INTRODUCTION:

MAGNOLIA was built with the U –shaped dinette to port that converts to a double berth, providing 7 sleeping berths with the settee and pilot berth to starboard, quarter berth and forward v-berth.  Her comfortable and light interior is in excellent condition and on deck she is laid out with a large, comfortable cockpit and well thought out deck design.  Well worth making the effort to see if looking for a nice SW42.

CONSTRUCTION:

Hull is constructed from a hand laid laminate of blister resistant vinylester resin reinforced with a knit hybrid fabric of Kevlar/E-glass. A foam core is vacuum bagged into the laminate to provide the greatest degree of stiffness and thermal/acoustic insulation possible. This core is removed and additional layers of fiberglass are added in stress areas such as hull/deck connecting flange, centerline, keel, chainplates, rudder post, and all thru-hull fittings. A fiberglass hull stringer system is bonded to the hull and integrated with the mast step and engine mounts to form a single unit that is strong and light. Marelon ball-valve type seacocks are installed flush with hull.

Molded external lead keel (provides protection in the event of grounding) is secured to the hull with 1" stainless steel bolts.  The Centerboard is raised and lowered with a low stretch line that leads to a winch in the cockpit.  Guard rail at sheer is varnished on top and Awlgripped on the bottom and has stainless steel half oval.

The Deck is a one piece fiberglass molding which incorporates a hybrid knit fabric of Kevlar/E-glass to reduce weight and a core of cross-linked close celled PVC foam. The core is deleted and replaced with solid layers of reinforcing fiberglass in the way of major penetrations and stress areas. The 5 1/2" hull deck flange is laid up to receive the deck, and they are bonded together to assure a strong, permanent, water tight hull/deck joint.

Description.

The Switch 51 is a classic high-performance world voyager designed by VPLP. She was built with high-tech materials for discriminating sailors at Sud Composites in Ste, France. Sud built 18 of these fine performance catamarans from 2001-2007, at which time the yard was taken over by Swiss Cat, another fine builder of boutique performance cats.

The current owner purchased Holokai in early 2021 and undertook a complete refit of the boat. Everything on the boat is new. Over $500,000 has been invested in the boat in the last 3 years:

New engines and sail drives New standing and running rigging New sails New Lithium battery system New air-conditioning New solar panels New electronics andradar New tender and outboard New watermaker New marelon sea cocks And much much more!

This boat is in fantastic condition just having finished a season of cruising in the Caribbean. The boat is available to be viewed in Fort Lauderdale immediately.

