Below Deck Sailing Yacht Is The Office ‘s Unscripted Sister — Here’s Why

When I found myself tuning in to yet another season of another franchise of Below Deck , I had to wonder: Why am I so obsessed with watching people do their jobs, and badly at that?

All roads lead to The Office .

Bravo ‘s Below Deck Sailing Yacht,  which is currently airing Season 4 on Mondays at 8 pm, is simply The Office, if it were unscripted and on speed. It contains all the pillars of the successful workplace comedy: An inappropriate leader who makes off-color jokes (sorry, Captain Glenn, but it’s true); a never-ending assortment of unbelievable HR violations (when you live and work in the same place, things get muddy, fast !); awkward people performing their jobs poorly (there’s always a stew who simply doesn’t understand the hierarchy); and, of course, a couple of token sensible people (Daisy and Glenn are the boat’s Jim and Pam, minus the romance).

With all of that, plus incredibly high stakes as real money is being made, real clients are being served, and real pots of chili are being dropped thanks to unexpected swells, it’s just another iteration of everyone’s favorite NBC comedy!

But Below Deck even goes a step further: It uses the workplace comedy genre as a blueprint, before completely transforming it. Here, the actual workplace is not only a container for comedy; the workplace is the comedy, as the space inhabited by the cast becomes a character itself.

'The Office' and 'Below Deck Sailing Yacht'

Another layer? These employees never get to go home. Though we don’t often see The Office characters outside of Dunder Mifflin/related events, we know they are not trapped in the workplace. They theoretically have lives beyond our screens that add texture to their characters. On Below Deck , however, employees are constantly on the clock, sleeping in tight quarters and receiving wake-up calls from engine alarms or radio commands at any given moment. (Imagine getting a season-long slumber party between Michael and Dwight. What kind of storylines could have been invented if the two were forced to sleep on top of the printers after each day’s end? Whatever you’re picturing, know that’s what Below Deck promises and delivers season after season.)

So, if you liked The Office , it’s time to give its unofficial unscripted sister a watch.

How do you think Below Deck compares to your favorite workplace comedy? Let us know in the comments!

You should send this review to the WGA. I’m sure they’ll love to hear all the hard work put forth by their writers can be equaled by reality garbage.

So far the crew are doing great considering the ship can’t sail & the first group of people had an actual Karen on board.

I have watched all seasons of every Below Deck. Season 4 Below Deck Sailing Yacht is the most uninteresting season of all. The crew has been childish and they act unprofessional. The episodes are boring. Gary and Daisy and Colin act juvenile. You just may have run your course on the Sailing Yacht if these crew members return. Every other Below Deck held my attention and was fun. This season 4 I turn off halfway through. Sorry but any cache the show has had in the past has dissolved.

Somebody needs to kick the living sh– out of Gary.

Captain Glenn and the crew of the Parsifal III are back for another season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht . This time the yacht is setting sail in lovely Sardinia, Italy, and even though it's a beautiful location, don't expect calm seas. This season, anything can happen.

As the original Below Deck franchise wraps up its tenth season, Below Deck Sailing Yacht cruises into season 4 with the promise of picturesque landscapes and thrilling adventures, but the trailer hints at some trouble on board, and not just with the crew. Although, it looks like the Parsifal III has some challenges this season that puts Captain Glenn and the crew through their paces.

Here's everything we know about Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 4: "Lazy Daisy" "Capt. Glenn remains committed to improving the guest experience by insisting a stew go on all excursions. Daisy is frustrated after learning she’s a stew down while the deck team goofed off on the eFoils. Chef Ileisha’s perfectionism is thrown off when she faces her greatest fear in the galley and enlists Colin’s help. Gary claims his territory as First Mate both with the ladies and on deck as he sets his eyes on Mads knowing his deckhands are interested in the same girl."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 5: "Hate Me Tender" "Daisy is overwhelmed with the high-maintenance guests and struggles to ask for help, so a request from Gary sends her over the edge; when a guest injury occurs on the water toys, Capt. Glenn goes into high alert."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 6: "Clash & Burn" "In an effort to turn the charter around, Capt. Glenn takes the guests on an epic sail. Lucy makes a grave mistake to a charter guest’s garment. After Chef Ileisha continues to leave the guests waiting too long between courses, Capt. Glenn gives her honest feedback in the tip meeting that pushes Daisy's defensive buttons. Colin defends Capt. Glenn’s comments as feedback and not critique, which only heightens Daisy’s frustrations."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 7: "Smoke on the Water" "Another engine issue emerges, forcing Capt. Glenn to modify the plan and keep the returning guests entertained. With all the uncertainty going on in the engine room, Capt. Glenn takes control and points out the crews’ mistakes. Daisy and Colin make up after their fight as their relationship grows stronger. Daisy confronts Gary about Mads and claims he’s playing his usual games. Tired of the drama, Chase plans a night of drunk Twister and hosts a surprising yoga session. "

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 8: "Cheers to Boobies" "After Chase confides in Gary about Alex’s lackluster work ethic, Chase’s trust is broken when Gary tells Alex about their conversation. The crew pull off talent show #2 for the returning guests and surprise themselves with their interesting skills. Chase has a little too much to drink, and he upsets some of the crew, pushing Lucy to lose it and her chair at dinner. Daisy and Colin get closer than ever as they share an unexpected kiss."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 9: "Love Boat" "Glenn dresses up for the guests' theme night; he hopes his participation helps correct a jewelry theft hiccup and is on top of his crew to make sure the women have the best trip of their lives."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 10: "Loose Lips Sink Friendships" "The crew has the day off, and even Capt. Glenn recharges by enjoying Parsifal III all to himself and riding the eFoil; Colin saves the day clearing the clogged toilets, but he gets jammed up when his honest opinion strikes a chord."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 11: "Let Them Eat Cake" "Capt. Glenn notices the standards are slipping on Parsifal lll as the crew is exhausted with the mid-season blues. Distraught that Colin and Gary aren’t speaking, Daisy takes initiative and forces them to hash out their problems. Gary’s confusing behavior has Mads confessing her feelings to Alex. Colin tries to forgive Daisy’s discretions, but she adds insult to injury after she drunkenly confuses him for Gary. On charter, after anchoring in their first destination, Parsifal lll nearly drags into a neighboring boat."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 12: "T-Bone with Stakes" "Capt. Glenn notices the crew is slipping on service when a guest is injured, and interior doesn’t hear the walkie call forcing Capt. Glenn to up the guest maintenance standards onboard. After Alex and Mads confess their feelings from the start, Mads is torn between Alex and Gary. Shaken after a close T-Bone with a nearby boat, Gary is confused when his advances to Mads aren’t being reciprocated."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 13: "Hurricane Bonnie" "Captain Glenn reprimands the crew as recent slip-ups are directly affecting communication and morale; Daisy breaks down when she's proven wrong about the walkies not working; Chef Ileisha is determined to prove she can complete a 10-course dinner."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 14: "Boat Load of Throuples" "Capt. Glenn threatens to kick one of the 'throuple' charter guests off Parsifal during a drunken guest fight. Mads receives a wake-up call that prompts her to dismiss Gary’s apology attempt and more seriously consider Alex leaving Gary with a stomach full of regret. Unhappy with Gary, Alex and Colin decide to follow their hearts instead."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 episode 15: "Man Buns Has it Been Fun": "Proud of his team’s accomplishments during the final sail, Capt. Glenn believes his tough love made them all stronger. The crew celebrates their final night out and Daisy and Colin try to soak up every moment of it. Following tearless goodbyes, Capt. Glenn and Gary stay onboard Parsifal to pick up another charter season."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 cast

