ST PETERSBURG, FL WOMEN'S PERFORMANCE RACE WEEK
Welcome to American Sailing's late-winter Women's Performance Race Week powered by North U. Held at the St. Petersburg Sailing Center in Florida this clinic will help you master racing trim, helming, and boat handling. Seasoned coaches aboard high-performance J/70s will be your guide through practical on-water training and races, shoreside seminars, and insightful video reviews.
“Performance Race Week is about getting faster and smarter, and while a sunburn will soon fade, the memories and the lessons will last a lifetime.”
Performance race week - st PETE
Course overview.
The Women’s Performance Race Week is a five-day clinic designed to elevate your competitive sailing skills. The curriculum covers essential areas including trim, helming, and boat handling, with special attention given to tactical decision-making, teamwork, and communications. Participants receive hands-on coaching aboard J/70s, applying learned theories through on-water training and races. This practical experience is enriched by comprehensive shoreside seminars and daily video reviews. You will improve your skills in every facet of racing and become a better, more versatile and more confident racer.
The clinic teaches refined techniques to transform you from a racer into a winner. Sailboat racing is a complex endeavor drawing upon a broad mix of skills. Every sailor has strengths and weaknesses in their skill set. We’ll improve areas of weakness and build on your strengths to send you home a better, more versatile racer. By having your coach on board we are able to focus on your particular skill set.
The Coaches
North U coaches combine championship racing skills with years of coaching experience. With just four sailors plus a coach aboard each boat you’ll get close personal attention. Just to be clear: The coaches will NOT be sailing the boats. You and your team do all the sailing.
The Boats - J/70
The J/70 is a modern, comfortable, responsive, racing boat; and one of the most popular boats on the racing circuit today.
Performance Racing Trim and Performance Racing Tactics are the best sailboat racing textbooks out there. Written by North U Director Bill Gladstone, and packed with illustrations, and practical techniques, they make the perfect companion to this clinic. The books are NOT included with the class. If you don’t already own them, they are available at a 15% discount to participants. Details will be sent in the registration confirmation email.

St. Petersburg Population Growth
The reported population in St. Petersburg near the time of original incorporation - 1890 - was around 270 residents. By 1920, this number had grown to over 14,000 residents. By 1930, the population had more than doubled. This trend of intense growth continued over the years for some time. However, following 1980, the population came to something of a standstill until the year 2000. The population grew once more by another 10,000 individuals, only to see a decline at the next census that was taken in 2010. As the year 2020 comes closer - we see a slight uptick in the St. Petersburg population - but only time will tell if it will be maintained.
St. Petersburg was incorporated as a town on February 29, 1892, when it had a population of only some 300 people. However, St. Petersburg was not incorporated as a city until June 1903 .
The nearby water channels were soon dredged to create a more easily accessible channel, and the port in the area proliferated - bringing work for residents and drawing the attention of those looking for steady employment. The population of the city soon began to increase, and this brought more improvements to the area. Soon, the first trolley service was installed in the city of St. Petersburg, and by 1915 the city had established its library. This library still stands today.

Memorial Day warning: How to know if your chartered boat is illegal
T AMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — With Memorial Day weekend quickly approaching, the United States Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg has a message for those who plan to be out on the water.
The Coast Guard said some of the boats advertised on social media fail to meet federal regulations. Officials warn that searching for a deal to get on a boat may lead to a dangerous situation, one that could even be illegal.
Sector St. Petersburg monitors the water on the west coast of Florida from about the Fenholloway River to Marco Island, ensuring vessels are operating legally and safely.
“We have had accidents in our area where people are operating illegally who carried too many people,” said USCG Senior Investigating Officer Brian Knapp.
Knapp said the Coast Guard recognizes two different classifications of passenger vessels. One is an uninspected passenger vessel that may carry no more than six paying passengers that’s called a six pack.
“If you’re getting on a smaller class boat like a pontoon boat and they’re carrying more than six, you probably are getting on a boat that they’re not qualified to operate,” he said.
The Coast Guard said it has seen some of those illegal charters in Tampa Bay posing as sunset boats, dolphin encounters and tiki boats.
The other is an inspected passenger vessel, such as the Bay Rocket or Yacht StarShip. These boats are heavily regulated by the Coast Guard and have a certificate of inspection.
“You should expect to see this on any vessel caring more than six passengers,” said Knapp. “You should expect to see this if you don’t see it, we recommend you don’t get on the boat.”
But how do you know if the one you are getting on is legitimate? In both cases, Knapp said passengers have the right to ask the captain to see their captain’s license.
“The first thing that that person should do is to ask to see the license and if they don’t have it, don’t get on the boat,” he said.
Knapp said there are many charter vessels operating legally. You have to watch out for the ones operating illegally. For those, there are civil penalties and even criminal provisions in some cases.
The Coast Guard said do your research beforehand, so when you do get out on the water you are able to return safely. If you notice something is off or could be illegal, call the Coast Guard to report it at 866-881-1392.
