In Russia, the western concept of building architecturally beautiful golf courses filled with modern and luxurious amenities has found fertile ground. What was considered a frivolous pastime during the time of the Soviets has become the latest trend for the stylish set. These days, there are countless options around Moscow to practice golf, polo, ski, yachting, and other sports alongside 5-star hotels, luxurious country houses, and magnificent villas.

The game of golf is a sport that requires passion and expertise. It is also part of a culture that considers this pastime a synonym of social prestige and exclusivity. In recent years, the new Russian elite has turned to golf as a vehicle of integration in the era of globalization. Golf courses are also meeting and socializing spaces where Muscovite tycoons can relax and also seal business deals.

Golf Courses in Russia

The Moscow Country Club, Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club, Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club, and Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia are some of the most exclusive and elegant golf courses in Russia. Some of them have made it to the list of Top 15 golf clubs in the world, a source of great prestige for the country.

Moscow Country Club Moscow Country Club

The first 18-hole golf course built in Russia, Moscow Country Club, hosts the exclusive PGA European Tour. Located just eight miles from the city center, this luxurious facility was created by architect Robert Trent Jones Jr . The design takes advantage of a typical Russian birch and spruce forest to provide a natural environment of extraordinary beauty.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club

The Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is 18 miles from the heart of Moscow, close to historical monuments from the 17th and 18th centuries. Designed by famed architects Paul and Dave Thomas , this 18-hole course is part of a complex that includes a yacht club, an equestrian center, and a health and wellness facility. Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is Russia’s version of a classic country club with multiple attractions.

Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club Tseleevo Golf & Polo Club

This park is among the best in Eastern Europe and was awarded the 2014 World Golf Award as the best golf course in Russia. Located 25 miles from Moscow, it is part of a vast complex featuring an 18-hole golf course, designed by Jack Nicklaus , a polo club and a mountain ski club with four tracks. The design combines classic Scottish, Alpine, and English features in a dreamy landscape.

Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia Zavidovo Golf Club, PGA National Russia

Less than 60 miles from Moscow, this golf course with a definite Scottish design is the only one in Russia recognized as a PGA (Professional Golfers’ Association) from Britain and Ireland. Located in an ecologically pristine area on the banks of the Volga River, the Zavidovo Golf Club embodies the spirit and appearance of the legendary Scottish golf courses. Its many springs and streams, hills, forests, swamps and lakes justify its reputation as a very demanding circuit. Last year, it entered the exclusive club of the 15 best golf courses in the world.   ■

About 30 miles outside of central Moscow is a 741-acre luxury gated community where Russian billionaires live in houses that cost between $6 million and $50 million. 

The Agalarov Estate was built by Russian- Azerbaijani billionaire real-estate developer Aras Agalarov, who's been called the " Trump of Russia " for his tendency to put his own name on his developments.

The community includes an 18-hole golf course and golf club, a school, three restaurants, a beach club, a luxury hotel, and a 5,000-square-foot fitness center, a spa, and more. 

On a recent trip to Russia, I got an exclusive tour of the Agalarov Estate with Moscow Sotheby's International Realty. It was a pristine, high-security estate, so private that I was forbidden to photograph the homes themselves. 

Here's what the prestigious community looks like. 

Agalarov Estate is a private gated community for billionaires on the outskirts of Moscow, Russia.

It was built by Aras Agalarov, a billionaire real-estate developer who's been called the " Trump of Russia " for his tendency to self-brand his buildings.

Agalarov 's company, Crocus Group, has developed more than 43 million square feet of property throughout Russia, including restaurants, residential complexes, a concert hall, a bank, an exhibition center, and a luxury shopping center, according to its website.

Agalarov Estate is about an hour's drive from the center of Moscow, depending on traffic.

The development was completed about 10 years ago.

On a recent trip to Russia, I got an exclusive tour of the community with local luxury real-estate experts Leonid Nikitskiy, head of country real estate at Moscow Sotheby's International Real Estate, and Alexey Korotkikh of Villagio Estate.

