Captain Kerry Titheradge and his crew head to the chilly fjords of Norway in Below Deck Adventure Season 1 . They will be sailing along the picturesque landscapes and through dangerously narrow passageways in a super yacht by the name of Mercury . Built in 2001 by Amels shipyard in Holland, the 164-foot motor yacht will travel to locations like the Valdall Caves and the seaside town of Andalsnes — all while navigating the icy and unpredictable waters of Norway.

Just as in past seasons, you can rent the Below Deck Adventure yacht . But it’s available for the tune of approximately $168,000 a week before expenses, and in high season can go up to around $183,000 a week. The yacht can fit up to 12 guests and 12 crew members, and it features five cabins: a master suite, two double cabins, and two twin cabins. Other amenities include a gym, a deck jacuzzi, two waterskis, kayaks, and fishing equipment.

Titheradge explained to TV Insider that Amels makes really sturdy yachts — but they do come with some downsides. “Amels yachts are built to go anywhere in the world. They are built in the arctic Overbuilt so the advantage of that is it’s strong. The disadvantage is it’s heavy and slow,” he said. “My engines are not as powerful as in a boat [ Below Deck Mediterranean captain] Sandy Yawn is running, which is a lighter boat with big engines that are more forgiving and use engine horsepower to get herself out of trouble. With my boat, you have to plan for things far ahead. It’s not going to stop straight away. You have to stop far ahead before you do something.”

Titheradge himself has nearly 30 years of sailing experience, so he’s more than ready to sail the Nordic seas. Joining him are chef Jess Condy , described by Bravo as a perfectionist who clashes with the other crew members when it’s clear there’s a lack of provisions in Alesund, Norway. There’s also chief stew Faye Clarke, who’s traveled the world for more than a decade but is tasked with the challenge of getting the whole team working together. Kasie Faddah is a stew from Seattle who left the Mormon church for the open seas, but she struggles to get along with everyone in her department. The other stew, Oriana Schneps, has a tense relationship with Faddah, who she worked with previously. Meanwhile, bosun Lewis Lupton has a brewing romance with Schneps, while deckhands Nathan Morely, Michael Gilman, and Kyle Dickard grow close and then clash when situations get heated and guest expectations aren’t met.

“Pretty much every staff member except for one was challenging. Everyone is coming from different places, backgrounds, and ages. They all have their own intentions, and we all have to find our own footing,” said Titheradge . “Understand a brand new boat in a totally new country. That puts pressure on everybody. For me, it’s understanding that everyone is human. Everyone gets a pass, but if you start taking my kindness for weakness, that’s when I change gears.”

The star yacht of Below Deck Down Under season two, the 50.8-metre Northern Sun (originally delivered as Hokko Maru ) has lived a full and fascinating life. She was the largest yacht built by Narasaki Shipbuilding at the time and worked as an ice-class research vessel, analysing marine life and ocean currents in the North Japan Sea. As a result, she has the hardy constitution of an explorer, transformed from ship to superyacht under the stewardship of her new owners.

Northern Sun’s main deck is now dedicated entirely to entertainment, from the al fresco dining area to the main saloon with its piano and games table. Other leisure highlights include gym equipment, a dedicated library on the lower deck and an outdoor Jacuzzi, surrounded by sun pads and lounge beds. The owners’ addition of a forward seating area during her refit allows for versatile recreation, whether the mood calls for cocktail parties or quiet, waterside contemplation. 

Accommodation is for up to 12 guests across six cabins, with rich, warm interiors that feature natural materials such as narra and makore wood (commonly known as cherry mahogany). The ex-explorer also – naturally – has impressive stowing capacity. She's able to carry two Laser sailboats, scuba-diving equipment, a waterski and a two-deck-high inflatable water slide, with the broker describing her as a "family-orientated" vessel.

60 metre Benetti motor yacht St David is the star of the tenth season of Below Deck, returning to the Caribbean with beloved Captain Lee. A finalist at the 2009 World Superyacht Awards , St David is a full-custom yacht with both interior and exterior design by British studio Winch Design .

She has made appearances at a number of high-profile events such as the Cannes Film Festival and has been spotted at various locations around the world including the Seychelles, Red Sea and Abu Dhabi. Accommodation is for 12 guests in six cabins, with a split-level master suite that lets in plenty of light.

A palatial theme characterises St David ’s social spaces, with features including a generous skylounge and a spiral staircase that leads through all three decks and is lit by a skylight in the spa pool of the sun deck. Elsewhere, St David has expansive water toy facilities and storage, including scuba dive gear, a new 7.2m tender, new Waverunners, and an electric foiling surfboard.

Charter cost: St David is managed by Morley Yachts with a weekly charter rate starting from €325,000.

The star of Below Deck Mediterranean season seven, 49.8 metre Home is the first “green” superyacht to appear on the show. Featuring a ground-breaking combination of a super-efficient Fast Displacement Hull Form by Van Oossanen Naval Architects with power provided by a hybrid propulsion system, Home boasts reduced emissions and fuel costs for the eco-conscious charter guest.