Captain Glenn Shepherd returns to helm the Parsifal III. This is his fourth season on the series, but he's no stranger to the ship. He's been helming the Parsifal III for over a decade.

Captain Glenn will be joined once again by Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher, first mate Gary King and engineer Colin MacRae.

New to the series are chef Ileisha Dell, stews Lucy Edmunds and Mads Herrera and deckhands Chase Lemacks and Alex Propson.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 plot

Bravo offered this synopsis of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 and it gives you a good sense of what's coming in the new season:

"Capt. Glenn and his comeback team Daisy Kelliher, Gary King and Colin MacRae resume their responsibilities aboard Parsifal III, along with new, dynamic crew members, as they set sail in Sardinia, Italy. Capt. Glenn realizes that his laid-back leadership style has allowed his crew to become too comfortable and starts taking charge of quality control in the interior department, much to Daisy's dismay.

"In the galley, Chef Ileisha’s cooking impresses the guests, but her indecisiveness and co-dependency lead to time-management issues between courses, which causes her to self-destruct. On deck, strong personalities collide, and a power struggle results in a near mutiny, as Gary clashes with his new overconfident deckhand, Chase.

"Two overlapping love triangles further complicate the dynamics on-board, and a shocking hookup puts Colin, Daisy and Gary’s friendship in jeopardy. With a near collision, fire, crew rebellion, gruesome guest injury and two different potentially season-ending engine failures, this is the most captivating and unpredictable season yet of Below Deck Sailing Yacht ."

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Recap: Kiss and Tell

Below deck sailing yacht.

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

Is it just me, or have almost all of the intense and dramatic moments teased so far been a letdown? We’re now five episodes in and all we’ve gotten is petty bickering, constant conversations about who likes who, and Gary being ickier than ever, none of which have led to anything substantial.

This episode opens with Gary and Mads still kissing in the Jacuzzi as Alex stumbles through the boat. Colin awakens to find him eating alone in the crew mess and asks if Gary, whom Alex calls “fucking Farquaad,” is “cutting your lunch.” “Leaving the girl you like in the hot tub with Gary is like waving a banana in front of a monkey and expecting him not to eat it,” Colin — the only person of sound mind on the boat — tells us.

The next morning, Lucy continues her streak of being a klutz by hitting her face on her bed’s guardrail. It’s the day before the third charter, so everyone’s recapping the previous night. Colin asks the guys if they hooked up with anyone, and Gary says he doesn’t remember. Chase, on the other hand, is “done with the lady situation” to avoid tension between him and Alex. Meanwhile, Alex worries his excessive drinking may have “fucked up [his] chances with Mads,” which may be true now but doesn’t matter in the long run because, remember, she has low standards.

Gary and Colin head outside to chat, and Gary says that “a man never tells his secrets” before admitting that he and Mads kissed but that he feels bad because the other guys like her. He has never been one to think first before acting. At the same time, Mads spills about her and “Gazza” to Lucy, who says it was “fucking obvious.” When asked if it was a good kiss, Mads says she “wished I made out with other people.”

At the preference sheet meeting, we learn the next primary is John Cerasani, a “serial entrepreneur” celebrating his new book with his girlfriend Natalia, daughter Anastasia, son Jacob, and friends TJ and Lauren. Ileisha is provided with a lengthy list of dietary restrictions, but she doesn’t seem overly stressed about it. Once that’s out of the way, Captain Glenn announces that a stew will accompany guests when leaving the boat from now on because it looks more professional. This frustrates Daisy, who believes it’s a waste of the interior’s time. “If I notice things that need to be adjusted, I’m going to challenge my team to make those adjustments,” Captain Glenn shares. Sure, but this is something that should’ve been discussed privately with Daisy rather than calling her out in front of her co-workers.

After that’s over, Gary attempts to chat with Mads about the makeout, and she brushes it off because she doesn’t feel like talking about it. “I had fun; I’m just not trying to start drama,” she tells him. Elsewhere on the boat, Colin and Daisy flirt while he fixes a broken drawer. Colin asks if she hooked up with someone, and Daisy says she’s “staying away from everyone.” Colin plans on doing the same because the “two young girls are too young,” and he isn’t attracted to them. Gary could never!

Gary then checks on the guys and pulls Alex aside to inform him about the Jacuzzi hookup. Gary adds that he’ll “back off” if Alex likes Mads, which he should’ve considered beforehand. Interestingly, he doesn’t extend the same courtesy to Chase, who told him he liked her. In a confessional, Alex, who thinks this was a “strange move,” shares his thoughts: “What do you want me to say, thanks for hooking up with the girl I like?” Gary’s shenanigans are starting to get old.

In the evening, while having drinks outside, we learn that Ileisha used to be a contortionist in a local circus growing up. She has lived so many lives. Mads then tells us that she only really smooched Gary because Alex was drunk and “a girl needs her needs met.” Fair. The following day, Gary tells Colin he thinks Mads only hooked up with him because, as Colin puts it, he was the “last man standing,” which is true. Oh, how the tables have turned!

Meanwhile, Chase is thrilled about being assigned anchor watch this charter because he needs a “break from Gary bitching about everything I do wrong.” He adds, “Distance makes the heart grow fonder.” I, too, welcome this break from their annoying drama.

