Our Chief Surveyor has designed hundreds of vessel electrical systems, from power generation to battery storage. We can plan integrated NMEA 2000 networks that meet current and future vessel needs.

Sailboat Rigging Inspection

Sailboat rigging is normally surveyed from the deck, but (weather permitting) we now offer free drone-based visual rigging examination. Should you wish to have us ascend your mast(s), we are happy to go aloft and survey your rig firsthand for an additional fee.

Coating Systems Consulting and Inspection

This service is mostly utilized by metal boat owners but coating systems can be very expensive on high end yachts, and it pays to have an expert to ensure today’s advanced coatings are done right.

Ultrasonic Inspection (Hull Thickness)

This service is utilized by metal boat owners to have a thorough inspection of the metal hull for areas reduced by corrosion. We also measure to ensure build specification compliance, and repair yard compliance.

Often corrosion in metal hulls begin from the inside, in inaccessible areas, behind tanks or machinery. Ultrasonic hull inspection allows our surveyor to better find these pockets of hidden corrosion from the outside of the hull. It takes a very experiences surveyor to know where to measure and interpret the results to locate defects, we have done hundreds of boats and small ships, from steel sailboats to military vessels in the United States.

We use an Elcometer state of the art Material Thickness Gauge with Pulse-Echo and Echo-Echo modes, allowing us to accurately measure metal thickness with no coating removal.

I first visited Singapore in 1962 as a Cadet Officer onboard a merchant ship. I loved the sea and also went sailing yachts when I was on leave. I later sailed as Captain of ships and came ashore to handle shipping problems.

During a sabbatical in 1979 I purchased a yacht in California and sailed, via Panama, to England. Thereafter I flew to Singapore to work with a Singapore Shipping Agency for 5 months - during which time I joined Changi Sailing Club, the Company shipped my yacht to Singapore - and I stayed for another 5 years.

In 1986/87 I went on a 22 month, 29,996 mile sail on my yacht “Rumbottle” after which I returned to Singapore and set up my own Company, Maritime Claims & Services Pte Ltd. Since then I have been handling a variety of matters for Owners, Charterers, P&I Clubs, H&M Insurance & various Governments. I was engaged in exciting jobs including salvage, major oil spills (one of 10,500mt of heavy oil in Korea and another for over 1,000mt in Indonesia), fires, accidents and deaths. I was also appointed and acted as an Arbitrator in Singapore on Shipping matters and was Expert Witness in many legal cases.

I was approached by Yachting Underwriters and set up another Company, Yacht Surveys & Services Pte Ltd, to assist with yachting matters. I am still very much involved with this company but also assist my 6 person team in Maritime Claims & Services whenever necessary….fortunately not to much these days as they’re all former Masters and Chief Engineers who don’t need much help.

I have served at Chairman of the Mission to Seafarers and am still on their committee. I also sit on a panel with MPA and assist as much as I can with the safety of yachtsmen and pleasure boats in Singapore.

Basic Safety Training (BST)

Marine Training / STCW Courses / Basic Safety Training (BST)

The aim of the Basic Safety Training (BST) is to provide key safety and survival skills for personnel starting their career at sea. The course comprises of 4 core modules:

• Personal Survival Techniques  (A-VI/1-1); • Fire Prevention and Fire Fighting (A-VI/1-2); • Elementary First Aid  (A-VI/1-3); • Personal Safety and Social Responsibility  (A-VI/1-4); • Some centers also include Security Awareness Training for All Seafarers (STCW code Reg. A-VI/6-1) these days.

Course Content:

• Sea survival techniques including launch of life raft, use of safety equipment, swimming practices. • Ship fire prevention theory and practice with the use of different types of firefighting equipment and breathing apparatus. Self rescue from smoke filled spaces training. • First aid practices with the premium on CPR, various methods of bandaging, transportation of injured and emergency help without the required equipment or drugs. • Personal Safety and Social Responsibly module covers such issues as safety at the working space and accident prevention as well as emergency alarm raising and signaling. There is also set devoted to employee rights, working conditions and labor related regulations. • Where Security Awareness module is present in the syllabus it provides skills to recognize dangers and patterns that might threaten security of the vessel or the crew and familiarizes with response scenarios.

Target Audience:  Mandatory for all ranks.