Defined by a distinctive vertical bow and large expanses of glass, Home was penned by Omega Architects and launched by Heesen in 2017. Her interiors, designed by Cristiano Gatto in a modern “Ibiza style”, can accommodate up to 12 guests in six cabins including a full-beam master cabin with a dedicated dressing room and a private office. There is also room for nine members of Below Deck crew on board, including Captain Sandy who has returned to the helm for the seventh season while Home is cruising the coasts of Malta .

The main socialising spot is up on the sundeck, complete with a Jacuzzi and sit-up bar, a shaded lounge and protection from the elements provided by glass screens. Closer to the water, a beach club with an air-conditioned gym is situated next to the swimming platform from which guests can launch the water toys including SeaBobs, Hoverboards, E-foils, Jet Skis and a Flyboard. Home also carries gear for scuba diving, waterskiing and wakesurfing for guests to make the most of their time on board.

Sailing under her own name around the South Pacific islands of French Polynesia on Below Deck’s sixth series, the 56.4 metre My Seanna (now Starship ) was built by Delta Marine in 2000 and refitted in 2014. The Glade-Johnson designed superyacht reappeared again for season eight, where she was filmed cruising in Antigua. She is now starring in the latest season of the show, season nine, following her recent sale .

Key features include an open air Jacuzzi surrounded by an al fresco drinks bar, a gym, a sauna room, a helipad and a spacious beach club complete with a lounge, flatscreen TV and a small galley for preparing snacks or drinks. Her opulent interiors can accommodate up to 12 guests and 11 crew and even offer a home cinema and piano for entertaining in the main saloon. There are multiple toys carried on board as well, including gear for diving and spearfishing, Seabobs and equipment for underwater filming.

“The thing that I really love about My Seanna is the spacious cabins” says Worth Avenue retail charter broker, Shannon McCoy, who has appeared on episodes of Below Deck . She describes My Seanna as a “well-appointed yacht with a good collection of toys for the guests to enjoy,” offering an excellent layout with a variety of spaces that allows charterers “to have breakfast in a different place every morning or enjoy dinner whether it's outside under the sun or in the formal dining area.”

Lady Michelle

Sailing under her real name, Lady Michelle was the star of the sixth series of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was the latest series from the Med spin off. The 54.8 metre Benetti superyacht is the second biggest yacht ever to feature on the show, following just behind the 56.2 metre motor yacht The Wellington from season five. During season six Lady Michelle hosted charter guests in Ibenik, Croatia with Captain Sandy behind the helm.

First delivered in 2003, Lady Michelle features accommodation for up to 14 guests including a split-level master suite with its own panoramic observation lounge. Her Stefano Natucci interiors offer indoor and al fresco dining spaces, an expansive sundeck with a hot tub and dedicated gym. There’s also a range of toys at the guests’ disposal, from Jet Skis and Seabobs to fishing gear and a waterslide.

Charter cost: Lady Michelle is managed by Burgess with a weekly charter rate starting from $325,000.

The Wellington

Actually named The Wellesley , this 56.2 metre Oceanco superyacht is owned by property magnate and hotelier Khalid Affara and named after his luxury art deco hotel in London. Delivered in 1993, The Wellesley features extended deck spaces and Donald Starkey -penned interiors that replicate the grandeur of the eponymous Knightsbridge hotel. Highlights on board include a waterfall jacuzzi, an outdoor cinema for movies under the stars and a unique private club-style lounge complete with a Winston Churchill inspired cigar room. 

Describing why she makes an excellent charter yacht, James Graham-Cloete, director of charter management from TWW Yachts , says that The Wellesley is “ideal for entertaining family and friends, or hosting corporate events in utter privacy,” thanks to the fact that she “boasts some of the largest open deck spaces of any 56 metre on the water.” Graham-Cloete also adds that, on The Wellesley , “guests are invited to experience the same exceptional personal service, fine dining and attention to detail that has become synonymous with the hotel, on board a private superyacht,” while being looking after by her 14 crew members. “The crew have one of the lowest turnover rates in the industry and one of the best charter records, along with a full-time masseuse on board- making her the ultimate charter yacht!” says Graham-Cloete.

The 47 metre Heesen -built superyacht Sirocco took centre stage in both the second and fourth series of Below Deck Mediterranean and introduced captain Sandy Yawn, who has become a returning cast member on the show. Launched in 2006 with a refit in 2013, Sirocco features a dark blue hull and was designed inside and out by Omega Architects . She accommodates up to 12 guests and nine crew and offers charterers an eight person Jacuzzi, a gym, plenty of al fresco entertainment areas and a well-stocked toy box comprising Jet Skis, a waterslide and gear for wakeboarding or waterskiing. Worth Avenue retail charter broker Shannon McCoy describes Sirocco as a “very, very popular charter yacht” and with her fleet of water toys and pedigree Heesen design, provides “an excellent platform for a great time at sea.”

