Harmony 42 (2005-2009)

The Harmony 42 is a French production yacht that garnered attention for its innovative features and affordability. Designed by Olivier Poncin, the founder of Harmony Yachts , and built between 2005 and 2009, this sailing boat is a product of meticulous engineering and efficient production methods. The Harmony 42 is a versatile vessel, suitable for both cruising and racing, and offered a range of customisation options for potential buyers.

Performance and Handling:

When it comes to performance, the Harmony 42 doesn’t disappoint. The boat is equipped with a Volvo Penta engine, which can be upgraded from 40hp to 55hp as part of the optional Comfort Pack. This pack also includes a fully-battened mainsail, an extra battery, and a battery charger, among other features. The Harmony 42 is designed for easy and safe handling, with a well-geared and weighted steering system. It performs exceptionally well in varying wind conditions, making it a reliable choice for both novice and experienced sailors.

Interior and Amenities

The Harmony 42 offers a spacious and comfortable interior layout, featuring three cabins, a navigation area, and a large bathroom. The galley is designed for convenience, with a straight-line arrangement that makes meal preparation and serving a breeze. One of the standout features is the 200-litre fridge, which is both huge and cleverly designed for easy access to its contents. The Comfort Pack also added insect screens on the windows, enhancing the overall experience onboard.

Design & Build

Build structure, techniques & materials.

The Harmony 42 had a unique design theme that combines a straight-stemmed hull with medium displacement. This makes it heavier than some of its competitors, which is advantageous for a cruiser. The boat offered three types of keels: a fin/bulb in iron, the same in lead, or a shallow-draught tandem keel. The rigging is also noteworthy; it features long spreaders and good mast support, making it simple, strong, and efficient. The hull construction incorporates a foam-core and Kevlar reinforcement, adding to its durability.

Layup used vacuum infusion in closed moulds.

Resale Values

There is currently (Aug 2023) 1 used boat listing for a Harmony 42 on Yachtworld.com, Boats.com, BandofBoats.com and BoatTrader.com with a price ranging from €59,500

Those boats with heavy charter use are at the lower end of the scale; those with very little use and a high specification are able to achieve higher prices due to their better condition and history.

Depreciation Curve

A 2008 model would have cost around €299,000 with all factory fitted options.  This sum, allowing for inflation would now be worth €430,857 or USD $460,847.

BUC Value gives an average valuation for a 2008 model in fair condition for its age as USD $87,600.

A 2008 model on the market today is listed at €59,500.

Depending on the specification of the vessel (the number of factory fitted options and any subsequent upgrades) these figures would suggest the depreciation on a 2008 model of approximately 81% over the last 15 years (Spend adjusted for inflation cf. BUC Value).

Poetry in motion

This French production yacht offers groundbreaking innovations at an affordable price.

Europe is the epicentre of production yacht building. This is where all the trends, all the innovations are introduced and tested. And the epicentre of the epicentre is France.

When I do my PhD it will be on the history of the French production yacht because the industry has never ceased to break new ground in the affordable yacht market. The French set the tempo that everyone else plays to.

One of the big-name players is Olivier Poncin. Olivier is credited with revamping the Dufour line towards the end of the 20th Century; then, early in the 21st he set up Harmony Yachts. In the process, he built a new factory that uses closed moulds, which are efficient and control emissions. And robots do a lot of the work. The result is tightly-controlled moulding, efficient production and cost savings, the latter reflected in the price of the Harmony 42. It is good value.

Design theme The design theme of the 42 is an interesting combination of features. The hull is straight-stemmed with medium displacement, heavier than some of the competition, which for a cruiser is a good thing. You have a choice of three keels, a fin/bulb in iron, the same thing in lead, or a shallow-draught tandem keel two vertical blades supporting a bulb.

The rig is interesting. The chainplates, which attach the rigging to the hull, are on the hull sides instead of inboard, so the rig gets nice long spreaders and hence good mast support. Because the shrouds run out to the hull sides the headsails cannot extend aft of the mast so they must be short-footed. This limits area and makes them easy to winch.

The diagonal shrouds "the angled ones between the spreaders" are led down to the deck for easy adjustment. So this rig reflects the best of current racing practice and is simple, strong and efficient.

Hull construction is special. The skin has a foam-core and Kevlar reinforcement in the bow and around the keel. The shell is strengthened by a moulded internal structure, which presents a Gelcoat finish to the bilge, attractive and easy to clean.

The options list includes a gennaker or, as on this boat, an asymmetric spinnaker with a sock. When the sail is hoisted it is shrouded in a long sock. To free the sail the mouth of the sock is pulled up. To douse it, the sock is pulled down, snuffing it like flame deprived of oxygen. Then you lower the head of the sail to the deck and put it away.

This is a sensible option, even for cruising because the sail's area offsets the small jib, especially when deep-reaching in light airs. And it can be handled by a small crew.

The boat shown here was fitted with the optional Comfort Pack, which costs $18,461, great value because you get a bigger Volvo Penta (55hp instead of 40hp), fully-battened mainsail with batten cars (the sail slides up and down easily), an extra battery, battery charger, insect screens on the windows and lots more. Cheap for the price.

Below deck The accommodation layout shows three cabins (two aft, the owner's cab forward) with a navigation area and a large bathroom next to the companionway. The only option is for a second, smaller bathroom (the alternative is a desk) in the main cabin forward.

The galley is a straight-line arrangement on the portside, opposite the dinette, good for serving meals but holding on in a seaway could be a problem.

The fridge is huge, 200lt, and clever, a top-loading device that carries its contents in trays so they are easy to recover. Harmony importer Kevin Brandt reckons if you crank up the thermostat the lower contents freeze.

Part of the Comfort pack option is a strong dinette table mounted on two pedestals so that when it is lowered for sleeping it is rigid. The tabletop's central stowage box touches the floor when the table is lowered, adding rigidity. There is full headroom everywhere, and opening ports for ventilation.

On deck The cockpit is arranged with the mainsail traveller on the coachroof and the primary (headsail) winches Lewmar 48s on the coachroof. With these you raise the mainsail halyard, roll out the jib then cam off the lines to free the winches so they can handle the jib sheets.

This set-up keeps the winching activity forward so guests aren't disturbed. The secondary winches, for the spinnaker, are near the helmsman.

Vertical bows are vulnerable to anchor damage, a problem which builders tackle in different ways. Harmony have a nice solution, a metal bowsprit (with two rollers), which should hold the Delta plough clear of the Gelcoat. There is a huge anchor locker and a Lewmar electric windlass.

Sailing In light, shifty air I found it easier to steer from the leeward side, where the headsail tufts are easier to see. The steering is well geared and weighted. We took no performance figures, but it doesn't matter if you have a polar diagram to refer to.

