Throughout their, REO Speedwagon have sold over 40 million records worldwide. They’ve released 13 Top 40 hits, including chart-toppers “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Keep On Loving You.” The crown jewel of their catalog is 1980’s  Hi Infidelity , which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has since received the rare diamond certification from the RIAA.

Last January, founding keyboardist Neal Doughty announced his retirement from touring with the band after five decades. Longtime frontman Kevin Cronin remains, alongside bassist Bruce Hall, who joined the band in 1977. When Doughty confirmed his retirement from the road, Hall said that he would always be a member of the REO Speedwagon brotherhood, and that the door for him to play with the band again would always be open.

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive Hi Infidelity in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10x Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, REO Speedwagon released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Today, REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall (bass), Dave Amato (guitar), and Bryan Hitt (drums) are still electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” “Keep On Loving You,” “Take It On the Run,” and many, many more.

Train is a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning, diamond-selling band from San Francisco that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and 13 albums on the Billboard 200 chart. Train’s climb to the top began in 1994, as the original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal hometown following, leading up to their debut self-titled album released by Columbia in 1998. The group won another GRAMMY in 2011 for their global hit “Hey, Soul Sister” from their multi-platinum album  Save Me, San Francisco  (2009), which was the No.1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum, and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.

Train has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide, with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three GRAMMY Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, and dozens of other honors. Event Details

Train is a multi-GRAMMY Award-winning, diamond-selling band from San Francisco that has had 14 songs on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and 13 albums on the Billboard 200 chart . Train's climb to the top began in 1994, as the original 5-member band tenaciously built a loyal hometown following, leading up to their debut self-titled album released by Columbia in 1998. The tumbling wordplay of "Meet Virginia'' gave them their first unlikely radio hit, and 2001’s Drops of Jupiter broke them to multi-platinum status thanks to the double-GRAMMY-winning title song that spent 10 months in the Top 40, has been certified RIAA 7x platinum, and earned the 2001 GRAMMY Award for Best Rock Song. The group won another GRAMMY in 2011 for their global hit “Hey, Soul Sister'' from their multi-platinum album Save Me, San Francisco (2009), which was the No.1 best-selling smash and most downloaded single of 2010, achieved RIAA Diamond status in 2021 and now 11x platinum , and in 2022 surpassed one billion streams on Spotify. Train has sold more than 10 million albums and 30 million tracks worldwide, with multiple platinum/gold citations, including three GRAMMY Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, and dozens of other honors. They’ve had 24 Top 10 songs across the Billboard charts and six Top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 chart including Drops of Jupiter (2001), My Private Nation (2003), California 37 (2012), Bulletproof Picasso (2014), For Me, It's You (2016), and a girl a bottle a boat (2017). Train released their critically acclaimed 11th studio album, AM Gold , in May 2022 and most recently released a new song "I Know" ft. Tenille Townes and Bryce Vine, which marked their 27th career entry on Billboard’s Adult Pop Airplay chart.

Thursday Night Mowing League 2024: Week 5 -- Super Bowl Champion Joins The League

Welcome to our first super bowl champion league member - lomas brown.

Let me start this week by welcoming a former elite NFL road grader and pass protector to the league. Lomas Brown sent in his first TNML contribution on Thursday, via my old friend Anthony Bellino, who is radio partners with Super Bowl champion (S.B. XXXVII with Tampa) on WJR-AM in Detroit.

I don't know exactly how this all went down, but I have a hunch Bellino has been talking about TNML and he knows Lomas takes pride in his property. One thing leads to another and Lomas is declaring his allegiance to the best night in mowing.

I'll speak for the league: We're honored to have a guy like Lomas joining the group. While I've never personally met Lomas, I hear enough from Bellino to know that we got ourselves a good one.

While Lomas is the first Super Bowl champion to join the league, he's not the first former NFL guy to be enamored by the prestige of TNML. That goes to a former BCS champion who won Bednarik and Butkus trophies.

The lesson here is that there are eyes on this league and your efforts to take pride in your property and community aren't going unnoticed. You're playing against guys who've been icons on the field. Now you're icons of mowing that they're trying to beat.

Commissioner's report:

I'm in a tough spot right now. Without taking an official measurement, I believe my mower deck is at 4 ½ inches. That's a recipe for disaster this time of year when we're getting waves of rain followed by sun and humidity. The turf is EXPLODING.

It will be nice when we can settle back into a once-a-week pattern.

The other big news is that we had our very first frog in the garden – that we know of. Mrs. TNML is a huge fan of frogs, so it was a big week around here. She'll be talking about that for years.

League standings:

  • Fink, Diesel and Timmy2Cuts staying as the top three
  • Colt Bradford stays in the No. 4 slot because I'm not penalizing for missing a week due to rainouts.
  • Justin E. in GA slides into the No. 5 slot because he got it done on league night and by done I mean he got his backyard Par 3 hole dialed in for a big weekend in Augusta where there's a backyard Par 3 challenge.
  • That's what Adam Dolezal was up against. It's tough to stay in the top five week after week. The good news for Dolezal is that Justin E. in GA slows down a little when the heat builds. That No. 5 slot will keep revolving.