Ionian Princess

Appropriately named for the first season of Below Deck Mediterranean , which was set in Greece, the 45.7 metre Christensen -built yacht was captained by Mark Howard during filming. Launched in 2005 and last refitted in 2016, Ionian Princess features a luxurious Greek-style inspired interior finished with high-gloss sapelle mahogany joinery and custom in-laid stonework throughout. Ionian Princess can host up to 12 guests in six cabins, including two master cabins, and also boasts plentiful dining options and a sundeck equipped with a hot tub and sunpads. She also comes with a fleet of water toys from waterskiing and wakeboarding kit to Jet Skis and kayaks. Thanks to her shallow draft, she can also access hard-to-reach hidden gems in the Mediterranean Sea that other larger yachts aren’t able to. “ Ionian Princess is ideally suited for cruising the Mediterranean, which is the most sought-after region for summer yacht charters,” says her management team at charter brokers Northrop & Johnson.

Appearing on the second season of the show in 2014 under her own name, Ohana has since been sold and renamed Star Diamond The yacht was originally launched as Roxana by Admiral Marine in 1998 and last refitted in 2018. Designed by Donald Starkey , her interiors have a classic feel with glossy wood finishes and a colour palette blending nautical colours like creamy whites and marine blues. Key features on board this 46.94 metre yacht include accommodation for 10 guests and 10 crew, a six person Jacuzzi on the sun deck alongside a barbecue grill and plenty of spaces for al alfresco dining and drinking.

For a fun entrance into the water, Star Diamond also has an inflatable slide which guests can slip down on from the top deck plus there are a number of other water toys stored on board from Jet Skis to to fishing gear. During the summer, Star Diamond can be found cruising the coasts of New England while in winter she chases the sunshine by heading south to Florida and The Bahamas.

This 50 metre Benetti superyacht kicked off the yachting TV show in style in July 2013. Captained by Lee Rosbach , she was based in the Caribbean isles during the filming of the first season. On Below Deck she was called Honor but in reality, her name is actually Barents . Delivered in 1999 to a design by Stefano Natucci , Barents just underwent an extensive full refit earlier in 2021 and can host up to 12 guests on board in six staterooms. Features viewers may have seen on the show include the stunning sun deck equipped with a hot tub, drinks bar and outdoor cinema, the additional indoor cinema, the beach club and the gym, as well as the extensive fleet of water toys such as Jet Skis and gear for wakeboarding, waterskiing, fishing and snorkelling.

How much does it cost to charter a yacht?

There are many things to consider and first time charterers can be left confused, that's why we've created a comprehensive guide to yacht charter prices (with a checklist).

The good news: It’s easy to grasp the basics of yacht charter pricing. And with one of our experts in your corner, we can help you more accurately estimate the cost of your next once-in-a-lifetime vacation.

The cost of a yacht charter is dependent on a number of factors, including the type of yacht, the charter destination, local taxes, and the base cost. (If the yacht has a celebrity owner, well that too, can add to the cost.)

Therefore, yacht charters have a wide range of base prices. That’s why charters can cost from $10,000 per week on smaller sailing yachts and catamarans, up to $150,000+ per week on the most luxurious motor superyachts.

Yacht Charter Price Structure: “All-Inclusive” vs “Plus Expenses”

In the world of yachting, two types of crewed yacht charters are available to you – “All-Inclusive” and “Plus Expenses” charter experiences. What do these terms mean exactly? Here’s a quick look:

• All-Inclusive Yacht Charters – Some charters (mainly catamaran and monohull charters in the Virgin Islands) offer all-inclusive rates. That means rates are based on the number of guests, and they include all food and drink, water sports, and fuel costs. Dockage and taxes, though, are usually charged separately.
• Plus Expenses Charters – Rates for larger motor yachts do not include running expenses, which must be paid separately. For these luxury charters, the base price is for the yacht only. Additional expenses, i.e. food, bar, fuel, dockage, port taxes, and other expenses, are charged separately. Most frequently, the running expenses are paid by an Advance Provisioning Allowance, or APA, which is typically 35% of the base price; this is an amount that’s paid prior to the charter.

What can you expect to pay for a catamaran, a sailing vessel, or motored yacht? Here’s a quick overview of the average cost to rent a yacht (not including extra expenses) for the most common types available:

Factors that Affect Yacht Charter Prices

Since charter yachts are privately owned, prices are set by the owner. This can explain, in part, the wide range of differences in price between boats of similar lengths. Yet, several other factors can significantly impact price, including:

• The Yacht – The year the boat was built, the builder, previous owners, and the boat’s selection of water toys can also increase the cost of a yacht. Boats can also develop a reputation, i.e. the largest or most luxurious, or having a famous builder or previous owner. Reputation can also affect pricing.
• Season – Prices typically increase in the high season – i.e. high summer in the Mediterranean or winter in the Caribbean – and decrease in low seasons.
• Destination – Your charter destination also plays a role in charter cost. For example, prices increase in areas without large charter fleets (i.e. the Galapagos), whereas Bahamas yacht charters,   BVI charters , or Mediterranean yacht charter are priced more competitively.

Additional Costs Considerations on Yacht Charter

In addition to the cost associated with running the yacht and provisioning, there are a number of other costs that must be considered. These are the most significant:

Advanced Provisioning Allowance

The APA on Plus Expenses charters equals roughly 35% of the yacht’s base price. This is a fee that’s collected prior to charter, and it’s similar to an expense account the captain can access during the charter. At the end of the charter, you will receive a detailed accounting of your APA account, plus any unused APA funds in cash.