This shows the 42 will give you 6 knots hard on the breeze in 15 knots, and above that wind speed the performance builds quickly, reflecting her modest sail area.

The numbers show a sensible approach for a boat intended mainly for cruising not too much working sail, which makes her easy and safe to handle, but performance boosts from the spinnaker (downwind) and, on this boat, the 55hp diesel for when there's not enough wind.

But Kevin will race a 42, fitted with the optional racing sails (tri-radial Mylar main and jib) and presumably the optional lead keel.

The Harmony 42 is biased towards cruising but, as with almost all the mainstream builders these days, the hull is of sophisticated design and should not be slow. The rig is terrific.

This is a well-priced boat. The standard craft basic but, to my mind, not too basic is $299,000, which is great value. Most people will want more but I like the idea of a low base price and comprehensive options list from which I can make careful choices. I, for one, would not want sophisticated entertainment systems.

Malcolm, one of the owners of this boat, reckons his kids won't come sailing if there's no TV and sound system. Leave the kids behind, I say.

As well as the Comfort Pack mentioned above, you can order more electronics, TV and sound system, a PC system, and much more. On top of the Pack options there is a long list of general options, which includes the spinnaker, teak side decks, bow thruster, folding prop, heaps of stuff. Everything is fitted at the factory.

The boat as we sailed in cost $359,000.

The Harmony 42 is pitched at the charter/cruising end of the market, but Olivier Poncin has made sure the buyer can dial up a specification as sophisticated as he or she wants.

The French invented the modern production yacht 40 years ago and they continue to occupy the high ground.

You wonder where the builders and designers can go in the future as they continue to develop the product. Maybe I should write about it one day ?

The new-to-Australia French-built range of Harmony yachts are fast, strong, ideally suited to charter and make ideal private boats, notes John Ford who put the Harmony 42 under the spotlight

Good vibrations

Most of us have never heard of Oliver Poncin or Harmony Yachts. But Oliver's company has been in boat building for 20 years and has been manufacturing his latest brand in a purpose built 10,000m² facility in La Rochelle, France, for three years and now have an annual production of some 300 boats ranging from 31 to 52 feet. The Group Poncin also manufactures boats under the White Shark, Catana, Locwind and Sea Hawk brands. Oliver seems to know a bit about boats.

The introduction of the boats into Australia came about when the owners of Yachtshare International were seeking a new model for their timeshare fleet. Company director, Kevin Brandt, described how they came to import the Harmony brand.

"We were keen to expand our fleet of six boats and when we were given the opportunity to import these boats, we visited the factory in France and came away very impressed," said Brandt.

"The yachts are fast and strong, and ideally suited to charter but at the same time, they make ideal private boats," he said.

Harmony has developed its own Resin Transfer Moulding method of construction. It uses a system of vacuum injection, where the female mould is first sprayed with gelcoat then the fibres and 20mm PVC closed cell foam are laid onto the cured gel. A second male mould then closes onto the hull and resin is injected under pressure into the fibres. Floor plates are pre-positioned when the resin is vacuum injected in the sealed moulds. Kevlar is used to reinforce the stem and heavily loaded areas. The result is a very strong construction, and a smooth finish inside and out. As some testament to the strength of the hull, they are rated to EC cat A offshore for storm force 10 and seven-metre seas. The 42 has a claimed stability rating of 1.27.

First impressions of the boat as it sits dockside are of simple elegance and fine finish. This carries through to the cabin which, while having an air of quality, is certainly dominated by white glass surfaces. It is practical without the homely feeling of traditional timber. It is bright and airy with a feeling of space.

Easy access to the cabin is by a raised step from the cockpit down four wide steps.  Headroom is a generous 190cm and with a maximum beam of nearly four metres. To starboard is a well sized wet locker which doubles as the boat's only real size hanging locker. Forward of this is a comfortable navigation station with a moulded timber seat and raised floor. There is ample room for charts and books. Standard is a VHF radio, Furuno GPS and repeaters for the cockpit instruments.   To port is the main head with handheld shower, a seat for changing or showering, manual flush toilet and 80lt holding tank. Shower waste gravity feeds overboard.

The dining area has seating for eight around a cherry blonde table with cream imitation suede seat covering. The table itself has a storage bin in the centre with a lid that reverses for placing hot serving pots.

Under the seats are storage and a 500lt moulded watertank. The upgrade package allows the dining table to convert to a double bed. The galley features a 200lt fridge, generous Corian preparation areas with fiddles, a double sink/drainer, a bin and a two-burner gas stove. Overhead cupboards give storage which might be only just adequate for extended cruising.

Extras fitted include a 66cm LCD television and Bose sound system.   The bow cabin has its own head, again with hand pump and 80lt holding tank.

Standard layout is a desk/vanity in place of the head. There's a smallish cupboard but large storage areas under the bed and a safe fitted discretely into the portside bed table.

Aft of the companionway are two double cabins with lockers and under-bunk storage. The starboard cabin houses the batteries.

The motor is a 55hp Volvo D255D spinning an optional three-blade folding prop. Sound insulation is good, there is easy access to the oil dipstick, and fuel and water filter service points from the lift–up engine cover and rear cabins.

It is easy to see why the boat is popular for charter as it gives the impression of being durable and easy to keep clean. It is practical without looking cheap. It is not the sort of boat you would be fretting about having young children running wild or fishermen in from an afternoon on the mudflats. It is a boat you can live with.

However, as some concession that the simple presentation isn't for everyone, Harmony is about to release their Vintage range with a mahogany, brass and stainless steel finish throughout the cabin.

Adding to its appeal as a charter boat, there is plenty of room below to entertain when the weather is poor. It is a great place to take advantage of the good size television and quality sound system.

Above deck is equally tidy and practical. Everything is neatly laid out and allows easy access around the boat. The cockpit has room for eight to 10 on wide teak covered seats. A fibreglass binnacle houses Furuno log, speed, depth and wind instruments as standard. Engine is keyless start. The wheel is folding Lewmar stainless steel. The cockpit floor has a removable central toerail stored in the ample lockers under the seats. A fibreglass cockpit table extends to be large enough for lunch but folds neatly out of the way for sailing.

Transom includes a vented gas locker with room for two bottles.

The central helm seat folds out for access off the stern and a stainless steel swim ladder folds down into the water.

A cockpit shower is fitted to a recess in the transom giving pressurised hot water, and there is a Plexiglass sliding hatch with split lockable washboards.

Wide, non-slip decks allow easy access forward with neatly designed aluminium toerails, well engineered stainless steel stanchions and twin wires. The bow has a huge anchor locker with a 1000W foot operated Lewmar winch. A stainless steel dolphin has anchor rollers and spinnaker block.