The guests finally arrive, and it’s immediately clear that they’re a demanding bunch. Mads says that John radiates “high-school douchebag vibes,” and I couldn’t agree more. After Daisy shows them around, they head up to the flybridge to take in the view while enjoying Ileisha’s hors d’oeuvre and requesting countless drinks.

Captain Glenn tells Gary that a deckhand needs to drive the tender rather than towing it like usual, which introduces a new issue for him and Daisy to bicker about. Gary tells Daisy that a stew should learn how to drive the tender to help out, and Daisy is rightfully “flabbergasted” by the request. “I think Gary thinks I’m sexy when I’m angry,” she tells us before adding that she’s mad and currently  not  feeling sexy. Gary whines to Captain Glenn and Colin about how he always helps out the interior, but Daisy never returns the favor. Captain Glenn’s response: “Have you guys set a date for the wedding?”

Outside, John is showing off his cockiness as Anastasia records a video of him flaunting his chain necklace while saying, “I’m on a yacht, motherfucker!” Captain Glenn then captivates the guests with his sailing, which goes smoothly (sorry). Afterward, John really wants Captain Glenn to wear his chain for some reason, so he agrees and takes photos wearing it, which gets some laughs from Colin and Gary.

Throughout all this, the interior attempts to keep up with the guests’ constant requests. Daisy thinks the guests will “ask for everything under the sun,” and she’s right. “Nobody sees how many directions we’re being pulled in,” she expresses before mocking Gary’s request of having a stew drive the tender. Agreed, and I don’t like how Captain Glenn refrains from coming to the interior’s defense in situations like this one.

Once they drop anchor and the guests go out for water sports, Daisy starts planning the ’90s theme party they requested and suggests a Spice Girls–inspired crew performance. She asks Gary to be involved, and he agrees but complains about his doing her yet another favor. Babe, briefly having to entertain guests is  not  the same as asking a stew to stop working to drive a boat!

As Gary and Captain Glenn chat in the laz, Jacob, who was warned to keep a distance when using the eFoil, crashes into TJ. And with that, we have this season’s first guest injury, and it’s a bad one. TJ says he’s fine, but the gnarly gash on his head says otherwise. Captain Glenn calls a medic, who arrives shortly after and determines that TJ must go to the hospital. This kills the vibe and alters Ileisha’s original plan of having vegetarian dishes for dinner, but, as John decides, the night must go on.

At dinner, John thinks crew members should fill the empty seats at the table, and Jacob requests that Gary join them. Daisy is annoyed because she thinks “me serving Gary is a sick joke,” so she suggests that he be at dinner the following night. Is this going to be a recurring theme this season? Does the crew not already have enough on their plates that they have to add last-minute crew-guest meals to the list??

Next, the crew gets ready for the tacky theme party (which should be banned from the  BD -verse). Chase wears Daisy’s leopard-print dress, Mads sports an orange wig, and Gary wears a sports bra and short shorts because he’s Sporty Spice, though Chase says he’s “more like Old Spice or Hairy Spice.” Nothing about the décor for the evening — a depressing display of colorful lights and some balloons — feels reminiscent of the 1990s. Even I, someone who wasn’t alive in that decade, am aware of that. Without Gary’s hyper energy, the “performance” would’ve been even cringier. However, the guests are so preoccupied with TJ and Lauren, who have yet to return from shore, that they don’t notice the absence of the gelato station requested on their preference sheet.

The next morning, John grows more worried after waking up to find TJ and Lauren’s beds left untouched. His phone calls to TJ won’t go through, so Chase wakes up Captain Glenn to update him on the situation. But after being sent to voice-mail several times, John is able to get ahold of TJ, who says that he has yet to be seen by a doctor but will be “ready to rage” soon. Talk about an anticlimactic conclusion to a tense moment.

As TJ and Lauren return via water taxi, Alex and Lucy head to the beach to set up for a trip requested by the guests. It doesn’t take them long to get everything ready, so they’re left sitting on the beach doing nothing. Meanwhile, the guests are requesting things left and right, which makes Daisy feel “like I’m drowning” and unable to keep “things under control.” The episode ends with Daisy going to her room to presumably have a breakdown, and I feel awful for her. Based on next week’s preview — in which she cries at the tip meeting — it’ll only get worse.

Known for his cavalier attitude and playboy ways, Gary has caused quite a stir as he's moved through Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 , especially in his relationships with Daisy Kelliher and Colin MacRae.

After wading through the drama of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4's reunion, which saw Gary up against Daisy, Colin, and Mads Herrera as he tried to defend his actions, Gary has been taking some time away. For Gary, the accusations were difficult to broach as they've been following him for the past few seasons. While Below Deck Sailing Yacht touched on Gary's behavior, the series had never been clear about his actions until the most recent season. Gary's life after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 has been changing, and many are looking to keep up with him.

Gary Appeared On An Episode Of Project Runway

After a difficult season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht, Gary was excited to appear on an episode of Project Runway alongside several other Below Deck personalities including Daisy and Below Deck Down Under 's Aesha Scott . Gary appeared in a crossover episode of the reality competition series that asked its contestants to recreate, modernize, and elevate the standard uniform for the yacht crew. As the cast of Project Runway ran with their options, the Below Deck cast including Gary were able to try on prototypes and offer feedback about their work. It was something Gary explained he "would do it again in a heartbeat" on his Instagram.

Gary & Daisy Are Sparking Dating Rumors Again

According to screenshots shared from Daisy and Gary's Instagram accounts on Reddit, the pair are sparking dating rumors again after staying at the same hotel. Reddit user u/Radiant_Sign4112 shared photos of the pair that were clearly taken at the same hotel, and while some posited that it was simply due to their Below Deck Sailing Yacht filming schedule, others had a relationship in mind. With Daisy moving on from her relationship with Colin and investing in her long-time friendship with Gary, it's possible the pair are getting into more romantic territory and spending their downtime together at a luxury hotel.

Gary Is Likely Filming Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5

Although he was slammed for his behavior on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, it's possible that Gary has been filming the show's upcoming fifth season throughout the summer months. While Gary has been busy, the rest of the cast has been equally busy and hasn't been able to share much about what they're up to, which has led many to believe that Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 has been filming or even recently completed. With Gary a huge part of the Below Deck world, it would be a shock to see him off the show for its upcoming charter season.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4, Episode 14 Recap: Feels Like Dead Butterflies

Last week on Below Deck Sailing Yacht , Parsifal III guest Tim walked into a sliding glass door and was bleeding from his forehead. He had to wait over 15 minutes to get any ice for his injury since two-thirds of the service crew were having a chat in the galley and not listening to their radios. Captain Glenn Shephard was not amused. Chief Stew Daisy Kelliher just gave him a 50-yard stare.