In the case of overages, you may be required to replenish the APA account during the charter. This can be done with cash, although many choose to set up accounts with their charter brokers , which can be accessed if requested by the captain.

Taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)

Most boats – whether all-inclusive or Plus Expenses – will not include local taxes or a Value Added Tax into their charter rate. The charterer will be responsible for paying those taxes. Taxes range significantly by destination; here’s a look at some of yachting’s most popular destinations:

• The Bahamas – Tax: 4% plus 10% VAT
• BVI – Tax: between $6 and $16 per person per day, depending on the flag of the boat
• Croatia – VAT: 13%
• Florida – Tax: 6% for Broward County, 7% for Miami-Dade County
• France – VAT: 20%, however, 10% can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Greece – VAT: 12%
• Italy – VAT: 22%, however 6.6% (over 24m) and 8.8% (under 24m) can be applied when an itinerary includes International Waters
• Montenegro – NO VAT
• New England – NO TAX
• Spain – VAT: 21%
• Turkey – NO VAT

Charterers can purchase cancellation and curtailment insurance – which is similar to traveler’s insurance. This insurance can help cover costs if a charterer must cancel or shorten the charter. Charter brokers can help you weigh insurance options, and often offer several different options.

Crew Gratuity

While crew gratuity is certainly not mandatory, it is recommended, particularly if you were truly impressed with your charter experience. In general, crew gratuity is roughly 15-20% of the base charter rate, which is handed to the captain at the conclusion of your charter.

Delivery Fees

While these fees do not apply on most charters, you may be asked to pay delivery costs if you are not chartering in the yacht’s normal cruising ground. In most cases, you will only be required to cover the fuel for the trip.

The price of a yacht fluctuates depending on the season. A Mediterranean yacht charter cost rises in the summer and drops in the winter, whereas Caribbean boat charter prices are high during the winter and lower in the summer months.

How does my destination affect charter yacht cost?

The more remote an area is, the more expensive it will be to charter a yacht there. That’s because prices go up in areas that have fewer boats. If you were to travel somewhere like the Galapagos, which isn’t a typical yacht destination, you’d pay more than you would if you were traveling to the Caribbean.

How much do I tip the crew when reviewing my yacht charter expenses?

It’s not required that you tip your crew, but it is recommended and appreciated. If you had an enjoyable experience it’s considered polite to tip your crew anywhere from 15-20% at the end of your charter.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

WNBA will finally charter to all games. You should be mad it took this long

Twenty-eight years after it should have happened, the WNBA announced Tuesday that it would charter to all regular season games starting as soon as next week, giving the best women’s basketball players in the world something they earned long ago but is often not acknowledged by their superiors: Respect. 

The news gives that old saying “better late than never” new meaning — most of the time when someone says that, they don’t think “late” is going to be in reference to nearly three decades. 

This is a “historic” move for the WNBA according to league commissioner Cathy Engelbert, a huge step for a league that often acts like a start-up instead of a major player in the sports landscape. And while overdue, it’s a major win. 

Players are downright giddy knowing they’ll be able to recover quicker after road games, and do so while prioritizing their privacy and safety. As WNBA agent Lindsay Kagawa Colas, who represents numerous top players, told USA TODAY Sports, this is “a great example of when doing the right thing for player health and safety is good for business.”

Bottom line: This is good news.  But it’s also worth pointing out that the optics of this decision and its timing are terrible. And optics matter.

From the outside, it certainly looks as if the league suddenly decided to start chartering full time due to the arrival of a popular white player (Caitlin Clark), when last season the safety of a Black player (Brittney Griner) wasn’t enough to create permanent change. 

On Tuesday, Engelbert insisted it's more nuanced than that. She told media the popularity of the 2024 draft class is not what drove this decision; she’s been working on getting charters since she took over as commissioner in July 2019. She estimates that it will cost the league $25 million to charter full time. “You need that long-term revenue model,” she said, “and we haven’t had it.” 

Women’s basketball is experiencing an unprecedented surge in popularity right now, led in large part by the frenzy surrounding Clark. With Clark’s entry into the league last month, chartering in the WNBA had once again become a major talking point. WNBA players have fought for years for charter flights — commonplace in nearly every other professional league — and been told they didn’t have the money, it wasn’t a priority, it wasn’t a necessity. 

These were excuses in my mind. The WNBA, for better or worse, is financially backed by the NBA, a $10 billion-dollar entity that could have paid for charter flights from Day 1 if it wanted. NBA commissioner Adam Silver has always had the power and opportunity to get involved. For years, it seems to me he chose not to. 

To say it wasn’t a priority was also a low blow, as players were forced to pick between respectable salaries and charter flights during the last collective bargaining negotiations. As for it not being a necessity, Griner would surely beg to differ. 

For years, I’ve had conversations with players, agents and powerbrokers about the optics of women’s basketball at both the professional and college level. People have been especially critical of the WNBA, which players it chooses to promote vs. not, how it markets the league, etc. And while privately they’ll let their feelings be known, Black women, who have been the foundation of this league since its inception in 1997, have been especially reluctant to vocalize these criticisms, leery of rocking the boat. 