An 8/10 rig has a Soromap aluminium boom and mast with double sweptback  spreaders angled at 20 degrees. The options pack gives you an Elvstrom Sobstad fully battened main with lazy jacks and bag. Two reefing points are fitted with leads back to the cockpit. An Elvstrom furling headsail is standard.   Standard cabintop winches are two-speed Lewmar self tailing 48s with two 46s fitted as options. Six-a-side Spinlock clutches take care of the lines which can be led to a locker under the companionway step to tidy things up. The fitout is neat and easily handled with minimum crew. Below the water the boat is fitted with a 1.93m, 3000kg cast iron keel but you can have a two metre deep draft or a cast iron 1.55m tandem keel if water depth might be a problem for you.

Rudder is a foam cored glass reinforced design with a carbon fibre spindle.

Our day on Pittwater gave us a good gauge of how the Harmony 42 sails. It was a true four seasons in one day, starting out sunny, warm and calm then blowing to more than 30 knots before finally settling down to fine conditions again for lunch.

Heading down the channel, the boat motors easily at around eight knots. The keyless ignition was a bit of a talking point. No key seems strange but the security aspect seems to be covered by locking the cabin and disabling the batteries. The general consensus seems to be that if someone is going to steal your yacht, they will do it key or not.

Setting the main is easily handled with the large self tailing winches and a quick tug on the self furling headsail. In gentle breeze the yacht has plenty of power, accelerates well and steers predictably. It is more the cruiser than racer but has enough of a pedigree to be competitive on a twilight course.

The boat sails well off the breeze and as wind conditions increased, it remained predictable and felt safe. To windward we achieved around 8.5 knots and pointing well - as high as 27 degrees - perhaps due to the inboard mounting of the jib sheets.

With some fairly strong gusts we saw more than 12kts with the kite up on the rare occasion someone had time to look. At all points of sail the boat is comfortable and easy to get around in a seaway.

With the breeze picking up again as we headed to the crowded dock, it became obvious that a bowthruster could be a wise entry on the options list. With a starting price of $299,000, this boat will attract some attention. But with an option list as long as your arm, the sky is the limit. By the time you option it up to as tested you are looking at $60,000. This includes a substantial investment in an auto pilot.

Of course, you could always go down the Yachtshare path and end up with a 28-day a year part ownership from around $30,000.

  • Sails well off the breeze, and remains predictable and safe
  • Outboard chain plates look dodgy

The 1985-built Harmony V cruise ship is a futuristic-looking superyacht owned by Variety Cruises ( fleet ). This luxury yacht is Ideally sized for the coastline and coves of the Greek Isles and cruises from either Piraeus-Athens or Crete. The season is from April to October, with itineraries that visit Santorini , Delos , Heraklion and Mykonos , even though the ship is also able to get into ports as diverse as Kea (Tzia) island and Spetses . Winter finds Harmony V cruising along the rivers of Western Africa and Cape Verde Islands .

The vessel (IMO number 8620583) is currently Greece- flagged (MMSI 237243500) and registered in Piraeus/Athens .

Harmony V yacht cruise ship

The ship Harmony V was delivered to Variety Cruises in October 2008. The vessel was completely rebuilt in 2009 in order to accommodate upscale cruise passengers the line is attracting via its unique itineraries and services. The luxury yacht can travel at the leisurely 11 knots. She has dual stabilizers and 3 passenger decks with capacity for 49 guests.

Decks and Cabins

The yacht has 3 decks and total 25 staterooms - all outside and with either portholes or picture windows. Cabins are priced in 4 categories: A (on the upper deck), B and C (on the main deck) determined by location. The only two P cabins (on the upper deck) are junior suites with seating areas featuring convertible sofa beds for triple occupancy. Standard cabins are sized 12,5 m2 (135 ft2), which seems kinda "cosy", but is actually spacious for yacht cabins. All accommodations are decorated in soft colors and provide individual climate controls, LCDTVs, safes, hairdryers, minifridges, en-suite bathrooms with showers, sea views from either portholes or large windows. Beds can be double, queens or twins.

Shipboard facilities

The sunny weather of the standard itineraries of my Harmony V means a lot of time spent outside, whether at the outdoor bar, on a sun deck lounger, or utilizing a Marina Platform used for watersports activities (kayaks and snorkeling equipment are provided).

Indoors passengers will find a mini-spa, comfortable lounge with an adjacent bar and dining room which offers all meals in a single seating. Menu items reflect the region's cuisine. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style affairs, while 3-course dinners boast table service. Cocktails and wine are available at additional cost.

Onboard entertainment is limited to the TV in the lounge and in staterooms (local channels only). The yacht offers Wi-Fi for an additional fee. A cruise coordinator provides shore excursion information and destination briefings. On the Western Africa itineraries, a naturalist gives lectures onboard.

  • BOAT REVIEW: SAILING YACHT ‘HARMONY’, HANSE 505
  • Boat Reviews

harmony yachts review

A while back, Nick published a   video review of the Hanse 505 called ‘Harmony’  that we have often chartered with Croatia Yachting since February this year. We were really impressed with not only the layout and design, but also how she handled in wind, heeling over and helming smoothly through swell. Her rudder is almost as deep as the keel (which is marked as 2.7m on the helm stations, despite actually being more like 2.38m as a deterrent for anyone chartering her to take her into shallow water!) which gives a lot of power to the helm. We took a day sail out in March and were rapt to get an average of 22 knots wind on our way from Kaštela to Šolta. Sailing her on a broadreach, she managed to get up to 9.5-10 knots under full sail, even with our guests at the wheel, all of whom were helming for the first time. She felt quick and solid, and our guests were all really impressed with how responsive she was. It was a really great day and we loved demonstrating to our guests one of our favourite parts of sailing, namely balancing the boat out, heeling her over and letting her fly! See one of our guests review the day  here.

Nick goes into much more detail than I ever will about the functions, lockers and workings of Harmony’s cockpit and helm stations. He is the one who is either helming himself or overseeing someone else helming and either way, he always makes sure that he is very familiar with all of the features, functions and practicalities of the navigation gear, bow thrusters, and those sorts of things. If you are interested in these kinds of details, click  here   to watch his in-depth review on our YouTube channel.