In her defense, Daisy (very defensively) told the captain that you can’t always hear the radios down in the laundry or in the guest area. But you weren’t in either of those places, Daisy. You were sitting on a chair in the galley talking to your friends and ignoring the guests for 17 minutes.

Even deckhand Chase Lemacks saw through Daisy’s blatant excuse for poor service. “It’s not the range [of the radios], it’s not the boat,” he commented. “You f*cked up. Just f*cking own it.” Is everybody Lisa Rinna now?

Promising to look into the radio issue later in the day, Glenn announced the tip total for Charter Seven was $20,000 US dollars.

Following the tip meeting, Glenn and First Mate Gary King tested the radios in various parts of the boat and had no problem communicating, to the delight of the deck crew.

“They’re really taking the piss now,” Chief Engineer Colin MacRae laughed. The guys got a big chuckle out of pretending to radio each other from various far-flung locations and being able to read each other “loud and clear.”

Daisy huffed off to her cabin, declaring she was “over it.” Just admit you f*cked up, Daisy.

Daisy’s sister Bonnie arrives for the crew night off

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

Until she pulled up in her taxi, Daisy hadn’t seen her sister Bonnie for three years, mostly due to Covid. And OMG, she sounds just like Daisy!

Bonnie followed her sister’s steps into yachting and is a yacht chef in South Africa. But Daisy said she’s never worked with her sibling and never plans to do so. “We would kill each other!”

Daisy wasted no time filling Bonnie in on current events, including her love triangle with Colin and Gary. While Daisy went to get ready for their night out, Bonnie introduced herself to the rest of the crew.

Chase just can’t seem to get lucky

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

At dinner, Daisy, Bonnie, Gary and Chef Ileisha Dell went out for a smoke break. Bonnie commented that if Daisy and Gary were on a desert island, they would probably be together. She thinks they’re more suited to each other as a couple than Colin and Daisy.

For some unknown reason, Ileisha went back to the table and told Colin that there was “a lot going on out there.” Why would you do that, Ileisha? Are you not getting enough camera time, so you need to stir up trouble?

“Having Daisy’s sister telling me that [Daisy and Colin] are not suited for each other,” Gary interviewed, “and we are, hurts. I’m not accepting that I’ve lost my chance. That f*cking hurts. Feels like dead butterflies.”

Even though Chase had high hopes of making out with Bonnie, in the van on the way back to the boat, Bonnie and a very drunk (as usual) deckhand Alex Propson shared a kiss. Don’t get your expectations up there, Bonnie. He’s probably already blacked out.

“Poor Chase, he’s always so close,” Junior Stew Lucy Edmunds interviewed. “But the satisfaction of watching a man gettin’ pied so hard. Chef’s kiss! Mwah!” she said, kissing her fingers. I had to Google “getting pied.” It means “being ignored or dumped by your bae.”

Another drunken night off

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

Back at the boat, Ileisha gave Chase a hug of consolation, even though she has a boyfriend. She felt bad for him that he’s such a nice guy, but he never gets the girl.

Even Gary got in on the action, telling Chase, “You’re the second-best deckhand I’ve ever had in my life.” But then he added, “I just wish your personality complimented your work ethic.” He got a good laugh with that.

In the hallway, Gary pushed up against Daisy and then accused her of trying to kiss him. But a few minutes later, he was making out with the other Junior Stew Madison “Mads” Herrera next to the hot tub. Bonnie was right. Gary likes Daisy, but even if they got together, he’d soon be distracted by someone else. Gary just wants to kiss all the girls!

So Daisy settled Bonnie in the master cabin, while she and Colin took the guest cabin right next door. And Gary and Mads took the other guest cabin across the hall. The sound effects told us more than we needed to know.

Hurricane Bonnie says goodbye

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

The next morning, Bonnie woke up all alone in the master and went in search of her sister. “Who’s in here?” she asked herself, as she opened the door to the cabin where Daisy and Colin were engaging in a bout of morning sex. Should’ve locked that door, Daisy!

“I need love, too,” Bonnie moaned, crawling into bed with her sister and her boyfriend. As she squeezed her way into their twin bunk, Colin reached an arm around Daisy and patted Bonnie on the back good-naturedly. “Thank you, Colin,” she told him. “You have the right idea.”

As Daisy hugged her sister goodbye, she told her, “See you again in three years. I’m traumatized.”

“What do you mean?” Bonnie asked. “ I’m traumatized!”

“Colin, look after her,” Bonnie told the engineer. “And don’t you dare fight. You guys are way better than that!”

“Bonnie was definitely a hurricane [that blew] through the Parsifal III crew,” Daisy commented. “And she was pretty spot on with her analysis of Gary. But my relationship with Colin is very different. He’s direct. He knows what he likes … and his calm nature is very attractive.”

Not just another preference sheet meeting

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

As Bonnie’s taxi drove away, Glenn called Daisy, Ileisha and Gary to the crew mess to prepare for the next charter. The next charter consisted of primary guest Bryan, his companion Robb, Madison and married couple Craig and Wick. So all guys then. This could be fun. Except that Bryan’s charter requests were three pages long!

“I don’t expect the chef to be as versed in international cuisine as I am,” wrote Bryan. “So I ask that they not attempt to provide me any dishes from outside their wheelhouse.” That sounds like a definite challenge. Ileisha’s shown herself to be very proficient in international cuisine on past charters.

“Meow!” Gary said, getting a big laugh from his co-workers.

But wait, there’s more. “Bryan has requested his toilet paper be folded into roses one day and sailboats the next,” read Daisy, rolling her eyes into her forehead. “On night two, they would like a Pride dinner with seven courses, each course to represent a color of the rainbow.”

“‘My ideal dinner consists of at least 10 courses,'” Ileisha continued reading. “Oh, my God!”

The primary made it very clear that his wishes would supersede those of his guests. Isn’t a good host supposed to put his guests’ wants and needs first?

“It’s all about the primary,” Glenn said. “I think Bryan is going to be a little bit high maintenance.” I hope they’re nicer than they sound.

As usual, it was an early night for the crew. “Good night, Chase,” said Alex. “Good night, moon; good night radio … charging in the room.” Awww! That was my son’s favorite bedtime book when he was a baby. I laughed out loud.