My tour guides told me that businessmen, politicians, and even some celebrities live in the exclusive Agalarov community. The majority of them are from Russia. 

We passed through a security gatehouse to get into the estate.

I was told that I was not allowed to photograph any private homes, only the shared spaces.

The cheapest home at Agalarov Estate costs $6 million, with prices reaching up to $50 million.

There are some houses today that could ask $100 million, my guides told me, but people living in the community rarely sell.

And when they do, their homes are usually not publicly listed, but shopped around via word of mouth as "whisper listings."

The wealthy suburb is pristinely landscaped. The grass of the golf course is perfectly manicured and watered, and various types of trees were planted throughout the property.

I was told that 15 years ago, this area was nothing but a field. 

The estate has its own private beach club for residents, which includes an Italian restaurant serving European and Azerbaijani cuisine.

Outside is a resort-style pool with lounge chairs and umbrellas, which overlooks a picturesque lake.

I didn't see many other vehicles driving around during my time at the estate, but those I did see were spotless, shiny luxury cars.

Some of Agalarov Estate's residents travel back and forth from Moscow via helicopter, my guides said.

Agalarov Estate has its own private hotel that can be booked only by residents.

While I wasn't able to photograph the homes at Agalarov Estate, my tour guide told me the hotel is a good example of the houses' style.

Indeed, many of the stately-looking homes I saw were made of brick and featured elegant design details like columns.

Back in 2008, Agalarov told The Telegraph that the houses in the community would all have different designs.

"Styles differ," he said. "They will all be replicas of famous architectural styles. I believe it's going to be the best quality housing project in Russia."

I stepped into the hotel to have a look around.

The lobby of the hotel, outfitted in marble, featured a grand staircase and a massive bouquet of peonies and other fresh flowers set on a table in the middle of the entryway.

A lavishly decorated seating area connects to a lobby bar.

The hotel includes a luxury spa complex with an indoor pool, a hot tub, and a hammam.

Nine spa rooms offer facial and body treatments , various types of massages, and Thai herbal steam and aromatic baths.

Here and there throughout the hotel, I spotted an ornate golden "A" logo.

In addition to the beach club, Agalarov Estate residents also have access to a luxury gym, Crocus Fitness.

The 5,000-square-foot fitness center has three indoor tennis courts and three outdoor courts.

The exercise venue also offers a boxing ring, weight machines, treadmills, and other cardiovascular machines.

The fitness center was empty when I walked through.

Residents also have access, of course, to the golf club.

Membership at the club costs 950,000 rubles per year, or just under $15,000, and members can invite up to three guests.

Agalarov's 18-hole golf course was designed by American architect Cal Olson.

The golf course opened in 2010, according to the American Society of Golf Course Architects .

Inside the club, a statue of a golfer in mid-swing greets residents just past the reception desk.

The club's main lounge area features high ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, and marble floors.

There's also a golf shop that sells clothes and gear.

The golf club holds one of the estate's three restaurants.

Parties and other events are often held at the restaurant following golf tournaments.

Next to the golf club is the community's private English school, the Kingsley School.

The teachers are native English speakers and classes are often held outside, according to the website.

As we drove through the gated community, I was increasingly disappointed that I wasn't able to take photos of the lavish homes, which I was told range in size from about 19,300 square feet to nearly 27,000 square feet.

The community is made up of about 260 homes that sit on more than 741 acres.

I couldn't even photograph homes that were unsold and still under construction, of which I saw a few. But I shouldn't have been surprised.

Throughout my time in Russia reporting on luxury real estate, I was repeatedly told that ultra-wealthy Russians (and there are many — Moscow is home to 70 billionaires ) value security and privacy above all else. 

And those two factors, of course — along with ritzy amenities like a private beach club and golf course — are exactly what make the Agalarov Estate so appealing to Russia's upper crust.

Brussels talks about free speech but doesn?t uphold it, the chairman of Russia's lower house of parliament has said

Russia's State Duma chairman has accused the EU of censoring alternative opinions and curtailing freedom of speech, with the goal of deceiving citizens.

