Loss of sailing cargo ship off Bahamas underscores the perils of the sea

Surviving crew members reported that they were hit by a sudden storm near the bahamas..

schooner is a sailboat stupidhead

Sea weather was fair more than a week after the 90-foot sailing schooner De Gallant departed Santa Marta, Colombia for Europe carrying a cargo of coffee, cocoa and cane sugar. But tragedy loomed on the horizon.

The crew of the De Gallant , part of a French company that ships products by sail to avoid burning fossil fuels, ran into a sudden and violent storm 20 miles north of Great Inagua, near the Bahamas. The vessel began taking on water. The crew of French sailors scrambled into yellow survival suits and into life rafts, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two female crew members, however, were missing.

On Thursday, two days after rescuing six of eight crew members in rafts floating amid a field of the sunken ship’s debris, the Coast Guard said it had called off the search for the two women after scouring 3,700 square miles with planes, helicopters and ships.

“It is with heavy hearts we offer our sincere condolences to the families and crew that lost these two mariners,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Lindsey Seniuk, who coordinated the search and rescue mission. “When we send our rescue crews out, it is with great hope we can bring people home safely, which is why suspending this case is one of the hardest decisions our personnel make. We are grateful we were able to bring home the six survivors and thankful for the assistance of our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.”

The Blue Schooner sail cargo company, which operated the vessel, did not release the names of any of the surviving crew or the missing women.

Since 2017, Blue Schooner has offered “a carbon-free solution to any producer or shipper concerned about their environmental footprint.” according to its website . Except for port maneuvers, the ship did not use fossil fuel, with on-board electricity provided by solar panels.

It’s among several companies , such as Shipped by Sail, that in recent years have adopted wind power, including on older ships, to transport products such as boutique coffees for sellers seeking to avoid the carbon emissions of typical cargo ships.

The De Gallant, a Vanuatu-flagged schooner, was a “well-proven vessel piloted by licensed professional sailors,” Blue Schooner said in a statement.

But the incident also highlighted the potential dangers that any ship can encounter at sea.

Blue Schooner noted that the weather had been fairly calm before the ship ran into trouble. A tracking map on the company’s website showed the vessel had previously traveled between Cuba and Haiti on its way north.

The Coast Guard said it first received distress notifications early Tuesday morning from personal locator beacons. About two hours later, around 8 a.m., a Coast Guard helicopter crew located two life rafts with the six French nationals and hoisted them to safety, said Petty Officer First Class Diana Sherbs, a Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami.

They were taken to the Coast Guard Air Station in Miami and found in good health before being met by French diplomatic representatives and returned to France.

Blue Schooner officials had been hopeful that warm water temperatures and clear weather would help the missing crew survive and be found. But on Thursday the company said the lack of any signs during the search forced them to consider the “worst outcome.”

“It is an upheaval for the company, the maritime community and that of sailing transport in particular, which are losing sailors and above all exceptional humans,” the company said in a statement.

The exact circumstances of the sinking were still being examined.

“The first information we have indicates an unforeseen meteorological phenomenon, extremely sudden and violent when the ship was underway in mild conditions. This would have led to its capsizing and then its loss at a depth of more than 2,000 meters,” according to Blue Schooner.

Whether the incident will have any impact on sail cargo businesses is unclear.

The De Gallant’s owners called the incident “a reminder of the dangers of navigation and the seafaring profession.”

Schooner 101: What do YOU know about the Schooner?

What better way to learn about schooners and sailing than to set sail aboard The Liberté in 2019?

While you may know that The Liberté is a schooner , do you know which qualities distinguish a schooner from other vessels sailing on the water? What better way to learn about schooners and sailing than to set sail aboard The Liberté in 2019? Before you set sail on this exciting adventure in the new year, consider these fun facts about the rich history and recognizable characteristics of a schooner!