Another day, another dollar

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

“Second to last charter!” Ileisha announced early the next morning.

“I can do pink champagne when they come, on arrival,” Daisy told the chef. While Mads declared her radio to be on “full blast.”

“Last charter, we weren’t on top of the guests,” Daisy interviewed. “I’m definitely feeling the pressure to step it up and deliver the best service I can … I am on a mission.”

Glenn personally checked the cabins after the stews were done cleaning and told Daisy they all “looked good.”

The guests arrived in matching shirts with their names printed on the back. That should make it easy to learn all the names. One of the guests was wearing very fancy (and uncomfortable-looking) high heels. “I just want to make sure that I can’t wear these on the boat, right?” he asked.

“You definitely don’t want to wear them up the passerelle,” Daisy told him.

Following a quick tour of the boat, the guests were ready to start their charter. Glenn radioed Colin to fire up the engines and get ready to go.

Ileisha had the fancy hors d’oeuvres ready. Daisy offered them a canapé made of Manchego cheese wrapped in a fried sage leaf. “Oh, my God!” one of the guests exclaimed.

“Look at the rainbow fruit!” another guest gasped. “I thought we were the rainbow fruit!”

“We are,” responded his companion, “and that’s why it’s perfect.”

Sails up for the guests

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

“I’m excited we’re going to get to sail right away,” one of the guests said.

“Daisy, I’m going to get quite a bit of heel,” Glenn radioed the chief stew. “So make sure things are well stowed.”

When the sails were up, the engines were shut down and the boat heeled to 20°. The guests were thrilled. But below deck, poor Ileisha was struggling to create an awesome dinner in a galley where everything was sliding off the counter. “I’m not ready,” she cried. “This is insane. F*cking hell!”

“I haven’t bent over this much in a long time,” one of the guests exclaimed happily. “Oh, my God!”

Sailboat Race

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

As the Parsifal approached another boat with their sails up, Glenn asked, “Who is that? Zengie? That guy’s moving!”

“Let’s race them!” the guests begged. “Let’s race that boat!”

Glenn left Colin steering the boat, while he went below to call the other boat. “They’ve got sails up,” he said. “We’ve got sails up. Any time two sailboats are sailing in the same area, that’s a race.”

Glenn called the other boat and asked if they were cool with them sailing next to them for a bit. He promised not to get too close and said if they were uncomfortable with anything to just let him know.

The guests and the deck crew were all excited to be racing alongside the other sailboat. Meanwhile, there was chaos below, where things were sliding around and crashing to the floor. “Sh*t goes flying everywhere,” Glenn laughed with the guests. “We break a lot of stuff.”

“This really doesn’t help my prepping,” Ileisha complained, in the galley.

“The boys are playing with their big toys,” Daisy told her.

“This [race] really is like the cherry on top,” Glenn interviewed. “I always say my job is to impress the guests and give them a special experience.”

Glenn declared himself the winner of the race, and everyone else decided it was “very, very cool.”

Water toys and NautiBuoys

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

Once the sails were lowered and the boat was anchored, it was time for the water toys. “I love hopping on the NautiBuoy!” a guest joked as he jumped onto the inflatable dock.

Gary warned another guest about an under-inflated floaty, “It’s a little bit floppy.”

One of the other guests quipped, “Jerry, after a certain age, that happens.”

In the galley, Ileisha was preparing her 10-course meal, and the guests were starting to notice some delicious smells wafting up the stairwell. “I have definitely served a 10-course meal many times,” Cheffie commented, “and they’ve always been amazing. But this is, like, the least [amount of] time that I’ve had to do something like this. Generally, you have days.”

“It’s a challenge,” she added. “But most definitely not one that I can’t handle.” I hope she knocks his rainbow socks off.

Colin and Gary have a heart-to-heart

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

Done with the water toys, the guests went below to escape the sun and get some rest before dinner. On deck, Colin asked Gary how he was feeling about his and Daisy’s relationship.

“I’m way happier being [Daisy’s] friend, I think,” Gary admitted.

“When did you figure that out?” Colin asked. “You’re such a douchebag. You come into the season wanting something…”

But Gary explained that he came into the season just wanting “to see if anything [would] happen” with Daisy.

“I wasn’t sure about it,” Gary added. “And also we live two different lives, brü.”

Colin was annoyed. “Gary has contradicted himself so many times this season,” he commented, “that it’s becoming difficult to believe what he says.” Cue the montage of Gary saying one thing about Daisy, and then saying the exact opposite immediately following. I don’t think even Gary knows how he really feels about Daisy.

“He’s a friend,” Colin added. “He’ll always be a friend. But I’m just realizing he’s one of those guys that I can’t trust completely.” Colin’s a lot more mature than Gary. I love Gary, but if Daisy doesn’t stop flip-flopping between these two, I’m going to have to pay someone to smack some sense into her. Figuratively speaking, of course.

Preparing that 10-course meal

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

While Gary was busy hitting on Mads in the salon, Chase was in the galley trying to be of help to Ileisha, who was a bit frazzled about her big dinner. He talked her through the 10 courses, reading from a whiteboard attached to the refrigerator.

Once all five guests were at the table, Ileisha announced the first course, an amuse-bouche of almond and grape gazpacho with rose petals on top. “ Amuse-bouche ” literally translates from French to “happy (i.e. amused) mouth.”

“I love being amused,” Bryan joked.

“Especially in your bouche,” his partner responded. Again, these guys are too funny!

The second course was a Beef and Pork Stuffed Olive, which Bryan was very excited about.

Third course: Lemon Ricotta Stuffed Squash Blossom With Beetroot Ketchup.

The fourth course was a Sweet Potato and Asiago Cheese Soufflé, which looked absolutely delicious.

Mads gives Gary a smackdown

below deck sailing yacht 4 reddit

As the interior staff waited to serve the next course, Gary walked into the galley and told Mads, “I just want to let you know that I think you’re such an amazing person.”

When she dodged his kiss, Chase said, “Gary, read the room.”

“It’s like a gnat that just keeps coming at you,” Mads said about Gary. “You’re just like, okay, f*ck, whatever.”

“You kissed me the first night,” Gary reminded her.

“The first night?” Chase corrected him. “She kissed me on the first night, dawg.” Gary was still quarantined with Covid then.

“That’s why she was like, ‘Oh, I’ve really got to do better with my life,'” Gary joked.