By GREG DIXON You might like to know that George Johns has a new seagull record. For 4min 28sec last week the yacht racing cameraman filmed one of the ubiquitous seabirds, his high-tech, remote-controlled camera tracking it as it circled over the sloppy, choppy soup of the Hauraki Gulf. His previous best time was about half that, he tells me as he scoffs chips and relaxes while TVNZ's camera chase boat, Into The Blue, heads home after another day without a Louis Vuitton Cup race being sailed. To the landlubber, this might seem a bizarre use for the multi-million dollar resources floating there and packed into rooms at TVNZ's IBC, the host broadcast centre back in downtown Auckland. But it's the sort of thing Johns must do while waiting, as we did for three hours this day, for the winds to drop under 19 knots so that the race — already cancelled twice — can get under way. While there's still a chance the Flash Harry yachts might race, Johns must provide live images for TVNZ and international networks taking cup coverage. Commentators must have something to talk over while they and everyone else waits for the action to start. "It's the hardest part of the job," the 36-year-old says. "If there's been a postponement for too little or too much wind we've got to shoot what there is: other boats, people fishing, dogs, girls in bikinis, seagulls. With the weather being what it is at this time of year, there have been more than a few days like this." Which has meant a lot of seagull footage and close-ups of spectator craft. This day these include Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison's enormous Katana, a sort of Bond movie leftover featuring — and this an odd sight at sea — a basketball hoop near the stern (Yes, Mr Bond, I'm going to slam dunk you to death). But this isn't what Johns, a yachting specialist who has covered three America's Cups, is out here for. During the early rounds of the Louis Vuitton, Into The Blue, a helicopter and self-cleaning cameras onboard the racing yachts beam back live pictures to the IBC via the ANZ Tower, and then on to the world. When the racing actually gets under way, Into The Blue is the closest boat to the yachts as it moves in to capture close-up action shots of these sleek, creaky monsters as they tack and jibe towards victory or defeat. This proximity is undoubtedly why someone paid $16,000 for a day on Into The Blue at the recent fundraising auction for Team New Zealand. "And that doesn't include lunch," Johns tells me with a grin. It has plenty of grunt, has Into The Blue. Her owner and skipper, Peter Behrent, who has chartered the boat to TVNZ for the duration of the cup, tells me the $900,000 power cat has twin 315-horsepower engines. These are barely needed as the boat chuffs up and down the course with the yachts. It is the cameras on the bow and the stern that do the real business. Worth $1.03 million each ("they tripled the value of the boat," Johns laughs), these ball-shaped Gyron cameras are able to move freely around 360 degrees and are fitted with powerful zoom lenses. Attached to large-ish titanium tube rigs, they look for all the world like giant eyeballs atop jungle gyms. During the racing (or filming seagulls), Johns sits on the boat's top deck in a specially made mini-broadcast booth staring at monitors and moving the cameras with what look like oversized videogame controllers. It sounds easy, it isn't. Johns must be in communication with the director back at the IBC, Into The Blue's skipper and be aware of where the helicopter (which also has a Gyron) is, while at the same time tracking the racing yachts, picking and framing shots and operating the remote control. And all this, without a break, for three hours or more. "It's like playing a virtual chess game: you have to remember where everyone is. You've got to have a sixth sense about what the boats are going to do. I'm still practising and I've been a cameraman for 16 years and working with these cameras for 10." Johns is one of the best there is at filming yacht racing, says Denis Harvey, TVNZ's head of production and sport, the following day. "What other camera operator has to deal with what George does? And for this event we've had to find half a dozen cameramen who can do that, not just one. And it's day after day for, potentially, 60 race days." The charming Harvey's also a veteran. This is his fourth cup and he's been in charge of covering yachting at the Atlanta and Sydney, Olympics, helping TVNZ to become the pre-eminent broadcaster in the sport. "Other than multi-discipline events like the Olympics, I think doing sailing at this level on television is probably the most technically difficult of any sports [coverage] in the world," Harvey says. "You're in the worst possible environment in terms of weather and salt water. You don't have a defined field of play, it's shifting constantly. And there is nothing connected to a camera. "Everything is in the ether. I wake up at night thinking, 'God, nothing's connected to anything'. The whole event floats in the air." TVNZ is contracted to provide facilities, footage and equipment to international broadcasters here to follow their country's entry in the regatta. Using often custom-built gear and computer software, the camera operators and IBC generate pictures and graphics in a series of rabbit-warren studios next door to TVNZ's main building on Hobson St. It takes a huge cast. Come the semifinals, Harvey's host broadcast team will peak at 76 people so that both the day's races will be covered. During America's Cup racing, the complexity of coverage increases threefold. Putting it together has the feel of a church meeting. That's the mood in Production Control Room One on the morning after that cancelled race, when Mascalzone Latino and Prada are finally sailing. In this darkened room, with its bank of monitors, hardly a word is heard. Mostly it's the sounds of creaking boats and shouting sailors with the studio's director periodically calling out shot changes. On one small screen, I can see what Johns is seeing today. He's pulling in close, pulling out, helping to tell the story of this race. And, thankfully, there's not a seagull in sight. nzherald.co.nz/americascup Racing schedule, results and standings

Interior Accommodations and Layout

INDEPENDENCE has a four-cabin layout with a large VIP stateroom forward, a double guest cabin forward and to port, a guest/crew cabin with over under bunks off the aft starboard passageway, and a sizeable master stateroom aft. The VIP, guest/crew, and master staterooms feature ensuite private heads.

The main salon of INDEPENDENCE is an oasis on the water. A notable feature is the newer styling of the raised salon windows, through which natural light fills the main salon. The tasteful, contemporary styling of the yacht was accomplished with the advisement of Merle Stewart Design in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Custom soft goods, pillows, throws, and tucked leatherette upholstery make for a very appealing and welcoming interior.

The galley is located aft and to the port of the main salon. It features a large walkthrough layout with top-of-the-line appliances and numerous unique features designed to enhance your and your guest's enjoyment and comfort aboard the yacht. To starboard is a functional navigator station with a wrap-around deck and a full complement of equipment designed for global voyaging.

  • Teak joinery with satin varnish finishes in the main salon, galley, and living quarters.
  • White Oak walls and joinery in the heads with complimenting dark teak accents and trim
  • Blue Pearl granite countertop surfaces and backsplashes in the galley and heads
  • Merle Steward Designs of Fort LauderdaleTucked Leatherette upholstery in the main salon

  • Teak grab rails and fiddled surfaces for traversing the interior while underway
  • Isolus 2.5" liquid gel memory foam mattress toppers with custom covers for each berth

The main salon of INDEPENDENCE is both spacious and bright as a result of her 18 ft. beam; large wrap-around raised salon windows, two large deck hatches, and fixed hull windows. An L-shaped settee wraps around the large custom teak table with ebony, and holy compass rose inlay to port. Inboard, two folding bench seats with tie-down anchors can be installed for additional seating or serve as cocktail tables with the cushions removed. To starboard is a full-length settee with a coffee table. Outboard of both settees, cabinets, and bookshelves provide storage.