Hanse boats are quite different from other yachts that we have sailed in a couple of ways. First of all, the running lines come all the way back almost to the helm stations on either side of the cock pit. All running lines. That means halyards, sheets, reefs, boom-vang, and all the rest. We are more used to the running lines coming back to keys at the companion way. On a boat like Harmony, which is essentially a cruising boat, the lines, helm stations and general set-up are designed to make her easy to sail by just one or two persons. And although it took a bit of getting used to, we can definitely see the merits of this kind of layout, especially when we have guests on board. It leaves plenty of room for them to relax and spread out while we are able to helm and operate the sails easily as a two-person team. Speaking of sails, the other aspect that Hanse boats have that we are not used to is a self-tacking jib! As racers, this was a feature that we were NOT keen on to begin with. And again, after sailing a few different kinds of Hanse boats, we understand the merits of a self-tacking jib… But we will never be fully converted!

harmony yachts review

Down below, Harmony’s layout is also a wee bit different to what we usually charter. She has four cabins accessible from the saloon, laid out as you can see in the image below: One very large master cabin in the bow with its’ very own separate shower and toilet, two double cabins aft, one shared head on starboard and one bunk cabin on port. Normally, we wouldn’t charter a boat with this layout, as it means that three cabins are sharing a head and one cabin gets to live in luxury! And for a family with a baby, Harmony’s master cabin provides them with heaps of room, even if they want to put down a port-a-cot. While the private and separate shower and toilet makes giving the little one a shower each night much easier to manage!

harmony yachts review

This means that the remaining three cabins all share the remaining head, which is a wet room with combined toilet, basin and shower facilities. Showering in a wet room like this on board a boat takes a little getting used to. The shared head on Harmony is not spacious and roomy, and yet definitely not the smallest we’ve seen! In our experience, it’s a good manageable size, and that’s high praise given that neither Nick or I are small people! It has a couple of lockers to store your towel safe and dry while you are showering, plus room to store small toiletries or cleaning products.

harmony yachts review

The two aft double cabins are a great size. The thing we love about these cabins is the head room and the storage, because there is plenty of both! Plus bedroom lamps that can be either white light or red light, which is much easier on your eyes if you need to turn on a light in the middle of the night. The fourth cabin is located just forward of the aft port cabin and is a bunk bed cabin. We don’t normally recommend these cabins for adults. As Nick shows in the video, an adult can in fact fit in the bunk beds. Although it’s not really a roomy fit. We think the bunkbed cabin is better suited to children, and bunk cabins are always a huge hit with all the family trips we have run. The kids especially seem to love the novelty factor of the bunks.

WHAT I PARTICULARLY LIKE ABOUT HARMONY

harmony yachts review

One of the features that really stood out for me was the transom platform which lifts and lowers with a hydraulic assist mechanism. These platforms can be heavy and sometimes quite dangerous to operate if you are not familiar with them, but this gas assist makes it much easier to operate. I also love how, when closed, it sits about 0.6m above the deck, providing safety if you have children or animals on board. As we have a families booking with us, this year with children as young as one year old, this feature was really important to me, and just one of the reasons that I booked this particular boat for that particular family.

Of course, I cannot review a boat without telling you ALL about the galley. Whenever we are out on a boat, the galley is my kingdom, no matter how big or small. And on Harmony, the galley is BIG. She has plenty of large drawers for cutlery, cooking utensils and ALL of my provisioning. Canned food, dried food, oils, sauces, spices… My immense load of provisions disappears into Harmony’s ample galley storage. And the wine storage… Oh the wine storage! Two specially dedicated storage lockers designed and cut to fit wine and other similarly sized bottles.  Plus two massive drawer fridges. I am used to the top access (and sometimes additional lower access) fridges in boat galleys. And for open ocean passages, live aboards and for the purposes of energy efficient cooling, those top access fridges are certainly far more practical than the drawers. Thing is, our sailing holidays are a different type of sailing all together. We sail in the beautiful Dalmatian islands where the   summer weather is characterised by blue skies and winds rarely reaching beyond 20 odd knots , not to mention that we dock and access shore power each night. In these mild conditions, the drawer fridges are brilliant to pack in all sorts of locally grown produce, handmade products and even the odd cold brew from our friends at   D16 ! The amount of bench space in the long galley is generous too, with a fold up cover to sit over the gimble stove and removable covers to sit over the double sinks. Cooking in this galley is more of a pleasure than a chore and the food that comes out certainly reflects how much I enjoy the added space!

Another bonus of Harmony is her recently installed air-conditioning. We don’t usually charter boats with air-conditioning. And yet when a family with a one year old approached us about booking a trip with us, one of their main concerns was their little girl being able to sleep comfortably at night in the summer heat. The air-conditioning made this possible. It pays to note that at the moment, the air-conditioning in Harmony is only setup in the main saloon area. It is not piped into the cabins at this stage. This meant that the cabins don’t get much of the cool air. However, as someone who normally cannot sleep in the cabins in this Croatian summer heat, the air-con did make the cabins cool enough for both Nick and I to sleep in all week, provided that the air-con was on all night and our cabin door remained open.

The flip side to this is that the air conditioning also provides heating in the cooler months. I know it is not usual for sailing yachts to be chartered during the colder winter months here in Croatia, and yet because we chartered Harmony in February, we can attest to her comfort when it’s freezing out, as well as when the summer heat is melting!

Harmony was chartered through our friends at Croatia Yachting. Charters can be arranged bareboat (where you skipper the boat yourself!), Croatia Yachting can organise a skipper for you (and a hostess too if you’d like) OR you can contact us directly to book with us, so that we can take care of all the itinerary, provisioning, cooking and marina fees for you! Because, you’re on holiday. You deserve the break!

DJ Sets and a Nightclub Screening Can’t Hide How Boring Harmony Korine’s Aggro Dr1ft  Is

By Harrison Jacobs

The screening of "Aggro Dr1ft" at Elsewhere in Brooklyn, New York.

Harmony korine's infrared experiment brings the potential future of cinema to a strip club near you, harmony korine finds new forms for his twisted visions.

Like everything with this “enfant terrible,” it’s never clear how much, if any, of this is ironic or a troll. The overwhelming feeling I was left with upon leaving Elsewhere last month, however, was boredom.

When I read last September that there was a wave of walkouts from the film’s premiere at the Venice International Film Festival, I had assumed it was because the material was objectionable. After all, Korine has delighted in shocking and disturbing audiences since his earliest films, regularly offering graphic—and in some cases unsimulated—sex, typically with a side of distasteful violence. Now, having seen Aggro Dr1ft, which tomorrow finishes out a theatrical run, I can assure you that isn’t the case. There is nothing that might inspire that reaction, or frankly any reaction at all, besides irritation.

The film follows the story of Bo (Jordi Mollà), the self-described “world’s greatest assassin” as he takes on a job to kill a demon-horned crime lord in Miami. Bo is also a family man, balancing his violent work with time with his kids and wife (Chanya Middleton), who goes unnamed. Most of the time, Bo’s spouse is depicted either writhing on their bed or twerking for the camera.