When they do speak out, they’re blunt. Two years ago, two-time MVP A’ja Wilson told ESPN.com, "Even though our league is predominantly Black, I think it's hard for our league to push us, in a sense, because they still have to market, in their mind, what is marketable. Sometimes a Black woman doesn't check off those boxes."

In her new book, which was released Tuesday and details her terrifying 10-month detainment in Russia, Griner talks about returning to the states to both fanfare and vitriol. Threats became commonplace for the nine-time All-Star and two-time Olympian, as she walked through airports with her teammates on their way to and from games.

Despite major concerns about Griner’s safety, no charters were provided for the Mercury or Griner individually at the beginning of the 2023 season. (Previously, the league fined the New York Liberty for chartering, saying it was a competitive advantage banned by the CBA.) 

Last June, Griner was accosted in DFW by a right-wing YouTube personality despite Griner’s security guard trying to steer him away. Police were called, the clip went viral and fans shared their outrage on social media. While Griner was allowed to fly private at her discretion the rest of the season — separating her from her teammates, which no one liked — it never should have taken that incident to spur action. 

Again, players are thrilled they’ve finally got this benefit. They were also surprised by the news. 

“As a player that's been in this league for a while, we've been fighting for this first for a long time,” Breanna Stewart of the Liberty, a two-time MVP, said Tuesday night after playing at Chicago. “So now to say that you've just come up with the 25 mil? Nothing has changed. Media deal, CBA, nothing, you know what I mean where (you could say) that money has came in. So either you were just holding on to it for whatever. But honestly, I am happy. Very happy. But surprised because I thought it was going to be used a bargaining chip in CBA negotiations.” 

Even if it’s true that Clark wasn’t the final straw, or the individual who pushed the league to finally do the right thing, for the WNBA and Engelbert to not even acknowledge that the timing looks problematic once again minimizes the concerns of the Black players. 

“It’s a tough balance,” said sixth-year veteran Napheesa Collier of the Minnesota Lynx. “It is a little bit frustrating, but I feel like that’s how everything (changes); you put a spotlight on things and force their hand … I’m happy something catapulted this change, in that sense I’m happy we got to this point, but I am a little disappointed it took so long to get here.” 

On Tuesday, when USA TODAY Sports asked Las Vegas All-Stars Wilson and Chelsea Gray about the charter issue, Wilson said, “If we credit this to one person, that’s disrespectful to the (players) before us. They help us continue to push this league and push this game and grow it … I’m happy it’s finally here and it’s happening, because I know we were all tired of waiting for it.” 

I’m tired, too. Tired of the WNBA repeatedly dismissing concerns from its employees. Tired of the league acting like race doesn’t matter when its women of color have the bravery to speak out, even though they have the most the lose. Tired of reminding people that we must keep this conversation going, even if the charter issue itself is fixed. Tired of telling people it’s OK to demand more of a professional organization that’s been around 28 years. 

But mostly, I’m tired of the WNBA not meeting the moment. One day, maybe the league will get it right the first time.

When you begin planning a luxury yacht charter it is important to be aware of what is included in the cost of booking your dream charter yacht. although a yacht will have a base charter fee, this may or may not include additional expenses such as food and fuel and this is subject to the terms and conditions within the charter contract. there are various types of charter contracts and which one applies to you will depend on where you wish to cruise., high season.

High season refers to the most popular weeks of the year for yacht charter, whether it’s the winter period in the Caribbean or the height of summer in the Mediterranean , booking in high season requires early planning, determination and a big budget. In addition, planning a yacht charter to coincide with a major event will also be reflected in the price with marine spots for elite events often booking up early. Allow plenty of time when making enquiries to ensure a star studded, well prepared arrival.

Low season typically refers to any time outside of the high season periods. Groups of families and friends looking for a relaxing luxury vacation are advised to avoid high season weeks and opt for weeks outside of this time. The busiest periods are of course reflected in the charter costs and can be up to 15 to 30 percent more expensive than typical low season periods. Chartering a few weeks either side of these busy periods can be almost exactly the same, with the weather almost unchanged in some places, with far less crowds.

This article will go into detail of the costs to be expected when planning and booking a yacht charter. From the base charter fee of a yacht, what is covered within the fee and how it may vary in addition to details of contracts and how an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) can be used to manage any expenses.

Base Charter Fee

The base charter fee in essence refers to the hire cost of the yacht itself, with all equipment in working order in addition to the cost of food and wages for the crew during the entirety of the charter. This is essentially all the base charter fee covers with additional expenses often applicable on top. The base charter fee will vary from one yacht to another and this may be down to any number of reasons from size and on board amenities to the charter season. For instance, the base rate of a charter yacht may increase in "high season" and reduce during the "low season". "High season" and "low season" refers to the busiest and slowest periods for yacht charters though this may appear misleading, as these peak times refer to periods of weeks as opposed to full seasons. In addition, you may find that a yacht is also more expensive during special events such as the Monaco Grand Prix, Cannes Film Festival and America's Cup. Unless you are keen to charter a yacht for a particular "high season" event, choose your dates carefully as although a "high season" rate will be more expensive than the "low season" the two can sometimes share much of the same weather conditions.

