2019 - 2020 Vespa GTS 300 HPE

The GTS gets its second major update in ten years and it's a doozy

The Vespa division of the Piaggio Group expanded its footprint in 2019 with a brand-new powerplant for the GTS scooter line with the GTS 300 HPE. Fans of the brand rejoiced at the news of the most powerful engine to make it onto a Vespone descendant, and for many, this is the engine they've been waiting for. Safety comes standard with a few traction-protection subsystems as part of the stock package, plus it features LED forward lighting to help you see and be seen. Best of all, it remains faithful to the design progression that began right after WWII, so it has that classic look that really seals the deal.

Vespa GTS 300 HPE Design

Nothing says old-school Italian scooter quite like a Vespa , and the new GTS 300 HPE is certainly no exception. The sheet metal presents a familiar face to the world with a redesigned tie that divides the front fairing and doubles as a horn cover. Recessed turn signals ride near the outboard edges for a much cleaner installation than the whisker-style lights, though due to regulations in the U.S., whisker lights are still a thing. The housing for the new headlight flows into a handlebar fairing and serves as the instrument housing as well. No windscreen on the base model, but the GTS 300 HPE Touring model comes equipped with a short flyscreen and rear luggage rack.

The chrome surround pairs with the instrument-panel trim to bring some bling to the top end, and the revised front fender sports a chrome dorsal crest that makes a nice offset to the large passenger grabrail out back. Inside the fairing is a small storage compartment with a USB port so you can charge your mobile devices.

A short tunnel interrupts the step-through somewhat but it comes with a flat top complete with non-skid treatment for that 'tween-feet storage. Under the seat, you'll find room to stash a couple of brain buckets, a bookbag, or a decent amount of goods for your grocery-getting missions.

Out back, a new LED taillight and recessed blinkers finish off the rearward lighting, and the license plate pulls double-duty as a mudguard extension. As for the seat itself, it comes with new padding and a new cover to increase both pilot and pillion comfort .

Vespa GTS 300 HPE Chassis

As ever, the GTS rocks a monocoque build that uses the sheet-steel body panels as stressed units, like an exoskeleton, and that replaces the underframe to provide the structure. The front end is a solid arm with a trailing link and a coil-over shock for the actual suspension . Dual shocks tame the motion of the swing-mount drive unit and support the rear end with the obligatory spring-preload adjustment, but nothing else .

I'm not a fan of the 12-inch rims , but they do fit with the overall look, and the tubeless 120/70 up front and 130/70 out back provide generous contact patches. Said patches get their first layer of safety net in the form of a stock, two-channel ABS unit, as well as traction control . The binders work on symmetrical, 220 mm stainless-steel discs to slow the GTS, and bless the factory for leaving the old drum rear brake where it belongs: on the shelf .

Vespa GTS 300 HPE Drivetrain

The real selling point on the GTS 300 HPE is definitely the beating heart. Its potential is reflected right in the name “ High Performance Engine ,” and it lives up to that moniker with a grand total of 23.8 horsepower on tap at 8,250 rpm. Torque measures in with a claimed 19.17 pound-feet that comes on fully by 5,250 rpm for an output increase of 12 percent and 18 percent from the horsepower and torque , respectively. This turns in an actual top speed around 78 mph though the speedo seems a little on the fast side with a displayed 87 mph at the top end. Naturally, loaded weight, elevation, and ambient air temp play into the equation, but suffice to say you can keep up with legal interstate traffic , and that opens up the potential for use as a commuter .

The 278 cc engine is mounted to the revamped CVT transmission -- that has a tougher drive belt -- as a stressed unit to make up the swing-mount drive. It delivers the twist-and-go operation to make riding a near-effortless endeavor. A dry centrifugal clutch divorces the tranny from engine power at an idle to wrap up the mechanical equipment in the drivetrain, but that's not the whole story. Vespa chucked on its ASR traction control feature to prevent wheel-spin if you give it more juice than the rear contact patch can handle. Even though Vespa has done so for a while now, it's still a rare treat to find traction control here at the bottom of the two-wheel pecking order .