To the extent there is a plot, that is it, aside from a meeting with the man who hires (and pays him) for the job and a short interlude on a boat with his protégé Zion (Travis Scott). The film is filled with underwritten monologue by Bo, who speaks endlessly about being the world’s greatest assassin, and repetitive dialogue from each character, as if they each contained just one trait.

There is possibly a kernel of a good idea here. If one were to read the filmmaker’s intentions generously, I might say that Korine, known for exploring America’s id, has made a power fantasy staged using the language of video games. His film contains the same stilted dialogue, the same emphasis on sex and violence, and the same flat female characters as, say, the Grand Theft Auto series. Plus, Aggro Dr1ft has its own stylized aesthetic, with everything shot using thermal imaging.

A less generous reading (and one that, in my opinion, would be more accurate) would suggest that Korine hasn’t even thought through his intentions. That much is made clear by the fact that the same half-formed ideas repeat over and over, making the film’s 80-minute runtime feel like three hours. The film consists primarily of loops of swinging machetes, a Ferrari driving down highways, and close-ups of the characters’ faces. Bo, and the other characters repeat their underwritten dialogue over and over in a robotic monotone. The repetition might be the point, but it’s also pretty dull.

Women, when they do appear in this film, are often shown supine or twerking. Bo’s wife repeats how lonely she is; in the climax, as the demon crime lord prepares to fight Bo and humps the air, a woman cries while tied to a bed in what appears to be rope bondage. It’s all so tedious.

One might say that Korine reduces filmmaking in Aggro Dr1ft to its violent core: we watch Scarface because, on some level, we want to be Al Pacino, if only for a moment. But, even in that generous reading, who in the American filmgoing public doesn’t know that? It’s an idea that’s been explored so much that, to do so in 2024, is just a roundabout way of letting your audience have their cake and eat it too. Ironic misogyny, like ironic racism, is still misogyny, as if that hadn’t been made clear over the last decade of the internet.

The thermal imaging filter, which has been colored over with animation and digital paint, can at times create striking visuals. There are rare moments of beauty, as when Bo looks out over a sunset from his balcony and the colors briefly flip to reveal a towering demon. At times, an overlay of wires or tattoos seem to crawl up characters’ skin as they move. But more often, the hues muddy and stick together, and the neons quickly lose their shine. One is left with the unmistakable impression that, were Korine to remove the gimmicky filter, we’d be left with some of the ugliest, most try-hard footage ever put to film.

Aggro Dr1ft ’s long and much-hyped tour feels like pageantry built up to disguise this film’s vacuousness. And that pageantry continued on well after the Elsewhere screening ended, too. Rows of chairs were cleared from the dancefloor, and AraabMuzik began his set, surrounded by his entourage and several bikini-clad women pole-dancing. In the back, EDGLRD employees sold merchandise for the collective—skateboard decks, T-shirts, hoodies, wearable masks, and so on. The audience swayed laconically, barely dancing, or ignored the set entirely to talk with friends.

I can’t speak for the Los Angeles screening, or the EDGLRD Boiler Room set during Art Basel Miami Beach in December, which seemed to have a who’s who of attendees. But the crowd at Elsewhere was almost comically dead for the tenor and volume of dance music being played.  This did not seem like some new form of entertainment, bringing the Miamified aesthetic of Korine’s more recent feature films into the real world. Or if it was, the new world of entertainment is decidedly manufactured and safe in addition to being incredibly lame.

The entire night felt simultaneously like a 50-year-old and a 12-year-old’s idea of cool, which makes sense given that the 51-year-old told Art in America last year that his sensibility is that of “12-year-old moron.” Korine said at the time,  “I’m just like a child. It’s arrested development.” I guessed as much.

Sustainability at sea: Sunreef is integrating recycled plastic bottles into solar electric yachts

Avatar for Scooter Doll

Sunreef Yachts is already a solar electric boatbuilder recognized for its sustainability efforts in the maritime industry but is now taking things a step greener. The company is now integrating recycled PET bottles into its solar electric yacht production process.

Sunreef Yachts  has been operating out of Gdansk, Poland, for over 20 years alongside a newer footprint established in the United Arab Emirates. From day one in 2002, Sunreef has been pushing the boundaries of sustainable marine travel, launching the world’s first 74-foot luxury oceangoing catamaran with a flybridge.

Sunreef Yachts currently has hundreds of its boats sailing waters across the globe, showcasing the company’s lineup of sustainable, all-electric propulsion and advanced solar panels. Its current portfolio consists of eco-friendly sailboats and  massive solar electric catamarans  ranging from 60 to 100 meters in length.

In April 2024, Sunreef introduced a new 40m electric yacht called the Eco Explorer . One month later, Sunreef shared a new sustainability strategy that will integrate hundreds of thousands of recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles into the superstructures of its electric yachts.

Sunreef’s electric yacht reuses 600k recycled PET bottles

As part of a new initiative to maximize energy efficiency and, above all else, sustainability, Sunreef Yachts Eco’s R&D team will integrate a structural foam composed of up to 100% recycled PET materials into the production of its solar electric yachts and sailing catamarans.

By integrating this recycled material, Sunreef can achieve even more eco-conscious electric yacht construction practices while furthering sustainability in a maritime segment that quickly embraces electrification .

In addition to being 100% recyclable, Sunreef shared that the recycled thermoplastic core offers additional benefits in electric yachts and catamarans, such as high resistance to process temperatures, exceptional chemical resistance, strong adhesion, and other mechanical properties.

For added perspective on the impact the recycled material can have on the industry, Sunreef said one of its 80-foot sailing catamaran requires about 2.4 tons of the structural foam, equating to approximately 600,000 recycled PET bottles finding a second life at sea within the superstructure rather than floating around as pollution.

This is the kind of news we love sharing with you readers and provides further evidence that large boats can not only be 100% electric but may soon be 100% recyclable.

Adam Montgomery sentenced to up to life in prison for murder of daughter, Harmony

A New Hampshire man has been sentenced to up to life in prison for murdering his 5-year-old daughter in 2019.

Adam Montgomery, 34, was sentenced to 45 years to life in prison Thursday for murdering Harmony Montgomery. Judge Amy Messer said the sentence, as well as other sentences handed down Thursday, would be served consecutively to the decades-long sentences he's already serving for other weapons charges.

Prosecutor offers to request reduced sentence for Montgomery if he reveals where Harmony's body is

"The court has the responsibility to impose a sentence that not only punishes you harshly for the crimes that you have committed, but considers deterrence, that is, how to keep you from hurting others," Judge Amy Messer said. "In light of the egregious nature of the crimes of which you have been convicted in this case, and taking into consideration your extremely violent criminal history, the court finds the only way to do this is to keep you off the streets."