Size and Qualities of the Schooner

A schooner is a sailboat built with a minimum of two masts. With this, the foremast is typically slightly shorter than the first or main mast. While a schooner may sometimes have more than two masts, most schooners contain only two. The size of the schooner enables it to sail upwind with ease, making for an enjoyable and efficient sail.

History of the Schooner

With striking similarities to many 17th-century Dutch ship designs, origins of the schooner are believed to be around New England during the early colonial period of the United States. Built for speed and efficiency in coastal sailing, the design of the schooner then led to the development of the famous Clipper ship design. With its origins in the Chesapeake Bay , the Clipper ship design grew in popularity as the descendant of the schooner.

Schooners and Pirates

Throughout its early history, the schooner was even known to be the preferred vessel of pirates! Because of their speed and efficiency, schooners were recognized as pirate ships sailing around the Caribbean, often holding more than 60 men at a time. In true pirate ship fashion, many schooners also contained nearly ten guns, with swivel guns included as well.

Schooners and the Adventure of Sailing

In addition to being an exciting piece of history, a schooner also offers a fun, first-time sailing experience! Not only is sailing a great way to get outside and enjoy the day, but it is also a special experience that can be shared with your friends and family aboard The Liberté . • Schooner: A Classic Sailboat with Timeless Elegance

1. Introduction

Sailing has always captivated the human imagination, and one type of sailboat that has left an indelible mark in maritime history is the schooner. With its distinctive design and graceful sails, the schooner embodies timeless elegance and the romance of the open sea. In this article, we will explore the definition of a schooner, its history, anatomy, types, famous examples, modern relevance, and more. Join us on this voyage as we delve into the world of schooners.

2. Definition of a Schooner

A schooner is a type of sailing vessel characterized by its unique sail plan. Unlike other sailboats, a schooner has multiple masts, with the forward mast being shorter than the aft mast. The sails on a schooner are typically fore-and-aft rigged, meaning they run parallel to the length of the boat, allowing for efficient sailing against the wind. Schooners come in various sizes, from small pleasure craft to large commercial vessels.

3. History and Evolution

The history of the schooner can be traced back to the early 18th century. Its design is believed to have originated in the Netherlands and spread throughout Europe and North America. The schooner quickly gained popularity due to its versatility and speed. It was widely used for various purposes, including fishing, cargo transportation, and even as private yachts for the wealthy.

4. Anatomy of a Schooner

To understand the anatomy of a schooner, let's explore its key components:

  • Hull: The hull of a schooner is the main body of the boat, providing buoyancy and stability. It can be made of wood, steel, or fiberglass.
  • Masts: A schooner typically has two or more masts, with the aft mast, known as the mainmast, being taller than the forward mast, called the foremast.
  • Sails: The sails on a schooner are arranged in a fore-and-aft configuration. Common types of sails found on a schooner include the mainsail, foresail, jib, staysail, and topsail.
  • Rigging: Schooners have intricate rigging systems that support the masts and control the sails. This includes various lines, ropes, and pulleys.
  • Deck: The deck is the horizontal surface on the schooner where crew members move and work. It may feature cabins, hatches, and other structures.
  • Steering Mechanism: Schooners use a rudder system to control their direction, allowing the sailors to navigate through the water.

5. Types of Schooners

Schooners can be classified into different types based on their size, rigging, and purpose. Some common types of schooners include:

  • Baltimore Clipper: A sleek and fast schooner popularized in the mid-19th century.
  • Gaff Topsail Schooner: A schooner with a gaff-rigged topsail, providing additional sail area.
  • Schooner Yacht: Luxurious schooners designed for pleasure sailing and racing.
  • Two-Masted Schooner: Schooners with two masts, offering a balanced sail plan.
  • Three-Masted Schooner: Larger schooners with three masts, commonly used for commercial purposes.

IMOCA 60 offshore racing sailboats grabbed the spotlight in NYC last week

Now that Cole Brauer became the first American female in history to complete a solo, nonstop, sailing circumnavigation by the three great capes when she crossed the finish line the Global Offshore Challenge earlier this year, there are way more Americans who are aware of the community of amazing, inspiring, ( often French ) and maybe even a little crazy solo sailors that race around the world on sailboats.