Forward VIP Stateroom

Guests will appreciate the comfort and luxury of the large forward VIP stateroom with its island centerline queen berth, an abundance of storage, and ensuite access to the forward head and shower. The stateroom is inviting, with natural light entering through the forward hull windows and a large deck hatch with teak trim and screen.

Above and on either side of the berth are several cabinets, bookshelves, and fiddled shelving. At the foot of the berth are two huge drawers. To starboard is a tall hanging locker, and to port is a wardrobe with a bank of three drawers below.

VIP Ensuite Head and Day Head with Shared Shower

The ensuite head for the VIP stateroom and day head, accessible by the forward passageway, features three mirrored medicine cabinets, fiddled granite countertops and backsplash, a sink, and Jabsco freshwater electric flush toilets. Both heads share a stall shower equipped with a linen closet outboard and teak shower grate and seat. Ventilation is provided by two 3-speed Bora fans and three opening portlights.

Forward Guest Stateroom

The guest cabin is located forward of the main salon and to port. The comfortable double cabin features a sizeable Pullman style berth and convenient access to the forward head across the passageway. Three large cabinets outboard, a wardrobe forward, and a nightstand with fiddled shelving and drawers offer ample storage. This is a light and well-ventilated cabin with three opening portlights, a large screened deck hatch, and a dorade vent overhead.

Under the berth are a full-size washing machine and a separate dryer. This has proven to be very convenient and highly desirable when cruising. The water maker is also housed here and includes a custom enclosure designed to allow the storage of items in the locker without fear of damaging the components.

Aft Guest/Crew Cabin

Designed for crew accommodations but used more frequently by the current owner for when the grandchildren are aboard, the aft guest/crew cabin is accessed through the aft passageway and features over-under single bunks with drawers beneath, a tall hanging locker, two opening portlights, as well as reading lights and a 3-speed Bora fan for each berth. Ensuite head with separate stall shower.

Aft Head with Ensuite Access from the Guest/Crew Cabin and Master Stateroom

Aft and to starboard, the aft head is accessible from both the guest/crew cabin and the master stateroom. This head includes three mirrored medicine cabinets, a sink, Jabsco freshwater electric flush toilet, a separate stall shower with a teak grate, a shower seat, and a linen closet. A 3-speed Bora fan and opening portlights in both the head and shower for ventilation.

Master Stateroom

With the beam of the Hylas 70 carried well aft, the master stateroom of INDEPENDENCE is especially large and spacious. The centerline island berth has a width of 66 in. and is very comfortable thanks to the Isolus liquid gel memory foam mattress topper and elegant designer bedding with high thread count. Two large deck hatches with OceanAir screens and shades and two opening portlights provide excellent natural light and ventilation.

Storage and personal space are superb with his and her wardrobes, cabinets, desktop surfaces, and drawers to port and starboard. Additional cabinets and nightstands with fiddled shelving are located at the head of the berth. A bank of three drawers is situated at the foot of the berth and on the forward bulkhead. One great feature of the master stateroom is the dual ensuite heads. This configuration allows access to both the private aft head and the guest/crew cabin head.

Private Head Ensuite to Master Stateroom

A private owner's head to port with four mirrored medicine cabinets, a tall linen closet, sink, granite countertops and backsplash, Jabsco fresh water electric flush toilet, and a spacious stall shower with a teak shower grate and seat. Two opening portlights and a 3-speed Bora fan provide ventilation.

INDEPENDENCE features four heads and three separate stall showers; a forward head ensuite for the VIP stateroom, which shares a stall shower with the day head, and an ensuite head with stall shower for the aft guest/crew cabin, which is also accessible from the master stateroom, and the owners private head with stall shower ensuite to master stateroom.

To accentuate the size and space of each head, White Oak was selected for its lighter tone and more subdued grain. The countertops and backsplash are Blue Pearl granite with White Oak fiddles. The headliner, shower frames, towel racks, and linen closets are trimmed with a selection of dark teak for a pleasing contrast to the White Oak and the Bamboo sole with teak stringers.