The sentences all but guarantee that Adam Montgomery will spend the rest of his life in prison. He is serving two consecutive prison sentences of 15 to 30 years in prison on unrelated weapons charges, and the new sentences will be served consecutive to those.

In February, Adam Montgomery was found guilty of second-degree murder, second-degree assault, falsifying physical evidence, abuse of a corpse and tampering with a witness and informants in the death of his daughter Harmony.

Messer sentenced Adam Montgomery to three-and-a-half to seven years in prison on the falsifying evidence and tampering with a witness charges and four to eight years in prison on the assault charge, all of which will be served consecutively to the other charges. A sentence of 12 months in jail on the abuse of a corpse charge was suspended, though it also includes an order that he not contact the families of Harmony's mother, her foster parents and the adoptive family of her brother.

View live, time-stamped updates about Thursday's sentencing hearing below:

New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella has released a statement about the sentencing:

"Justice has been served and Harmony Montgomery’s memory and legacy remain our focus. Today’s sentence demonstrates that our legal system takes heinous crimes seriously and holds perpetrators accountable for their actions. The murder of an innocent child leaves a lasting scar on New Hampshire and our hearts go out to Harmony’s family and all those who knew and loved her. I want to thank our dedicated trial team and all of our law enforcement partners for their work on this case, especially the dedicated law enforcement professionals with the Manchester Police Department. Their tireless efforts led to the justice Harmony received in the sentence handed down today. While no sentence can bring back the life that was taken, we will honor Harmony’s memory by working to ensure that we are doing all we can to protect New Hampshire’s children and bring any person that would harm a child to justice."

Judge Amy Messer has sentenced Adam Montgomery to a sentence of 45 years to life in prison for the murder of Harmony Montgomery.

More from Caroline Smith:

" Adam Montgomery did not kill his daughter, but when he discovered his daughter's death, he broke, and he did inexplicable things. Even he can't explain his actions. But eventually he puled it together, and he was able to say goodbye to his daughter, and that's what he did."

Defense attorney Caroline Smith says Adam Montgomery maintains his innocence.

Defense is now addressing the court. Adam Montgomery’s attorney, Caroline Smith, has accused the state of pulling a stunt when offering to reduce Adam Montgomery’s sentence if he said where Harmony’s remains are. She says the state was trying to get a reaction out of him.

Defense attorney Caroline Smith: "The state was doing a stunt. They were seeking a reaction today from Adam Montgomery in the courtroom by their stunt."

"Mr. Montgomery does not have to express remorse here for something for which he maintains his innocence."

Throughout these victim impact statements, Adam Montgomery has been looking forward or looking down.

Harmony Montgomery’s foster mother is now giving a victim impact statement. She says Harmony was a friend to everyone. She loved going to church and school. She especially loved Minnie Mouse and playing outside. They’ve asked the judge to impose the fullest sentence.

From Ross Ketschke:

We just spoke with Crystal Sorey, Harmony’s birth mother, after she gave her victim impact statement to the judge. She called Adam Montgomery “the monster who killed my baby”

Describing what Jameson said, father Johnathon Bobbitt-Miller said: "I'm really sad she's an angel. I miss her. She was my best friend."

"I hope she's eating M&Ms in heaven. I hope her glasses are safe and not broken. I miss her."

From Tim Callery:

We’re now hearing from the parents who adopted Harmony Montgomery’s brother, Jamison. They say their son is a victim of Adam’s actions. They add Jamison has had a difficult time dealing with his sister’s death.

Blair Miller, one of Harmony's half-brother Jameson's dads: Just a few weeks ago, his teacher asked him to draw a picture of his family. He drew his two dogs, his two brothers, his two dads and he drew a heart above all of us. In that heart, he wrote the letter H. He said that was Harmony, looking down on us.

The state’s victim advocate is now reading a statement written by Adam Montgomery’s estranged wife, Kayla. Kayla writes that this is a goodbye letter to Adam Montgomery.

In her statement, Kayla Montgomery details alleged abuse she suffered at the hands of Adam. She says he’s not the man she married.

Crystal and Brittany Sorey leave the room as the victim advocate begins reading Kayla Montgomery's statement.

Brittany Sorey, the aunt of Harmony Montgomery, is delivering her victim-impact statement.

"You are a selfish, evil, conniving, poor excuse for a human being."

"If you're any type of man at all Adam or you loved her for just a second, you would tell us where she is."

Crystal Sorey is delivering a victim-impact statement.

"She wasn't a coward like you, and I'll be forever grateful for that. You're a coward that has to be in control of everything and everyone around you."

"She had a life worth living, unlike your own. And it bothered you to your core that she was nothing like you and everything like me."

Prosecutors are asking for 56 years to life. Senior Assistant AG Ben Agati just told the judge the state would request to reduce that sentence to 35-to-life if Adam Montgomery says where he put Harmony Montgomery’s remains. State awaited a response from Adam Montgomery, but he did not respond.

In a dramatic moment, Senior Assistant Attorney General Ben Agati says that if Adam Montgomery were to say right now in court where he disposed of Harmony's remains such that police could find her within seven days, the state would recommend a lower sentence of 35 years to life, with the sentences on the other charges being served concurrently, rather than consecutively.

There was a long silent pause when Adam Montgomery said nothing.

"Since that offer has been rejected, your honor, that is yet another reason why the minimum should not apply," Agati said.

Adam Montgomery has walked into the courtroom.

Attorneys are walking in now.

The public is seated. Crystal Sorey and other family members are in the gallery as well. At the moment, there is no judge, attorneys or Adam Montgomery in the courtroom.

Manchester Police Chief Allen Aldenberg shares a hug with Crystal Sorey, Harmony’s birth mother, outside the courthouse.

Legal analyst Patricia LaFrance says victim-impact statements will be an important part of the sentencing , and she noted that since Harmony can't speak for herself, others will have to.

LaFrance also said there may be opportunities for Adam Montgomery to reach a plea deal if he offers information on where he disposed of Harmony's remains. Adam Montgomery is facing two additional trials, so a deal could be worked out related to those.

News 9 Investigates has learned that Adam Montgomery has arrived at the courthouse ahead of the sentencing hearing scheduled for 1 p.m. Until now, it was unclear whether he would show up for the hearing after he declined to appear for most of his murder trial. A judge later ordered him to appear for the sentencing hearing.

Adam Montgomery has already been sentenced to decades in prison in a separate case involving stolen weapons and being an armed career criminal.

Now, state prosecutors are requesting that Adam Montgomery be sentenced to 56 years to life for murdering his daughter.

Montgomery's attorneys, meanwhile, have yet to file their sentencing recommendations.

