Powerboat P1 has announced the UIM Class 1 World Championship race calendar for the 2023 season, which sees the series heading to Wisconsin for the first time and returning to favorite locations in Florida and Indiana. A fleet of eight Class 1 boats is expected to compete in the six-venue championship from May through to September.

In October 2020, the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM) assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement that includes organizational and promotion rights to the world championship. However, with the pandemic seriously impacting the 2021 season by preventing overseas teams from traveling to the United States, it wasn’t until this year that P1 was able to action its plans to attract more race teams and grow the series through social media and building the worldwide television audience.

Racing will kick off at Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Atlantic Coast in late May, before moving to the Gulf Coast at the end of June when the Sarasota Powerboat Grand Prix will celebrate its 38th anniversary. In August the series will head north to Indiana for the Michigan City Great Lakes Grand Prix, and a new event in the Wisconsin city of Sheboygan on the western shore of Lake Michigan will host the Mercury Racing MidWest Challenge. Featuring the top categories of U.S. powerboat racing including Class 1, the three-day festival is expected to attract more than thirty teams to race along the Sheboygan waterfront. In early September the Class 1 fleet will be back on the Gulf Coast in St. Petersburg, and P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala is in advanced discussions to stage a season finale in Miami. “We raced in this iconic city in 2018 and returning this year with the Class 1 boats would create an outstanding climax to the 2023 championship,” Rangoonwala said.

“As we look ahead to the 2023 season, I can confirm that both the M CON Racing Team and Sudrheim Offshore Racing will be joining the series to give us an international field of eight boats with teams representing Australia, Sweden, Norway and, of course, the United States,” said Rangoonwala. “The M CON team will compete in a fully branded Monster Energy boat. This new canopied Skater 438 catamaran is the first purpose-built Class 1 boat for more than a decade. With Sudrheim Racing flying the flag for Norway next year, we can look forward to another Scandinavian team battling for the world title.”

This season’s championship will build towards an international race calendar in 2024 with host venues in Scandinavia and the Middle East being added to the schedule. In five years’ time, the key goal in P1’s development plan is to have twelve Class 1 teams racing at ten international venues. “Our live streaming this season will be significantly enhanced by the introduction of a new timing system which will show boat positions, distances between boats, speeds and lap times as live graphics,” explained Rangoonwala. “We’re on an exciting journey and our mantra is to take UIM Class 1 back to the pinnacle of offshore racing."

Class 1 World Powerboat Championship

The UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship (also known as Class 1 ) is an international motorboat racing competition for powerboats organized by the Union Internationale Motonautique (UIM). It is the premier class of offshore powerboat racing in the world.

The Championship

Class 1 is considered one of the most spectacular marine motorsports. A Class 1 race-boat has twin inboard 1100hp engines and can reach speeds in excess of 257   km/h (160   mph). All boats are limited by a minimum weight of 4950   kg.

The sport of powerboat racing has undergone unprecedented changes since the earliest recorded race in 1887 in Nice , France, organized by the Paris Sailing Club. The French also claimed the next two recorded races in 1903, a 62-mile race in Meulan on the River Seine organized by the Poissy Sailing Club and a 230-mile race from Paris to Trouville. But the first officially recognized international offshore powerboat race was a 22-mile event from Calais , France to Dover , England .

The modern-era of offshore powerboat racing was kick-started on 6 May 1956 with the first running of the famous Miami-Nassau race, which would ultimately lead to the introduction of the Sam Griffith Memorial Trophy and a UIM sanctioned World Championship in 1964. From 1964 to 1976 the winner of the World Championship was decided by points gained from multiple races held at venues around the world. From 1977 to 1991 the winner was decided by series of races at a single event at the end of the year. The World Championship reverted to a multi-event format in 1992.

As of 2019, APBA sanctioned Class One racing is being held by Powerboat P1 under the name Class One USA, with catamarans racing strictly regulated sterndrive Mercury Racing 9.0L 1100   hp twin turbocharged V8 motors, and unlimited power for mono-hulls. The Victory team from the UAE is the current defending championship team.

Class 1 Grand Prix Dubai 2012 Dubai Grand Prix - 2012.jpg

Weighing in at around 5 tonnes, each catamaran in the Class 1 fleet is approximately 12-14m in length, 3.5m wide, and constructed using composite materials.

Over the years, safety has become a key concern and today's Class 1 boats are the safest they have ever been.