Aside from seasons and events, yachts of the same size may also differ in price and this may be down to a vast difference in on board amenities. A yacht which boasts an on board cinema or lavish water toys may have a higher base rate compared with a yacht of minimal amenities of the same size. If it is unclear as to why two yachts of the same size are vastly different in price, ask your yacht broker to explain what the differences are. Once you are clear on what the base price is and why, it is important to discover what costs will be applicable on top and this is dependent on the type of charter contract used.

The type of charter contract applicable to your charter will depend on where in the world you are cruising, as there are various terms within the industry which dictate how the payment structure is determined. For instance, a MYBA (Worldwide Yachting Association, formerly known as Mediterranean Yacht Brokers Association) contract operates under Western Mediterranean Terms (WMT) and is arguably the most commonly used, particularly with large yachts embarking on a Mediterranean yacht charter. This contract is often referred to as a "plus all expenses" contract and requires that the charterer pay for fuel, food, beverages and dockage fees as an additional expense outside of the base charter fee. Typically, guests can accumulate an additional 25% to 50% of the base charter fee though this is dependent on what is consumed. These expenses can be tracked through the use of an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA) which we will cover in the next section.

Alternatively, smaller yachts on a Caribbean yacht charter can expect a "mostly all-inclusive" contract known as Caribbean Terms Inclusive (CTI) sometimes referred to as Standard Caribbean Terms (SCT). The Standard Caribbean Terms greatly differ from Western Mediterranean Terms, as the Caribbean terms include three meals a day in addition to four hours cruising per day which is included in the base charter fee.

In addition to the commonly used MYBA terms and Standard Caribbean Terms, there are also less frequently used terms such as Standard Eastern Mediterranean Terms (SEMT) and Greek Terms (GI). Read our guide on Understanding Charter Contracts for more information and if you are unsure as to what is included under the terms of your contract, be sure to ask your broker.

Advance Provisioning Allowance (commonly referred to as APA)

Irrespective of the charter contract it is important for guests to be aware of the Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA). The APA was designed to enable charterers to manage their expenses through a clear and trackable arrangement. An APA is a way to deposit the estimated expense amount of your charter to cover costs such as fuel, food and dockage fees. Typically, the APA accrues to approximately 25% to 30% of the base charter fee, though this does of course depend on the charter parties tastes and requirements and could be far less or far greater than this estimation. For instance, charter guests who intend to regularly dine on caviar and vintage wine can expect to pay more, whereas guests on board a sailing yacht charter can expect to save on fuel costs. Charterers can request an estimated APA amount from the yacht broker based on their on board expectations.

The APA is to be paid approximately one month prior to boarding the charter yacht and is paid directly to the Captain of the yacht. Once the APA has been paid to the captain it will then be retained as a bank account of sorts, from which the captain can make expenditures whilst keeping a record of what has been spent. At any point during the yacht charter guests can request a rundown of accounts from the captain as a way of keeping track of expenditures. The captain will request that any additional funds are paid during the charter should guests exceed the APA. It is therefore a good idea to keep an additional account with your yacht broker on shore, as should the APA become critically low at any time the yacht broker can release additional funds to the captain on the charterers command. Cash can be used if necessary though an on shore account may be deemed as hassle free to some.

It is important to remember that food and fuel for example, are charged at cost without mark up to the charterer and upon disembarking, transactions can be reviewed by the "head" charterer and Captain with any remaining funds to be paid back to the charterer.

Fuel and Dockage Fees

It is important to remember that whilst considering fuel costs, the fuel consumed when using jet-skis and tenders will also apply to the charterer. In addition, whilst docked at a marina the generators used in order to produce electricity will also use fuel. The distance travelled and speed of cruising also affects fuel costs and it is important to bear these factors in mind. Dockage fees may vary from very little to large sums and this is dependent again upon the location and whether you wish to dock during a special event such as the Monaco Grand Prix.

Although insurance costs are not directly connected to the charter costs as such, it is useful to bear in mind should you with to take out Charterers Liability Insurance or Cancellation and Curtailment cover. Value Added Tax (VAT)

European Union (EU) tax laws state VAT will apply should you disembark within their waters, for example Italian territorial waters. This may also apply to some Caribbean islands. Commercially registered vessels are usually VAT exempt though vessels which are not commercially registered will be liable for VAT for all charters within the EU.

No request is too large or detail too small on a yacht charter though it is wise to keep in mind the shipping costs should you request an expensive bottle of champagne to be transported to you whilst you are residing in a secluded bay of the Caribbean. It is important to understand the entire payment structure to ensure no unpleasant surprises arise and it is often prudent to keep an escrow account with your broker on shore in order to control charter costs without having to carry cash on board.

WNBA is entering a new era: Skyrocketing viewership, sold-out arenas, young stars

Sue Bird hopes that when she’s in her 50s and 60s, she can be like a former NBA player who currently throws out opinions on television. One model Bird sees for herself: Charles Barkley. She remembers multiple instances of hearing the Naismith Hall of Famer talk about his playing days on TNT’s “Inside the NBA.”