MSRP for the GTS 300 HPE is $7,099. The Yacht Club model with its white and nautical blue colorway rolls for $7,049 and the Touring model top out the lineup at $7,299.

Ya' know, Vespa is a tough act to follow. It's got deep roots and an emotional connection with its throngs of admirers. A Chinese knock-off won't do, so I'm going to keep it in the family and look at Piaggio -- Vespa's parent company -- and its BV 350.

Yeah, the mill is a bit bigger with a total of 330 cc, so the power output is necessarily greater as well , to the tune of 30.2 ponies and 21.4 pounds o' grunt. That's all fine and dandy, but since the Vespa is capable of interstate travel, anything beyond that is just gratuitous , says me.

The BV 350 also comports itself with a decidedly modern look that, while it's not unattractive, lacks anything in the way of the charm that the GTS 300 HPE brings to the table . It does qualify as a maxi-scooter at the bottom of the range. I guess the main reason I pulled this machine is the fact that they both fall at a similar pricing point and the quality of the fit and finish will be at similar standards . The BV 350 rolls for $6,599, which is more bang-per-buck, but again, if you're into that classic look, nothing else but a Vespa will do .

“Maybe the Vespa snobs are right. I admit, I have an affinity for that classic look, and wouldn't bat an eye at spending the extra money to get it. Throw in the traction control and ABS and you've really got something you can safely work with. Not sure I'd ever be comfortable on the superslab with it though.”

My wife and fellow motorcycle writer, Allyn Hinton , says, “In the last ten years, this only the second major update for the GTS. It's a very popular scooter in Europe, which has a larger scooter culture than we have here in the U.S. and with the HPE, it makes a good thing better .”

I tried a ship-within-a-ship cruise experience and it was worth it for the endless perks—here’s why

The MSC Yacht Club affords travelers a totally different cruising experience, but you’ll have to splurge.

I heard tales of luxury from people about the ritzy MSC Yacht Club , the ship-within-a-ship concept where discerning passengers enjoy their own area of the cruise ship that includes a dedicated restaurant, private lounge, separate pool and sundeck as well as private butlers and concierges to take of any whim while cruising. The elevated Yacht Club boasts priority everything while sailing MSC.

I sailed on a four-night cruise on the new MSC Seashore, a glitzy ship with Italian flair intermingled with references to New York City at every turn. Although the ship was well-appointed and had amazing dining, drinking and entertainment venues, and a bountiful Top Sail main buffet, thousands of passengers made the ship feel crowded at times, elevators were slow, and as I strolled through the general pools, they were boisterous and crowded.

Switch gears to MSC Seashore’s Yacht Club, passkey-protected for lucky guests, and is a 180 from the ship’s general spaces. Once you scan your handy Yacht Club wrist badge, or your room key, you’re instantly given entrance to a breathtaking retreat of 131 staterooms and suites. All this luxury does come at a price. Cruise fares will vary based on destination, time of year, and cabin category, but generally speaking you can expect to pay double for the Yacht Club. And from my experience, it’s worth it. You’re fast-tracked through everything

The Yacht Club’s exclusivity and impeccable service standard started from the moment I got dropped off at the Port Canaveral cruise terminal. There were hundreds of people waiting to board at 1pm on embarkation day. I saw in the distance a canopy that said MSC Yacht Club. My husband and I wheeled our carry-on luggage to the representative under the canopy. I gave her my name and within two seconds, she gave me a sticker to wear and up we ascended on the escalator to check in. Just five minutes later, I was directed to the dedicated check-in area for Yacht Club guests. To my right, I saw about 1,000 people serpentine through ropes to do general check-in. I felt a sense of relief; who wants to wait in that line? Five minutes later, a butler from the Yacht Club insisted on wheeling my luggage to board the ship and I was in my room in a total on 12 minutes from the time I stepped foot out of the car to my stateroom in the Yacht Club.

