The Restaurant

Ellen McCarty and Kevin Weinberg opened Walnut Creek Yacht Club in May of 1997 with the mission of bringing the finest and freshest from the sea to Walnut Creek.  Why do we call ourselves a yacht club?  Because we want to bring the atmosphere of a day on the Bay to landlocked Walnut Creek. We want our guests to feel comfortable, relaxed, and welcomed.  All of our guests are instantly members of the Club!  No sponsorship required, you are already a member.  But don’t forget to join our Loyalty Program, become a card carrying member, and start collecting points and awards.

Our décor includes many beautiful, nautical touches: teak, mahogany, stainless steel, and even an authentic jib which was a gift to Kevin from the America’s Cup Defender, Alinghi.  In January of 2008 we completed an extensive remodel project, expanding the restaurant by twenty-five percent, and adding an oyster bar.  We have been voted Best Seafood Restaurant in the East Bay by Diablo Magazine for 12 years and received numerous other awards, including Best Chef, Best Bartender, and Ellen has received the Best Sommelier award.  We are Michelin Guide recommended 2010-2014.  On the Bay Area A list we were voted Best Seafood Restaurant and Best Craft Cocktails in 2014, and Best Craft Cocktails in 2016.

Our seafood is supplied exclusively by Osprey Seafood Company, which is recognized as the top seafood purveyor in the Bay Area.  Our relationship with Osprey is more than just business: Kevin’s brother-in-law, Mike Weinberg-Lynn, owns Osprey.  This relationship, coupled with our high standards and care, guarantees our guests the kind of high-quality seafood for which the San Francisco Bay Area is famous.  When we say “fresh”, we really mean it.  Our seafood has never been frozen, either in shipping or processing.  When we receive it each morning, we keep it in its pristine state with very careful handling.  After we portion it, we keep it packed in crushed ice until we are ready to cook it for you.  Please accept our apologies if we run out of your choice.  Some items’ availability are controlled by restrictions for sustainable fisheries, and of course by Mother Nature.

Our non-seafood items are also from suppliers who are top in their fields.  Our house bread is Acme Levain and is made for us by Acme Bread Company.  The beef for our burger and steak is Certified Black Angus, it is brought to us by Golden Gate Meats from Derek Kampfes 18,000 acre ranch south of Billings, Montana.  Their Never Ever program means it is 100% hormone and antibiotic free, and is one of the few ranches in the country that practice sustainable stewardship of their land and caring animal husbandry.  Our chicken is Rocky Jr from nearby Petaluma, and is also hormone and antibiotic free, and free range.  Our produce is all hand-picked and delivered by Joe Rubino and family, a second generation Contra Costa County grower and purveyor.  Our eggs are all from cage-free, free-range chickens from Great Valley poultry in Modesto.  Our ice cream is from a small, top quality producer, The Latest Scoop, in Berkeley.  Ninety-nine percent of our menu is made in house, from our WCYC Clam Chowder, which is already justly famous, to our mayonnaise, salad dressings, sauces for the fish, and all of our desserts.  The quality of our products speaks for us.  We think carefully about everything we serve and from whom we buy.  We are transfat free, and we fry either in olive oil or canola oil only.  We are also high fructose-corn syrup free.  Our sodas are all natural and made from pure cane sugar, and even our ketchup is organic.

The Wine List

We have received Wine Spectator Awards every year from 2005-2022.  Our sommelier and co-owner, Ellen, has hand-picked every selection on our list, which changes frequently in order to include new discoveries.  We are grateful to all of the wineries that produce the wines on our list, but especially to the many small wineries, both locally and abroad, who trust us with their creative efforts.   The staff regularly tastes the wines on the list, and is happy to make suggestions if you so desire.

We have a full bar, and we pour a premium well.  We have a fine selection of single malt scotches, and a super lineup of topnotch rums from around the world.  Remember, rum is every sailor’s choice!  We have six great, fresh beers on tap and close to twenty wines by the glass.  Our bartenders are creative, charming, and professional, and are ready to shake you a fabulous martini, a delicious margarita, or to create for you your own unique concoction.  We  offer a great cocktail list which includes many of our award-winning drinks.   Our bar is a great place to tie up and have a drink and some oysters, or a full meal.  The entire menu is available at the bar at lunch and dinner.

Our market offers you the opportunity to bring our top-grade Osprey seafood home.  If you would like to pick up some of our pristine seafood and homemade sauces to take home with you, just let your server know.  We will have it ready for you when you are on your homeward course.  Or phone ahead and we will have it ready for you to pick up. Please do not hesitate to ask if we can get you something that you do not see listed on our market board.  We’ll do our best to fill your special requests.