“He’s like, ‘Oh, I had to fly commercial. I didn’t have these charter flights.’ Or, ‘Oh, these guys are making $40 million. Like, my contract was only —I don’t know, $10 million.’ And he kind of sounds disgruntled,” Bird said on NPR’s Fresh Air last month.

She wants to one day be able to toss out back-in-my-day tales. “I’ve always joked, I hope I’m that disgruntled athlete because that means all the blood, sweat and tears was for something,” she said. “It means the game has grown.”

Bird retired after two decades in the WNBA following the 2022 season. She hasn’t been out of the league even two full years (Bird technically jumped back in this April when she joined the Storm ’s ownership group), but the league she’ll watch this summer is already in a better place than it was when she retired.

Changes — both momentous and minute — are already aplenty as the 28th regular season begins Tuesday. For years, as Bird and recently retired Candace Parker graced the hardwood, the WNBA chipped away at areas of growth. But now the pace of the adjustments is explosive.

“To be very honest, the impact of the wave right now is more profound than I thought it was going to be,” Storm co-owner Lisa Brummel said. “It got to be a bigger wave a lot faster than what I think we projected it to be. And wow, I’ll say it feels amazing.”

Television viewership numbers have skyrocketed across women’s basketball. April’s WNBA Draft averaged a record 2.47 million viewers , a 307 percent increase over last year, and it was the most-viewed WNBA telecast since 2000. The first preseason exhibition for Chicago Sky rookies Angel Reese and Kamilla Cardoso didn’t air on traditional television, but more than 500,000 viewers tuned in to a phone stream from a resourceful fan . It seems like a harbinger of what will come in the regular season, which tips off Tuesday.

“The growth is happening so fast,” said Cheryl Reeve, the Minnesota Lynx ’s coach and president of basketball operations. “It’s so accelerated. And I’ve been saying this in our own organization, that business as usual isn’t going to work anymore.”

The early viewership returns reflect the strengthened link between the college and professional games. Cardoso and the South Carolina Gamecocks’ win over Caitlin Clark and the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2024 national championship game averaged 18.9 million viewers, making it the most viewed women’s college basketball game ever and the most viewed basketball game (college or professional in men’s or women’s basketball) since 2019. The tournament was up 121 percent from 2023.

With a high-profile rookie class entering the league, WNBA attendance is swelling, too. No team had ever sold out its season ticket package in the offseason, but three teams (Las Vegas, Atlanta and Dallas ) did this year. Three games have also been moved to bigger venues to accommodate more fans who want to see Clark play.

How players arrive at those contests will be changing as well. WNBA commissioner Cathy Engelbert announced last week that the league plans to add charter flights on a full-time basis sometime this season. The news came as the league’s existing charter policy appeared increasingly untenable in the long term.

Clark and her Indiana Fever teammates traveled to Dallas for their first preseason game on a commercial airline and were greeted by a few fans and media members. They experienced no travel or security issues on their first road trip of the year, according to a team spokesperson. But one video clip showing Clark and center Aliyah Boston passing by a luggage carousel, with a member of the organization’s security team present, gained more than 2 million views. It served as a reminder of their current conditions.

Engelbert was uncommitted about when exactly a full-charter program would be implemented. She said the new travel program, which will cost about $25 million per year for the next two seasons, will launch “as soon as we can logistically get planes in places.” Still, the news of private travel was cause for celebration.

Lynx guard Kayla McBride called the change “a breath of fresh air.” Minnesota forward Napheesa Collier noted that with viewership increasing across women’s basketball, it was imperative to make the adjustment to protect player privacy.

“All these players in these spaces are becoming so popular that it really is about (safety) as much as it’s about recovery,” she said.

Even before Engelbert’s announcement, franchises around the league recognized the importance of increasing security. According to a person with knowledge of the Chicago Sky ’s plans, after not traveling with security last season, the franchise will travel with security this season. Every WNBA team will travel with security personnel on its commercial flights, for as long as they remain the standard.

There has also been additional security around the Sky at practices, which take place at a public facility in suburban Chicago. Sachs Recreation Center wrote in an email, obtained by The Athletic , to its community members that beginning April 29, two police officers would be onsite during all Sky practices for the remainder of the season. Their presence is new this year and the change appears likely to have been driven by the Sky’s desire to bolster its player safety.

Fever general manager Lin Dunn said Indiana was taking similar precautions to ensure every member of her franchise would be safe when flying commercial. In addition to having a full security team at home games, the Fever will be traveling with multiple full-time security members, employed by Pacers Sports and Entertainment, on all road trips, the team spokesperson added. Multiple members of their security team will also be present at ancillary team events, like they were at Indiana’s promotional photo shoot in downtown Indianapolis last week.

Those changes are reflective of a new era in the WNBA. Breanna Stewart , the No. 1 pick in 2016, recalled taking photos and signing autographs at airports without a security detail present during her rookie season.

The travel adjustments demonstrate a commitment to improving player experiences. New facilities provide another significant boost. By season’s end, the Storm and Mercury will have opened new spaces. The Storm debuted their 50,000-square foot performance center in April, equipped with state-of-the-art strength and conditioning equipment, a health and wellness suite, and an aquatics room — all of it designed and engineered by a group that was 85 percent women and people of color. The Mercury ’s will be part of one of the largest developments for a professional sports organization in the country, according to the franchise. It is expected to open by the time they host the mid-July All-Star Game.