Investigators say Harmony was killed late in 2019, but her remains have never been found.

Harmony's mother, Crystal Sorey, told WMUR she would be OK if Adam Montgomery receives a reduced sentence so long as he provides information about what he did with Harmony's body, but she's not confident he would agree to that.

"I know how sick he is. I know he'll never give up her location, but I know I'll never give up. So I'll find her," Sorey said.

Adam Montgomery was not in the courtroom for his trial, but a judge has ordered him to appear for sentencing. At this point, it's unclear if he will comply with that order.

Before the sentence is handed down, the judge will hear victim-impact statements from Harmony's loved ones, including a statement from her half-brother, who is now 7 years old.

Harmony Korine’s Unforgettable ‘Aggro Dr1ft’ Is ‘Grand Theft Auto’ on Acid

DIALED TO 11

Both brilliant and tacky, with its infrared visuals, skull-faced assassin, and women shooting fireworks out of crotches, Harmony Kornie’s latest is like nothing you’ve ever seen.

Like nothing you’ve ever seen, Aggro Dr1ft strives to create not simply something new, but The New, delivering a barrage of sound and image that amalgamates the old and familiar into a fresh, hallucinatory cinematic vision. It’s brilliant. It’s tacky. It’s exhilarating. It’s wearisome. There’s no middle ground with this boundary-pushing whatsit, which will earn reactions as diverse and heated as the various elements that comprise its wholly unique 80 minutes. Destined to be passionately adored and despised, it’s a provocation, a stunt, a dare, and an experiment—as well as a bold one-of-a-kind experience that, following its polarizing debut at numerous 2023 festivals , shouldn’t be missed when it arrives in domestic theaters beginning May 10.

Aggro Dr1ft is the beastly offspring of many mothers and fathers, playing like the bastard progeny of Grand Theft Auto , Scarface , Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and kindred action and crime sagas, all of it fashioned with terrifying and trashy gangland and strip-club aesthetics. Korine shoots his film in eye-searing infrared (via thermal NASA cameras) that makes everything pulsate in blazing reds, yellows, purples, pinks, and blacks, such that it approximates what it might be like to see the world after staring for too long at a solar eclipse.

Gliding along and rotating about as if in a dream, the director’s cinematography is at once entrancing and off-putting, and that conflict is further exacerbated by visuals that throb with unholy X-ray malevolence. Faces and bodies flash bio-mechanical veins and tendrils that resemble modernized versions of H.R. Giger’s iconic designs, suggesting a marriage of man and machine, not to mention the mortal and the holy—all of which is embodied by the story’s protagonist.

Bo (Jordi Mollà) is “the world’s greatest assassin,” and as he dispatches a target in a pool at film’s outset, an enormous demon—its skull face adorned with colossal horns—materializes behind him, at once fueling his ferocity and mimicking his physical movements. Wearing a mask that often exhibits a skeletal visage, Bo is a death dealer who ruminates in melancholic voiceover about his place in this fundamentally chaotic and debased reality.

Travis Scott holds a gun in a still from ‘Aggro Dr1ft’

Travis Scott

“The old world is no more,” he muses after completing his mission. Upon visiting his wife and children, whom he loves with a passion that matches his fondness for ending lives, he announces, “The next generation will reign supreme.” Such comments speak to Korine’s belief in Aggro Dr1ft ’s claim to cinema’s future, and there’s something thrilling about the lengths to which the director pushes things into extremity. An abstract venture that’s nihilistic to its core, it feels at once groundbreaking and reductive, mature and childish, and those contradictions are the fuel that propel it into ever bleaker and more bonkers territory.

There’s a story lurking inside Aggro Dr1ft , but it matters less than the poses struck, the vibe conjured, and the attitude expressed. Bo works for a rich man who lives in one of the countless mansions spied in this Floridian hellscape of scorching colors and screeching bird noises, the latter punctuating an AraabMuzik score that’s as avant-garde as Korine’s imagery. Scuzzy, pounding, and dialed to 11 so that half the dialogue (much of it narrated) is difficult to discern, the film’s soundscape is part and parcel of this proto-kitschy marvel. So too is the barely existent narrative, which concerns Bo being hired to take out a growling overlord named Toto (Joshua Tilley) who walks around in shorts and boots, boasts a featureless face and giant wings, carries an enormous sword, and is surrounded by scantily clad women whom he habitually refers to as “bitches,” including when he locks them in hanging cages.

A demon with a skull mask floats in a still from ‘Aggro Dr1ft’

A demon in a skull mask

“Dropping souls, dropping bodies, dropping souls,” intones Bo, who believes that “there is a magic in the brutality” and declares that “I am a hero. I am a solitary hero.” What’s said is spacy and hackneyed, and articulated with a wooden sincerity that seems modeled after the way characters talk in video game cutscenes. Korine distills everything to a self-conscious cliché, be it Bo’s contemplations, his adversaries’ threats, or the many sights of dangling crucifixes, bouncing female behinds, and guns that create lens flares when aimed at the screen.

A Corvette drives down a South Beach boulevard, one tire so yellow it appears to be on fire. A cadre of blade-wielding hooded minions surround Toto (“We are the children with devil faces”), and it’s not clear—nor does it really matter—if they’re dwarves or children. Two strippers perform on stage, their crotches emitting sparks like it was the Fourth of July. On and on the nuttiness comes, and as with repeated lines of dialogue, the monotony turns the proceedings into a nightmare acid trip of murder, longing, and badass affectation.

Aggro Dr1ft resembles the sort of hypnotic movie that would play at a house party thrown by James Franco ’s Alien from Spring Breakers , and its demented dynamism mesmerizes far more than it grates. Eschewing convention with every crashing, clashing note, it’s a work which demands that viewers succumb to its wild instincts and attune themselves to its phantasmagoric wavelength.

The film’s pointlessness is its point, as Korine dives headfirst off the deep end into a stew of agony and ecstasy. On a luxury yacht filled with armed henchmen and hot tub-crowding strippers, Bo tells a beloved comrade named Zion (Travis Scott) that he should read Julius Caesar , after which he asks Zion to look after his son and daughter should he perish on one of his assignments. Greed, power, tragedy, and damnation are omnipresent. So too is bracing madness, which crescendos once Bo finishes what he’s set out to do, and leaves his gruesome handiwork for the robed devils and S&M-outfitted women who populate this unreal land.

“An assassin’s work is never finished… until the world is clean. And then we sleep the eternal sleep,” says Bo at the end of Aggro Dr1ft . Yet such pessimism is offset by his hopeful belief that “God is love. Forever.” Make of it what you will, but the light and the dark of Korine’s latest burn equally, unforgettably bright.