Gift Cards? We’ve got ‘em

Need to say, “Thank you”, “ Congratulations”, “Happy Birthday”, or “Happy Anniversary”?   WCYC Gift Cards are a great way to say it.  We will even mail them for you!  Click on Contact Us or give us a call and let us know what you need.

We have T-Shirts, Kids and Baby Shirts, Dress Shirts, Polo Shirts, Hats, and Canvas Carry Bags, all great stuff for the golf course, beach, out to dinner or a day on The Bay!

After many requests, we now bottle and sell our famous Chef Kev’s “Hey mon, that’s hot!!” Habanero Hot Sauce.  Pick one up the next time you stop in, and impress your hot sauce-afficionado friends.

We even have burgees if you would like to fly one from your yacht.

Be proud of your club! Wear our gear!

Walnut Creek Yacht Club

Ratings and reviews, food and ambience, location and contact.

January is Lobster Month at the Walnut Creek Yacht Club. All month they serve, by reservation, your choice of grilled or boiled lobsters. They used to charge a price equal to the digits in the year, so in 2015 it was $20.15. They have since... moved to a flat $25.00, but for this you get the lobster, french fries, coleslaw, etc. And they used to have all 1.25lb lobsters. This year they were larger and some that we saw were much larger. When I asked the server about the disparity in the size he said that they just get a load of lobsters and don't really worry if one is 1.25 and one is 1.75. They are what they are! What they are is cooked really well and the sides are great. The service is always spot on and it is a pleasure to go out to eat at the Walnut Creek yacht Club - even when it's not Lobster Month. A birthday lunch with two family members, I had never heard of this place. Parking not too easy; I am disabled so was let off at the place, a handicap space not available. Arriving before noon we were easily seated and quickly attended. Two of... us chose the hot pepper pot soup, one got clam chowder. I liked it fairly well but the other later pronounced it his favorite of the meal. He also had fish tacos and half portion of salad. I chose mussels with garlic sauce and added Regatta fries to make it my French favorite. Should have asked if a half order was available...way too many! But good. Third member of our party had plantain with a seafood I have forgotten it was simple and slight but she enjoyed it. The restaurant became more and more filled as our meal progressed. Seems popular among local professionals. Conversation is possible despite the crowded atmosphere. There is a lively vibe. It is right on the corner of Bonanza and N. Main, has a tiny entry, personnel who are professionally courteous and interesting menu. I most likely will not return. Not really my style. More

Our group of five women friends decided to meet for lunch at this restaurant...and what a great place it turned out to be! It has a pleasant upscale and welcoming vibe. Since we went during "Lobster Month", each of us ordered the special meal that... included a whole Maine lobster (boiled or grilled) with lemon, melted butter, regatta fries and coleslaw. Everything was so delicious and all for just $25! The glass of Mai Tai I ordered paired well with the lobster. At the end of the feast, our friendly server offered us Loyalty Member cards which we plan to use on our next visit. Highly recommend this place if you like seafood! More

This is a great restaurant with fresh oysters, fresh seafood Kevin the chef owner is very dedicated always in the presence. His homemade soups are delicious. Happy hour is great, but be aware this place gets very busy and not easy to sit at the... bar. At happy hour they have a tremendous burger very tasty. Prices are reasonable with good service. You have a small parking lot in the back otherwise is street meter parking but beware parking meters in Walnut Creek are until late at night including weekends. The yacht club is closed on Sundays. There is a lunch and dinner menu. Kids are welcomed in the restaurant. More

My go to order for any seafood restaurant is fish and chips. To even begin to be rated above yuck, they must have coleslaw on the side. The Yacht Club exceeded expectations The fish was perfectly cooked, the chips were garlic fries ( which now... I wish more places served those), and the side of coleslaw exactly as I like it. My wife had the fish tacos and said they were amazing. The tortillas are corn and heated just enough to keep them strong. The inside looked quite crowded and noisy, so I recommend the outdoor area for a quiet dinner. More

Sat in the open air room. They could have decorated it inexpensively with a nautical theme, but no effort was made and it was totally devoid of any appeal. We were informed that we could not have two menus, no exceptions and the menu did... not have list of Beer or wine and the waitress did not know what wine or beer they bad. If we wanted to know we could get up and go outside for the qr code or go to their website. My husband and I have cell phones but are elderly and fund it difficult to read a menu on a small screen. Please assess your customers and at least try to politely accommodate. We left without ordering and went down the street to one of the other restaurants. More

The fish were delicious. I had the yellow fin tuna and others in my party had the salmon and crab sandwich. the polenta fires appetizer was also good. The service was very friendly. The only negative is the price which is very steep.

