J/22 is a 22 ′ 6 ″ / 6.9 m monohull sailboat designed by Rod Johnstone and built by J Boats and Waterline Systems, LLC starting in 1983.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Inside the Classes: J/22

  • By David Reed
  • Updated: May 6, 2018

As the local J/22 class measurer, Jeffrey Todd, of Annapolis, Maryland, knows the boats far more intimately than he may want to admit. Some say he can practically measure one simply by looking at it on its trailer. He’ll honestly tell you there’s not much difference between them, but still, he knows a fast boat when it shows up on the market.

“From the old TPI built boats there are some good one,” he says. The same is true of those built by Waterline Systems, the last U.S. builder to pull boats from the mold. “There are no superfast boats, but good boats are spread around.” One major difference between the two builders’ runs, he says, are that the mast steps are different. As a result, headstay length is a key measurement and mast rake is something an owner can experiment with.

Introduced in 1983 and now numbering nearly 1,700 boats worldwide, the J/22 is the type of boat that Todd says one can buy and fix up inexpensively. “[A used boat] could be anywhere from 5 to 20 thousand dollars, depending upon on how well it’s been maintained,” he says. “All you have to do is check the bulkheads for water damage, and other than that it’s simple boat to get into.”

Annapolis 2018 NOOD Regatta sailing race

Technical differences on the water come down to having a good set of sails and the rig tune right. But sometimes, he adds, the differences are substantial: “We seem to want to have the keel forward these days,” says Todd. “It’s like the J/24 in that you are always trying to get the keel forward. The boats don’t have a lot of helm so you create it with rake.”

Todd bought his first J/22 in 2004, getting out of the more demanding Melges 24, in advance of the J/22 World Championship that same year. “We finished 22nd and they did two fleets. It was always Annapolis-type conditions with current, windshifts, and the wind up and down, but we were very new. It was a lot of fun, a good experience.”

The simplicity of the J/22 is its greatest appeal, says Todd, but that doesn’t prevent the top guys from extracting the one-percent speed advantage, which ultimately makes a difference around the race track.

“They’re simple, yes, but we’re some of the older guys in the fleet and try and share our knowledge. A lot of yacht clubs around the country are buying J/22s as club boats so we’re losing some of our used boats to the clubs.” It’s harder today, therefore, to find one.”

As to his own desire to join the J/22 ranks, Todd says it was an opportunity to get back to boat that was easier to sail and required fewer crew. “It’s faster than the Sonar and it handles a bit better,” he says. “It’s a great little boat to sail; fun and lively with no engine so we have to sail in and out.”

Annapolis 2018 NOOD Regatta sailing race

In terms of boatspeed and success in J/22 racing, Todd reinforces the importance of rig tune. “A lot of it is mast rake on your particular boat,” he says. There are good tuning guides to start with then it’s a matter of finding the best sailing characteristics of your boat. “Rake is the hardest thing to calibrate in, but once it’s set, you don’t have to mess with it that much.”

It’s a well-traveled class as well, with championships north, south, east, and west, and for Todd, regatta travel has given he and his longtime teammates many a memorable week on the road. His favorite sailing sojourn was a recent class championship in Kingston, Ontario in Canada. “The wind and waves were fun,” says Todd, “but so too was finishing third overall, his best finish at a world championship in Buffalo, New York.

The J/22 World Championships are in September, with 40 something boats entered months out from the first race. Todd is hopeful it gets up to 75 or so and that would be plenty of competition for the already hypercompetitive team. “It should be a good event. I’m the measurement coordinator for the event, so I get to make sure the boats are up to snuff and then sail the event myself.”

Chum salmon Oncorhynchus keta from the Tugur River of Khabarovsk krai was studied. It was found that, in the river basin, chum salmon of two ecological groups reproduces: the first spawns at river sections with a pronounced underflow and the second spawns at river sections with a groundwater outlet. In the first anadromous migration, usually three maxima of the number of approaches of migrating fish are observed. The first in time maximum is represented by early (or summer) chum salmon, the second includes migrants of early and late (or autumn) form, and the third is represented by chum salmon of only late form. Forms of chum salmon from the Tugur River basin different in dates of the run and the spawning sites differ not only in the ecology of reproduction but also in biological indices. The later chum salmon is larger; its gonads at entry into the river for spawning are less mature as compared with early chum salmon. The autumn form of chum salmon reproducing at key spawning grounds is distributed more widely than the summer form. It is found along the Asian coast from Chukotka in the north to Japan and Korea in the south. Summer chum salmon occupies only part of the range of the autumn form.