And now that the New York Vendée Transatlantic Race is just about to start (after a week filled with Times Square selfies, New York Yacht Club parties, sponsor events, last-minute repairs, and plenty of sunny speed runs past the Statue of Liberty), I’m sure even more Americans will be following these special competitors who are hoping to qualify for to compete in the ultimate-non-stop-around-the-world solo-offshore-sailing marathon.

NY Vendee skippers pose for a Times Square selfie prior to the start of the last Vendée Globe ... [+] qualifying race

It's simply called the Vendée Globe . It’s only held every four years. It starts in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. And because it’s one of the most extreme endurance events on the planet, you can’t just rock up to the start line with an IMOCA 60 and compete. In fact, every solo-sailor must first sail thousands of recorded miles in sanctioned events and then be selected by the race committee before being allowed to race.

Trump Trial Prosecutor Ends Closing Argument After Nearly 5 Hours Jury Instructions Set For Wednesday

Gas explosion in downtown youngstown, ohio injures at least 7, take advantage of the best memorial day laptop sales still live.

And while there are many IMOCA events skippers can use to gain qualifying miles, the New York Vendée is last qualifying race for the main event in November. But as anyone who follows this special brand of offshore sailing, every one of the long-distance-solo races that are sailed in crazy, hydrofoil-assisted IMOCA 60’s are more than just another race.

These events bring out the best in the people who compete and provide infinite inspiration for those of us following from home. And the truth is, you don’t even really need to know too much about sailing to appreciate what each sailor must overcome just to keep the boat sailing through sometimes life-threatening conditions.

Cole Brauer (left) and Boris Herrmann shoot a selfie together before the start of the NY Vendee ... [+] transatlantic race

But don’t just take my word for it. Boris Herrmann became one of the most popular offshore sailors during the previous Vendée Globe and other high-profile offshore races. And as an official Cole Brauer fan, I was excited to see Herrmann invited the aspiring Vendee Globe competitor to join his shore team.

I felt a huge appreciation for Cole’s achievements,” said Herrmann last week. “And I know how difficult that was in a Class 40, a boat harder to sail than an IMOCA 60. “It was a personal inspiration to follow her race. And I imagined having her here would give the Vendee Globe a footprint in the U.S. and we hope to see her at the Vendée Globe start in November.”

Stay tuned!

schooner is a sailboat stupidhead

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a sailboat and a schooner? If youre curious about the key features that make these two vessels different, youve come to the right place.

In this article, well cover the key differences between a sailboat and a schooner, including the types of vessels used for sailing, the masts and hulls that set them apart, and the pros and cons of each vessel.

After reading this article, youll be able to make an informed decision on which vessel is better suited for your needs.

So, lets get started!

Table of Contents

Short Answer

A sailboat is a type of boat that is powered by wind energy using sails mounted to masts.

Schooners are a type of sailboat that typically have two or more masts, with the aft mast taller than the forward mast.

Schooners typically have more sail area compared to a typical sailboat, which enables them to travel faster and farther with the same wind.

Additionally, schooners often have a longer hull than a typical sailboat, which also helps with speed and stability.

Types of Vessels Used for Sailing

When it comes to sailing, there are two types of vessels most commonly used: sailboats and schooners. Each type of vessel has its own unique characteristics that make it well-suited for certain activities. Sailboats are typically smaller and more maneuverable than schooners, making them ideal for racing or recreational sailing. On the other hand, schooners are larger and more suited for carrying cargo, making them ideal for fishing, freighting, and other commercial activities. Both types of vessels can be used for cruising and exploring, but their differences in design and operation make them better suited for different purposes.

Sailboats utilize a single hull and one or two masts to generate power.

The masts hold sails which, when filled with wind, propel the boat forward.

Sailboats come in a variety of shapes and sizes, from small dinghies to large racing yachts.