Best seafood ever ..truly! Started with shrimp cocktail..Great sauce with generous portion. Then CRAB cakes. Not crab bread like so many..but full of pure sweet crab meat and yummy sauce. Next the sweetest scallops lightly pan fried but still tender on a bed of arugula... and shredded radish. Lemon vinaigrette was devine. Stack sliced heirloom tomatoes underneath in a dill sauce if I recall. Sooo delicious. I had creme brulee which was great but REAL star was husbands nutty chunk of brownie in a sauce with ice cream! We will be back...and we live 2 hours away! Worthit52 More

Love going to the Yacht Club. Great full size menu with fresh options, as well as traditional fare. The environment is casual and comfortable with great service. Small bar area and it can get crowded are testaments to the regular following.

We had a large group and unfortunately they sat us outside in extreme heat, almost 100 degrees. But the staff found us a place inside eventually, and we all had good dinners. Nice menu with an emphasis on seafood. Very reasonable prices. The place cleared... out early on a Saturday evening. More

WCYC provides excellent food, (the freshest possible seafood!) excellent service, and a great wine list. I have been going to this restaurant for several years (as a local) and it's always reliable. I've never had a bad experience. Note: I don't think I would agree... though (as is noted on this site) that the atmosphere is "romantic". It's often full - a small restaurant, but not a quiet, intimate place. The outdoor shaded patio is my favorite spot to dine. More

Wife had petrale sole stuffed with hazelnut zucchini which she loved. I had my favorite sautéed scallops, delicious. The chowder was different but very good. Nice selection of raw bar goodies. Great variety of sauces and preparations. Server was very accommodating. If you're a fish... lover, don't miss it. More

Have not been here for many years. Except for the attentive staff, the atmosphere and food on the menu is unspectacular.

Three of us went to lunch on a Saturday. Two ordered the pre fix lunch of three items. Other ordered off the menu.had fish and chips plus cup of soup and cream brûlée dessert at $20.00. I received one small piece of breaded deep fried... fish and lots of French fries, cup of soup and tiny dessert. Others received very small portions except for one trout not. Cup of small clam chowder cost $9.00. Waiter repeatedly came to look at check he left with me. I assume he wanted to see how much of a tip I left him. Summary, food mediocre, overpriced with adequate service. Ambiance good, but exceedingly loud. I will not go back. More

It took 1.5 hours to get our meal. I am one that depend on reviews before making a selection for restaurants. Reason being is that I am new (Just moved here two weeks ago from this day) to California and I am unfamiliar with everything... here. As per another review site, this is listed as the #2 restaurant in Walnut Creek so I chose to take my fiancee here. As far as the decor and the ambiance great restaurant. Its cozy (not too small but not big) and comfortable with a professional crowd. Now our server *Brianne-not sure if I spelled that right) was fantastic!!!. Great attitude, always smiling and very knowledgeable. She was very patient and made recommendations just all out amazing person. After meeting her I was telling myself we picked a good restaurant. At the time we arrived (this is important) it was not busy at all and there were not a lot of people dining. With that said, it took us 45 minutes to get our APPETIZERS.......furthermore, the couple behind us received their entire meal in that time frame and our orders was taken about 4 minutes apart. I asked the manager for an explanation and he danced around it offering me the one appetizer free. I was not looking for a handout I make very good money and I don't need a handout, I wanted the problem fixed. He just smiled it off and left so that upset me. It took 40 min after we ordered just to get our APPETIZERS, and all we had was crab cake and soup. It took another 38 min after that to get our main course, and it came right at the point we was about to leave. Since the food was there, we didn't want it to go to waste so we stayed and ate. All this and people that entered the establishment after us received their food (appetizers and main course) way before us. I can't explain it, the manager had no explanation and our server felt so bad. She didn't know what to do she felt terrible and she blamed it on the kitchen. Everybody's experience is different and this review is not to tell you no to eat here as i'm sure your experience will be different as this was probably isolated but me personally will never eat here again. Price is not an issue with me as when we go out we want a nice meal and will pay top dollar but this place will never get my money again, what a nice welcome to California. Despite the unsympathetic manager, sub-par food and late food our server was still tipped very handsomely. More