It should come as no surprise, then, that both added stars: Seattle signed 2016 league MVP Nneka Ogwumike and four-time first-team All-WNBA guard Skylar Diggins-Smith , while Phoenix bolstered its roster with 2021 Finals MVP Kahleah Copper and All-WNBA defensive team guard Natasha Cloud .

Having already become the first franchise to win consecutive titles in 21 years, the Las Vegas Aces will look to win a third straight this summer. Expect a standout season from their star, A’ja Wilson , who Nike announced on Saturday would be getting her own signature sneaker and clothing collection in 2025. Wilson is one of just over a dozen WNBA players ever to have a signature shoe and the first Black WNBA player to get a signature shoe since 2010.

All told, as Engelbert prepares to give the Aces their rings Tuesday night, she is glowing when thinking about the state of the WNBA. With league revenue having reportedly doubled since 2019, she said they have “huge investment” coming in through corporate and media partnerships. (The league’s existing media rights deal with ESPN ends after the 2025 season, and a new CBA could come into effect in 2026.) At April’s Draft, which was held in front of fans for the first time in eight years, feeling the positive momentum Engelbert said the WNBA was “ready for what’s next.”

Expansion into new markets is part of what’s to come. A 13th franchise will begin play in the Bay Area in 2025, while a 14th team is reportedly set to launch in Toronto in 2026.

“We are witnessing a transformational moment in sports,” Engelbert said, “that we may not experience for generations.”

Bird, too, feels the added buzz. She said the sport has crossed a cultural cachet line. For that reason, it might not take Bird, 43, another seven years to become a semi-crotchety pundit. She might be able to tell stories about the old days before she even knows it.

Billionaires like Jeff Bezos and Mark Zuckerberg spend six figures a year maintaining their superyachts. Here's how.

Financial advisors are quick to warn prospective owners that a boat is nothing more than a hole in the water in which to throw money. When it comes to superyachts , you'd better have bags and bags of cash.

As one luxury agent told Business Insider at the Palm Beach International Boat Show: "Buying a boat, it's a huge purchase — and nobody needs a yacht."

A superyacht, generally over 30 meters long, is one of the most expensive assets money can buy, with the largest costing more than a lot of real estate or a private jet. Billionaires like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Steve Jobs each spent nine figures on their megayachts.

That doesn't include operating costs. Owners should expect to pay about 10% of a yacht's new-build price each year, experts told Business Insider. That's tens of millions of dollars annually for the most luxurious boats.

"It's a small-to-medium-sized business in its own right," said Jeffrey Beneville, a senior vice president at insurance company NFP, where he specializes in consulting clients about yachts.

Unlike many smaller boats, superyachts need staff, not just a captain. Some superyachts have space for dozens of crewmembers , including a chef, engineer, and masseuse for the guests onboard. Each gets an annual salary — the highest-ranking members earn six figures — and benefits. Eric Schmidt's yacht fits a crew of 28 for a ratio of about two crewmembers per guest.

Then there's fuel, dockage fees, routine maintenance, and insurance. The latter hinges on everything from the reputation of a yacht's shipyard to where an owner wants to take it (if a vessel is taking frequent trips to the South China Sea, for example, expect to pay a higher premium). If a superyacht has a support yacht — or a support superyacht, in Bezos ' case — expect to pay another 10% of that boat's price annually.

"The cost to maintain a yacht is so high that they just think that money's getting lit on fire," Matthew Fleissig, the CEO of wealth management firm Pathstone, told BI of his clients who choose to charter rather than own.

One of his firm's clients who does own has a 23-meter yacht valued at $5.2 million. The annual cost to staff, maintain, dock, and insure the boat is $346,297, according to documentation provided to BI. The lion's share is spent on marina fees ($95,970) and maintenance work ($88,408.) While not exactly a Sunfish, that boat is too small to count as a superyacht.

At 106 meters, the Amadea, owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch , definitely does. The $300 million yacht, which was seized in 2022 and is docked in San Diego, cost $922,000 a month to maintain, a court filing showed: $360,000 for crew salaries, $75,000 for fuel, $144,000 for insurance, $178,000 in dry-docking fees, and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food for the crew, and miscellaneous expenses.

"And that's an inactive yacht that's in the water," NFP's Beneville said.

If it were operational and carrying guests, the costs would be about twice that, or between $20 million and $30 million a year, he added.

Of course, it makes more financial sense for the non-obsessives to charter, and many of Fleissig's clients do. And some owners choose to offer their yachts for charter — the most luxurious cost as much as $1 million a week — to offset the costs.

"If you charter the boat for 50 days a year, it's going to help a lot," Anders Kurtén, the CEO of brokerage firm Fraser Yachts, told BI.

Then again, the running costs don't matter as much at a certain point. "If you're worth $30 billion, it's nothing. And if you're worth $117 billion — and these are the guys we're talking about — they're in it as long as it's still enjoyable for them," Beneville said. "It's not a money thing."