They are designed for speed and performance, and typically require a smaller crew than a schooner.

Schooners have a double hull and usually two or more masts.

They are larger and heavier than sailboats, making them better-suited for carrying cargo or heavy loads.

Schooners are more difficult to maneuver than sailboats, requiring a larger crew to manage the sails and rudders.

They are often used for fishing, freighting, and other commercial activities.

In conclusion, sailboats and schooners are two types of vessels used for sailing.

Sailboats are typically smaller and more maneuverable, while schooners are larger and better suited for carrying cargo.

Sailboats are designed for speed and performance, while schooners are more difficult to maneuver and require a larger crew.

Knowing the differences between these two types of vessels will help you choose the one that best suits your needs.

The Key Difference

schooner is a sailboat stupidhead

When it comes to sailing, it is important to understand the key difference between a sailboat and a schooner.

While both types of vessels are used for sailing, they have some distinct differences.

A sailboat typically has one or two masts and a single hull.

This hull design is more streamlined and allows for a greater speed and maneuverability.

Schooners, on the other hand, usually have two or more masts and a double hull.

The double hull makes it easier to carry cargo, but it also makes the vessel more difficult to maneuver.

Another key difference between sailboats and schooners is the purpose for which they are designed.

Sailboats are typically designed for speed and performance, while schooners are more suited for carrying cargo.

This is due in part to the double hull design of the schooner, which makes it easier to carry more weight.

Finally, sailboats are easier to maneuver and require a smaller crew, while schooners require more crew and are more difficult to maneuver.

This is due to the increased complexity of the schooner’s design and the additional masts.

Additionally, the double hull of the schooner makes it harder to move quickly and efficiently.

In conclusion, sailboats and schooners are both types of vessels used for sailing, but they have some key differences.

A sailboat typically has one or two masts and a single hull, while a schooner usually has two or more masts and a double hull.

Additionally, sailboats are typically designed for speed and performance, while schooners are more suited for carrying cargo.

Understanding these differences is essential for anyone interested in sailing.

Sailboats are an incredibly popular type of vessel used for sailing, and they come in many different shapes and sizes.

Generally speaking, sailboats are designed to be lightweight, maneuverable, and fast, with either one or two masts and a single hull.

Their hulls are usually designed with a deep keel to help them better track in the wind, and they typically feature a wide range of sails to help them reach their desired speed.

For those looking for a recreational sailboat, they come in a variety of sizes, such as small dinghies or larger vessels with multiple cabins.

Sailboats also come in a variety of styles, such as sloops, ketchs, yawls, and cutters, all of which feature different sail plans.

Modern sailboats are typically made from fiberglass, aluminum, or wood, and they are designed for performance and speed.

They usually have a wide range of features, such as self-tacking jibs, roller furling headsails, and spinnaker poles, which help them achieve their desired speed and performance.

Additionally, they are usually equipped with a variety of electronics, such as GPS systems, autopilots, and wind instruments, to make sailing easier and safer.

schooner is a sailboat stupidhead

Schooners are larger, more imposing vessels than sailboats, and are usually designed for carrying cargo rather than achieving speed and performance.

They typically have two or more masts, and a double hull that allows for a greater carrying capacity than a sailboat.

Schooners are much more difficult to maneuver than sailboats, and require a larger crew due to their size and complexity.

They are also slower than sailboats, but their larger capacity and ability to carry more cargo makes them ideal for long-distance travel.

They have a long history, with the first schooners being built in the late 1600s, and have been used for fishing, trading, and as military vessels.

Today, schooners are still used for transporting cargo, as well as for pleasure cruising and racing.

Maneuverability and Crew Requirements

When it comes to maneuverability and crew requirements, sailboats and schooners differ significantly.

Sailboats are typically designed to be more agile and require fewer people to handle them.

This makes them easier to maneuver in tight spaces and more ideal for recreational sailing and racing.

Schooners, on the other hand, are larger and require more crew members to handle them effectively.