Relaxing and streamlined

In addition, Yacht Club guests have the freedom to get off the ship first for excursions. Your butler will happily escort you off the ship with a smile. Guests also can disembark on the last morning first, which is a big convenience. Your butler walks you right to the place you disembark, bypassing crowds and hassles. Port Canaveral is about an hour away from Orlando International Airport, and we took a 10 am flight home. We didn’t have to linger around until the afternoon for our flight home.

Another perk is that there’s a special seating area in the theater for shows. All the shows were excellent during my voyage. All other ship passengers have to make reservations in advance for shows but that’s not the case for the privileged Yacht Club passengers. As long as you arrive about 10 minutes before any show you choose, a crew member from the Club will allow you entry into a special roped-off section. Again, no rushing through dinner—you have the flexibility to plan your evenings your way.

Your Yacht Club package is packed with remarkable value

The price tag may sound daunting, but there’s lots of value there. All Yacht Club cabins and suites include a premium drink package that covers beverages up to $15. You can use this perk both in the Yacht Club and throughout the ship. In addition, your package includes a two-device Wi-Fi package, which worked well during my sailing. Finally, you get access to the thermal spa suite, which is a place to indulge after a day in port or a sea day. Commonly, there’s a taboo regarding mini-bars, but not in the Yacht Club. It’s stocked each day with the beverages you want; just tell your butler and consider it done.

You get perks ashore too

If your sailing includes a call to Ocean Cay, MSC’s private island, Yacht Club guests get an elevated experience there too. Yacht Club guests enjoy a private area, and a dedicated restaurant called the Ocean House. While other ship guests were hosted to a buffet of predictable fare, I enjoyed a lobster roll, and my husband chose carne asada. In my opinion, one thing that could be improved was the tram service to the Yacht Club’s private area. We were told the last tram back was 3:30pm if we didn’t want to trek a 15-minute walk in the heat. Since we were docked in Ocean Cay for the evening and weren’t sailing, I was a bit dismayed by this logistical quirk. I felt like I was keeping an eye on my phone to make sure I didn’t miss the last tram.

You have private areas with curated food and drink and outdoor spaces

Within the Yacht Club complex, there’s the Yacht Club Restaurant, Top Sail Lounge and the One Pool Buffet, which are all exclusive to Yacht Club guests. Obviously, the food and service are steps above other dining venues of the ship, I can vouch for that. Although the food is delicious, if you don’t want to pay extra to dine at the specialty restaurants or fuss in the main buffet, eating three meals a day in the Yacht Club restaurant can get a bit monotonous. The breakfast is the same daily, and lunch and dinner offer a menu with daily specials plus a few standby selections like a hamburger or pasta each day. Although the Yacht Club Restaurant concept is desirable, I would strongly suggest dining in other venues on board, especially for dinner. I thoroughly enjoyed specialty dining in Ocean Cay Restaurant, Butcher’s Cut, and Kaito Teppanyaki. I also want to mention that late afternoon high tea is offered daily at the Yacht Club Restaurant. It was one of the nicest I have experienced at sea.

Also available exclusively to Yacht Club passengers is the Top Sail Lounge, which offers panoramic water views and has chef-curated selections from morning through late night. We enjoyed popping into the lounge at all hours to try finger foods and sweets. The One Pool Buffet offers a more casual option for breakfast and lunch by the pool. The buffet has grilled fish, sandwiches and lots of delicious options if you want to dine outside.

There’s also an exclusive area with a private pool and two whirlpools for Yacht Club guests only. The sun deck loungers are very comfortable and I never had to worry about finding a lounger, there are ample. One issue I had was that there was almost no shade on the sun deck; there were shaded day beds for Royal Suite and Owners Suite guests, but beyond those, I couldn’t find any shade, which was disappointing.

You can justify the price at the end of your cruise

Overall, the best way to explain my enthusiasm for my MSC Yacht Club experience is this: it’s better to book an interior stateroom in the Yacht Club than a luxe cabin outside the Yacht Club. It’s worth the splurge and you return home feeling truly pampered and it’s money well-spent. And I make this prediction: Once you try a ship-within-a-ship concept like the MSC Yacht Club, you won’t want cruise any other way. Bon Voyage!