WEATHER ALERT

9 warnings and an advisory in effect for 22 regions in the area

No timeline given for when pelican island bridge will re-open after oil-carrying barge strike in galveston.

T.J. Parker , Reporter

Ahmed Humble , Digital Content Producer

GALVESTON, Texas – The investigation continued Thursday morning on the Pelican Island Bridge after a barge carrying 30,000 barrels of vacuum gas oil , hit the causeway the day before, spilling oil into the Galveston bay.

The bridge has been closed since Wednesday afternoon, except for people who can cross by foot.

BACKGROUND: Fuel barge crashes into Galveston bridge, spilling oil and causing ‘major disruption’ in road, water traffic

KPRC 2 reporter T.J. Parker was out on the scene, where he said that the oil has to be cleaned up and the barge still needs to be removed before divers can inspect the pilings and the structural integrity. There did not appear to be a timeline, however, for when that will happen.

As you can imagine this has been quite a headache for people here on Pelican Island, trying to come and go with vehicle traffic backed up as hundreds, who were estimated to have been on the island tried leaving. The other big thing they’re dealing with besides the bridge closure is the spill response.

Several agencies are working on this scene, but the Texas General Land Office (GLO) is leading the investigation. GLO officials say their first priority is the safety of the public and responders. They then will work with response partners to control the source, and contain, as well as recover the spilled material.

PREVIOUS: Evacuations resume on Pelican Island Causeway following barge strike

As far as what’s leaking, it’s Vacuum Gas Oil, which is processed crude oil. Whatever spill has occurred can be treated like a crude oil spill and there are standard procedures to control it. Experts tell us the oil may be harmful if swallowed or enters airways. It is estimated that up to 5,000 gallons of oil leaked, forcing a 6.5-mile closure of the Gulf Intercoastal Waterway, causing all classes at Texas A&M University to be canceled.

Federal and state crews, as of Thursday morning, are still assessing how much damage the oil spill may have caused. The U.S. Coast Guard and state officials are also investigating reports of pollution but the full damage extent is still unknown.

KPRC 2′s T.J. Parker has reached out to the company that owns the barge, but as of this writing, has not heard back.

J.P. Crawford Doesn't Travel to Baltimore, Team Unsure of Activation Date

Brady farkas | may 16, 2024.

Apr 23, 2024; Arlington, Texas, USA; Seattle Mariners shortstop J.P. Crawford (3) scores against the Rangers.

  • Seattle Mariners

Just because the Seattle Mariners dodged major damage with regards to J.P. Crawfords hand/wrist, it doesn't mean that Crawford is instantly coming back from the injured list.

The M's shortstop had been rehabbing an oblique injury at Triple-A Tacoma on Wednesday and was likely set to be activated before Friday's game, but now the team is unsure of when he'll be back.

Per Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times, Crawford didn't even travel to Baltimore with the team.

JP Crawford didn’t fly to Baltimore today. His hand is still sore and a little swollen after getting hit by a pitch. The Mariners aren’t certain when he will join the team

JP Crawford didn’t fly to Baltimore today. His hand is still sore and a little swollen after getting hit by a pitch. The Mariners aren’t certain when he will join the team — Ryan Divish (@RyanDivish) May 16, 2024

That's an unfortunate development for the M's, as they'd really like to be at full strength heading into this grueling 10-day road trip that will see them take on the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees and Washington Nationals. In addition to Crawford not being ready, the team is also dealing with injury issues to Jorge Polanco (hamstring) and Mitch Garver (back spasms).

Furthermore, no Crawford means that Dylan Moore needs to continue to play shortstop, when he likely is best served playing in a utility role.

Crawford was out to a slow start this season, hitting just .198 with two home runs through his first 86 at-bats, but he is a catalyst of the M's lineup and a leader defensively that they certainly need back.

In his eighth year in the big leagues, Crawford is a career .250 hitter who really had a nice year in 2023. He hit .266, popped a career-high 19 homers and led the American League in walks with 94. He was acquired by Seattle before the 2019 season in a deal with the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Mariners play the Orioles on Friday at 7:05 p.m. ET.