BUY! BUY! BUY!

The Polo of the Summer IS BACK! All sizes are in, orders are going out 5/21. Get the fit of the year, get your golf shirts dialed in for the summer.

The Make Lawns Great Again t-shirt is also back in stock. Get it, get comfortable and get dialed in for those nights on the patio when you want to suck down a beer in comfort.

- Mark R. reports:

Our first patio night of the summer. My wife and her friend and yacht rock. I hope you’ll love that I asked my landscape company to mow our lawn on Thursdays. It’s the best I can do. They said ok!! Ha.

- Tim G. in the 419 writes:

Had a very wet 5.5" mow of 2 1/3 acres of my side yard (we call it the field) that doesn’t get mowed as often as the 2 1/2 acre yard by the house. Had 1" of rain Tuesday and Wednesday so some of it was too wet to get on. I’ve been able to get all of the property mowed at various times this spring, but still have not had a full 5-acre mow yet here in the 419. The ExMark mower, the DeWalt headphones, the David sunflower seeds and the post-mow Mich Ultra always help make Thursdays wonderful!

- Indy Daryl checks in:

Started in the sun and finished with a light sprinkle. Wish I could say lawn is dialed in but at this point I am just happy I am 5/5 on league night! Wore the OG shirt, now into its third full season of use. Can’t state how much I enjoy it! Have a great mow tonight!

Orcas again sink yacht near Strait of Gibraltar as high-risk season looms

Two people were rescued after orcas hit the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac 14 miles off the coast of Morocco, the 26th orca encounter in the region this year.

yacht rock revue summer 2024

The boat-sinking orcas are back.

Around 9 a.m. Sunday near the Strait of Gibraltar, two people on board the roughly 50-foot Alboran Cognac reported blows to the vessel’s hull and saw damage to the rudder as water flowed into the ship, Spain’s maritime rescue agency said.

An unknown number of killer whales had struck again, after hundreds of such encounters in recent years.

Over the radio, responders told the two individuals to put on their life jackets, make sure their GPS locaters were turned on and prepare for emergency evacuation. In the meantime, Spanish and Moroccan rescue agencies began urgently working to save them, locating a nearby oil tanker and electing not to dispatch a helicopter.

After about an hour, that tanker rescued the pair 14 miles off Cape Spartel in northern Morocco, the Spanish Maritime Safety and Rescue Agency (SASEMAR) said in a news release. The boat was left adrift and soon sank.

Spain-based Alboran Charter confirmed its ownership of the sunken vessel and said the individuals were customers. The company declined to say more about what happened or who the clients were.

Iberian orcas sinking a ship is not new. Over the past four years, at least 15 orcas have interacted with hundreds of boats sailing in the waters off Portugal, Spain and Morocco, sinking a handful of vessels in seemingly coordinated ambushes. Some ships have been found with teeth marks; others appear to have been rammed by an orca’s head or body.

On average, there have been 168 interactions each year since 2020, according to Grupo de Trabajo Orca Atlántica, or GTOA, a research group studying the region’s killer whales. GTOA has tracked 26 interactions so far this year, down from 61 through a similar time frame in 2023.

It’s not clear why the orcas have recently bumped, bitten and sank vessels. Some scientists say they are simply being playful, or maybe are curious, or perhaps are coming after boats because of a loss of prey. A handful say the actions could actually be gratifying to the whales.

A leading theory, though, is one of vengeance.

This idea, advanced by a scientist who has studied the encounters, posits that a female orca suffered a traumatic run-in with a boat that led her to start attacking the vessels. And because orcas are intelligent marine mammals that learn behaviors like hunting together, others followed.

But there is disagreement over this theory.

Some scientists argue that the incidents shouldn’t be called “attacks” without knowing the whales’ motives. They fear that label could prompt retaliation by boaters, calling it potentially “harmful” to the critically endangered species with just a few dozen members.

“Science cannot yet explain why the Iberian orcas are doing this, although we repeat that it is more likely related to play/socialising than aggression,” a group of more than 30 scientists wrote in an open letter last summer. “ … When we are at sea, we are in the realm of marine life. We should not punish wildlife for being wild.”

The letter explained that orcas have been observed developing “cultural ‘fads,’” including carrying dead fish on their heads, and the incidents with the boats may be nothing more than a “fashion trend.”

SASEMAR warned that the risk of the encounters is highest between May and August, recommending that boats avoid the area between the Strait of Gibraltar to the Gulf of Cádiz to its west. It added that if a boat comes across orcas, it should not stop moving, and instead should head toward the coast and shallower waters. People should not approach the side of the boat and are barred from using measures that could injure or kill the whales.

“It is possible the behaviour, as previous fads have,” the scientists wrote, “will disappear as suddenly as it appeared.”