Vyacheslav Volodin was commenting on Brussels' latest ban on Russian media outlets, which has sparked a warning of countermeasures from the Foreign Ministry in Moscow.

On Friday, the European Council announced it was suspending the broadcasting activities of four additional media organizations, claiming that they "spread and support" Russian propaganda.

The blacklist includes RIA Novosti news agency, newspapers Izvestia and Rossiyskaya Gazeta, and the Czech-based portal Voice of Europe.

Writing on Telegram on Saturday, Volodin described the move as showing the EU's desire "to close access to objective and reliable information" for residents of member states.

According to the lawmaker, "the policy of double standards has become an integral part of European structures" as they only "talk about freedom of speech, but do not tolerate it in reality".

Officials in Brussels have no arguments to convince EU citizens that they are right and as soon as they see any problems, they just block "any alternative point of view, destroy freedom of speech, and violate the right to freely disseminate and receive information," Volodin stressed.

"In fact, they introduce censorship with the only purpose - to deceive their citizens and stay in power," he argued.

The Russian Foreign Ministry, commenting on Brussels' move, noted that Moscow has repeatedly warned the EU that "repressive measures" against Russian media will not go unanswered.

"Ignoring these warnings forces us to take countermeasures, which will follow inevitably," the ministry's spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova said on Friday.

According to the diplomat, Brussel's decision is proof "of the neglect by the EU and its member states for their international obligations in the field of ensuring media pluralism and another example of the degeneration of democratic societies" in the West.

Since the Ukraine conflict escalated into open hostilities in February 2022, the EU has barred several Russia-associated media outlets from engaging with audiences in member states. Even hosting content made by the targeted organizations is illegal in the bloc.

Moscow has also taken a harsh stance on Western media. Citing anti-Russian sentiment, misinformation and censorship, the national media regulator has barred access to Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and the websites of the BBC, Deutsche Welle, along with other media outlets.

Pestovo Golf & Yacht Club is located 20 miles north of Moscow in an historic area of Russia. Yachting takes place on the nearby Pestovskoye reservoir, which is one of the largest man-made lakes along the Moscow Canal system. Golf, on the other hand, is played on part of Prince Serebryany’s 16th century patrimonial estate. The impressive manor houses of Nikolskoye-Prozorovskoye and Marfino are located close by.

The English father and son team of Dave and Paul Thomas designed Pestovo as a Russian championship course that will compete with Moscow Country Club  in terms of quality and challenge. The architects achieved their objectives, as Pestovo hosted the Russian Seniors Open in July 2008, which Welshman Ian Woosnam won.

The course at Pestovo Golf  can be stretched out beyond 7,000 yards from the tips but numerous tees will make the course playable for all levels of golfer. The course is routed in a snake-like figure of eight and the holes and topography vary between forest and open country. This final hole over the lake in front of the clubhouse makes the eighteenth a memorable hole on this golf course. Only a short iron is needed for a second shot, but the lake will catch any mis-hits or pushed approaches.

The Pestovo project is unique in Russia featuring not only sailing and golf but also a lifestyle spa and equestrian centre which will provide the perfect recreational facilities for those that choose to live in the homes and apartments which will be developed around the course.

The Dave and Paul Thomas company also fashioned the course at Pine Creek Golf Club at Yekaterinburg in Russia or Playa Serena Golf Club in Spain.

Mistä nimi on peräisin?

  Nimi Benissa juontaa juurensa arabian kielen sanoista ”Ben Isa”, joka tarkoittaa ”Isan poika”. Monet Costa Blancan kylät ja kaupungit, joiden nimen alussa on ”Beni”, ovat todisteena maurilaisen kulttuurin vaikutuksesta alueella.

  Benissa on pieni paikka, mutta sillä on monia etuja. La Marina Alta on suuri valkoinen katedraali, joka rakennettiin 1900-luvun alussa rikkaiden vapaamuurarien toimeksiannosta. Koska se sijaitsee keskellä keskustaa, se on Benissan symboli.