Take a look at the 'Mighty Dragon,' China's $120 million stealth fighter meant to rival the US Air Force's fifth-gen jets

  • The Chengdu J-20 is China's most advanced stealth fighter jet.
  • The J-20 reportedly had several encounters with the US-made Lockheed Martin F-35 jets in 2020.
  • The Chinese air force has a fleet of more than 200 J-20 jets — and the figure is only expected to grow.

The Chengdu J-20 is China's most advanced stealth fighter.

sailboatdata j 22

The jet, nicknamed the "Mighty Dragon," was introduced to China's People's Liberation Army Air Force in March 2017. Manufactured by the Sichuan-based Chengdu Aircraft Industry Group, the jet is considered one of China's most advanced military weapons.

It debuted in November 2016 at the Zhuhai Air Show in Guangdong, China.

The J-20 is only the world's third fifth-generation fighter jet in history, after the US-made Lockheed Martin F-22 and F-35 jets . According to an analysis of the aircraft's serial numbers, as of 2023, the Chinese air force has a fleet of more than 200 J-20 jets — and the figure is only expected to grow .

The Chinese jet has drawn comparisons to the F-35 since the jets were locked in military encounters in 2020.

sailboatdata j 22

The F-35 jet was introduced to the US military in July 2015. There are three variants of the jet: the conventional takeoff and landing F-35A , the short takeoff and vertical landing F-35B , and the carrier-based F-35C . The variants are differentiated by how the jet takes off and lands.

Lockheed Martin touts the F-35 as the " most advanced fighter jet in the world ," with very low observable stealth, advanced sensors, information fusion, and network connectivity.

But there's stiff competition from the J-20.

The F-35's close encounters with the J-20 in the East China Sea in 2022 impressed a top US Air Force general, the South China Morning Post reported.

Gen. Kenneth Wilsbach, the head of US Pacific Air Forces, said in 2022 that the US had some impressions of the J-20's performance and was tepid about its capabilities.

"It's not anything to lose a lot of sleep over, but they seem to be a building a lot of them, and certainly, we're watching them closely," Wilsbach said.

The J-20 is a long, wide aircraft, measuring 23 meters in length and 5 meters in height.

The jet is believed to have a maximum speed of 2,468 kph and a travel range of 5,926 kilometers, according to the aviation website Aero Corner . By comparison, the F-35A has a maximum speed of 1,960 kph and a range of 2,200 kilometers, according to the Royal Australian Air Force .

The J-20 is an enigma and Western estimates of its capabilities range widely.

There are several variants of the J-20.

sailboatdata j 22

Some notable variants are the J-20A, the first version of the jet, the thrust-vectoring J-20B, and the J-20S, the first twin-seat stealth fighter jet.

China is working on upgrading the J-20 by increasing the number of missiles it can carry and installing thrust-vectoring engine nozzles, according to the Pentagon's China Military Power Report released last October.

The J-20 was initially fitted with Russian-built engines.

sailboatdata j 22

China later developed the Shenyang WS-10 engine to lessen its dependency on Russia for fighter aircraft engines.

Last summer, video footage of J-20 test flights led to speculation that the PLAAF equipped its Might Dragon fleet with a more advanced WS-15 turbofan engine. China has struggled to build an engine capable of sustaining supersonic speeds without an afterburner similar to that of the US F-22 Raptor.

"No one wants the Chinese to become capable of designing and building their own jet engines," a retired intelligence officer from a NATO country told Breaking Defense in 2023 . "It would move the threat marker as to their air power capability up more than just a couple of notches. But they seem to be close to that goal whether we want them to be or not."

The jet costs between $100 million and $120 million a unit, according to The EurAsian Times.

sailboatdata j 22

In the early 2000s, the preliminary cost of the jet was quoted to be 450 million to 500 million Chinese yuan, or about $60 million to $70 million, The Diplomat reported. According to estimates from multiple reports, the cost of the jet has increased significantly since then.

The jet's research and development cost was estimated to cost over 30 billion yuan, the South China Morning Post reported.

  1. J/22

LENGTH: Traditionally, LOA (length over all) equaled hull length. Today, many builders use LOA to include rail overhangs, bowsprits, etc. and LOD (length on deck) for hull length. That said, LOA may still mean LOD if the builder is being honest and using accepted industry standards developed by groups like the ABYC (American Boat and Yacht Council).