Inside the cockpit, satellite GPS systems, trim indicators, engine data dashboards and instrument panels and warning lights keep the crew aware of the boat's progress during a race.

The cockpit is reinforced to withstand enormous impacts that may occur if a boat crashes at speeds in excess of 150   mph, with an escape hatch in the hull as an added safety feature in the event of an accident.

While a Class 1 race-boat is highly technical and state-of-the-art, and its overall performance is dependent on design, aero and hydro dynamics, choice of propeller and gear ratio selection, the relationship between driver and throttle-man, who navigate and control the power, must provide direct input to adjust trim and drive settings during a race or official qualifying, is ultimately the defining factor and crucial to performance.

Each boat has a two-man crew; the driver who navigates and steers the boat and a throttle-man who dictates the speed by controlling the throttles and the trim.

It is a combination that requires total trust – imagine driving a car and the person beside you has control of the accelerator – and a close working relationship. Spectators may imagine that the crew simply jump into the cockpit, and it's the guys who drive quickest that can win. A simple enough theory, but one that doesn't take into account the skills and professionalism of pilots who regularly hurtle across the waves at over 160   mph/250kmh.

Both pilots work closely with their pit crews to determine the race set-up: the type of propeller required for the conditions, gear ratio settings’, the amount of fuel needed and race tactics. Propeller choice is critical and can win or lose not only a race, but also a championship.

A Class 1 season consists of a series Grands Prix, made up of three official practice sessions, one official qualifying session which is also known as Pole Position and two races. The results of each race are combined to determine the winner of the World Championship. The European Championship and the Middle East Championship are defined by specific events in those geographic regions. The results in official qualifying determine the winner of the Pole Position Championship.

Eight races at four venues make up the UIM Class 1 World Powerboat Championship , with races run over approximately 55 or 75 Nm of multiple laps of approximately 5 Nm (including one or two mandatory long laps). [ citation needed ]

The World Championship is awarded to the team with the most accumulated points throughout the season. A winning crew collects 20 points, the runners-up 15, with the third-placed team awarded 12 points. [ citation needed ] [ citation needed ]

A Grand Prix weekend is run over three days, with registration, technical scrutineering and the first practice session and driver briefings taking place on day one. [3]

On day two a practice session is run in the morning, followed immediately by the Edox Pole Position (qualifying), also counting as a separate championship, and Race 1 in the afternoon. [4]

The Edox Pole Position, like the practice sessions, is run over the Grand Prix course, giving the crews a further opportunity to familiarize themselves with circuits and conditions, and to decide on set-up. It acts as the qualifier for the line-up for Race 1, with the Pole-sitter (fastest time) lining-up closest to the official start boat. The Edox Pole Position lasts for 45 minutes, with teams having to complete a minimum of one timed lap and allowed to return to the wet pits to make adjustments to set-up, but limited to a total of 10 minutes under the crane. [5]

On day three, a final practice session in the morning is followed in the afternoon by Race 2. Each race is started by a Nor-Tech 3600 supercat official pace boat, running at a controlled speed, which lead the boats from the wet pits and into a line-abreast under a yellow flag or amber flashing light, a green flag denoting the race start, with the finishing order of the Edox Pole Position dictating the line-up of the boats for Race 1 and the finishing order of Race 1, the start order for Race 2. [6]

Each race consists of approximately 11–15 laps and is 55–75   Nm in length, including one or two mandatory long laps. [7]

Sunday, March 31:  The Victory Team’s Erik Stark took full advantage of his pole position to lead a yellow-flag interrupted first-ever Grand Prix of Bình Định-Vietnam from start-to-finish in Quy Nhơn on Sunday morning.

The swede completed the 35-lap race in stifling heat just 2.715 seconds in front of team vietnam’s defending world champion jonas andersson. stark’s fifth career grand prix win and a first since sharjah in 2018 has given him an eight-point lead in the drivers’ championship. andersson’s runner-up spot marked his 33rd career podium in f1h2o racing. the result also saw team vietnam lead the sharjah team by 15 points in the uim f1h2o teams’ championship with the victory team in third..

Stark said:

“I had a good race. Of course, I was pacing myself and was feeling it. I had a big moment on the start straight and I thought this is it but the boat was good, the team worked well and I had amazing propellers from Mr. Dynamite. It was tough. It got quite rough and the wind was picking up all the time.”