“If I was really trying to go for better,” Mads clapped back, “I’d have made out with Alex.”

That got a burst of laughter from the crew. A few minutes later, Gary was still shocked. “Talk about knowing how to cut me deep,” he complained. “F*cking hell. But I do believe there’s some truth in that.” I think so, too. Mads is probably still wishing she’d gone for Alex, rather than Gary. If only Alex didn’t get so drunk on their nights off.

“I’m offended, 100%,” Gary interviewed. “I can take a joke, but I don’t think she meant it in a joking way.” I don’t either, Gary. Mads is just not that into you. You’re the one who’s pursued her hard the whole season, even though she’s given you very little encouragement. She’s told you time and again that she’s not serious about you. Take the hint.

“Maybe this isn’t the chick for me,” the first mate interviewed. “I need to do some self-reflecting. I’m f*cking over this.”

TELL US – DO YOU AGREE THAT MADS JUST ISN’T THAT INTO GARY? DO YOU THINK SHE’D BE BETTER OFF WITH ALEX? WHY DOES GARY KEEP TELLING COLIN THAT HE AND DAISY ARE JUST FRIENDS, BUT THEN HE KEEPS TRYING TO KISS DAISY? DOES GARY EVEN KNOW WHAT HE WANTS?

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? Here's what we know

W hat happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5? That’s the question on fans’ minds after it was revealed Below Deck Med Season 9 will air following Below Deck Season 11.

Ever since Below Deck Sailing Yacht premiered on Bravo, it has followed the OG show.

Below Deck Med would then hit Bravo airwaves once the sailing show had wrapped it’s run.

That’s the way it’s been for the past four years, except for last year when Below Deck Down Under Season 2 aired after Below Deck Sailing Yacht.

So why all of a sudden is there a switch in the schedule, especially since Below Deck Med Season 8 just ended in January?

Let’s take a look at what we know.

What happened to Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5?

The reason for the change-up likely has to do with the sexual misconduct allegations that came out against Gary King after Season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was filmed.

Leaked photos revealed that Daisy Kelliher and Gary were back for another stint aboard Parsifal III with Captain Glenn. The two of them returning was music to fans’ ears as they helped make Below Deck Sailing Yacht a huge success with Colin MacRae.

However, a couple of weeks later, news broke that a member of the production team came out via Rolling Stone to accuse Gary of unwanted sexual advances and harassment. Gary was soon removed from the BravoCon 2023 list, making clear Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be in trouble.

Unlike when Peter Hunziker was fired by Bravo for a racist post and then edited out of the season, Gary has not been fired from the show. Plus, editing Gary out really wouldn’t be an option because he plays such a pivotal role and makes a good story even if fans don’t like him.

All of this means that what would have been Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 could be scrapped. Should that be the case, a new season of the sailing show won’t air for a long time.

Then again, maybe the powers that be are still trying to figure out how to save the season with Gary, and they just need more time.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht fans share thoughts on schedule change

A Reddit thread devoted to the Below Deck Med and Below Deck Sailing Yacht swap had fans buzzing.

“I would absolutely be okay with a delay if it means not having to watch Gary. I’m not sure I’ll even watch if he’s on it, especially since Colin isn’t. And Glenn the enabler has went from being best captain to #3 now…,” wrote one user.

Another admitted to liking the sailing show with Daisy but could do without Gary and would be fine if Season 5 never aired.

“AS IT SHOULD BE. Bravo needs to learn- you hire racists, you hire sexual abusers, you’re going to lose money. The end.” was another remark.

A different user doesn’t think the season will air and noticed Daisy switched her Instagram bio, so that may be a clue that Season 5 will never see the light of day. There was also speculation that Below Deck spin-offs will soon be combined for money reasons.

“That is a possibility or they’re still editing the heck out of it to reduce his role as much as possible but that has got to be a monumental task. I doubt they’d scrub an entire season but maybe more things have come out behind the scenes we’re unaware of and they have to do what they have to do especially with all the negative publicity they’re getting with Andy Cohen lately.” declared another user.

Along with Below Deck Sailing Yacht being pushed back, Below Deck Down Under fate seems to be up in the air. As Monsters and Critics previously reported, Captain Jason Chambers asked for fans’ help with Season 3.

Be sure to keep checking back for more news on th e Below Deck franchise.

Below Deck Med Season 9 premieres on Monday, June 3 at 9/8c on Bravo. Below Deck Sailing Yacht is currently on hiatus on Bravo.

MEULABOH, Indonesia (AP) — The boat glided across waters that were dark and still, under a night sky that was cloudless and calm. But on board, the 12-year-old girl quaked with fear.

The captain and crew who she says had tortured her and three other women and girls were not finished. And the punishment for disobedience, the men warned, would be death.

It was the third night that the girl and around 140 other ethnic Rohingya refugees had been trapped on the wooden fishing boat, floating off the coast of Indonesia. These children, women and men had fled Bangladesh and their homeland of Myanmar in a bid to escape violence and terror, only to face the same horrors with a crew that seemed to delight in their dread.

Huddled among the other women and girls, the 12-year-old — identified in this story only by the initial N, because she is a sexual assault survivor — tried to hide her face. She had already survived a night in the captain’s bedroom, where she says he and several crew members had beaten and sexually abused her.

Like most of the passengers, she had survived attacks by Myanmar’s military that forced her and her family to flee to neighboring Bangladesh. There, she had survived nearly seven years in violence-plagued refugee camps. And she had thus far survived this journey without her family, who hoped she’d make it to Malaysia, where she was promised as a child bride to a man she had never met.

Her young life had been one long battle to survive. And so, it seemed, this night would be no different.

The captain was in a rage. He ordered more girls to join him and his crew in the bedroom.

No one budged.

“If you don’t come to us,” the captain shouted, “then we will capsize this boat!”

What happened next would force N and the other Rohingya on board into yet another battle for survival.

For many, this would be the battle they finally lost.

In March, Indonesian officials and local fishermen rescued 75 people from atop the overturned hull of a boat off the coast of Indonesia’s northern province of Aceh. Another 67 passengers, including at least 28 children, had been killed when the boat capsized, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

Until now, little was known about how the boat capsized, or why. This account, as told to The Associated Press in separate interviews with eight surviving passengers, provides the first insight into what happened on board and why so many died. The men, women and children interviewed include witnesses of the events leading to the capsize and of the sexual abuse, as well as the only surviving sexual assault victim, N.