The city made him hide his boat — so he had it painted on his fence

“I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

harmony yachts review

When the city of Seaside, Calif., ordered resident Etienne Constable to build a fence to cover the boat parked in his driveway, he complied. But the puckish way he did it — hiring his artist neighbor to paint a realistic mural of the same exact boat on his fence — has brought him viral attention.

“We kind of hit the sweet spot between following the rules and making an elegant statement to the contrary,” says Constable.

Constable, who works in business development, has lived in the same house in Seaside for 29 years. For most of that time, his boat trailer — often with a boat attached — has sat in his driveway without issue. But in July 2023, he received a letter from the city, asserting that the municipal code requires that boats and trailers be “screened on the side and front by a six-foot-high fence,” and threatening him with a citation and a $100 fine if he failed to comply. (The Washington Post has reviewed the letter.)

To Constable, the letter came out of nowhere. The ordinance itself is not new. He hadn’t heard any complaints from neighbors, and he’s kept the boat, which he named Might as Well and uses to fish “as often as I can,” for four years in his driveway.

“I thought, ‘This is ridiculous,’ and my first reaction was to leave a nasty, nasty message at the city hall,” he says. “And then I thought, well, I might as well build a screen … I’ll do what they want, but I’m not going to do it their way.”

So he started brainstorming. That’s when he had a chat with his neighbor, Hanif Panni, a muralist and graphic artist, about potentially painting the fence to look exactly like the space it was built to cover up. The two batted ideas back and forth over the fence that separated their yards. “We wanted to make an illusion,” says Panni.

Panni, whose artist name is Hanif Wondir , was in. He had other projects on his docket, and wasn’t able to start painting the boat on the fence until early May. It took four days to complete. As he worked, people driving or walking by would stop to comment on the optical illusion, and a few neighbors told him that they, too, had received letters about the ordinance, says Panni.

The actual fence cost a few hundred bucks, per Constable, who did the labor himself. He paid Panni for painting the mural, too.

With Constable’s permission, Panni shared the finished work on social media. It quickly went viral.

“The more people see something, the more opinions there are about it … and it’s just so fun to see those branches stemming off of something that I created,” says Panni. “ … One of the reasons why I do public art, and art in general, is to inspire those conversations.”

The mural ultimately led to an approving phone call to Constable from Nick Borges, Seaside’s acting city manager, on Friday evening. Borges first saw the images of the painted fence when a friend sent them to him — neither of them knew the photos were taken in Seaside. “I thought, ‘wow, that’s pretty creative.’ I laughed at it, and then I started getting calls from local media,” says Borges.

After years of complaints that the city was too lax about code enforcement, Borges says Seaside hired someone to enforce its codes, hence the letters sent to residents. Constable’s case was closed out in November, when the fence (at that point, without the mural) was spotted, says Borges.

“We’re not taking any action,” he says. “The only action I’m going to take is a high five, and that’s it.”

This story has been updated with comment from Seaside’s acting city manager Nick Borges.

I take pride in my ability to give a good gift.

I listen for hints from family members throughout the year to ensure Christmas morning is filled with “Oh, wow, how’d you know?” reactions to presents.

When a friend tells me they’re expecting a second baby, I dart to my local bookseller to pick up a copy of You Were the First , which has never not resulted in immense gratitude (and tears).

I’m the friend people turn to when they’re stumped on what gift to give someone else—which is probably a large part of why I work at Wirecutter. I started in product recommendations at an early age.

Over the years I’ve focused my energy on gift- giving , but when it comes to gift- receiving , there’s one present that will always bring me gratitude (and tears). I opened it when my first child turned 1.

L.L.Bean Boat and Tote

Great in the sand.

This bag, with its simple and durable design, will last a lifetime. And its lack of smaller pockets means you can easily shake out sand.

Three L.L.Bean Boat and Totes with names embroidered on them.

My mother-in-law’s best friend, who was adorably nicknamed “Marma” by my oldest, gave us an L.L.Bean Boat and Tote on his first birthday. I remember seeing S-U-L-L-I-V-A-N spelled out in a classic blue font, fitting both for him (his first name) and for me (my last name). And I instantly recognized it as everything a gift should be: practical and meaningful.

This tote, a top pick in our guide to the best tote bags , will also last a lifetime, says Kit Dillon, one of Wirecutter’s travel-gear experts. Its simplicity—no frilly pockets or zippers—adds to its effectiveness, Kit notes.

I think it adds to its enduring charm, too. For a plain-looking canvas bag, the Boat and Tote manages to elicit a sentimentality that’s surprising—and not just for the Gen Zers contemporizing monograms .

Marma spent her summers on a lake in Maine, and my husband and I would visit over the years: while dating, mid-engagement, and eventually with our son in tow.

As cool mornings transitioned into scorcher afternoons, Marma would guide us down a hill to the waterfront with her own “Beans bag” in hand, filled with sandwiches, water bottles, a book, sunscreen, and Boggle.

We’d spend hours on the dock living out of her bag, reading, noshing, hydrating, and breaking to “compete” in rousing games of Boggle. As I struggled to come up with even a handful of words, Marma would scribble more than 20, immune to the hourglass or, really, any sense of time.

So when Marma gave us our own bag for my son’s first birthday, what she had given us was not just a bag but a nostalgia-infused keepsake I’d take for years to come to parks, splash pads, lakes, and beaches—a container for our own Boggle-esque memories.

When our second was born, this time a girl, a second tote arrived from Marma. The pink letters were everything my attempts at gender neutrality were not. But the tradition continued, and Marma’s laidback Maine influence seeped back into our hectic Brooklyn apartment, along with a smidgen of sand and sunscreen coating the bottom.

An L.L.Bean Boat and Tote filled with beach supplies.

In a moment that walloped our family, Marma died soon after our daughter was born. My mother-in-law lost her best friend, I lost a confidant, and my then-4-year-old learned far too early that even those we love most will one day leave us.

Years passed before we had our third child, Ivy. Her arrival brought joy, but it also reminded me that Marma, who’d claimed our kids as her own squad of grandkids, would never meet her.

When my mother-in-law stepped in to give us an I-V-Y Beans tote, I cried again. She continued Marma’s legacy with a simple canvas sack. With it came the possibility of Boggle, “apps on the dock,” pit stops at the L.L.Bean store in Freeport on the way to the lake, strawberry picking in June, and blueberry picking in August—and all of the other traditions Marma imparted on our little family.

Whenever I unbox our family’s warm-weather clothes as spring begins to turn to summer, I come upon our totes. And, of course, I’ll pack them to mark the start of the season—filled with essentials and games, and on standby for whenever the mood strikes for a trip to the beach. Or a round of Boggle.