Andersson added:

“I had quite a bad start compared to yesterday and I didn’t have any chance to overtake Erik. When we came out of the first lap, I know Erik and I train him. He is one of the best drivers in the championship. I tried to push as much as possible and I gained some time on him. Then I arrived too close and I didn’t see anything because of the spray and I had to back off. I was waiting for him to make a mistake but it was not possible to get too close to him. We should be happy with second place. The new boat was not perfect here. I think the old boat was better but you never know. The other boat was fantastic in Indonesia. I am happy for the team. Unfortunately, Stefan (Arand) broke his propeller, otherwise the team had a fantastic weekend and Stefan qualified third.”

uim class one world powerboat championship

After a spectacular collision between the Sharjah Team’s Filip Roms and the China CTIC Team’s Brent Dillard that forced a yellow flag after 17 laps, Dillard’s team-mate Peter Morin was able to overtake race one winner Rusty Wyatt to snatch third and the final place on the podium when Wyatt suffered communication issues with his radioman at the crucial restart. Wyatt recovered well and finished fourth for the Sharjah Team to hold joint second with Andersson in the points’ standings.

Morin said:

“I think it was one of the hardest races that I do. It was so hot. The water was very nice but the wind was difficult to control the boat. We did a good option on the race course and we are very happy to finally take the third place. I am so happy for the whole team who worked very hard to make a great job. I make a very good restart. I had a lot of speed. I was very happy to make this move after the restart. It would have been very difficult to do this afterwards.”

Strømøy Racing’s Bartek Marszalek and Marit Strømøy finished fifth and eighth, sandwiching Team Abu Dhabi’s Thani Al-Qamzi and the Red Devil-SMC F1 Team’s double World Champion Sami Seliö. The Emirati and the Finn finished sixth and seventh.

Stark’s Emirati team-mate Ahmad Al-Fahim claimed his first points of the season with ninth and Maverick Racing’s Cédric Deguisne moved up to 10th and claimed a championship point when Dutchman Ferdinand Zandbergen was disqualified after the race for taking the wrong direction on the course. His demise lifted Al-Qamzi’s team-mate Rashed Al-Qemzi and Ben Jelf of the F1 Atlantic Team into 11th and 12th.

1st Grand Prix of B ì nh  Đị nh-Vietnam – as it happened

Stark lined up on the pontoon ahead of Andersson, Arand, Wyatt and Morin for the start of the 35-lap encounter on Thi Nai Bay. After his accident in the morning’s warm-up session, Maverick Racing’s Alexandre Bourgeot and his team faced a race against time to repair the boat because he had already replaced his Moore for the spare DAC on Saturday. The team confirmed less than two hours before the race that the Frenchman would not start.

Engine changes forced Dillard and Jelf to line-up in 15th and 16th and Rashed Al-Qemzi started at the rear of the pontoon after replacing Alberto Comparato following qualifying. Could the Emirati resurrect Team Abu Dhabi’s fortunes while much of the western world celebrated Easter Sunday?

In baking heat, high humidity and a slight breeze coming off the shore, the start would be crucial and Stark managed to hold off Andersson as Wyatt found a way to pass Arand after the Estonian made a poor start. The two Swedes maintained the initiative but were not able to shake off a determined Wyatt. The leading trio began to pull away from Arand, who was under pressure from Morin from the outset. Seliö, Marszalek, Thani Al-Qamzi, Marit Strømøy and Ahmad Al-Fahim rounded off the early top 10.

Andersson had no answer to Stark and the Victory Team driver took advantage of his canny propeller choice and began to edge away: his lead was 3.547 seconds into lap six, as the top 10 held station and Roms and Dillard held 11th and 12th.

Stefan Arand’s dream of impressing the local crowd ended on lap seven when the second of the Team Vietnam boats ground to a halt with a broken propeller but the Estonian pulled off the course and the action continued interrupted with Stark leading Andersson by 2.977 seconds into lap 10. The F1 Atlantic Team’s Duarte Benavente joined Arand on the list of retirements after nine laps. His team-mate Jelf was running at the rear of the field in 15th behind Al-Qemzi.

There were no changes on the leader board through 15 laps with Stark maintaining a 3.583sec cushion Andersson with Wyatt and Morin unable to close the gap on the leading Swedes. The race was yellow-flagged on lap 17 when Roms spectacularly turned in too early, collided with and barrel-rolled over Dillard’s China CTIC boat, put both drivers out of contention and damaged both hulls.

Action resumed with a green flag on lap 21 and Stark managed to stay in front of the defending World Champion. But Wyatt suffered issues with his radio, lost contact with his radio man and also ceded his third place to Morin. Marszalek and Al-Qamzi both found a way to pass Seliö with Strømøy, Al-Fahim and Zandbergen rounding off the top 10.

