Loss of sailing cargo ship off Bahamas underscores the perils of the sea

Surviving crew members reported that they were hit by a sudden storm near the bahamas..

Sea weather was fair more than a week after the 90-foot sailing schooner De Gallant departed Santa Marta, Colombia for Europe carrying a cargo of coffee, cocoa and cane sugar. But tragedy loomed on the horizon.

The crew of the De Gallant , part of a French company that ships products by sail to avoid burning fossil fuels, ran into a sudden and violent storm 20 miles north of Great Inagua, near the Bahamas. The vessel began taking on water. The crew of French sailors scrambled into yellow survival suits and into life rafts, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Two female crew members, however, were missing. 

On Thursday, two days after rescuing six of eight crew members in rafts floating amid a field of the sunken ship’s debris, the Coast Guard said it had called off the search for the two women after scouring 3,700 square miles with planes, helicopters and ships.

“It is with heavy hearts we offer our sincere condolences to the families and crew that lost these two mariners,” said Coast Guard Cmdr. Lindsey Seniuk, who coordinated the search and rescue mission. “When we send our rescue crews out, it is with great hope we can bring people home safely, which is why suspending this case is one of the hardest decisions our personnel make. We are grateful we were able to bring home the six survivors and thankful for the assistance of our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.”

The Blue Schooner sail cargo company, which operated the vessel, did not release the names of any of the surviving crew or the missing women.

Since 2017, Blue Schooner has offered “a carbon-free solution to any producer or shipper concerned about their environmental footprint.” according to its website . Except for port maneuvers, the ship did not use fossil fuel, with on-board electricity provided by solar panels.

It’s among several companies , such as Shipped by Sail, that in recent years have adopted wind power, including on older ships, to transport products such as boutique coffees for sellers seeking to avoid the carbon emissions of typical cargo ships. 

The De Gallant, a Vanuatu-flagged schooner, was a “well-proven vessel piloted by licensed professional sailors,” Blue Schooner said in a statement.

But the incident also highlighted the potential dangers that any ship can encounter at sea.

Blue Schooner noted that the weather had been fairly calm before the ship ran into trouble. A tracking map on the company’s website showed the vessel had previously traveled between Cuba and Haiti on its way north.

The Coast Guard said it first received distress notifications early Tuesday morning from personal locator beacons. About two hours later, around 8 a.m., a Coast Guard helicopter crew located two life rafts with the six French nationals and hoisted them to safety, said Petty Officer First Class Diana Sherbs, a Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami.

They were taken to the Coast Guard Air Station in Miami and found in good health before being met by French diplomatic representatives and returned to France.

Blue Schooner officials had been hopeful that warm water temperatures and clear weather would help the missing crew survive and be found. But on Thursday the company said the lack of any signs during the search forced them to consider the “worst outcome.”

“It is an upheaval for the company, the maritime community and that of sailing transport in particular, which are losing sailors and above all exceptional humans,” the company said in a statement.

The exact circumstances of the sinking were still being examined.

“The first information we have indicates an unforeseen meteorological phenomenon, extremely sudden and violent when the ship was underway in mild conditions. This would have led to its capsizing and then its loss at a depth of more than 2,000 meters,” according to Blue Schooner.

Whether the incident will have any impact on sail cargo businesses is unclear.

The De Gallant’s owners called the incident “a reminder of the dangers of navigation and the seafaring profession.”

And now that the New York Vendée Transatlantic Race is just about to start (after a week filled with Times Square selfies, New York Yacht Club parties, sponsor events, last-minute repairs, and plenty of sunny speed runs past the Statue of Liberty), I’m sure even more Americans will be following these special competitors who are hoping to qualify for to compete in the ultimate-non-stop-around-the-world solo-offshore-sailing marathon.

It's simply called the Vendée Globe . It’s only held every four years. It starts in Les Sables d’Olonne, France. And because it’s one of the most extreme endurance events on the planet, you can’t just rock up to the start line with an IMOCA 60 and compete. In fact, every solo-sailor must first sail thousands of recorded miles in sanctioned events and then be selected by the race committee before being allowed to race.

And while there are many IMOCA events skippers can use to gain qualifying miles, the New York Vendée is last qualifying race for the main event in November. But as anyone who follows this special brand of offshore sailing, every one of the long-distance-solo races that are sailed in crazy, hydrofoil-assisted IMOCA 60’s are more than just another race.

These events bring out the best in the people who compete and provide infinite inspiration for those of us following from home. And the truth is, you don’t even really need to know too much about sailing to appreciate what each sailor must overcome just to keep the boat sailing through sometimes life-threatening conditions.

But don’t just take my word for it. Boris Herrmann became one of the most popular offshore sailors during the previous Vendée Globe and other high-profile offshore races. And as an official Cole Brauer fan, I was excited to see Herrmann invited the aspiring Vendee Globe competitor to join his shore team.

I felt a huge appreciation for Cole’s achievements,” said Herrmann last week. “And I know how difficult that was in a Class 40, a boat harder to sail than an IMOCA 60. “It was a personal inspiration to follow her race. And I imagined having her here would give the Vendee Globe a footprint in the U.S. and we hope to see her at the Vendée Globe start in November.”

While it's a positive that Gary didn't cause any trouble to the rest of his crew during their time on Below Deck Sailing Yacht season 4, his behavior was too risky for him to return without consequence.