Schooners are more suited to carrying cargo and navigating larger bodies of water, such as the open ocean.

As a result, they are not as agile or as easy to maneuver as sailboats.

In terms of crew requirements, sailboats typically require just two people to operate them, while schooners can require up to five or more people to handle them.

This is due to the size and complexity of the schooners.

Additionally, schooners are much more difficult to maneuver, so they require more crew members to facilitate the process.

In short, the main difference between sailboats and schooners is in terms of maneuverability and crew requirements.

Additionally, sailboats are easier to maneuver and require a smaller crew, while schooners require more crew and are more difficult to maneuver.

Examples of Sailboats and Schooners

schooner is a sailboat stupidhead

When it comes to sailboats and schooners, there are many types and varieties.

Sailboats come in a wide range of sizes, from small dinghies to large racing yachts, and they can be used for a variety of purposes, from recreational sailing to racing.

Common types of sailboats include sloops, catamarans, and monohulls.

Sloops are the most common type of sailboat, with one mast and a single hull.

Catamarans have two hulls and are typically designed for speed and performance, while monohulls are single-hulled vessels that are the most efficient when it comes to sailing.

Schooners are also a popular type of sailing vessel, and they come in a variety of sizes and designs.

Common types of schooners include gaff-rigged schooners, which have two or more masts and a double hull, and topsail schooners, which have two masts and a single hull.

Schooners are typically designed to carry cargo, and they are often used for commercial purposes, such as fishing or trading.

Additionally, schooners require more crew and are more difficult to maneuver than sailboats.

Pros and Cons of Sailboats vs. Schooners

When it comes to sailing, sailboats and schooners are two vessels that have some distinct differences.

While both are great vessels for sailing, each type has its own set of pros and cons.

For sailboats, the biggest advantage is their speed and performance.

They are designed to be lightweight and aerodynamic, allowing them to move quickly and efficiently through the water.

Additionally, sailboats are also much easier to maneuver than schooners.

They require less crew and are more responsive, making them better suited for recreational sailing.

On the other hand, schooners are better suited for carrying cargo.

They are usually larger and have two or more masts, with a double hull to provide additional stability.

This makes them a great option for transporting goods over long distances or in rough waters.

Schooners also typically require a larger crew than sailboats and can be more difficult to maneuver.

When it comes to deciding between a sailboat and a schooner, it really comes down to what you plan to use the vessel for.

If youre looking for speed and performance, a sailboat is the way to go.

If youre looking for a vessel to transport goods, a schooner is the better option.

Ultimately, its important to consider the pros and cons of each before making your decision.

Final Thoughts

Sailboats and schooners are both types of vessels used for sailing, but they have some key differences.

Sailboats are typically designed for speed and performance, while schooners are more suitable for carrying cargo.

Sailboats are easier to maneuver and require a smaller crew, while schooners require more crew and are more difficult to maneuver.

Knowing the differences between these two types of vessels can help you decide which type of boat is best for your needs.

Be sure to weigh the pros and cons of each type of boat before making your decision.

Below deck's gary king reveals if he's still 'jealous' of daisy & colin, 90 day fiancé: liz woods reveals glamorous birthday makeover with new boyfriend jayson.

  • Below Deck Sailing Yacht's Daisy debuted a new haircut, signaling a "hot girl summer" ahead.
  • Fans anticipate season 5 of Below Deck Sailing Yacht and are hoping for premiere details unknown.
  • Relationship drama with Gary impacted Daisy on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, setting the stage for potential changes.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht star Daisy Kelliher debuted a drastic new change to her appearance , and many are wondering if it’s a sign of things to come. Daisy, who has been a part of Below Deck Sailing Yacht for seasons, has had a whirlwind year after the show took Bravo viewers by storm. After a tumultuous time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4 , Daisy’s relationships shifted and her time aboard Parsifal III was uncertain. Choosing to continue working aboard the superyacht with both Gary King, especially after her relationship with Colin Macrae imploded, was a tough decision for Daisy.