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, LLC

Slip Lessee

• Slip Lessee agrees to comply with all rules and regulations set forth herein and on the back of the lease, as such may be amended from time to time by LHPYC, and should breach of the Lease or violation of rules and regulations occur, the lease agreement shall terminate upon ten (10) days’ notice, and LHPYC may remove the boat from her mooring (including directing a contractor to remove the boat and place it in Dry Dock) all at Tenant’s expense. Breaking Lease Contract or in Default = LOSS OF DEPOSIT AND REMAINING BALANCE OF THE TENANT’S LEASE.
• All Boats, Personal Water Crafts (PWC) and Trailers on LHPYC property must have individual contracts and a current year LHPYC stickers. Payments of space rent constitutes acceptance of all the terms, conditions, and rules of the lease.
• LHPYC shall not be liable for the care or protection of the boat PWC or trailer (including gear, equipment, attachments and contents) or for any loss or damage of whatever kind or nature whether due to negligence of LHPYC or otherwise. LESSEE AGREES TO INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS LHPYC AGAINST ANY LOSS, COST, AND SUIT, CLAIM OR DAMAGE CAUSED BY OR ARISING FROM THE NEGLIGENCE OF THE LESSEE.
• LHPYC shall have a lien against the Tenant’s boat, her appurtenances and contents for rent or unpaid sums due for the use of dock facilities or other services, or for damage caused or contributed to by the Tenant’s boat or by Tenant to any docks, property of LHPYC, or any other person or boat.
• INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS: Tenant must insure the boat and personal property at all times in a suitable amount and against all hazards and casualties and makes Lessee’s insurance Company aware of the terms and conditions of the lease. Tenant agrees to provide a certificate of insurance satisfactory to LHPYC showing liability coverage in effect for a minimum amount of $300,000.00 during the lease Space assignments will be made only after proof of insurance is given to LHPYC.
• Dock attendants are permitted to perform only those activities as directed by the Harbormaster.
• It is agreed between parties that the TENANT shall not assign, transfer or permit the use of assigned space to any other party without written consent of LHPYC officer.     

No noxious or offensive activity shall be carried on in any Slip or on the common elements, nor shall anything be done therein, which may be or become an annoyance or nuisance to others. No Owner shall make or permit any disturbing noises or permit anything that will interfere with the rights, comforts and convenience of others … All boaters shall keep the volume of any radio, television, musical instrument or other sounds producing device in the Slip sufficiently reduced at all times so as not to disturb others. Tenants arealso responsible for the conduct and behavior of their guests. Despite such reduced volume, no sound producing devices shall be operated in a Slip between the hours of 11:00 O’clock p.m. and to the following 8:00 O’clock a.m. if such operation shall disturb or annoy others.