Ten laps remained and Stark continued to maintain his composure as Morin began to nibble into Andersson’s hold on second place. Wyatt lost touch with the Frenchman but was running well clear of Marszalek and Al-Qamzi. The Emirati’s team-mate Al-Qemzi and Jelf remained at the rear of the field in 12th and 13th.

Andersson had no answer to his great friend’s speed and Stark used his pole position and cleaner water to full advantage to secure a memorable fifth career win to snatch the lead in the World Championship. Andersson held off Morin to take second and Wyatt stayed clear of Marszalek to seal fourth.

Wed may 18 2022, tv broadcast plans announced for uim class 1 world championship.

  • Bally Sports regional sports networks to broadcast all eight UIM Class 1 races this season
  • CBS Sports Network to screen offshore race events in Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and St. Petersburg
  • Worldwide TV broadcast deals to deliver potential reach of more than 230 million homes

Powerboat P1 is committed to the long-term development of offshore powerboat racing and quality broadcast television coverage is an essential building block for any successful motorsport. I believe that TV has a hand in creating the future of the sports it shows. By growing the national and international television audiences and attracting new teams and more fans to offshore racing, P1 can deliver significant value to host venues, race teams, sponsors and partners. We have new relationships in place with full service production company Case Productions and broadcast distribution specialist Blonde Ambitions whose respective aims will be to showcase our exciting, high speed sport and to secure new broadcast deals in key territories. Azam Rangoonwala Powerboat P1 CEO

As the final countdown begins to the opening round of the UIM Class 1 World Championship this weekend, Powerboat P1 has unveiled its television broadcast and live stream schedule for the new season. Six teams from three continents are heading to Cocoa Beach on Florida’s Space Coast and this international fleet reflects the momentum that has returned to the premier class of offshore racing.

The decision by new teams to enter Class 1 this year is superb news in respect of Powerboat P1’s aim to grow the class in the United States and at the same time develop plans to globalise the series over the coming years with a strong line-up international teams and both national and worldwide TV coverage plus live streaming. All eight Class 1 races in the six-venue championship will be broadcast nationally on Bally Sports through its family of regional sports networks. In Cocoa Beach, Sarasota and St. Petersburg, where Powerboat P1 is the race promoter, CBS Sports Network will screen the Class 1 and APBA offshore national championship racing, together with live streaming on the P1 Offshore Facebook page and Powerboat P1 YouTube page. Television coverage will kick off next month with highlights of the action from Thunder On Cocoa Beach and include a Class 1 season review show in December.

Powerboat P1 CEO Azam Rangoonwala said: “Powerboat P1 is committed to the long-term development of offshore powerboat racing and quality broadcast television coverage is an essential building block for any successful motorsport. I believe that TV has a hand in creating the future of the sports it shows. By growing the national and international television audiences and attracting new teams and more fans to offshore racing, P1 can deliver significant value to host venues, race teams, sponsors and partners. We have new relationships in place with full service production company Case Productions and broadcast distribution specialist Blonde Ambitions whose respective aims will be to showcase our exciting, high speed sport and to secure new broadcast deals in key territories.”

The potential reach of the Class 1 worldwide broadcast deals this season is more than 230 million homes, with coverage on leading sports channels including the UK and Western Europe, Australia, Singapore, Japan, the Philippines, South Africa, Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia, the Middle East and South America. Coverage also extends to established weekly motorsport news shows such as Max Power, Motorsport Mundial and Planet Speed. Melissa Payne at Blonde Ambitions commented: “With its international participation and profile, Class 1 resonates globally in terms of broadcast distribution and we are in discussion not only with leading sports networks but also non-sports channels in selected markets to extend the reach.”

In October 2020 the UIM assigned to Powerboat P1 the international rights to Class 1 offshore racing in an exclusive ten-year agreement, and P1 has a five-year agreement with the APBA giving it exclusive worldwide rights to film and distribute its offshore events. “How we consume sport has changed more in the last five years than it had in the previous fifty,” added Rangoonwala. “The power of the internet along with technology means there are a number of platforms available to sports fans via various media methods. Yet, good old-fashioned television is still king, for now anyway.”

UIM Class 1 : 2022 Race Calendar

  • Cocoa Beach : May 19-22
  • Sarasota : July 1-3
  • Michigan City : August 4-7
  • St. Petersburg : September 2-4