The disaster is the latest in a string of tragedies to befall the Rohingya, a stateless Muslim minority that suffered mass slaughter at the hands of Myanmar’s military in 2017 in what the United States has dubbed a genocide . Over the past two years, the Rohingya have increasingly fled Bangladesh’s refugee camps, where gang violence and hunger has surged, and Myanmar, where a bloody conflict between the ruling military junta and ethnic rebel groups has escalated. Muslim-majority Malaysia, which the Rohingya view as relatively safe, is the preferred destination.

The results of this mass exodus have been catastrophic . Last year, 4,500 Rohingya — two-thirds of them women and children — fled Myanmar and Bangladesh by boat, the UNHCR reported. Of those, 569 died or went missing while crossing the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea, the highest annual death toll since 2014.

International indifference toward the Rohingya has, in many ways, worsened the crisis. In several cases, coastal countries in Asia have ignored pleas to rescue imperiled Rohingya boats , despite international laws mandating the rescue of boats in distress. Global donations for the nearly 1 million Rohingya languishing in overcrowded camps have plummeted, leading to slashed food rations . And no country is offering large-scale resettlement.

Most Rohingya understand the risks of taking to the sea. But those who board the vessels say the world has left them with little choice.

And so it was that N arrived one night in March at a remote beach in southern Bangladesh, where she climbed into a small fishing boat that would take her away from everything she knew, including her family.

Like an increasing number of underage Rohingya girls , she had been promised as a wife to a man in Malaysia she’d spoken to only by phone. These marriages are rooted in desperation: Many parents in the camps can no longer feed their children or afford the traditional dowry demanded by grooms. The men in Malaysia forfeit dowries and often send money to the brides’ parents.

The fishing boat ferried N and her fellow passengers to a larger boat, which took them deeper into the Bay of Bengal. One day later, they were moved again to an even bigger boat, with a crew from Myanmar.

For around a week, they slid seamlessly through the sea. The crew was kind, providing enough food and water. The children had space to play. The waves were placid. For Rahena Begum, traveling with her 9-year-old daughter and 12- and 13-year-old sons, it almost felt too easy.

Until suddenly, it wasn’t.

The captain told those on board the plan had changed. They would need to transfer everyone to an Indonesian fishing boat, with a crew who would take them the rest of the way to Indonesia. From there, the passengers would be smuggled into neighboring Malaysia. Though the captain gave no reason for the switch, the recent surge in Rohingya arrivals has put Indonesian authorities on alert for boats from Bangladesh and Myanmar.

The sight of the rickety Indonesian vessel sent a chill through the passengers. Muhammed Amin, who had fished the waters off Bangladesh for years and spent countless hours on boats, estimated the Indonesian vessel was built to accommodate, at most, 60 people — not 140.

But the Myanmar captain and crew, he says, reassured him the boat was safe and that it would reach Indonesia in one day.

Reluctantly, Amin, N, Rahena and the others climbed into the Indonesian vessel. The Myanmar boat soon disappeared into the distance.

Almost immediately, the Indonesian captain and crew separated the men from the women.

The men were forced into the boat’s cramped, stifling cargo holds, one of which was beneath the captain’s bedroom. Anyone who protested was beaten, Amin says.

The captain and crew turned to the women and girls, but they did not speak Indonesian and could not understand their demands.

A few Rohingya men who spoke the language were allowed out of the hold to translate. When the women understood what the captain wanted, they began to cry.

The men told the crew to leave the women alone. The crew beat them, and then beat the women.

Seventeen-year-old Samira, whose husband was stuck in the hold, became an early target. The captain and crew repeatedly ordered her into the bedroom. A relative of Samira’s, Fatima Khatun, told the tearful teen to say she was sick, and used hand signals to explain to the captain that Samira was married. The crew moved on.

N, however, had no one to protect her. And she quickly caught the captain’s attention.

She was a child stuck in the middle of the ocean, facing a group of men who warned they were armed, though no one ever saw a gun.

She had no choice.

And so, N and four other women and girls entered the bedroom.

It wasn’t long before the stillness of the night was shattered by their screams.

Through her terror, N struggled to make sense of what was happening, then struggled to make it stop. But inside the room, there was no pity, only pain.

One of the women managed to slip out, but N and the others were trapped. Two of the girls were teenagers, and the third around 20, N estimated. All were in tears.

The abuse by the captain and five of his six crew members lasted all night, N says. Attempts to fight back were met with beatings.

From the cargo hold below the bedroom, the men could hear the cries. Those who dared to climb onto the deck could see the abuse unfolding through the room’s windows. But believing the crew was armed, they say, they were powerless to stop them.

When morning finally dawned, N spotted a man she knew and signaled to him for help. He approached the room and was beaten by the crew but persuaded the captain to let N out to use the toilet. She hid among the other women and hoped the captain was finished with her.

He was, at least for the moment. But he and the crew were not done with the other three girls, whose assaults continued for a second night.

In the sweltering hold, 19-year-old Jannat Ullah’s yearning for fresh air grew so intense he risked climbing on deck. When he emerged, he says, he looked through the bedroom window and saw the captain raping one of the teens. A crew member spotted Jannat and slapped his head until he retreated. But later, Jannat says, he watched through a gap in the wall as another crew member raped the same girl.

The sun was rising again, along with the passengers’ desperation. The crew had given them no water and only tiny portions of rice, noodles and eggs. They wondered how much longer they could last.

Fatima Khatun, sitting next to the captain’s room with her 8-year-old daughter, Ruma, had witnessed the abuse of the girls inside and could bear no more. She signaled through the window to the girls to come out.

At last, that night, they did, emerging sobbing and speechless. Fatima and Samira told them to cover themselves with hijabs and tried to hide them.

It was then that the captain and crew began demanding fresh victims.

The women and girls refused. The crew kicked and punched them. The women wept but stood their ground.

The captain and crew had been drinking alcohol and smoking marijuana, the passengers told the AP. The captain was growing angrier.

“If you don’t come into the room, I will capsize this boat!” he thundered, again and again.

Samira told herself he must be joking.

It was around 9 p.m. and many of the children had fallen asleep, oblivious to the chaos. As Fatima fretted over the captain’s threats, daughter Ruma slumbered against her arm.

Fed up with the hold, Amin and Jannat had come up on deck. The captain, Amin says, looked drunk, his body wobbly. The captain went to the toilet and then headed to the helm.

Which is when, Jannat says, he saw the captain push the steering wheel with his leg.