"Hot girl summer coming in quick"

Showing off a short new haircut on her Instagram , Daisy posted a video of herself before and after the big chop. “Hot girl summer coming in quick,” Daisy shared, alongside a video of her shocking new ‘do.

The cut comes just before many fans believe the announcement for the premiere of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5, which is hopefully coming soon. Daisy, who works as the Parsifal III’s Chief Stewardess, reporting to Captain Glenn Shephard, will likely be facing even more major changes on the Below Deck spin-off when it returns in the ensuing summer months.

Reality TV is more popular than ever. With so many to choose from, here are some of the best reality TV shows to stream or watch right now.

When Will Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 5 Be Announced?

While it’s not certain when the highly anticipated Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 will be announced, judging by previous seasons, it’s likely the premiere date will be released soon. The past seasons of Below Deck Sailing Yacht have aired far earlier in the year, some as early as February, and some as late as April. Though the premiere dates have varied, the last season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht was finished by mid-June, making the current season somewhat unprecedented. Though Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5’s premiere date hasn’t been announced yet, the season was filmed during summer 2023 .

The upcoming season of Below Deck Sailing Yacht may be difficult for Bravo to figure out how to advertise , as issues with the show’s First Officer, Gary, have been increasingly difficult throughout the last year. After being accused of sexual misconduct by a makeup artist who was working on the series, many Below Deck viewers called for Gary’s removal from the series, as well as from Bravo events. Though he was originally announced as a guest at BravoCon 2023, Gary was removed from the list of attendees after fans spoke up about their displeasure with Gary’s attendance at the event.

Daisy Had A Difficult Time On Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 4

Below Deck Sailing Yacht has typically been a more low-key series, with the drama on the show surrounding charter guests and crew romances rather that more serious issues. During Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, however, there was some major drama surrounding Daisy, Collin, and Gary 's confusing relationship. While the trio had been friends for years after working aboard the same vessels and developing a close-knit relationship, Daisy and Colin took their close friendship to another level . After skirting around the idea of a relationship, the pair chose to dive in headfirst, despite concerns about the way others would react.

Gary King is walking back his jealous comments towards long-standing BDSY crush, Daisy Kelliher, following her emerging connection with Colin Macrae.

Gary, who had always been a sideline supporter of Daisy and Colin separately, seemed to take issue with his two close friends getting into a romantic relationship. Trying to drive a wedge between them, Gary worked his most manipulative magic in order to move Daisy and Colin away from one another. Gary, who hadn't previously felt he had feelings for Daisy in a romantic sense, didn't seem to be able to handle the idea that she was with someone else. He appeared jealous, despite swearing he wasn't jealous at all, and worked against their relationship instead of supporting his friends.

Do Gary King's Actions His Removal From Below Deck?

While Gary was able to manipulate his way between Colin and Daisy, as the pair ended their relationship after Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, the other actions he took while aboard Parsifal III last charter season were even more unacceptable. Throughout his time as First Officer, G ary has shown a lack of respect for women , especially those that he works with aboard Parsifal III. Not only was he disrespectful to Daisy during his time aboard the yacht, but his relationship with the rest of the interior team, including Mads Herrera and Lucy Edmunds, wasn't in the realm of appropriate.

Gary's behavior has been difficult to watch after learning about the sexual misconduct allegations that former Below Deck makeup artist Samantha Suarez lodged against him in 2023. Watching back Gary's actions and realizing that his understanding of consent is somewhat different than the rest of the crew's , it's clear that he was operating under a very different system of beliefs than his colleagues. While it's a positive that Gary didn't cause any trouble to the rest of his crew during their time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, his behavior was too risky for him to return without consequence.

While Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 is hopefully shaping up to be one of the more interesting seasons of the spin-off series, some are wondering if it will ever actually be released. As Daisy debuts her new haircut, some are taking it as a sign that times are changing and the season will be announced, while others are simply enjoying the Chief Stew’s newest look. For many, the arrival of Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 5 will be a welcome excitement, as viewers have been waiting for the next installment of the series for nearly a calendar year.