• Pets, when off the boat, shall be leashed within the confines of the Marina and toileted in designated areas only.
• Slip Lessee and Tenant are responsible for immediate cleaning of docks, etc. in the event of antoileted accident.
• Pets permitted only if they do not disturb other guests
• Pets are not permitted in restrooms or showers.   
• Use of electrical outlets other than the ones assigned to you on your meter is prohibited unless specifically approved in writing by LHPYC Management.
• Electricity for slips that is individually metered shall be coordinated by LHPYC, with payment for the service the sole responsibility of Slip Lessee.
• Power cords must not be allowed to contact the water, and should be de-energized from the source when the slip is unoccupied.
• THERE SHELL NOT BE ANY ALTERATIONS DONE TO THE ELECTRIC PEDESTALS.
• The Lessee slip shall include the right to use the finger on the side of the slip closest to the parking lot. No part of the Marina shall be used for any purpose except boat dockage and the common purposes for which the Marina was designed. Each Slip shall be used by its owners and their guests. In addition, each Slip shall be used exclusively for mooring boats only that conform to specified Regulations. Boat lifts and floats may be allowed. It is the slip owner’s responsibility to ensure that no damage to the Marina is caused by the presence or action of these additions.
• Storage of private property is not allowed on walkways or finger except in approved dock boxes
• Attachments (including, but not limited to satellite dishes, sun shades, fans, lights or signs) to Marina property [including, but not limited to: dock, roof, roof support and walkway] are prohibited unless specifically approved in writing by LHPYC Management.
• All corner wheels and other slip improvements must be approved in writing and installed/removed according to instructions of LHPYC Management.
• All boats leaving their slips are the privileged boat and have the right-of-way. Conversely, boats returning to their slips are the burdened boats.
• Boats, Dinghies and PWC’s must fit totally within the slip. If you have a contracted PWC, do not use empty slips or unused portions of someone else’s slip for it unless you have permission from that slip Owner and LHPYC.
•  Dock boxes and boarding steps, which have been approved by LHPYC, shall be the only items allowed on the assigned finger. We ask that all dock boxes be screwed down into the finger to ensure they do not blow away in their designated place approved by LHPYC.
•  A boat’s length shall be measured by a plumb line that begins at the farthest protruding point of the boat’s bow or attachments to the boat as it is maintained in the slip and ends at the farthest protruding point of the boat’s stern or attachments to the boat as it is maintained in the slip.
• If an anchor, stanchions, I/O units, swim platforms, lifts or the like protrudes out past the hull, then the plumb line shall be from the farthest protruding point.
• Neither the boat nor its equipment may extend more than two feet beyond the end of the slip. Nothing shall protrude over the main walkway.
• Dinghies, davits, swim platforms, lifts and other items cannot be added to a boat unless the boat as modified continues to be in compliance with these rules.
• There shall be no obstruction of the Marina. Nothing shall be stored on the Marina docks without the prior consent of the LHPYC. No slip shall be modified by any member in any manner without the prior consent of the LHPYC.
• Each Lessee shall keep his Slip and the docks near his Slip in a good state of cleanliness and shall not sweep or throw, or permit to be swept or thrown there from, any trash or other substances off the Dock.
• Slip Lessee will keep all walkways clear. No lines, hoses or other objects are to be left on dock walkways in such a way as to create a hazard.
• Copy of current registration or documentation.
• Proof of insurance naming the Association as an additional insured.

Information above shall be kept current and changes reported to the LHPYC within two days of any change.