Premiering on Bravo, the show follows the life of a Yacht crew as they attempt to navigate a busy Charter season in which many customers make use of a 177-foot sailing yacht. Over the first three seasons, the yacht has been to Greece, Croatia, and Spain.

Orcas sink sailing yacht in Strait of Gibraltar

An unknown number of orcas have sunk a sailing yacht after ramming it in Moroccan waters in the Strait of Gibraltar, Spain’s maritime rescue service said on Monday, a new attack in what has become a trend in the past four years.

The vessel Alboran Cognac, which measured 15 metres (49 feet) in length and carried two people, encountered the highly social apex predators, also known as killer whales, at 9 a.m. local time (0700 GMT) on Sunday, the service said.

The passengers reported feeling sudden blows to the hull and rudder before water started seeping into the ship. After alerting the rescue services, a nearby oil tanker took them onboard and transported them to Gibraltar.

The yacht was left adrift and eventually sank.

The incident is the latest example of  recurring orca rammings  around the Gibraltar Strait that separates Europe from Africa and off the Atlantic coast of Portugal and northwestern Spain.

Experts believe them to involve a subpopulation of about 15 individuals given the designation “Gladis.”

According to the research group GTOA, which tracks populations of the Iberian orca sub-species, there have been nearly 700 interactions since orca attacks on ships in the region were first reported in May 2020.

Researchers are unsure about the causes for the behaviour, with leading theories including it being a playful manifestation of the mammals’ curiosity, a social fad or the intentional targeting of what they perceive as competitors for their favourite prey, the local bluefin tuna.

Although known as killer whales, endangered orcas are part of the dolphin family. They can measure up to eight metres and weigh up to six tonnes as adults.

US Sailing settles federal lawsuit against former members, America One Racing

The bristol, r.i.,-based us sailing association filed a complaint in january, accusing american yachtsmen paul cayard, jose spina, william ruh, and america one of harming the team.

BRISTOL, R.I. — US Sailing has settled its federal lawsuit against veteran sailor and executive Paul Cayard and the America One Racing foundation, the sport’s governing body announced on Wednesday.

Specific details of the settlement have not been released to the public, but America One Racing said in a statement that no money changed hands. Both parties agreed to release all claims, and established a mutual non-disparagement agreement.

The US Sailing Association, which is based in Bristol, R.I., filed a complaint in US District Court in January, accusing American yachtsmen Paul Cayard, Jose Spina, William Ruh, and America One of harming the US Sailing team and the association’s governing team.

Cayard, one of the United States’ most successful sailors, resigned as executive director of the US Olympic Sailing Team in February 2023. He told The Associated Press then that he couldn’t work under a restructuring that would have him focus on fundraising while someone else ran the team. When he left, many donors followed him or paused pledges to the national governing body.

Ruh also joined America One Racing as a member of its board of directors, while Spina was hired as its performance director.

America One Racing had been a partner and financial supporter of US Sailing but switched its focus to directly supporting athletes. US Sailing had sought damages from America One Racing and its three principals, including Cayard, in its lawsuit.

Dropping the lawsuit removes a major distraction that had overshadowed the once-dominant American squad that has won just one medal in the last three Olympics.

Medalists Anna Tobias and JJ Fetter criticized US Sailing for suing one of sailing’s biggest financial supporters.

In late February, Fetter, a two-time Olympic medalist, called for the resignations of US Sailing’s CEO, president and any other board member who supported the lawsuit.

Professional sailor and coach Tony Rey resigned from the board in the wake of the lawsuit, saying he was starting a new career opportunity within the sailing industry and that while he supported the litigation, “the controversy that continues to reverberate on the ground will not be helpful to my career.”

Tobias, the last American to win an Olympic sailing gold medal, at the 2008 Beijing Games, emailed US Sailing president Richard Jepsen and board members on April 24 asking them to drop the lawsuit. She called it “a frivolous and embarrassing side show for US Sailing” and “a distraction from the goals.”

“Let’s broker peace and get the USA Olympic program back to a level where my name is in the history books and not the last USA sailing Gold Medal winner,” her email concluded.

Tobias said she was so convinced that the US team was on the right track under Cayard’s leadership and America One’s financial support that she gave up her job as coach for the ILCA 6 squad in the middle of the current quad and tried to make the team. She lost at the trials.

The lawsuit had also accused America One of breaching a contract to fund a project with US Sailing to assist in developing young athletes for Olympic-level competition. US Sailing launched “Project Pipeline” in 2015 with a $5 million gift from the America One Foundation. In their suit, US Sailing claimed that America One was obligated to pay $5 million over a 10-year period in annual installments. In March 2023, America One told the association it would stop making those payments, alleging it lacked “confidence” in US Sailing’s ability to carry out the project’s mission.

In January, America One Foundation chairman Lawrence G. Finch called US Sailing’s claims “meritless,” “unfathomable,” and that his company was being “targeted as a scapegoat” for the association’s “shortfalls in supporting American sailors.” Finch said the company had directed $6 million to US Sailing over the last 15 years.

In an embarrassment on the English Channel in 2012, the United States failed to win an Olympic sailing medal for the first time since the 1936 Berlin Games. San Diego’s Caleb Paine won a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, but the Americans were shut out again three summers ago in Tokyo and have been overtaken by Britain on the sailing medals table.

Thirteen sailors will represent the United States in the 2024 Paris Olympic Games .