  • (4) Jabsco fresh water electric flush heads

Construction and Key Design Features of the Hull and Deck

The hull of INDEPENDENCE is constructed of solid, hand-laid, Twaron carbon aramid fiber reinforced GRP utilizing Vinylester resins and Isophthalic gel coat. Five layers of epoxy Interprotect and an additional three coats of bottom paint ensure superior protection against osmosis. The hull was designed with two watertight bulkheads; a collision bulkhead at the bow and a watertight stern section across the aft lazarettes. The hull is nearly flawless, with a white gel coat, blue cove, double boot stripes, a natural teak rub rail with stainless steel striker, and black bottom paint. The rudder incorporates a 60% partial skeg, with the bottom of the rudder plane designed to be above the lowest point of the keel for grounding protection.

Bottom Paint - Micron CSC completed in March 2023

The deck comprises hand-laid laminates with a ¾ in. end-grain balsa core. In areas of high stress, such as where deck fittings take compressive or tensile forces, the deck is solid fiberglass. The hull to deck joint is chemically bonded with 3M 5200 and mechanically fastened with stainless steel through bolts.

The bow is well protected with a substantial 316 stainless steel stem fitting with a striker plate and double bow roller, a signature feature of every Hylas Yacht. The forepeak is a near 10 ft deep sail locker with a segmented chain locker.

At the transom, an additional stainless-steel plate offers protection for the stern. The swim platform has LED courtesy lights and stainless steel handrails, a shower, and a folding swim ladder, perfect for the enjoyment of water activities. A sizeable stern garage provides impressive storage space and ample room for a dive compressor and scuba equipment. Two large lazarettes are located to port and starboard. All deck lockers have Baily latches and independent overboard drains.

The bonded teak deck has light-colored caulking that is modern and aesthetically pleasing and ensures the deck is substantially cooler than a traditional teak deck. The toe rail and handrails on deck are natural teak. Seven Manship stainless steel low-profile hatches, eighteen opening portlights with screen inserts, four flush hatches, and two dorade boxes with stainless cowlings provide excellent ventilation below. The stern rail extends to midship. The stanchions with uncoated double lifelines, over 33 inches high and 1 ½ inch in diameter, with substantial backing for safety at sea and comfort while moving about the deck.

  • The only H70 for sale today with the more modern styled raised salon windows, an updated design more in line with the current generation of Hylas yachts.

Helm Stations and Cockpit Lounge

One of the best features of INDEPENDENCE is the large lounge-style cockpit with walkthrough access from the aft deck. Open and spacious, yet uncompromising toward the qualities which make for a serious offshore sailing yacht, such as foot bracing when the yacht heels, tall and comfortable backrests, and a dry and well-protected cockpit environment in foul weather. In the center of the lounge, a beautiful high gloss varnished cockpit table with dual leaves and a built-in ice chest makes for a fantastic, al fresco dining experience for up to twelve.

The full-length tan Sunbrella bimini and soft dodger (New 2021) are joined with a connector piece that, when removed, allows a nice breeze through the cockpit. For foul weather, a full Eisenglass enclosure can quickly be installed. The removable side shade awnings on warm sunny days at anchor offer extra protection. Andy's Canvas of Fort Lauderdale, Florida constructed all canvas, including the coordinating cover for the cockpit table, winches, hatch, and dinghy covers.

The dual helm stations offer excellent sightlines and clear visibility of the sails, easy access to sail controls, bow and stern thruster joysticks, and navigation equipment to enable shorthanded sailing.

Sails and Winches

Engine and Mechanical Systems

As the latest Hylas 70 constructed, INDEPENDENCE has seen the lightest use and is equipped with the most modern equipment compared to any of her sisterships. Numerous improvements were incorporated into her construction to include the larger 260HP engine, desirable Northern Lights generator, separate full-size washing machine and dryer, and unique to INDEPENDENCE, both bow and stern thrusters!

Professionally maintained and operated, INDEPENDENCE has seen very light use and an exceptional level of care from the day she was commissioned.

In 2021, the engine mounts were replaced and a complete inspection and service of the shaft, strut, cutlass bearing, and prop were performed as part of the maintenance program. The generator heat exchanger was serviced, a new water pump was installed, valves adjusted, and injectors serviced.

Electrical System

Aft of the navigator station is the custom electrical distribution panel. This backlit panel is extraordinarily well organized, meticulously labeled, and is as close to perfection as you'll find. While many yacht manufacturers are moving toward "simplistic" panels, Hylas has chosen the path of keeping every system on its dedicated breaker, enabling straightforward management of each component. The wiring itself is tinned as opposed to more corrosive copper. The bonding system consists of two 3-in. copper strips integrated into the hull and running the yacht's length on either side, which is then grounded to the vessel's bronze thru-hull fittings.