Marina General

• The entire harbor is a NO WAKE ZONE.
• Nothing shall be done or kept in the Marina, which will increase the insurance rate for the property or grounds without prior written consent of LHPYC. No Lessee shall permit anything to be done or kept in his slip or on the Common Elements which will result in the cancellation of insurance on the property or grounds, or which could be in violation of any public law, ordinance or Regulation. No petroleum products (gasoline, diesel, lubricating oil) or other explosive or flammable materials may be kept in any slip, vessel or storage area except for petroleum products in certified gasoline and diesel tanks. No waste shall be committed into the waters of the Marina or the docks or other elements.
• Dumping of portable toilet material into the rest room toilets is expressly prohibited. Do not discharge sewage into the harbor or at the docks. If caught there will be a $500 fine for the first offense and $1500 fine for the second offense. We encourage the use of our pump out facility. You can obtain tokens at the office or at the refueling dock at no charge.
• No bathing or swimming from the Docks, Banks or in the Harbor of the Marina is permitted.
• Positively no grilling allowed in the dock slips, Marina and Harbor areas. There will be a Grilling area at the top of each boat ramp entrance A, B, C, D, E and F. No firearms or fireworks shall be displayed or discharged in the harbor.
• Laundry shall not be hung on boats, or docks in the Marina.
• No boat, vessel, watercraft, vehicle, machinery, or equipment of any type whatsoever shall be refueled on Marina grounds or docks. All boaters must be vigilant to prevent discharge of any petroleum products into the water. If any spill occurs, the LHPYC shall be notified immediately. If a spill is major (more than just sheen), the United States Coast Guard and/or Marine Police shall be notified immediately.
• The Day Slips shall be used for short-term mooring only. Boats Slip Lessee at the Marina shall not be docked overnight in the day slips except for emergencies for extenuating circumstances. Transient mooring shall be arranged with the LHPYC. Availability is on a first come, first served basis. Only LHPYC Slip Lessee or long-term renters may reserve Day Slips. The minimum rental period is one day; the maximum period is five (5) days in any two-week period. Additional time may be allowed if there is a vacancy. The rental fee for Day Slips is $25.00 per night and shall be added to the monthly dues of the slip owner in whose name the slip was rented. Boats moored in the Day Slip must meet all requirements for boats moored in Owned slips, including insurance coverage.
• LHPYC reserves the right to limit and govern parking space in the Marina parking lot. BOAT TRAILERS, CAMPERS, AND RECREATIONAL VEHICLES ARE PROHIBITED.
• Long trucks or vans and vehicles with trailer hitches must back into the parking space on the hill side of the driveway so you do not hang over the concrete driveway.
• Fueling of PWC and boats in the marina is strictly prohibited without the approval of LHPYC management.
• Center walkways must be kept clear of all items at all times.
• No signs of any kind shall be displayed on boats or premises without the approval of management. ’Boat for sale’ notices may be displayed on the bulletin board, but do not designate slip location of the boat. We do not want to encourage strangers to walk on our docks.
• To ensure our Wi-Fi is working for all of our customers, we ask that you not use personal routers without checking with us. They can interfere with our system’s signal.
• No slip shall be used for any unlawful, improper, immoral or offensive purpose and no Slip Owner shall commit or permit such acts in or upon his Slip. Slip Lessee are responsible, at all times to ensure the proper conduct of their family members, guests and visitors while on the premises.
• Any damage to the Marina or other common elements or equipment caused by a Slip Lessee shall be repaired at the expense of the Slip Lessee.
• Children shall be permitted within the Marina, provided they are under the care and supervision of a responsible adult 18- years of age or older. Children shall at all times be subject to the provisions of these Regulations.
• No heating devices (except those expressly manufactured and approved for unattended marine use) and no lights (except for permanently installed fixtures) are to be operated on boats without the Owner or his representative aboard unless approved by the LHPYC. Open flames and/or charcoal burners are not permitted anywhere on the docks, including moored vessels. This rule is essential for fire protection of all boats in the harbor.

Trash and Waste

• All trash must be packaged in trash bags and disposed of in the dumpster by the boater.
• Large items being discarded (such as carpet, mattresses, furniture, etc.) must be removed from the premises by the boat owner. Please do not leave trash on your boat or on your slip finger. It attracts wild animals.
• No discarded oil or hazardous materials are to be placed in trash containers. If you have “used oil” to be disposed of, please inform the office. Put the used oil in a leak proof container and set it at the side of the dumpster. LHPYC will properly dispose of the used oil.

Boat Condition

• All boats must be in seaworthy condition and reasonably clean and free of clutter during the term of this agreement. LHPYC Management has the sole discretion to declare a boat un-seaworthy or not being maintained to reasonable standards, and todirect the Slip Owner to correct the deficiencies or remove such boat from the LHPYC within thirty (30) days, failing which, LHPYC may correct the deficiencies or remove the boat (including directing a contractor to remove the boat and place it on land) all at Owner expense.
• Owner’s authorizes LHPYC to pump out boats which appear to be in danger of sinking and agree to pay for any services rendered or supplied. LHPYC does not, however, have any duty or obligation to render aid to a boat or inspect boats to determine if the boat is seaworthy, such responsibility being and remaining that of the Owner.
• No electricity is to be used unless otherwise approved in writing by LPYC Management.
• No work of any kind shall be performed inside the building.
• Batteries must be shut off, disconnected or removed.
• Storage area can be accessed during normal office hours only

Boat Repairs

• All contractors or workers performing work on Owner’s boat must sing in at office and have (and be prepared to show to Marina representatives) proof of liability insurance ($1,000,000 coverage) and certificate of workman’s compensation and perform their work in an area to be assigned LHPYC suitable in which to perform their work.
• The use of torches or open flame, inflammable or toxic removers, or any other hazardous equipment is prohibited.
• No work can be performed by a contractor that is direct competition with services offered by LHPYC.
• No extended or major overhaul of any vessel may be undertaken in any Slip. Routine maintenance is permitted; the tools, cleaning materials, debris and other items associated with such activity shall be kept safely stored and out of view when not in use and all such activity shall be kept safely stored and out of view when not in use, and all such activity shall be carried out expeditiously.