Below Deck Sailing Yacht is available to stream on Peacock.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

US Sailing settles federal lawsuit against former members, America One Racing

The bristol, r.i.,-based us sailing association filed a complaint in january, accusing american yachtsmen paul cayard, jose spina, william ruh, and america one of harming the team.

U.S. Sailing has settled its federal lawsuit against veteran sailor and executive Paul Cayard and the America One Racing foundation.

BRISTOL, R.I. — US Sailing has settled its federal lawsuit against veteran sailor and executive Paul Cayard and the America One Racing foundation, the sport’s governing body announced on Wednesday.

Specific details of the settlement have not been released to the public, but America One Racing said in a statement that no money changed hands. Both parties agreed to release all claims, and established a mutual non-disparagement agreement.

The US Sailing Association, which is based in Bristol, R.I., filed a complaint in US District Court in January, accusing American yachtsmen Paul Cayard, Jose Spina, William Ruh, and America One of harming the US Sailing team and the association’s governing team.

Cayard, one of the United States’ most successful sailors, resigned as executive director of the US Olympic Sailing Team in February 2023. He told The Associated Press then that he couldn’t work under a restructuring that would have him focus on fundraising while someone else ran the team. When he left, many donors followed him or paused pledges to the national governing body.

Ruh also joined America One Racing as a member of its board of directors, while Spina was hired as its performance director.

America One Racing had been a partner and financial supporter of US Sailing but switched its focus to directly supporting athletes. US Sailing had sought damages from America One Racing and its three principals, including Cayard, in its lawsuit.

Dropping the lawsuit removes a major distraction that had overshadowed the once-dominant American squad that has won just one medal in the last three Olympics.

Medalists Anna Tobias and JJ Fetter criticized US Sailing for suing one of sailing’s biggest financial supporters.

In late February, Fetter, a two-time Olympic medalist, called for the resignations of US Sailing’s CEO, president and any other board member who supported the lawsuit.

Professional sailor and coach Tony Rey resigned from the board in the wake of the lawsuit, saying he was starting a new career opportunity within the sailing industry and that while he supported the litigation, “the controversy that continues to reverberate on the ground will not be helpful to my career.”

Tobias, the last American to win an Olympic sailing gold medal, at the 2008 Beijing Games, emailed US Sailing president Richard Jepsen and board members on April 24 asking them to drop the lawsuit. She called it “a frivolous and embarrassing side show for US Sailing” and “a distraction from the goals.”

“Let’s broker peace and get the USA Olympic program back to a level where my name is in the history books and not the last USA sailing Gold Medal winner,” her email concluded.

Tobias said she was so convinced that the US team was on the right track under Cayard’s leadership and America One’s financial support that she gave up her job as coach for the ILCA 6 squad in the middle of the current quad and tried to make the team. She lost at the trials.

The lawsuit had also accused America One of breaching a contract to fund a project with US Sailing to assist in developing young athletes for Olympic-level competition. US Sailing launched “Project Pipeline” in 2015 with a $5 million gift from the America One Foundation. In their suit, US Sailing claimed that America One was obligated to pay $5 million over a 10-year period in annual installments. In March 2023, America One told the association it would stop making those payments, alleging it lacked “confidence” in US Sailing’s ability to carry out the project’s mission.

In January, America One Foundation chairman Lawrence G. Finch called US Sailing’s claims “meritless,” “unfathomable,” and that his company was being “targeted as a scapegoat” for the association’s “shortfalls in supporting American sailors.” Finch said the company had directed $6 million to US Sailing over the last 15 years.

In an embarrassment on the English Channel in 2012, the United States failed to win an Olympic sailing medal for the first time since the 1936 Berlin Games. San Diego’s Caleb Paine won a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, but the Americans were shut out again three summers ago in Tokyo and have been overtaken by Britain on the sailing medals table.

Thirteen sailors will represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games .