The vessel tilted violently, sending passengers tumbling. And then it smashed into a wave.

In the blackness of the water, people screamed for salvation, for God, for their children.

“RUMA!” Fatima cried, searching wildly for her daughter, who had been ripped away when the boat overturned. “RUMA!”

Fatima fought to stay afloat, but the water was swallowing her as fast as she was swallowing the water.

Suddenly, hands closed around her arm and yanked upwards. Passengers who had climbed on top of the overturned hull were pulling her to safety.

She screamed and screamed for her little girl. But Ruma was gone.

Jannat could hear his 7-year-old cousin, Futika, shouting from somewhere inside the boat. Frantic, the teen swam back into the vessel and spotted Futika wedged with others inside the cargo hold. Jannat tried to yank him free, again and again. But it was futile. Jannat swam out, clambered onto the hull and wept.

Those who were drowning desperately clutched at others struggling in a sea that was fast becoming a graveyard. Among the dying were mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, a 3-year-old boy and his parents.

Scores of passengers found themselves trapped under heavy fishing nets that ensnared them when the boat overturned. Women wailed for help that did not come.

N battled her way through the throngs until she made it onto the hull. Once again, she had managed to survive.

But the three girls who were abused alongside her in the captain’s bedroom had not, their battered bodies disappearing into the depths.

In the water, Rahena Begum spotted her 9-year-old daughter, Rema, but her two sons were nowhere to be seen. Other passengers pushed Rahena and Rema onto the hull, then began to pump the unresponsive child’s chest and water-swollen stomach. Suddenly, Rema’s hand moved, and she sputtered a few words.

Rahena pulled her daughter into her lap and cuddled her. Her baby was alive, at least for now. So was her 13-year-old son, who’d also made it onto the hull. But her 12-year-old boy, Noor Aziz, was missing. She would never see him again.

Amin knew they had to keep the vessel stable if they had any hope of surviving. He ordered the men to stand on the corners of the hull, to try to balance the weight.

In March, Indonesian officials and local fishermen rescued 75 people from atop the overturned hull of a boat off the coast of Indonesia’s northern province of Aceh. The crew, meanwhile, wanted to be anywhere but the boat. Amin spotted the captain and three crew members swimming away, using water jugs as flotation devices. The remaining three crew tried to follow them, but Amin and the other men held them back, forcing them to stay on the hull. Amin feared that if rescuers found them on the boat without a crew, the passengers would be blamed for the disaster.

Hours passed, and those on the hull waited for a miracle. In the morning, it seemed to arrive, in the form of another fishing boat. Scores of passengers leaped into the water and swam toward it. But the fishing boat was tiny and could not hold them all. The crew allowed six people on board, then headed for shore.

The waves had worsened, and passengers’ frantic attempts to flee the overturned boat had left the vessel unstable. It capsized again.

Rahena found herself back in the water, fighting once more to save her daughter. She spotted Rema slipping below the surface and grabbed her, before other passengers pushed the pair back onto the hull.

But Rema had grown delirious. She tried to bite people and could not speak. Rahena knew her daughter was in urgent need of help.

Others never made it back on board. Samira’s husband, Akram Ullah, estimates at least 20 drowned when the boat overturned the second time.

The subsequent capsize had knocked loose the remains of passengers who had drowned inside the vessel the night before. Jannat spotted the lifeless body of his little cousin, Futika, bobbing in the waves.

More fishing boats arrived, and passengers called out for help. But those on board the vessels simply shot photos and videos of them, then left.

A few passengers tried to swim to shore, promising to send help if they made it. They were never seen again. And help still did not come.

But, at least, the rain did.

The passengers, weak with thirst, collected what they could in a tarp and shared sips of it, thanking Allah for sparing their lives.

Yet as another night passed, it was clear not everyone would be spared. Rahena’s daughter, cradled in her lap, had gone still. Rahena hugged her little girl and tried to talk to her. But the life had drained from her daughter.

The passengers prayed for the child, then slid her body into the sea.

Around 30 minutes later, Rahena says, the rescue ship finally arrived.

In the days following the disaster, the bodies of 12 women and three children were recovered from the waters off Aceh, according to the UNHCR. The search for more has been called off.

Although the fishing boat’s crew rescued the initial six people from the hull the morning of March 20, search and rescue vessels were not launched until later that evening. Officials finally spotted the boat around 9 a.m. March 21, about 22 kilometers (14 miles) offshore, and finished evacuating all the passengers from the hull around midday.

Ibnu Harris Al Hussain, chief of Banda Aceh’s search and rescue agency, said the rescue operation began shortly after his agency learned about the capsized boat. He also said officials needed time to coordinate a plan to care for survivors once they reached land, while crews at sea initially kept their distance out of fear the passengers would hurt themselves trying to swim to the rescue boat.

“The most important thing is that we have ensured their safety when they were found,” Hussain wrote to the AP.

On April 2, police announced they had arrested three members of the crew, plus a fourth man who was not on board the boat. They were charged with people smuggling, which carries a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison. Police are still searching for the remaining crew, including the captain, whose mobile phone activity places him in Malaysia, West Aceh Police Chief Andi Kirana told the AP.

Police are not considering murder charges, Kirana says, because they believe the capsize was an accident — the result of an overcrowded boat simply taking on too much water.

But N and the other passengers believe the disaster was a deliberate act of revenge by a sadistic captain and crew who thought they could escape. And for that — and for all the suffering endured — the punishment, N says, should fit the crime.

They tortured us. They treated us like animals,” she says. “We want the government to treat them like animals.”

Kirana also said police are not considering rape charges, because they haven’t received any reports of sexual assault. But N says police have never questioned her about what happened on board.

For now, she and the other passengers remain in limbo, sleeping under tents behind a government office building. They have been shifted between shelters amid protests by locals who want them to go away. But there is nowhere for them to go.

Though they have survived so much, some wonder what it was all for.

Rahena questions why she was spared, when two of her children were not. Her husband, already in Malaysia, blames her for attempting the journey and for the death of their daughter and son.

“I lost my hope when I lost my children,” Rahena says. “I feel like I have nothing.”

N, alone and aching for her mother, hopes to somehow make it to Malaysia and to the man who wants her as his wife.

Maybe then, she says, she will finally be free — though in reality, Rohingya child brides in Malaysia often become prisoners to abusive husbands.

For now, all she can do is fight to survive another day and pray for a future free of pain.

“I don’t want to suffer anymore,” she says.