Payments / Non-Payments

• Annual or seasonal rent is due and payable in advance of the first day of the contract.
• Monthly rent is due and payable in advance of the first of each month of the contract.
• If payment is not received within five days after the due date 2% will be added to the balance due each month until the bill is paid in full.
• Any boat left in its slip past the end of the contract will be charged by the day prorated at the monthly rate.
• If a boat is in a slip and the bill is more than 30 days past due, the boat will be secured in the slip or put into dry-dock and winterized at the owner’s expense.
• If you have a small boat or PWC, and you do not have a trailered boat contract for it with LHPYC, your account will be charged $1.00 per foot per day for transient docking if you dock/park it anywhere in the marina other than within your contracted slip.

Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, Inc., may at any time cancel a member’s contract and demand member to remove his/her boat from the marina premises if said member’s actions or those of his family or guests, in the opinion of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, Inc., become objectionable to other members or the owners or staff of Lighthouse Point Yacht Club, Inc., or detrimental to the operation of the marina.

New details, photos, and a video have emerged on the proposed changes to the Cape Coral Yacht Club Community Park, changing it from an Old Florida feel to a 'Key West' vibe.

The city plans to present these updates on the Yacht Club at this week's committee of the whole meeting at 9 a.m. Wednesday in council chambers at 1015 Cultural Park Blvd.

Here's what we know.

Yacht Club changes explained

Cape Coral's  Yacht Club Community Park , which includes a yacht basin, tennis courts, a swimming pool, a ballroom, and a beach, has served as a popular attraction and staple for the city since the 1960s, built and open just a few years after  the city's inception in 1957 by brothers Jack and Leonard Rosen .

In 2018, voters approved a $60 million expansion of the city's parks and amenities through the Parks and Recreation General Obligation (GO) Bond. Part of that was intended for the Yacht Club.

The Cape Coral City Council originally planned to close and begin work on renovations for the park in  2021 .

But then Hurricane Ian struck the city on Sept. 28, 2022, delaying the project with the council eventually opting to revamp the whole area, with the city pointing toward the  high cost of repairs and being over FEMA's 50% rule  as justification for moving forward with new buildings and amenities.

Longtime residents and former city officials opposed the plans - however, they could not sway the council to change its mind on the new plans.

What's featured in the new Yacht Club?

The  current plans  include a new two-story community center to replace the ballroom, removing the tennis courts, rearranging the area to accommodate a four-story parking garage, a new restaurant, and a new 14,500-square-foot resort-style pool.

Current parking at the park; including for boats, vehicles, and boat trailers, amounts to 551 total spaces.

The proposed changes would bring a four-story garage with approximately 685 parking spaces, 15 surface spaces at the main building, 46 boat trailers, and 158 boat slip spaces - totaling 904 parking spaces.

The new two-story community center would have 47,000 square feet and include a new ballroom, concession, history room, exterior balcony, storage and meeting space, and a multi-purpose hall.

Previous discussions estimate the cost of the project to be as much  as $100 million .

Demolition has begun

Cape Coral has already begun the work toward these changes as demolition started this month.

The city will demolish the main buildings and attached amenities of the Yacht Club, including the ballroom building, the Tony Rotino Center, tennis courts, pool, and harbormaster.

Johnson-Laux Construction, a full-service construction management firm that operates out of Winter Garden, has been contracted to demolish and deconstruct the Yacht Club for $987,716.04.

The firm is also tasked with  preserving a portion  of the old ballroom building, which includes interior ceiling beams, stonework, a fountain, and interior doors.

Construction will  not affect the beach area.

What's next? When's the completion?

A public meeting to review and showcase current Yacht Club designs will be held on May 7.

The city is still in the design phase and has no estimated timeframe for completion.
